"Welcome to Avalia, Rei. It is the land that will always take your loved ones from you."

Her words were as true as the fact that grass was green, especially for Malachi. Fighting for what you believed in meant paying the cost of everyone you love. Loving someone would hurt them more than hating them. Unfortunately, that was a fine line to cross. He had lost the last friend he had and he only felt numb. Now he had nothing to lose.

Malachi waved Kenia off when she told him about the blankets, "This is fine. My clothing provides ample warmth."
Malachi had slept a lot in the day so that he could stay up a lot tonight. He leaned against the wall and watched over the three for the next two hours before getting some sleep himself. He had awoken early anyhow to go fetch them food. When he returned, Kenia started to speak to him. He was able to get a better look at her now as the sun lit up the cave. She was rather pretty, he'd admit.

"I suppose I should apologize and thank you for last night. I was incredibly on edge. I don't trust people easily and I won't lie, I still don't entirely trust you, however, you did save us. Thank you for that and I'm sorry about your friend."

"That's alright. I wasn't so friendly myself so I should apologize too. I don't trust anyone myself. Many species, even elves are often self-centered. Thank you for your condolence." They didn't get to say much since Mr. Show-Off Aklenroth started his obnoxious display in the sky. He might as well have added fireworks. His voice filled his mind and he sighed. He should have known the old bone man was going to offer compensation. "The first rule of Avalia, never trust the skeleton man in the sky promising riches." He announced to the now-probably-awake humans.

The show finally ended, only for there to be an encore. The sounds of a horse-carriage filled the air. He jumped to his feet, scooping up Corvina in his arms. He glanced at Kenia as she spoke. "Hide the humans quickly near the back of the cave, there should be a little alcove they can be decently hidden in. I'll go down at talk with Terneus. You're a hunter that came across me last night while you were trying to escape the fire that had come too close to your camp. I offered to let you camp with me. You're on your way to Roshmi City to trade or something."

This plan could work as long as Lord Terneus was dumb as he was arrogant. He was well-aware of him. Malachi nodded to Rei to follow as they moved to the back of the cave into the alcove, setting Corvina down. He began to string an arrow in his bow in case. They already had broken the law by hoarding humans so there was no reason to not assassinate a governor if need be.

Risa took the plate gratefully when Kyran brought it out. Her stomach rumbled at the sight of the colorful, sweet berries and delicious bread. The eggs were still warm. Taking the plate in her hands, she began to politely eat it, a stark contrast to Kyran's behavior. She giggled at his exclamation. She had been brought up with particular manners, but always found Kyran's animalistic behavior rather amusing and a nice change. "I wonder why Jean can't eat. I'd truly like him to enjoy some too." She said thoughtfully to Kyran.

She could guess it might have been some sort of religious thing. Her grandfather had told her that humans had been strange when it came to their worship. Risa wanted to insist he eat somehow without offending him. The poor man had been through so much. It did not feel right to eat without him. She placed her unfinished plate down as Kyran was still eating and moved inside to try to bring Jean's plate out.

Risa took this moment to glance over at Dionaea. She was still sleeping. It was best they let her get as much sleep as they need. Her gaze traveled back to the table where a slip of paper she had yet to notice caught her eye. She moved over to the table, the paper becoming more obviously a letter as she moved closer. Risa took it in her hands delicately as she began to read it:

She bit her lip and held the letter in shaking hands. There was no going back now and she had to commit to this. Risa moved over to the sack of clothes in the corner and began to dress herself in a white, off the shoulder dress that went down to her mid-thighs. The sleeves were long bell sleeves. It was a pretty dress but much more conservative than she preferred. She picked up the long cape and pulled it around her. It was a delicate lavender color that almost matched her eyes. She buttoned the blue-jeweled button over her chest. There was a hood that could be pulled over her head if need be. She moved outside to continue her meal but found Kyran was missing.

Risa moved closer towards behind the hut to see Kyran pointing his spear at two people. "Always so friendly." She muttered as she fluttered her wings to take flight. She hurried herself over. The two were recognizable even from afar. The pretty red-headed human and very particular-looking fairy were an interesting sight. Risa smiled and ran over to throw her arms around Elsea in a hug, " I'm so happy you're okay! You were so brave to aid us!"She let go of her, unsure if humans enjoyed affection. Risa gave the moth-like fairy a hug as well, "Thank you for keeping her safe and coming to find us again. I am very happy you two are alright. Don't mind Kyran, I think he had been too occupied to notice you last night."

When Kyran told her he'd protect her with his life, Risa blushed. She was so lucky to have him in her life. "Just don't you go getting hurt on me!"Risa giggled. She had been about to say more before Jean had emerged. She had immediately jumped into explaining, distracted by his sad demeanor. Jean-Luc was addressing further concerns now but seemed to be willing to go along with things.

Risa could recall the girl Jean mentioned if she juggled her memory. The kind creature had set flame to the wolves to help save her and Dionaea. She hoped Jean-Luc was not on to something there and that the red-haired girl was in good care. Risa wanted to thank her and return the favor someday. That moth-like fairy had seemed familiar. He was no demon, but since she had often seen him in the forest and never in the River Kingdom villages, she wasn't so sure how much he could be trusted. They'd have to find her. The poor thing was owed at least that.

Normally, Risa would have been insulted if someone called her a demon. No one wanted to be compared to creatures so often vile and cruel. However, she could not blame him for his confusion. From what she had read, Earth was a very different world with humans being the sole intelligent species able to create civilization. She hoped they could change his mind and make him understand that they were pure creatures.

Jean-Luc looked so given up as he told them he would defeat Aklenroth. He additionally asked who their attacker had been the previous night. She felt a tinge of guilt. Though she had not been the one to bring him here, she had let it happen. They hadn't been thinking enough about whether the humans would want to be forced to leave their land and fight for another. It was truly a terrible act and unfair to them. In Jean-Luc's case, he would have died if not brought to Avalia.

"The man was an elf aligned with Aklenroth, seeking to destroy or capture humans that could stop him." Risa explained to him. She sighed, knowing her next part might irritate many for her to offer after what they had been through, but she did not believe in force. "You do not have to anything you do not want to. If you want simply to go home, I will help you." Risa told him, "That's a promise. Though if you stay and help, we will be forever grateful and in your debt. "

She let Kyran speak to him and answer his concerns. When Kyran got up to help Jean-Luc up, she smiled. Risa loved what a good friend Kyran could be, to even strangers. "Yes. We are friends and will fight at your side!"She exclaimed with a wide-smile, "We will retrieve other warriors. Humans have divine powers in this land. If we bring all of them together, we can finally beat Aklenroth. There will be many light elves who will support this as well but we must lay low for now. We cannot go into populated areas. "

Risa pointed to the home, "Around the back of this tree is a lake through the bushes. You can wash up and please wash very well as to rid of your scent. We will give you privacy but stay nearby to protect you."

Once in the cave, the elf had whirled around and grabbed him by the shirt, pressing a dagger to his throat. It seemed she did not appreciate being called a girl. He found it foolish to dwindle on such insignificant details during a crisis. They had actual humans and his dragon had just probably died for all of their sakes. She certainly wasn't the grateful type. Once she finished his threat, which he had reacted quite neutrally to, she moved backward, proceeding to ask who he was. She regarded his aid, further proving his theory that she could possibly be an ungrateful bitch or maybe just some sort of uncivilized thug.

He scoffed finally when she was done speaking. The human boy started to speak so he stayed silent, letting him ramble before he'd put in his two cents.

"Hey, hey, you two look as old as I am." The dark-haired boy seemed to be in good shape, definitely at least in better shape than the fainting maiden. Malachi was concerned about their age. They were both definitely beginning their adulthoods at the least. "But surely you elves must be older and more mature than this." Malachi agreed that the silly female elf needed to mature. He decided that this human may be his favorite. He started to then doubt their intelligence as a species, irking him a bit until he urged the blonde female, Kenia, to ease off. Malachi had been trying to avoid his feelings but he supposed he truly could not hide his sadness. One never got used to loss truly.

The male finally let up his talking, asking about healing for the girl.

"That dagger better have been sanitized recently. I do not appreciate possible filth on me." Malachi decided to begin his reply with that. He had waited long enough to lay it down on her. He began to brush off his neck as well as the rest of his clothes. "Dear me, how foolish of me to regard you as so. Maybe I shall use more mature terms and call you an elf hag?" He rolled his eyes, the sarcasm evident in his voice. "A thank you would surely suffice for my service."

He took a bow, greeting them. "My name is Malachi. You may call me Kai. I have a lot of information at your disposal about what is happening that may sway your opinion, human, but we should save it for the morning. Talking at night will just get us all savagely torn apart by a plethora of fun, wild creatures. " He made his way over to the girl, digging through pockets on his belt. There was one large red potion and two small. They would need a lot more, judging by how they had only existed in this dimension for maybe an hour or two and ran into problems.

Malachi knelt by the girl and began to administer the large red potion. He was unsure of her specific ailment but he hoped it would do the trick. "This will help her. She'll feel better tomorrow. Get some rest. "

When the morning came, they would awake to Malachi's silhouette entering the cave toward them. He would be illuminated by the sunlight once in view, straight-faced, three dead squirrels with arrows through them in hand.

The canary quickly flew off Risa's shoulder as the illusion overtook the sky. Risa's breath caught mid-song and she stared up at the translucent, hooded skeleton figure. The rumors were true. Aklenroth really did not have skin. She shuddered, unable to imagine how he lost it or retained life. She listened to his words, the color draining from her face. It had been probable that he would catch on to all this quite quickly but his reaction was worse than they could have imagined. They had to act fast and disguise the human best they could.

"What are we going to do, Risa?" The worried voice made Risa glance to her side. He had sat beside her and put his arm around her. She hugged him comfortingly. She was not sure what the best course of action was but her grandfather had taught her to always step up and lead if no one else was going to. He would say that it was in her blood to be a good leader. Because she trusted his guidance, she always trusted herself and her intuition the best she could.

"We shouldn't stay here long. With the human, we are in constant danger."Kyran had continued.

Risa smiled at him to ease his worry, ignoring her own. "We will be okay here for a short time. No one knows of this area. Our names are known so we can't go home. People will look for us. " She stood up as she spoke, "We need to bathe and then disguise the human. He needs new clothes as well. Then maybe even ourselves. If we can do that, then we can cover some ground and find some others to group up with." Risa reached down to touch his cheek as she finished her instructions, "It'll be okay, sweetie. Have faith in us. "

Risa was terrified. Her hand was trembling. She thought she might cry but she held it in. If people knew of their involvement, their families could be in danger. She had been willing to give up things for herself but not her family and friends. Risa knew she had been impulsive in her actions and her youth truly showed through them. She had been warned the price of freedom was larger than most could imagine.

Before Kyran could reply to Risa, Jean-Luc burst through the door. Aklenroth had been still speaking as the man moved to the trees to relieve himself. Risa bit her lip as he yelled out in surprise at the illusion. She was sure that was uncommon on Earth.

"Why in god's name did you save me? You wanted that reward didn't you?" Risa stared at him with a bit of heartbreak. The poor creature thought they were using him and distrusted them. Though the distrust made her sad, she felt worse knowing he probably felt all alone.

"Oh honey, I'm sorry. This is probably so overwhelming for you." She moved a bit closer to speak to him but didn't get too close to frighten him. "I don't want any reward. His words are probably trickery anyway. Right now, I want to protect you." Risa sighed. She was going to have to explain some of this.

"You were summoned by others because you have the capability to stop that monster you saw. They perished and we are continuing their cause. He is an evil being named Aklenroth that controls our land. He hoards much of the country's money and kills anyone who defies him. He has murdered many and we have no freedom with him as our leader. "Risa explained slowly, pausing for a moment to let him take that information in. "So, these creatures who summoned you are called Elves who brought you here in hopes of you helping them. Aklenroth killed two people who were very special to me and I want to stop him. The other girl and I are creatures called fairies. You may have heard of us in stories, perhaps. We are like you humans except we have wings and abilities to tend to nature. Our job here is to take care of the forest. That is why I could heal you since I aid in the plants and flowers in their growth. "

Risa exhaled. This was all very difficult to sum up but she did her best. "I am sorry you were dragged from your land and into this. It's a lot to take in. I prepared you some breakfast inside and I can show you where you can bathe. I can tell you more after you take some care of yourself."

Risa did not wake up early often but today, she had been the first one to wake. Her eyes had fluttered open to the dimmed room, her vision being slow to register objects around her. So instead, she stared up at the wooden ceiling. It was familiar, but it was not her home. She furrowed her brows, resting her arms on the soft blanket on her body. Information was downloading to her brain as she recalled the night before. It took everything not to yelp out in surprise as the last situation she remembered being awake in made adrenaline course through her veins. She looked around wildly, her gaze fixating on the nearby red bunch of hair a few inches away from her. She turned on her side to stare at Kyran. He seemed to be in good health. Poor guy was passed out, exhausted. They had not slept in the same bed since they were kids but it did not feel uncomfortable. She felt closer to Kyran and Dionaea than her own parents sometimes. She pulled the blanket up over his shoulder to keep him warm. She rubbed his cheek for a moment and smiled.

Slowly, she began to dislodge herself from the blankets and place her bare feet onto the wooden floor. She was careful and dainty with her steps. The cool touch of the wood to her bare feet made her shudder. Risa glanced around. Hades was missing but he always went in and out of areas. He never sat still. She was sure he was informing her parents. Dionaea looked like Sleeping Beauty herself, tucked into her bed with her lovely blonde hair falling off the pillow. The human was asleep sitting up, probably tuckered out from the long night.

Poor soul. She thought sympathetically. It was quite cruel now that she really thought of it. He had been plucked out of his world and thrown into theirs. Maybe if things had been different, he could have appreciated the wonderful magic and life that Avalia possessed. It was hard not to enjoy. There were sights he could never behold in his world that Risa had felt so blessed to be able to lay her eyes on. However, this man had been thrown into violence and cruelty immediately. Still, he had come here close to near-death so maybe he felt better off here.

Risa had never healed someone so terribly hurt before. In different circumstances, her mother and teachers would have been so proud. Though she was sure her mother would have worried over putting her life in danger for a stranger. Despite it, Risa felt pretty good this morning. She often did not need much sleep to shake off the weariness. Perhaps all the practice of healing small creatures in the forest had really worked out in her favor. Risa could not turn away any animal in need, not even an insect.

The young fairy moved over toward the door, opening it only a crack so the sunlight would not pour in and wake her friends. After squeezing her slim body through the crack, she shut it behind her. Her waist-length, rosy hair billowed out in the morning breeze, appearing larger in mass due to the petite body it was attached to. The sun was barely peeking out over the horizon through the trees. It was dawn. The sky was a beautiful assortment of hues of warm colors that contrasted the greenery around them. The sounds of birds chirping and other creatures waking up for the day could be heard. Peace could be found in even the darkest of times.

Risa took a deep breath, letting the peace move her to better emotions before she moved back into the tree home. It only took a quick sweep of her eyes to know that this had been her brother's secret home. He had used this more secluded home to get away and do his studies in private. Their parents owned a few homes here and there. She would never brag or speak of it, but her family was one of the wealthier ones due to their royal ancestry. Her mother had been a princess a hundred years back. Her grandfather had been king of the River Fairy Kingdom.

The aroma of sweetbreads quickly lured Risa toward the table. She began to unload the basket as quietly as possible, arranging breakfasts for everyone. Berries were equally placed into four plates first. Then, Risa sliced up apples to place in everyone's plates. That took a bit of time but then she began to busy herself with the jam. It was a sweet yet tangy raspberry and ludiberry, a fruit native to Avalia, mix. She spread it out on a couple of pieces of the white, spongy bread. She would have loved to bake it for them but they did not seem to have an oven. The last thing in the basket seemed to be about a dozen eggs. "Oh dear," She whispered under her breath. These would have to be cooked.

She stood up with the eggs with a pout. Risa then recalled a memory of a firepit arranged behind the home, grabbing a black pot. She tip-toed out of the home once again to the outdoors. She ran to the other side of the house once outside and crouched down by the circle of rocks. There was some firewood thankfully in the middle and also by the back of the tree, stacked up. She got to work starting a fire, something she was terrible at. It had taken her thirty minutes to figure it out. She began to arrange some sticks and a plank of wood to create something fit to boil her eggs on. Water had been necessary of course, so Risa had hurried over to a nearby lake to fill the pot before putting the eggs in.

Risa brought the boiled eggs soon after and began to arrange them onto everyone's plates. She couldn't wait to surprise everyone with the breakfast she had prepared! Her mother had taught her there was no better way to show love than with a meal. It would make them all feel better after a long night. Her own stomach began to rumble at the different smells of the food but she knew she had to wake for the others to awaken. She decided to go and sit outside so she didn't have to stare at the delicious food while she waited. Risa kept the door a crack open so that she would hear when they awoke.

The grass was cool yet comforting to sit in. Risa laid her legs out and leaned against the trunk of the tree, her eyelids shut as she relaxed. Seemingly loud tweeting filled her ear, making her eyes open. A yellow canary sat on her shoulder, tilting his head at her. "Oh sweetums," Risa cooed and began to gently move the back of her index finger over his belly. "You always find me, my beautiful boy." She giggled at his happy chirps in reaction, continuing to pet him as she awaited the others. Risa hummed quietly a song to the bird, knowing how much he enjoyed music.
