For thousands of years, mankind had been influencing the circumstances we had been given by nature. Some of the results, such as pollution and climate change, had been detrimental. But many had been beneficial as well. Thanks to selective breeding, we domesticated animals to serve as pets and working animals. In crops. selective breeding, and later, genetic modification, had led to crops that could sustain the ever-increasing human population, with higher nutritional values, agricultural yields, and better quality in the produce. Humans had been tampering with nature since the beginnings of civilization; it was only a matter of time before we started tampering with our own nature as well.

The development and perfect of genetic engineering technologies had been one of the major miracles of the 21st century. The vast majority of the human genome had been mapped since 2003. And for many years, genetic engineering had been used in dozens of medical applications that saved and improved the quality of millions of lives. Thanks to the roots of this technology, insulin and human growth hormone could be produced on a massive scale, vaccines could be produced and perfected, and dozens of diseases could be treated. Before long, gene therapy, which involved directly replacing human genes with functional copies, was helping humanity cure cancer, Parkinson's disease, and a whole other host of genetic-based illnesses.

When we started screening children for genetic disorders, and ultimately altering the child's DNA to prevent such conditions as Cystic Fibrosis and Tay-Sachs disease, only the “crazy, anti-progress” people, the same types of people who had once opposed vaccinations, were really up in arms about it. Surely modification of the human genome would cut down on medical costs, improve lifespan, and help more people live happy, productive lives.

But who could establish the line between what was preventing a disease, and what was altering the traits of humanity? The line between what was a “flaw” and what was a simply a unique personality trait became blurred. We gradually increased the definition of what would be “screened” out, and we began to select for more “desirable” traits. In 2047, the first “Pizza Baby” clinic opened up, catering to the very rich and allowing parents to select the exact appearance, best traits, and even the blueprints for the personality of their children. As the technology became more commercially available, even the lower middle class could afford to “start their children off right,” not only without diseases or disabilities of any kind, but with increased musical and artistic ability, better athletic ability, and higher natural intelligence. It was understood that environmental factors played a role in many of these, but as long as the genetic predisposition was there, parents could know that they were starting their children off on the best possible foot.

This was all well and good, and slowly but surely, the physical standards for certain professions went up. To train as a pilot, you had to have far better than 20/20 vision in both eyes. To train as an astronaut, you had to be in top physical condition that no one could have achieved without being born with the Genetic Procedure. Soon enough, health insurance companies would screen DNA sequences and could deny people coverage based on their predisposition towards disease or certain behaviors. Essentially, health care was universal, so long as you were not genetically altered. Soon enough, laws were in place, allowing DNA screenings to become an integral part of a job or college interview. DNA information was supposedly private, unless an individual had any desire to function in society. Airports and other high-security buildings, verified your identity by simply taking a painless blood sample. You could pay for groceries at the store in much the same way.

It was not long before those unlucky enough to be born in what was once “the natural way,” and was now considered “the backward method,” were stigmatized, discriminated against, and relegated to the jobs no one else wanted to do. Such individuals were called derogatory names such as “in-valids,” “degenerates,” “god-children,” and “accidents.” What had once been a miraculous technology, was now just as easily used towards greed, intolerance, and the subjugation of those based on what their parents had or had not provided them as embryos.

Ethan Morrow was unfortunate enough to be one of those children. In the year 2093, his parents had birthed him “the old way,” and he had suffered most of his life because of it. He was was shorter than the average male now, and was bullied through most of his school life because of his eyesight, appearance, and the general knowledge that he was an in-valid. Bullying was nothing new in the world, but children like Ethan were just the newest trend.

But the eighteen-year-old male thought little of that right now, his backpack slung over his shoulder as he walked leisurely to his Robotics meeting, one of the few places in his life where no one cared that he was weird or different. He crossed the suburban center carefully, heading from his in-valid dominated suburb to a more middle-class one where his robotics team met. Like many teenagers for many generations, he occupied the time engrossed in his (a few generations old) cell phone, listening to music and reading random articles on the Internet while his feet took the familiar path to his destination. As a result, he did not notice that he was approaching one of the frequent hangouts of one of one of his greatest tormentors and his friends, and that they had noticed him from a fair distance.

The charms jangle lightly as the branch they are tied to is disturbed. It shakes slightly, dipping under the weight of the feline making it's way towards the end. Dipping lower and lower the branch threatens to break, but at just the right moment the feline leaps off to the top of an old brick wall not a foot beneath the rustling leaves. With slow lolloping grace Yu makes his way down the length of the wall, a happy little purr in the back of his throat. 'That was a good breakfast. I should remember that family, they seem very kind' He pauses to stretch languidly, the sun overhead already warming the rough brick beneath his paws. His moth stretches wide, revealing a full set of unnaturally white teeth for a cat. 'I wonder if they always have fish in the afternoon. I should check' Yu glances back the way he came and with a curl of his tail continues on his little trek.

He's walked this path many times in the last few weeks. When he arrived in this town only a few months ago, the youkai was unsure if there would be any good places for him to get settled, however after a thorough search he at last found a part of town not completely taken of by human advancements. While he would never shun the city dwelling youkai, he himself prefers a more natural atmosphere. A ray of sunlight strikes his back and the white fur there seems to gleam brightly for an instant. The first youkai he met after arriving asked him how he received such a grievous injury, however Yu declined to say. The scar, so he keeps insisting to himself, is just a reminder at this point. A reminder to be cautious, and to never go too far in your trust to anyone.

Still purring happily he crawls up a steep inline in the wall and at last arrives at his destination. The high stone archway running over one of the main thoroughfares between the suburbs and the center of the city is, in the cat's opinion, the best place to nap at mid day. Turning his eyes to the sky for a moment he listens closely as a faint breeze wisps by, ruffling his fur ever so slightly. His eyes close in concentration and deep inside his purr grounds to a halt. 'The whispers are harsh today. Something is coming' His eyes open slowly, the golden orbs returning to the earth below as a slight movement catches his attention. 'There he is again' Moving carefully to one edge, then across to the other as the young man passes beneath the arch, Yu keeps his eyes locked on the figure as it passes by.

For over a week now Yu has taken to watching him carefully, the sometimes faint, sometimes obvious, signs of abuse and fighting having caught his attention. 'It's bad enough when humans go to war, but even in this peace, such violence towards one another. . .' His keen eyes pick out a couple new injuries on the boy and a pain runs through his chest. The warning whispers on the wind set his feet in motion and without much thought Yu begins following behind the boy, keeping high up and out of sight as he tracks him through town. The streets are busy at this hour, however the boy seems to pay them no heed. 'Always watching those little devices. I wonder if any humans look at the world around them any more' As the young brunet enters an area with less people about Yu risks getting a little closer, following just out of sight of the boy's periphery, not knowing that there is no periphery to hide behind from this side. The wind floats past again, it's warning louder this time making Yu's fur stand on end. 'Trouble'

*Smack*

Ethan finally looked up as his old device was swatted out of his hand, unhooking the headphones as it fell to the ground. A sneakered foot hovered over it, threatening to smash the antiquated, but still quite useful, cell phone. The in-valid quickly moved his headphones off of his ears and looked up, his single working eye catching the unpleasant sight of his greatest tormentor, Matthew Corlani, through the frames of his glasses. Though at first glance his eyes appeared whole, his optic nerve had not fully developed as a child, and his left eye was very myopic.

“Hey, freak. You think you can ignore me?” Matthew's voice echoed in Ethan's slightly disoriented ears. He noted carefully the two other males and one female who stood behind Matthew. Best odds ever, four valids against an in-valid. I swear, if Augs are so much stronger and more advanced than in-valids, then why the fuck do they need four people to subdue me? he thought sarcastically. But he did not speak his mind. With a bit of luck, and a bit of diplomacy, there was still a chance he could get out of this without adding anymore bruises or cuts to his repertoire.

“Well, I seem to have been doing a good job of it before you knocked that phone out of my hand,” he pointed out, looking his enemy in the eyes and vainly attempting to inject a note of humor into his tone, which threatened to turn more hostile by the second. He never had been very good at keeping his temper in check. That's usually why authority figures almost solely blamed him when he got into fights with bullies like this, even though he never started them. Because it simply had to be his fault, since in-valids had such violent tendencies and all.

“I didn't say you could use that tone of voice with me, idiot degenerate,” Matthew retorted quickly. For the moment, Ethan just sighed, realizing he should have been paying more attention when he crossed this area of town.

“Look, I have a meeting to go to, and I'm really too busy for this shit. You are probably too busy for this as well, really. If you'll just let me go, I'll be out of this area in a few minutes,” he reasoned, trying to reason with the other teen. Much to his dismay, Matt's foot still hovered dangerously close to his precious phone.

“Oh, you're in a hurry? What a shame. I've got all day... But you know what, you're right. Let's just let this one slide for now, shall we?” the valid replied congenially, picking up Ethan's phone and taking a step towards him. Am I really going to get out of this so easily? the near-victim thought incredulously, stretching his hand out to take the device, his face accidentally portraying a glimmer of hope.

But then Matthew threw the device on the ground and stomped on it, clearly shattering the screen. Taking a careful look at Ethan's dejected face, he looked at him with mock sympathy. “Ah well, it was a piece of shit anyway. Just like you.” He took another step towards his target.

“Look, what do you want? You've smashed my phone. Good job. But I have to get to work. So are you done now?” Ethan demanded defiantly, looking up at the ringleader who had to be a good six centimeters taller than him.

“Grab him for me, would you?” Matt said carelessly to his friends, not even stooping to reply to Ethan's protests this time. With that, the in-valid finally came to his senses and tried to run, but he was too late and too slow, and was quickly tackled to the ground, one of the males straddling him, and Matthew hovering a sneakered foot over his face. Ethan was forced to be painfully aware that at any minute he could easily suffer the same fate as his phone just had.

The sleek silver and black body bunches and coils as Yu paces back and forth. His sharp eyesight caches each movement, every twitch, even the slightest shift as the events unfold before him. In the shadows beneath an overhang he goes unnoticed in the darkness. He is a good twenty feet away from the goings-on between the humans, but he catches every word as the young man tries to talk his way out of a confrontation. 'Smart. It is best not to fight when a fight is not needed' The wind drifts past again but this time along with it's warning he catches the scent of the humans. 'That rancid odor. They all have it, save for the little one. He smells better, more open, closer to the earth' His head perks up, ears forward as his body stiffens. 'They will let him go? I did not sense such honor in them. . .' The only part of him that moves as the boy reaches for his little device is the very tip of his tail.

It twitches slowly back and forth as he concentrates on the scene. He's never been wrong before, but there's always a fir- 'Shameless be-fouler!' His fur, already stiff from the tension, flares out. His tail becomes a large poof as it stands up rigid behind him, the injustice if the situation drawing a fierce snarl from his chest. The sound goes unnoticed by the humans as a loud car rumbles past one street over. 'Vile, putrid things!' His anger boils, so long unused but still as fierce as the day it was born. As the cruel humans pile atop the already battered boy Yu leaps down from his lookout spot and stalks rigidly towards them. His lips are pulled back in a furious snarl, and his movements are more like that of an angry dog than a ticked off cat.

Using his size to it's full advantage he draws in a deep breath and practically roars at the youngsters. The sound catches their attention and as all eyes turn to him the looks behind them anger him even further. 'Nothing has meaning for these children. Everything is beneath them, and not worth considering' The one standing with it's foot over the boy's face laughs openly.

“What's this? A little holo protector kitty?” He looks down at the young man beneath his shoe. “Do you really think something like that's going to save you?”

Yu can't take it any more. In an instant he charges, launching himself towards the center of his anger. He has just long enough to look up before the image before his eyes shift and instead of a feline in mid pounce, a man is flying directly at him. The youkai's claws extend and sink deep into the shocked boy's shoulders and as he falls backwards with Yu atop him, Yu's tail lashes out. It coils around the throat of the one sitting astride the tormented child and as he lands his gives the appendage a sharp jerk. The kid goes flying, freeing the young man to do as he will now that all attention is on the nude man with feline body parts. His claws sink further into the bully's flesh drawing a long scream from him. Speaking above the howl of pain Yu hisses, “You do not deserve the breath The Creator has given you.” Sanding he turns to the others. His arms hang at his sides, the muscles still tense as the blood drips from hooked claws. The owner of that blood dissolves into fearful mumblings as he tries to scoot away from Yu, and the group looks tense and ready to scatter at any second.

Like his adversaries, Ethan was so utterly shocked by the appearance of this nude-cat-human thing that for a good thirty seconds, he did not even realize that the boy was no longer on top of him. He watched the fight, if such a one-sided confrontation could even be called that, incredulously, his mouth gaping open in shock. But Ethan was an intelligent teen, and despite his shock, he had enough presence of mind to see an opportunity here.

“I hope you like my invention. Now get out of here, assholes,” he commented coolly, staring right into Matt's eyes. That insane little bit of ad-libbing was enough to send the other kids running, much to Ethan's amusement. He was not sure who had sent this weird robot, but he would have to thank them.

“Who are you? What are you?” he asked the strange nude being, looking up at the cat-like thing. “Who sent you? Why did you save me?” The idea that this creature was a magical youkai of legend was completely alien to him, right now the working theory was that the thing was a robot. Or that he was hallucinating and had imagined the whole encounter. He actually had no idea what was going on, and it was only by a miracle that he had been able to pass off the whole encounter as something he had planned. “Oh, and sorry for calling you mine or whatever, I was just trying to get them to go away.” What am I doing, talking to this thing?! I really am going crazy. It has to be a robot or something. But I don't know of a robot that can move like that. And I don't see any mechanical joints and servos. What the hell is this? he thought, trying to understand what was going on.

The youkai remains tense, his eyes glaring around at the others. One of his ears snaps in the boy's direction when he speaks and he can't hold back a chuckle at the sight of them fleeing. 'This kid is smart. Taking advantage of this really odd situation like this. Yes I. . . .' His whole body freezes as the reality of what he's just done begins to sink in. Before he really has a chance to come up with something solid, or even a good excuse to make himself feel better, the voice sounds from behind him again.

He turns his head just far enough to see the young man still laid out on the ground. 'Only time will tell if this was worth it' He listens silently to the questions, trying to come up with answers. However when the boy apologizes to him his mind clears and all he can do is smile. “I am what I am, here of my own volition.” His voice is a bit rough from lack of use, but the low purr in the back of his throat helps to smooth everything out a little. “You do not deserve the things that happen to you young one, and I just could not take it any more.” He turns a bit more, looking upon the human with both eyes. His smile is very soft, and cat like, his tail moving lazily back and forth.

He moves slowly closer to the kid, as he moves his body transitions smoothly into his animal form until at last he stands as his fully feline self beside the boy. Looking down into his face he licks his lips carefully and murmurs, “I did not mind being called yours young one.” With that, he jumps over the young man and slinks off around a corner. Once out of sight he begins making his way slowly back to his sleeping perch. 'I can not believe I just did that. I even spoke to him while in disguise! I think I have lost my mind. The elders would skin me alive if they knew about what I just did' He growls lightly, his brain paining him slightly from the stress.

Somewhere in the midst of his shock and confusion, Ethan stood up and brushed himself off. His jaw dropped as he watched the strange creature morph from his mostly human form back into a form indistinguishable from a large cat. But then the figure started to leave. For a brief moment he was frozen, afraid that he might have imagined the whole thing somehow, but he had to find out. Grabbing his backpack, Ethan ran in the direction that the creature had disappeared. He did not immediately see him, in either form, but spoke anyway, hoping that the cat-creature-robot-thing could hear him.

“Considering what I've just seen, that's not much of an answer. Please, who are you? Thank you for rescuing me, but I don't understand,” he declared out into the air. Yep, that's it. I'm completely fucking insane. I just had a goddamn hallucination. All of it was a hallucination. But... but... Ehtan looked down at his cracked phone. How could a hallucination break my phone? Maybe I broke my phone, I read somewhere that sometimes schizophrenics interact with their environment and think that the hallucinations did it. Yep. I'm crazy. That's it. That's the only explanation for a morphable cat-human thing to just chase my bullies away. I mean, it makes sense, my genes are imperfect. Of course I'm more prone to schizophrenia. But, if I'm crazy, then how can I know I'm crazy? God I need help... the understandably confused teen thought to himself, his thoughts a rambling jumble of conflicted emotions and ideas.

His ears twitch slightly and the feline figure freezes. The sound of sneakers pounding the pavement draws Yu's attention and he turns towards the sound. 'It sounds like he is running this way' A faint panic starts up in his chest and his head whips around, seeking some place to hide. []'Cure the march of progress, there is not a plant to be seen!'[/i] At last his eyes fall on a grouping of old machine parts piled beside the sidewalk. He dashes behind them quickly and ducks down low. Through a rusty crack in a large gear Yu observes the boy coming into sight an instant later. 'What does he want? Most people try to forget sightings like this. . .'

“Considering what I've just seen, that's not much of an answer. Please, who are you? Thank you for rescuing me, but I don't understand,”

Yu can not help a faintly toothy cat smile when the boy thanks him, but it falls quickly as he tries to figure out what to do next. 'He obviously is not going to just forget it, so maybe I should just talk to him? Perhaps I could ask him not to say anything. . . .' He shakes his head with a sigh. 'That has never worked. I could always use some magic to befuddle him, but I. . . I do not want to do something to this boy. Not with as little control as he already has over what happens to him' His eyes return to the young man, his stomach churning at the look of obvious almost frantic confusion on his face. 'I can not leave him like this'

Slowly Yu slinks out from behind the pile of parts, his tail moving slowly back and forth as he keeps his eyes locked on the boy. He continues forward until he's in the middle of the wide walking path and looks directly at the boy's face. Slowly his tail whips back and forth and he turns away. Taking a few steps down the walk he pauses and looks back. Snapping his tail a few more times he bounds a few more steps away. Pausing again he looks back at the boy, then breaks into a steady run. 'If he should want to follow, he should be able to keep up with me at this speed' Not looking back until he reaches the arch over the walk he stops only long enough to ready himself for a jump. With a fantastic leap he flies all the way to the top of the arch, a good 20 foot jump. Settling gently on top he sits, curling his tail around his feet he at last looks back to see if the boy followed.

There was a part of Ethan that simply wanted to forget the entire experience and wanted to go to his meeting as if nothing had happened. But unfortunately, his curiosity and his need to determine once and for all if he had fallen off the deep end, won out. After only a slight hesitation, he took off after the figure ahead of him.

They wondered quickly through several streets, and the cat-morph thing was quite fast. Ethan was no athlete, but he was well enough in shape, and his asthma was under control enough that he was able to keep up. Fast as the figure was, it seemed to be flying along at a speed just fast enough to keep him moving, but not fast enough to lose him. Vaguely, in between his panting for breath, Ethan wondered if this was intentional.

They traversed across several smaller suburban neighborhoods and ran about a third of a kilometer until they found themselves in a small, but often deserted, park. Ethan thought he might collapse, but he did not even sit down. His curiosity would not be denied.

“Please, I need an explanation. I have to know if I'm crazy,” the young man pleaded to the cat figure, feeling like once again, he was most certainly insane. I probably should have run away. What kind of idiot sprints around a neighborhood following their hallucinations? came the thought, unbidden, to his mind.

Yu's lips curl into a cat smile as the boy expresses concern over his sanity. 'He followed, yet he questions on if the something was actually following was something to be followed' His tail waves slowly back and forth, much of his anxiety tapering off after the run. As his hear rate returns to normal he begins pacing back and forth over the arch, his eyes remaining locked on the boy below. 'Should I answer? I took him this far, away from the haunts of all of my kind I know about which dwell in this city. Why would I not speak? He speaks to me, not with fear of me in his voice, but fear for himself and his mind' Stopping in the middle of the arch Yu walks to the very edge and sits down, his tail curling around his feet.

'It would be cruel to not assuage his fears when it is as simple as a touch of reassurance' Bringing up a paw he rubs it over one ear, licking it as it comes before his mouth. “You are not crazy Young One, least not if your proof of this would be my appearance in your life and my inexplicable actions.” A low purr rumbles through his chest as he puts his paw back on the stone. “Just because the world has chosen to forget about us, or simply deny our existence over the ages, does not mean we exist no longer. I and my kind have always been, and will always be, for it is in our nature to adapt, and adapt we have.” Letting out a yawn Yu lays down, his paws danging over the edge of the arch.

The winds pick up and a small cloud passes over the sun, catching the area into a faint shadow. “I can not speak for long, other humans come, so the wind tells me.” The sun comes once more from behind the clouds and the warmth relaxes Yu's feline body, drawing forth another yawn. “I have watched you, day after day, my nature bringing from my a sympathy I had long forgotten as I saw how it is you suffer. My race has always felt protective of humans, but your suffering draws me in a way different than other.” His eyes fall once more to look into the young human's. “That is all I can say, for my understanding is little more than this on the matter of my earlier actions, and the others draw near.” With that Yu lays his head down, keeping only one eye open to watch the boy.

Ethan was flabbergasted by the whole experience, and for an embarrassingly long moment, he just stood before the creature with his mouth hanging open. He had seen something so far beyond his experience and understanding that no words would greatly alleviate his fears. Only time could possibly help him come to grips with all he had seen. He shook his head and stared at the creature.

“I... I don't know what to say,” Ethan mumbled, staring at the creature. “I need some time to think about this.” And with that he ran off towards home. Honestly, he was too shaken up to spend much time around a group at the moment. It seemed that either hallucinations or an encounter with a magical creature seemed like a good reason to skip a club meeting.

When he reached home, he ignored his mother sprawled out on the couch, and noticed that his father was away. The last thing he wanted was to tell them about his experience. Hell, they would probably have his crazy ass committed to an institution. So he walked down the hall to his room and sat down at a piano he had bought cheaply and had paid for both the cost and the professional moving and tuning himself. Trying to calm his thoughts, he played the “Moonlight Sonata” from memory, along with a few Chopin Nocturnes and a Mozart Sonata.

But after about ninety minutes, he stood up, opened his laptop, and proceeded to research everything he could about hallucinations, magical creatures, and strange sightings from history. There were certain creatures that could change shape at will, which traversed several religious and cultural stories. Most commonly, they were called youkai. Some modern day “pagan-like” religions believed that the youkai had always existed, but in the last few hundred years had gone into hiding to separate themselves from the onward advance of humanity. Ethan had to admit that it sounded eerily similar to the cat-thing's story.

His research and intermittent piano practice lasted long into the night, far longer than he should have stayed up on a Sunday night, as it was a school night, after all. But eventually, Ethan changed into his pajamas and fell asleep.

~*~*~

The next morning, Ethan awoke, dressed for school, and hopped onto his bike towards that dull building where he spent most of his time reading about other subjects on his laptop, or (now shattered) cell phone.

The humans the wind warned him about walk past one street over while the boy stares blankly up at him. Yu however never takes his eyes off the youth standing stunned down below. He can not help but watch and wait until he eventually rushes off. 'He at least looked a little calmer there at the end. I hope my explanation was enough. I'm not sure what would happen if he needs more to feel safe with me around' Yu shifts a little, legs flopping around a bit while he re-positions himself to get more comfortable. 'I mean, I don't plan on ever doing something like that again, I mean it was crazy to do in the first place. But. . .' He lets out a little kitty huff. 'I do not regret it' With that in mind he shifts one more time before letting himself slip off into a nice warm sleep, the sun coming out from behind the cloud like a blanket of light.

Late into the afternoon he wakes, stretching out to his full length while still resting on his side. 'I think of creatures like squirrels and mice and I can not imagine having to be so alert all the time A faint little meowing noise comes out as he rolls on to his stomach to watch a couple pass beneath his arch. The girl looks up at him, giggling at his cute face as his head and arms dangle off the warm stone. He lets out another meow as they pass then he shuffles to his feet fro a quick cleaning before he leaps down to the pathway below. His senses activate and after some wandering back and forth he takes off towards one of his favorite places to get a hand-out. At the edge of the suburb is a little park, and most days a nice old man runs a stall there for the kids full of all sorts of tasty treats.

He calls Yu his “special customer” and every time he shows up it's almost as if the man knew he was coming, a plain hotdog cooled and ready for him. Today is no different. As he comes around the corner, the park and stall coming into view, Yu can smell that the man has been cooking. Because meats are always best fresh, he only cooks his frozen meats when the customers ask for them. However there are no people around, but the smell of hotdog still lingers in the air. With a purring myau noise Yu saunters up to the stall and the old man chuckles down at the furry beast. “Ah, there you are. I was wondering when you'd get here.” Scooping up the hotdog he leans down and hands it to Yu. The youkai takes it carefully by the end and wanders over to a bench to eat it. He's not one for eating dirt so he'd rather the bench than the ground. “My special customer is such a dainty eater.” the man says with a chuckle and Yu decides not to respond today.

'Do not need another human finding out just how smart this cute little kitty is' he muses, then with one last look at the man Yu heads off to explore the city. The rest of the day he spends running here and there, checking out various human gathering places. He doesn't want to admit it, but this day of adventuring into the thick of the city is because he doesn't want to face any of his own kind for a while. Many of them know he still has a very strong fondness for humans, and he's not sure if the wind will have told them that something has happened that can be traced back to him. When at last the sun sets for the evening Yu crawls up into his favorite tree near the swimming pool of a small park and unlike most of his feline brethren, he falls swiftly to sleep and sleeps through the night.

Once again the sun's brightening of the sky wakes the scared youkai and like a great lump of fur Yu slowly scoots along the branch until he can drop off on to the fence running between the park and the house closest to it. His sensitive little paws lead him automatically tot he archway over the sidewalk even before he feels fully awake and it isn't until the tell tale sound of a familiar sounding bike coming towards him that Yu opens his eyes all the way, turning towards the noise. He crouches low, knowing that he may cause a distraction the boy doesn't really need right now. Once past Yu hops up to watch him go. 'I really should find somewhere else to spend my days, I am in deep enough as it is, and if I do not pull away now, I may never be able to pull my way out of all this' Letting out a faint while Yu lays down on the cool stone and determines that after a quick nap he'll go find somewhere new.

However, about an hour before the boy normally comes home from school, passing under his arch for the second time in any particular school day, Yu finds himself rising. The wind licks his whiskers and sides, but without hesitation or even a conscious effort he finds himself jumping down to the wall lining the sidewalk and moving at a fair pace towards the boy's school. He's followed the scent a few times, some time after the boy has taken it, to the building where he gets his education, but this is the first time he's done so when there is a chance of running into him. 'Why am I doing this? Did I not say I should pull away before I get hooked? I know I made that decision but. . . .but. . . . I can not do it. Not now. I am already in to deep it seems' With that final thought Yu takes off at full speed and in no time at all he finds himself sitting on the wall surrounding the school grounds. There he takes up a perch in full view of anyone leaving the school through the front gate, where he's always smelled the boy's scent, and waits.

For Ethan, it had been another boring and trying day. He wondered why he still bothered to attend school, honestly. Most of the jobs he could get would not require a high school education, and he already knew most of what was being taught. He was that kid who hardly seemed to pay attention but did well on tests. It was just that the work in half his classes did not interest him. He wound up getting very good grades in the classes he cared about, and scraping Cs in the ones that did not pique his intellect, usually courses involving timed writing, to be honest.

But on this one day, he left the school without anyone following him. His usual tormentors were busy talking with each other, and they were fine with ignoring him. For Ethan's part, he saw no need to change this little reprieve.

He started his usual walk, feeling calm and thinking about the work he wanted to do tonight, when he caught a cat out of the corner of his eye. The feline looked familiar and he paused for a second.

No, I'm just seeing that thing everywhere because of yesterday. This couldn't be that. I still don't even know what happened.

Still as a statue Yu waits, the only movement from him is the occasional twitch of tail or whisker, the winds once more warning him before going back to simply telling him what they day holds in other places around the city. 'All seems calm for now' He stays still even as the bell rings and people come pouring out of the door. His eyes drift over to where several from the evening before gather and begin talking, a few glancing his way before going into some deep discussion. 'I do not thing I like this. . .' the youkai muses, however he does not have long to think about them as within a minute or two, the one he came to see exits the building. His paws flex on the stone beneath his feet, his mouth opening into a small meow that no one is close enough to hear.

'There he is. I wonder if he is well. They were rough on him yesterday. Perhaps I should warn the mean ones off today. . .' Fortunately for both Yu and Ethan, the bullies have already decided to leave the boy alone today, the sigh of the feline sitting on the wall enough to put them on edge. Leaping down to s shorter perch after seeing the youngsters glance at Ethan and for the most part ignore him, Yu waits for the boy to pass, his head tilting this way and that as he waits. When at last Ethan comes into sight however the young man barely spares him a glance before heading on towards his home. His head tilts to the side and stays there, a soft meow once more finding it's way past his lips. 'That is odd. I thought he was curious of me at the very least'

His tails swishes back and forth in thought until at last he nods to himself. 'Perhaps he didn't recognize me. I am a cat after all, and there are real strays in this city' Hopping down from his perch he slinks off after the youth, keeping back and to the side until he senses no one nearby. With a few quick leaps he passes the boy several yards off to the side before leaping on to the path a good ways in front of the youth, sitting down and curling his tail around his feet. His protective nature is still flowing strong, telling him he needs to at the least keep and eye on the young man, and if he can get a little attention out of that, all the better.

Ethan was no fool, and he could not help but keep an eye on the strange little stray cat that looked just like his guardian angel, imaginary friend, protector... youkai... had yesterday. He had hoped he was just seeing things, but as the cat began to follow him home, passing him as he walked down the sidewalk, he could not continue to ignore it.

He stepped up to the animal, and checked all around him to make sure no one would hear him speak, for a part of him was still trying to convince himself that this was just a normal, everyday stray.

“Are you who I think you are? And why are you following me?” he asked blatantly, still feeling more than a little ridiculous for talking to a random stray feline. But then again, people talked to animals all the time, right? He was far more afraid that the little cat would answer, proving that either yesterday was not a dream, or that he was still dreaming somehow.

Tilting his head cutely to the side Yu watches the youth scope out the area before actually addressing him. 'I suppose perhaps, he still thinks himself mad. Well, that will just not do' “If you think me the youkai you met the day previous, then indeed, that is who I am, and if that not be who you thought, then now you know the truth of it.” He smiles his cat smile, letting out a wide yawn. He purrs softly, hopping up on to the back of a nearby bench so he can sit more even with the boy's line of sight. The breed of cat his fashioned after is tall, and long, making Yu almost even with Ethan with the three foot boost of the bench.

Licking his lips he goes on. “As to why am I am following, you seemed to have more questions yesterday and I would like to give you the opportunity to ask them.” He nods his head slightly. “There are some I can answer, and others I can not, however I will tell you truthful wen I can speak no longer on any given subject. I. . .Have not spoken with humans for many a long year so please forgive me if I seem curt, or like now, I ramble a bit, I. . .” A sudden thought strike the youkai. “Would you feel more comfortable if I were in human form? I can appear fully human should I choose, and I know talking to animals on the street may look a little odd.”

Ethan could not help but smile at the adorable way the small cat... youkai turned his head. It made him want to scratch the creature behind the ears. But he resisted the impulse. Either he was crazy and the cat was talking back to him, in which case he would be petting a figment of his imagination, or this was a real youkai, a wise and sentient being, in which case he should not lay a finger on him without his consent.

At the offer to change to a human, Ethan nodded.

“Yeah, if you don't terribly mind. Transforming might help,” he responded, smiling softly.

“As far as my questions, I did some reading on the Internet last night, but it's all speculation. The vast majority think your kind is just a myth, no more real than the Greek gods, although impressive in how they have spanned across cultures under various names. Anyone who thinks otherwise is labeled as a crazy conspiracy theorist, but even on those boards, many think that you just left our world or plane of existence or whatever. Very few really think you are still around,” he explained, meeting the eyes of the cat before him. “So if I have a question, it's more like... what's the truth? What's your side of the story, apart from the myths and misinformation?” the curious human finally asked.

He was not seeing anything else that was strange. No visual or auditory hallucinations. Such insanity did not usually manifest itself with just one image, not to mention an image that seemed so damn real, that he could actually touch. Perhaps... perhaps there was a chance Ethan was not insane, but he would need a strong change to his perspective on the world.

Yu sits quietly, waiting for the boy to finish speaking before transforming, not wanting to interrupt him rudely by the sudden shift. 'He seeks truth, while so many in these days would prefer the beautiful lie. He denies me not, at least with his words, even if his heart has yet to settle' Bowing his hied low to his feet the youkai slowly stretches back until his nose it pointed up to the sky. Reality around the beast seems to bend slightly, like looking through a warped piece of glass, then with a faint shimmer, Yu sits looking completely human on the back of the bench where the cat had been only moments before. His nude form ripples as he stretches, remaining perfectly balanced on his backside while all his limbs reach outwards. As almost an afterthought when his body relaxes once more cloth seems to fly out of nowhere, wrapping around the figure until he is at last clothed in an kimono.

His silver hair gleams in the afternoon sun, the black streaks making it look much like his natural fur. However that is the only sign that he is anything but human, his tail, ears, and claws he normally has are gone, leaving him feeling a little bare, however for the boy's comfort, and his own safety, he will endure. His white skin almost appears otherworldly, however with the advances in human research, the possibility of having that color spliced into a baby is not impossible, though it is not recommended. Skin like Yu's would naturally burn easily, however as he is not human, Yu I safe from such things. Shaking out his hair the youkai shifts a bit until at last hopping off of the bench, catching his balance carefully. It has been a very long time since he's been in human form without his tail, and even before that, a long time since being in human form at all.

His hands fall gracefully back to his sides once his balance is gained and he looks to Ethan with that same warm cat smile, however on a human face it is bound to look different. “You ask a good question, one which, while simply answered, spans far beyond the truth of what I say, and into things both I can not discuss, and things I would rather not. That being said, I will answer what I can.” Walking carefully he stays within earshot of the human while he begins playing with thing with his human hands, the feel of the textures on his flesh far different than on his paws. “The truth of the matter is a sad history that began as wondrous, and peaceful. Youkai once lived along side humans, though not as depicted in films, with each race seen as equal and living in the open.”

He glances at Ethan before going on, poking at a trash bin. “It is not they thought themselves better, nor we better than they, we simply did not take such consideration, and we stayed apart in that even if we were known, as I was in my youth, by the locals, we did not live with, just always just off to the side.” He begins humming softly before going on, trying to think of how to word the next part. “Most. . . Most Youkai were content to live in their own communities, away from human settlements, however some of us were drawn to human, a need to nurture and protect them being a part of us, so it was we, those different from our more wild kindred, that would live and protect humans. Bringing them fortune, finding things that were lost, defending any particular place we consider our own from invading forces.”

Wandering back over to the bench Yu hops up on the back again, sitting with his legs crossed while leaning back to look at the sky. “We were never drawn to the darker sides of human nature, it naturally repelling us. . .However, human nature took a turn one day, and we, being not human, and not understood by humans, were cast under suspicion and cast out and denounced. We fell from our places as protectors, blamed for misfortunes we could not have hopped to stop, and, eventually, it became that we no longer protected humans. Openly or in secret. The risk to us on the whole was too great.” His hand slides up, clutching at his shoulder. Just beneath the tips of his fingers is where his scar begins, and with a soft sigh his eyes fall closed, trying not to think of that day.

Ethan watched the transformation carefully. It was incredible to behold, like a real life, and far more elegant version of something out of a television show. As he gazed at the youkai's new form, he had to resist the temptation to touch his skin. Even in this “human” form, the creature seemed otherworldly. The white skin could be achieved through genetic manipulation, and the silver hair could be had through a combination of genetic manipulation and expensive hair dye, but that knowledge did little to make the cat's appearance seem any more “normal.” Yet, he did not strike the young man as being deformed. In fact, he seemed... beautiful. Ethan could not think of a better word for it.

He listened carefully as the youkai answered his question, unwilling to interrupt.

“So basically, you decided to separate yourselves from humans because many of us were being complete jerks. I can understand that. Hell, I wish I could separate myself from humanity sometimes.” He removed his glasses, wiping them on his shirt. As he put them back on, he noticed the youkai clutching his shoulder. “Is something wrong, are you hurt?” he asked, both concern and curiosity creeping into his voice.

Wrinkling his nose at the crude summery the youth poses for the tale he told, Yu nods softy before shaking his head lightly. “I am fine, it is just a memory. . .” Standing once more he lets out a sigh. “I was a guardian of a village for a long time, seeing generations come and go. I heard of the other youkai pulling away from the humans, however I did not heed the warning, I still could not let the humans be even after hearing of so many of my kind coming under blame. . .Not until it was too late.” As he speaks his hands loosen the top of his kimono, the shoulders falling to the side until at last he turns away from the young man. Flipping his long hair over his shoulder expertly he exposes his back just at the kimono falls down to his hips, exposing most of his scar.

He stands these silently for several seconds before murmuring softly, just loud enough for Ethan to hear. “Not all were as fortunate as I, who at least escaped with my life.” Pulling his kimono back up it seems to naturally fall back into place without Yu needing to fuss over it. He smiles softly at the young man to show his lack of anger towards it all. Though humans have caused much pain, both to him and his people, Yu is too kind to hold it against them. After all, the ones who betrayed them are long dead. “We exist now, in much the same number as we use to, just for the most part hidden away. Though there are still some, like myself, who prefer to keep an eye on humans, doing little things here and there to either aid humans, or to amuse ourselves.”
