Profession: Vitaes Commanding Officer
Nationality: Martian Unity
Strengths:
  • Special Ops Training: Mars always prided itself on it's special ops division, prior to being assigned to the Vitae. Locke spent his entire career on stealth ships running surveillance and counter surveillance ops. In the three day war he lead a fleet of ships in a flanking maneuver against the Devastators. His training gives him a unique way of thinking over more traditional officers.
  • Charismatic: So long playing the spy game, he's good at working with people and simply working people.
  • Intelligent: He may not be a scientist of any caliber, but he's well educated. He's a tactician in his own right.
  • Respected: He's known to never expect anything of his crew that he himself wouldn't do, which makes his crew trust and respect him. He doesn't just throw his weight around.

Weaknesses:
  • Career Military: He may be Spec Ops and used to not going on much, but he's still used to following orders. It'll be hard to adapt to the last order of 'See to it that humanity survives'. Not to mention it goes against "leave no man behind".
  • Prejudice: He'll say it won't affect him, but most Martians grew to resent people from Earth first for their treatment, second Mars had a desert and tried to turn it into a garden. Earth started with a garden and paved it. It's something he never understood and thought them to be fools for. He also harbors a strong resentment to those who would willingly alter themselves with cybernetic enhancements. Not to mention he's no doubt going to have to deal with the different political needs of the different factions, even though he knows that the Martian way works best...
  • Missing eye: He lost his eye when a bulkhead exploded during the defense of Mars in the Three Day War, while he himself refused a replacement he still sometimes gains pain from the injury and it limits his peripheral vision.
  • Depression: He'll wear a strong face, but he can't deny loosing his home, family and even his planet has had a psychological effect on him.

Personal Effects:
  • Photograph: A photograph of him, Amanda and Amara when Amara was a baby.
  • Model: He has a scale model of the Nightfury, a gift from Amara.
  • Wedding Ring: While he wears his own wedding ring he also keeps Amandas in his room.
  • Mineral Samples: Mineral samples of Martian Dirt.
  • Book Tomes: In his office he has a sample of various Encyclopedias.
  • Whisky/Beer: He has a sample of fine Beers and Whiskys, the likes of which survive in the archives but will never be brewed again.

Bio:

Childhood

William Locke was born to parents John and Margaret Locke in the Martian Capital city of Arcadia. His Father was an ex-Military engineer whose service had been cut short when he lost his left arm and was no longer able to perform his duties, refusing to take even a prosthetic he had no choice but to take a honorable discharge and retire to civilian life. His mother on the other hand was a successful detective, as while crime rates were low they did exist. As such William spent the majority of his infantile years with his father rather than his mother.

When he was young Martian Cities still existed within domes, as the air quality while it was breathable was considered poor. That was until he was ten years old, he still remembers the day when in mass celebration they finally began to dismantle the domes. It was seen as the change in the tide, with the air finally of pure quality the Martian dream of a planet full of life was coming closer. That said part of him secretly resented people from the Federation and Conglomerate for the ability to grow up on Earth, how they could waste so much green he could never understand.

This is what drove him to want to head off-world. There was so much else even in the Sol System that he could go out and see, so much more than this barren red world. Though he didn't want to do it just for the sake of leaving, he wanted to go out into the stars to help people on his homeworld as much as possible. The military was the way to do this, that way he'd help his people and see the stars. It was a win/win situation, all he had to do was get the grades to cut it. He didn't want left in some dead end position within the military, he was going to fly a ship one day. He just knew it.

Early Military Service

At age eighteen he enrolled in the Martian Navy. Due to the small population of Mars, and it's age in comparison, the Martian fleet typically relied on advanced tactics using stealth technology and long range weapons giving the Martian Navy the best SpecOps programs in the solar system. Every recruit was required to sit and aptitude test, as the Navy wanted everyone who could join this program to join it.

William proved that he had what it took time and time again. They trained him to be a thinker, to think of solutions that others may not. Pitting him against computer simulations programmed to understand even the most complicated battle tactics, he was trained in reading terrain, gathering information and even in espionage. Unlike regular military training this kept him busy right up until the age of 21, technically past the time required for minimal service, but he already knew that he was in the career track for the rest of his life. His instructors told him he had a knack for surveying the battlefield, and he was going to put it to use for the rest of his days to ensure that his people were safe.

He'd never be sidelined in some office.

The Scourge

His first command was a ship called the Arcadius, a light corvette designed to look like a cargo vessel. The mission, take down The Scourge who was a man whose real name was Tiberius Wallace. Wallace had been an infamous pirate for years, William was raised on stories about Wallace and his exploits throughout the solar system. He had a nasty of habit of striking single unsuspecting targets and disappearing without a trace the moment any form of naval ship turned up to stop him. He attacked ships no matter what their origin or their destination and always somehow seemed to know current fleet movements of Armani, Federal, Conglomerate and Unity forces.

So William Locke took on the persona of a man on a mission to mine water out of the Asteroid belt near Ceres station, and in deep space water was a valuable resource. It was more valuable to the Armani than minerals. It was during this time that he grew close to a Martian Doctor who was working on Ceres station for a small company, her name was Amanda Holling. It made his job that much harder, as he didn't want to lie to her but couldn't tell her the truth. So he simply withheld information.

Nearly a year into the mission, while they had gathered some information on Wallace they were yet to have an actual encounter with the infamous pirate. Until one day on a return trip from Ceres station they were attacked by Wallaces ship, the first shot causing critical damage to the engines. While those around him began to panic William kept his cool and as XO, made the decision to disengage the fake cargo pods revealing the weapon systems. The battle was short lived however, Wallace not being used to a fight realizing he had disabled the engines on the Arcadius simply fled.

It took the Arcadius months to crawl back into Martian Orbit and by the time they got there they discovered that the unlikely had happened. Unity, Federal and Conglomerate ships had worked together in order to defeat The Scourge once and for all.

Marriage

At the age of twenty three William proposed to his girlfriend of two years, Amanda Holling. With his mission over, and her returning to Mars after she had completed the task she had set out to do the two decided it was time to take the next step. Others chastised them on jumping into things too quickly when they had barely seen each other in the two years they had been together, but neither truly cared what other people had to say. It was like an old romantic movie, one of the ones Amanda used to force William to watch.

Having both accumulated time off with their recent jobs, after the two were married they took their honeymoon all the way to Earth. They were both stunned by the planet, they had seen pictures and holograms obviously but neither had seen a world so blue and so green. Avoiding the urban centers they found a relatively untouched part of Africa to spend their time away from the barren world. It was then that they decided that one day they would retire in Africa once they had both done their jobs to the best of their abilities. Though it also solidified Williams resentment towards people of the Conglomerate and the Federation, how they could pave such a beautiful world was beyond him. They squandered their gifts, they truly did.

Continued Service

William gained his first full command the same year, a stealth combat vessel called the Nightfury. It was one of the latest designs built by the Unity, capable of going undetected while also packing a punch. He was immediately deployed in order to gain a full diagnostic by testing the ships systems in an active environment. For the next two months he played hide and seek games with the Second Martian Fleet, trying to get close enough to let loose a devastating missile at the command ship without being detected. The whole time a team of scientists remained on board adjusting the stealth systems, while it couldn't actively cloak it had retro-reflective paneling which was designed to disrupt both visual detection and detection from sensor systems.

One of the benefits of such a command however was that due to long term deployment the ship had advanced communication systems on it allowing for him to talk with Amanda back on Mars with relative ease. It wasn't an ideal situation but it was the one they were in, and like most Martian families it was just something they learned to accept and live with. He spent the next two years playing war games both within the Martian Fleet and testing the capabilities of the Federation and Conglomerate fleets, that was until his next big surprise.

Fatherhood

On an extended period of shore leave after a particularly long operation far out in the solar system Amanda announced that she was pregnant. William was understandably the regular mix of excited and panicked, there was celebration and there was a lot of joy going around. With the Nightfury's relief crew performing an equally long maneuver, this gave him time to spend with his pregnant wife while also planning ahead for the future of what his life was about to become.

He only had one month after Amara was born, and he already knew that everything he did from now on wasn't just for his people, but more specifically for her. She would be the reason he got up in the morning and made sure that the solar system was a safer place so that by the time she was old enough that she got to serve her planet she would be put in no danger, at least not if he could help it. So one month after she was born, he said goodbye to return to active duty. Communications back home became even more frequent so he could keep in touch with her, so that every time he got home she would know who he was.

Devastation

2196 was the year that burnt itself into his memory, burnt itself into the memory of every human being no matter where they were from. On April 1st William as on his way back home in order to spend some much needed shore leave with his (quickly growing) daughter. He had even managed through trading to pick up a small cacti that he was planning on giving to her for her birthday that he had regretfully missed due to being deployed, that's when the call came in to report to the nearest Martian Fleet with all due haste, meaning that he was meant to use his Jump Drive. A system that was rarely used by ships unless in an emergency situation or crossing vast distances. That made him know how important the situation was.

On arrival footage of the Outreach massacre was relayed to his ship and he watched it in pure horror as the vessels simply cut through the space station and it's defenses. They continued to advance through space, as the Martian Fleets retreated to Mars Orbit. He disagreed with the call, they shouldn't be on the defensive as that let the enemy dictate the terms while if they were offensive the Devastators as the media quickly dubbed them would be forced to fight on their terms. He watched as a small Martian detachment was sent to Ceres station, only one ship returned and it barely made it back on front of the Devastator fleet. There was mass panic, the fear could be smelt on the bridge of the Nightfury as the fleet pulled into orbit and the two fleets began exchanging weapons fire, despite having the numerical advantage the Devastators continued to press onwards.

Breaking off from the main engagement William took a handful of ships, utilizing the chaos of the battle and their stealth technology he snuck them right behind the Devastator vessels letting loose weapons fire into their undefended flank. This wasn't enough, and just as people began to lose hope another massive fleet jumped into orbit... the fleet of the Federation and Conglomerate. The battle was tough, and intense William remembers most of it as a blur. What he does remember however is seeing an energy bolt come straight for his vessel, he felt it collide... before blacking out.

He woke a day later, missing an eye. Commendations came due to his quick thinking and heroism, as did the promotion to Rear Admiral. He was due to deploy again back in the Nightfury as part of the united fleet when he received the call, that Amanda had fallen deathly ill, and rapidly. Using what pull he had he switched out his deployment so he could hurry home. The next couple of weeks were tough for a reason, as the rest of his life came crashing down with the death of his wife. He had fought so long, and so hard to keep her safe and in the end it was something he couldn't fight against that took her. He felt so helpless, he would likely have descended into alcoholism if not for the fact that he was now his daughters sole carer. He took a desk job at the Institute for Martian Military Intelligence in order to give himself stable hours as he settled in for the long haul.

The Vitae

As Amara left for her standard military service, making him incredibly proud as she chose a career in the military as a medic. She was always the best of both him and Amanda, he had always said as much and now she was proving it. This was when he was called to a classified briefing with High Admiral Roland Constantine about something named the Genesis Project. He could hardly believe it at first, nor all the various conditions and stipulations, however realizing that if the second war with the Devastators were to possibly wipe out all of humanity that he'd rather have this chance to safeguard what remained, especially with the fact that this would definitely give Amara a chance to live if all else failed.

So for the past ten years he has been living on the Vitae, getting to know her systems in and out giving him a knowledge of the Ark that few others have as he helped select the crew that would call this ship home (the more important members of the crew that is, he didn't interview everyone). All the while he kept track of his daughters career out of personal interest as all he wanted, the main reason he took this job was to keep her safe. During this time he did once again become close to someone, Admiral Rita Haworth of the Rejuvenation. Though he never told Amara, knowing that the relationship was doomed to end the moment the Devastators appeared in orbit.

As the Vitae left after enacting of Genesis and then Exodus protocols William Locke has struggled with the idea of not fighting, and fleeing instead. His trials for the past five years have been balancing life as a father, while also becoming an official responsible for not only military but as a civillian ruler as well. As tension grows he's had to find ways to balance the military protocols in him with what people want. That said, he has to push on through the struggles. AS there can be no turning back.

"Look at this, ain't she a beauty?"
"Why do I look like an ancient rock music performer?"
"Me and the guys are making these 'what if's fake ID's to pass the time down at fabrication,
when it came to you we thought '21st century's futuristic vision theme'. I think we nailed it."
"You did."

Player Name: Oakman
Character Name: Dr. Ludwig Dobrov XII
Character Age: Born 2176 – 45 years old.
Character Gender: Male
Profession: HCCA (Head of Civilian Crew Affairs) – Office of Civil Rights.
Nationality: Roslin Federation.

Strengths:

"Riots are the sparks, Revolution is the Fire"

Dr. Ludwig has the natural ability to address a massive crowd of people from different backgrounds and speak his ideas, message, ideals, and thoughts without hesitation. He can unite a group of people for a common cause, as he has done so quite a few times during his life. Dr. Ludwig's talent is in that initial cry of encouragement and unification, he only unites the people under one banner, ignite the spark. However he has never took the actual role of leading people, or seeing what he is rallying people for through. Most of times he believes in what he yells- as he prefers to speak without the aid of technology, believing human voice to be powerful enough- other times he is paid to rally people to a certain cause. He was paid by state governors to calm the dissatisfied people, by politicians looking to gain new backers and supporters, or even start a riot for causes that would benefit a commercial corporation.

"I made a fortune as a young teenager by arm-wrestling adult fishermen"

Dr Ludwig can arm-wrestle the biggest man in the room and win without breaking a sweat, and he doesn't even use his right prosthetic arm, instead he wrestles with his regular left arm. He always had strength in his arms from a young age, his mother told him he was the descendant of some very strong Scandinavian tribe and ever since he never lost a round of arm-wrestling. Now that he is forty-five years old he stopped partaking in the sport, not for the lack of strength, but to maintain his facade of elegance and status. His right prosthetic arm is a sleek combat-ready issue, meaning he can punch through materials like cardboard, plaster, break bones, or use it as a defensive shield against knives and blunt weaponry. Activating his prosthetic right arm's combat features however drains a lot of energy, and hence they are designed for emergency situations, and rarely to assault a platoon.

"The Tongue is the Deadliest Muscle"

Aside from his ability to rally a group of people for a certain cause, Dr. Ludwig further developed himself through years of reading and researching human behavior, human motives, body language, psycholinguistics, basic psychology, and economy. He can't manipulate a person to do his bidding, however he can tell why the same individual wouldn't do certain things and thus come up with ways to convince them otherwise. He can partake in debates and use whatever means necessary to win, or get his points across in an unfiltered and uncensored manner. He values expression of thoughts and facts over the consideration of emotion or social decorum, and hence he can sometimes strike below the belt when it comes to heated conversations and debates. Dr. Ludwig can speak to anyone, from a lowly technician with extreme introversion and selective mutism, to a high ranking official with royal background and delusions of grandeur. As long as it involves a tongue, and a set of ears, he can do wonders.

Weaknesses:

"Material Gain isn't Greed, it's Survival"

Dr. Ludwig is forty-five years old yet he never had a stable relationship, he never experienced intimacy, never had a circle of close friends. He can be quite the charming gentleman, or quite the understanding friend, however people always begin avoiding him after getting to know shades of his true personality. He is by far the most materialistic person in the room, he values resources-physical resources- and material gain over anything noble or ulterior. He is quite frank when it comes to material gain, either in the form of currency, promotion, shift in status, or recognition by a body of peers, he always makes it clear to people that it is his priority or motive. And hence he gets a reputation for being selfish, greedy, and of no potential to do good without expecting reward.

"Annoying? If a cockroach told you that, would you be offended?"

Dr. Ludwig is a massive pain the sides. For what he has in the department of public speaking, analyzing people, and a diction worthy of celebrated writers, he lacks the basic trait of being tolerable. When he is not being ludicrously rude and unbound by basic social etiquette, he is quite annoying and pesky. Sometimes it's his inquisitive attitude, sometimes it's his non-stop monologues, other times it is just his presence in the same room. People have always sought Dr. Ludwig in his line of work for he was among the best in what he accomplished, however people also left him as soon as their queries are answered, not wanting to spend another minute in his presence. This mixed with his principles on prioritizing material gain over deeper spiritual or humane motives earned him the nickname "Dr. Bugwig".

"Our greatest enemy isn't the unknown, but the familiar that one night decides to murder the hand which fed it for years"

As intelligent and understanding as Dr. Ludwig may seem, he has a great bias against Martians and Fleeters. He doesn't hold grudges for those factions specifically, but he considers people outside of Earth as secondary in importance or level of status. He keeps an open-mind amidst a crowd of scientists and thinkers, however when he is in a room full of common Martians he displays disgust, and unreasonable disdain. This aspect of him is yet to be known publicly, and he doesn't seem to acknowledge it as something he should work on, instead he takes great pride in being Earth-born, and Earth-raised.

2176 - Neo Portland, Oregon, The Roslin Federation

June the 5th, 8:56 PM
A middle-aged woman in a fancy purple dress laced with ember resin and diamonds is laying on a hospital stretcher, screaming for husband in a terrified tone. She was shrieking for help, as if something unnatural was about to befall her, she shifted between sharp screeching and soft, subtle whimpers. A group of three android nurses rushed to the woman and began their programmed protocols of comforting her, calming her down until a Doctor was to arrive. She kept screaming for her husband, the nurses insisted that the woman should relax her vocal cords.

After several minutes of struggle the android nurses restrained the woman and injected her with sedatives. "Is it going to risk the delivery?" one android asked in a monotone voice, it was one of them cheaper and older model T//BOT.s medical androids. "Negative, we must separate the two as per the instructions," another android replied.

June the 9th, 6:35 AM
The middle-aged woman woke up and slowly recollected a distant dream. What started as a brief confusion quickly turned into unspeakable horror when she felt her womb lighter, emptier, and slightly burning. "My Baby," she uttered in fear, then followed by a scream of confusion as she realized she was shackled to her bed. Moments pass by and the same 3 android nurses arrive with the most unnatural mannerisms, the woman didn't know their artificial nature, didn't care as she quickly asked not of her location but the whereabouts of her baby. "Ma'am you are in shock, you were admitted 4 days prior after surviving a lethal accident," an android delivered the facts in the same monotonous voice, "You are the sole survivor, your husband passed away last night. Please take a moment to process your grief," the same android instructed. The woman was left with extreme confusion, her thoughts suddenly suspended upon hearing the death of her husband, and still no mention of her 9 months old unborn baby.

2188 - Neo Portland, Oregon, The Roslin Federation
June the 5th, 4:50 PM

Ludwig Sat on the porch of his house, observing the afternoon sun shimmering off the pacific waves. His face rested on both his palms, while his thighs supported his elbows. His eyelids covered half his eyeball as he lost himself to the breeze and the sight of fish swarming below the waves. Behind him was a massive traditional hand-made banner that read:

"HAPPY 12th BIRTHDAY LUDWIG DOBROV XII - LOVE AND LOVE"

And in in a smaller font:

"WE LOVE YOU SO MUCH, MOM and DAD"

Ludwig's aunt approach him and sat beside him, "where are they Aunt Julie?" Ludwig asked. His aunt couldn't gather the courage to break his heart, she opted to hug him and remind him that he was greatly loved by her, and his parents.

2216 - Undisclosed Site, The Roslin Federation
XX XX XX, 3:22 AM

Ludwig is 40 years old, single, alone, about to board one of the Arks leaving Earth for good. He was lighting an artificial cigar, staring up the stars, taking in the ghastly play of silent actors and unmasked, naked galaxies. A pair of fingers tapped his shoulder, he turned his head and saw her, his colleague Meredith.

"When it was made known to me that we won't be boarding the same Arks it felt like a punch to the gut, but look at me complaining about surviving extinction, even if it meant surviving it alone," she understood him, yet she didn't fear laying it out, expressing her innermost feelings to him. He nodded as if it was richer than any word, as if his nod had greater weight than any made up string of words, and to her it had value. His nod was one of understanding, and perhaps slight grief. She took out a book from her purse and handed it to him, "Look at this, they finally published your autobiography."

"A bit late isn't it?" He chuckled.

"Not to me, I'm taking a copy with me aboard the Ark," she leaned in to embrace him, she hesitated and pressed her hands against his instead. "Stay safe, I will miss you greatly."

He leaned in, embraced her and whispered to her ears, "Thanks you, I will be missing you as well." They exchanged one final glance of warmth, as if that of parting friendship, then she walked away in the night's mist. Ludwig examined the book's cover, much to his chagrin the book used a portrait of his. He browsed through the initial pages and stumbled into the book's outline:

" I was born and raised in Neo Portland, Oregon. My mother fled the European Confederacy after meeting my father, they both eloped to the pacific northwest where they also had their honey moon. I don't remember my early years with them as I only remember as far as the age of six when my Aunt began looking after me, I used to see my father and mother once every 3 weeks, and they'd stay for a short amount of time before leaving again. They kept talking about how they are occupied with something greater than anything they have embarked on, and that even though they loved me they couldn't leave what they were working on. They never told me what they were in charge of, and I stopped caring about it when my mother passed away in 2196.

Everybody called it the "Three Day War", the day Humanity and its future was altered in ways it never experienced before. At the time I dismissed the idea of extraterrestrial invaders, and merely blamed the Martians. For some reason or another I was convinced that the Martians finally decided to retaliate against Earth for some reason or another, other days I made up other theories and explanations. This was before I started my career in Linguistics and before getting my PHD's. I was naive, but I was preoccupied with my mother's mysterious death. Even in the midst of Extraterrestrial attack I heard naught from my father, neither to comfort me after losing a mother, or to shield me against an Alien threat.

By 2206 I had already completed my Thesis for my 2nd Doctorate in the field of Human Behavior and Linguistic Communications, I had worked as a public speaker for various companies, organizations, political campaigns and propaganda programs. I have made progress in a few under the notion of supporting my beliefs, and most of the times I was paid to move the masses. I am not ashamed to admit that some of the rallies I led were benefiting corporations I won't name, and I was exclusively paid to do just that. In 2207 I was contacted by an organization I won't name that discussed my potential employment in their program, at the time of writing this autobiography the matter was still private, but trust me when you are reading this book fifty years from now, you will know what program I am talking about.

In 2215 I began working as the Federation's diplomat in external affairs pertaining to the Genesis Project, during my first 2 years serving as the Federation's representative I was forced to meet and deal with numerous Martians. It was a new experience to me as I have never met a martian before, I have to admit they were different. Something just didn't feel right about Martians, I'm not saying they are inherently problematic, however they think and act differently than we Earth-born would. Nonetheless it was a new experience for me, and I was thrilled not only by the promise of wealth but also fame and recognition by my peers whether on Earth or on Mars."

2221 |CURRENT| the Vitae

Ludwig has been on the Vitae for over five years now, he began working as the Head of Civilian Crew Affairs. He was responsible for keeping the awaken civilian crew happy and harass-free from both other civilians and military personnel. Ludwig is also the appointed representative and diplomat speaking for the people of the Roslin Federation, and the official consultant of Federation affairs. Despite his slight bias towards the Federation, Ludwig still considers his service towards the civilians and protecting both their comfort and liberties his utmost responsibilities. In the effort to further establish more clear notions of rights for the civilians and avoid a complete military rule without accountability, Ludwig established the Office of Civil Rights under the authority and blessings of the United Earth Council.

It's been five years and for Ludwig it's been the same routine, which mostly included very little intimate human interaction after his official office and working hours. He still thinks of Meredith, the closest person he has to a friend, who unfortunately boarded a different Ark. Ludwig began developing quite the unfavorable reputation for himself as an annoying and pesky person, especially to the Marines and and the higher ranking officials. His inquisitive nature and persistent manner even granted him a few anonymous hate letters, and even one death-threat signed with "You know me, because I hate you so much Dr. Ludwig".

Civil Rights and Civilian comfort being the top agendas on Ludwig's schedule, he never hesitates to be pesky to almost anyone necessary to further his agendas and goals. Despite this all, Ludwig is still quite popular among the low ranking workers, engineers, service providers, and anyone that ever felt crushed by unjust situation or parties.

Relationships: Nothing intimate or special with anyone specific. Ludwig can talk to almost anyone with no trouble, regardless of rank or status. However due to personality flaws (read weaknesses) it is very hard for people to stick with him beyond his working hours.

It is important to note that generally he has a reputation for being annoying and inconvenient, because he prioritizes solving crew issues over the comfort of those responsible or even under question, again regardless of occupation or rank.

However, as mentioned in the bio, Ludwig is the people's champ in a sort of way. The working class so to speak and service providers always find a savoir in him whenever they are treated unjustly, threatened, or need help with a party or a situation beyond their hands.
