The rest of the night was a blur for Roger after the cafeteria incident. The lion had shown back up and introduced himself as Vance, giving him his business card before departing. Roger spent a few more minutes outside, the cold helping calm his quickened pulse. Once he was sufficiently calm, Roger made his way to his dorm room, crashing onto his bed. For Roger it seemed that he was laying there for hours trying to sleep, but the truth was that the darkness took him quickly.

Light returned to Roger’s eyes as the annoying twang of a country song sung by a rabbit lamenting the loss of his burrow. The first thought that Roger had that morning was to switch the radio station, as he was never really into country. Glancing over at the time, Roger found that it was still early, and remembered that he didn’t have any morning classes today luckily. Roger rolled out of bed, realizing that he was still wearing the same clothes he put on yesterday. Figuring that he should clean himself up, Roger grabbed a towel and made his way to his dorm’s showers.

Despite most capybaras loving being in the water, Roger didn’t like getting wet. Between that and having a communal showers, Roger tried to minimize his time in there. Once he decided he was clean, Roger quickly dried off and went back to his room, clad only in a large towel. Once more in his room, Roger changed into a pair of blue jeans, grey sneakers, and a long sleeved shirt with a zombie on it covered with a red winter coat. As Roger put his glasses on, Roger saw Vance’s card on his nightstand. Picking it up, Roger wondered if he should message him. But Roger decided against it, as he didn’t want to seem like a creep. While Roger wanted to make friends at school, he also wanted to be smart about it.

Putting the card into his wallet, Roger left his room and started toward the cafeteria to get breakfast. After walking for about thirty seconds Roger remembered what he and Vance had done last night. Recalling the look on the buffalo’s face after getting splatted with food, Roger figured that he probably shouldn’t show his face around the cafeteria for a while, so that people would forget about what happened. Instead, Roger exited his dorm before crossing the street and walking into Dingo Donuts, a coffee shop. While positioned close to the university, most students still avoided Dingo Donuts as the food had less variety and was generally poorer in quality to the school cafeteria. But Roger was desperate to get breakfast as he approached the counter, ordering a coffee and a fruit filled donut. Once getting his order, Roger sat at a booth in the corner, before checking his phone and seeing that he still had quite a while before class started.

Lukas stands at 5’9’’ with a slim but muscular build. He has tanned skin that is blemished by several scars from past battle. He has dark, shoulder length hair that is complimented by deep, dark brown eyes. He tends to wear colourful clothing, with many shirts with various designs, and a wide array of pants types and shoes. When dressed as Garnet, Lukas wears red and black body armour, with a crimson domino mask concealing his identity.

Personality:

Lukas was initially a loner, preferring his own thoughts to talking with others. However that has changed in recent years as Lukas gained his mutant powers, greatly increasing his confidence. Lukas can be quite idealistic, truly believing in heroics and mutant rights. He is willing to fight completely for his beliefs, and would have a hard time being changed from them. Around others Lukas is friendly, seemingly a nice guy with no major flaws. But while in his Garnet persona, Lukas is fierce, with a cruel wit as he mocks his opponents.

Powers/Abilities:

Lukas has the mutant power of gemstone generation. By focusing Lukas is able to secrete a liquid that quickly transforms into a red gemstone. Lukas has two main uses of this power, first he can coat his body in gemstones to act as a set of armour, or two, fire the stones as projectiles. Once created the gemstones will exist for roughly ten minutes before disintegrating. Lukas can also manually reabsorb the gemstones, which helps alleviate some of the fatigue he gets from creating the gemstones. While durable, the gemstones are not invulnerable, with super-strength, blasts, or other powerful forces being able to shatter it.

Skills:

While in school Lukas excelled at biology, finding it the best way to learn about his mutation. From that he has also learnt first aid. Years of being a hero has resulted in him being a pretty good brawler, and practise with his powers has made him a sharpshooter with his gemstones.

History:

Lukas was born in Toronto, Canada, the third child of the Serrano family. Growing up, Lukas was mostly raised by his twin older sisters Julie and Jane, as his parents both worked very busy jobs. For most of his younger years, Lukas mostly hung out with his siblings, having trouble making friends with others. But as his sisters got older and had more of a social life, Lukas was forced to hang out with other people. For a while Lukas was quite lonely, that was until he met Alex. Like Lukas, Alex was a bit of a loner, preferring stories to real interactions. Lukas and Alex quickly became close, sharing a love for the superheroes who had began to appear.

The two quickly became fans of Alpha Flight, Canada’s premier hero team. This also was the dawn of Lukas’s sexuality as he became enamoured with team member Northstar. For over a year, Lukas dreamt of being a hero, until one day when his mutant powers awakened when a red gemstone formed in his hand. Initially keeping it a secret, Lukas decided to confide in Alex. They confided at the same time that they too were a mutant. Discovering that Alex had similar gemstone generation powers, they decided to become heroes together.

Taking the names Garnet and Opal, after their birthstones, Lukas and Alex began patrolling the streets. For a few months they managed to fight some crime, making a small presence online. However this new found attention attracted the gaze of the Purifiers, an anti-mutant hate group. They managed to track down Alex, attacking them when their powers weren’t active. The attack left Alex in a coma, and Lukas full of rage.

Lukas hunted down the Purifiers, tracking them to their headquarters. He then attacked them, only for another group of mutants to appear. They were revealed to be Magneto and his Brotherhood, and they beat the Purifiers severely. Following the fight Magneto offered Lukas a place on his team. Lukas agreed, taking the mutant name Shard. Lukas then left Toronto, travelling the world with Magneto.

For about a year Lukas worked as a mutant terrorist under Magneto, believing in his cause. However, that came to an end when Magneto disappeared, control of the Brotherhood going to Mastermind. Lukas immediately didn’t like the new leadership, so he left the Brotherhood and returned to Toronto, going back to a normal life. It was then that he discovered that Alex had died.

Initially distraught, Lukas decided to honour his friend’s memory by becoming Garnet again. Once again patrolling Toronto, Lukas tried to join Alpha Flight, only to learn that they had disbanded. So Lukas continued defending his hometown, that was until he was attacked by mercenaries targeting former Brotherhood members. He was rescued by Quicksilver, another former member of the Brotherhood, and together the two fought off the mercenaries. After the fight Quicksilver expressed his respect for what Lukas does. To that end, Quicksilver would end up sponsoring Lukas to join the Avengers as part of the NEO Initiative.

Ten years ago the world changed. People began to exhibit strange powers, using them for good and evil. Mutants became public knowledge, the Spider-Man was caught on film, and Captain America turned out to be just not a piece of propaganda. To deal with this influx of powered individuals, the UN made public knowledge the existence of SHIELD, a global peacekeeping organization. With the help of SHIELD, various heroes came together and formed teams, like the Fantastic Four, X-Men, and Avengers.

For several years the battle between good and evil continued as usual, that was until a major revelation occurred. The Avengers discovered that SHIELD was secretly being controlled by HYDRA, a terrorist organization that dated back to World War Two. Now revealed, HYDRA decided to advance their plans, using the forces of SHIELD to attack most major government. With the combined power of several hero teams, HYDRA was defeated, with most of its leadership arrested. In the wake of this incident, the UN dissolved SHIELD, leaving the world without dedicated peace keepers.

With SHIELD gone, many criminal and terrorist groups began to expand. This would continue for several months until Nick Fury, the former head of SHIELD, contacted Captain America, the team leader of the Avengers. He suggested having the Avengers step up as the defender of the world, to which Cap eventually agreed. Thus they launched the NEO Initiative. All former and reserve members of the Avengers were called to rejoin the team, as were many former SHIELD technical staff and agents.

The main purpose of the NEO Initiative was to recruit new heroes, with the current members of the Avengers encouraged to sponsor a new hero. These new heroes would be based in Avengers Mansion New York on a probationary basis. They would be assigned missions to prove that they could be actual Avengers.

Timeline

1943: Project Rebirth creates Captain America, who quickly becomes a piece of propaganda.
1945: Captain America is MIA after destroying a HYDRA base in the Arctic.
1948: SHIELD is formed to prevent another world war.
1963: Mutants first start to appear.
1992: Mutants Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr first meet.
1998: Young scientist Bruce Banner is exposed to Gamma energy, becoming the Hulk.
2000: Thor comes to Earth to celebrate the new millennium, only to get into a fight with the Hulk.
2005: Charles Xavier opens the Xavier Institute for the Gifted, a school to help mutants.
2006: The Richards space mission is bombard with cosmic energy, transforming them into the Fantastic Four.
2009: Dr. Hank Pym discovers the Pym Particle.
2010: Several graduates of the Xavier Institute form the X-Men, a hero team that helps mutants.
2011: Spider-Man first appears in New York, becoming the first public superhero. Magneto forms the Brotherhood of Mutants.
2012: The Fantastic Four make their first public appearance, defeating a Skrull raiding party. The existence of SHIELD is admitted to by the UN Security Council.
2013: After a mass breakout of super-villains, Thor, Iron Man, Hulk, Ant-Man, and the Wasp team up as the Avengers to recapture them. The X-Men also become public after a heavily videoed fight with the Brotherhood of Mutants hits the internet.
2014: Captain America is found frozen in ice. He then joins the Avengers alongside many other new members as the team grows rapidly. The Avengers are put to the test when an AI named Ultron tries to end the world.
2015: The world discovers the existence of Atillan, an Inhuman city on the Moon. Mutant hunting robots called Sentinels are first created.
2016: The Avengers and X-Men fight over what to do with the Phoenix Force when it manifests itself on Earth. In the end the Phoenix host Jean Grey is seemingly killed and the Phoenix sealed away.
2018: The Fantastic Four create the Future Foundation, a think tank of the world’s smartest people with the goal of improving the world.
2020: It is discovered that SHIELD was secretly controlled by HYDRA. The Avengers defeat HYDRA, and SHIELD is disbanded.
2021: The Avengers start the NEO Initiative.

Lowell also sprouts mechanical wings that glow with a blue energy that allows for flight. Two gauntlets also form on his hands, also glowing with blue energy. Lowell can at any time deactivate the Dragonheart, causing all the nano-machines to instantly break down and return to the orb.

The Dragonheart has a basic AI built into it, one that can telepathically communicate with Lowell, explaining things and offering advice. Lowell has the ability to tell the Dragonheart to activate, triggering a flood of nano-machines to leave the device and cover Lowell’s body in a layer of armour. This armour is super durable and grants super strength to Lowell. The nano-machines also create wings, which when powered by the blue energy flowing through it allows for flight in any environment. A pair of power gauntlets are also formed, which allow to Lowell to fire the blue energy or create a temporary shield. As a last resort Lowell can shoot Dragonfire, a powerful beam of energy that originates from the core of the Dragonheart itself. While devastatingly powerful, it takes up a lot of the energy of the Dragonheart and could result in it shutting down.

Personality:

Lowell usually comes off as a nice guy, someone pleasant to be around. He rarely takes things too seriously and is always down to try new things. However, he is also not the most reliable guy, and many who know him long enough know that not to put too much faith in him. While he has made efforts to try and improve himself, Lowell is not really sure how and often falls back on the same negative behaviours.

While in his Dragoon alter-ego, Lowell is still a fun loving guy who is always ready to make a joke. Despite the danger involved, Lowell views being a hero as a fun hobby. As such he tends not to pay too much attention to the safety of others, while being confident that he is safe in his armour.

History:

In ancient times there existed a kingdom on Earth called Hyporia. A jewel of society among the primitive people of the planet, Hyporia attracted the attention of rival alien races, the Rulgi and the Ophideus. The Rulgi experimented on the natives of Hyporia, granting them many super-powers. In turn the Ophideus created the Dragonhearts, artifacts that combined with the humans and gave them battle armour. It wasn’t long until the two sides clashed, the battle destroying all of Hyporia. In the end all the Dragonhearts were seemingly destroyed, save one that remained hidden in the ruins. The surviving empowered of Hyporia left for other lands, fading into myth. Eventually the Rulgi and Ophideus departed Earth, leaving almost no trace that they were ever there.

Fast forward to modern day and Lowell George is born, son of two novelists living in Second City. Lowell was the younger son of the family, his brother Darren born four years before. Growing up Lowell and Darren were very close, sharing many interests such as movies, martial arts, and food. However it would soon become apparent that Darren was the high achiever, while Lowell just coasted by. Darren would make the honour roll and write for the school paper, while Lowell would do the bare minimum academically and maybe try out for a sports team. Lowell soon came to believe that his parents valued Darren more than him, causing him to have a more strained relationship with his brother.

Eventually, Lowell graduated from high school, unsure of what to do next. He had decided to take a year off before applying for college, wanting to explore the world. For a while he considered becoming a novelist like his parents, but found that he didn’t have the drive to write. So he found a job at a grocery store, working for minimum wage. This didn’t help with how Lowell viewed himself in relation to others. Knowing that his older brother was working on a master’s degree in history at Second City University, Lowell tried to get interested in studies as well. To that end he decided to go to a local museum as they had an exhibit on recently found relics from the ruins of Hyporia.

While Lowell checked out the exhibit, the museum was attacked by a gang of mercenaries looking to loot the exhibition. In the excitement of the attack, Lowell bumped into an exhibit, causing an orb to fall toward him. When the orb touched Lowell it combined with him, explaining that it was a Dragonheart. With the help of the built in AI, Lowell transformed into a battle armour and was able to fight off the mercenaries. Keeping the Dragonheart a secret, Lowell decided to try and see if being a superhero was his calling. So by day he worked at the grocery store, but by night he defended Second City as the Dragoon.
