Their hard work? What hard work? Alayna thinks. The only hard work her parents have done for her with her craft is making her despise it sometimes. Even if she isn't up for it, she has to set aside time every day to practice her magic, especially the aspects of it she sucks at. She is, after all, to serve as a reminder of why keeping the Castellanos around is an outstanding idea for the Elders. She didn't tell Rebecca any of this, though. There were some things better kept within the family.

At the mention of the allure of the wellspring's power, Alayna nods her head in agreement. Her control of the elements is already so strong. So with the wellspring, there will probably be nothing she cannot do with her talent.
"Hey, everyone's got stuff that they're good at, so there's no reason to envy me, " The blonde replies, pointing a finger at the scar on her arm, "I don't always get it right either." And that is why she's never felt the need to cover her physical imperfection. Even she needs to remember that it isn't always going to be easy, especially with how often she likes to experiment with the physical world.

In answer to her question about having anything up her sleeve, Alayna deadpans, "If I told you, I would have to kill you." She takes a sip of her lemonade then, avoiding Rebecca's eyes as to not give away her feelings. Truthfully, she doesn't like to talk about the things she tries to do with her magic, as she can be reckless with it.

"I'm not up to anything bad if you're thinking that," she says to be safe.

"And I'm Cassandra," the blonde said with a grin. "If you ever need someone well-versed in the Dark Arts, come find me. I admit, it's usually not the most in-demand of magical talents, but it does have its uses." She took the flask from Kate, noting the deep green color of the contents. As she pocketed it, she gave the potioneer a gentle, almost imperceptible nod. "Thank you, Kate. You're right; these will help me create some pretty cool new spells, or at least travel with them."

She then gave Jeremy the once-over; it didn't exactly hurt that he was attractive in an off-beat sort of way. "No offense meant, Jeremy, but it's somewhat odd to see a newcomer here for the first time at the initiation. Honestly, you've got me kind of curious. Why join the Dying Branch instead of another coven? Why us?"

Uaithne frowned when Maggie said he'd gotten the page wrong. He was sure he'd checked the page numbers before scaring her... Unless he had turned the book to the page he was on in Rothfuss' Wise Man's Fear... He might have done that on accident. Oops. Oh well, it was done now. He hoped down lightly, making remarkably little sound.

"Well, maybe not in so many words. But actions always speak louder than words, and you have been avoiding us since you arrived. Though I do understand preferring books to chatter. But it's initiation day, tonight we're going to be real witches! Doesn't that make you at least a little excited?"

Uaithne walked beside Maggie back towards the tables, he figured he could at least keep the adults from nagging her, or him, by lending the flimsy appearance of having an interesting conversation with another initiate. It seemed like the appropriate thing to do... He gulped as the hair on the back of his neck stood straight up.

That meant Great Aunt Brigid was watching... He hoped she would be enjoying the stronger drinks and wouldn't have extra tasks for him to do during initiation. She was a great aunt, or so the pun went, but her training was... Intense. She was very much a believer in trial by fire... which usually meant a literal magical inferno... Thankfully they were nearing the tables of food and initiates. Hopefully close enough to be safe from sudden conflagration...

She suddenly felt frozen in place, a bundle of nervous energy settling into her gut as Kate spoke up about wanting another drink since the last one hadn’t been all that good. Hana could only assume they misunderstood what she had said to Iris, thinking she was asking if she would like a drink instead of whether she liked the drink or maybe the second part about the first drink not being good was their answer to her question? It was confusing to say the least. Normally, it wouldn’t be a problem to see if Kate would like her to get something else from the table for them but now she wasn’t sure what to do since she couldn’t just ditch Iris before she even answered or begun a conversation with her. However, she didn’t want to be rude and act like she hadn’t heard Kate either. Luckily, she didn’t have long to worry about what decision to make as Kate turned their attention onto Cassandra, starting a conversation of their own. She could have given a sigh of relief and instead, simply smiled at Kate before swinging her attention back to Iris.

Iris was looking at her, headphones now in her lap as they had a small moment of awkward silence as she took a sip of her drink before speaking. Hana nodded as her smile brightened, agreeing that most of the drinks being pleasant but the nod slowed, her features now showing notable confusion as Iris continued to speak and took a brief glance at the other girls cup. ’Did she just say…., Hana thought for a moment before pressing her lips together before placing her hand to her mouth as she desperately tried not to laugh but ended up desperately failing. She felt the giggles bubble up and couldn’t hold back the few that popped out as she spoke,”W-What kind of t-tea or soda h-have you been drinking t-that tastes similar?” Hana took a deep breath, calming herself before smiling softly as she continued,”They might have some but I am not really sure. I wouldn’t be surprised considering all the different teas and sodas I saw earlier. Anyway, hi Iris and also, Sprite...you have been drinking Sprite.”

At least no one could say Iris wasn’t herself and that was part of the reason she liked talking to her. Sure, she could be a little quirky and very confusing at times but it was always entertaining to talk to her. She looked over to Kate who was now speaking to the new initiate, Jeremy and kind of felt sorry that he didn’t even know the mess he had stepped into. He had almost been set free but Alex had stirred the pot accidentally and now had Summer’s interest, since she was trying to draw Charlie in also. Hana stood up, looking back to Iris before glancing at those near her. ”Hey Iris, I was thinking of getting myself a refill on my drink. Do you want me to bring you back anything?”, she asked, waiting for an answer before grabbing her red solo cup and heading for the drink section of the table. Honestly, she might have introduced herself to Jeremy but the last thing he needed was to be swarmed with people and also, if that was Summer’s reaction by just having Alex chat with him then the more might not be the merrier in this case.

"Listen, Alayna. I've heard all the damn rumors... And I don't believe them for a second. If you meant to betray us, you'd have done it already." Rebecca took a long, slow sip of her water. "No offense." Eventually, Rebecca found her way over to her assigned seat, smack between Iris and Alex. She was rather comfortable with both of them, but after all these years, there wasn't anybody she really wasn't on good terms with.

"Sorry I'm a little tardy, you two. But then again, it is appropriate for a medium to be late, you know?" She giggled a tad at her own hideous pun, then sighed. "Honestly, I just want today to be over. All this anticipation, wondering what the elders have in store for us- it's playing all sorts of hell with my nerves."

As the initiates chatted, insulted, and brooded, something was happening on the southern edge of the field. Several witches clad in the black-and-gold robes of the coven wheeled a small podium out of the house and onto the grass. They fiddled with a microphone and a speaker for a bit, not actually utilizing the speaker but ensuring that the microphone was at a comfortable height and that the speaker would actually work. This happened progressively over an hour or so- they seemed to be taking their time in getting the equipment out.

Finally, just as the sun was beginning to set in the sky, a woman stepped up to the podium. Any member of the Sisters of the Dying Branch coven worth their salt would immediately recognize her as Sister Deborah Ledoux- the head of the coven. Most know her as a charismatic, loving, and motherly leader, yet also a scary woman with a real temper. Today, she stood in the light of the setting sun confidently, straight-backed. She was a rather middle-aged looking woman. Her lightly curled brown hair had chunky streaks of gray running through it and hung down to her back. For all intents and purposes, she appeared to be in her late 40s, although her eyes betrayed something entirely different. They were ageless, infinite. Anyone would be hard-pressed to guess her true age.

She tapped the microphone, creating a feedback that reverberated through the field. Almost immediately, every witch at the party shut their mouths and turned their eyes to the podium, watching attentively. Sister Deborah surveyed the field for a few moments, letting the silence simmer before she spoke.

“Good evening my fellow witches,” she began, voice silky and confident.

“Good evening, Sister Deborah,” the crowd echoed back.

She smiled, pleased. “Today we gather to celebrate the summer solstice- the longest day of the year. It’s also when spring turns to summer. But enough about astronomy.” This elicited a chuckle from the audience. “Today is a holy day for us witches. We spend most of the year fending back the night; defending humans, magic, and our own livelihoods from the creatures that lurk in the dark. But today is our day to celebrate! To gather amongst ourselves, to have a bit of fun, and to eat good!” Several people cheered.

“But this gathering also has another purpose,” continued Sister Deborah once the cheering had ended. “Every three years, we welcome new witches into our ranks! Witchlings turn to full-fledged witches. They take on the blessings of our wellspring and join the ranks of the hundreds of witches in our coven defending the world from ever-encroaching evil.” Sister Deborah gestured to the initiate table. “Tonight is meant to welcome our children into full-fledged witchery and into adulthood. Please, everyone, give a worthwhile welcome to our witchlings. They are truly brave and dedicated to embark upon this path.”

At this, all the witches in the field (including Sister Deborah) turned to the initiates’ table and began clapping and whooping. Some particularly proud parents wiped tears from their eyes, and other, younger witchlings looked at them with envy.

Once the applause died down, Sister Deborah began speaking again. “I call our witchlings brave and dedicated for a reason. As we all know, this path has its dangers and downfalls. So many of our fellows lose their lives each year. That’s why I would like to take a moment to honor our fallen.” The crowd went silent again, a sad feeling seeping into the air. With a somber expression, she unfolded a piece of paper and began to read off names. “Phoebe Graves. Xiu Rossingeau. Marc Norwood. Helen Whitmore. Dylan Blackman. Elias Cross. Piper Blankley.” Once she finished, she folded the piece of paper back up and tucked it into the pockets of her robes. There were a few audible sniffles from the crowd. “By keeping up our fight, we honor those who died for it.”

She was silent for about 15 seconds, surveying the mood of the crowd again. Then, she clapped her hands together and smiled. “Well, on a happier note! Sunset is approaching. I think in about 10 minutes or so, actually. At sunset, the other elders and I will take the initiates down through the forest to the wellspring for the bonding ritual. The witchlings going through their rite of passage this year are…” She pulled out another, larger piece of paper. “Summer Abernathy. Iris Aderast. Calypso Barnes. Cassandra Black. Alayna Castellano. Uaithne Cináed Fearghal Orvar. Rebecca Delacroix. Dante Erie. Charles Hamlyn. Alex Holcroft. James Kelce. Juniper Krauss. Seren Gallagher. Reagan Graves. Dakota Lawson. Jeremy Lindall. Soren Lockhart. Erin McKay. Rowan Moore. Regina Norwood. Aaron Thornton. Kate Shuang. Hana Song. Arken Stone. Maggie Wilson. Chloe Wright.” Once she finished with the obscenely long list of names, she tucked the piece of paper back into her pocket. “If your name was just called, I’ll see you by the house in 10 minutes. Otherwise, please continue having a good time! I’ll see you all again in an hour or so with our new witches.” With that, she stepped down from the podium to furious applause and headed back into the house, evidently to prepare for the initiation.

Calypso’s lips twitched into a challenging smirk as Dakota spoke. “Oh, really?” she challenged, hands on hips. “Screw going back to the table. I’m way better at climbing trees than you. I’ll bet you ten bucks that I can get to the top before you.” She put her plate of food down on the grass and then held out her right hand as if to shake on it. But, before they could shake on it, a microphone feedback sounded from the southern edge of the field. Calypso turned her head and, seeing that Sister Deborah was speaking, shook her head subtly at Dakota. Tree climbing would have to wait for another day, it seemed.

She listened attentively to the speech. She clapped when she was supposed to, spoke when she was supposed to… she even blushed when the other witches started to applaud the initiates. Calypso felt a bubble of trepidation rise in her chest at the deadline- she hadn’t even eaten yet! And in 10 minutes… well, in 10 minutes, she’d be a witch. A real witch. As Sister Deborah finished, she had to balance herself on the oak tree for a moment, resting her hand on it and leaning against it.

“Well,” she said to Dakota, breathlessly, “I guess we should go and guzzle down some food?” She chuckled and removed her hand from the tree. “C’mon. We have, like, ten minutes.” Squatting down to pick up her plate and cup, Calypso walked back to the initiates’ table.

But, when she got there, there was… someone in her seat? A boy she had never seen before. Which was odd, considering she had seen nearly every person there before except for him. There weren’t usually many newcomers to the coven, especially initiates. She bit her lip. Oh boy. She didn’t want to be mean, but she also wanted to sit in her seat and eat. Even if it was across from Summer. So, she tapped him on the shoulder. Once he turned around, she said, “Uh, hi! I’m Calypso Barnes. It’s great to meet you and all, but you’re kind of sitting in my seat… so if you could find your own seat, that’d be great. You see, all of the seats have these name tags on them, and mine is right there.” She pointed to her name tag, spelling out her name in fancy cursive lettering. “I promise I’m not mad, but if you could, like, find your own name tag, that’d be great.” She ended with a kind yet confused smile.

Rowan had been sitting for a while now, mostly in silence. Not that she didn't like the people around her, just that they certainly were more sociable than her. In general, they seemed to have a lot more going on. She caught talks of college, which was a very daunting thought. While she was certainly more than capable of going, Rowan had planned to stay here in service of the coven. Maybe college could help out with that though. After all, she had barely been out of her town let alone state.

The speech from Sister Deborah was a good one and Rowan was more than happy to have the ceremony almost underway. "I think I will start heading over a bit early. Good luck everyone." She rose from her seat and begun the walk over to the house. On the way she passed by Kate Shuang, "good luck, you're going to need it." Again returning a cheeky smile to imply it was just banter.

After that Rowan proceeded toward the house where the group had been told to meet and waited.

Thanks, but I’ve got somewhere to be, I guess we can talk later. there was a very slight tint of sarcastic flirtation in her voice, she wasn’t actually hitting on Hana, was she? Oh well, it doesn’t matter. Since her elusive drink was somehow gone already, she started towards the house from the table everyone got clapped at. Later Hana. And Like that, Iris was gone. Walking towards the big old house alone in the late setting sun. At least she thought she was alone until a little gremlin crawled out of her pocket and up onto her shoulder...

”How’d you get in there, Corvus?” That was the name of a creature made of twine, wood and glass, that she created. A golem. She called him “Corvus” because of the crow feathers he kept getting stuck between the twigs in his legs. He was roughly 6 inches tall, and had a small, glowing blue vial stuck in his chest. That was his heart. Corvus didn’t have a face, but under Iris’s sleeve was a bracelet that let her talk to him. Come to think of it, the glow was a little off, probably the heart growing weak. ”Just don’t fall.” Corvus was one her the more permanent golems she made, he was cute, so she kept him. Looks like Corvus felt like seeing Iris become a proper witch. Maybe he wanted to meet the elders, or maybe not, because he has the mind of a puppy, and couldn’t speak.

After a few minutes of walking, with the little wooden golem’s legs dangling from her shoulder, bobbing like a toy, she finally arrived at the house. The sun was behind the roof, and it looked like she was the first one there. Corvus’ faint glowing heart shining into the dim field around her. She took a seat on the porch steps, waiting while putting back in her music.

Jeremy Lindall

Jeremy would've been lying if he said he wasn't at least somewhat put off by the reaction he got from the young woman he'd tried to talk to. He'd had a few thoughts of how it might go in his head, but he hadn't expected the first initiate he introduced himself to to outright pretend they didn't hear him. However, the slight irritation was pushed down, as he tried to think about it more reasonably. Perhaps something he'd said or done during his introduction had been considered rude amongst witches? God knows the two witches he'd spent the majority of his time with would never have pointed them out if they were.

Of course, simply thinking of those same two witches reminded him that he couldn't discount the idea that she was just messing with him.

He started leaning towards that second option when another initiate responded to his greeting. This one was thankfully far friendlier, although he did ask if he knew they weren't the elders. Naturally, he definitely did know this, having ensured that this was the initiates table before approa-

"Ah. I was too formal." He said quietly, more to himself than anyone else. Hannah had told him he had a tendency for that. He'd ignored her of course, as she was an embodiment of chaos whose idea of 'too formal' was anything less than complete anarchy. Perhaps he should have followed her advice a little more often after al-No. He couldn't let himself be lured away from the path of common sense just because she'd shown one example of sound judgement. Instead, he pushed the thoughts down and turned back to the young man, nodding as he offered to introduce him to some of their fellow initiates.

"Oh, thank you. That would be very helpf-"

And then he was cut off, as the initiate he'd first tried to speak to suddenly decided he was interesting enough to bother responding to, introducing herself as Summer. Thankfully, despite how it had seemed like she was ignoring him before, she was actually rather friendly now. Maybe she really hadn't realised he was talking to her... If so, then he actually felt a little bit bad about his earlier assessment of her. Perhaps it would be better to set aside any first impressions, wait until he'd had a little more time to figure out what kind of people they were. He did begin to wonder just how much of what she was saying was genuine when she forgot the nationality of one of the other initiates she 'knew everything about', a young man named Charlie, but it was possible she just didn't have the best memory...

After Summer, another initiate introduced themselves as Kate, claiming to be a potioneer, which was interesting. He had been interested in learning more about alchemy, but he'd never really had the chance, most of the other witches he dealt with focusing more on other areas of magic. He'd have to speak to her about that at some point.

"Thank you. It's nice to meet you all as well." He said, before turning to Summer. "Yes, I am completly new to this coven.. I did speak to a few of your senior witches during my transfer, but today is the first time I've actually been here."

He would have continued, but then the Head of the coven, Sister Deborah if he recalled correctly, began her speech. All in all, he agreed that it was rather good, and while not particularly formal, it was still a great deal better than the 'meetings' he'd grown accustomed too back in Oregon. He was a little concerned that he only had ten minutes until the initiation though. That wasn't enough time to really eat much of anything, so it might just be better to wait until after it was over.

He was brought back from his thoughts however, as he felt a tap on his shoulder, and turned to see another of the initiates, introducing herself as Calypso Barnes. He was confused when she brought up the name tag for each seat, as his had definitely been at this seat, but found himself struck by sudden confusion when he looked where she was pointing and saw that, just as she'd said, the nametag now had her name on it.

"That is... very strange. I could have sworn it said my name just before..." He said slowly, before getting up from the seat. "Either way, I'm sorry for taking your seat. My name is Jeremy Lindall, and I can only assume that this was part of some kind of prank..."

He sighed at that last realisation. He had hoped that moving to this new coven would, if nothing else, help him escape the constant pranks he had been subjected to at the hands of Hannah and her father... Perhaps, even if he didn't focus his entire opinion of each person around them, it might be wise to at least keep those first impressions of everyone in mind after all...

"Mm. Thanks Charles. I don't think I've ever spoken to her before..." He made a quizzical look before letting his attention drift again. Overhearing some idle conversation, Arken leaned back and propped himself up with his arms while sitting on the bench. Glancing over to Summer, she was practically the Queen Bee, or it would seems like she is styling herself out to be. As much fun as it would be to bring her down a notch, this is neither the time nor place for that. There would be plenty of other opportunities for that, Arken thought.

Eavesdropping on Summer's interaction with a newbie was interesting. It was so obvious that she was being sarcastic. She had no desires of getting to know the new kid. She is feigning kindness, almost too dramatically. Of course she has to throw in that her family has been a part of the coven for ages. It would not be a conversation with Summer Abernathy without her mentioning that. In reality, the Abernathys and Stones probably go back a long ways, being some of the more prominent families that have been a part of the coven. Sighing softly and rolling his eyes, he had half a mind to step in and interject as well.

Before that thought became reality, Sister Deborah stepped up and spoke to the initiates. Finally. The show was getting on the road. There were apparently quite a few initiates this year, with Arken being one of them. When Sister Deborah called out Hana's name, Arken felt the slightly flutter in his chest. How odd. Here is this girl who chose to hide on the fringe of the gathering, and for some reason she piqued Arken's interests. In any case, Arken got up and started making his way to the location Sister Deborah had mentioned.

On his way, he swept past Summer. As he did so, he leaned down and whispered to her "Leave the new kid alone, Abernathy." He said with a wink and playful smile. Continuing to make his way towards his destination, he brushed past Hana as well. "Hana, right? Well, I'm Arken. Good luck with the rest of the ceremony. I'll see you around." He gave her a wink as well, before turning and heading towards the gathering location Sister Deborah had announced to them moments ago.

Cassandra sat bolt upright when Sister Deborah started her speech. She knew exactly what this meant. After going through the usual motions, and a moment of silence for those who had passed, the coven's leader got to the point that the cursewright had been waiting for: listing the names of the new witches and telling them to meet for the ritual. With a grin on her face, she headed straight for the house, almost feeling light enough to fly. Almost- she'd leave the aerobatics to Dakota.

A few of the other witchlings were already there, and Cassandra caught sight of Iris. The other girl had been interested in golems lately; taking the phrase 'making new friends' a little too literally for her taste, but to each their own. She gave Iris a curt but friendly nod. "So, who's the buddy you've got over there, Iris? Somebody new?"

Charlie moved in his seat suddenly when he felt something poke his ribs, and he looked down to see that it was Summer's elbow. He had been only somewhat tuned in to the conversation that was going on next to him, being mainly focused on his food and making furtive glances at some of the other witchlings who were arriving and taking their seats at the table. He swallowed the okra that was in his mouth quickly and racked his brains to remember what he had heard Summer say to the new guy - who Charlie was planning to welcome to later after he had finished his food and on his own terms. But - he had been drawn into the conversation, and after 10 seconds of awkward silence, Charlie remembered what Summer had said and put on a decidedly more warm and genuine smile than the one Summer was wearing.

"Hm? Oh, yes... I'm from England... Herefordshire, to be exact, it's in the South. Gorgeously rural, very green. A lot like the landscapes here, but decidedly less mountainous, less remote." He smiled again, regarding Jeremy with a nod. "Anyway, welcome! I certainly understand it can be a bit daunting moving to the coven here, but I've found everyone sufficiently welcoming so far, you'll be fine." Satisfied with his input to the conversation, he went back to his food, finishing off the plate (which had been piled quite high with delicacies) just in time, as he saw some movement out of the corner of his eye and glanced over to see Sister Deborah strolling up onto the temporary podium.

Charlie watched her intently as she began her speech, tapping his leg up and down out of nervous anticipation and excitement. He glanced at some of his fellow initiates, who just by looking at them, Charlie could tell that they were feeling the exact same set of emotions that he was feeling. When Sister Deborah got onto the list of people that had fallen in the line of duty to the coven, the pace of his leg tapping became even faster. Work for the coven was life-threatening. That was a fact that Charlie unfortunately knew all too well. He glanced at the crowd, where he briefly spotted his mother, who was sitting and listening to Deborah amongst the other middle aged female witches. He then put his own attention back on Deborah.

He took in a sharp breath when his name was called out, then the speech was suddenly over with the instruction that they should all be at the house in 10 minutes. Charlie looked back across the table. A couple of people were already making their way over. He turned to Summer. "You want to start heading over?" He glanced at the others on the table, feeling the need to invite someone else along in the short walk to the house. Calypso was having an incident involving her seat, and Charlie had the good sense to be aware of the fact that she didn't really like Summer. His leaned forward and looked down at the end of the row, his eyes falling at the quiet blonde girl right at the very end, who was clutching a book. "Maggie! Would you like to come and walk to the house with me and Summer?"

Dakota had a determined grin on and was just about ready to destroy all in her path on her way to the top of the tree when she heard Sister Deborah's remarks. Her fingers still curled around a protruding piece of bark, she listened quietly to Sister Deborah's remarks, placing her right foot solidly against a nice divot in the tree. She was about ready to take off and start climbing it when Sister Deborah told the young witchlings that they had to be inside in 10 minutes. "Ten minutes? Bullshit," Dakota said in irritation, a crestfallen look on her face. She liked climbing trees. Shaking her head in disappointment, she nodded in response to Calypso's comment. "Right...I'll be honest, I'm not feeling all that hungry right now," Dakota said, looking down. She had accidentally knocked her food to the ground and was not ready for the shame of having to grab seconds. "Catch you inside, Callie!" she said to the girl before trekking off to the other side of the table, grabbing the tattered leather tote bag that was currently sitting on the chair in front of her name tag. She opened the bag, grinning with surprise as she looked inside. "Woah!" she exclaimed with a growing smile, looking as though she had just struck gold as she opened the bag. Now peeking its head out of the bag was a silver-black striped ferret. Kota grinned playfully as she took the ferret out of the bag, hoisting him up to her shoulder. "Astro! How did you sneak in there? You shouldn't be going into such a little space, silly, I wouldn't want you to get hurt!" she scolded playfully, as the ferret simply kept looking ahead, clearly disinterested in Dakota entirely.

Dakota took a few steps away from the table towards the large house. "This is the coven house, Astro, you're going to be staying here for a little while. Isn't it big?" Dakota cooed as she lifted Astro from her shoulder and pointed him towards the Coven House, like she was Rafiki and he was Simba from the Lion King. "You just have to make sure you don't make a mess and don't try to run off-...ASTRO!" Dakota's voice rose in alarm as Astro, deciding he no longer wanted to take part in this nonsense, slipped through Dakota's fingers, hitting the floor as soft as an acrobat would, before booking it towards the Coven House, obviously wanting to explore on his own terms. Dakota rushed after him. "Astro! Come back, stupid!" Dakota commanded in vain as she chased after her ferret, who was moving quickly across the grass towards the coven house. "Stop it, you dummy! You don't know where you're going!"

Astro was obviously not heading Dakota's advice, though, and zoomed towards the coven house, reaching the stairs that led to the house rather swiftly. Dakota hot in his tail, Astro swiftly scaled the steps, looking over at the girl sitting there, listening to music, a wooden golem on her shoulder. This last part got Astro's attention. Toy. The slinky polecat wound up before launching directly at the girl with the golem (most obviously Iris), quickly and very spontaneously scaling her arm before tackling the golem off, pinning it down like a chew toy and trying to wrap his mouth around its head.

Dakota had now caught up to her pet and was angrily scolding him. "Bad! Bad Astro! No eating other people's...doll things," she finished lamely, reaching down to stop Astro from gnawing Corvus' head clean off. Thankfully, Astro was not a godly ferret and could not chew his way clean through wood, but his teeth were fairly sharp. Dakota pulled the finicky ferret away, holding him close to her chest as she looked over to Iris. "Sorry about that, Curly," Dakota said a bit breathlessly as she squeezed Astro to her chest, stopping the restless creature from finishing the job. "He normally doesn't do that. Bad Astro!" she scolded again, her arms wrapped tightly around the squirming ferret. "Really sorry about that. If you need me to pay for repairs or something I definitely will. I know how much your, uhh, whosiwhatsits mean to you."

Rebecca listened to Sister Deborah's speech with interest. She let out a whispered "Thank you" when the coven's leader mentioned those who had passed in the previous year- she couldn't see any of their ghosts around, but it didn't hurt to give her respects. Finally, the moment arrived. Sister Deborah told them all to meet for the binding ritual, and she let out a very unladylike yelp of sheer joy.

The medium was absolutely off like a shot, making a beeline for the house. On the way, she saw Rowan heading there as well. "Hey, Rowan. Mind if I join you?" Without even so much as waiting for a response in her giddiness, she continued on. "Any idea what they're going to throw at us? I've asked a few of the spirits, out of sheer curiosity, but they've all been careful not to let anything slip out."

"Well Jeremy, I hope you enjoy this coven...Even if everything is creepy here." After Kate say that Jeremy, they almost jump when they hear Sister Deborah start talking into the microphone. This is probably the first time that Kate see Sister Deborah and she looks very mysterious like their mother once say, she also looks very ageless like the rumors from people say, Kate wonder what kind of skin lotion she uses. When Sister Deborah start calling everyone on the table, instead of feeling pride, Kate feels rather embarrass, they really don't want to be center of attention right now, they try to slide down a little bit from their seat, trying to disappear from the crowd eyes.

After Sister Deborah was done speaking, Kate quickly sat back up from their chair, when Deborah say that they have 10 minutes until she meet the others at the house, Kate sigh, there is no way in hell that Kate is waiting while any minute now, their aunt will start talking to them and Kate doesn't want that, it probably for the best that Kate goes to the house early. Kate was about to ask Cassandra if she want to go with them but it seems that she is talking to a another person and then smile at Rowan while she walking away. Kate shrug, got up from their sat and start walking toward the house

While walking toward the house, Kate spots two figures, Rowan and a other girl, Rebecca and they hear about her, the girl that can talk to the dead, Kate is really interested to talk to her from awhile but didn't due from study potions. "Hello ladies!" Kate say to the girls while walking right next to them "What this about talking to spirits? Are we are going summon Satan?" Kate jokingly say in a deep voice

It was just Summer being her typical self and he wouldn't expect anything less of her when Jeremy had introduced himself, interceding on his behalf for a possible escape if he wanted. It wasn't that he disliked Summer, she was like anyone else that when she was in a good mood it was a nice experience and when the reverse happened, the opposite was expected. What was surprising was that it wasn't often that he helped someone during their own ruts or was the cause of someone's displeasure but it seems like he was in this case. Despite what the surface may have said or didn't say, there was always more than what the eyes could see.

As during the end of the day came around with the setting of the sun on the horizon, it disguised the faint glow of Alex's own eyes alongside the fading daylight as subtle magic happened within him. It pulled on his heartstrings as the sacrifice was consumed in silence but the world ignited in color despite the darkening evening, strands of light connected people as they talked to one another, gathering to the meeting that they were called here for.

To say at the very least, there were many people gathered here today but it wasn't a subtle occurrence that around twenty or more of those light trails led away from the party in a direction away from where most of the guests came from.

'Is that perhaps where we are going later tonight?'

Thinking to himself quietly as his attention returned to the conversation in front of him, their words pulled aside as he watched, a pale pinkish light surrounded Summer as she talked to Jeremy whose own strand of light blue light mingled with several other ones. Who was-

Then the feedback of speakers cut cleanly through the air as the party grew quiet, his focus ruined as the magic unravel itself, blending the bands of light into the scenery around them as if the exposure of a camera was dialed down. He blinked several times as his mind stopped wandering, recognizing the voice of Sister Deborah as she began talking into the microphone as the start of a speech began. It detailed the plans that would happen tonight for the initiates but also confirmed where they were going, following the trail of lights that he saw earlier. Not long after Sister Deborah finished her speech, it seemed like the rightful owner of the came as Calypso stared confusedly at the scene. While correcting a mishap, she introduced herself warmly to the new initiate which wasn't an everyday occurrence since most of them knew each other already.

" Well that's five down out of the... twenty-ish people give or take that we are going to meet tonight. "

" If you haven't eaten yet Jeremy, want to head over to the food first? We have the ten minutes before we're whisked away for who knows how long it might take, so might as well. We could then tackle the ones at the house who arrived early if you're interested? "

He said amusedly with a grin to Jeremy, wondering if they could still make their rounds in that short of time or simply later when everyone was asked to meet up. It also wouldn't hurt if they were there a little early as well for whoever was there as prime targets to tack off the list. It also seemed that their conversation group was turning a tad bit bigger and bigger as more people were pulled in, which he didn't mind, as he added onto what Charlie had said nearby to spread the places where chips could be placed on the table.

" Same goes for everyone if you want to grab more food. I know for sure I'm gonna nab something light like the grilled squash and zucchinis that I saw earlier to hopefully hold me over for tonight if Jeremy here says yes. "

" Probably then going to join everyone else at the entrance after that if you all are interested in getting a small headstart afterward. "

He said earnestly to everyone as he turned to them so they were in sight. It was only polite to include everyone if they were interested but if they all came together as a group, he didn't mind again but just wanted to place the option on the table. Either way, even if Jeremey had other plans, Alexander himself didn't mind as he was already okay with being his chaperone for tonight unless the new initiate felt he was comfortable enough.

Rowan jumped a bit when her name was called from behind her. It was clear she had her head on a whole other trail of thought and the call had yanked her back to Earth. It was Rebecca, a talented witchling if Rowan ever saw one. A lot of witchlings, herself included, didn't even try mediumship due to the difficulty that came with it. But here Rebecca was seemingly adept with it. Rowan wondered if Rebecca would be able to contact her grandmother, but now was clearly not the right time.

"Hey, Rowan. Mind if I join you?" "Sure I don't see why no-" Rebecca wasn't waiting on a reply as Rowan was interrupted. "Any idea what they're going to throw at us? I've asked a few of the spirits, out of sheer curiosity, but they've all been careful not to let anything slip out." Rowan smiled as she was glad someone else shared her same level of excitement. She was, however, jealous she could share Rebecca's level of energy. But before Rowan could form a concrete reply, Kate joined in.

"Hello ladies! What this about talking to spirits? Are we are going summon Satan?" Rowan could help but let loose a very short burst of laughter before rushing to compose herself. Rowan had a professional look to hold up after all, and she didn't want to give Kate the satisfaction. Even though she had just done that very thing... 'Damn it Rowan' she thought to herself 'you are the best in your English class. Are you really going to get upstaged in jokes too?' "Well we were thinking about it, but I don't think Summer can hear us from here." This was delivered in a very off hand but joking fashion. Inside Rowan was proud of herself (even if she had to check back to make sure it really was out of earshot). 'Not today Shuang, not today'. "Haha as a matter of fact, we were talking about spirits. Apparently, they're keeping quiet about the initiation."

Rowan then returned her attention back to Rebecca. "Honestly, I'm not surprised they aren't letting you in on it. Initiation is a pretty important part to becoming a witch, any ghost that knows about it probably also knows to keep their lips sealed. Even my grandmothers reputation doesn't give me any exception I'm afraid. I'm going in just as blind as you, it's scary but we've been waiting our whole lives for it. What could go wrong?" Anyone paying attention could see Rowan was growing visibly nervous in the last couple sentences. But a wave of excitement once again flushed over her soon after and her demeanor greatly improved. This was helped by the view of the coven house that now stood before them.

It was vibe-town central on the porch until that rope-cat came and lunges at Corvus. Iris almost didn’t notice at all, but by the time she refisteted the fact that Corvus was on the ground, a girl had showed up to claim the creature. ”...Well, hi.” Corvus stood up on the ground, little more than a scratch or two on his body. Thankfully, the tiny glowing blue vial wasn’t touched at all. If that broke, Corvus would be nothing but a mess of twigs and grass. ”He’s fine- She picked him up and rested him on her shoulder again.-They’re tougher than that.” Golems could take virtually any kind of beating as long as they had magic in them.

”I didn’t know your...ferret? Like magic things. He’s cute.” Iris wasn’t actually sure if that was a ferret or some other noodle shaped mammal. Could’ve been a weasel for all she knew. Corvus’ little blue heart glowed like fireflies in the setting sun. It was only the size of the tip of Iris’ thumb, but it was shining like a tiny lamp. The magic energy wouldn’t fade for a while. She wasn’t even sure if Corvus would be allowed at the wellspring or not, she also wasn’t sure how he got in her shirt. Oh well.

Alayna looks up at Rebecca, blinking. To say she is surprised by the girl's defense of her and her clan is an understatement. She's heard the rumors before and, honestly, she hardly pays them any mind herself. They were only made because of the fear of the unknown, the fear of what her family could do. After all, no one else in the coven knows truly what happened to her original coven other than her own people and the Elders. And no one else needs to know, really. The past is the past.

It takes her some time to give a reply, digging into the rest of her food as she thinks of how to respond. Finally, "Thanks, I guess," is the best she can manage, giving the other girl a wave goodbye as she leaves to go to her assigned seat. Alayna's mind drifts back to her previous thoughts now that she's alone again, looking down at the one leg of chicken she has left on her plate. To eat it or not to eat it. That is the question. And her answer to it comes in the form of feedback from a microphone coming over the speaker near her, her eyes automatically flicking to its source.

Sister Deborah Ledoux, the most powerful witch in the coven and, thus, the head of it. Alayna has only ever spoken to her once before, the day she'd started her witch training. Yet, despite this day being so long ago, Sister Deborah's eyes still seem to be the same as it was back then. Full of wisdom. The kind of wisdom that makes her uncomfortable because of its strength.

Alayna hopes to be like that one day.

When people turn to cheer on her and her fellow initiates, she has to fight off the urge to duck and hide. The moment is quickly over, though, and as Sister Deborah calls all the names of the initiates this year, Alayna can't help but feel a little bad that she only recognizes a few of them. The witch tells herself that it's because of the sheer number of candidates this year but she knows better. She's never had the nerve to try and make friends of any of them, the small friendship she has with Rebecca being nothing short of a miracle.

Well, it's too late to change any of that now. With this thought, Alayna takes a bite of her last leg of chicken and dumps her plate in the nearby bin, satisfied for now with what she's eaten and no longer having the time for a second plate, anyway. She finishes her lemonade as well, throwing the cup away and making her way to the meeting place by the house. She finds a spot where she can get away with not interacting with anyone if she wants to, sitting on the grass and leaning her head against the wall.

Almost there, is the thought that drifts across her mind as her eyes close.

Uaithne Cináed Fearghal Orvar

Thankfully Great Aunt Brigid was quickly distracted by Sister Deborah, though Uaithne payed her opening statements little heed. He moved quickly, quietly, with a feral grin on his face. He found his bag, right where he'd left it. He tuned into Deborah's speech as she mentioned the witches lost. He thought of his dad, though it had been years now. He wondered if dad was watching, as he paused with the coven in a quiet moment of rememberance... Tonight Uaithne would be adding his name to a list, and every night there after... It might join his father's name, and so many others.

Uaithne slipped his pack on, as Sister Deborah continued her speech. He clipping the belt and chest binders and adjusting them until they sat snug. His bag contained mostly medical supplies, including a folding canvas stretcher. It also held the quick release holster for his modern replica production of the Gewehr 98, chambered in the popular 9.3x62 mm. The heavy rifle, nearly ten pounds, was just over 4ft in length which was comically oversized for Uaithne. His pack also held three quivers of twenty arrows for the bow Uaithne held, unstrung. He strapped a fourth quiver, that had been laying next to his pack, to his right thigh for easy access. Satisfied that he was ready, Uaithne moved to the designated starting point. He didn't say anything to anyone, and barely responded if anyone bothered... He was focused on the night ahead now.

The pack was heavy, but Uaithne had been training to carry twice the weight during his recent weekend adventures. He adjusted to the extra weight easily, and moved with confidence as Sister Deborah finished up her speech. He found a comfortable shadow to wait in, and listened to everything and nothing. Not bothering to pick out words, he instead caught tones and inflections... The group seemed to be in good spirits. Uaithne waited, his eyes closed, though smile played at the corners of his mouth still.
