Ohta would rather that gunman get eaten by a bear or something, but he kept his thoughts to himself as he trudged behind the girl. No need to speak up now, after all. They had ground to cover if he was to get any chance of a comfortable sleep today. While she stalled at the statues, glancing over the faded stone as if it held any answers, Ohta swept the area around them instead, his phone’s light catching basically nothing. Sucked. Those statues looked like they were big enough to warrant some sort of plaque or information board, but perhaps they were just as unremarkable as the jizo statues one would find off the side of a road. Nothing more than attractive litter now.

He hunched his own shoulders against the buzzing of a nascent storm. It should be better to be in the treeline by the time the rain came down, and with that in mind, Ohta spoke up again.

“Um, don’t you think we should keep going now? We sorta don’t have any clothes to change out of if we get wet, and if the storm comes in while we’re out in the open…maybe let’s get over there?” It’d be a funny story to tell Tamimi after he worked off the debts and gotten a better job. They could oogle the statues all they wanted then. For now though, Ohta wanted fucking out. Not that he was planning on voicing his thoughts in any manner other than a pensive question.
Alright, gonna post in two days.

There was something particularly miserable about waking up while the sun was hardly in the sky, a mind-numbing misery that made every step of hers feel just a little bit more shaky. Her breath escaped in cold puffs as she viewed Koto from atop a crest on the road, splitting apart her pork bun and chewing on it thoughtfully. The juicy meat and tender dough did a bit more to wake her up. At least she wouldn’t be heading to the scene empty-stomached. Others had already arrived upon the ice-glazed waters, slaying youkai by the dozens. Masashi was showboating as always, Jun was showing his boat, and the other magical girls were doing actual work. What did Haniwa call this again? The 100 Demon Parade? From her viewpoint, it was definitely more than a hundred, and definitely enough trouble to demand the attention of all magical girls in Tokyo.

Zen sighed. Even if her magical nature allowed her to live out her everyday life without any problems on only six hours of sleep a night, this certainly wasn’t doing her height any favours. All just belly-aching though. She finished the rest of her pork bun, already lukewarm from December’s cold, and turned. Parked on the side was a police vehicle, the speed redundant for a magical girl but the authority it granted very relevant. Officer Nadeshiko sat behind the wheel, the sharply-dressed woman enjoying a hot coffee within the confines of her vehicle. When eye contact was made though, the woman flashed Zen an ‘ok’ sign.

Preparations ready then. Time to meguca.

Twenty-seven beads rattled in the morning air as Zen brought her hands together in consternation.

“Sunrise burn bright! True Heart Zenshin!”

The world burns to sin.

Verdure reduces to shadows against the starless black. Dead leaves fall and sea waters rise, cold quagmire drawing the wanderer to the depths. She sinks with every step, vestments muddied by mud that clung like desperate hands.

Mιʂҽɾყ υɳႦσυɳԃ, ʂυϝϝҽɾιɳɠ υɳƚσʅԃ, ʂαʅʋαƚισɳ υɳϝσυɳԃ.

She drowns, slipping into fathoms so crushing her breath could not escape her lips, fathoms so elusive her hands could find no purchase. The cycle of despairs and departures sanctioned deliverance not; a single light within the dark shone merely like a spider’s thread.

And yet, ‘twas a distillation of the Moon. ‘twas a sliver of the reflected Sun. ‘twas her Truth, regalia inescapable, vesture undeniable.

Eყҽʂ ƈʅσʂҽԃ, ƚԋαƚ ʂραɾƙ ɯαʂ ҽʋҽɾ ʂσ Ⴆɾιɠԋƚ.

Sԋҽ ɠɾαʂρʂ ιƚ ƚιɠԋƚ, ԋσʅԃʂ ιƚ ԃҽαɾ, αɳԃ ʅҽƚʂ ιƚ ιɠɳιƚҽ.

Drumbeats ripple within the fathoms. Heartbeats fill the void. Her hair aflame, her heart alight, the wanderer paints the depths anew, burning winds like crimson ribbons.

Scorching rays upon flaxen fields, heady glows of golden days.

Blazing leaves coat callow crags, azure charms above skyward eyes.

Drifting flakes over soundless seas, halcyon bliss in starglazed nights.

Blooming hues from tender shoots, nascent lives beneath icesurge tides.

Mιԃɳιɠԋƚ ʂυɳ Ⴆʅҽɳԃʂ ɯιƚԋ ρσʅαɾ ɳιɠԋƚ, ԃαყႦɾҽαƙ αɳԃ ƚɯιʅιɠԋƚ ɱҽʂɱҽɾιȥҽԃ.

Within this paradise, within artifice, the wanderer brings her hands together twice. For the land she seeks remains out of reach and the world she dreams remains incomplete. And thus, twenty-seven lights pierce her sky, twenty-seven beads weigh her hands, twenty-seven scents remind her of where she stands.

In this insatiable and insufferable world, this world without herself.

Her Pure Land beckons, and yet…

Sanguine eyes open.

In the parking lot of a Lawson’s, a rudimentary field hospital was set up, large white tents blocking off parking spaces while a quartet of ambulances rumbled, stocked up with supplies and personnel. Police sergeants jabbered on their radios, coordinating with officers on the streets to assist in evacuations around Koto, clearing civilians out of the incursion area as the mahou shoujos did their work. With the flood of more than a hundred youkai and Chiyoda’s Artillery Guardian having passed away a year ago, there were bound to be monsters that slip past the net of magical massacre. The ship in the sky had no cannons after all, while the spice witch’s hot sauce bottles only came in reasonably sized containers.

Which was why Tokyo’s police had gotten so much better with search-and-rescue and evacuations over the last three years. Which was why when large incidents like this came up, Zen helmed the backline, rather than join the vanguard.

A lab coat cloaked her shoulders, and a sarashi masked the light of her golden heart as the flame-haired maiden strode past the men and women, the fabric of her over-long hakama trailing her movements. Despite the winter chill, a pleasant warmth emanated from her pale skin, and her thoughts, guided by mystical enlightenment, remained in-step with her purposeful stride. Nadeshiko followed behind, her main contact and assistant within the force, ready to explain to anyone else who this child was.

It’d been some time since Zen had begun her activities though. Explanations now on the power of her healing fist were unnecessary, and the authorities stepped aside as she seized the radio connected to Koto district’s public address system. She took a breath, organized her words, and spoke clearly, the soothing voice of a juvenile Arhat drifting through the districts.

“Good morning, citizens of Koto and mahou shoujos. This is Shine Heart speaking. We’ve established an aid station at the Lawson’s beside Shinonome Station. If any mahou shoujo sees someone injured, please deliver them to the closest officer or to this station directly. Grand Admiral J, you should see a darkly-dressed magical girl throwing bottles of sauce down on the ice. If you could pick her up, that would be lovely, as her bombardments should compliment your flight. Red Rider, please be on a look out for the Turbo Granny, as you’re the only one who’d be able to match her speed if she arrives. And Masashi, you’re look great today out there! I’ll trust you to make sure that no other yokai leaves the ice and enters the streets.”

She let out a breath. She could do with another pork bun, but inbound sirens wailed, bringing the first patients for the day.

“That’s all, comrades. Let’s have a good one and be done before school starts!”
Naw, I wasn't waiting on Polaris in particular. It'd just be awkward to post any sort of question towards his character if he wasn't in the RP anymore.
So is Polaris still around?

“The best medicine tastes the worst. So clench your teeth.”

What can one person do to save the world? Start by saving those around them. And as the magical girl in charge of protecting perhaps the busiest place in Tokyo while also balancing her life as your average cute Japanese schoolgirl, Zen certainly has her hands full. That’s not something that ever gets her down though, especially not when she has a moment to remember all the people’s she’s managed to help during her three-year tenure as a magical girl contracted to Shennong. Just as Bianka Ataegina, Hero of Iberia, wielded a holy sword forged by all those whose lives she’s touched, Maruda Zen was a girl who found meaning in forming connections with others. Sometimes it was awkward, being mistaken for someone’s daughter before she punched the alcohol out of their systems. Other times it was hella fun, giving an injured athlete a chance to participate in the last game of their high school career.

There was misery of course. Beneath the veneer of lively nightlife and lightspeed business transactions, there was darkness enough to suffocate a child who still lived with her parents. And beyond Shibuya, the world continued to trudge towards self-destruction whilst pursuing self-satisfaction. Her fist could fix hearts, but her fist could only reach as far as her arm.

There were times where Zen would skip school and spend the day cocooned in her blankets. Times where she’d skip food and sleep out of adolescent anxiety. Times where she’d wear a mask so she didn’t have to smile. But in the end, she would always leave her cocoon, eat her meals, dream sweet dreams, and remove her mask. Because, with her youthful vim and vigor, with her immaturity and audacity, her simplistic view of the world and her desire for a better one, Zen would always find hope once more.

Zen is tough. And when the apocalypse comes, she’ll be even tougher than she is now, her golden heart beating its ardent brilliance and her clenched fist blessed to heal rather than destroy.

Was it fortunate that their conversation, whispered and frustrated, was unheard by the monstrosities that lurked just on the other side of the toppled tree trunks? Or was such leniency by the gods of the dice simply granted because it didn’t matter? Against the barbaric horde, no longer willing to hold back their own desires for slaughter and having given up on trying to puzzle out why they were here when none of them wanted to be here to begin with, the party plucked up their courage and charged!

Vaulting over the largest tree with superhuman speed and grace, the four-man vanguard all experienced the sensation of time slowing around them as their bodies sailed through the air. It gave them all precious seconds to determine their singular target, and like that, they struck! Magpie, exemplifying the dirty fighting and brute force of her Brawler class, felt the roar of her soul echo into her fist as she delivered an overhead smash that would’ve made the King of Combat proud. The unfortunate target of her violence couldn’t even let out a bray of agony before his face flew towards the ground, the muscular body of the gyunin doing a 180 before bouncing back up from the force.

He did not make it back down in one piece.

Though one-armed and with minimal strength, the similar anatomies of humans and gyunin allowed Raime to pick his targets cleanly, his own sword slicing into tendons and arteries. Murky blood gushed out, but such was his speed in that transient moment that his blade remained untainted by demonic viscera. And from behind, Ames rose up, the flame-haired animist’s hooked sword burning with a powerful radiance to chase away the gloom of the forgotten ruins. Thrusting forth, he drove his sword deep into the monster’s chest, before the additional force of his spiritual energies surged into the gyunin and tore the beast apart from the seams that Raime had sliced open.

The blast of shredded parts splattering against the ground was matched only by the sound of meat against meat, Klein and another gyunin engaging in the manly art of chest upon chest bumping. And still behind the fallen trees, Amulak spoke the cursed word of power granted to him by the miasmic nightmare-tree, splaying out both hands as blasphemous lightning shot out. Arcing across mossy green and crumbled stone, the bolts struck two desiccated corpses, granting unto them the essence of life once more. While the gyunin were all drawn by the brutish violence that the vanguard had displaced, four of them already closing in with braying battle cries, the dead rose amongst them, a green lightning sparking within their eye sockets.

And within Amulak’s mind, new nuggets of information about his undead thralls and the monsters they once were emerged.

Now, how could he leverage this?

“Infinite lives but limited time,” Man-Joji sneered in retaliation. “You’ll tire of your tenure in the Upper Realms by the time I’m through with you!”

Ari, swift as the cat that she borrowed her motif from, slipped into the brush as blades flew out of her hands, scattering against the serpent man’s thickened left arm as he swatted them away like a cloud of annoying flies. Drawing his writhing right arm back, he thrust out, and the multitude of snakes within fanned out as well, a cone-shaped burst of serpentine fury to decimate the foliage Ari had tumbled into.

“The latter,” Isidore replied, nodding at a few other familiar faces within the bar. The passage of time truly was disorientating within Gloomhaven; even after all this time, the tavern’s liveliness neither increased nor decreased. Otti was there though, and it was a surprise too to see that he had taken to Raezel. He had expected the Uruthan to be sulking in a corner, really, away from the hubbub of the tavern patrons, so to see her like this…

Well, no, she still looked like she was sulking, even with the glint of hope in her eyes. The man patted his chest twice, to give her the affirmation that the seed was indeed with him once more, before turning his attention towards Otti. “Can’t stay too long, friend,” he said. “I’ll return though. In the meanwhile, mind asking ‘round something for me?” He leaned in closer, voice dropping to a clandestine calm. “Looking to learn about a ‘Firebeard’ and the ‘Ice Guard’.”

Isidore stepped away after, motioning Raezel to come with him and exit the tavern. “I’ll buy you a drink next time, Otti. Till then!”

It was only until the half-blood and the homunculi were a block away from the tavern that he spoke up again. “I have the seed. But before we return to the tower, entertain me.” His gaze reflected only curiosity when he turned towards Raezel. “How would you prevent its theft a second time?"

I'm fine with it. A pleasant surprise after a disappointing experiment into discord RPing, really.
