Can be yours or someone else's.

Who was this character? What made them so interesting/fun to write/compelling? How did they impact the RP they were in?

I just want to hear some stories. Drop 'em on me!

There were really only two characters I actually fell in love with. Both of them were Japanese characters. Both of the role-plays were kind of rabid fire, but one role-play had more lengthy posts than the other. It caused us to stay up late, reply as fast as we could, etc.

One of them was about a Vampire who fell in love with a teenage girl (of age). The other was about a rich teenage male (of age). He had one of those "jerks" with a heart of gold. The other wasn't as much.

It was interesting to play the rich life and watch the rich guy fall in love with a girl that was-...she wasn't exactly poor (but of age). But definitely not his class. Neither characters were afraid to go after what they wanted and they'd immediately step in when someone tried to interfere.

The girl who wrote the one about the rich was brilliant at leaving cliffhangers at the end of her posts. Something I caught on to. This role-play got pretty intense and then became a Yakuza role-play. There were so many interesting characters and love stories that intertwined with one another. It was one of my favorite role-plays ever written to the point I would read it once a year.

Both were amazing at allowing their characters' body language and choice of words to convey the situation as well as write actions that move the role-play forward.

I don't know how much I should give away.

Because I stated they were teenagers, I wanted to assure people they were of age. Didn't want anyone to get the wrong impression.

Oh, cool, I like threads like these. Bit of an issue on my end though- I don't so much have a "favorite character" as much as I do a spectrum of stuff I liked about some of my past characters. I'm not gonna say all of them were ace-in-the-holes, though- while I don't tend to forget anything I've made, I'd be lying if I said I actively thought about most of them. Still, there's some I regularly come back to think about, both that I've mentioned in previous discussion threads and not, so why don't I discuss each of them here? I'll even link to their sheets, despite my better judgement. I'm not exactly proud of... any... of my past writing, but at least people get something to dunk on while also understanding the context a little better.

My favourite character to write was Raelynn in an Elder Scrolls roleplay, by far.

Raelynn, first and foremost, made me a stronger writer. She was perhaps entirely more flawed than she was good, I don't think she often did what a character "should" do, and in fact a lot of her actions and decisions ruined a lot of things.

She had moments of great doubt, she was often ruled by spite and pride but every so often capable of showing incredible compassion, but only when she decided to give that. She was never talked into a decision.

I loved exploring this beautiful, but completely tragic character.

So I have a couple of old faves, some I still use, some I do not, and one character that I have DNR notice on because I liked the arc of their story so much I never want to fuck around with it again. So...

  • Karliege/Kassian/Karlus (I change his name a lot if you haven't noticed) is probably one of my favourite characters to write as, earning him at least 4 or maybe 5 different incarnations over 11 years of RPing right the way from his first appearance in 2009 or 2010 on oldguild, to literally right now because I am currently playing him in an RP on this site. Stuff changes every time I use him, but his core shtick is that he's always a somewhat scarred and traumatised mage who has only made his situation worse through his own actions, normally meaning he has made some kind of terrible eldritch pact with a being beyond his comprehension. He also showed up as an NPC in a pen and paper D&D game I once ran, I have plans for short stories involving him, hell maybe even a novel one day if I get my act together. I really like writing as him because he's always intelligent and sensitive, but completely misguided in what he's trying to do, and often oblivious to the fact he's playing with fire and headed down a horrible, horrible path. He's a good person, with good intentions that ends up doing something terrible.

  • Sarcen is probably the character I have the most incarnations of, around 7 or 8, although they all existed on oldguild except for one which was more of an NPC really. This character was primarily a way to explore the other side of eldritch bargains as they were always a demon of some sort bound to someone else that the character normally despised and would do everything in their power to sabotage and drive to despair. Kinda like a malicious genie or a sentient monkey paw. Me and a friend used this dynamic in numerous oldguild RPs. Getting them to actually be useful normally meant tempting them with something they wanted, which would normally be something horrific. I did things with this character that broke site content rules on numerous occasions, ultimately resulting in a whole thread delete by mods for a 1x1 I did with said friend above. As a responsible and relatively mature adult now, I am very glad that stuff is no longer on the internet. I kinda outgrew the character as I'm not a 15 year old edgelord anymore, but I still feel tempted to use them as an NPC or side antagonist sometimes because the character loomed so large in my early RPing.

  • Rolnak, a character I only played once and will never resurrect. The angriest of boys, his arc of slowly succumbing to a degenerative brain disease was fulfilled over the course of 3 years in the same group RP. He died before guildfall so most of the posts are all gone (I still have some saved), but he's still the only character I brought to a satisfying conclusion. I tried to continue that RP afterwards with a different character, but it didn't feel right. Then guildfall happened, we lost pretty much everything, I lost interest and bowed out, and that RP (Feral for those interested) limped along for another two years. It lasted 5 years, the original DM dropping out, and the entire site being burned to the ground. Anyway, Rest in Peace buddy, still miss you.

I have a load of other characters I really like, and have played on multiple occasions, but these are the ones that really stand out to me.

God lord, after doing this for more than a quarter of a century there is no way I could pick one or even two. I might be able to pick out a top 10 for each type of RP. Having said that, out of my currently active Rp characters I would have to say that Océane is my favorite. She had the cliched back story of orphaned at a young age, taken in by horrible people, abused, and so forth. Put in a position to run away, try to free herself, then get mixed up in a Mail Order Bride scenario and paired up with what some would call a "Bad Bad Man." What I love about her though is her innocence despite everything. She is a Pollyanna that delights in the most basic of what life has, what many take for granted. She teeters between that and then completely pulling herself in fear striking through her when something happens that startles or she thinks could lead to harm. Cowering as it were. Seeing her develop, ever so slowly, has been a wonder. (It took months for her to ask for paper to cover a hole in her boot) Excited to see where she goes as she is not the typical 'strong assured' woman that I normally gravitate towards rping.

It's not often that I brag about my own accomplishments.low self esteem gang what upBut I'm gonna break character here and say that Gharekh, in just three posts (long ones, but still), is already the cruelest, most insidious, just, source of pure fuckin' evil that I've written to date. Dunno how long it'll last because being an asshole in RP is hard for anybody in the long-term, and because full-blooded sociopaths make for lame rp, but I just finished his "prologue" of sorts and I can't believe how conniving he turned out to be when he's playing with his food.

Please read the posts, I'm gonna be so proud of them for about two more weeks before I go back to hating myself and everything I produce

OK, with that outta the way another person's character who instantly came to mind for me is a peasant girl named Robyn, who was played waaaaaay back in the days of World 41 on RuneScape actually having players, including roleplayers. She's significant to me because I was roleplaying as a warlord/emperor at the time, and my most trustworthy buddy was roleplaying as my spymaster, and my other buddy was rping a bodyguard, and there were tons of knights/sergeants-at-arms, and an incredibly wealthy arms merchant, and my other character was one of the world's most notorious mercenary captains (think Gotz von Berlichingen) and ... in walks this absolute nobody peasant girl, signing up to be a scullery maid in the castle kitchens.

What the fuck was she thinking? That she could be near the story without actually involving herself in it? That's what I thought at first, accepting her purely for the novelty factor, with maybe a good splash of pity thrown in. Not like she could hurt the rp by being so insignificant, so may as well hand out an easy acceptance so everyone feels better, right?

This in itself is already hugely significant for me. In retrospect she had the balls to compete with all these big names and pretty faces in this dynamic story about childish medieval politicking and backstabbing ... as a maid. She had the sheer bravado, swinging between her lady legs, to walk in there and think that her character could compete with ours for spotlight time. And she was also

dead.

Fucking.

Right.

She handled other characters' abuse (often not even intended, they just got arrogant af when the fictional power went to their heads) ultra gracefully as a player, writing out Robyn's little frustrations, her unfulfilled fantasies of revenge, her rivalries with older castle ladies envious of her youth and vitality. She got into horribly awkward shenanigans when she got pressured into agreeing to help babysit a brat prince or two. Through sheer fucking wisdom and force of personality, she became confidant to king and queen and actually mediated their fucking marriage once or twice, and not ONCE did it feel hamfisted or cringey the way someone like Marisha on Critical Role feels cringey when she's obviously trying way too hard to be deep. Robyn hinted to a mercenary in my crew that she wouldn't mind being swept off her feet and going on adventures with him, because kitchen life absolutely blew chunks and she wasn't moving up the ladder like she had hoped, only to have to roleplay having her heart being broken when he either didn't get the hints or didn't reciprocate, fucking somehow. Robyn actively deserved something good to happen to her for making the story objectively better and being a nice person IC but it never happened for purely organic reasons. (Not at all like when a character is specifically designed to be betrayed, shafted, mocked, hurt, and otherwise dumped on, which is when their misfortune feels forced and lazy.) Robyn eventually got framed for something that objectively wasn't really her fault, too. It was a complete accident and she's the one who ended up taking the fall, and the player FUCKING ACCEPTED IT. I was so mad. I was basically kicking out the best roleplayer in the rp for entirely IC reasons. But none of us with a modicum of talent were interested in metagaming. Robyn wouldn't have felt good being saved by a meta anyway, I'm sure.

Also in retrospect, she could be one of the direct inspirations for my writing style today, because I too have gravitated more toward "plain," unimportant, unspecial characters over the years, wanting them to shine for their writing, not for how uber ultra cool and powerful they are. Robyn was whistling that tune before the germ of the kernel of the idea was even planted in my head.

So she never owned land, she never made it rich, and she ultimately walked out of the story with a completely undeserved reputation (IC) as a jealous bimbo, a furious temper, and a criminal. But she's one of the brief presences in one of my earliest decent-ish RP experiences that I will absolutely never forget. And I probably owe her a lot.

First of all, that's crazy that you also started Roleplaying in Runescape too. I too did some in-game roleplaying similar to your experience, albeit in what was probably a much more primitive fashion before moving to space opera roleplays on the Runescape forums.

Having just read Gharekh's latest post and being positively blown away, I second the recommendation to check out Vampire Princes. Gharekh's earlier posts were all well written, but honestly, I didn't see how he was going to be anything but a minor character. That all changed at the end your last post. Now we have a truly malign vampire the likes of which we haven't seen before. Edward and Dregen have a run for their money.

I currently run a Nightmare Before Christmas 1x1 AU RP, with the base plot revolving around Lock. Shock, and Barrel as teenagers and playing off of monster OCs their age. There is literally not a single character in it that I don't like, whether it's the tricksters, the other monster teens, other Halloween Town citizens, and characters we created for later use. That said, I do have my favorites.

Of my partner's characters, that would be Carver.

Carver is a pumpkin-headed creation of Dr. Finklestein's that basically learned how to people from Lock, Shock, and Barrel, and became more or less a fourth member of their group. As her name implies, she's a pumpkin carver who basically started out as a birdcage with a pumpkin head and little arms with Edward Scissorhands-esque hands for her pumpkin carving, with her pumpkin vines serving as makeshift "muscles" to move them. She was meant to stay in one place and carve pumpkins so Finklestein could win the pumpkin carving contest, but she accidentally gained sentience during the activation process. She saw the Corpse family and assumed she was supposed to be a child to Finklestein and his creation, Jewel, but as her creator rejected this role, Carver decided to take her cues from those who were actually her size anyway: Lock, Shock, and Barrel.

She has since gained mobility, and as the trio grew up, she got limb enhancements to "grow" with them (and always makes sure she's a few inches taller than Lock just to piss him off. He's the shortest). Being more or less a genderless robot, Carver is nonbinary, but often uses feminine pronouns for two reasons: it pisses off her creator, who basically intended for her to be a tool and not a sentient being, and to round out the group so Shock isn't the only girl. Ironically, as they grew older and more monsters appeared, most of their social group overall is female. She used to be a sweet, childlike creation, and has since grown into a surly teen who thinks no one understands her but her friends (plot twist: she's not as misunderstood as she thinks. If you've ever seen Meet the Robinsons, Carver is basically Goob. She has that whole, "Hey, Goob! Wanna play?"/"They hated me" mentality. XD).

Carver currently holds the title of Best Character in this game because she's hilarious and a troll. She often keeps a bucket of popcorn in her cage to share with Barrel and munch on when shit goes down - and it often goes down. She's the primary instigator of an ongoing running joke where the witches' niece, Agatha, crushes on Barrel, who is completely oblivious to it. Carver often gives bad advice to Agatha to "woo him over" while manipulating the situation (often with Shock's help) to ensure Barrel doesn't catch on. She taught Igor to pull the switch to create lightning for dramatic effect whenever Finklstein realizes whatever shenanigan she just pulled and screams her name in frustration. Having no sex organs or need for romance, Carver finds Sally's romance novels hilarious, and often because she takes them too literally. She can hold her own in a fight with any of the tricksters. She often finds flaws in their plans, and helps make them better. Carver also has decent rapport with some citizens, like Behemoth, who taught her the ins and outs of pumpkins, and Sally, to whom she can share gripes about trying to evade Finklestein. She does get frustrated with being considered an afterthought in comparison to her friends, though. Lock, Shock, and Barrel were the original pranksters, so while her friendship with them is acknowledged, a Halloween Town citizen is far more likely to blame one or all of them first for any mischief before they even consider her.

Carver's great. I fucking love her.

Of my characters (and let's be real here, I tend to cover most of the canons), it's Shock. Not even a contest.

Her base characterization is "bitch," which in and of makes her fun to play. In this version, she is the worst (non-evil: that has to be specified because there are a few characters who are legitimately evil in this game) person in all of Halloween Town, and due to it, is the second most-feared monster after Jack. Shock likes playing massive tricks, with the end result of making the victim(s) as miserable as she can - Jack can actually generally gauge which trickster was behind a trick based on this. Her latest brain child? Making all of Halloween Town think they missed Halloween. While it took her brothers' and Carver's assistance to pull it off, it's amazing what you can accomplish with a few forget-me-lots and some fog juice. She got entertainment for days watching other citizens meander and moan over "missing" the most important day of the year. Totally worth the punishment from Jack when he and Sally finally figured it out.

After Oogie's defeat, Shock asserted herself as the trio's leader and maintained that status as the trio grew up. It's telling that Barrel is physically bigger and stronger than her, but won't start a fight with her. That's because Shock doesn't rely solely on brute force to get her way: she's devious and clever too, and knows how to turn her younger brothers' strength against them to ensure her leadership status. She raises scorpions to sell (whole and in parts) to the witches' shop so she and her brothers have a source of income, and actually personally set the high standard regarding her products, because it would only take one ruined potion to ruin her business. Halloween Town generally has a saying: they trust her wares, but her, not so much. Shock also often has a trained scorpion to assist her in her mischief.

While Shock takes pride in her reputation as a bitch, she isn't heartless. Like most of Halloween Town, she'll help a monster in need, regardless of personal opinion. Of course, once the truce ends, she'll happily backstab if it suits her, so make a deal with her at your own risk. She also looks out for Lock and Barrel (and to some extent, Carver), sometimes to the point of her own detriment. She may not always openly show it, but she loves them more than anything, and will subtly (and sometimes not-so-subtly) manipulate a situation to ensure their overall happiness. Part of the reason she ensures she retains her leadership position is to ensure normalcy among the trio and to keep things fun even after Oogie's passing. She's also able to make difficult decisions Lock or Barrel may not have the stomach for.

One of the biggest plot points in the game is Lock, Shock, and Barrel are the only citizens who are actively growing and aging (Carver doesn't count; if not for her limb enhancements, she'd be in stasis like everyone else). All the other teens kind of appeared as the age they are, and stay there. There's a legitimate fear among the trio of reaching adulthood, because for most of their lives, they were young children, and now, suddenly, they're growing up and dealing with change when everyone else around them stands still. Being the oldest, Shock is going to reach adulthood first, and the thought legitimately terrifies her. Part of the reason she's controlling and insistent on retaining normalcy in the trio is because of this. She also recognizes how it affects her brothers: Lock is in a relationship, but the aging issue undertones it, because he may eventually out-grow his partner. Barrel is a lot more casual overall, but he's also the least responsible one, and being a teen still allows him to be somewhat carefree, whereas adulthood means responsibility. Being children for so long also screws them all up mentally, as they feel they should all still be little trick-or-treaters, and that the stasis they once had vs. them now growing up is a constant mental battle as they fight their more childlike urges for some semblance of maturity. Shock publicly appears to be the most collected of the three, as she utilizes her reputation to make Halloween Town think twice about messing with her - or her carefully crafted reality - and that everything she does is just a devious game to her. Truthfully, she's walking a tightrope without a net while balancing weights in either hand - and that tightrope gets thinner and more threadlike each day while the weights get heavier and heavier.
