Aether Abilities

Marina’s aether abilities are enhanced by the moon. Specifically, she specializes in the manipulation of the element of water.

Marina learned to tap into her aether abilities when she was but a small child, though she was no prodigal genius. Everything she has achieved has been done with a large quantity of hard work and a small degree of talent. This hard work was supplemented by Marina’s attendance as a student of the Imperial Fleet Academy based in proximity to the imperial capital. Though despite having a well-trained connection to her aether sign, Marina still tends to struggle regarding her focus and nerve. But the moon has blessed the purple-haired young adult nonetheless, enhancing Marina’s abilities as a diver and combatant; she envies those who are talented artificers and aether engineers given that she lacks the patience for such things.

Marina as an aether user can be aptly described as a utility specialist, which in short means that most of Marina’s combat prowess is done practically rather than magically. Aether exists to enhance Marina’s skills as a diver and adventurer, though in a clutch situation she can be pushed to using her more esoteric abilities that are better suited to combat. Some common aspects and techniques she is prone to utilizing include the following:

  • Fysallidakinesis: Marina tends to use Fysallidakinesis in combination with her hydrokinetic barriers. It’s good to be able to breathe underwater, especially if your diving gear isn’t with you or is compromised.

  • Hydrokinetic Barriers: Marina’s primary focus when it comes to her aether abilities is the creation of a “hard” water fields that can be used as shields, deep dive barriers, and containment fields.

  • Pressure Manipulation: Manipulating the water pressure around her can aid Marina when she is surrounded by pirates, raiders, or other sorts of antagonists. Requires focus and can exhaust Marina quickly if she’s not careful.

  • Purification: In certain situations Marina can focus on purifying any form of liquid she comes into contact with. She’s had to use this in certain parts of the ocean where ancient corruption magic has tainted the water to the point it is too dangerous to swim in.

  • Regenerative Water: The most difficult aether technique that Marina knows and probably the most valuable when things look the most dark. Similar to her purification techniques, but allowing to apply a transformative water to another person to reinforce their immune system and healing faculties.

Physical Description
Hovering in the 5’6” to 5’7” range, Trantascilia is relatively tall for a girl but there are certainly taller women out in the world. Her hair is a dark blue, a fitting commonality for those with the blood of the Dalvcress running through their veins. Her lean, athletic body is good for her dexterous combat style, though she isn’t one to take hits very well. The advantage of being fast and athletic as opposed to hardy and strong, one could suppose. Her irises are yellow.

Her attire as a huntress is light, but not absent; a battle dress is common alongside her common vestige of metal hairbands on each side above her ears. The royal colors of black and gold are never absent from anything she wears.

Character Conceptualization
Prentalema is the oldest city in the world. It’s walls have survived centuries and nothing has ever broken them or the people inside. The Kimnothelis Dynasty has staked their claim in the cerulean city for the last decade, succeeding the elder Dalvcress Dynasty when the last surviving Dalvcress heirs, the twins Ihmo and Elrick Dalvcress were killed by the void during the Great War.

Essel Kimnothelis, the Patriarch of the Kimnothelis families was one of the first lords to step up with a claim to the Cerulean Throne, with blood through his great-grandmother connecting himself with the Dalvcress bloodline a short war of succession would occur. It is regarded as a mostly bloodless succession crisis, with every member of the conflict save a few serving in the royal conciliate.

Trantascilia was born during just a few minutes before the forsaken eclipse that preceded the void apocalypse, the granddaughter of Essel through his second eldest son, Kalenis. Some might suggest her birth was a foreboding omen in retrospect, but such claims would be laughed off as humorous banter by pretty much anyone. Still, Trantascilia’s armor was formed early and worn well.

The childhood in question was not one with much comfort. Her family were wealthy, but not gluttonous or greedy, and in an apocalypse many noble comforts had to be broken down so everyone had enough to comfortably live while the pyromancers fortified their hearths, the obelisk-like signal towers that would come to ward off the void. It would be the blue-haired girl’s perception that her family were the most righteous and noble in all of the land in the face of the void; if anyone could press the void back into oblivion it would be Prentisians bearing the Kimnothelis banners. Midnosians were oppressive theocratic warlords. Ldranti were cruel, overbearing conquerors. Scilari were weak albeit intelligent allies. Such things were facts, there was no room for heresay or challenges to her worldview.

As she grew older the void continued to gain power, toppling the weaker, smaller nations. She had joined the Knights Prilmarius to serve as every able-bodied man and woman had sworn to do. One could say she experienced pain and loss. The years between her succession to adulthood and then the call for volunteers to participate in occult experiments to destroy the void were many. Every single person she has loved and cherished died either fighting the void or having their souls collapse in on the ember placed within from the experiment. When she was offered to the sorcerers of Kethiline one might presume she expected to fall in the same fashion as the others, but that couldn’t have been further from the truth. She believed in herself. She had survived the void without a pyromancer’s ember, so why would she doubt that it was her right to live and thrive? Perhaps it was through her lack of self-doubt that she transcended her human shell, perhaps it was dumb luck.

It didn’t matter, there was work to be done.

Can hunters even defeat the void?

Or is it a twisted fairytale that we’ve constructed. Illuminous hope can do a lot of things and it is said that the strongest of humanity aren’t even really human anymore. This is all gossip, of course. Anything to combat the void, those wretched creatures from beyond the dimensional veil.

About Steal Away The Light

In conjunction with ideas presented by a friend of mine, I’ve been thinking on this one since the build-up to the Halloween Season.

Inspired by Code Vein, Bloodborne, Tales of Berseria, and a variety of other anime-related content this RP is an amalgamation of ideas of dark fantasy, adventure, and action-horror. Characters within the setting are survivors in an apocalyptic era on the planet Asyl.

Creatures known as the void have taken hold of much of the planet and created turmoil of which that has never been seen. The sun is eternally eclipsed and the cost of human lives has been collossal. These creatures are magical in nature and humans have tried their best to combat them. There are several kingdoms left on the world in their wake, though to some they seem to be mostly barely standing holdouts from a horde of creatures from origins unknown. Humans have come to utilize special magic that has a huge cost on the bearer in order to create warriors known as hunters to drive the creatures back and restore the light on the planet and make the world whole again.

Will your hunter succeed?
Surviving the Void

Before sorcerers from the Kethiline Order harnessed secret magic to turn humans into living weapons, humanity turned to the tools they knew to combat the Void. Sorcery and Steel.

Steel was useless alone as the Void took on many shapes and no matter how clean the strike, the creatures would always regenerate and heal, while only corpses piled up against their onslaught from humanity’s side of the struggle. In time, sorcerers who worshipped the flame—Pyromancers—would become key into combating the Void. It was a reality that was learned through heavy sacrifice, including one of the great kingdoms known to the world falling into the abyss. The eternal, agonizing eclipse that blocked out the sun gave the creatures full rein to molest the kingdoms of Asyl. It was simple math. The creatures fed off the darkness and themselves were completely absent of heat, so it became clear that only the Pyromancer’s flame could aid humanity’s plight.

Still, solitary pyromancers were rarely strong enough to combat the void and with the void encroaching on civilization like it had on their sister kingdom of Kelathaneia, the nobility and aristocrats hiding in the cities of olde made a decision. Giant obelisks known as hearthfires were constructed, to be fed by pyromancers to ward off the void from the great walls. Many feared this would be a war of attrition with favor to the monsters that wished to devour them.

With pyromancers being needed to tend to hearthfires solutions became dire. The four remaining great kingdoms sought to find alternatives. There weren’t enough pyromancers, especially ones who were strong enough to burn a voidling into nothing, to do both jobs. Some of the ideas other sorcerers, clerics, and scholars came up with were damning. Those who poured into forbidden magicks or plundered the vaults made to contain ancient cursed weapons were playing a dangerous game, but they needed answers to the void fast. Even with the hearthfires, they only had so much food they could produce and keep safe. It wasn’t enough. It was never enough. However, as years turned into decades an answer came to light after a long time of research. The sorcerer-monks of Kethiline had finally had a breakthrough with the first successful infusion of a pyromancer’s ember with the soul of a human being. It was a process that had been sworn to silence for years. A process to destroy the void while the pyromancers stood by to tend to the hearths. It was a necessary one, though the loss of human life, albeit mundane humans, was a saddening price. It was here they finally had a working theory on how to counteract the void’s ability to corrupt any living being it devoured. The price was transcending humans who were strong enough into living weapons, inhuman beings that could harness the power of a pyromancer’s ember to protect themselves as well as turn voidlings into ash.

It has been five years since Rimaeria Saldosius became what we now known as hunters of the void. There were two hundred others who have followed her since, and over two thousand more who were reduced to ash for trying to do so. The War against the Void will be won in due time. That is the hope.

Hunters of the Void

Hunters are necrotic human weapons that can harness power from the forbidden magicks that have not only infused their soul with a pyromancer’s ember but also sacrificed their humanity. They cannot age and in theory should not be able to die. The ember within them is as restorative as it is destructive, it will reform the hunter’s body if critical, fatal damage is assessed and burn out normal wounds passively. However, if an ember goes through this process too many times in relative succession it will burn out the hunter’s soul so it cannot be corrupted by the void.

A hunter lives in constant pain and ruin, the ember from within burning their insides in an eternal agony, to become one is as much of a curse as it is a boon.

The Kingdoms of Asyl

Many kingdoms have dotted the landscape and history of Asyl for centuries, however only a handful have survived. Some of them still bear the scars of the war that many believe drew the void to Asyl in the first place.

“Seems like we got a lot of ideas.” Rael said, not deciding to give any comforting words to the girl she had run into the sewers.

As far as she was concerned it was pointless. She was bad with those kind of things, save for once in a blue moon like back in the dungeon with Kalie. Not to mention, Graves had already seemed to give her the boost she needed all by his lonesome. Of course he did. A small tinge raised up into the Japanese girl’s brain before waving it off, focusing on the task at hand.

“Mr. Moneybags over here has us covered, at least.” She scoffed at Kazuki, but not in a cold way. It was an ironic remark, though, given who Rael was back in Japan. “Anyway, Benkei’s right. Can’t cower in our boots thinking Aaginim Part 2 is going to happen. World’s not going to adjust to us not being leeches if we keep sitting around. Don’t forget about world quests either. Not always a dungeon that needs doing.”
