The staff started to clean up. Those who had finished eating and had been in the room started to disperse. George stayed. Richard stood up. He looked down at Millicent, his hands shaking slightly.

“Her mother, she was very young. So she grew up in a home,” Richard said, his voice cracked. “She didn’t have anyone.” He turned and started to walk out of the room, but he lost his balance and only caught himself by sitting back down in the chair he had just vacated.

George stood up and went to Richard’s side. “Are you alright?”

“That mark on her chin is why she hasn’t played in a while. She’s got a violin hickey. Her body is rejecting it. She’s been playing since she could walk, and her body decided it was time for her to be allergic to it. She literally can’t play anymore.” Jeanne’s voice was flat, hard to read. She shifted as Sam talked about the ghost hunting. Her shoulders went back slightly, even as she leaned forward toward him.

“The stairs are a good place to start. There are a couple of places in the basement that’d be good to look at, too. I know a path to the old church, too. That place is super creepy. Lena is the only one who really watches the cameras. It isn’t like we actually have security. Just Faustus and Armel. But Armel isn’t even on the island right now.”

“It wasn’t stored anywhere to my knowledge. She handwrote it.” Felix and the others were cleaning up. She glanced over but Felix waved her off.

Ralph frowned, uncertain of what to ask next. They were sort of in the way now. He glanced over and saw George and Richard. It looked like George was comforting Richard. Ralph tilted his head. He hadn’t caught what had caused that.

“Did you have other questions? I don’t know how much more I can help,” Juliane admitted.

“Do you have any idea why someone would switch people’s seats? It had to have happened before we all got downstairs right? We were let in as a group. So it had to be one of the staff or family.”

“I do not know. I am sorry. I am new here. I don’t know the family’s secrets like some of the older employees might. But I can tell you my thoughts on some of them. Lawrence, the one who was switched with Renee, is Richard and Elenore’s son. He is... rude. I think you already knew that, though. But he...” She trailed off and twisted her hands into the hem of her apron. “The agency I work through, he has hired from there before. He recognized us.”

“Agency?” Ralph looked at her, confused. Her lips went thin.

“You are American, you have uhhh... escorts? Yes?”

Ralph blinked.

Ben stared at Chase as he blatantly lied to Andy and the other girl. There was no way that wouldn’t backfire. Andy looked confused, before Ben could explain that Chase was yanking their chains, he had shadow stepped them from the hot chocolate stand back into Chase’s room. He had expected to go to his room, but Chase had a point. The teapot and the new tea cup were in this room.

Ben flopped back onto Chase’s unmade bed. He rubbed his hands over his face, taking a moment to compose himself. He had gotten another text, he assumed from Danni, but he didn’t look right away.

“That was insane. Is it always going to be like this? What sort of school is this? Absolutely unhinged behavior. I thought my friends back in London were crazy. Though they didn’t have superpowers, so I suppose there is only so much insanity they could get into. Even though we all knew someday we’d get powers. I suppose. That’s just not the same as actively having powers and using them like that. Who just punches people like that? Unprovoked? Then, when the person they are attacking is already on the ground, just kicking him? What the hell?” Ben stood up and hugged Chase.

“Are you really okay? I was really worried you were going to have a broken rib or something. Also, why did you tell them I was King Arthur? I’m pretty certain they believed you.” He looked over Chase to see if he saw any bruises forming on his face. He didn’t want to start poking Chase to check for broken ribs, mostly because he had zero clue how to look for those.

Ben sighed and got up to start the kettle. He absolutely needed a cup of tea. He had put it off so they could meet with Danni. Right, Danni, he glanced at his phone to read the text. Oh no. He turned on Danni’s livestream to watch whatever insane nonsense he was up to.

Andy had zero clue what the hell Chase was talking about. Somehow, she had missed anything her entire life to do with Arthurian legends, and so she did not catch that he was lying. Was Ben really royalty? If so, where was he actually from? He wasn’t Danish. He sounded British. She supposed she’d have to call him Arthur. She was not calling him prince or whatever that full title was. She was American. She did not have any sort of worship for royalty. It was honestly kind of weird.

They were gone, though. Shadows rippled around them, and poof. Gone. Her attention went back to Gideon. Sisters. Not my sisters, just sisters. That sounded religious. She wanted to pick at it. Wanted to learn more. But let it go. She had done that enough already today.

“Come on, let's go to the room and get your backup sword and then go ice skating.” She headed to the room. “Your eyes okay? I was worried when he knocked off your glasses.”

Finley ignored the conversation about the head. They did not care about it. They focused on Dysphoria. A smile played on their lips and they said, “I’ll take a sip in a moment, but first, you have a little something here.” They pointed at their teeth, leaned in, pulling Dysphoria’s face closer to make out with them, licking the marshmallow off of Dysphoria’s tooth.

“There I got it.” They sipped at the hot chocolate. “Ah, that is good. Very rich. The marshmallows are melting into it perfectly.” They sighed contentedly.

Then Finley turned their attention to their plate. They took a bite of the pastry that Dysphoria had dissected from the meat. Everyone else seemed weirded out by the meat, and Finley did not know why. Dysphoria did not recognize the meat. That was not an impossibility. Dysphoria had not been around very long. The types of meat the pair of them had eaten were limited.

Finley cut off a piece of the meat, examining it visually and smelling it before taking the bite. It was gamey and lean. Odd indeed. The rich flavors that usually accompany fattier meat were missing. The gamey flavor was not despised. It was like eating something from the wild. Finley chewed on the bite of meat and the thought.

“Do the staff hunt for the meat that is provided? If so, would they accept help? Hunting could be a nice diversion sometimes.”

Connie frowned. She did not pick up on Serena’s blush or its implications. She did sigh a little at Cal’s admonishment. It wasn’t her fault that Serena had been talking loudly about the head. Besides, Cal had asked about it, too. Why would she have to be subtle when the conversation had already begun? She had a missing roommate.

“My roommate and covenmate Pancho is missing. So if there is a random head showing up somewhere in the dungeons, I would like to take a moment to see if it belongs to him.”

She turned her attention back to Serena, looking her up and down. It wasn’t a proper medical exam. She needed equipment for that. But Serena seemed physically fine. “Placement exams, I take it.” Connie tsked. “If it is Croan, just tell him he’s got a stick up his ass. Ravoux’s aren’t too bad, though you’ll be fine,” she tried to reassure Serena.

“If you do remember any details of where or who found the head, would you let me know? I do want to find my lost roommate. He is new to the school, and if he got lost, I will feel responsible.”

Connie took a bite of her food, avoiding the ‘beef’. If the others were saying something was off about it, she was certainly not eating it. She didn’t particularly have the stomach for mystery meat, especially today after cleaning rabbits. Connie poked the meat, wondering if maybe it was rabbit meat. Deciding not to risk it, she turned her attention to the asparagus.

The smell of food that Marco was making made Em’s stomach rumble. “Marco, that smells divine!” She grabbed one of the paper plates and a cup of water.

“Aster, how has cleaning going? Can we move our stuff into the cabin yet?” Other than Em’s face and hands, which she had washed while getting water from the hose, she was filthy from working outside. She also had gotten a little pink from sun exposure, but didn’t seem bothered by it.

“We don’t know who did any of the nominations; we only know who we voted for. Only Elenore knows who voted for everyone. She holds this whole thing in her fist,” Elizabeth said, exasperated. She stood up and looked at Beatrice. “I will see you later. I’m tired of these people. I can certainly say that any additional input from me on the situation regarding these nominees will only be of the negative sort.”

Beatrice, who had been halfway through a bite, slowly chewed on the food, covering her mouth, trying not to be noticed. Elizabeth left the room, her plate of half-eaten food left behind, her glass of wine taken with her.

George met eyes with Tony and mouthed, “Talk later.” There was concern etched into his face.

Whatever Richard was feeling, he had clamped down enough on his emotions that he was hard to read. His shoulders were stiff, and he ate his food slowly. He was looking at Millicent. If his expression was one of concern or sadness, it was impossible for her to discern which. He swallowed his bite of food and said, “From her information packet, this is not the first tragedy in her life.”

Jeanne made a slightly disgusted face when Sam mentioned that he might be playing a duet with someone on the violin. “If that is Gabrielle you plan on playing with, you’ll want to reconsider. She hadn’t touched her violin in months.” She huffed, seemingly irritated at the very mention of her cousin.

“I would love to meet up with you later. I don’t care if it is boring. There are a few spots. There is the basement, attic, and some old wine storage that might be interesting. The stairs might be a hot spot. My great-grandfather died there, too. Kind of eerie, actually. He fell down the stairs just like Renee. That was years ago.”

“I’m sorry. I didn’t notice anyone else. I was very busy.” She shifted, looking a little uncomfortable.

“It is alright, we know this is not the job you thought you were being hired for. We will keep your secret,” Felix said, patting her shoulder lightly. “You have borne up well under the pressure.”

“Do you have the original sitting chart?” Ralph asked. If they could figure out what all changes were made, maybe that’d give them an idea of who might have done the changing.

“Ah, I do still have that.” Juliane smiled and reached into her pocket, from within she pulled out a small folder. On one side was a notepad with writing, in what Ralph assumed was Juliane’s hand, in French. The other side was a pocket with a few folded documents. He recognized one as Juliane flipped through them as the itinerary, and there was also a map. She removed a document in a slightly fancier hand that might be Elenore’s. This paper had a diagram of the table. She handed it over to Rhi and Ralph.

Ben was genuinely confused by the buff girl. He had no clue what The Princess Diaries were, or who Mia was. The name Chris Pine at least made some sense. He was an actor, so she must be talking about a movie. But what the hell did the Danes have to do with anything? He wasn’t Danish. What did Willy Wonka have to do with anything that was going on? He didn’t even know where to start with any of that.

Ben’s phone buzzed, a text from Danni. Had he not seen his previous text? At least it was telling him where Danni was going. He sighed. He did not feel up to going tubing. He really just wanted to go to his room, rest, drink some tea, and get his emotions in order.

“Danni and Rillie are going to the tubing area,” he told Chase. It was unnecessary since Chase was in the same group chat, but it might be a good enough excuse to just leave this conversation.

“Mount Wundagore,” Andy said, correcting both Chase and Gideon. As she said it, she realized it did not sound like a delightful place to go. She’d much rather deal with Willy Wonka and his factory of nightmares.

“You’ve seen The Princess Diaries?” She asked Gideon. That was an older movie. It had come out before she was born, and most of the people who attended this school were born after she time-traveled. Gideon was not among that number, but she had been a toddler, and that was still almost twenty years after the movie had come out. Andy didn’t care to do the math or try to remember the exact year The Princess Diaries came out; she knew it was from the early 2000’s.

The rest of what Gideon said was nonsense. Ben was definitely not Danish. He sounded British, but considering she had tried to explain Paris, France, to Gideon previously and had had little headway with that, she decided to let that one go unless Ben thought he needed to address it.

Finley was in a very good mood. Their alone time with Dysphoria left them in a warm haze. They did not even necessarily want to leave the room; instead, they delayed going to dinner by curling up with Dysphoria as long as possible. They had bread and chocolate; they did not need to go to dinner. They could stay in the room in the wonderful afterglow. They should clean the room and move the wardrobe away from the door.

Finley stretched languidly. They figured out one thing they did not have but wanted. Hot chocolate. Very well. They picked up their leaves and spider webs, changing them back into an outfit.

They moved the wardrobe from in front of the door, returning it to its proper place. “I believe the others will be gathering for dinner. I was thinking that a hot chocolate with extra marshmallows sounded divine,” they told Dysphoria. Their fingers intertwined with a tendril.

Upon arriving in the Feasting Hall, they joined Nicholas. “Good eve.” They placed their order, meat on the rare side, the salad, and of course, a hot chocolate with extra marshmallows to drink. Marshmallows were probably one of the greatest inventions, other than bread.

They heard the conversation about a head without a body, and dismissed it. If it were a body without a head, they would be concerned someone would think them guilty of breaking a Rule. There was still a likelihood that Snikt! of Finley eating the cop’s head floating around, though no one had brought it up recently, maybe it was drifting into obscurity as the twins said it would. Since it was a head without a body, and probably not a fresh head, they had no interest in it.

Connie had enjoyed her reprieve with Rohan. Between her conversations with her advisor and her friend, she felt more centered and ready to deal with the Mystery. She had some ideas that she wanted to go over with Barty and Jake. Her missing roommate and covenmate was still absent. Strange and frustrating. Where was he?

Connie spent the rest of her free time writing down her clean notes. When that was finished, she went to the Feasting Hall. Connie stood there torn between sitting with Rohan or Jake. She overheard Serena talking about a head being found. Connie frowned. Was this Pancho? Had someone found Pancho’s head? If they found a head, where was the body? This at least made her decision easier. She sat as close to Serena and Betty while still sitting with the coven group. She placed her order of roasted asparagus and water.

“Do you have a description of the head?” She had a missing person; maybe this was the solution. Well, if it was the head of her missing fourth coven member, it was a bigger mystery. What happened to him? “Who has the head? Is it available for viewing and potential identification?”

Noon came without much fanfare. The sun reached toward the zenith of its path. Bugs zipped about. The creatures of the forest followed their instincts.

The lake reflected the sunlight, but stayed cool despite the summer heat. It was tempting. It was not yet the hottest part of the day. That was still a couple of hours away, but it didn’t make it more bearable to know that.

Emily worked hard. She was good with her hands and had long cared for nature. She knew what could be touched without gloves, and what she needed to use tools to deal with. She carefully worked on making the first trail. It wasn’t until her thirst and some hunger started to pick at the edges of her awareness that she even bothered to pay much heed to anything but the work she was doing.

She gathered up the tools she had been using. A lot of debris had been put into the wheelbarrow. It was almost overflowing, so she used the rake and other things to keep it all inside the wheelbarrow as she went back toward the shed. Em noticed the others heading toward the lake. She smiled. A bit of time in the water would be really nice right about now.

Em wondered if maybe whatever Marco had cooked up for lunch could be used for a picnic. There was a set of tables half hidden in shade near the lake that would be perfect, provided they weren’t falling apart just like everything else at this damn camp.

When Wanda left, Andy relaxed. She let out a small sigh. This was going to be a rough semester. Though she hoped today would be the worst day of it. She had fully messed up and knew it. If it had just been the single punch, this might be easier to deal with. So while she appreciated Gideon backing her up so easily, Andy wished she hadn't kicked Chase while he was down. That wasn't a great look. Andy didn't care that it wasn't 'honorable' because in a real fight, being honorable didn't really matter. You did what you had to do to survive.

Andy nodded at Gideon’s question. “Yeah, we can do that.” After that, she figured they could just go skate. There shouldn’t be any drama there. She needed to know if Ben was going to forgive her. It was a little weird that Chase called Ben his liege. She could tell Ben was reluctant.

“You don’t have to say anything right now. We can talk tomorrow, during detention.” She figured giving Ben some time to think about it might help. It would give them all the time to cool down.

Ben relaxed, leaning into Chase. He held Chase’s hand, and it felt like everything would be okay. His head still hurt from all the crying. He closed his eyes. The apology sucked. He didn’t want to accept it. He wanted a cup of tea. He also knew that Andy and Danni were friends. If he didn’t accept the apology, it might strain friendships. He hated that he had to consider that. If he weren't friends with Danni, he probably would snap right off that he didn't want her apology, but he knew that Danni would want them to be friends.

“I’m fine. I didn’t get hurt,” he told Chase. He was still trying to decide if he was willing to accept the apology. Andy gave him a bit of an out. He gave a slight nod.

“Chase, can we go to my room too? I need a cup of tea.” He really couldn’t deal with anything else at this point. He’d text Danni and let him know what happened. He would also find out if Chase had been hurt, because if he had, Ben was not as willing to accept the apology.

Jeanne seemed sad about something. Sam couldn’t be sure if it was that she still didn’t know where Miguel was, that Sam and Miguel didn’t know each other, or that the pair of them had never gotten around to collabing.

“Well, just let me know when and where to meet you for the ghost hunt, though. It’ll probably have to be after the dance tonight. Or during it if you’re willing to annoy my grandmother. She’d be so pissed if someone wasn’t where they were supposed to be.” She sighed and went back to eating her food.

The room seemed to get quieter at Millicent’s comment. A few people shifted to look at the pair of them. Elenore wasn’t in the room, but the tension did seem to ramp up. Elizabeth made a strange noise.

“Well, if you don’t like it, you could just leave. Forfeit your chance to win the money and get out of here. Most of us don’t care about this song and dance. We have lives to get back to. This weekend is not the most important thing in the world.”

Millicent, as she is looking around the room, would catch that Richard, for a moment, looks devastated, but he quickly covers it up with a bite of food. Does he know who Renee is to him?

At the same time this conversation was going on, George looked at Tony. He looked nervous, almost upset about something. Was he worried about his wife’s health? Or something else?

“I’ll tell you later,” Ralph said as they closed the distance to Felix.

Felix smiled at the pair of them as they approached. “Would you like seconds?”

“Oh, no. We just had a question about the sitting arrangement last night.”

“Yes?”

“Who decided on it?”

“Elenore, of course.”

“Of course.” Ralph sighed. He was about to say something else when Juliane leaned over.

“Sorry, but I was the one who did the setting last night. But the names were moved around later.”

Ralph looked at Juliane in surprise. Someone had come by after the official setting had been placed and moved people around. That seemed strange. Who could have or would have done that?
