“Elenore makes all the final decisions. I have no idea who nominated her. I didn’t know until she was here.” Richard sounds a little less coherent the more he talks. George looks down at him with concern on his face.

“Maybe, we should go to your room, Richard,” George suggests.

“Oh, hmm. My understanding is that anything with tech in the house basically just goes through Leda at this point. No one else really knows technology. You’ll have to ask her,” Juliane answered Sam’s question, smiling at him.

“Thank you, Juliane. We’ll let you get back to work,” Ralph said. He caught Rhi’s look and glanced over at Richard. He seemed... distraught. He blinked. A little concerned. Had he not known, and Millicent had told him? Was he having a breakdown?

“Uh, I noticed Leda is basically always in that corner seat in the bar. Let’s go talk to her, I suppose.” He didn’t think they needed to get involved in what was going on with Richard. There would be too many cooks if they did. But he wouldn’t stop Rhi or Sam if they wanted to find out what was going on.

Finley shot Franklin a pouting look. “But blood was involved. I know blood. I could have possibly told you who the blood belonged to.” Finley’s type of fae was particularly good at blood magic. They could ride the blood and see memories and gain some power from the blood they consumed. Finley knew there were dangers in riding the blood of someone who had died. If they were not careful and skilled, they could follow the person right into their death.

A shiver of... fear... went through Finley. They watched Jake, who was suddenly a lot more interesting to them. They had not ‘written him off,’ but they had not paid him much heed. Their core tightened, and Finley very much wanted to get to know Jake more... intimately.

When Finley next spoke, they were answering Jake, their attention fully on him. Their voice low as they answered his question. “I am not skilled in the magic of life and death. I have heard stories of such things happening, so it is not impossible. However, it is a very dangerous road to walk. That question is something Constance and Franklin may be able to answer.”

“I’ve never tried to bring someone back from the dead. I don’t know if I could.” This was why she had to hope that the man in the statue was alive in there. That she could transmute him back to flesh and that he would still be alive. Hopefully, he had been in a stasis and not aware of time and the world, leaving him behind. If he was, he was likely insane. But that was a problem for later. For now, they had to focus on the situation in front of them.

Finley continued to lead the group through twists and turns, deeper into the dungeon. They stopped, suddenly staring at a wall, at a dead end. They were frowning, looking at the wall intently.

“What is wrong?” Connie asked. She looked around, trying to see where Finley was leading them. It seemed that this was a dead end. There were no doors or anything that could take them further. She shone her flashlight on the wall that Finley was staring down.

“The blood is here.” They pointed at the stone wall before stepping forward and touching it. Connie knew that Finley’s magic was not just blood-based; they could also do illusions. She wondered if they thought that the wall was an illusion, covering whatever bloody scene was waiting for them on the other side. Finley’s hand was pressed against it. So if they thought it was an illusion, it was an exceptional one.

“What do you mean?” Connie asked.

“The blood I followed, the smell of it, is strongest here. In the wall,” Finley responded without looking back. “Perhaps Rohan or Barty will be able to figure out the trick to the wall. I have led us here.”

Ben leaned into Chase’s embrace. He loved how it felt. It was comforting, and now that the tea was ready, he could already feel his nerves calming down. He sipped. It was too hot, but the heat of it helped as it slipped through him. He sighed, muscles releasing some of the tension he had been carrying since running into Danni and everything that had happened after that.

It was also relieving that whatever had happened to Danni and April, they were both okay. Danni chatted and ended the stream abruptly, screaming about Luna Snow. Ben didn’t really listen to that type of music, but she was impossible not to know.

“I don’t know about everyone else, but Danni wants to be your friend. I certainly won’t say the others are my friends. I don’t know anyone here yet, other than Danni. None of the other friendships matter to me. I only care if you’re my friend, and if Danni is my friend.”

Ben did catch that Chase corrected himself. He smiled and kissed his cheek. “Here have your tea.” He handed over his mug.

“Uh, I don’t think you should strap knives to your hands. But maybe sometime we can go to an empty ice rink and do a sword fight on the ice.” Andy was already getting used to being unreasonably durable. She hadn’t fully tested how durable she was.

Andy thought about Gideon’s second question. She remembered vague things about the Olympics when she was little. She scrunched up her nose. “I remember, I think 2016, Michael Phelps. Swimming. He might have done diving too. But he definitely did swim. There are two, right? Winter and Summer. The 2016 was a summer olympics. I don’t remember watching any winter ones. Those are the ones with ice skating. I don’t remember any shooting ones. We should have a watch party.”

The text back from April was quick but weird. Broke what? She sighed. God, she hated texting. It did not get across anything. Were they hurt? Did James need to be called? She texted back.

“I have no issues with any one who wants to join coming along,” Connie said. Her response was primarily to Cassie, but since she wasn’t the only one interested in joining it didn’t entirely matter. Cassie had asked though.

Connie’s attention then turned to Willow. “Of course.” It would be ridiculous to keep from Willow, her roommate, if the head belonged to Pancho. The three of them were roommates. If this was a potential threat, Willow needed to know. “I’d be happy to help later, too,” she confirmed.

Connie attempted to keep her annoyance at Barty to herself. The pair of them could get along, but it was always like this. A little snippy. She ignored most of what he said. “It is as if you think I haven’t been working on the problem all day.” She wanted to say more. Wanted to call him an ass, she was very proud of herself for not saying any of that.

She started walking. Down into the dungeons. Connie had asked Finley specifically because of two reasons. First, Finley had told Connie that they owed her a favor for her assistance when Finley first started attending the school. Second, because it skirted the issue of Barty. She found some amusement in him still deciding to join.

As the darkness grew, Connie removed from her bag a flashlight and flicked it on. “I almost stopped carrying this. Glad I still have it. As for what is down here. Generally nothing good. I remember some years ago coming down here on a dare with a couple of others. We heard some weird noises, and definitely got chased by something. Some students use the space for doing unauthorized experiments. The space is highly magical and liminal in nature. Too bad I don’t also have some rope.” She didn’t elaborate on why she carried it in the first place, or what may have driven her desire to remove it from her person. She shined the flashlight first one way and then the other. Connie almost asked if Barty happened to carry rope with him, but she did not. Connie frowned and considered shifting herself into a Bloodhound. Her knowledge of dogs was not as strong as her knowledge of birds. She should spend some time studying the anatomy of a dog that could be useful in such situations.

“Finley, Dysphoria, which way should we go?” Connie was proud of herself. Her voice didn’t shake and stayed a normal tone, it didn’t go into a whisper despite feeling that was the appropriate thing to do at this point.

Finley was a little sad that Nicholas and Callaghan were not joining for the adventure into the dungeons. Most of the others would be joining too. The sweet little moth was not one of them, tragic. At least Baty was joining. Though, Barty seemed particularly irritated with Constance at the moment so he was surprised.

They followed Constance as the young woman walked to the dungeons. They went down stairs and just as Finley was about to consider making light with their illusions Constance turned on an electric torch. It was bright, but limited, only illuminating in the direction it was being pointed in. Finley pulled some of their nature detritus out and snapped one of the sticks. Light glowed and lifted into the air. Several small balls spread out around them providing more illumination.

Constance's question about direction caused Finley to pause and sniff at the air. They looked at Frankie and Jake in turn, stepping close into personal space and breathing deeply. Finley grinned at them both.

“Oh you two have been playing indeed. Delightful” Their smile was absolutely feral, and they took another long wiff of them both. “Delicious.”

Finley sighed and looked at Constance, before saying, “The smell of blood is heavy here, more is that way.” They pointed down the hall and started walking leading the way. Their illusion lights following them.

“Ooooh, playing with blood? And they did not invite us? How ru-” Dysphoria's teasing fell away as their tongue flickered out. They cocked their head and swiveled between Frankie and Jake. “Did you two play here? The blood further down smells like the blood you are soaked in. Did you hunt? Did you chase something into this strange place beneath the ground and devour it? Darling, can we do this? It sounds very fun.”

Finley clicked their tongue. “I will forgive Jake as he does not know us, but Franklin, you should know better than to have a party with blood without me. Yes, my dearest, that does sound fun. We shall have to arrange that.” They sighed wistfully, their fingers on one hand intertwined with a tendril.

The tendril traced the edges of Finley's fingernail. “Yes, we shall have the science boy find us something. Something we can chase, something we can taste, something yummy with its heart still beating when our fangs break flesh.” Dysphoria cooed, shivering with the excitement of a future hunt. “But what did you play with? What did you two hunt?”

Ben watched the screen in abject horror. Suddenly, very glad he wasn’t outside watching this in real life. “GO!” he shouted. But Chase didn’t have time to go. He did at least cover the camera, so when Danni and April crashed to the ground, it wouldn’t be spread all over the internet. Somehow, though, they came out of it all right. Ben’s heart was racing.

“Next time, just tell me you’re going. You do not need to wait for me to give you permission to go save our friends.” The water beeped. Ben stood up and started the ritual of making tea. He set up his new bug-themed cup and Chase’s mug. Poured the water and added the bags of Earl Grey tea. Ben only really liked two teas - Earl Grey and English breakfast. His hands did shake a bit. Today was too much. But at least he could hear Danni talking. They were alive.

“As long as we don’t get into another detention. Want to go ice skating? You get to strap blades to your feet.” She held up her skates to show them off. Andy was a little worried that Gideon was that chill about going blind. Maybe she’d have to look into what caused light sensitivity. She mentally added it to the list of things about Gideon that she was worried about.

Andy led the way back out of the dorm building; she used the elevator. Back outside, she took a look around, assessing what might have happened during the time she had been distracted. It at least wasn’t as bad as that scene from Community that became a meme forever ago. There was some chaos. She could hear Danni yelling, but she wasn’t sure where he was or what he was even saying. She sighed. Apparently, she had missed something again. Andy was sorely tempted to just go to the ice rink still and ignore whatever other nonsense was brewing.

“Sounds like a plan. I’ll see you at the party.” She smiled and winked. As Sam left, she settled back into her seat and finished her meal.

“I didn’t invite her here. I didn’t. I don’t know who put her name in. She earned it; Elenore wouldn’t have sent the invite if she didn’t believe in the person. But I heard what she was doing.” He had leaned slightly into George. The two looked awkward. They had never embraced in such a way before. “Renee, though... I didn’t know, not until last night. I had lost touch with her mother. I didn’t even know about Renee.” He started to sob.

The staff’s attention, especially Felix's, was on Richard. Juliane’s attention flickered, but she focused back on Rhi and Ralph. Felix went over to Richard’s side, kneeling and checking him over slightly. He was by no means a doctor, but he had been around as the family aged over the years and knew enough to keep an eye on.

“He never hired Aurélia or me personally. No one else here was hired like us. Everyone else is full-time regular staff, except for maybe Aziza, the sous chef. But Lawrence recognized our photos from our profiles. I think that even though it seems to be an accident that someone knew. I don’t know who, though.”

Juliane smiled as Sam joined them. “Here, I’ll take the dishes.” She held out her hands for the dirty dishes. Ralph had finished his meal too and held it up to see if Juliane wanted it too. She nodded, taking it.

“Do you have any guesses for who might have the website other than Lawrence?” This weird hiring accident sounded... strange. Who would accidentally hire an escort for a maid? That website would have to be very misleading for someone to do that. He frowned as he tried to figure it out. He had met almost everyone of the La Lunes, and he thought he had met all of the staff, but apparently not. Was the staff a danger? Maybe someone was a paid assassin?

Juliane shrugged. “Sorry. I don’t.” She took the dishes, joining them with the others that the other staff had been gathering up. “I should start working again. I suppose good luck. I’m a little freaked out, and Aurélia is very freaked out. She doesn’t even want to leave the kitchen.”

The day became hotter, and the sun marched across the sky. The water became more enticing for those who wanted to cool off. The sounds of Dobbs fixing the roof had resumed, and he would finish that cabin during these couple of hours.

Em spent some more time with Marco helping with the inventory. She drank a glass of water before heading out, giving him one more kiss. “I’ll take your bag to the cabin too.”

She picked a bed in the cabin. The water called to her, so she changed quickly into a swimsuit before heading to the water. If she saw anyone on the way there, she waved. The water itself was cooler than she expected it would be, causing her to shiver. She dived into it quickly, though. Not wanting to delay the inevitable.

“Unfortunate,” Finley said in response to Nicholas informing them that hunting did not seem to be something that the staff here did. Maybe if Finley did some hunting for some animals, the kitchens would still use it? It could be a good diversion.

Finley enjoyed the kiss that Dysphoria gave them in return. They reveled in it for a moment. Part of them wished they were back in their room. The food was tasty, but was it worth leaving their alone time? They were not fully convinced. Their attention was drawn to the conversation Dysphoria was having with Callaghan and one of the new people. What was a mani-pedi? If it was something that their Dewdrop would enjoy, they would learn it for them.

Two underclassmen sitting near them left, and as they did, some birds appeared. These birds landed on Rohan. Interesting. Were they familiars of his?

“Ohhh, fantastic. We look forward to this mani-pedi. We will get very good at them,” Finley declared.

“Oh, Barty, if only you had it in heart to help your covenmate who is missing without requiring someone else to ask you to do so,” Connie said. Her voice started with a sarcastic tone, but slowly shifted into annoyance.

“In the sense that Pancho is also my roommate and our room got an invite, he was invited. As I said, I left for Haven and did not see him again.”

Connie frowned as Serena and Betty left. She shot Barty a glare, blaming him for their departure. Great, her one lead. She supposed she’d just have to go down into the dungeons to try to find out more. This was not something she wanted to do alone. She also had no desire to ask Barty to help her. Maybe Rohan and his new bird friends would join her. Or... Finley did owe her a favor. Having Dysphoria and Finley would make her feel safer. She wasn’t sure if Finely and Dysphoria could help, but at least their presence would secure her against anything that might try to harm her in the dungeons. She finished her food, avoiding the ‘beef’, and slid her untouched beef onto Barty’s plate.

“Finley, Dysphoria, would the two of you do me the favor of joining me in the dungeon to investigate this mysterious head? I only care enough to identify if it is my wayward roommate.”

Finley looked up at Constance. Constance was owed a favor, and they knew that the emphasis was intentional. They smiled and rose. “I would be delighted to.”

“Two cups of tea, coming right up. Do you have a cup too?” He asked. The pot was full of water and starting to warm up. He watched his phone as Danni and April took off on their inner tube.

He winced. Before they fell, he could take a guess at how much they were going to get hurt. They’d probably be calling up... which one was it of their dads? Pops. They’d probably be calling up Pops for a healing. Ben wasn’t sure what the school had in the way of a nurse or doctor. It seemed like the type of school that should have a powerful healer on-site, so maybe they wouldn’t have to.

Ben snuggled up against Chase. “I don’t know about speed records, but they might get one for air time.”

Andy’s phone chirped, and she looked at the message. It took her a moment to understand, but she was getting more used to Leah’s texting. She typed back her response, plopping on her bed while Gideon got her things.

“Leah has healing runes now if you want to see if she’ll heal your eyes.” Andy wondered if it would help with the light sensitivity issue, too, but she doubted it. “Hmm, I don’t think you’ll need it, but can’t hurt to have it.” She gave a slight shrug. She believed in being ready for a fight.

“I am definitely not a swamp creature, Aster. You know they say you should try a new food three times before deciding if you like it or not,” she suggested, smiling. The conversation about Zeke and Demi caused her to laugh. New relationships were so cute. Nancy, looking uncomfortable, wasn’t missed by her, and she was tempted to make a rule for everyone not to talk about sex around her. However, she knew that wouldn’t last long. It was unfortunate that she was uncomfortable around the subject. She’d at least keep her comments about it to a minimum around her.

Dobbs came into the kitchen. He looked around at the gathered group. “Are you all getting work done?”

“Yes, Dobbs. I cleared off most of a trail. I’ll head back after I put calories into me.” She rolled her eyes at the man. She did want to go for a dip. If he was going to be like this the whole week, she might do a night swim instead. As long as she didn’t go alone, that would be fine. Mmm, skinny dipping with Marco could be a lot of fun. She smiled at Marco, her eyes sparkling with desire.

Dobbs grunted, seeming satisfied with that. He didn’t really care what they did, as long as actual work was done. He couldn’t get everything done in time. The camp’s agreement that brought in the volunteers wasn’t perfect. He’d rather have more people to get more done. He wished that all the staff came early. He couldn’t have everything he wished for, and he was just a maintenance guy in a job he didn’t care for. He served himself some food.

Em finished her lunch quickly. Drinking down all the water in the cup. She was very thirsty after the labor she had been doing. Sitting inside the cooler building was nice, and she didn’t particularly want to go outside yet. Maybe she’d help Marco clean up again.
