“As for the others,” Connie addressed Jake. “I will speak with Willow. We are roommates. She wanted an update about this anyway. So when I go back to my room, I will inform her of everything we learn.” At least it seemed that Barty was taking this seriously now. That was nice.

Connie reached over and patted Cassie’s shoulder, just once, and very softly, quickly drawing her hand back. It was clear she had only done it in an attempt to comfort Cassie; she didn’t seem to think it was a good way to comfort someone. “We will figure this out,” she said, trying to reassure her.
What Rohan had said about her magic had finally caught up to her. She stared at him for a moment.

“What do you mean, what is off?” She knew that her powers were a divine gift to her bloodline, which is why Finley had told her she smelled like a church when they first met. Connie didn’t particularly believe the story, but her magic worked, and people who could sense particulars like that claimed her magic was of divine origin, so she had no reason not to believe that. But what Rohan had specifically said was that there was something else coming off of her like her magic.

Finley kept an eye out as the group made their way back. They did not engage in the conversations. Uninterested in the chatter of whether they should inform the others or not. They led the way back to the stairs and out of the school's dungeons. Finley was literally skipping once they had exited the dungeon.

Finley was both excited and nervous about what would soon happen. Riding the blood. Their fingers caressed a tendril from Dysphoria, bringing it to their lips for a soft kiss. They wondered if the usual potential for riding too far and too deep was still possible for them. They had not ridden the blood of a death since before... Well, before Dysphoria had joined them.

“It is a lake, Aster. Oh, you city boy.” Em sighed exasperated. Marco hit the nail on the head there. She leaned into his embrace.

“Well if we aren’t needed to fight Bigfoot or whatever, I’m going to go get out of wet clothing.” Em started to leave, pausing to wait long enough for Marco.

“Come on Aster.” She gestured, beckoning Aster to join them. She followed after the others slowly trying to keep space between the two groups, sighing when they stopped and veered so they could go around them.

Elenore smiled as Millicent and Brendan rejoined her in the ballroom. “Ah, good, you’re back. I am almost finished with everything in here. The last thing I need is perfect for the two of you to do. Would you go into the bar, find Lena, and request that she come in to make sure the slideshow is set up?”

At the mention of Richard, her smile falters a little. “It is unfortunate how hard he has taken the situation. He is quite focused on the Government’s offer to buy vineyards. The declining drinking rate has hit many vineyards hard. He is in the minority in his desire to sell and move.”

The phrase, her eyes flashed with anger, came to Ralph’s mind as he watched Lena’s face. Sam was not so subtly threatening her, and she was pissed about it. Ralph hid a wince. Sam was being intense. He didn’t blame him, though. Ralph felt like they had

Lena glanced at Rhiannon. “Neither of those things is my fault.” She turned her attention back to Sam. “What in the world do you want with the router anyway?”

Ralph glanced at the other two. Unsure if they should be honest with Lena or lie. “We want to know who hired the maids,” Ralph explained.

“Oh, that’s all. I can just tell you that.” Lena grinned. “I did. Lawrence is a creep, and I was hoping he’d get punched by someone. Due to his current behavior, he will not be allowed to return next year. Now if only I could get him removed from Grandmother’s will. I’m fairly certain he killed someone in the 90’s, but I can’t quite prove it. Not that Grandmother likely wasn’t involved in covering it up.” Lena looked extremely proud of herself.

Ralph looked at her, confused. That was the most forthcoming anyone had been so far.

“I can confirm that the smell of blood between the head is the same as that on Franklin and Jake,” Finley verified that for everyone. Now that the head had been found, they were not needed. Maybe for the return trip as the guide again, but that was not as necessary. It was theoretically easier to return to the upstairs area.

Finley stood, watching behind them as everyone’s attention was on the head. This place was dangerous enough that they should not leave their backs unwatched. Finley said the next thing slightly over their shoulder.

“When you have satisfied yourselves with looking, let me know. We should not linger here; however, I can ride his blood and see if he knew what killed him.” Riding the blood on the tide of a death was dangerous. One of the most dangerous things Finley could do. Because if they did it wrong, they could ride the death completely and be pulled into death themself.

When the head was first revealed, Connie winced, ever so slightly. Not from fear, not even disgust. But at the sight of death. Her body ached for a moment in the knowledge that she was much too late. She was a powerful healer, but not this powerful. Even still, she felt an urge to reach out and try to heal him, to pull him back to the land of the living. She tucked her hands behind her back and sighed.

It was her roommate and covenmate. A part of her had hoped it wouldn’t be, and his continued absence would remain a mystery. She looked at the head, watching as Franklin and Annika both examined it.

“Frankie, if you need help with the autopsy, let me know.”

She frowned as Annika revealed the beetles. The sugar skulls she recognized as part of the Mexican culture. If she remembered correctly, that was connected with the Day of the Dead. Her frown deepened. They would have to inform his family as quickly as possible. They needed to know, for the sake of his soul. Today was the Day of the Dead. Beetles themselves were sometimes used as a means of protection - guardians of the home. The tidbit that came to her memory that was most interesting was their use as messengers. Was this a message? If it was the message was esoteric enough to be unclear without research.

“Perhaps we should relocate to Frankie’s lab. Unless someone thinks they can get more information from the location.” Finley was right, they shouldn’t linger here too long.

Glimpse’s explanation of the last time they saw each other matched with her memory of it. She wracked her brain for a moment, trying to remember something that Glimpse had said, from Andy’s perspective, almost a year ago. “Uh, you told her to tell James... Thank you, and something about a psychic link?” Andy wasn’t totally sure she had that right. She was panicking a fair amount during that conversation. They were in the murlock tunnels, and Andy remembered thinking about The Time Machine. Max had to come and open a portal to get them out safely.

It seemed they were from the same timeline or universe or whatever, at least. But why did she look like she had gone through some de-aging program then?

“Their parents are MU people. Andy gestured to the three who were Kingston-Grays. Danni explained exactly who their parents were, which hopefully would help with that situation. “I’ll tell you the whole story of what happened from my perspective later.”

Andy was tempted to scream. To just yell and let out her frustration. She was overwhelmed with everything. She wanted to know about the dream. But she had to deal with the fact that her girlfriend and Glimpse were about to fight. Normally, she would let Gideon fight whoever she felt like fighting. Andy wasn’t stupid enough to try to get between Gideon and a good fight. However, she had once seen Glimpse (accidentally) punch someone so hard that their head broke.

“Holy shit, guys. Glimpse, that’s my girlfriend, so could you not threaten her? I asked her to create a perimeter, you know, that thing that people do when they want some privacy. Because if we either don’t make everyone back the fuck off, or just leave to somewhere like my dorm room or something, we are not going to get privacy. So if you two really want to fight, I’m not going to stop you. But could we, before that happens, talk about how the fuck you got to our school, and when I say this, I mean it, how the fuck do you look like a teenager?” She gestured to the mirror that Dorian had offered. It wasn’t perfect, but Glimpse could see that she was not, in fact, a 47-year-old. This was something that needed to be figured out as best as they could, quickly. Andy had a lot of other questions. She also wanted to say a few other things. "No murder, please." This was directed at Gideon. "If we determine she's an imposter or something, then maybe." Not to mention the whole other conversation that was happening about Ser Nemo, which Andy desperately wanted to be part of.

Ben had barely texted Danni and gotten his response when Chase teleported them across the faire. He rated some girl’s costume for Percy. The whole situation is a bit surreal. But hey, there was Danni. Ben did not understand what Chase had told Percy, but Percy seemed to get it. That was what mattered here, Ben supposed. He’d have to remember to ask Chase to explain it later.

“Hey Danni. Sorry. Percy asked Chase for advice, so we came over.” Ben looked at how everyone was gathering around. “Can we stay or should we go back to ice skating?” He didn’t want to intrude. It felt weird and uncomfortable in a way. There was a lot going on that he had just been dropped into the middle of without any context. That made him feel small, and he didn’t like that. Maybe he should have stayed in Chase’s room, wrapped around a cup of tea.

Dobbs nodded at the Walkie-talkie request. “Add it to the list. I’ll grab the list after dinner and head into town to get everything. When I get back in tomorrow morning, I’ll bring in a load of perishables, then ask for all of you to help bring in the rest so I’m not making ten trips alone.” Dobbs didn’t actually know what all was on the list. He did know Marco had added a fair amount, but other than that, he wasn’t sure.

Dobbs glanced over at Nancy. “If you’re good and don’t need anything else, I’m going to get back to work. Yell if you need me I suppose. Or better for my heart, just come find me on the roof of the cabins.” He nodded and walked off, passing Marco and Emily as they walked over.

Em followed Marco’s finger with her eyes. “Hm, okay.” She hoped whatever it was, something minor, they did not need a big issue. Especially if it meant part of the group would leave. Like if Demi got hurt. Dobbs would probably take him into town, and the rest of them would be short a person until Demi came back, if he did. And who knew what sort of trouble they’d get into if it was considered ‘escaping’ or something stupid like that. As Em catastrophised, she walked to where Marco had indicated. Her towel wrapped around her, and her shoes slipped back on, untied and loose.

“Hey Dobbs everything okay?” she asked him as they crossed paths.

“As well as could be, I think. I don’t know much about seizures, but Nancy seems able to talk for herself. She warned us this might happen. She doesn’t seem to need emergency services. I’m going back to work,” Dobbs explained, and off he went. Em glanced at Marco.

“He... is... straightforward.” Em finished walking till she found the gathered group of other counselors. The scene was basically what she expected from how Dobbs said it. “Oh, good, you guys all got the note. Who are we ritually sacrificing?” Em joked, hoping it would relieve some of the tension.

Andy was surprised that the woman was claiming to be Glimpse. She looked younger than the last time they had seen each other. She wasn’t sure of the age difference.

“Give us space guys. Okay. Gideon, help patrol a perimeter for me.” The others were leaving or hesitant to leave. Andy stepped in a bit closer, examining ‘Glimpse’.

“I have some serious questions about how you got here looking some ten years younger than the last time I saw you. I also am with the others on being a little suspicious on if you’re actually Glimpse. But I didn’t know you super well back then so it isn’t like I can ask you questions to verify. I got here via time travel. How about you?”

Andy decided to be upfront. For Glimpse, it would have been nearly 18 years since they had last seen each other. Zari had already claimed she was from the future, so it would be easy enough for Glimpse to put those pieces together.

Ben winced. He hadn’t meant to step on a landmine around Percy. He had caught the half-formed name. Anger bubbled at the mention of Chase’s parents. He had never met them, never would, if he did, he’d punch them. Ben didn’t consider himself a violent guy, but he’d be violent to people who did so much damage to Chase.

“You can tell me stuff like that. If you want. I want to know about your past. Yeah, it doesn’t endear me to your bio parents. But I don’t want secrets.”

He nodded at the mention of catching up with Danni. He was nervous about that because if he had met up with the others... with Percy, who had left... that made meeting up with Danni difficult. Would this semester be a series of trying to hang out with Danni and avoiding Percy? Probably.

“I’ll text him.”

“There, I invited him to join us. If he can, he can; if not, we’ll meet up later.”

George and Richard left the room. Richard was leaning heavily on the other man. George looked back at Tony and mouthed, “Later.”

Elenore was still in the ballroom. If she had eaten, she had taken her food directly from the kitchen, as she had never joined them in the dining room.

Lena looked up as the trio approached her. She had a fairly neutral look on her face, only slightly trending toward annoyed. “First, my name is Lena. Not Leda. Second, AV, so you know how to set up a camera.” Her tone was dismissive. “What in the world could you need from me?”

Ralph shifted, uncomfortable with Lena. She was prickly in a way Ralph wasn’t sure how to deal with. In his normal life, he was in the position of being the expert as a pilot. But right now, he felt like a fish out of water. He glanced through the door by the bar and into the study or library beyond. Climbing up the stairs, laboriously, were George and Richard. Ralph frowned. Interesting. If all the rooms for the family were upstairs, why not go through the foyer and up those stairs? Why go all the way into that room and then upstairs? He heard a beep as a code was entered, and then the door at the top of the stairs opened. He turned his attention back to Lena.

“Could we see the router?”

“The internet isn’t available for guests. Grandmother believes that this event should be free from distractions of the ‘real world’.”

The heat of the day was on the stifling side now. Critters hid from it, taking solace in the cool places of the forest. The sound of Dobbs working paused for a while and then started from a new place. He had finished the cabin he had been working on. At this pace, he would be able to finish the roofs of all the cabins easily. There was a lot more work for him to do. He considered the need for extra hands, more people who were tradesmen. The kids would be helpful, but not in all the jobs that needed to be done.

The only thing that broke the monotony of the day was Demi’s voice, calling, screaming for Zeke. Dobbs paused in his work, looking toward the sound of the yelling. He stood, trying to figure out what was going on. He was responsible for these kids. He sighed and climbed down from the roof to see what the fuss was about. Hoping that it isn’t anything serious.

Emily saw Marco watching. She waved back to him and blew a kiss. Emily missed the scream for Zeke, her head having been underwater. She got out, though, because of Marco. Em gave him a kiss on the forehead, wrapping herself in a towel.

“Hey, dear. Not going to get in?” Her skin felt warm; she knew she had gotten a sunburn, but didn’t care. She’d tan soon enough.

Finley had stepped away from the wall when one of the new ones attempted to blow it up to no avail. They had little experience with such magic types and were a little intrigued. It lacked subtlety. If Jake had not already been shouting, their presence would certainly be marked now. Finley mentally made a note never to take the two of them hunting. They would be very bad at it.

Finley’s tongue very slowly came out and licked at their upper lip. Saliva shone upon it, and they breathed through their mouth. Looking at Jake’s cheeks. The place that Jake claimed Franklin had placed the blood. No wonder the pair smelled so strongly of it.

Connie glared at Barty. She was tempted to flip him off, but she restrained herself. “It is as if I had the opportunity to before people started using exploding butterflies.” The venom in her voice was directed at Barty, and she didn’t want Cassie to think she was mad at her.

“Not that that wasn’t a valiant effort.” She added, directing that to Cassie.

“Hmm, I thought it would be a trick of some sort. If it is just a wall...” Finley said, standing off to one side far enough that any potential debris from destruction would not hit them, but not so far that they too had to shout. Connie wondered if Jake had hearing damage from something.

Connie placed her hand on the wall, slightly to the side of where Cassie had caused her butterfly to explode. She stood there for a moment, feeling her way through the stone. There didn’t seem to be anything under it all other than stone. With her fingers pressed against the stone, she considered her options. She could change the material or move it. If she had been able to isolate something other than stone, she would have moved the material around, freeing the foreign material. Since she hadn’t found anything unusual, she figured transmuting it would be the better plan.

Connie slid her hand to the side, closer to where Finley had first indicated that the trail died. Then she pushed and pulled and reached through reality to reshape it around her desires. There was a delightful sensation that washed through her. It always did when she did this. And the stone shifted, it became paper. It wasn’t a large section of it, only about five feet by five feet, but likely it would be enough for them to continue their quest.
