The Wessex maneuvered closer to the new NC, and then noted that it was indeed, newer then his. Plenty newer, and it was decked out for anti-NC work. It had anti-armor missiles, aerial mine deployers, and gatling cannons, likely fitted with anti-armor bullets. Due to how it was moving, it likely had fully internal weapons as well, probably its' heavier armaments.

The red enemy NC was IFF'd as 'enemy' obviously, and its' name was apparently 'Bloody Champ', seems to be an independent. It didn't open comms as soon as that was available, which was... odd. It's just an unspoken rule that whenever NC's see eachother as enemies they at least chat for a second before blowing their brains out. Something about honor.

Blur prepped a demo-charge and planted it on the damaged Siege tank before rocketing away, and the Captain notified Swarm that the back-up was a negative for now, and he'd have to maneuver his glorified coffin to not crash too hard. The Mad-e quickly drifted over to the siege tanks as they continued firing, one exploding without her provocation due to a demo-charge, taking it out of the fight. The other-two backed up and began seriously panicking.

"Leader just exploded! Holy fuck, what do we do?! This isn't fair! I didn't sign up for this!", the one leading the Vulcan Tanks' crew ranted. "Calm the hell down, we can still make them pay for this! If we can't win, we'll make victory bittersweet. Continue firing, reload your cannons!". The tank crews got to work, reloading their artillery's heavy shells and vulcan gunpods, while their drivers hauled ass backwards, deploying the anti-laser smoke to buy them a little more time. While it didn't really work against physical weapons at all, it made them difficult to target through the fog.

The fog scattered Swarm's missile's aiming laser, making precise targeting impossible. However, the laser was still able to light up parts of the fog sufficiently to pose as a vague target for the missiles, which ended up flying into the fog at relatively random heights and angles, almost all missiles didn't hit anything and exited the cloud on the other side, slamming into the ground a few hundred meters later. A few of the missiles seemed to have hit something within the fog however, but whether what they hit was the ground or a tank was unintelligable through the thick fog. Joe fired the next volley as soon as he could, without using the dumb-fire mode; If the missiles entered the fog at a steeper angle, they would at least hit the ground, and the shockwaves from the blasts should at least keep the tank's crew scared. The gaseous products from the chemical reactions causing in the explosion should also lighten up the fog by spreading it over a greater area, at least a tiny bit.
Joe audibly sighed, when he was back he would have to get the Swarm a backup weapon, which was unaffected by the visual conditions. Even a tiny machinegun would technically fit, although not help a bit against the armor of NCs or tanks.

Jingo bobbed in and out of sensor range randomly, observing the distant NC, the craft, marked enemy by his his onboard computers, had not attacked yet, nor had it shown signs of aggression. He didn't want to appear like he was a push over, especially not in his smaller NC, he disengaged the safety mechanisms in his guns, two large metal sleeves dropped down from his guns, indicating that bullets could now come flying out of the barrels. Jingo checked his ammo, double checked and triple checked, everything seemed to be fine with his craft; he opened up comms with 'Bloody Champ', hoping that the hostile warning was just a misinterpretation by the computer.

"NC334B-7, Bloody Champ, vacate the train's exclusion zone or I will have to remove you by force, Wessex, over."

Blur rocketed away after the first tank went up in flames, and with good timing too. No sooner did the tanks deploy their smoke and evasive maneuvers was Swarm hailing round after round of missiles down at them. There was simply no way she could try to move in and engage the last tank through both the fog and the rest of the explosions, so instead she prepped more demo charges and once again took off in a wide arc around the mobile cloud of smoke.

"Moving into the tank's estimated path, watch your fire."

It took a while to clear enough of a distance to get an idea of where the tank was going as well as where in the cloud it might be, and the latter was more of a shaky guess than anything. As Swarm's artillery continued to rain down, she set a row of charges on the ground crossing the cloud's path. That done, she tore off again, this time taking to the sky to get a better vantage point. If the tank veered off its current path, her plan was foiled, and even if it didn't she'd have to guess when to detonate the charges once the cloud passed over them. Not a great plan, but given the circumstances...

The 'Bloody Champ' didn't even answer, and further moved in. It fired off its' shoulder mounted rocket pods at the train, which used its plasma-based point defenses to take out a good portion before impact. "Goddamnit, take them out, escorts. Make an example of them.". After its' barrage, it jinked to the left and began circling the train.

The Volkov Gunships got off their lazy asses and maneuvered into the fog, using the non-intended use of their jet exhuast to blow away portions of the smoke for easier attack. Immediately after, they flew out and fired an accurate stream of rockets at one of them, apparently taking out a track of the vulcan-equipped one, and severely damaging its' armor. Blur's plan was now much easier, and Joe's next barrage could be a bit more accurate. "We aren't completely useless!.. Scratch that, out of rockets.", they noted before half-retreating to the perimeter of the area, beginning to circle.

Duncan Brown

"Madison? Madison?! Shit!!!"

Duncan watched on the digital map as the Mad-e broke it's stance and instead of supplying assistance to Blur, it was on a direct route to the Volkov Gunships. Unfortunately due to the communications failure his words were unable to get through to the girl and Duncan's feedback from the Mad-e was resulting in all sort of error messages.

"Captain... We may have a problem here."

Madison Cole

The Mad-e was screaming accross the landscape towards it's intended targets just as the smoke started to clear from around the tanks. Madison sat within her cockpit, neglecting her position and intended role, instead fuelled with a sense of rage and anger.

"You know what, fuck you guys!" She yelled at the top of her lungs as she bought one hand down and started to punch in the code for her Artillery mode.

> Code accepted
===WARNING!!!!===
> NC still in motion

"Don't care! Overri..*COUGH*..de!" Madison's command was abruptly interrupted by a harsh cough and a faint taste of blood. Along with this she was feeling a warm sensation running out of her nose as the feedback from the Cerebral Resonance was starting to effect her body.
> Admin command accepted
> Artillery mode activated

Madison could see the tanks coming up quickly as the VTOL wings folded themselves up as the NC squatted down for it's attack and skidded across the surface to a stop. She was close, possibly too close, and during the skid she had manage to tear off the anchors that held her NC stable to the ground while she fired her mortars.

===WARNING!!!!===
> Target in close proximity
> Possible damage to [New User] NC: 40%
> Possible damage to Warhead Launcher Ammo supply

"Let's see you pricks dodge this one!" Grabbing a hold of the controls she pulled the trigger and felt a violent kickback as the Mad-e lurched backwards. For Madison, the whole world went dark as her body was thrown forward and her skull cracked against the front screen. Along with this, the cord that attached to her head in order to control the NC was pulled out prematurely before she had a chance to de-sync from the machine.

While Joe flew directly above the tanks in around 5 kilometers height, Mad-E's spontanious actions distracted him from keeping the detabilized Swarm under control, and thus, the Swarm prompty tilted downwards and started spinning on a vertical axis. It quickly spun too fast for any human to hope to counteract it effectively. To save himself Joe attempted to get the NC's computer to 'lock' the controls' axes, so Joe wouldn't have to factor in the rotation himself when controlling, although that mode would make turning difficult, as the controls would always point north, even if the NC wasn't, which could lead to accidental sideways-walks. In his haste he accidentally dumb-launched a full volley of missiles, which quickly spread out in a circular pattern around the battlefield due to the centrifugal force. The Swarm however fell faster than its missiles, as it was still on full thrust, powering downwards onto the enemy, in what likely looked like a kamikaze attempt.
Joe was done with the 'locking' of his controls just in time, as it turned out. He pulled up immedeatly, the NC slowly followed his orders, degree by degree. Joe didn't remember whether or not he screamed while falling.
He would reach a horizontal course at about 1 meter above the ground, which luckily was rather flat. He was at a 45° angle, as the computer had almost fully stopped the rotation, and Joe noticed that he fired a volley of the missiles as one passed him within 100 meters. It was at that moment that he noticed, he accidentally surrounded the enemy on his very own. If he was to engage the aim at the right moment, the missiles would by flying at the tanks from all directions, impossible to dodge all, impossible to shoot down more than a few, the hits were almost assured. He waited a few seconds until the right time, then activated the aim-laser pointed at the tank that looked like it was in the best shape of all of the tanks.
As the Swarm had slowed down while turning, it was turning at a much faster rate now, but Joe would still get close to the ground. Unfortunatly, his discovery had distracted him from looking at where he was flying, so unlucky as he was, he ended up on a collision course with a lonely tree. The tree obviously didn't survive the impact, it was shattered while also being ripped out of the ground. It still did much damage to the NC, for a tree that is, and as a result the Swarm was unable to take off again in its current state without repairs, so it crashed. After rolling over while sliding across the ground, the Swarm came to a halt on its back, feet pointing away from the enemy, the rocket-launcher, while loaded and able to fire, was unable to reload automatically now; the aiming-laser still functioned. Joe was lucky to have put his seat-belt on, otherwise he would be either mush or jelly by now, and his neurological impant wasn't ripped out by the force, which would have pulled on the cable, if the plug had gotten stuck in the socket, and if he would have been flung out of his seat. The crash had pushed most of Joe's blood into his legs, so he fell unconscious for a short time.
When he woke up, he looked up, where the enemy was last seen by him from his current perspective, to see if the fight was still going. He had only one volley of missiles left.

Percy had been on autopilot for the past little while, just tailing the train like he was told to. He'd be getting what would be highway hypnosis, if only there was a highway. Only when Jingo had mentioned there was a hostile on the horizon did he snap out of it.

"Shit, hang on.." Percy mumbled as he straightened himself up more in the seat, trying to ready his weapons. He couldn't do it through the connection he had with the NC, so he just used the switches with the slightly-damaged label "weapon safety", flicking them all off. There was no guard to detach, but there was a click to show that they are in fact ready to blow opponents out of the water.. Or.. the sand, technically speaking.

"NC334B-7, Bloody Champ, vacate the train's exclusion zone or I will have to remove you by force, Wessex, over."

Percy went to add to Jingo's threat, but the Champ made its motives evident before he could get his word in. Percy dodged out of the way of the stray missiles that didn't get got by the train's defenses, and before the train-conductor could tell him to get his ass in gear, he went in for the attack, firing his own missiles at the hostile NC - ba-ba-boom.

Two can play that game, god damn it.

Percy was shaking from the sudden adrenaline rush and, in his jacked up haze, he pushed the button on his dash that turned on his microphone to finally speak, "I'm way too tired to deal with this shit right now, so why don't you just go home and fuck off, huh? Live and let live.. Or whatever the saying is."

The 'Bloody Champ' continued its' maneuvers and attacks, firing another volley as the P.M.'s barrage of missiles began to maneuver themselves and try to ensure a hit. Percy groggily yelled at the 'Bloody Champ's pilot, and... got a reply! "Wow, kiss your mom with that mouth?" a young woman retorted. "Oh hey, read the forecast? Rainy day. Doesn't happen that often huh? Maybe we should enjoy it... Glory to the best pilot, though."

'Champ' closed the connection. Speaking mostly to herself, "Gee, I'll feel bad killing these guys now...". Just as Bloody-Champ implied, Jingo and Percy just noticed that... it seemed like it would actually rain in a little. That didn't happen often...Perhaps they should enjoy it. The large, dark clouds foreboding a downpour could be seen above. It really doesn't happen often these days...

The BC activated its' thrusters when it was at the 'back' of the trains' perimeter, dodging the outdated missiles, boosting in under them and making them impact behind her. As it closed in, it bobbed and weaved erratically, firing a barrage of bullets at the trains' rear. As the PM was also there, a few of the armor-piercing rounds might've collided, but he wasn't her primary target.

The Captain yelled into her ear-piece as Mad-E went berserk. "Mad-e, Mad-e.. Madison! What are you doing? Your NC isn't designed for that!". The Mad-E's barrage of mortars began to impact the remaining tanks, crippling them even more. The Vulcan-equipped one was blown to hell, a round penetrated a turret, burrowed into the chassis, and blew up, nearly breaking the tank in two and actually blowing off a turret a few meters into the sky. As the Mad-E came closer, it began to rain.

The other-one was a dead-tank crawling, and Elizabeth was notified of the Mad-E actually firing mortars while moving as she began to move in. Reflexively, she managed to dodge them. She continued her plan, and quickly got to the last remaining tank (that wasn't in pieces) and planted a demo-charge on its' front, rocketing away before it could even instinctively shoot back. The occupants were still pissing their pants, which was fortunate. Before detonation, the tank managed to fire off a few shots in futility, and Blur plus the Mad-E could register the both angry, and fearful screams of the occupants inside. "We REFUSE to go down so EASILY!-" was the most notable pre-death boast before the tank's occupant compartment was trashed by the demo-charge that really should be used against armored bunkers.

The Captain 'gave new orders', which was more like trying to salvage the situation... "B-Blur.. Mad-E, Swarm.. Re-group and...Assist team B's efforts.

She deactivated her ear-piece and looked over to Duncan. "Does.. She have anger issues? I swear to god Duncan.. This isn't good. It isn't a great idea for someone with 'issues' to be piloting a walking death-machine that could destroy a military base single handedly!"

The Captain was apparently receiving flashbacks of the worst sort. She snapped out of it, renewed. "Forget it. We'll have a talk about this when it's over.", she turned on her earpiece. "Blur, Mad-E, Swarm, regroup and assist Team B ASAP, time is money." ... "Do it!"

"Err, Captain, Swarm is unable to assist team B, as it is not in a condition allowing it to do so. For one, it cannot fly or even hover anymore, and in addition the rocket launchers cannot reload. All the Swarm would be is a single use rocketlauncher with the inability to get to the battlefield in time." Joe attempted to inform the captain. "Mad-E's pilot might also be uncinscious due to the forces exerted on her, but I'm not fully sure."

Before the captain responded, he started a self-diagnostic, to see if he could quickly fix the reload mechanism of the rocketlauncher on the field. If the captain didn't change her mind, he had to have the swarm in the best condition he could possibly get it into before arrival.

Everything happened too quickly, Eli was hardly aware as she retreated from the decimated tank. The explosions couldn't have all been from them, a few had come from beyond the cloud, and only when she was clear did it don on her what Madison had done. She felt her stomach twist itself into a knot.

"Oh my god," she whimpered, and was immediately thankful that she hadn't been broadcasting. At least, not on the main line.

"What happened?" came Vera's cautious inquiry. "Lizzy? Is everything everything okay? Is everyone--"

Eli cleared her throat, nodding her head as though the girl huddled up on the other end of the radio could see her. "Everyo--everything's fine, Vera. We got the bad guys."

"You did! Hah! I knew you would. Don't stand a chance against my big sis."

"Y--you know it Vi. I've gotta..." Eli had to hold back the urge to curse herself for the way her hands were shaking. She couldn't take her eyes off of the wreckage of the tanks, knowing that somewhere in there, the Mad-E was stalled. She listened to the Captain talk, giving them new orders, and from Vera's silence Eli knew the girl was listening as well. She wondered if Vera could pick up on the Captain's strained voice, the girl was clever, she could recognize worry fairly well.

Eli turned her attention to Swarm. Joe was still alive from what she could tell, but from what he said and just from the brief scan of his NC, she didn't have faith that he would be doing much for the remainder of the mission.

That done, she nearly headed off towards team B's location without a second thought before passing the wreckage brought the pit in her stomach back to the front of her mind.

"I gotta go for a bit, Vi," Eli said, slowing down.

"M'kay! Go kick some more ass--butt!"

As the connection cut, Blur veered off to the side back towards the wreckage, and she opened comms once again with the team/HQ. "This is Blur to NC Mad-E, requesting pilot status-report."

Eli didn't expect a response, but casting out her line was worth the shot. She wasn't sure if she was on a clock or not, but just as had happened with Bishop and Rook, Eli feared there was some sort of dead-man's bomb within the tanks as well. If Mad-E was still in there amidst the smoke, then she was still in danger.

Forget her. You have a mission to complete. I'm not leaving. You're disobeying a direct order. We can't afford to lose an NC, I'm salvaging Smith's Rest property. You're being soft. Eli ground her teeth together, clenched the controls so tightly she felt her hands might split around them.

As Blur was once again consumed by the smoke cloud, she found her targeting system, as fine-tuned as it was, had no luck in spotting anything wreckage or otherwise, she'd have to rely on her eyes. Or rather, Blur's eyes. The air was thick, too thick to make out any solid shapes, but a small distance away she saw firelight dancing, albeit faintly. Drawing closer, Eli spotted the remains of the tank, and her urgency grew. Now she too was close enough to be caught by any after-grave explosives, and even if there wasn't anything to tell her she was running out of time, there was no way to ignore the creeping danger.

Coming around, it was easy enough to make out the smaller form of the Mad-E nearby. Blur got in front of her, placed her hands upon either of Mad-E's shoulders --careful not to press too hard-- and slowly began to move out of the cloud using the boosters on her back. The process took a good minute or so, but she didn't want to risk trying to air-lift the damaged NC, in case the cockpit was loose, or something volatile fell. When at last the two would emerge out into the open air again, Blur tried not to linger too long overlooking the Mad-E's damage.

It's fine, it's what the armor is there for. I'll bet the inside is in perfect condition. Cute.

"Blur to NC Mad-E, respond if-- shit, forget it. Command, this is Blur. Madison isn't responding, I think Swarm might be right. Please advise."

Eli sat back for a moment. quiet, before radio static snapped her back again. She expected the Captain's voice, but instead, once again, it was Vera.

"Maybe you should go get her, Lizzy," the girl said, and Eli made a mental note to make sure the radio was off the next time she meant to cut the connection. Vera went on. "Y'know like get out an' see if she's actually alright in there. I mean... if you can get inside..."

Get inside? Eli didn't even know where to start with that. Then again if Madison really was hurt, staying inside a damaged NC likely wasn't doing her any favors. "Thanks Vi," she said. The idea was fairly outlandish, but if push came to shove, and Madison needed medical attention, getting just her back would be far faster than transporting the Mad-E as a whole. Eli decided to wait for further orders, and then act from there.

Cap'n responded to everything over the comms, "G-good points, good points. Swarm, Blur, check the inside. There should be an emergency compartment right below your seats, crowbar is inside. Use it if you have to, break the damn door if you must. Oh, Joe, there's technically a parachute too." Well, it seems like the Captain was going back to her mildly snarky ways, perhaps it's better then it looks on the squad's end? "After that, secure the Mad-E and try to get its' pilot, and the unit itself, back to base. I don't care if you have to drag it back by its' feet, just figure something out. Now, I have to help team B, do as ordered. Out."

She then switched over to team B, and began giving out orders and info. "Team B, Team A was originally going to come and try to assist, but, well... unforeseen incident. In any case, We're recieving info on the 'Bloody Champ', she's part of a duo, second unit is likely coming in any minute now. B.C. itself is a dedicated anti-armor unit, mounts Denver-Vegas short range mortars internally. If possible, go for a soft-kill, take out the cockpit. Very good scrap. Secondary unit is... well we aren't getting too much info. Apparently a sneaky bastard. In any case, prioritize the defense of the train. Out."

She deactivated her earpiece again and sighed, holding the bridge of her nose. "This shit is so surreal... Did any of you idiots spike my drink?"

Madison Cole

Two adults were standing by a little girl as she stood up on the dining chair to look at the delicious birthday cake that had been made specially for her. She could hear them happily sing happy birthday as she eagerly blew out the candles that were standing right in the very center, making the compulsory wish that every child made on their special day.

"Horray Madison!" the mother called out as she leaned over and hugged her daughter, giving Madison a tight squeeze that made the girl giggle, "Honey, do you want to go get her birthday present?"

"Sure, I'll be right back," the husband spoke as he went to go to another room of the house, but a loud knock at the front door quickly changed the mood of the happy celebrations. He walked over and opened the door asking who was there, but instead of facing a friendly neighbour that was probably coming over to give Madison a well earned congratulations, he was greeted by a large fist and an excruciating pain in the gut.

Madison's mother froze in horror as she saw her husband drop to the ground and these large, burly men walk over him, entering the household without anyone's permission. "We received information that this village is harbouring NC equipment," One of the men started as he addressed the household, "We are hear to address these claims and deal punishment for those that are harbouring such technology without company approval."

"We don't know anything about NC technology..." groaned the father on the ground, just as one of the brutes turned around and placed his boot on the man's chest.

"See, we know that's a lie due to our sources, and if you're not going to talk, we'll make you..." Straight away he lifted his hand to the gun holstered on the side of his pants, flicking the safety off and lifting it up to aim it at Madison's mother, and pulled the trigger.

"Mommy?" Madison spoke out as she watched her mother fall to the floor in a limp heap, red flying everywhere over the dining room. She turned to her father and saw the argument escalate to the point where they were punching the man and making threats about harming his own daughter. It reached a critical point where another gun was pulled and a second shot was fired, leaving Madison an orphan for the first time in her life.

The first man that entered the home walked over to the young child who was still standing on the chair and leaned over to talk to her, "Now I don't like killing children, so think yourself lucky lil girl, however take note of this... Your parents are dead because they wanted to remain quiet about how they did a very, very naughty thing."

"If you're quiet, you're dead? I don't want to be quiet." The tears started welling up in the poor girls eyes as the man grinned a sinister grin before getting up and commanding his troops out, explaining that they didn't have time to play babysitter for the girl and leaving Madison alone in a house that used to be called her home. As soon as he left Madison climbed down off the chair and walked over to her mother's side, grabbing the right hand and shaking it as best as she could, "Mommy? Mommy? Don't be quiet." The tears started to fill her eyes as she started to stamp her feet, "Mommy! Don't be quiet, be noisy like me! Be noisy like me."

...

"...be noisy like me," Madison's eyes slowly opened as she was greeted by a darkened room that held little more than a bunch of levers and glowing lights. The jerking and movement of the NC from Blur had been enough to wake her up from the nightmare she was experiencing. She felt that her body was somewhat limp and laid all over the control panel of her NC. Using as much strength as she could, she placed her hands on the surface and slid her body back into the chair.

Giving a little sniff she felt her eyes fill with tears as the memories of her childhood started to flood back in for some unknown reason, memories that she hadn't experienced in almost 2 decades. Lifting her hand she wiped underneath her nose, but all she was doing was wiping the dripping blood across her face and onto the back of her hand. Madison then proceeded to pull her legs up to her chest and curl up into a ball, knowing that this time she really did make a mess of things.

Dropping her head into her knees she started speaking to herself, "I don't know why I even like NCs when mum and dad were killed because of them. I'm not even a good pilot. I can't even sync properly. And I make stupid mistakes like this." She held her arms around her knees and pushed her face even further into her legs. "I just don't want to be alone again. I don't want to die here. I don't want to be quiet."

As she cried alone in her NC muttering little phrases, the sound of scraping metal could be heard on the edge of the emergency exit hatch of the Mad-e.

The Swarm's electronic systems were still functioning, as they were embedded within the torso, which didn't take much damag during the crash, as the jetpack shielded it from the ground, which did the most damage. The jetpack was probably either completely ground up by the friction during the crash, or it was crushed by the impact. Possibly something in between. The legs and arms were also damaged, soil got into the joints, and armor was deformed, limiting the joints' mobility. In it's current state, the Swarm had the mobility of an elder person suffering from gout.

Despite this, Joe managed to get the Swarm in an upright position, and started walking towards Blur and Mad-E. Despite the reduced flexibility of the Swarm's joints, slowly walking in the NC was still a littlebit faster than running on foot. He opened a direct line to Blur: "Did you get any response from Mad-E yet? If not, I'll attempt to force a video feed from within the cockpit, unless I arrive first." Joe muted himself on the line afterwards, he didn't want to distract anyone with his attempts of getting a response.

His first test was to check if Mad-E's communication systems were still functioning, so he sent a PING to the NC. Any device interfacing with a network should respond to a PING with a PONG, provided it is able to do so, and the origin of the PING isn't on the device's blacklist. Mad-E'S computer immedeatly replied with the automated response. Joe sighed, relieved that the communication equipment survived, so he wouldn't be forced to be in the dark about the pilot's state until the hatch was broken open.

The next step would be to get a response from the pilot, and not the computer. Joe decided, that the best way to do so, was to pretend to be an unknown entity attempting to open a channel to the Mad-E. The computer should then prompt the pilot as for what to do. Even if the pilot wasn't plugged in, there should at least be a notification on a display or through a speaker, provided any display or speaker had survived.

As he sent the request, he had walked a 3rd of the way. Without the impaired joints, Joe would've arrived before he would have been able to start the 2nd test.

Near the bombed-out husks of glorified land battleships, the two remaining functional NC's, and their pilots, couldn't help but feel something. Even the Swarm was giving off a vibe...

They weren't alone.

Elizabeth could feel something, sitting inside the cockpit. That feeling she'll get accustomed to as time goes on, that.. unexplainable sixth sense. Joe, while to a lesser extent, could 'sense' something too.

Again.. they weren't alone.

Their fears were confirmed. The Captain frantically notified them. "Holy... Swarm! Blur! Dodge!"
As Swarm's joints were partially blocked, the best Joe could think of was to promptly fall onto the ground, face first.

In hindsight, that was a terrible idea. Underneath the sand, a burrowing.. thing revealed itself, and before Joe could even react he saw right in front of him two massive heat-blades cut off his NC's head from below the dunes, then retreat back underground.

Eli very nearly shouted again, going rigid when the captain's order blared through the NC's comm lines and into her head. Still ,her reaction was quick nonetheless, and she darted to the side, away from the Mad-E and hopefull whatever threat had spooked command.

"Great, now I'm blind and deaf." Joe commented on the dire situation, as if it all was just a game.

A voice, filled with... nostalgia, yet an unfamiliarity came on the comms, a radar blip blinking in and out of existence right underneath them while the new contact at least introduced himself.
"Hmm, may the best pilot win.", and the Captain warned again. "Get off the damn ground immediately! We'll use your sensors to scan remotely, focus on dodging! Joe, back-up sensors should come online... now."

Their predator decided that the heartier prey wasn't worth it at this time, before going for the more enjoyable hunt and kill.

As the backup sensors were finished initializing and calibrating, Joe used them to try to stand up again. The rather immobile joints made it all the more difficult, but after a minute of continually shifting weight, balance and slow progress, he made it.

As the Swarm was getting back up, Blur presumably scanned the area around itself in panic. Little did the pilot know that she should've been looking down. A heat-based talon stabbed into her NC's left leg from behind, right into a leg-mounted thruster, and tried to rip the leg off.

Eli watched in muted horror as the Swarm was decapitated, and it took a moment for memory to kick in that the cockpit wasn't in the head. As Joe got the Swarm back onto its feet, her hesitation cost her dearly, and she felt a sudden numbness in the back of her leg, followed by an involuntary drop to a kneel.

She grabbed her blade from its hold on her back, ignited it and tried to swing blindly at the ground behind her.

"Kneel before-" was all their assailant got to say before the tip of its' talon was cut off. "Playtime's over!" he chuckled in retaliation. Their new enemy revealed itself in full, mainly by thrusting out of the damn ground and pointing its' two scythe-like arms at the Blur's shoulders, bringing it along for a ride into the lower atmosphere before turning off its' blades and throwing her down into the ground.

Who the hell is this guy?

Joe meanwhile tried to run away, but the blocked joints turned the attempt into a slow walk. He had no functioning weapons whatsoever, so the only option was to run. While he ran, he unintentionally didn't limit the joints to their new physical limit, putting immense stress on the joints and what was blocking them. In time, the soil that got inside was squeezed out, and the malformed armor malformed even more to not get in the way of the joints' movements. The joints themselves were ruined as well though, and while they regained their flexibility, lost their speed.

Get off the ground, now it made sense, dammit. Blur was in the air before she knew it, and before she had the opportunity to try and open comms with the assailant, she was plummeting back to earth. The impact sent a wave of equally unsettling numbness along her spine, and it almost felt as though the actual wind had been knocked from her lungs.

Snapping back her composure, Eli rolled Blur onto its stomach before leaping back to its feet. She ignited the other blade, mounted on her left wrist, and glared up at the other NC.

"This is NC Blur of Smith's Rest, identify yourself," she barked into the comms. It became fairly evident at this point her only option was to hope the Swarm either got away or found some method of getting itself back into the fight.

On a seperate line back to command: "Captain, requesting any information on the airborne tunneling NC."

"Scans suggest it's suited for extremely quick maneuvers, and lightning fast CQC combat. Even at mid-range you're just gonna have to react quicker then him, shoot his arms off as a priority!"

Their enemy scoffed, "Gee, she sounds familiar. Your encryption is terrible. Is that Sophie?"

"WHO THE HELL IS THIS?!"

While running away, Joe recalled, that there was an unaimed firing mode for the missiles. He only had one single volley left and was unable to reload, so he had to make it count. He stopped, turned around, and ran back. He wanted to be at point-blank range while firing the missiles, to ensure hits. Joe attempted to use the ancient RSA encryption method to establish an almost 100% secure low-bandwidth connection to Blur.

RSA is a 2-key encryption method, one key is public, and can only be used to encrypt messages, while the 2nd key is private, and not to be shared with ANYONE, even those you are communicating with, and it can only be used to decrypt messages. This way of encrypting was 100% safe, so long as you yourself are not hacked, but it was slow, and thus unable to be used for voice or even video transmission.
"Distract him, I'll try to get close for my last attack this fight." The text message appeared on Eli's HUD. Joe then used the same encryption to send "This is my last attack, I could only try to fistfight without fists after this, so I'll retreat."

Eli's focus flicked to the message Joe had sent her, and hoped that it was either hidden or that the other NC wasn't paying attention.

Blur's engines revved to life once again, minus one on her leg, and she ascended to level with the enemy. One engine wouldn't do too much to her flight capabilities, but she would have to avoid many more similar incidents if she wanted to remain airborne for long.

"This is NC Blur Smith's Rest," she said, trying once again to contact the other NC. "Identify yourself, and leave the area, or we will use lethal force to remove you. Smooth, Eli, that'd convince him.

Meanwhile, Joe attempted to use the wreckages of the former tanks to stay out of the enemy's sight, to get as close as possible unnoticed.

Both still in the air, the enemy was seemingly at a slight disadvantage. He boosted towards the Blur and went for another 'slam attack' or whatever the hell he did before, having the talons swipe downwards from above the Blur at close range, trying to grab on and then boost downwards, preferably cracking the cockpit. That would've been horrible.

He would've done it too, but instincts are a funny thing.

Blur lowered as the swipes came down, avoiding the same fate as before, if only narrowly. Then again, that was the idea, it was all about spacing. There was little room between them when she dodged, so now it was time to see just what kind of hardware she was up against.

She shot back up at the enemy, readying a counter attack, and both blades lashed out at him in a cross-movement. Fast, but then, clearly the guy was fast as well. Indeed, he noted her movements before impact, and it was a decent shot. Or, attack, really. He boosted backwards just in time to not get cut into four chunks, but his frontal armor was stung by the strike in any case, the residual heat from her plasma-blades making an X-formation on the other NC's chest.

The other NC did a 'sommersault' afterwards, halfway-through boosting downwards quickly to land relatively gently on the ground with a counter-thrust right above the sand. "You're pretty good - just what I'd expect with the same training as Sophie, as I presume."

Joe stepped into plain sight from behind the former tanks. "Surprise, motherfucker!" were his words as he launched the barrage of missiles. He sent the words through an unencrypted voice-broadcast.

About time... Joe could just feel the surprise of the other guy as he saw the heavy NC he thought he disabled come from behind some destroyed tanks and fire a barrage of missiles.
"Fuck." He sent through the comms, a whisper of defeat. The missiles impacted seconds later as the pilot of the enemy NC resigned himself to his fate, the first few explosions knocking it on its ass and the rest blowing up its upper-most body parts.

"Fuck!" Eli's attention turned to Swarm, and for a moment she thought she might scream at him. Instead she looked back to the wreckage of the NC, descending and approaching as quickly as possible. "Don't explode, don't explode, don't explode."

"Any demolition charges should have been set off by the missiles," Joe replied, he sounded a little proud.

Blur crouched by it, trying to get as close as possible. "Command, look for any allegiant markings, who was this NC working with?" she asked, before turning her comm's focus at the reamins of the NC. "Hey, guy, you alive? If you're alive, do...something. Fuck."

"This NC seems to have been working with team B's current enemy, which... you should probably help out with. Detailed scans are showing the cockpit is severely roughed up but technically still in one piece, he's probably fine."

That was probably a lie, but he did shoot first.

"Blur, you go help team B, I can't fight right now anyways, so I'll take Mad-E back to the base on foot. If you finish before I'm there, pick us up." Joe suggested. He then proceeded to attempt to push Mad-E, as Swarm had no hands to begin with.

The Mad-E? Eli had nearly forgotten about their damaged teammate during the struggle, and now that it was over she didn't feel the same urgency as she had before.

"If Madison is dead, she's dead. We have a potential living source of intelligence here," she said, rising and starting off towards the location of team B. "Make sure the pilot is dead, then return to base."

"If the pilot is still alive, it is likely he doesn't want to get captured. I can't move to the base fast, so the pilot would likely either escape or commit suicide on the way. You are the fastest one here right now, so if you care about the intelligence more than team B, you should see to it. Unless the captain delcares otherwise." Joe not only transmitted this to Blur, but also the base, to get the captain's judgement.

"Elizabeth, Joe's right. It's just one NC, team B can handle themselves. Help Joe get the Mad-E back to base, ASAP."

"...Come talk to me when the mission is over."

"Ouch." Joe silently commented. He made sure the base couldn't hear it though.

Blur came to a halt, and Eli couldn't help the snarl that curled her lips. "Yes ma'a-" "Don't call me ma'am."

Eli went quiet, unsure of how to respond an affirmative other than "affirmative", which the captain likely understood anyway. So instead she merely returned to the Mad-E and Swarm. She hooked her arm's around the former's hull as her engines revved to life.

"Start heading back, I'll come get you once I've dropped off the Mad-E, Eli muttered over the comms to Joe. A few moments later and Blur was airborne, Mad-E in tow, and heading back to base.

"I'll be on my way on-foot to shorten the 2nd flight". Joe replied, and walked basewards.

Percy was wary of the rain - not specifically because of the the rain itself, or even how rare it was, but for the possibility it being acid rain. It'd really fuck with the NCs if that was the case. It could just be his paranoia, but he keeps it in mind nonetheless.. Especially since the fucker mentioned it. Even if it's not acid rain, he has to be act fast, be precise, and not. fuck. up.

He did his damnedest to make sure the train was safe, firing more burst-missiles at the Champ. Whatever was being broadcast on his comms, he just shut it off. He needs to focus.

His missiles didn't hit the Champ a majority of the time - partly because of his shaking and racing thoughts, but mostly because the fucker wouldn't just stay still.

As the Champ got ever-closer, he switched from missiles to his rifle so shrapnel didn't affect Jingo, the train, or himself. This mission isn't going bad if he can help it.

The pilot of the B.C. stopped her barage, meekly mumbled things over the comms as she dodged the last of Percy's missiles and began (fumblingly) dodging his rifle fire. It was seemingly a series of denials, and perhaps fear.

She stopped completely, giving Percy a few free shots at her NC before she snapped out of it and continued. The armored trains' plasma-based defenses charged for another barrage and did a relatively slow 90 degree turn, allowing all three of its' right turrets to fire at the assailant.

The B.C. dodged two of the shots, the third impacting. "F-f... Forget it! Forget it! This is going worse than planned! F... fuck you guys!" said a quivering young womans' voice.

"Fuck you too, good riddance!" Percy shot back. If he wasn't irritable, he might have noticed she sounded genuinely afraid and would have definitely laid off the insults.

"Eat shit!" she said futilely while gaining distance. She charged her thrusters to full power after a bit and left the combat zone.

...That was easy.

Percy grinned. He must've scared the pilot off, meaning nobody on either side died (that he knew of, at least). This mission is going smoothly.. Almost too smoothly. He chalks up the sudden unease to him just thinking too hard about this.

Thankfully, the 'Escort Train' mission was more or less uneventful for the next few hours, as the trains' guards rotated, a fully company-owned NC duo replacing Jingo and Percy. Blur returned to base and dropped off the Mad-E, before doing the same with the Swarm a while later. The engineers were successful in prying open the emergency hatch, and Madison was instantly put into the medical ward for a complete physical exam and rest.

Blur, also, found that while picking up the Swarm, the unknown NC was nowhere to be found, and due to the Swarm's damaged sensors, Verona had no idea what happened to it either. It seems like he indeed was fine, and he somehow got his NC functioning just enough to sneak out while Verona wasn't looking.

As the team got settled back in, they were quickly debriefed, and dismissed. They also found an additional 15,000 in each of their accounts.

Eli might have screamed when she saw that the enemy NC was gone. It would have been bad enough wasting a potentially useful source of information, especially considering the enemy clearly knew about them, but now they had escaped. It was almost enough to make her forget why they'd come out in the first place. At the very least their main objective had been completed.

She spent the entire flight back to base in silence, a mixture of her displeasure with Joe, and the minuscule anxiety forming in the back of her mind. The Captain did not scare her, nobody scared her, but all signs pointed to trouble and Eli could not for the life of her figure out what she'd done wrong. The mission came first, Smith's Rest came first, that was the whole reason they were out there, surely the Captain understood. Surely.

During the debriefing, she dutifully gave her recollection when her turn came, and refrained from mentioning any personal decisions or minor altercations that occurred on the field. A small part of her was relieved, even thankful, that she had not been called out while everyone was present. A mercy she was not used to, since she'd always been taught that public humiliation was an effect form of discipline.

Eli waited until the others had filtered out, and it was merely the Captain and herself that remained within in the debriefing room. When the door shut, she snapped to attention and raised a salute to the Captain, face blank, though the scarf pulled up over half of it helped.

"You requested to speak with me, Captain," she said more than asked, likely an unnecessary reminder, but one that was issued all the same.

After the debriefing, Joe ate his dinner ration for the day, the struggle had made him hungry. The hall he expected to be the canteen was almost empty at that hour, so he was done eating within 5 to 10 minutes, as nothing distracted him from eating.

Having nothing to do, he went to his room and browsed the shop, the technical issues he was having had been resolved in the meantime, so he looked through the weapons category.
He was looking for a backup weapon, in case he couldn't use his missiles due to either damage or too thick fog around the enemy. As this included him not planning to use it too often, he was looking for a cheap weapon. The cheapest listed weapon were missiles for a mere 8K ICC, but those weren't really an option, he already had sufficient missiles. The 2nd cheapest one was the VEKW-01.65 railgun for 12K ICC. It fulfilled all of his criteria for his backup weapon, and when you don't frequently use a weapon, its power consumption usually does not concern you, provided your system can store enough power for 1 shot.

Joe decided to ask an engineer whether or not Swarm's power generators and capacitors could field the railgun's requirements. The engineer he asked thought a bit, and then responded with an assuring 'yes', so Joe went back to the console and purchased it.
In the occasion, that damage dealt by the enemy prevented Joe from using his missiles, a mere NC-grade rifle likely didn't have enough 'umpf' to do much about the situation.

Sophia, "The Captain", waited for Elizabeth to finish and to make sure no one was listening in. Convinced no one was eavesdropping, she began. "Elizabeth Jackspar... I know you've been trained to be brutally efficient, and you are very good at your job for someone so young and 'green', but what you said out there was concerning.". She got up and walked around the room a little, her blue eyes inquistively looking towards Elizabeth.

Under other circumstances Eli might have been proud to hear the Captain's words. Then again, she wasn't here to be praised, and the Captain's focus had clearly been on the last bits. Still, for a moment she wondered what sort of informtation her superior had access to. 'Trained to be brutally efficient'? Had that been in her dossier? Her mother must have said something, which was disconcerting in of itself. She never liked it when the woman showed her off in paperwork.

"Ma'a--" she started, stuttering as though some file had been misplaced before picking up again. "Captain? What did you find concerning?"

"I'm concerned you don't realize that I would much rather have a botched operation and our growing reputation ruined, then one of you Pluggers being killed on my watch. While I can... understand your purely logical reasoning, we aren't a Ruling Company; we can't just replace our losses like that.

I'm not going to punish you in any meaningful way for this, but I just wanted to set the record straight. From now on, your fellow pilots come first, and the mission comes second." Sophia waited for a moment, losing her 'purely logical and tough' disposition for the first time to Elizabeth (if only for a second); "There really is no punishment involved... It's just that you and your fellows aren't tools, after all."

"That's all. Do you have any questions yourself?"

Eli looked at the Captain as if she hadn't finished her sentence. That wasn't it, that couldn't be that. Pilots before the mission? She didn't merely fail to understand, she found the mindset almost counterintuitive. Not of course that she would ever voice a thing like that to someone like the Captain.

"Understood," she said nonetheless. It was an order she could follow. Still at attention, she recollected one point of interest, and though at first she was hesitant to ask, there was an edge of something nearing the point of spite that drove her onward.

"What were you, before this? How does an enemy know you?"

The Captain instantly snapped back to 'Tough and focused' at her question. "A past life I wish to forget. I worked very hard to detach myself from that, and it's simply irritating when you see someone slipped away.". She thought to herself, 'Oh, like she's going to be satisfied with that.'

Eli's brow lowered, was that a riddle? A hazy answer didn't do much to assuage what slight doubt that begun to bubble in her core. She decided to prod further, under the --more true than not, really-- guise of confusion.

"I'm afraid I don't understand, Captain."

Sophia actually scoffed- "Of course you don't. You were always on the path you're on, weren't you? As long as you can remember?", she then sighed, mainly at herself, and actually gave an answer. "It's obvious you were specifically trained to pilot NC's from birth, or close to it. Well, what I did, I wasn't, and it hurt me a lot in the long run, and the few people I loved. Does that satisfy you?"

It was certainly a clearer answer, even if it left a sizable gray area. Eli offered a nod, dropping her arms to her side. "Yes Captain.

With that, she started for the exit. However it was only as she reached the door did another thought blossom. What felt like a good few minutes was strained from the seconds that followed as she tried to work out a way to phrase her question. Can? No. Why? No. If? No.

At length she turned, offering one last respectful nod. Then: "Should we trust you?". Sophie choked and couldn't answer for a while, snapping. "Don't ask questions I can't answer."

Eli stiffened, but her rigid posture hid it well. Her eyes, while passive and her expression, while blank, contained behind them now a new layer of wariness. She looked at the Captain, and scanned her for Sophie, then, realizing there was nothing she could see, turned again to leave.

"Thank you for the clarification, Captain."

Sophia didn't respond, and allowed Eli to leave in silence. For the rest of the day, as far as anyone knew it seemed like she stayed in there.
