Name: Harwyn Storm

Alias: Red Harry

Age: A score of years and ten, or thereabouts. Recordkeeping of peasant births is iffy.

Appearance:

He inherited auburn hair from one or the other side of his family tree that streaks ginger in the sunlight. Around six feet, the most notable thing about him is his arms; the shoulders are muscled, and the arms quite long from years, starting in childhood, of bending the bow. His clothing is a well-made mishmash of battlefield scavenging, including boots that are his pride and joy, lovingly taken off some Pentoshi noble in the aftermath of some fight in the Disputed Lands. His feet have not ached since. He does wear a length of scarf about his neck that he can wrap about his head to protect from sun and dust. He has a dusting of freckles, but after years in the sun his skin finally stopped going lobster red with exposure.

Personality:

Harry is perfectly content to smile at milord and knuckle his brow...and then plot that bastard's demise. There has never been anything fair about his life, including the fights and he handles things accordingly. While he has a rough code of ethics with people whom he knows, the world is divided into him, us and them, with most people falling under the 'them' category. Harry looks out for himself, will not break a word given to 'us' and 'them' are the ones he would do it to first before they can do it to him. It's a hard old world. Harry does not let slights go, but will bide his time patiently. With a penchant for losing gold as quickly he obtains it, he manages to scrape by in any number of ways.

History:

Born a bastard in the Marches to a woman already married, Harry's lot as literally the red headed stepchild was not the best. His mother's husband, however, was a forester. He had little use for his Lord's bastard sired upon his wife, and the solution to his rage that didn't involve talking about his Lordship or his brother, Harry's actual father, was to give Harry the casual back of his fist. Harry's half-brother was more than a decade older and took little Harry under his wing with teaching him the ways of the trade, until a winter illness took him, along with the forester.

By that time, Harry was old enough to poach and support the rest of his mother's brood and did so with a casual disregard for the rights of His Lordship.

He didn't fancy the Wall and ran. It was better for everyone, including his mother's non-bastard children.

He washed up in the Free Cities after a disastrous stint as a galley crewman, and swore never to be used like that again. It was just as well that there were campaigns in the Disputed Lands afoot and the companies were hungry for bodies. While initially recruited to hold a spear, he managed to make his skills very evident in fighting for the Stormcrows once he had hands on a bow.

The career since then has been fighting in campaign after campaign, looting for gold, losing the money quickly and turning briefly to merchant caravan guard duty only to be bilked out of his pay on the first engagement, which led him right to vengeance and banditry, his typical peacetime practice when there is, surprisingly, no fight brewing in the disputed lands. He has made a reputation for himself as an archer, however, and that makes companies keen to hire him when there's a fight, though leery of keeping a bored, indolent and thieving Harry on the payroll -- garrison duty, keeping the peace and whatnot, is certainly asking the fox to guard the henhouse.

Skills:

Longbow archery, something a man has to be raised to in order to draw a true longbow. A childhood of forestry and an adulthood of horse thievery, caravan banditry and poaching have made him quite light on his feet. He would have made an exemplary ranger in the Night's Watch. He is not castle-trained to arms, however, so his hand-to-hand fighting involves knowing how to slip a knife under visors, or swinging an axe or hammer to defend himself. He is a skilled bowyer and fletcher and knows butchery well enough. He knows something of tanning hides and making leather, and of sewing as well, though he is no seamstress or cobbler. He can fix it, but there's no way he's making it from scratch.

Notably, Red Harry is not literate.

Equipment:

A longbow, spare strings, wax, case and all else that is needed to keep a bowstave in exemplary shape.
A poinard for stabbing through a visor.
A short sword, which also is good for stabbing.
Arrows, fletchings, glue and the like to make more arrows.
A breastplate, scarred and dented, battlefield salvage, but good steel.
A blue and white check-patterned soft cloth scarf wrapped around his neck, but that can be pulled up to shield his head and face. It keeps the breastplate from chafing.
Sallet, which once had a visor, also scarred and taken from the battlefield. There is a strap to hang it off a belt when not in use.
A well-made bracer, stitched with great care.
A good skinning knife.
A good carving knife.
Much-patched tunic.
Sailcloth with a hood and sleeves, pulled over when it rains.
A fine pair of boots, a bit scuffed but definite quality.
Waterskins, a sack and straps to carry on his back.
Some ancient civilization talisman on a leather string that's a good luck charm. It's worthless or he would have sold it.
Rope and some other climbing items. He's learned, the hard way, that it's good to have a way down a wall or out of a town that doesn't involve asking nicely at the gate.

I will say that I'm personally leaning toward beginning in the Free Cities (or more specifically in the Disputed Lands) as part of an established company - just not a canon one - before it gets decimated somehow (think of the Battle of Hattin, but with survivors I.E. the lot of us), leaving we merry few, we band of brothers, to go...somewhere; could be anywhere from reforming the company to simply heading over to Westeros (assuming we're not already there) and becoming bandits on the King's Road - that's something to work out once/if this gains some traction,I think.

That said I think the starting location is something that can be discussed, assuming we get enough folks on board. As for new or established, I was thinking more of a band of Sellswords, rather than an entire free company - hence the rout of the prologue - but again the size of the group and so on can all be hashed out in the event of this taking off.

If you do have any suggestions of your own, do feel free to put them forth at any point.

I'm down with that survivors of a rout storyline and am good with wherever it is going to be set. My character, quite frankly, isn't a 'stand and die for some nobleman' type as it is, so this all fits as far as I am concerned.

A band looking to perhaps stake into a larger company makes sense.

Edit: Also makes sense that any company looking to campaign in Westeros will hire experienced hands in anticipation of that. It would make sense that companies aren't going to be fully staffed until comes time to fight a war, after all.

Longtime user just getting back into the swing here and looking for some chat, a little collaboration and some fun writing with new faces.

Let's face it, I've been here a long time, I know a bunch of people here but a lot of them seem to be not RPing, which means that I have to run into some new people.

I'm mostly marketing this to the odd random and interesting person that might be checking these interest checks the way I sometimes do without posting an actual check. Some of you are old hands, some of you are brand new.

Baggage tldr

After years of slogging it out in kitchens and doing things not really related to having a college (university to the non-Americans) degree, I finally have one of those cushy desk jobs. Sometimes, life gets crowded, but I have been working on a couple 1x1's for a minute and have learned to just focus on those and not group RP's. I collaborate best with similarly busy people where we don't get bent out of shape over silence for a period. I've also learned to just be up front if an idea is only lukewarm for me, so I don't leave someone hanging. Note: As of right now, I'm proud to say that I'm actually caught up on the RP's I should be writing.

Also, since this is about baggage. I'm a former mod here. I resigned, and I'm mostly active socially with relics from the late 2000's who still lurk here. I still absolutely collaborate with new partners, but I am no longer worrying about administrative matters on the Guild so long as I can RP in peace.

Honestly, I'm versatile. For amusement, I often like to cross genres and find ways to blend elements of a given genre into something else. I think a plot is more important than a genre in a lot of ways to me. I enjoy the thrill of collaboration and combining perspectives.

I'm not very good at fandoms for the most part, though I draw liberally from inspirations and try to make something out of that. Sometimes I'll venture into something off the beaten path (including high school) though I like RP's that try out different perspectives and unusual twists. I'm into self-improvement as a writer, so I like to constantly shift my gears. I love a good conversation about where we are channeling our muse from on a given piece of writing, because I think inspirations are important, but they can also come from all sorts of places.

I adhere to the site rules that are posted and we can negotiate and converse about the rest. I'm sure you're breathing easy, because I can't count the number of times I say, "okay, looks good" and then WHAM -- a huge long list of rules.

Oh, and when PM'ing, please post a writing sample, list of references, your favorite doughnut flavor and what you put in your coffee. You will be judged harshly upon this basis. No, seriously, don't do that. These days, I look for like a good concept sentence, similar to a hypothesis, for a character idea. I have a wide range of interests and if you want me to try a different plot, I will certainly consider the plot. If it strikes a chord of creativity for me, I'll be happy to work with you on it. Yeah, though I think we're looking at more advanced than that, seeing as we're in cybernetic mod territory, but drone warfare and other technologies in that game series are definitely on the table here.

I'm open to speculation and creativity in this regard. This should have a real "Syndicate" type vibe to it.
