Slowly -- but surely -- coming back from a long hiatus.

Better known by the name of Tsu. An "advanced" roleplayer with at least five years of experience on/off. In real life, he is a college student studying in Asia, majoring in design-related fields. Outside of this site, he's also a hopeless poet and an indie writer currently working on his first book (as and when he has the time and inspirations to write something). He is also active in the Harry Potter fandom through participating in fanfic competitions/challenges and building connections with gift fics.

INTP; a Pottermore-certified Slytherin but identifies himself as a Slytherclaw who is both witty and ambitious. Considers himself a Denpa Otaku -- a fan of animanga, visual novels and JRPGs, and he's as opinionated about what he likes and dislikes as every other fan out there.

First attempt at a romance-ish RP. Wish me luck -- and make be sober over how I can only have fictional girlfriends.

Interest Check
< a.k.a. Le RP Ad >

Interest Check (iCheck) isn't a necessity, but it's useful to help the GM to assemble enough players before starting the roleplay proper. You can say that iCheck is something like an advertisement to tickle the curious members lurking around the site to get out of their holes and just join in the fun.

Anyway.

There are already some guides on how to make iChecks, so I won't elaborate too much on that, and focus on the how to present the iCheck in a more visually appealing way. Just ask yourself: would you rather read something with walls of plain, boring text, or something else less strenuous to the human eyes that feels more lively and intriguing?

Here are the basic components to make an attractive Int Check:
  • Images. As the saying goes, "A picture can speak a thousand words."
  • Headers, Horizontal Rules and Indents. This helps to separate the different sections with better clarity, so that players are able to digest the information better.
  • Colors. Hey, try to add some life into the Check, instead of just whitewash against the dark background... Unless you're a monochrome fanatic, which I won't stop you.

The specific sections and info required for Group and 1x1 Checks are different, hence two separate samples. Both are kept as simple as possible without degrading visual appeal so that even coding noobs can achieve similar effect. They are also designed to be mobile-friendly.

(A gentle reminder to do your revision on this post before throwing retarded tantrums at me about why your codes ain't working.)

The samples are in hiders for organization purpose of this guide only - you don't need to put them in hiders for yourself, yeah. To see the coding, simply click on "View Raw" at the top-right corner of this post. Feel free to tweak around to suit your Int Check better.

  • For Group, the design is modeled after a combination of standard blog templates (e.g. WordPress, Tumblr) and magazine article layout.

  • For 1x1, it's modeled after a combination of character sheets and general profile page write-ups.

I think that the Hemingway App is useful as a guide to highlight parts that one might need to reconsider, but like some have said: do not rely on it too much. Different people have different writing styles and flairs, which the program may not be able to pick up well. I put some of my writing into the site, and the result told me my style is too sophisticated and difficult to understand (on average of grade 11 and above). Then when I ran text excerpts of well-known writers - like Tolkien's LOTR - and the guy really love his adverbs. /shrugs

Since this question went unanswered the first time I asked, so let's try again: has anyone tried to use MS Notes? I stopped using it for personal projects and reserve that for school note-taking now; it's quite similar to Evernote.
God I feel so out of place

...I use a spiral note book and a pencil. (With a kick ass green eraser on it)

Don't be, because nothing beats the good ol' fashion way of writing and note-taking, imo. Even though I would use all those tech stuff since I'm alright with them, I still write notes physically by hand in notebooks from time to time.
For all sorts of individual writing purposes, I use Evernote. Totally free, its editor has just enough formatting and the big deal for me is that it has sync capability with every device you have Evernote on. Being able to write on my phone when I'm not home is an amazing feature.

For individual writing on mobile, I use JotterPad, as I have a personal preference for minimalistic interface free of unnecessary distractions (formatting is considered a distraction to me, especially since I major in design-related field and I'm particular about visual appeal) to focus solely on writing down my thoughts. It can be synced via Dropbox, and then I can continue to write using the Windows Notepad because it shares the same .txt file format as JotterPad's notes.

I used to use Evernote in the past, but I had issues with some bugs that couldn't allow me to sync my notes properly, and then my account was one of the unfortunate cases that got hacked during the numerous server incidents which made me less trusting towards Evernote. It's generally a decent app, but my experience with it wasn't great, so I'm not fond of it.

Mozilla Etherpad sounds like a winner too. Half the reason I was asking was because I wanted a collaborative document that I can link to on Trello without having to go through Google.

Of course - it's a public pad that is not much different from Titanpad/PiratePad, except that you can give a name to it as its address for easy recall, an in-built spell checker, and you can even change the font of the text to other font types that are available in the setting tab. (Hang on, why did I sound like a salesperson all of a sudden? Lol.)

A quick question: how many of you here ever tried the MS Office Notes software/app?
An alternative to Titanpad/PiratePad that I use is Mozilla Etherpad, or sometimes when I'm doing more intense collab with RL friends for other projects (largely visual novels, Python coding, and whatnot), we would use the official, downloadable Etherpad freeware. I'm not a fan of Gdoc, due to it's horrible lag on my computers when there are more than 2 people working on the document at the same time. I also avoid Discord for collab projects because we need a way to be able to keep track and look back past discussion points without having to scroll through slowly to squint for them (I know there's the pin thing, but it's not organized enough).

I might give Trello/Asana a shot. From what I've seen on the official sites, looks quite good.

Naoki Lee Yagami.

Unknown_

Naoki couldn't remember how long he was bedridden from the side effect of his Premonition after he had used it on Lihn. Maybe it had been days, or even weeks - it was hard to tell how much time had passed, being locked up in such a place for as long as he could remember. It was the worst case of migraine he had ever gotten so far, and it didn't help that Hwee-Suan came in shortly after he had sent Lihn out of his dream, to intensify his agony with another beating for acting on his own without informing her about the change of plans. He wobbled to his feet, dragging his chained legs towards the table filled with calligraphy materials; on top of the stack of rice papers was the file of 'Vien Phan' he was given sometime ago. He gathered up the resources into the brown envelope, and carried it to his bed before spreading out its contents on the bed sheet.

As he was sorting through the files, the door of his room was suddenly blasted open, and Shui Xian stormed through the scattered calligraphy papers on the ground towards the boy. "You. Come here, now."

Naoki frowned at her. What did the Spirit of Water want with him? He knew she had never liked him ever since he was forced to take over his mother as the new figure of the Yin symbol. However, he wasn't given much time to contemplate her unannounced appearance as Shui Xian pulled him off the bed roughly, with her vice-like grip choking around his neck.

"Release him," the lady ordered the two bodyguards, loyal servants to Polaris, and they marched forward, freeing Naoki's limbs from the chains that had locked his freedom with the despicable cult all these years.

Naoki was too surprised to even move, even after the metal cuffs fell off his wrists and ankles with a noisy clang. "...What's the meaning of this?"

The confused look on the boy's face made the Water Spirit roll her eyes at him. "Let's just say that the tide is turning... and you are the trump card that'd determine the outcome of this war. You should know this better than anyone else."

Naoki continued to watch Shui Xian with narrowed eyes. Even if she was probably after his power like Hwee-Suan did, that didn't explain her true motive for doing so. An ominous feeling that something big - and bad - was happening. However... "What exactly is going on? Where are you taking me?"

"Oh, be quiet, brat," Shui Xian snapped to shut Naoki up. "You're useless with just you alone. I'm actually doing you a great service to at least let you pay your oh-so-loving parents a visit. Of course, this favor would not come cheap." She cupped a hand beneath Naoki's chin, to tilt his head up so that they were both looking at each other in the eye. "So, are you coming with me, or not?"

The staring contest seemed to go on for ages as the silence stretched on. Finally, Naoki dropped his gaze with resignation. "...We have a deal. Let's go."

Reiji and Yui were both surprised when Naoki suddenly showed up before them, but even more when they noticed the person who brought their son here. Yui gritted her teeth and was about to lunge after Shui Xian... when her husband stopped her with an outstretched arm across her chest and shook his head.

"Always the cool-headed one, huh," Shui Xian commented, not bothering to hide the sarcasm in her voice. "That amount of self-control, coupled with the level of your mind control power, is what make everyone who knows what you're capable of fear you." She snorted at the Yagami family, before she signaled her guards to unlock the cell door.

The Yagami couple exchanged looks with each other; Reiji was the first to speak up, "...Why are you helping us? What do you want from us?"

"I think you know," Shui Xian replied with a curt tone, giving the scarred man a piercing look. "Even with your powers sealed away, I highly doubt that it has much effect at all to your acute insight into things you shouldn't know about."

Reiji opened his mouth; before he could say a word, Yui had chimed in, "Oh, please. Save us all the ridiculous riddle talks. That old hag won't let you off so easily if she finds you here." She refused to call Hwee-Suan her mother. No, she never had a woman like that as a parent.

Rolling her eyes, Shui Xian scoffed, "I could say the same for you all. If it wasn't for the powers you three possess, you'd be dead long ago and not here, trying to be smart with me." Her guards removed the cuffs around the couple's limbs, but they left the suppressant collar as they were around their neck. "If you've got so much time to waste, how about spending it on getting out, now?"

As the guards dragged the Reiji out of the cell, the man resisted, before he jerked his chin to a woman unconscious on the ground. "...Wait. Take her with us, too."

"Excuse me?" Shui Xian was getting very impatient with how carefree the Yagamis were even when they were in an urgent situation.

"She can be... useful," Reiji said, unfazed at the Water Spirit's anger towards him. "She works for the Japanese government... Asami Takashiro."

The name made Shui Xian froze, glaring at him with such intensity that her eyes seemed to be burning into his very being. "Did you just say 'Takashiro'?" She narrowed her eyes at the still figure lying on the floor, and bent down to flip her over. The lady's face was gaunt, as if life force was slowly being sapped away from her, and her breathing was rasp, almost like she was having a painful nightmare. There was something awfully familiar about this woman's face and her name, but she couldn't quite recall just exactly who... yet.

...Whatever. She could save the questions after all of them were out of this place. "Very well." She gestured at one of the guards to carry Asami on his back. Naoki stepped forward to steady Yui with his father, and the odd group finally moved out of the cell.

Meanwhile...

Somewhere deep in the Polaris' base, someone was indeed watching their every move on the screens that filled up the walls in a control room of sorts. A man who appeared to be in his fifties, in a well-ironed pinstripe suit. He smacked his lips as his unblinking eyes fixated on the figures leaving the cell room where the cult had kept the Yagami couple.

Pressing a button on the dashboard, he drawled into the mic with a scratchy voice, "Oh, Hwee-Suan, it is finally happening."
