Seeing how you guys are progressing before I do start to critique everyone. As I said, I have up to 4 slots available and wouldn't like to play it unfair for others.
Massive shame. I used to listen to a bit of Audioslave when I was younger too. :(
Something I may point out is the welcome PM that every new member receives:

The question I have for you guys is do you also feel that this helps with a new user experience and perhaps should we update it with some details on the site?@Vashonn was kind enough to mention that he never really bothered with an intro post due to a lack of activity, so even before we get a chance to interact with the newbies is there something we can do to encourage them to engage in the community as opposed to hiding behind PMs and the usual lurking tendencies.
@Tergonaut
Won't give a full feedback until you finish, mostly cause decisions change and ideas evolve over time, but I can offer some guidance

Skills are meant to be details about the character's proficiencies or abilities that may help them. Clark Kent's powers (Semblance) would be flight and laser vision while as Superman, but his skills would be that he's a skilled reporter so he knows the latest news, or he has a skill for blending in with the use of a different hairstyle and glasses. They are something that sets your character apart, but are not necessarily used to define your character.

There will be water and weather variations within the roleplay. If you have a look at my character she is impacted by sunlight so I can use her to indicate and reference the changing environment around her. Aquatic Respiration does feel like something that wouldn't really fit into the theme or style of RWBY as that is more of a mutant style of ability. As alternate ideas, she might be able to walk across water or utilise 3D space while it's raining, ie: bound up rain as if they were stairs.

Please remember that I will only hold a maximum of 5 players, including the GM. I will also take time to review the characters that are submitted so I can get an understanding for the balance, while also making it fair for those who may be stuck in different timezones or busy outside the forum. Best of luck to all.

Originally from the countryside of Sanus, Lorra has managed to immerse herself quite effectively into the urban lifestyle of Vale. Compared to the modest clothing style that she wore while on her parent's farm, Lorra has chosen to update her wardrobe to that of a darker, more grungy design. She displays her current attire with a shorter, somewhat mismanaged haircut and cloaks her small frame body with a rough, overbearingly large trench coat. Upon first glance her clothes alone will tell you the subtle signs of 'beware', but within that cautionary vibe is a girl with a more softer appeal.

Her red eyes are, not of anger and fury, but of warmth and emotion and they are usually the first trait that people notice. Her soft, pale skin and whitely blonde hair help to draw attention to these vivid irises, pulling curious individuals into an engaging conversation as opposed to a simple side comment. Knowing this Lorral is able to use her terrible sense of charm to try help win over the friendship of others. It doesn't always work as some people will remain stubborn no matter the situation, but this is not something that the girl mulls over too heavily. For now she enjoys her new-found adventure, curious as to where it may lead, nervous as to what lays unseen beyond the next horizon.

Many people have signed up to the four great academies in order to become hunters and huntresses, to eventually take on various paying jobs for money, to leave their mark on the world for future generations, and yet Lorral isn't such a person to hold these desires. While the thought of becoming a skilled warrior for the city has crossed the young woman's mind, the dream of defending and protect her hometown is something that appeals to her lot more.

Lorral's hometown is in an area that unfortunately borders on Grimm territory, an section of land that so happens to be filled with lush nutrients for growing some of the best crops in Sanus. For the majority of her life Lorral has grown up in this rural landscape and she has had to endure time and time again as people ventured out to fight the Grimm, to prevent them from invading the town, to put their lives on the line for their people.

During her late teens Lorral heard about Vale's newly built Academy, a place where one can learn to be a true fighter, and with her parent's farewell wishes she set off on a journey to the school. There she hoped that she would learn more about the world around her, to see beyond the many square miles that she called home, and to better herself as a person. She had no idea that she would be chosen for a special task, to go on a trip towards the Island of Vytal, a trip that would lead onto the adventure of a lifetime.

❖ Solar Lily (Weapon Image)
As the name implies, Solar Lily is a weapon of fire, fury, and a touch of star-struck beauty on the side. It is composed of a long, gunmetal grey body along with a ruggedly thick grip and a small finger pull mechanism. This mechanism is used to activate a series of conductive element along the dull blade edge which in turn will heat up to a brilliant, hot glow; all through the use of Red Dust. Along the back of the weapon is a round cut out near the far end of the blade. This curve can be used to aid the user in a safe two handed plunge attack that mimics the motion of a guillotine, while the sharp tip can be used in a variety of ways from quick poke attacks to an improvised anchor when sliding out of control.

❖ Light on the Feet
Being the small frame person that she is, Lorral is able to manoeuvre herself around the battlefield in a fast, nimble fashion; sometimes to the point where it borders on parkour movements. She is capable of sliding her way into new positions, capable of bounding herself out of the way of incoming attacks, and will use as much of the surrounding terrain to her advantage. This can be a hindrance during heavy hits and wet weather where she may sometimes be a bit too light to take the punch or loose her footing at a moment's notice.

❖ In Touch with Nature
Growing up on a farm and surrounding yourself with nature presents itself with a perfect opportunity for learning about the wilderness of Remnant, and how to survive for when things get rough. Throughout the years Lorral has picked up knowledge about foraging, tracking, and even hunting; all skills that were taught to her by her family and village friends. She may not be able to tell you the exact name of a particular plant, but she will know exactly which berries are used to make the best homemade, wildberry pie.

❖ Leave No Soul Behind
Small towns and villages always teach one important custom, and that is companionship. The knowledge that your ally is your responsibility, that your acquaintance today can become your friend tomorrow, and that the good deeds that you perform in helping them may one eventually be returned when you need it most. Lorral is a female who has grown with these traditions and truly believes that if she was to walk away from a companion that desperately needs her aid, then she is no better than the Grimm that inhabit the earth.

S E M B L A N C E
❖ Solar Empowerment
Lorral's Semblance is an ability that shows it's true strength when the sun is at its brightest; it is an ability that allows her to absorb, harness and project solar energy. When using this Semblance Lorral is able to channel her power into her blade, causing the conductive element to overheat above what the red dust is capable of. In this form Solar Lily is able to produce powerful shockwave of light energy with every slash, energy that can travel through the air towards distant foes. Solar Empowerment can also help rejuvenate Lorral's aura over time, turning her into quite a formidable and tanky foe in the open environment.

Since Lorral's Solar Empowerment Semblance is an ability that shows it's true strength when the sun is at its brightest; cloudy weather, dark environments and night time are all periods where Lorral feels most vulnerable. She is unable to store this energy beyond what is readily available and thus will need to wait until the next bright day to use her Semblance again.

P R E M I S E
Valour & Vale takes place in a time following The Great War, a fierce campaign between nations that came to its final conclusion eighty years prior to the beginning of RWBY. It was during this delicate time that the four kingdoms gathered together on the island of Vytal, a neutral space for where they could form a treaty and plan the future of Remnant. Within this treaty it was discussed that each of the four kingdoms shall build their own Huntsman Academy with the proposed Beacon Academy in Vale, Shade Academy in Vacuo, Haven Academy in Mistral, and Atlas Academy in Mantle.

Along with teaching and training some of the greatest of warriors each academy would home to one of the four gifts to mankind, four relics that represent a physical form of Knowledge, Creation, Destruction, and Choice. As the time, teaching, and construction passed, each day inched closer to when these powerful artifacts would inevitably be relocated from the island of Vytal to their newly built homes within the kingdom academies. It was then that the harrowing discovery was made. Contact with the island—the island that held the four relics that could change the fate of the world—had suddenly and unexpectedly ceased.

Time was of the utmost importance and the King of Vale demanded that each Academy send out their most skilled Hunters and Huntresses to the island of Vytal, a tall order considering that no student had yet to fully graduate from their still young academies. It would take a miracle for this expedition to be completed, but sometimes a little faith is all you really need.

The four kingdoms signed an important piece of legislation that would grant each nation their own territory, that they would vigorously abolish the slavery within their lands, and that each kingdom would be allowed to rebuild and restructure their own governments to that of their personal liking. While it was a step forward for the people of Remnant it did not mean that all the problems, the disagreements, and the conflict would wash away so easily. The strong foundations of trust had been shattered and it would take several years to rebuild and resolve the many grudges that were held against their newly allied neighbours.

After the conclusion of The Great War much of the dust trade that people had grown to know, had collapsed. Regular merchants, trustworthy sellers, and familiar shop fronts had all been raided, pillaged, or abandoned leaving the only reliable source of dust through the ever growing black market or bandit camps. It would take decades for the dust industry to reach it's former glory, for the Schnee family to enter into the fray, but for now those who held dust within their grasps were considered rather... affluent.

The quality and richness of technology during the Great War was much more primitive than that in the world of RWBY. The world famous CCT (Cross Continental Transmit System) was a network that had yet to be fully built, and with Scrolls being a device that was not even rolled out as a concept the majority of communication was still passed through the means of hand delivered mail or short wave radio.

Transportation within this time period held more of a focus on trains, boats and horse carts as automotive and air alternatives were reserved to those who could afford such luxury. Advancements in robotics and cybernetics have never been heard of as Atlas was still focusing on the building of its academy rather than its military might.

The rise of Grimm during, and after the war was always a major concern. The anger, the pain, the sense of despair; all the negative emotions attracted these damned creatures towards mankind played havoc as tensions between kingdoms still ran high. At any point a town could be overrun by these monsters, and in an instant be wiped from existence. Could all this lead to the next biggest disaster since the War?

For this roleplay you will be playing that of a huntsmen or huntress, a representative from the academy of your choosing. You have been given the honourable task of travelling towards the island of Vytal, to meet with your future companions, and to discover the mysteries that have been building up day by day. Each character will begin their journey on route to this location, first meeting at a shipping port in Sanus before venturing across the ocean to the island of Vytal.

Your skills are yet to be perfected, your fighting style is weak, but you believe that this may be a brilliant opportunity to get a step up against your former classmates, and return a hero. It is such a shame to know that for some they may never return to the place they once called home, that this would be their first and final mission as a huntsman.

To keep expectations clear, this roleplay will be focusing on a mixture of character interactions and personal development while also containing a fair amount of slice of life elements and environmental exploration. There will be some action scenes and occasional conflicts that will trouble and challenge your character, however I must stress that if you are joining this roleplay solely for the arena style shoot-out/monster fight, then you may discover the pace to not be of what you expected.

Thank you for understanding and I look forward to working with my future players.

Rules, requirements and important details. Please ensure that you read through carefully and understand what is required of this roleplay.

» The Behaviour of the Roleplayers:
Any player who joins my roleplays must remain on their best behaviour at all times. You are to respect your fellow roleplayers and understand that this project will only work if we focus on having a good time. If any problems should occur they are to be raised with me immediately.
» The Common Rules of Roleplaying:
Do not metagame, powerplay, or godmod your characters. Your characters will only know what they have discovered on their journey, not what has been discussed within the OOC. You will only control your own character and any interactions with other players must be discuss prior to the submission of your post. In some situations collaboration posts may be an option for those more important scenes however they are to be used sparingly, ie: the majority of your posts should be about your own characters. Keep in mind that your character is still human and thus they are someone who can bleed, make mistakes, and occasionally fail.
» Post Length and Dedication:
This is a Casual to Advance level roleplay, meaning that each post will have a requirement of several paragraphs or enough information to depict a scene. Narration, actions, dialogue and emotion are all important features that should be considered as you construct your post. By joining this roleplay you are agreeing to the terms that you will post at least once within a ten day period. Failure to abide by this rule, without informing me prior, will result in the player's complete removal from the roleplay.
» Be Creative and Have Fun:
This is a character driven roleplay that will progress and develop thanks to the decisions that you choose. Keep in mind that the plot will act as a long term driving force for the characters and thus you can use elements of it to your advantage during story telling. Roleplaying is, and always will be, a hobby. Remember that and you will become a brilliant writer.

Listed below will be a topic guide on the details that should be included in the character sheet. I will be selecting sheets based on the quality of the writing; the balance and correlation of their Skills, Weapon and Semblance; and the level of passion for the project. Due to this the "First Come, First Served" expectations don't apply, nor do "Hold my Position".

So you still wanna join? Then show me something that you are proud of!

@dreamingflowers
It's an American Anime by RoosterTeeth. The first trailer is here and that'll give you an idea for what to expect. The black creatures are Grimm, but the design changed when the series started to incorporate white and red masks.

1. What's the posting requirements like? Length and quality has never been an issue for me, but I am juggling a few games (plus real life adulting) and would ideally like something that is once or twice a week on average for posting.

To give an idea for length, I'll reference a recent post I made for another roleplay, but this will give a guide as to what you will be expecting: [Link]
I mentioned that it'll be up to a 10 day turn around between a particular character's posts, and with the low number of people it shouldn't be too heavy for someone. By keeping collaboration to a minimum too, you should find it easier to write in your own, rather than 5am so you can work with that one person. (Joys of being an Australian)

2. Are pictures mandatory? I tend to shy away from them unless I either commission a drawing or someone's kind enough to sketch. I'd be more than happy to write up a decent description.

I enjoy visuals as I do come from an artistic family, but I do realise not everyone will be so inclined. If you happen to come across an image at a later date you can add it in, but if your writing and description is of a quality standard then I don't see a reason to decline.

3. Are characters based on motiffs like the show (e.g. fairy tales for RWBY, cross dressing warriors for JNPR)?

That's all I got for now, I love the detail and effort you put into this already and I've always had half an eye out for a RWBY game in Advanced!

No. I dropped the team theme name cause it's too hard to say, "your name must start with Q", and not everyone will have the same flavour when it comes to team themes.

Also nice to see someone else keeping an eye out for advance level Rwby stuff. ^-^
If you're after some guides @Lady Amalthea might have some good information for you. She has worked on several guides that deal with GMing and RPing roleplays, as well as linking other articles by members.
Source: [Link]

I would probably suggest RPing 101 and maybe glance through some of the others.

If you are new to roleplay I would generally sticking to Casual. They tend to have lighter expectations on length and detail (although some people can expect a bit more, so choose wisely). From there work on your presentation, grammar, spelling, and creativity. When you feel that you are comfortable with half a dozen parragraphs of detailed IC work, start to look at advance.

Advance is generally for longer scenes with an emphasis on depth, explination, and structure. It will discuss what the character feels with all of their senses, the design on the environment that the roleplay is taking place in, and a length that may take some time to write and for you to sit down and spend time to read.

1x1 is a bit different as you probably have more emphasis on playing GM like. You need to work with your partner to create the world, rather than a group one where you can have someone else do that for you. If you do post an interest check mention that you're new to roleplaying and maybe you wanna try a short, quick-shot roleplay. There's a few people that can only commit to a month or so due to school and work so having a holiday time roleplay might work out for them too.
