"Fire and Gold in her eyes."

Khloe flinched at the sudden thud of the door crashing down on the frozen ground, she was beside the door at this point since she had been by the door the whole time. "Oh... Hey." Said Khloe as she waved her hand at Drake with her blue glowy hands, she seemed to be calming down which was good but it was still a bit startling at first. She didn't know how to react especially with the room now looking like a real winter wonderland for everyone which was not great for her at all. Khloe took a few steps to position herself to the middle of the room and took a deep breath.

"So uh... My hair's new... Yay?." Said Khloe with an uncomfortable smile. Though, right after she shook her head and immediately lost her cool (No pun intended.) "Who am I kidding!? What the hell even is happening!?" She exclaimed as she paced around the frozen floor, with each stomp of her foot building up more ice below her. She was pulling on her hair and going back and forth like crazy, she was hating every minute of this (even though her hair looked great in white).

"How can I even fix this?! I'm freaking the fuck out!" Khloe added to her loud complaints, she glanced over to the guy who got her out of here in the first place with the fire, and the girl who at least attempted to help with blonde hair. She continued to stomp around, the ice now up to her knees. "I-I can't handle this- I can't! T-Thi-This too much I cant- Ugh! This makes no sense whatsoever, this sucks, honestly." She added.

She turned to Drake and replied to little comment, "Yeah, Powers are cool, especially when you freeze an entire room and can't touch anything, yeah reaaaaaaal fun ain't it!?" She replied, she was obviously upset about the whole thing " And I doubt that the headmaster can help, not like he did anything during that whole fight in the courtyard yesterday, so I'll probably be stuck like this and freeze the entire state like how Elsa froze her fucking kingdom! Why did I decide to use that as a comparison! I'm so damn lame, what is wrong with me!?" Khloe continued, how would she calm down at this point.

Cleo D'Nile

Location: Girl's Dorm.
Interacting With: @Draven | @KatKook

Cleo watched on intently as Drake did his work on the door, so this was what he could do, the power of fire, seeing it in action was quite an awesome sight even if it was just to open a frozen door, all she could do was go invisible and even then it was not guaranteed. Cleo stayed at the ready with the extinguisher, especially after the sheepish look Drake had given her which in turn dent her confidence this would work.

Cleo couldn’t help though when Drake face planted the door and even snorted a little while refraining to have a big ass grin and giggling at him, it was as epic and her spectacular fail but it was still fun to see. The crack sound from the door snapped Cleo’s attention back to the door as it eventually open, dropping the extinguisher on the floor to went into the room only to get the shock of how dam cold it was, like man it was freezing as all hell.

Cleo couldn’t help but look around the room for a few moments, it was like the freaking north pole was in her room, everything frozen over. ‘Okay this totally awesome.’ She looked at Khloe for a moment. ‘So she is definitely an Ice Queen.’ She thought to herself as she listened to the now white haired girl? Was pacing back and forth freaking out, Cleo could’ve swore the girl was blonde yesterday, either way Cleo was digging the white.

So Khloe freaking out actually made Cleo concerned, as cold as she was she moved in closer to the centre of the room trying to get the girl’s attention but she just kept on rambling on and was in total freak-out mode, which in all honest Cleo would be to if in her position. “Um Khloe you need to calm down.” Cleo said trying to get through to the girl. But she was to upset, and the blonde was struggling to get through to her as she noticed the ice rising around her stomping and to the point of her knees!

‘Okay Cleo think, come on girl think... you need to calm her down, make her think of something else’ Cleo was in deep thought her concerned expression showing when she looked over at Drake and pointed out the raising ice. “Oh I know; I have another idea.” Cleo blurted out as once again she had another idea. Once more with her tongue partially sticking out of her mouth as if carefully stepped over the knee high ice wall. With that task done the tongue was no longer sticking out now, she was in close proximity to Khloe and it was time to put the icing on the cake. ‘This could either work or I become a popsicle in five seconds flat.' She then went fingers crossed motion at Drake before going in for the awesome plan.

“Khloe you need to stop, come on girl, please you need to calm down.” Cleo pleaded once more, but she was still pacing. “Ah to hell with it” within moments Cleo spun Khloe around and pulled her into full blown hug as she wrapped her arms around the girl. ‘Please don’t freeze, please don’t freeze me’ she thought eyes closed. Cleo continued cuddling her. “Come on girl, you can do this, concentrate and think of good thoughts, forget about what’s going on around you.” She whispered into the girl’s ear as she was still not letting go, at least Khloe felt warmer than even Cleo expected considering she was in a frozen room.

"Sometimes icy heart just needs warm smile."

Khloe continued to pace around, trying to figure out what she could do in this situation, there were already a million reports of mutants going crazy because they couldn't control their powers, and Khloe hated the thought of even being classified as one of those. Why? Why? Why!? Why!? Why?!?! carried on in her head as she felt the build up of ice on her sides.

But all of a sudden, Khloe was stopped in her tracks, arms were wrapped her around her... It was, Cleo, why? She had no idea, but the immediate thought of freezing her popped into her head "Cleo- No no no no, wait don't-" She feared she'd be responsible for it, she just shut her eyes and hoped everything was going to be okay. She really didn't want to hurt anyone or freeze anyone or even do something that might cause discomfort. She hoped and prayed, anxious about the whole situation.

She soon opened her eyes after a little while, Cleo was still wrapped around her, unfrozen. The the heavens for that! She thought, she glanced over to her hands and they were no longer glowing blue, she wished she could say the same for her hair but no, her hair remained white. It had been awhile since she had felt a warm hug, and it came from someone she just met the day before. She then slowly inched her hands towards her back to return the embrace with the constant thought of, Please don't freeze her. Please don't freeze her. Please don't freeze her. Over and over again.

She wrapped her arms around Cleo, and through some miracle, she didn't freeze her. What was it that this girl possessed that made neutralised Khloe's epidemic, whatever it was, Khloe was definitely grateful. She hugged the girl tighter as the biggest form of thanks. “Come on girl, you can do this, concentrate and think of good thoughts, forget about what’s going on around you.” She heard Cleo whisper in her ear, and Khloe just seemed to relax after that. "Thank you... " Khloe whispered back, resting her chin on the shorter girl's shoulder, she loved every second of this.

As the hug continued, the ice of the room started to peel off, it didn't really melt, but it seemed to just peel off the walls. It started to melt as it hit the ground, and water from all the melting ice seemed to not even damage much of the furniture. Tears then started to slowly ease their way out of Khloe's eyes as she snuggled into the girl's shoulder, she couldn't more thankful than she is now.

Drake “D” Edwards

Drake let the flames that engulfed his hands slowly extinguish as he looked on. Two women embracing in the center of the room, ice falling off the walls, puddles forming on the ground, and Drake with nipples that could cut glass at this point. It was friggin cold!

What the hell kind of Tuesday is this? Drake scratched at the back of his neck nervously. Everything was going to be soaked when all this was done. If the janitorial staff caught him here at the scene, they were bound to start a vendetta against him. This will be the second massive mess he'd been a party to in less than an hour.

"Well, uh, ladies," he said, backing out of the room and scanning the hallway for onlookers. "I'm glad everyone seems to be good (And I love what you did with your hair, by the way), but I'm just gonna, you know," he started side stepping once he cleared the doorway, swooping an arm down to pick up his soiled tank top from the ground, "get a shower and put on some clothes and try to figure out what the hell kind of turn my life is taking right now..." With that, he gave a nervous wave and started briskly walking back toward the lounge, making his way to the Summer's hall.

I wonder if Nik is still there, he thought as he continued his pace. As he passed through the lounge, his briefly glanced at the gathered faces, most of which were eating breakfast before starting their classes. He saw several he recognized. Aya was there, Sy, and then there was... Drake came to a complete stop for a second when his eyes fell upon Sally. They hadn't spoken, yet, this morning. Drake looked down at himself, still barely clothed and covered in filth. Now was not the time to make conversation. He pressed on, this time walking a little faster. He eventually made his way to the Summers Hall and, before long, his room.

The shower was calling his name and he beelined straight for the washroom, took off what little was left of his clothes and stepped under the hot water. Alright, let's try this day all over again...

Nik awoke early in the morning, as his roommate was still fast asleep with wafts of smoke still coming from his very presence. He quickly fetched his gym bag at the early hour of 5 am, no alarm needed, to get in his morning workout. Cardio, weights, and a brief swim were involved in the two hour session. Admittedly, the extent of the workout this morning was unusual for him. He was more focused on other matters. So I guess it's two options... make Nathan look like a bad guy or just sweep her off her feet... looks like it's option two. That walking sack of tears and anxiety probably couldn't so much as swat a fly without apologizing.

The Russian-American's eyes were vicious, filled with an edge of conniving wit that oozed out of his very being. Nik rounded a corner, his stomach rumbling with the desire of food, when his eyes glanced upon a sign. The Danger Room. The edge in his eyes washed away as a wave of awe spread across his face. He had yet to try it out... a room designed for training. To become a hero.

Nik's eyes and face were downtrodden in grief at the realization. He was training to be a hero, not an asshole. He didn't want to become Isaac... he wanted to be an X-Man. Someone who inspired those with powers to stand up for what was right. A small sigh of regret escaped his lips as Nik trodded towards the gym showers to wash off briefly before getting ready for class. For now, he would bide his time. He couldn't compromise who he was for someone he had just met... no matter how much it hurt to think about her with someone like Nathan.

Someone who was weak.

Someone like Nik all those years ago.

Breakfast with Danny was... nice. Really nice, actually. Aya'd forgotten what it was like to eat with someone, chatting away about nothing at all, laughing, joking... she hadn't realized how much she'd missed it.

Aya had spent her last year of high school in self-imposed isolation. Between her dad, work, Kainoa... her mutation... Aya had withdrawn. She'd had no one to eat meals with, no one to talk to.

Lonely. Aya was lonely. The sudden realization nearly took her breath away, drowning out Danny's chatter. The reality of where she was settled into her; she was at school, eating with a classmate, dreading her first class of the day... and everyone around her knew she was a mutant. But it felt almost like normal.

An emotion she couldn't understand built in her stomach. It was something resembling guilt -- or relief, or fear, or grief --

Aya stood up with a start, the legs of her chair scraping against the ground. She blinked at her own sudden movement. She looked down at Danny with startled eyes.

"I-" Aya swallowed, and opened here mouth to try again. "I'm sorry, I think my class might've actually been earlier than I thought. I need to go get my schedule." The words came out in a rush as she gathered up her bag and her dishes. "Thank you so much for talking to me." Despite her frantic state, Aya's words rang with sincerity. She opened her mouth again to say that she'd talk to him again later. The words caught in her throat. Instead, all Aya could do was offer an apologetic smile. With that, Aya turned and left the table before Danny could so much as say anything. Dropping her dishes off at the counter, she left the cafeteria for the girls' dorm.

Aya paid little attention to her surroundings as she made for her room, heart thundering for reasons unknown. When she finally found her door, her vision had tunneled, leaving only the wooden frame visible. She fumbled for her keys jamming them in the doorknob. In a few moments the door was open. Aya crossed the threshold, pulling the door shut with a loud thud, and pressed her back against it. A shuddering breath that she hadn't realized she'd been holding escaped her. Aya sank to the floor, letting her eyes fall closed. Her heart knocked against her rib cage and she could feel her pulse in her throat.

Another breath.

Something burned behind her eyes. Gritting her teeth, Aya pressed the heels of her palms into her eyes. They came away damp.

There was too much. Faces swirled in her mind: her father, bright and charming; her father, dying and grey; Kainoa, angry and terrified; Christina, the friend she'd left behind; her weeping classmates; Kainoa. Always Kainoa.

The harsh ring of her cell phone tore through the air. Aya gasped at it, her pulse spiking again. After a moment she realized what it was. With heavy hands, she fumbled through her bag until she pulled out the blaring device. Aya blinked at the name shining on the screen.

Mama.

Her eyebrows pulled together in confusion. She did the math in her head, trying to figure out why her mother would be calling from Japan at this hour. Aya reluctantly hit accept and raised the phone to her ear.

"<Mom?>" she answered in Japanese. "<Isn't it like midnight in Japan?>"

"<I'm not in Japan,>" came her mother's filtered voice, "<I just landed in Honolulu. Come pick me up from the airport.>"

Aya jolted upright. "<What?!>"

"<I thought I'd surprise you!>"

"<Why -- Mom, you have to tell me first!>" Panic was quickly setting in.

"<Don't be disrespectful,>" she snapped back. Aya's lips pressed together. There was silence on the line for a long moment. Then her mother sighed. "<I just... after your father... I thought we could spend time together.>" Anger sparked in Aya's chest.

She hadn't even come to the funeral.

"...Aya?"

Her grip tightened around her phone, turning her knuckles white. She could hear the vague sound of airport announcements from her mother's side.

"<Aya, I want you to come back to Japan with me.>" Aya's heart stopped.

"<What?>"

"<I want you to move in with me.>"

"<Mom, no I-->"

"<We can talk about it at your house. I just don't think you should be on your own-->"

So many responses sprung to mind: that she didn't want to, that her mother had no right to ask, that she was just fine on her own... instead, what came out was:

"<I'm not in Hawaii anymore.>"

The silence was long and deafening.

"<Excuse me?>"

Aya squeezed her eyes shut, her head falling back against the door. She hadn't ever intended for her mother to find out.

"<I'm on the mainland for school.>"

"<...I see. Why didn't you tell me?>" The hurt in her mother's voice burrowed its way under Aya's skin. Guilt seeped into her, despite herself. "<I flew all the way-->"

"<I'm sorry. Look, I have to go-->"

"Aya--"

"<I have class. I'll call you later.>" A false promise. Aya terminated the call, cutting off her mother's response. The phone fell to the ground with a clatter.

Aya was suddenly exhausted. She closed her eyes again and a sigh heaved her shoulders.

"Shit..."

Her phone rang again, but Aya didn't move. Eventually it stopped. Her text tone sounded, no doubt her mother demanding answers. Aya didn't know how long she sat against the door, wishing the world could just stop spinning for a moment. It couldn't have been more than a few minutes. She knew she had to get up eventually, and deal with life. Class.

I don't want to go to class.

And just like that, it was decided. Knowing it was the wrong decision, but unable to bring herself to make any others, Aya pushed herself up. She'd try again tomorrow, she told herself. She picked her phone up from the ground, ignoring the many notifications from her mother. She grabbed her bag and dropped her phone inside. Aya looked longingly at her bed. Curling up under the covers and hiding from the world would be ideal. But the thought of her roommate finding her and asking questions quickly eliminated that option. She supposed finding a corner of the library would be the next best thing.

Look busy. No one questions you if you look busy.

Her eyes fell on Professor Everose's wooden butterfly resting on her bedside table and Aya paused. She chewed her lip for a moment, looking at it. Then Aya crossed the room and grabbed it before making for the door. The weight of it was smooth and heavy in her hand as she made her way towards the library.

Why Me?

Api’s Fight Theme
Till I Collapse

Api took his position in the center of the Danger Room allowing the powerful pulse of the American rap music to draw from his core the ber-serkr; what he pictured as the dark shadow of his heart. His humanity flowed away as he allowed all the anger and violence he normally held in check to surface, to take control but not run wild.

Around him the Danger Room created adversaries that dropped from the ceiling or grew from the floor their stances displaying their sinister intent, their melee weapons held with deadly intention. Then without warning they attacked. Spears thrust into the space he occupied and found only air as he vaulted upwards his gravitic control and gymnastics combining with seamless ease.

Hammers were thrown only to fall short as they passed through a wall of expanding gravities perhaps 4 or 5 times they normal as did arrows fired from 3 of his foes. Api spun like a top stopping 3 meters of the Danger Room floor his arms flying out at 90 degrees from his shoulders as he altered the gravity plane to the horizontal rather than its normal vertical orientation. The effect was was violent and immediate as his adversaries caught off balance suddenly fell sideways some flying into the walls at terminal velocity their robotic forms breaking apart. Without pause Api snarled as he zeroed two of the warrior bots and placed 8 times normal gravity attraction points at the center of two more making the zeroed deadly projectiles.

His blood was boiling so much as he finished off his deadly sport that when he looked around and saw no more targets he threw his head back and roared as he flipped gravity on its head in the room sending the already damaged and destroyed bots hurtling into the ceiling.

He stopped his rage crossing his arms over his chest and taking a cleansing breath as bot parts rained around him then there was silence.

He stood amid his work like a statue for perhaps 2 minutes before he exhaled pushing the anger back into its proper place within his soul.

Why I am Here

”Why do I feel on fire?” he asked himself as he looked around shocked that his rage released was as brutal as the legends of the Bear Shirts.

”I did this barely controling my Wolf’s heart, I’m glad they are only machines” he said to himself knowing that he didn’t see the broken toys as machine as he smashed them. To Api they were Saxons or Gauls as he’d been killing them and the felling of each an emotional release that the civilized he knew had felt so real at the time.

So he decided to meditate on it as the rooms cleaning systems swept the remains into the sub basement’s recyclers so they could be restored for the next exercise.

Kaylee Everose; Adam Pierce & Introducing Tabitha North

Location: School Conerence Room; Main Ground Floor

Mentions: Uná O’Brian @Almalthia; Drake Edwards @Draven; Nikolai Markov @webboysurf; Gunnar Grimson @RumikoOhara; Khloe Jeon @KatKook & Sy @Bounce

Kaylee smiled at the nice balding man in a blue polo and slacks. The kids at this school would run all over him and lead to an early grave for him. He was sweet but not what they were looking for. She turned to Adam as he came back from walking Mr. Rhodes to the door. “No Adam. Nothing so far. Do we really have no one that can take this on?” Adam was about to say something when Kaylee waved him off. “No for the last time you are needed here teaching you can’t do that and security. We need someone competent and powered who understands that sometimes things get more dangerous than expected. No normal human could handle these kids. Isaac Miller for one. Don’t get me started on Uná O’Brian, Drake Edwards, Nikolai Markov, Gunnar Grimson or Khloe Jeon. Practically all those kids could seriously injure or even kill someone. A few already have. We need this for the safety of the students, us and the outside world.” She ticked off fingers for each name.

Adam ran his hand through his hair and sighed. Kaylee was right. Not that he’d admit it. He had too many responsibilities to take this one on as well. He grunted and picked up a folder from the table and tossed it at Kaylee. The name on the file read St. John, Coleman. “Try this one. He’s supposed to be here in about a half hour.”

Kaylee started to say something as their communicators went off simultaneously. Unauthorized presence in the Danger Room. Unauthorized presence in the Danger Room. Threat level escalated accordingly. Standby. The message beeped out as Kaylee and Adam looked at each other in shock.

“Oh my God!! Adam tell me you switched it from auto this morning after you used it?!? Or that you didn’t use it this morning at all!?!” Kaylee went white with shock. “What if it’s Sy?!?”

Adam didn’t bother wasting words he turned and ran for the Danger Room.

Kaylee got on the communicator and called for Tabby. “Tabby? Will you meet Adam at the Danger Room. Someone has to work the controls so that Adam can pull the crazy kid out of there.”

A velvety posh British voice came over the communicator. “Already on top of it. Besides Adam will need a cool head to not kill the kid.”

Adam snapped back in a frustrated tone. “I can hear that you know.”

”So nice of you to join the conversation. Get your rear in gear. You’re probably the one who caused this.” You could have heard a pin drop in the silence. “Bloody hell Adam!!! Meet you there. Out.”

Jason Green

Location:
The School's Interior, The Lounge
Interactions:

The doors from one of the offices pushed open, and out stepped a hooded figure. Hooded, but not particularly menacing on first glance. In fact, one probably wouldn't think much of them if they happened to be around to see the hooded one, at least not on first glance. Normal humans probably would have a least felt a shiver, but that was when the hood was down. The wearer of the hood remained rather silent as they stepped out of the nurses office, in deep thought as to the events that had unfolded prior. Much had occurred in the past week, and he was still trying to wrap his brain around it. Jason Green had been a not so average kid about a month ago, although not very social and constantly paranoid, his life had been a simple one.

A little over a week ago however, was when his life changed, and he found himself here, in the Ashford Institute for the Gifted, which he had previously assumed was one of those fancy private schools that you had to be rich and extremely intelligent to get into. Being neither of those with only an above average intelligence score, and a family that lived in an apartment, he never had even thought of trying to get into the place. Of course, now he actually knew what the school was for.

He had been put through many tests over the past week, as they wanted a full test of what his powers could do, alongside his normal capabilities. Jason was never an exercise nut, in fact he only ever ran when he was in the mood for moving at a quicker pace, or he was late for something, so many of the tests had left him somewhat tired. He apparently was a later arrival, and there were many other students already within the school grounds. Some of the testers had encouraged him to go interact with them before classes began the next day, so he found himself heading in the direction he thought the Lounge to be.

Being the newest addition to the school, he figured he'd be target for at least one of the local bullies, as that was how it worked with his previous two schools and even the short time he'd spent in college, which was one of the reasons he'd been discovered. As he left the ten foot radius of the nurses office, the presence of mutants disappeared, and he breathed a sigh of relief. He was alone, at least until he found the Lounge.

Apparently, next to the telekinesis, the ability to detect mutants was also one of the abilities he had had for most of his life. He always knew when mutants were around, or at least when they were close to him. It was a rather annoying mutation, 'Mutation' was what they had called his abilities, as being in small rooms like the nurses office with more then one mutant sent off the equivalent of a fire alarm in his brain. It wasn't loud or anything, but the ability was more annoying than anything. He honestly hoped they could do what they said and help him control it and the rest of his mutations... oh there it was.

He was broken from his train of thought when his eyes landed on the entrance to what he could only assume was the Lounge area, which contained several of what he could also only assume were his fellow students, unless the teachers were really good at blending in.

He wasn't tired enough to bother heading to one of the unclaimed rooms, but he had never been one to start a conversation, so he went with the easiest option, he plopped himself onto a chair, ran a hand through his bangs, still with his hood on, as the zipper on his backpack, the only thing he had with him besides the clothes on his back, trembled, and unzipped itself, a fictional book floating out, trembling the entire way, before moving to face level, and dropping into his hands. He had been meaning to get some reading in, and now was as good a time as any. Unwinding after a long week was essential for keeping a comfortable lifestyle.

Coleman St. John

After the accident, the doctors at the clinic told him certain things would come back quite naturally while others may take time or even have to be relearned completely. Things like remembering where things were in the grocery store, the channels for the news or how to shift the gears on his bike came very naturally, like nothing had happened, but even over a year later he couldn’t recall where the title to the bike was or who he had bought it from. Driving along he glanced at the passing cars while the station played a song he knew he was tired of hearing, but still liked just enough not to change. The GPS in the dash gave a chipper reminder that his exit was approaching and his hand rolled over the turn signal as he left the freeway, thankful to exit the choked artery of afternoon traffic.

The cases over the last several months hadn’t been anything particularly exciting, but the folder in the passenger seat next to him represented solid casework- something else that came back as naturally as hitting the ball with the bat. He was proud of it and derived a certain level of satisfaction just glancing over briefly at the size of the neatly tied legal file as he drove along. The Los Angeles area was never short on work for a private investigator and the pages therein included recommendations from lawyers, clients and police as well as meticulously concluded files that covered everything from cheating spouses to the run of cigarette boats coming up from Mexico. The money wasn’t making him rich, but he was getting along well enough to eat out at places that didn’t include a drive-thru when he wanted. With the inevitable Fall slow-down approaching, he was thinking about expanding his scope of business and was the reason for his current drive.

The ad placed by the Ashford Institute wasn’t particularly large or attention grabbing and seemed, at first glance, a little out of place when Cole first noticed it in the local paper accepting resumes for a “Security Analyst”. Not thinking he’d get any sort of reply in light of the numerous ex-military types and more established offices in the area, he went ahead and sent in his CV just out of curiosity and to his surprise, received a call back from a Professor named Everose who wanted a face to face interview. Something about her voice through the phone felt searching as if she was gathering some sense of him just between their voices. He hung up the line at the end of the call with slight reservation, but decided to go to the interview nonetheless. The Institute had developed a particular sort of mystique around it in the local community. No one really seemed to know a lot about it, though everyone knew the name.

One thing that was for certain, by all accounts and research, was that they were very particular about their screening process and the “gifted” moniker was a catch-all for their particular clientele. He nodded to himself with a tiny smirk thinking about it as turned off a few surface streets towards a long rural stretch, he could be rather particular himself. It had been over a week since he last made a ride, but over the course of several months, the feeling became more like an instinct or a calling. He could feel it in his chest, like a fist reaching and grasping the inside of his heart, tighter and stronger with each moment he held back. Embracing it felt completely natural. The rush of wind over his shoulders, the unbridled focus, like his whole aura was pouring out from his soul in a path of fire and scorched earth. He wasn’t expecting anything too exciting from the school or a bunch of stuffy academic types, but as he approached the gate, he couldn’t deny the distant flame of suspicion in the back of his mind.

Cole placed the legal file in a small backpack and thumbed the keyfob a couple times giving the alarm a couple short notes as he stepped away from the completely inconspicuous grey Explorer he used for his PI work among the other cars in the small lot. Miss Everose had told him to call when he arrived and she would let him through the main gate. Looking around at most of the fairly new construction, he made a few mental notes to himself as he pulled up her number and sent the call.

Why Me?

Api’s Fight Theme
Till I Collapse

Api didn’t know what alerted him but he knew something was off, maybe it was a sound, the hunted feeling one gets when watched, or even a disturbance of the force but for whatever reason he knew remaining stationary was dangerous.

Even he was stunned by how quickly he flew off the Danger Room floor almost smashing into the ceiling only his flight field saving him by rolling back at him from the hardened surface. As he flew the air around him was ripped by energy bolts seeking to drop him to the floor where he was sure he would be assaulted and possibly injured none of these things to his liking.

He reacted as he had on the cliff face and at sea his mind empty of all thought of how to control his ability acting on instinct and willpower. He made a null stop that were he not immune to the forces of gravity would have grayed him out his next maneuver knocking him out cold as he accelerated in the close confines towards the floor at 6 Gs of acceleration.

His inner wolf was in ecstasy as the adrenalin he’d road earlier snapped back up pushing him to higher levels. Had he been a Baseline human and not a mutant his reactions to the fight or flight chemicals would have granted him more strength, more speed, and increased endorphins but as a mutant it also increased whatever mental state it was that drove his power.

He was suddenly aware of the mass of every object in the danger room as a type of sight he was not aware of opened in his mind giving him a chance. The wolf warned him that these foes had weapons that used energy rather than kinetic mass and his defences against such lacking. He knew it was going to be difficult and his only real defense lay in attack and maneuver so he applied his new found ability to sense mass to provide a mental map of the room designating his adversaries as secondary.

He used the room obstacles as cover as he used his regular senses to track his enemies making sure they found only the solid surfaces to spend their attacks on as his agile mind worked on a counter attack.

He was a bird trapped in a cage with a hungry ferret in this dam room; had this been outside his defence would have been a fast withdrawal. He crushed the self pity and went on the attack using the only thing he could think of; he reversed and increased gravity sending everything at the ceiling as if they’d all fallen the same 4 to 8 meters depending where they stood before his attack smashing nearly half of them. He was surprised when some had been able to flip midair and land on their feet upside down and fire at him.

One of the bolts hit home staggering Api so that his effect on gravity was ceased causing the aliens to fall back to the floor as he tried to recover and smashed into the floor himself.

He barely had time to react when one of the alien/bots rushed at him forcing him to zero it out and fling it sideways at the far wall.

Api didn’t have time to gloat as the three remaining alien/bots rushed his position firing rapidly to prevent his focusing on any one of them as he dodged their fire till his new mass sense told him he had been backed to the wall and his maneuvering room cut down to maybe 30 percent. He tried to send the closest adversary at on of the others but was stunned to see it flip as it left the ground using rotational forces to alter its trajectory as the target went into a squatted firing stance and the energy of its weapon pummeled Api sending him into the wall.

The last two were just about to fire when anger and rage boiled over in Api’s heart and the gravity around him increased to 20 times causing the attackers to increase their mass to 3922660 newtons or 4,000 kilos just before the combination of energy and exertion made him lose consciousness.

Kaylee Everose; Adam Pierce & Tabitha North

Location: Kaylee - School Conerence Room; Main Ground Floor; Front Gate//Adam - School Hallways; Elevator; Danger Room; Nurses Office//Tabby - School Hallways; Elevator; Danger Room Control Center; Nurses Office

Interaction: Kaylee - Coleman St John; Adam - Gunnar @RumikoOhara

Mentions: Tabby - Ashford @ShieldsOfWar

Kaylee

Kaylee’s phone rang and she silenced the communicator to pick up the phone. “Ah Mr. St John right on time. I will be out in just a minute. Thank you.” Kaylee collected the papers and arranged them on the desk in the conference room. She then turned and headed out to the front gate calmly.

She walked over to Coleman who had stepped out of his Explorer and was waiting on the other side of the gate. She just about stumbled as a riot of powder blue, electric blue, neon red, lemon yellow, gold and a blinding white light swirled around this man. She’d never seen anything so...strange and yet beautiful in a mutant’s aura. It seemed to sink back into him and was gone within seconds. She almost couldn’t believe she saw that happen. It was as if his aura could tell that she saw it and hid itself. She recovered quickly and got to the gate. “Gravel and heels no matter how small don’t mix well.” She smiled and opened the gate with a series of numbers on a keypad. Letting the gate open she stepped out and motioned to the Explorer. “A tour of the grounds and a little history of the Institute before the interview. One should always know what one is getting into before they take the job.” She wanted to keep St John out of the school till Adam came back and they could tour the inside. Plus St John would need Adam’s approval as well as her own.
Adam
Tabitha

Adam was running like he was being chased by a pack of hellhounds. He dodged kids and adults alike just managing not to run into anyone. The near miss came when he ran through the lounge area. He hit the elevator just as Tabby swung around the corner. “About damned time you showed up Tabs.” He managed to not pull open the false wall as it slid open and the elevator doors as they opened at what felt like hours, but was really only meer seconds after calling for the elevator.

Tabby’s transformation had started and as usual it was extremities that turned first. She had pulled her aide out of near slumber and told him to take the class over as she had kicked off her loafers and bolted. Those shoes were 20 £ and I am not going kitty in them. Claws will ruin them. Tabby grinned at Adam flashing her fangs as she cleared her throat and with a slight purr in her English accent she directed the elevator where to go. “Danger Room Ellie.” “Confirmed.Tabby Cat. Destination Danger Room confirmed.” “Now Adam you know I had a class and had to get the aide to take over.’

Adam grinned and flicked an ear that was swiveling his way. Tabby hissed at him and he hold up his hands in mock wounded fashion then the doors opened and they saw flashes of stun bolts and a crash as things sounded like a bunch of metal broke. They looked at each other and Tabby headed for the control room and Adam the door.

Adam pressed the pad to let him into the room as more stun bolts were heard. “Training Sequence in progress. Access Denied.” Adam tapped his communicator. “Tabs we have real serious issues here. The fucking computer won’t let me in.” Looking through the window he saw Gunnar Grimson about to tear the bots a new one but they started learning how to deal with his gravity shifting powers.

Tabby had just gotten into the control room as Adam said that. “You know I find it frightfully dull when you lower yourself to swear at me. Honestly it’s a mark of-”

Adam interrupted her gritting his teeth as he watched one of the bots turn on Gunnar and he knew that if he didn’t get in there soon then things were not going to be looking up for Gunnar. “Tabitha not-”

Tabby slid over to the controls. “Right now. Yes yes I know. I am not Winona Ryder so you can stop interrupting this girl.” Her nails clacked over the keys as she stopped the program a little too late. She had just finished the code and unlocked the door as she saw Gunnar fall to the other bots who stunned him. She winced in sympathy. “Oh he’ll have a wicked headache when he comes ‘round, he will.” She checked the logs. Adam had accessed the Danger Room early this morning but had turned it off as soon as he left. Someone else had come along and fiddled with the controls minutes before Gunnar had shown up. She checked again. Not possible. No bloody way… She pulled out her cell phone and dialed. “Yeah Forge? Tabby Cat. Lock everyone not on staff out or yourself out of the system here in LA... Yeah no one but the teachers. Possible tampering... No not the Brotherhood but something like it here in LA. I’ll keep you posted of course... Yeah keep an eye on it just incase... I know a technokenetic will be able to slide right by the stuff but lay a few pieces of flypaper out and see if we get some prints… Right. Later.” She hung up and met Adam at the door to the Danger Room just as he hefted Gunnar on his shoulder in a fireman carry.

“Man this kid looks little but he’s dense. Did I leave it running?” Adam looked concerned he saw the bots take down Gunnar and was kicking the shit out of himself mentally for it.

Tabby looked up at Adam and shook her head. “No. Someone came behind you minutes before Gunnar accessed the Danger Room and tampered with it...possibly. We need to talk to Ashford. All of us. I called Forge and locked it up. Hopefully it stays that way. Come on. Might take the rest of the week off of studies and focus on abilities and defending themselves and each other. At least that’s my suggestion.”

Adam frowned at that but carried Gunnar to the Nurses Office.

[ Kitchen ] [ Interactions: @BoyMom69035 @The Mad Hatter ]

The young Shi'ar had found a box of Cheerios and seemed quite content with that.

Keep with his casual Tuesday theme, the boy applied the same minimalist philosophy to the dining experience as he did in dressing for the dining experience. To wit, in addition to pants-less breakfast, the t-shirt clad Shi'ar was skipping the dishes and the just munching handfuls of the cereal straight out of the box. Sally seemed to have some rather big ideas about what all breakfast was supposed to involve, but Syaoran had a yellow box in hand and it worked for him.

And a Capri Sun juice box.

Humans seemed to have some kind of preference for the interspecies consumption of bovine lactation. Which, in the grand scheme of things humans did that were really, really strange... that had to be near the top of the list.

Either way, no milk for Sy. Dry cereal and juice. Breakfast of extraterrestrial champions.

There seemed like there was a lot of noise coming from outside of the kitchen. The young Shi'ar could make out a voice that sounded like Drake (@Draven) that was muffled through the walls. Turning his head to look over at Ruben, the boy asked, "So, if you're not American, then what is your planet called?"

The boy paused a moment. He had to remind himself that humans maintained a socio-political network of nation-state identities, rather than interplanetary geo-political entities. "Or, nation, I mean," the boy amended.

Coleman St. John

Glancing over the layout of the outer wall and the iron main gates, Cole found it interesting that even though the school was all new construction, the entire campus seemed to have been built to look aged, like it had always been there. His eyes were scanning steadily when he saw a woman approach on the other side of the gate amongst the regular flow of students and staff. Instinctively, he knew it was Miss Everose as soon as she turned into his line of sight. Her appearance was just about in line with what he expected from her voice on the phone. Fit and serious, she had a youthful and determined stride that he liked and he had to remember for a second that he was there for an interview.

What he didn’t expect as he caught her piercing glance with a cordial smile was her temporary loss of footing and even though he was on the opposite side of the closed gate, he almost involuntarily adjusted his stance as if to catch her, but she recovered, seemingly a little embarrassed. As she typed a code into the other side of the stone pillar he listened for how many digits she pressed and how quickly, noting that with the right amount of reach and the correct tools, someone with the code could let themselves in the front gate fairly easily from the outside. He met her warm greeting with a firm handshake and was a little amused with her academic tone, though he was immediately skeptical of her wanting to do a tour of the perimeter rather than get to the scheduled interview.

Why the hell would she want to do a tour before I even answered any questions? He thought to himself keeping an indifferent expression across his face as the gate closed back behind her. On top of that, she’s willing to get in a car with someone she has never even met… Which was a massive, waving red-flag. He gave a light shrug, though inside he was more than a little cautious about it himself and glanced up briefly to where he thought security cameras might be watching along the sides of the buildings and fence-line. “Ok, sure thing.” He said turning back and leading her to his car, even politely opening the door for her. When he got in the driver’s seat, he very casually let all of the windows down so that anyone watching could see them both easily and was thankful that it was a nice day.

Drake “D” Edwards
&

Location: Library

As the water from the showerhead rained on his face, he couldn't help but let his mind wander. It always circled back to the voice invading his mind, to the dream from last night. He hadn't had any luck finding a telepath and that theory was starting to wain quite a bit anyway.

The face in the dream haunted him. Even now, it gave him chills as he imagined it, that laugh, those eyes...

As he turned the water off, he decided it was time to get proactive. If he did nothing, things were only going to get worse. He dried himself off and went to his chest of drawers, pulling out a pair of jeans and a simple black t-shirt. He hurriedly then threw on a pair of socks and slipped into his black boots. He hadn't had much luck in acquiring useful information from his fellow students, so the next best bet was to try the school's fount of information. He closed the door to his dorm and headed toward the library.

Ashford's library was expansive. Drake stood in the entryway for a moment, a little taken aback by the selection of literature. Where the hell do I even start...? He looked to the counter area where he expected to see a librarian, but the post was currently unattended. Damn. He was at least hoping for a little direction, but it looked like he was on his own. Drake sighed and stroked his beard, preparing himself for the burden ahead. One foot in front of the other. He took his first step forward and the hunt was on.

The aisles were towering, each one with its own dedicated rolling stairway to reach the books that were too high from arm's length. His eyes quickly scanned the spines as he moved slowly down them, hoping to see a keyword that might be helpful. He reached the end of the aisle he chose with nothing to report. This is going to take freaking forever. He closed his eyes and shook his head, pressing his thumb between his eyebrows as he tried to combat an inevitable headache. As he opened his eyes again, he scanned this new area of the library for any sign of staff. His mission failed, but his eyes widened all the same when they fell upon Aya. His demeanor perked up as he walked over exclaiming, "Thank you, Jeebus! Aya, is there any chance you saw the librarian or anyone who works here? Where the hell do I go to look up crazy dreams or telepathy or burning insides?! How much money did they spend acquiring all these friggin books?! Oh, and how are you?"

Aya jumped in her chair when an increasingly familiar voice cut through the library. She'd sequestered herself away into the furthest corner of the library she could find, trying to drown out her thoughts with books. Aya looked up to see bright, miss-matched eyes. Her cheeks heated -- first that she'd been caught hiding, then that he'd been the one to find her, (did no one else exist on this campus?) but she didn't have time to be embarrassed. The milk man rattled off a slew of questions.

"The books are in the mental health section, probably," she quipped before she could stop herself. Aya's eyes widened and she cleared her throat. "...How are you?" She thought back to that glazed, manic look in his eyes from this morning. He was clean now, at least. Aya closed the book she was reading, keeping her pointer finger in between the pages to hold her place. "If you're having that much trouble, the teachers would probably help you. I didn't see the librarian when I came in... I'm not actually even sure they have one on staff." Aya stopped, her skin heating again. "Also... I'm sorry, but what's your name?"

Drake's head retracted for a second as a puzzled look fell over his face. "It's me... Drake... We just saw eachother earlier this morning and last niii-I never told you my name," the realization was slow, but he finally got there. "Holy sh-. So sorry," he said, palming his forehead in embarrassment. He was a drunken idiot when they met. "Drake Edwards," he declared, "and ya, the mental health section is clearly where I need to be," he said with a smirk. He nodded at Aya's book before asking, "So what are you getting into, anyway?"

Aya's free hand slammed over the cover of the book.

"Nothing!" Now her face was definitely on fire. Aya glanced down at the book, catching sight of the cover art between her fingers: a voluptuous woman with a torn dress hanging off of a chiseled man with flowing hair, sea foam splashing behind them. She looked back up at Drake with wide eyes. Biting her lip, she forced herself to speak. "I uh... when I need a distraction I read the worst romance book I can find." Sliding her hand away, she picked it up to show him. For the Love of the Ocean. "This seemed like my best bet."

"Huh," was the intelligent response that Drake went with. He looked the cover art over before sliding out a chair and taking a seat. "I gotta admit, he's pretty sexy." His eyes darted from the man in the picture to Aya in repetitive, rapid succession as he tried and failed to suppress a smile. Something about seeing Aya squirm was just as cute as it was entertaining.

"Well I can't argue with your choice." He silently read the title again. "Certainly seems to fit the bill." His attention then moved from the book to the person. "So Aya needs a cheesy romance novel to distract her," he summarized. "From what?"

Aya nearly threw the book at him as he teased her. She put it back on the table, (face-down) and dropped her hands in her lap. She looked up at Drake's question.

From what? From... everything. Aya opened her mouth. She paused, closing it again, looking down at the wood grain on the table. Thoughts swirled around her mind as she searched for something to say -- something she could safely share. What surprised Aya though, was that... she wanted to share. Not everything, but... she was so tired of keeping everything in. Eventually she tried again, eyes still glued to the table.

"My mom called. She wants me to move in with her, but I didn't tell her I was here. She flew all the way to Hawaii from Japan, and just...expected me to--" A hint of anger stained her voice. Aya forced out a sigh, her hand coming up to run through her hair. "Sorry," she said, glancing back up at Drake, her anger gone. "Moving in with her is probably the smart choice." And yet it was even less appealing than being here. "We just don't get along."

Drake's face remained serious as he listened. Her story was in stark contrast to his in terms of parental engagement. He hadn't spoken to his family in quite a while. Every time he had the urge, he bailed on it. Why complicate things further? Let sleeping dogs lie. Even thinking about it stirred up mixed emotions and proverbial butterflies in his stomach.

"So you've got a 'Smother'," he concluded. Over-attachment could be very annoying and very flattering depending on the circumstance. By Aya's tone, Drake surmised that this was a case of the former. He thought about her words and tried to read in between the lines, forming the full picture in his head. "So your smother flew across the world on a whim without telling you to a place where you weren't at. She doesn't know you're here." It was a statement, but an inquiring one. Drake's put his elbow and leisurely covered his mouth with his fist, holding his chin up with a thumb. None of Drake's family knew he was here, either. He couldn't help but personally identify with the predicament. In the back of his mind, he rejoiced in the fact that there was someone else like him in this place, someone who shared roots, beyond just another person with powers.

An amused eyebrow lifted, the corner of Aya's mouth quirking up. "Not quite a 'smother'. She left when I was in middle school. She tried to take me with, her actually." Aya wasn't looking at Drake, instead gazing down and to the side as she remembered the day. "We kept in contact, but..." Aya shrugged. She blinked and her eyes refocused on Drake. "I was kind of hoping she'd never find out I was here," she confessed. Though she'd always known it was a foolish thing to hope. Of course she'd do something like this. "It makes sense though... her doing something like this. My... my dad's gone." Aya's throat closed up but she stopped and took a breath. "Since May. If she thought I was just sitting at home doing nothing then yeah, the 'motherly' thing to do would be to try and bring me back." Aya cleared her throat. "What's your family like?" she asked with a weak smile.

Drake rolled his eyes, not at Aya but in response to the question. "I've got a twin brother named Shawn. Good guy. Smart guy. Easy guy to like. And my parents do. A lot." Drake huffed a little as he thought about it. "They like me, too, but not enough to take any real interest." He was second string in his family and he knew it. Thinking of the movie 'Twins', Drake was definitely Danny DeVito to Shawn's Arnold Schwarzenegger. Every one of Drake's accomplishments were considered underwhelming by default. "I've gotten past the point of expecting my parents to care. But I'm like you; none of them know I'm here and the only guilt I have is not telling Shawn. Screw ma and pops." He straightened up a little. "Sorry to here about yours, though. Your old man, I mean."

Drake let a beat of silence pass before he asked, "Does she know what you are? What you can do?" Drake still wasn't quite sure what Aya could do, himself. The mystery was intriguing, though, as he ran through various possible scenarios in his head.

Aya shook her head. "No one does," came her soft reply. Learning that she was a mutant had been the single worst event of her life -- and that was counting her mom leaving and her dad dying of cancer. "My dad... he was the best person I knew. But he was really anti-mutant. I wanted to think that he loved me enough to..." to accept her. To hold her close and tell her everything would be ok as she cried. "A good daughter would've had faith in him. But I was too scared." Aya swiped at her suddenly damp cheeks. She looked back up at Drake, embarrassed, but feeling somehow lighter. She'd never told this to anyone before. Aya sniffled and tried to compose herself. "You should tell your brother." Another sad smile that didn't reach her eyes. "For both your sakes."

Seeing her tears triggered Drake's protective instincts. "Hey," he said, taking one of her hands in his and giving it a squeeze. "You're right. I should and thank you. Thank you so much." If asked why he hadn't done it already, why he hadn't opened up to his brother, Drake wouldn't have a good answer. It's stupid that it was taking him this long to truly consider.

He looked back at Aya's glistening eyes. "Not just for the advice, but for opening up." He wanted to console her further, to say anything that could bring a genuine smile to her face. Usually at this point he would try something sarcastic, but he didn't want to spoil the moment so, for just a beat, he let the silence permeate.

Aya looked at his hand covering her own on the table. She felt the callouses of his palm scratch lightly against her skin, the warmth in stark contrast to the chilled air of the library. There'd been so many small touches since she'd come to LA... Professor Everose, Uná, Danny, Drake... Aya felt greedy and touch starved, like she wanted to embrace and push and hold hands, just touch other people to remind herself she wasn't the only person in the world. She tried to swallow around a lump in her throat. The quiet of the library stretched on, Aya's hand under Drake's.

"Do you want to see what I can do?" The words were quiet. Aya didn't look up from their hands, unable to look at Drake's face. Her heart stopped as soon as the words left her lips.

Drake looked at her softly before answering, "Absolutely," he said in a near whisper, "if you're comfortable."

Aya chanced a look up at Drake. Seeing his open, earnest expression, she quickly looked back down at their hands. Was... was she really doing this? Every instinct told her don't do it, don't do it, remember what happened last time? But Aya was tired of being ashamed. She took a deep breath. Her hand turned under Drake's to curl around his wrist. She glanced up at him again.

"It... can be a little jarring." Holding his gaze for a moment longer, she closed her eyes. Her pulse was starting to race, she realized. Aya tried to ignore it. Another breath. Her eyebrows knit together as she searched inside herself for the power she'd tried so hard to bury. She'd never learned to control it properly yet and she still didn't quite know how it worked. Using her power was like trying to flex a muscle she never knew she had, or moving a phantom limb. The silence dragged on as they sat there, hands touching. A clock was ticking somewhere in the library, the sounds of the AC growing louder with nothing else to compete. Aya didn't know how long they sat for, still and --

The world fell away. There was no feeling except for the faint warmth of Drake's hand against her own, the hard edges of his palm scratching her. Sounds were muffled, like someone had put cloth over her ears. Aya opened her eyes.

The world was dark as the night sky, lights like tiny stars outlining the shapes and colors of the library. She saw Drake -- Drake's spirit -- in living color before her, wispy haze drifting away at his edges. His body was slumped back in the chair behind him, made of stars. A shiver ran down Aya's spine. She'd never grow used to this eerie world.

Drake's eyelids might as well have no longer existed, they were pulled back so wide as he started taking in his surroundings, his head darting in all directions. A maniacal grin formed on his face as he looked in amused bewilderment at the husks they left behind in the chairs. Everything was different. Everything was different! Drake looked to Aya and just started laughing, clearly excited.

"This is so freaking cool!" he attempted to shout, not quiet sure how sound worked in this... this... wherever they were. With his free hand, he tried to touch his body's face. His fingers went right through the surface of the skin and beyond. "Ugh, gross!" He couldn't feel anything, but the idea that his spirit hand was swirling through his physical skull was a little unsettling. "So this is your power," he asked, looking around, spinning in a slow circle. "This is your world." His face settled in a crooked smile as he looked to Aya again. "Amazing."

A shocked, disbelieving little laugh escaped Aya as she watched Drake. He shouted in amazement, his voice ringing loud and clear in the astral plane, though it echoed in this empty world. Her world.

Drake had called it her world.

It was odd to think of. Nothing about her power felt like it really belonged to her. It felt like some cruel prank done to her, a fate forced upon her without her say. But watching Drake delight in it... maybe it wasn't so terrible.

"What did you do, you freak?!"

Aya's breath caught in her lungs. Kainoa's voice echoed in her head, full of panic and rage. The smile drifted from her lips. Aya blinked. His face flashed before her, a mask of fear.

"What -- what is this?"

The memory of her classmate stood behind Drake, invisible to him.

"Take me BACK!" The echoes of his words sounded again and again, the last words he'd ever said to Aya. Her blood had frozen over in her veins. All she could do was stare at nothing over Drake's shoulder, quiet panic, guilt, horror rising in her chest.

Drake's eyes squinted in confusion as he looked upon Aya's reaction. He meant to turn around, but then heard something familiar, something very unsettling. It was that hiss of laughter, that hellish chuckle he heard in his dream. Behind Aya, shadow rolled in like mist, consuming the supernatural atmosphere. Following it were the hard thuds, the thunderous footsteps of the thing from before. Drake's jaw fell open as the anxiety crept up his spine, giving him chills.

"Uh... shit..." he managed to whisper. He threw his fist out to the side aggressively, intending to summon flames about it, but the summon was unanswered. Drake examined his bare hand with a look of fear and betrayal. "C'mon!" Again he tried and again he failed. His eyes moved back up to the entity among the shadows. It was different now. It looked more menacing, more powerful. About its horned head danced flames which illuminated it's body in a silhouette. Drake could see its clawed hands, curled into fists, it's armored torso, its monstrous face. "A demon."

It was the only word to describe it. Its red eyes danced with flame, looking directly at Drake, hissing in amusement as it approached slowly, methodically. Our of his peripheral vision, Drake saw his physical body twitch within the chair in which is was slumped.

"We've gotta go," he said quickly, in a panic. "We've gotta go! WE'VE GOTTA GET OUT OF HERE!" By the end of it, he was shouting, his pulse racing. The demon picked up pace, his laughter growing full a hiss to a full bellow. Even in his spirit form, Drake felt his eye twitch and burn. He doubled over in pain, trying to rub his eye, but unable to create any physical relief.

Aya's gaze was still locked on the ghost of Kainoa when she was suddenly aware of something... dark. Something evil that should not have been there. A laugh slithered over her skin. Acrid smoke filled her lungs. Aya couldn't move. She managed to glance up at Drake. His face was a mask of fear as he looked at something over her shoulder. Aya turned. Screaming, she stumbled back, bumping into Drake as he tried and failed to call on his fire.

It was a demon -- terrible and towering, with fire burning under its skin like blood. It walked forward. Every nerve in Aya's body screamed at her this was wrongwrongwrong, it didn't belong here!

Drake doubled over behind her, crying out in pain. Aya spun to see him clutching at his eye. But worse yet -- his body in the physical world was beginning to move.

The demon moved ever closer.

Aya grabbed Drake's arm. She had to take them back. She squeezed her eyes shut.

Nothing happened.

Come on, come on, come ON! she begged herself. She looked over her shoulder again to see the demon almost upon them, its footsteps echoing in the empty world. Heat from the demons fire burned her skin, growing unbearably hot, it was almost there, almost there --

Aya shut her eyes again against the demon and its fire.

The next moment they were back in the library. But it was still so hot, still so painfully, suffocatingly hot. With a cry, Aya ripped her burning hand from Drake's where it rested on the table. Her palm was angry and red, pain seeping into her skin. Aya held her wrist with her other hand, trying to steady its tremors. She looked up.

"Drake?" came her hushed, shaking voice.

Drake violently came to life with an exaggerated inhalation of air. He looked at Aya, shock painted upon his face. "You s-saw something," he said, "but did you see... Did you see what I saw, too?" His face was that of a frightened child's, his eyes glistening with fear. His fully red eye and his now half-red/half-blue eye. Drake slowly exhaled before she could answer. After trying to focus for a minute, to gather his wits, he looked to Aya again and asked, "Are you alright?"

Aya looked back down at her burning hand. She tried to move her fingers but pain shot through her hand and she grimaced.

"I'm -- I'm fine. What was that?" She looked up at Drake. Aya froze. "Your eye. It's different.

"No idea," was his only reply as he shrugged off her second comment. His eyes darted down to her hand. "Did I do that?"

Aya dropped her hand into her lap. ”It’s fine,” she repeated. It was silent for a moment. ”I should, um... I should get to class.” Without looking at Drake she started gathering her things, pushing herself up from the table. Her movements were too quick, too shaky to match her soft voice.

"Hey!" His face was a mix of confusion and determination. "Do what you need to do, but I'm sorry. Please don't leave me leave me. I swear I didn't mean to mess this up..." No tears would fall, but his eyes became glassy. He already knew he had issues. Why the hell would he bring someone else into this? It was a reminder as to why he hesitated to tell anyone, his brother included. Aya had been there, though, in the very short time they knew eachother, She was there to witness him dealing with his first encounter and had a front row seat to the second. "Please..."

Aya paused, finally looking up at him. She looked at his eye, half blue, half crimson. She remembered that horrible face, the feeling of something dark and inhuman, the fire. But... this was Drake. Guilt seeped through her. Drake had listened to her, supported her... he'd been the first person she'd ever really shown her power to. And for a moment... it'd been nice. Safe, almost.

Finally, she gave a small nod.

"I'll... I'll see you later. I promise." Timid sincerity rang through her words. "But right now I need to go."

Uná O’Brian

Location: Ashford’s Office; Pool

Interaction: Ashford @ShieldsOfWar & Sally @BoyMom69035

Uná watched Elijah shut the door softly as she turned to put her bag down. She was still in her workout outfit and had it actually sunk into her head that she was in the Headmaster’s office. “My apologies sir had I known I’d be here I’d have taken the time to change.” It was lame she knew but the silence was getting to her.

Dr. Ashford’s back was to Uná as he stood in front of the bay window. His head turned to her slightly as she spoke to him, then it turned back to the view. He remained silent for another moment before turning towards her fully and approaching with a calm smile. His hair was disheveled, and 5 o’clock shadow prominent on his face.

“Ah. No need to worry about any of that O’Brian. I promise not to take up too much of your time. I just wanted to discuss something with you that I have been working on. Something that I believe you may find interesting.”. He walks over to his desk and motions for Uná to have a seat.

Uná sits as indicated her curiosity piqued. “That sounds ominous. But I'll bite.” She tries to stay still, and makes a good show of it for about a full minute then she lightly taps her fingers on her thigh.

Ashford sits in his oversized leather chair, one leg crossed over the other. His eyebrows raise as he looks at the young lady with anticipation. A smile actually creeps up on his normally stoic face. “So. I have been working on something for mutants like you Ms. O’Brian. Something that can potentially change your lives.” He smile grows as a childlike wonder takes over his eyes. You haven’t seen this side of him before, until now he has always been reserved and withdrawn. “It is a medication that I have nicknamed Vivify. It can help you take your dormant abilities and bring them alive.”

Uná bit her lip in thought. She had to admit she was intrigued. But… there was always a but… she also didn’t want to rely on drugs. She wasn’t sure about this. What if she was just broken? Wait? What? That made as much sense as staying on the beach when the waves were sick. “That sounds too good to be true. What if I find out that I have more than just manipulation of illusions? Is this even safe? Will I have to take them forever? I know I want control of this. It feels like an ocean inside me that I have to fight every minute of everyday. Making it more would be like melting the ice caps and raising the level of the ocean. I’m not sure I could handle that.”

Ashford leans back in his chair with understanding, albeit a little deflated. He had expected her to want to unlock the full potential of her abilities...to bask in the greatness of her X-Gene. Sometime he forgot that not everyone was as ecstatic about their gifts. He smiled warmly. “Your concerns are fair. It would be reckless for you not to question things. I assure you though, that we are equipped to help you control the oceans within you. I assure you that your safety is my number one concern and I would not do anything that I didn’t absolutely believe was best for mutant kind.” He leans forward again and pulls the bottle of pills from his jacket pocket. “Vivify is not addictive. You will not have to take them forever. It is meant to work with your body and mind to unlock your X-Gene and hand control over to you. Eventually you will be able to do this without the pills. They are only a tool to get you there.”

Uná debated. I do want control and if this helps it’s a step in the right direction to achieve it… Uná looked Ashford in the eyes and smiled. “I’m in. I trust you and I want the same things. Besides I want to be able to look at my... gifts as something to be used not pushed aside. Afterall if I don’t see it that way how can others? Love yourself then others. So how long does it take to affect me?”

... ... ... ... ... ... ...

Uná had been out late last night running and had seen Sally’s door shut well after curfew. She wondered what Sally had been doing. Uná looked across the pool and spotted Sally. She waived and went to say hello. Uná lived in SPF a million and she was willing to bet that since Sally was a redhead she did too. She didn’t have all the freckles that Uná had but; what can ya say? Seeing Sally was great she needed to talk to someone before she burst. Uná was headed over to her. Sally looked really good in a black bikini. Uná did more swimming in the ocean and surfing you either wore a wet suit or you wore something that wasn’t going to come off. It was limiting and looking down at her multicolored suit in neon colors she shrugged.

“Hey Sally!!! How’s the water?”

What was it about swimming that was so calming? Or was it just her? Plus, the fact that there was no one out there, made it easier to calm down, rather than had there been others there. Had there been, she would have been rowdy and loud, full of jokes and pushing people in. But this, this was just as fine as well. She finished the lap she had been on before slowly coming up out of the water. She took a deep breath and planted her feet on the floor of the shallow end of the pool, standing up. Bringing her hands up, she wiped the excess water from her face just as she heard someone calling her name.

Her hands dropped and she looked around wide eyed in search of said person. She grinned and waved when she saw who it was. It was that spunky, crazy, sweet Uná. Sally giggled and extended her arms, letting her hands float atop the water.

”Hey,” she called back as she took several slow steps forward. ”It's perfect, come in.” Sally brought her arm up and waved the other red head in, noticing that she had her swimsuit on.

Uná smiled and dove into the deep end. Quickly popping up beside Sally. She was treading water beside her. “Uh...I need some girl talk. Think we can scare up Khloe after I explain this to you?”

Sally had ducked down under the water just far enough that she could pull some of the water into her mouth, then stood back up. As soon as Unà popped up next to her, she playfully spit the water at the other redhead, like a fountain. She giggled, but her face quickly changed into a more serious mask when she mentioned she needed some girl talk. ”Yeah sure, what's on your mind?”

Unà looked away. “Boys…” Unà looks back at Sally and smiled weakly. Sally was fun to be around and was naturally upbeat. Unà was comfortable around her and she needed to talk about Nathan and...Nikolai...err...Nik.

Sally couldn't help but grin at Uná’s single word. She wanted to talk to her about boys? Hell, Sally had only ever had a few boyfriends, and only one was serious. In all honesty, she wasn't sure if she'd be any help, but she would definitely try. ”Nathan and Nik,” she asked, putting emphasis on the word ‘and’. Of course, she couldn’t be one to judge. With a chuckle, Sally nodded her head and turned her body to face Uná. ”I'll do my best. Fire away.”

Uná looked stunned. “Am I really that transparent? Oh fates if you see it then they definitely do.” Uná got a little upset and it showed as she treaded water more vigorously. “I’m really not good at this mystery female crap. I’m not experienced and I just had my first kiss and I liked it and now I’m confused. I feel like a horrible person. I liked the kiss then thought about the other one after it. I think I like both of them and I hate myself for it.” She glared at the couple of girls who looked up from the lawn chairs that were suntanning and now listening closer. “Mind your own business or I’ll tell Temperance you were talking shit about her. Repeat anything and I’ll set her on you. Scram.” Uná swam over to the edge of the pool and pointed back to the school forcefully.

The girls look wearily at Uná and move away from the pool. Uná looks at Sally again. “I wouldn’t really but I still don’t want to deal with the rumors. I have no idea what I’m doing here. I feel like a quimby who’s caught inside a gnarly bomb headed for a wipe out.”

Sally remained still, giving Uná all of her attention, listening to everything She decide to tell her. And although she had heard of similar circumstances, she had never been in one quite like that before. Before she could say anything though, Uná suddenly threatened a couple of other girls who had decided they wanted in on the juicy topic at hand. Sally couldn't help it. She put her hand over her mouth, snickering as she listened to Uná as she threatened to get Temperance on them if they said anything. Once Uná turned back around, Sally straightened up, clearing her throat.

”Well,” Sally began as she thought for a moment. ”I have honestly never been in a situation like that, so all I can really do is make suggestions here.” She tapped her bottom lip with her finger and looked down at the water in thought. ”Ok… this probably isn't what you wanna hear, but this is the best thing I can come up with right now. What does your heart want?” Yeah, it was cheesey as hell, she knew that, but it worked. Sally held her hand out, palm up. ”Do you want Nik? Bit of an attitude. Really really cute. Has a sweet side… and loves explosives.” Sally grinned and chuckled at her last bit, then put her other hand up in the same manner. ”Or, do you want Nathan? Sweet. Shy. Kinda mysterious. Also kinda cute.”

She moved her hands up and down in a weighing motion, raising an eyebrow at Uná. ”You Just gotta figure out what it is you want, and are willing to stick with. Don't feel bad about liking two different guys, that's happened to every girl.” Ok so… remember when she said that she hadn't been in that situation? Sure, Sally thought Professor Pierce was hot, and so was Nik. Ruben was cute as hell. A lot of the guys at the school were good looking. In the end though, it had been Drake that caught her attention. He had that bad boy look to him, gorgeous eyes, tattoos, but he wasn't an ass. At least not that she had seen. Sally definitely had a thing for him, even though it had only been a couple days. Not that she'd let that be known just yet. Or had she already? Besides, she didn't know if he liked her anyways so. Them hooking up for one night didn't constitute as him liking her… even though he had said he did. That was probably the alcohol talking.

Sally shook her head, pulling herself out of her thoughts. ”Anyways, you just need to figure out which one you're willing to put up with for a while. And of course, they gotta feel the same way, or nothing works.” Sally really hoped she was helping. She he never really been good at this sort of thing.

Uná looked away and stared off into space for a minute. Looking back she grinned. “So I saw your door open and shut last night and I thought I saw you sneaking back into your room. So what’s his name? And if you say Nik or Nathan I will drown you.” Uná’s eyes blazed blue fire on that last sentence.

At first, when Uná looked away, Sally raised her eyebrows, hopeful that she had helped, even more so when she gave Sally the grin. But… that was short lived. As soon as she he mentioned her door being open, Sally's jaw dropped, though she couldn't help the smile she fought back. Sally drew her lips in a thin line and quickly glanced away. She debated heavily on telling her, and in the end, decided to. Uná had come to her for help about something kinda personal so, she felt like she could share hers.

”Drake,” she said as she caught Uná’s eyes, a blush creeping up her neck. ”It started out so innocent. I found him in the girls dorm hall and he had been drinking. What He he was doing there, I have no idea. So, I told him I'd walk him back to his room, just to make sure he got there all right.” Sally glanced off again, the events from that coming back full force. She grinned, biting her lip. ”And then he kissed me. One thing kinda lead to another…” Sally had trailed off, looking off into the distance, before slowly bringing her eyes back to Uná. She quickly shrugged and chuckled nervously. ”It was just a heat of the moment kind of thing that just… happened. Just a couple of people enjoying each other's company.”

Uná stopped treading water and almost drowned. “Shut up!!!!! I honestly thought you were out running like me. I was just teasing but now you have to tell me everything!!!!” Uná started treading water again as she laughed quickly. “What's it like? And Drake...meow. Nicely done.”

Sally couldn't help but laugh out loud at Uná’s enthusiastic reaction. Aww hell! I've opened Pandora’s Box she thought as she ducked down a bit and leaned back, walking backwards in the water. ”What was it like?” Sally thought for a moment, images of the night flashing through her memory. She suddenly stopped moving and stood up straight, the water coming up to her waist. ”It was like… it was like the triple x rated Red Riding Hood and Big Bad Wolf.” Sally laughed and looked at the other redhead. She felt a little ridiculous, and blushed a bit. ”Let's just say, that I may have a bit of an addiction problem now.” Although it was clearly meant as a joke, there was a hint of seriousness in her voice.

One month skip...

Whom did you forge a deeper bond with?
Did your powers grow? How?
Did you have problems with other students?

Everyone had weekly sessions in the Danger Room under the guidance of the staff. Which grew a bit over the month.

Good luck, and may the odds be ever in your favor.

Drake “D” Edwards

11:59pm

Dum-dum... dum-dum... dum-dum...
Drake stared at the alarm clock, the red digitized numbers glowing back at him. The rhythm of his heart was the only thing he could hear in the otherwise dark room. Bloodshot eyes blinked as the '11' turned into a '12'. A fierce, but silent determination kept Drake conscious, focused. There was one main objective at night these days. Stay awake.

He had methods for achieving this. On the nights where he had company, it was a little easier to stay occupied. Tonight, though, it would be more challenging. Sleep is inevitable. At some point, you can't push it off anymore. Best he could do, when crashing, is hope that he crashes so hard that he doesn't dream. There were no more dreams, per se, anyway. Just the same, exponentially intensive nightmare.

Drake pulled himself out of bed and walked toward the bathroom, shutting the door behind him before turning on the light. He looked at himself in the mirror, examining the stranger on the other side of the glass. One solid red eye, another red eye with just hints and accents of the blue color it once was. Nearly matching pupils just seemed like a foreign concept. All his life, he knew the face that stared back. Not so much these days. Dark pockets had developed under his eyes as he waged his new war against sleep. He looked perpetually tired. Forcing himself to look away, Drake turned on the faucet and splashed his face with water a few times before reaching into one of the drawers under the sink and pulling out a small black medicinal bottle. The label read 'NutraBio 100% Pure Caffeine'. He poured some pills into his hand, not even bothering to count them out anymore, and tossed them into his mouth before swallowing with a labored gulp. He was on Day 2 of no sleep. The crash was coming, as it always does. He gave his reflection one more glare before turning off the light and exiting the bathroom.

12:37am

Drake found himself on a treadmill in the gym. In black sweatpants, a red tanked shirt and dark sneakers, Drake ran at a fairly casual pace, allowing his mind to focus in on the music blaring out of buds in his ears. His eyes stared out into eternity as he continued to move, thinking about almost nothing. Just letting his body go on autopilot. It was his method of centering himself. This was his conscious rest, his mental palate cleanser.

2:20am

Drake sat on one of the benches that lined the courtyard. In his lap was an open book and to his side were 2 more stacked upon one another. He read under the night sky with the flickered glow of his fiery hand, using the flame like a flashlight to illuminate the pages as he smoked on a cigarette. The page he was on currently was discussing the history of the Neyaphem, an ancient horde of demonic humanoid mutants from biblical times. There was a small illustration of one of them. With pointed ears and an angular composition, the caption below it read "Azazel".

4:02am

Drake waited in the back of the grocery store parking lot, leaning back against his motorcycle. He pulled out his phone and looked at the display. His guy was already 2 minutes late. As he stared at the asphalt below his feet, he unexpectedly, involuntarily yawned. His eyes went wide as his blood pressure began to rise. Yawning isn't good. It wasn't long before he saw the headlights of a black Lincoln Towncar with tinted windows. There was a small sense of relief as the vehicle slowed to a stop in front of him. Drake stood up and approached the window, reaching in his pocket for his wallet.

"Wussup, D!" The driver was not someone Drake would consider a friend, but he always talked to Drake like they were old buddies.

"You're late," Drake said sharply before pulling out a wad of bills and passing it to him. With one hand, the driver took the money and with his other, he passed Drake a small white plastic bag.

"Yeah, yeah," he said, shrugging off the comment. "Don't party too hard, now, brother. Or do!" Amused with himself, the driver could be heard laughing as the window rolled up and the Lincoln took off. Drake put the baggy in his pants pocket and moved back to the motorcycle. He started the ignition and revved the bike a few times, letting the sudden loudness stimulate his senses before taking off in the opposite direction.

5:16am

He had about another 45 more minutes before anyone else typically wanted to use the pool. His clothes were in a pile on one of the lounge chairs as he stood in just boxers, submerged in the water from the waist down. Drakes hands were extended outward, his palms pointed ahead as he tried to regulate his breathing and concentrate. Beads of sweat formed on his brow as he attempted manipulate his composure, summoning whatever amount of aggravation he had in his emotional well to try and transform it into flame. With a snarl and finally a primal shout, fire spewed out his hands. The reflection from the water's surface make it look like 4 streams of flame were dancing in front of him. Though he managed to summon the fire, there was no aim or precision in his execution. It was something he was trying to improve upon. Right now the fire came forth like a wild water hose, serpentining in a multitude of directions. It was why he chose to train in the pool while others were just beginning to wake up. It would take much more training to grasp the full sense of control he needed to use his power effectively, though. Luckily Drake was just full of free time these days.

6:29am

Drake arrived back in his room just in time to disable his alarm clock before it went off. He put his white baggy away in the drawer of his night stand by the half-empty bottle of whiskey, a box of condoms and a fresh pack of smokes. It was essentially his drawer of sin. He then moved back into the bathroom with a fresh set of clothing, discarding his sweats and tank top for a pair of black denim jeans and a white button up shirt with long sleeves that he rolled up to his elbows. He combed his disheveled hair back into place, the water from the pool having left it in disarray, before giving the stranger in the mirror one last look.

Time to start the day.

Why Me?

Api’s Fight Theme
Till I Collapse

Api’s Friends

Api’s day had been another day of joy as his research into gravitic effects had resulted in the hardware team finally designing an electronic version of his own ability to detect anomalies so small they were once thought of as only esoteric exercises of thought. His physics teacher was delighted because with the new scanner he could begin mapping the trash that cluttered near earth orbit for a pet project of his.

Having finished his required studies and having few personal connections at the institute other than Sally and from what he’d seen of she and Drake were closer and as such had the older man to lean on so he hopped on his bike and peddled to the nearby Mall to meet with the girls.

Hanging with Lacy, Jan, and Carla

They were waiting for him by the rack he always locked his bike to each wearing their Alameda Gymnastics T-shirts and shorts and as soon as he stepped away from his bike they each hugged him ”Sæll Api” they said in greeting using the little they understood of his language.

”Hello my friends, looks as if you’ve an event this weekend by the wearing of the team shirts” he said with a smile

”Its a big one this time Api and we were wondering if you’d come and cheer us on” said Jan grabbing his right arm and clutching it close to her body.

Then as usual Carla grabbed the other arm and hugged it close making Api feel as if they were attempting to restrain him gently.

”We brought goodies” Giggled Lacy holding up a shopping bag.

So the girls pulled him over to tables that lay outside of the mall under the shade of trees and Lacy pulled out first a ticket to the event they said would place him close to their team’s benches. Next came a Gold T-shirt just like theirs which they insisted he change into to make sure it fit.

Api used being in gym settings and lacking the normal body consciousness that plagued others stripped off his shirt exposing his well muscled form that drew sighs from his friends as he wiggled into the gift shirt finding it snug but acceptable.

”It sure looks good on you Api too bad you can’t join our team; we’d love to have you” purred Lacy as she put her palm on his chest.

”I just can’t get over how hard your muscles are; its like what you’d expect a panther’s body to feel like”

”Dios mio Lacy, down girl” said Carla as she reclaimed his left arm followed by Jan taking his right

Api thought it was funny how they were always teasing him and acting so possessive; if he didn’t know better he could assume they were his actual GFs but dismissed it as silly. Three pretty girls who wanted him was more like some fantasy you might read about in one of his former roommates magazines.

It wasn’t that it wasn’t a fun fantasy but it was just a fantasy three girls at once was a bit much so he laughed as he slid away from the two gentle pythoness that held his arms.

”Come Kærustu (GFs) lets go get smoothies my treat” He said with a laugh though puzzled by a look of disappointment Carla and Jan wore.

Oblivious to the real reasons for their expressions he thought they were just happy being physically affectionate and he’d disturbed them so he offered them each their previously claimed arms. Then as they walked into the mall he was mildly shocked when Lacy wrapped her arms around his waist pressing her body close to his in a distracting manner.

So as he walked to the food court he tried to control his base self who was aroused by the chesty jewish girl who seemed to be trying to playfully embarrass him. Luckily for him Carla and Jan got Lacy to join them as they released his arms before he was further embarrassed by an involuntary response of his body.

Having a smoothie with friends

Once they’d all gotten a drink they were sitting as a group which soon grew with the addition of Jessica, Mike and Merle who were also members of the Alameda Gymnastics team talking about the event coming soon and gossip.

Merle turned and said to Api ”Don’t look now Api but here come your fans the Johnson Jocks”

Api turned and looked in their direction and sighed. There were 8 of them and Clive Habersham their leader had 3 20 dollar bills clutched in his right fist as if they were weapons.

”Yo! Monkey boy ya cover a C-note?” the tall blond Jock demanded. He hoped Api couldn’t cover the bet as if that was victory but they’d played that game before with Clive and the other boy had proven a bigger pain.

Reaching into his pocket Api drew out his wallet and handed Janet a crisp 100 dollar bill then walked over to stand under one of the braces that were like a horizontal bar between two columns at the edge of the food court. Another boy, a big muscled boy; a heavy boy stood under the bar.

Api waited bored while the other boy handed his coat, things from his pockets, and shoes to his buddies who encouraged him to win. He was clearly a weight lifter and football player which got Api to thinking about where he and the Alameda gym team were going to go on the 100 dollars.

The signal was given and both boy leap up and grabbed the cool painted steel bars, the football player wiggled to get comfortable in his one handed grip Api grabbed his without even over shooting the target knowing that was an unnecessary expenditure of energy. Hands that had grown strong on rings, horse, and bars, worked hauling net in the Grand Banks or climbing the rocky terrain of Iceland locked like the jaws of a pit around the steel.

Some of the food court workers who were on break or working for a permissive manager or the managers of the food stalls joined in the spectators who had stopped to watch. The football jock tried to stare Api down unaware that the smaller boy was in a sort of meditative state reliving other times he’d just hung around but the scenery was nicer and the real world a blur.

He ceased to exist in real time to even perceive it passing just a mind at rest who was waiting to hear his challenger drop to the tiles which actually came quicker than he’d expected. So Api only released the bar at 1:31 minutes dropping to the tiles after a visual confirmation.

THe jocks pouted and left with the promise that they would beat him next time.

Not interested in being known as a gambler Api and the team went to Karaoke and Scoops leaving Api a net gain of 6.23 from the jocks and their bet.

Heidi Williams woke early. She always woke early. Something about her mutation meant that she slept between three and five hours a night, but always woke up incredibly well-rested. She couldn't understand why. She had considered reading up on psychology, but then she knew she'd constantly be trying to read people, and social interactions were difficult enough with this power. All the considerations. All the different things she could say. The slightest word change, tone change, would affect how her sentences were perceived. Every time she tried to talk, all she could feel anymore was overwhelming self doubt as her own brain constantly tried to second-guess her. That's what many other students here had failed to grasp in the few days she had been here and attending regular classes. Heidi wasn't clever, or wise. She knew very little about the world, though finding out would be an easier task for her than most. But that was it. Heidi wasn't intelligent. She was an information sponge. She was a human calculator. This mutation was more a hindrance than a help.

But maybe studying here could change that. If she could be taught how to bring things into focus, she would have less of a problem. Her power was incredible, she had to admit. She was constantly observing her surroundings. Even if she wasn't listening to a sound, or looking at an item, if she saw or heard them for even a second, she will remember them forever. In a way, it greatly reduced the need for conversations. She could just listen to them talk to other people and learn as much. Besides, it was hard to strike the balance of holding back enough that nobody thought she was showing off, but nobody thought she was patronizing them. Thus, she had garnered a reputation for doing both these things. She hadn't been openly confronted or bullied, and everybody was very kind and accommodating. Some students even used sign language with her, a gesture that was incredibly welcome. But when they didn't think they were in danger of the little deaf girl hearing them, she'd read their lips, and she'd watch them complain about the genius show-off teacher's pet. It hurt.

She hadn't even been here a week, and as she made her way down to the Main Hall...wait. When had she gotten dressed? Showered? Dried her hair? Put her makeup on? Had she been thinking throughout all of that? Was she on autopilot during her entire morning routine? Yes. Thinking back, she could now remember doing all of that. She could even re-taste her breakfast. This mutation was too much. Would it get better as she became used to it? Possibly. At least, she hoped so. But could one ever get used to this? Sitting down on a bench in the main hall, she looked around, and decided to try a little flexing. A test of her powers. Could she guess the time to the minute without looking at any timekeeping devices?

Heidi looked out the widow, squinting at the sun, and imagined a giant protracor sitting on the earth between here and the sun. Okay, that was the angle between the sun and the ground, but that wasn't enough. What else? she then turned her attention to a vending machine nearby. She focused on the air bubble inside a single bottle of water contained withing the machine, using it as a spirit level, and adjusting the picture in her mind. Brute-forcing her way through all her calculations, she then arrived at a number. She checked her watch. Three minutes out. Huh. Maybe there was some kind of physics knowledge to do with orbit or rotation or something, that she didn't know. This experiment partly affirmed to her that her mutation alone didn't make her smart. But guessing the time three minutes out, from scratch. That was nevertheless impressive. She felt a bit better now.
