Paulina Benson

It took some time, but eventually Paulina was able to make it to her room. She knew from prior experience that whenever her friend was taxed too much, the best thing was for her to just sleep it off. The entire way, Paulina kept talking in the same low, soothing voice.

”I… I took it off…”

”I know, I saw you. It was a very brave thing to do.”

"Its...it doesn't dull my effect on others, enough..."

”It’s okay, we’ll make it stronger, I promise. Nobody got hurt, everything will be fine. You just rest.” Using her elbow to open the door, Paulina slipped into her dorm room and gently laid her friend on her bed. ”We can talk about it when you're feeling up to it, okay?”

"Liam is scared....It's my fault, whatever I did with Alister...."

Crawling onto the bed and laying down beside Ashleigh, Paulina smiled and tucked the empath’s head against her chest, softly brushing her hair with her fingers. ”No, Ash, it wasn't your fault. It was just an accident, we'll figure it out. Besides, Liam’s a big boy, I'm sure he can handle whatever is going on. First you need to recover, alright? Then we'll get everything sorted out. “

Internally, Paulina was already trying to puzzle through what happened. Something had set her sensitive friend off, something sudden that had caught her by surprise. The telekinetic wave had obviously been an instinctive attempt to defend herself from whatever “it” was. Right after that was when Liam told everybody to leave, which meant that Ashleigh’s “push” must have also disturbed the ghosts that she had seen while she had been in Liam’s body.

"Alister....must talk to..."

”Shh. We'll talk to him after you've rested a bit,” she murmured. The triggerpoint, however, had been Alister. He'd been the one who had shouted first. Whatever had happened to him, Ashleigh must have felt it. So the question then was, what had set Alister off? She hadn't been paying much attention to what he had been doing in the class, so it was difficult to say. Whatever the case, they were definitely going to have to have another talk.

It could happen later, however. Right now, she had higher prior-

”Ashleigh, Paulina, Jason, Vedica, and whoever else this may concern. This is Alister. Meet myself and Liam for dinner in the kitchen down the hall. Room 34-A. It's an urgent matter please be present ASAP. Thank you"

Glancing up at the ceiling, Paulina frowned. What the hell is he doing? Did he sneak into the office? He should be resting as well! At this rate, he was going to hurt himself even further, however he managed to do it the first time. And what do him and Liam want to talk about?

”Paulina…”

Blinking, she looked down at Ashleigh, the girl's face looking surprisingly concerned. "Please, let's go to this meeting. I need to know what I did, please. I need to know if it was because I took the bracelet off, or how I diffused Alister's pain. Please, Paulina. Let me go kitchen."

The request made Paulina’s frown deepen. ”Are you sure? That class took a lot out of you. I'm sure we could figure out some way of participating remotely.” The scientist in Paulina very much did want to go, if only for the opportunity to question Alister about what had happened. But she was a friend first and foremost; magical science would always be secondary to that.

Ashleigh knew that Paulina meant well. She shook her head and said "No, you know as well as I that I need to be there in person. My nerves maybe shot, but I can withstand their emotions so long as I don't touch them. And they don't go bat crap crazy" Although she wasn't too sure about that, she knew she was better being there. "Doing it at a distant might be better for me, but it won't help to figure out what happened. Maybe if I'm close to Aliaster, to Liam, we can figure it out" She looked up at Paulina and gave a sigh.

Shifting, she stood up shakily, but appeared to hold herself up. She didn't sway, thankfully. But she shook. "You can't increase the bracelet anymore. As it is, it afects my body's ability to heal itself. It makes me jones, Paulina. Just enough that I contemplating taking a pill or two. I'm weak. You can't make it any stronger. I need it" She was well aware that that was a type of addiction, but she didn't care. She knew that she was lucky to have her healing ability, that without it, she'd be somewhere in a pit of despire, full of drugs and doing goodness knew what.

Ashleigh ran a hand through her hair, weary. "I can do this, Paulina. Really. If I even look like freaking, you can drag me out. But I need to do this" She looked to Paulina, "Please, help me. My legs are shaking"

"Vedika, this is gonna sound weird but your injury isn't physical." Jason started cautiously. "I think whatever Ashleigh accidentally did to us, affected you differently. I think it's caused your subconscious to do this to you." He finished, praying he didn't sound like a nut.

Vedika narrowed her eyes a bit. "I said it wasn't Ash!" Vedika defended, more vehemently than she had intended, "It might have been that other boy." @KiritoAsuna

Vedika didn't realize the contradiction in saying that it might be Alister but not Ashleigh. She had nothing concrete to base her statement on, only a desire to not want Ashleigh to suffer the guilt. Thinking back she remembered feeling something off just moments prior to Alister screaming and the explosion. It had to do with Liam and Paulina, but she wasn't sure what. @Themerlinhawk @Thundercrash

"But you're probably right in that it's not physical," Vedika acquiesced. "What do you suggest?"

Because they were in the infirmary and not their dorm rooms, Vedika and Jason wouldn't hear Alister's PA announcement.

In a heartbeat, Paulina was up and half-hugging, half-supporting Ashleigh. ”You are not weak, Ash,” she murmured into her ear, ”You’re one of the strongest people I know.” Drawing away a little to look at her face, Paulina smiled warmly and proudly. ”Certainly stronger than me.”

It was true. While Paulina couldn’t know what it was like to be in her friend’s shoes, to feel all the varied and constantly changing emotions of everyone around, she likened it to being in a crowded room with everyone shouting at the top of their lungs at once. In comparison, going blind didn’t seem too bad. The fact that Ashleigh even got out of bed each day was amazing, and it was that strength and bravery that inspired her to keep trying with her own project. And it was that reason why, if Ashleigh were to ever ask her of anything, and Paulina thought it would help, she couldn’t say no.

She shifted around so that she was under Ashleigh’s arm, ready to support as much weight as her friend needed. ”If you’re sure that you want to do this, then okay. I’ll be right beside you if it becomes too much.” Smiling warmly, Paulina kissed her friend on the cheek. ”And Ash? I am really proud of you, for trying to help Alister,” she said, making no effort to hide that pride and admiration.

The pair slowly made their way towards the kitchen, waving at the pair of boys who were waiting for them as Paulina helped Ashleigh into a chair. ”Well, we’re here boys. I think I can guess most of what happened, but let’s hear it from you.”

"Calm down vedika, I'm not blaming her." Jason started defensively. But then he realized that even he thought it sounded like he was blaming her. He had started talking objectively rather than subjectively. Yeah that came out wrong. "At least, I didn't mean to..." He replied guiltily. "Look what I meant to say is it had to do with ash, her mental powers. I can't tell you how to fix this, because I'm not entirely sure what's going on with you. Jason harshly racked his brain for a solution, he had never seen anything like this. Then a light went off somewhere in Jason's head.

"Hey I got it! Try meditating like you were earlier. 'Search your feelings luke'." He laughed. "Sorry about that but seriously, maybe then you can see what's wrong and fix it yourself." He finished

Liam set dinner on the table in front of the small gathered group. “Are you the only ones who are coming.” The young man’s earlier mildly pleased demeanor was gone and in its place was worry lines and a tired expression. Dinner had turned out to be mildly therapeutic as it had allowed him to put away his fears and focus on something mundane. The dinner ended up being a whole lot simpler than he normally cooked: Beef stroganov and steamed vegetables. Settling into the chair across from the two girls he set a mug on the table in front of him. Liam would get to the food eventually but for now he simply ran his finger around the lip of the black ceramic mug; the front of which featured a papyrus motify. It was an image from the egyptian book of the dead, when he was younger he’d been obsessed with egyptian ancient history.

“Might as well start eating. I was hoping perhaps we’d see more but if it's just the four of us this might be easier to explain.” Looking over Paulina’s shoulder he pursed his lips. Arty ghosted by behind her a very determined look on his face. Hopefully he was alright after this afternoon but the spirits around the Academy had been incredibly sour all day. Taking a long sip from the mug he continued to peer down the hallway lost in thought. Mostly it was about the afternoon but occasionally his thoughts wandered towards his family and everything that had led up to this. Keeping his face carefully schooled he did his best to try and do the same with his emotions. It had been incredibly apparent just how sensitive Ashleigh was to others feelings and it was the least he could do to help her out.

Alister sat there waiting for Liam to explain his story. He looked over to ashleigh but lowered his head unsure what to say. Than his eyes turned to Paulina. he knew somehow that she would have blamed him.

This whole situation had been weird but he didn't really know what to say. He was nervous and worried about everyone's emotions, but being an empath himself he knew how to hide his emotions. Alister started eating and sort of just sat there waiting for someone to talk. He wasn't sure what the girls wanted to know. Not to mention he himself didn't really know what it was that Liam had to say. @Themerlinhawk@Thundercrash@Caits

"And that's your fault. You keep on trying to get me out, and now look, I'm stuck helping people" Ashleigh said, yet her tone was joking, and she leaned quite companionable against Paulina as she helped her out. She was more then grateful for the chair when they get there, and she sat there a moment, resting her elbows on the table and her head in her hands, breathing in and out slowly. She sighed heavily, leaning back after a moment, glancing at them all.

"I can feel you trying not to feel, Liam. You don't need to dull yourself for my sake. I'm okay" She said, deciding she might as well start this meeting, as it seemed that no one else was going to. She looked over to Aliaster, but he certainly seemed much better off then she herself did. Just what were the differences to their abilities? She tilted her head, thoughtful. She figured she was stronger, given that it was whatever she did that caused all this...

"I don't know what I did. All I sought to do was sooth away the pain so it wouldn't effect me. Touch works better with my abilities, in focusing on one person. It makes my abilities stronger as well. I don't know whether it was because we share some similar abilities or what, but...It was like...like we were just bouncing the pain back and forth like a game of pong, or tennis. And that just made everything worse." She was frustrated, because she couldn't figure out just what happened, no matter how many times she played it through her head. She shifted nervously, closing her eyes. that's not mine. She wasn't sure of much, but she knew her own emotions.

She drew in a deep breathh, not particulary hungry. Eating would just take too much energy right then. "How do you not lose control, Aliaster? How does it not become too much for you? My bracelet's pretty damn strong, and every day its a constant struggle to not send things flying like I did in the gym. To not send people crazy with emotions that aren't theirs" She shifted back in the chair, pulling her knees up, balancing on the chair and wrapping her arms around them.

"I don't want to screw things up anymore then I already have, and I can't have the bracelet changed, for reasons I don't want to say. What did I do, Liam?" She asked softly, desperately, wanting to know. She'd spoken more then she had meant to, but once she had gotten started, she just couldn't stop. Yet she remained steady, at least for the time beaing.

Vedika accepted Jason's attempts to mitigate blame on Ashleigh. "It's worth a shot," Vedika said slowly getting into a sitting position. Vedika was surprised to notice that Jason was right, something was weird. Her aura felt much smaller, tighter. "It feels like a knot," she said vaguely. She tried to expand her aura like she did during training, only this time, it was to expand it just to the limits of her body rather than outside of it. It was hard, and required more concentration, but doable. She felt a tingling sensation as feeling returned, but a sudden, disgusting, under-the-skin sensation came all over her body, forcing her aura to retract again. Though her face was stoic and her eyes closed, a wince appeared momentarily and she experienced a minor gag reflex.

What was that sensation? she thought to herself, her mind wandered back to Liam and Paulina again. "I could feel for a second, but something forced me back," Vedika said, probably being not at all helpful to Jason's attempts to investigate.

Damn this is gonna be harder than I thought. Jason pushed his mind to the limit, however all the time in the world wasn't making it any easier to figure out. It has to be some kind of defense mechanism. Going back to the root of the problem, it had seemed that Ashleigh hasn't directly done anything, but rather had tried to dissipate whatever negative energy or pain, had plagued Allister. Her subconscious is attempting to, or at least was attempting to protect her from whatever Had been released from Allister. So she's gotta stop the defensive mechanism, possibly by tricking or suggesting, directly to her subconscious. And the only way to do that is... A light once again flashed within Jason's mind.

"Vedika, I got it!" Jason said with excitement. "I know this is gonna sound strange, but you're going to have to let me hypnotize you." Jason knew how crazy it sounded, most people weren't aware of the fact that hypnosis was actually very possible, and not just Hollywood crap.

Alister cracker his neck and smiled looking at ashleigh happily. "all it really takes is control and focus. For me it's a little easier but if you want I can help" Alisters motives and words we're sincere and he allowed his emotions to show it. He wanted to help Ashleigh out. All he does is hide in the shadows and now he had a real chance to show he was helpful to people other than liam and paulina, who we're the only people who really talked to him before this year.

"Ashleigh I really can help you." alister said with a smile reaching across the table to touch her shoulder. "whenever you need some advice or want help just let me know" Alister smiled and sat back in his seat. @Caits

Looking over to Liam he narrowed his eyes a little and his voice grew much more stern than the light tone he had with Ashleigh. "Liam what happened in that Gym after we all left . What happened? Was it Noah? What the fuck did he say to you that through you off so bad I could feel your fear from the damn infirmary? alister staired at Liam with a hard yet concerned look. Truthfully he wanted to know because he wanted to help, but he needed to get the point across that this is important and a matter of urgency. The fear and distraught that he saw in Liam was no joking matter. Something serious was coming and none of them we're ready for it.

Alister turned back to his food and let out a sigh as he began to eat in silence for a small moment. The night was getting cold and he was getting irritated that they had not done anything to fix what was wrong. Alisters emotions lost control as he slammed his hands onto the table "damnit liam what the hell happened back there. Tell me the whole story or so help me I will pull it out of you!!!! " Alister screamed in fury before realizing what he had just done. Alisters body relaxed and he slowly sat down feeling sad about his misdirected anger. "I'm sorry everyone. Especially to you ashleigh. I must have just flooded your mind for a moment there. I apologize.... It's just that.... I'm just so angry"

Alister was so tired of waiting all this time. Even though he was able to conceal his own emotions pretty well he was very much afraid deep down inside he, like everyone else knew nothing and wanted only answers. Sitting quietly he waited for somebody to say something.

Ashleigh flinched at the violatile emotions, almost falling off the chair. She went pale, so much so that she almost went transulcant. She shook, swallowing and closed her eyes tight. Not now. Not again. Not here. She huddled on the chair, reaching straight for Paulina, to touch her, to wash Paulina's emotions over her own, over Alister's fury. Her free hand she clenched, digging her fingernails into her palm, Drawing blood, the cuts healed over within seconds, yet a couple of drops still fell to the floor. Her breathing was fast, as she drew it in and out, trying desperately to focus on that.

"It's...okay" She managed to get out, although it wasn't, an inner war raging inside of her. And then, for the briefest of moments, she seemed to regain a sembalance of control. And then it fell apart again, and she shuddered. She was losing control. She could feel it, slipping through her fingers like water.

She was going to lose control. Going to hurt people again. Going to do whatever she'd done earlier that day to the spirit realm. She couldn't let that happen. She couldn't screw up anymore then she already had, but she just couldn't control it. She was weak. She was so weak. Paulina said she was strong, but this showed just how weak she was. She curled tighter against herself, making herself, almost, into a ball. She didn't want to be weak. She didn't want to hurt people.

So why couldn't she gain control of this inner turmoil? It was like opposing forces, trying to rip her apart. Trying to make her explode forth a spew of damaging emotions. "NO!" The cry ripped through her throat, exploding out, but there were no emotions accompanied with it. She wasn't sure what happened. It was almost....like...the emotions just disappeared. All at once, she was okay.

She let out a slow, long breath, and uncurled, still shaking slightly. She looked away from everyone, ashamed.

Looking up from his picked over plate Liam considered the question for a long moment. It wasn't like she done it on purpose although it seemed to confirm a few suspicions he had regarding the spirit world. It was now quite clear that it was keyed into emotions. Perhaps it was even where the emotions someone left behind when they died ended up. That would certainly make a lot of sense but it still left other questions. With Alister’s outburst Liam gave him a rather dead look, anything Alister could bring against him was nothing more than the lap of waves against a shore in comparison to the tsunami was Liam was concerned by.

“I suspect what happened was more akin to an echo. I get the feeling that Alister amplified an emotion and then when you took it and dumped it, the pain somehow ended up in the spirit world. Normally I don't think that would really have mattered but unfortunately while Paulina and I were body swapping I gave off the spiritual equivalent of a flare in the middle of a dark night. So when the pain was sent into the spirit world it hit A lot of ghosts...

Trailing off Liam went back to picking at his food well aware that Alister, Ashleigh and probably even Paulina could probably tell that he wasn’t saying something it didn't matter. Looking at Ashleigh after her yelp the young man frowned for a long moment before he closed his eyes and emptied himself as though he was preparing for a possession. Reaching across the table he offered his hand to her. Pushing all of his emotions into a tiny little ball he veiled them carefully so that they felt like the sun behind a cloud in the barren waste of his internal state. As emotionless as he could get he offered the quite to Ashleigh with his hand. It was clear she was using Paulina to overwrite her emotions every time she touched Paulina.

“It wasn’t Noah that is the problem. There are other things in the spirit world beyond just human spirits and remnant emotions. I’ve been calling them Outsiders for years. I have idea what they actually are but they are old and powerful.” With a calming sigh Liam continued “I’ve been possessed by one of them, it styled itself as a demon and it certainly acted like one. I almost burned my family alive because of it. Its why I wear a psychic inhibitor and why I’m here. The problem is I think after what happened today the Outsider has found us and I’m concerned because it appears capable of destroying other spirits. I don’t want to drag you three into it but I don’t think there is any way to extricate you. We set off a massive bomb in the spirit world and it sent up one hell of a flare; which is why I think we may be dealing with a class five spirit very soon.”

With that Liam fell silent and let them take in what he had said. Tonight was going to be rough for everyone.

The sharp glare that Paulina sent Alister's way said volumes of how she felt about his outburst, and she laid a protective arm around Ashleigh's shoulder. That arm tightened in response to her friend's increasing distress, and when she made her own sudden exclamation Paulina shifted her chair over and pulled the girl's head to her shoulder, stroking her hair reassuringly. ”Shh, you’re okay. You’re alright,” she murmured, before turning her attention back to Liam.

His revelation about the Outsiders was of particular interest to her. The name itself implied that they possessed a quality suggesting that they came from "elsewhere" for lack of a better term; that whatever they were, they were quite alien to everything else. The fact that they could possess people was particularly concerning. However, there was one point that she needed clarified. "Everything you said up until the Outsiders bit, I kinda figured was the case. An accident that snowballed. Okay, moving on. Quick question about these Outsider thingies: can they possess anyone, or do you think it happened just because of your powers?" She'd file away the comment about his family for another time.

"Haha, funny..." Vedika said, suddenly very uncomfortable and trying to pass it off as humor. The thought of relinquishing control of her body made her squeamish. "Anyways, I feel better already." Vedika made to get off the bed, trying to hide the intense focus that was necessary to move normally when her whole body was numb. She felt that she was maybe able to pass off as 'cured', and to exude confidence, said, "See? Nothing to it. All better." Vedika had absolutely no desire to be hypnotized. She looked at Jason, somehow sure she had failed to trick him.

Yikes that sounded just as creepy as I thought it would. Jason mentally kicked himself. Her all to obvious attempts to pretend she was cured told Jason all he needed to know. But on the other hand, it's probably better if he let her take care of this herself. After all Jason could only do so much, he simply wasn't vedika.

"Alright then, glad you're better." Jason said with false belief. He wanted to find out what had happened in the gym. "I'm gonna go after Allister, this whole mess has me curious out of my mind." Without another word Jason darted out into the hallway. Allister obviously was long gone. Allister must have headed to the gym, that's where Liam was. When he burst through the gym doors only the instructor from earlier was inside.

"Excuse me." Jason started "Have you seen Allister and Liam?

"No, they left ages ago, without cleaning up the mess you all made!" The burly man said angrily. "Just get outta here, someone called for you and the injured girl, said something about meeting em at the kitchens."

"Thanks!" Jason said as he jogged back towards the exit. "Sorry about the mess!" He added as he exited. It didn't take him long to get back to the infirmary. Vedika obviously hasn't gone anywhere despite her apparent 'curedness' "Hey vedika, apparently me and you are supposed to be at the kitchens. Do you need me to carry you? he asked with a raised eyebrow. He didn't want to be a jerk, and leave her behind, or make her try to keep up with him in her current state. @stern algorithm

Liam made eye contact with Paulina. “I honestly don't know. I'd imagine that the answer is anyone. Although that being said I should think it would require some sort of stressor or situation that causes the person to give up and allow the Outsider inside.” The implications about Liam's past were blatant but he didn't address them. “To be fair I really don't know much about Outsiders other than that they appear to be an order of magnitude more power than the average spirits. They also appear to be able to influence the physical world more substantially and they usually play by certain rules.”

Liam finally stood and picked up his dishes. He'd barely noticed Ashleigh and Alister’s exchange. It was a minor thing in comparison to the things they had to deal with. “I need to start preparing for war. There are spirits here that will side with the Outsider out of fear or malice. We need to remove it's pawns otherwise we won't be able to fight back effectively.” With a heavy sigh Liam leaned over the sink and just stared into the pool of dirty dish water. What had he done?

When Jason returned, Vedika was already on her feet. In the time he was gone, she had been trying to get herself used to this new sensation, or lack thereof. She had even walked around the infirmary a bit. As terrifying as this all should have been, Vedika was a little excited. She was experiencing a heightened state of awareness due to needing all her other senses to make up for her lack of touch, and this state gave her a bit of a rush. But like a caffeine rush or an adrenaline rush, she wouldn't be able to maintain this state for an extended period of time because her mind would get tired. Vedika was not aware of this however, and did a bit of shadow boxing to demonstrate just how much she had gotten used to her situation. "As much as I'd like to be carried, I don't think that will be necessary," she grinned at Jason, "lead the way!"

Allowing Paulina's emotions to wash over her, Ashleigh listened to what was being said. None of it made her feel better. She swallowed. So it was her fault. it didn't matter that it was indirect, it had been her fault. "So in other words I can't neutralise emotions without screwing up the spiritaul world and ticking off a bunch of ghosts. Which makes me a ticking timebomb to explode, tick off the ghosts, screw up the spirit realm and utterly mess things up? Wonderful" She was furious and she moved away from paulina, so she wouldn't infect the girl with her anger.

She shook her head, clenching her hands into fists, this time she didn't break her skin with her nails. She knew she was being irrational. And that the anger was just building and building. She was tired of messing things up. Of not being strong enough. "I'm sorry. I should get myself worked up. But why? Why did...what I did trigger it?" She asked, sounding defeated, and looking away from them all.

"And will I be able to...affect this outsider?"

Jason chuckled."Alright then lots get outta here." Jason said excitedly. He was glad to leave the infamy again, the room was freezing. He wondered why doctors offices were always so cold. As they walked to the kitchens Jason wondered about the events that had occurred. This whole incident seems to have taken a toll on everyone. I think I'm gonna sneak out tonight, get some fresh air. Jason began to wonder if forcing all these kids with powers and abilities into one school was such a good idea. Sure it made for a better social environment, but it seemed that their abilities didn't always mix well. They were relatively close to the kitchens, he turned to vedika.

"So What's your take in this Vedika? What exactly do you think happened back there?" He asked while glancing around the room.@stern algorithm
