Honestly? I was sort of expecting demons. Don't know why. But it's vague enough that it could be, like Rawk said, a genetic experiment fuckup. Or, more likely perhaps, another person with powers whose powers either didn't manifest correctly or had terrible side effects. Remember, demonic can be used to describe something that isn't necessarily a demon. 
Personally, I'm guessing this thing is a failed super power person who's attracted to the large concentration of powered people, sort of like an AIM ghost in Raildex. I'll be interested to find out the actual explanation though.
