The reason he did that. The person there closest to matching his sheer physical capabilities was Sage-UHG, and everyone else could certainly fight him, but gridlock/stalemate would be the only result.

If it wasn't instantaneous, then it would have only ha the effect of either slowing the rate at which he was destroying it or bringing it to a near halt.

Well, they could have done it instantaneously, especially since Ruby was harmonised, so she had access to more of her power. Either that or they could have slowed it to a near halt as they prepared to instantaneously revert it. Either is logical within the confines of the characters and the admittedly vague statement I wrote.
