Current You'd think after like 15 years I'd stop feeling like a fraud when writing posts but I still do which is both a statement on my self confidence and a compliment to how good my partners are as writers

And still manages to be a boring guy/girl, the writers dropped the ball just admit it.

Why would I admit something that isn't true?

And my Shepard's background wasn't vague, butcher of Torfan who ran with a gang back on earth.

If your character background can be summed up in a sentence, it's a vague background.

Shepard's background literally doesn't matter outside of a choice of sidequest in the first game and some minor dialog where people acknowledge Akuze or Torfan or the Blitz. Shepard intentionally has a background that is vague and interchangeable because Shepard, especially in the first game, is a player stand-in and it falls to the player to fill in the gaps of personality via red and blue options. The fact that you say 'working class squad leader with a boner for the worst race' is you doing just that. The only thing pre-defined about Shepard is their military reputation or whether or not their parents are dead. That's pretty blank canvas.

Ryder has more in common with the Inquisitor in terms of the way their character comes off in game.
Boom. There it is

Everything was happening so quickly, one thing led to another led to another and Sara, she of general laze and easy going natures, was having a difficult time keeping it together. There was a frantic, kinetic sort of energy and not all of it was simply Light being excited by an arachnae. To think her biggest concern, and secretly one of her bigger hopes, was being outed in front of the guests as something akin to a deviant. Considering the state of the room perhaps that would've been beneficial. If nothing else it would've meant that the center of attention was on her for long enough for every demi to pause in their antics.

Yet here she was, picking up pieces of a kitschy shattered vase while trying to process around three different conversations. Haru, that was the zombie who caused the breakage, was offering to pick up what she had dropped. Shau, that was the human who was responsible for the two extra guests currently in Sara's home, was offering both to help prepare food and to pay for the vase. And Aela, that being the arachnae, had asked a question that Sara would be remiss not to answer.

Given the unfamiliarity of everything, Sara would have very much liked to just scream out, though given the gentle nature of her voice she figured the only sound would be like that of a tiny, squeaking little mouse. So she did the next best thing of taking it all one at a time, a mystic technique she had used many times before in order to finish a page or portfolio before deadlines.

"Don't worry about it, Miss Haru." Surely her Goddess could understand the necessity of responding to the guests before attending to the request for a massage, and given the tone of sincerity in Haru's apology it was hard for Sara not to have a soft spot in return. "I know you didn't mean it and I was just thinking that I needed some new furnishings for this place!" That was a bold faced lie, but she said it with a smile and a matching sincerity that lasted all the way to the waste bucket where she discarded the shattered ceramics.

"I can't ask you to help out like that, Miss Shau. You're a guest here and while I may not have much I'm sure I can make something for you and your guests. Oh, and please, don't worry about the vase. I may not look it but I do have some money tucked away." Clearly Sara missed her calling with how she bounced from topic to topic without losing her wits."My guests, Miss Aela? Well, Miss Light seems to have really opened up since your arrival so I'm happy to see that she's making friends. And of course there's also my Godd-."

And that was when Sara heard the change in voice and diction and turned towards the couch. Yoki had pretty much been splayed across it but now she was being rather...meek about it? Was she observing niceties? But how did that explain the change in voice? "Yoki?" Sara blinked her confusion, freezing in place next to the couch. If this was something normal, she hadn't known or listened to any explanation. "Are you...alright? You sound...different?"

That was worrying, to say the least. "Uhm...anyway...my guests have been just...wonderful, Miss Aela. Are you happy with Miss Shau? She seems rather nice."

I'm just trying to wrap my head around the fact that of all the Spanish names in the world Buenito was settled upon.
Okay then. I can say with utmost confidence that Sara's gonna post today. Sorry for the wait. Back to the lewdness.
I'm interested. Either in playing Tracer or Symmetra.
And Ryder wasn't unlikable because he/she wasn't an unstoppable badass like shepard, Ryder was unlikable because he/she was a bland person thrown into a neutered version of the ME world surrounded by a bunch of mostly bland characters and the absolute worst sub-star trek villains you could think of. You cant blame all of this on MRA backlash.

Ryder was inherently more likable than Shepard because Shepard didn't develop much of a personality until the sequels largely because Shepard was a blank slate self-insert type of protagonist. The characters were on par with the crew of any Mass Effect game complete with the black one being the most absolutely dull one. And at least the new alien partner was more than just a Wikipedia article for his species like Tali was in the first game. The crew in Andromenda wound up feeling more like an actual crew than any of the cast of the first three games apart from Garrus and that's basically a cheat because he was there for everything.

I can think of worse villains. I just have to put in Mass Effect 2 for them. BioWare hasn't done compelling villains since Jade Empire and any character that might make for a nuanced, interesting villain wound up being ruined as soon as they put on their villain hat a la Illusive Man. The kett and The Archon were decent enough secondary motivations since they weren't the larger point until they actually involved themselves.

I'm not blaming it all on MRA backlash. I can place part of the blame on there being some rose colored glasses for large parts of the Mass Effect trilogy that only got smudged because Mass Effect 3 dropped the ball so absolutely but the more glaring problems with Andromeda as a game are more in its game design choices than its writing. But it's way easier to simply say "Cora got an SJW haircut and Peebee so randumb" than point out the actual bland, boring, and simply unfun design of the open world and moment to moment gameplay and the quest loop.

I get that the main character is supposed to be a blank canvas, but when the game gives you nothing to paint on that canvas apart from a small selection of poorly written rookie tropes, it will reflect badly on the big picture.

Ryder isn't really a blank canvas though. Unlike Shepard whose past was intentionally vague, Ryder is coming in with an unchanged occupation, background, and slew of family issues. Ryder is a painting that's three quarters finished and you're just slapping colors on there because it's due tomorrow.
