Well, meat seemed to work, now I just needed to grab one fast enough. I just have to keep putting meat in a cage and trying to close it in time. This is going to be a long hour or so, I thought.
The bushes rustled.
A black-furred felidrake padded cautiously forward, its pink nose wriggling and green eyes wide. It sniffed in the direction of the meat. Its scaly tail swished and its wings shifted patiently.
It caught sight of Alex. Its head lifted, ears perked, curious. "Prr?" It sat down, kneading its paws in the grass, and stared at him again. "Prr?"
It made no more movement toward the cage or the meat. It only stared at Alex with bright green eyes.
Before he handed the cage to Spook he cut and placed a small string of white yarn and a small piece of meat from his leftovers to keep it fed when it woke up. Theodore gently lift the cage and brought it over to Spook when he was hearing distance from the mask man he softly said with a modest smile, "I caught one, Spook... well not really caught it, I just found it in my cage as I was getting ready to catch others." as he finished speaking he gently placed down the small occupied cage in front of the strange masked man, the Felidrake softly stirred awake before going back to sleep.
Spook paused in his painting and tipped his masked face up to Theodore. "Good," he replied smilingly. "Set it down over there." He shifted his position and knelt on the road again, drawing complex shapes on the stones, completely in disregard of everything outside his work.
"Felidrakes? I've never heard of creatures such as these," she said, confused. "If they can teleport, then how are we supposed to catch them? Won't they escape their cages? A noble of the house Anzivino always accepts a challenge when it's given to them, but this sounds like a fool's errand! Do you mean to mock us, Traveller?"
For awhile, Spook appeared not to have heard her. His paintbrush moved quickly and accurately, and an ornate magic circle was beginning to take shape in the middle of the road. He was waiting for something.
Her smile turned impish. Meryn reached forward and grabbed at the paper.
CRACK!
A noise like a gunshot resounded through the forest. The felidrake near Meryn suddenly disappeared and reappeared on a higher branch, tail down and ears back. It peeked down at Meryn around the side of the trunk in complete betrayal.
The felidrake that Theodore had caught -- the one sleeping in a cage near Fiammetta's feet -- also disappeared with a poof! It reappeared instantly in almost the same place -- pop! -- and the cage and felidrake toppled over together. The felidrake righted itself and paced in a circle and huffed, still trapped within the upended cage.
"The cages are made of iron," Spook happily answered Fiammetta's question without looking up from his painting. "They can teleport themselves to exhaustion and never move an inch. Their magic can't cross an iron barrier."
Gave Spook an opportunity to explain the fairy-iron thing. Also, those things are so adorable. Can Fiammetta catch like the runt of the litter or something and keep it as a pet? Please?
Thanks for asking it! Spook will be a bit difficult as a source of information -- he's not very forthcoming unless he's asked a direct question.
Of course if you'd like to find the runt, by all means go for it! As for keeping it -- or any of them for that matter -- that's a question better asked of Spook IC. ;)
@c3p-0h good questions! I hadn't even considered the first option. Hmm... ok yeah, why not? If you're holding it firmly while it teleports (or it's latched onto you), you'll go with it. It doesn't do it very often (like when it's spooked) and it will instantly reappear a few feet away, max.
The cages are all iron. We'll use the old fairy rules and say no magic can cross it.
Spook stood haphazardly in the road, facing the company, a gloved hand clutching the rucksack and the other in a pocket. The mask's glassy eyes assessed each one of them.
The quiet curious one had monkeyed her way up into the branches. The smallest kid had latched onto him, grinning like this was a day at the circus. The red-haired woman had rejoined the group and seemed troubled by the rune. The green-haired one was worshiping a tree; his friend, the peacekeeper, had completely failed to talk him back to reality. @c3p-0h@Irisity@hoppiholla391@Darinthus@Diggerton
A couple of battle-ready sword-wielders were apparently discussing strategy, as far as Spook could tell from this distance. He spotted a boyish young lady with a rifle and thick boots, petting a dog; the dog's owner had the jolted but determined look of a runaway. A redhead with a peaceful smile spoke with a girl who was used to causing trouble, judging by her posture. @Vee@Crimson Raven@DFTBA@Damiann47@Jay Kalton@Magnato
Then there was that young girl with the gray hair and the outfit and the inquisitive eyes; the artist he'd seen drawing back at the gate; the lady with expensive armor, a sword, and a bossy voice; the bearded and neatly-dressed man who seemed lost in his own thoughts; the noble girl who had obviously not given this decision much thought, by the way she was dressed; a burly blacksmith, by the stains on his hands; and a city guardsman who walked along with his head down -- out of embarrassment or in deep consideration for his next prank, Spook couldn't quite tell. @Skittles@Takashi@Turboshitter@Bornlucky@t2wave@needlingAsklepios@jordy0403
The little bells on the trees jingled as Meryn navigated the branches above. The papers in the garland she found each appeared to have been sketched with a tiny ornate circle. When she touched one, the bit of paper made a loud pop noise, like popcorn, and split itself in two.
The Traveller looked up, and for a moment he appeared to watch something invisible floating in the air. With a quiet hum he dropped the rucksack at his feet and addressed the ill-prepared cityfolk.
"Hey," he called out. The mask grinned at them all. "So we're here to catch some felidrakes." Spook reached into his jacket and pulled out a folded, crumpled sheet of paper. He smoothed it out a little and held it up for everyone to see.
"They're fast, they can climb and glide, they can teleport short distances at will, and they need to be rounded up. How ya do that is up to you -- just don't kill them." He stuffed the drawing back in his jacket. "You'll want to check everywhere. Go on." Spook gestured lazily at the forest around them -- the trees, the bushes, the little statues, the staircase.
Here and there were signs of the felidrakes: a swishing marmalade tail under a bush; a pair of ears sticking out behind a little statue; a pair of yellow eyes staring from the crook of a tree; frightened birds flocking away from a moving shadow.
A breeze swirled through the trees. From the top of the stairs came a chorus of hollow whistles and raspy meowing.
There was little left of the tiny temple at the top of the stairs -- the roof and walls had long ago collapsed and been embraced by the forest -- except for a collection of plump statues of varying sizes, their mouths open and whistling as the wind blew across them. A few felidrakes sat on the statues' heads or slept between them.
While the cityfolk were kept busy, Spook knelt down and swiped the leaves and debris away from a mostly intact section of the road. He rummaged in his rucksack until he found a thick bottle of reddish liquid; with a dipped brush he began to draw symbols and shapes and runes in a circular, ornate pattern on the flagstones.
Feel free to find a felidrake wherever you wish, doing whatever you think a felidrake would do. Go nuts with narrative if you like. I'll jump in periodically to spice things up a little. Also, every single person does not need to capture an animal -- you're welcome to work together to capture a single one, or to refuse to participate at all, if you so choose!
@Darinthus That sounds like some really awesome research -- curious about your conclusions! :D
I feel like it would be terrible and asshatty of me to post now when so few have had a chance to post again, but I'm just really inspired, you guys. Maybe I'll write out the next story post and sit on it for a bit. Yeah. I can totally resist posting. XD
On the other hand, I think at least a few characters would be happy for something concrete to respond to. Hmm...
