SALSA VERDE

▅▅▅▅austin | ♏︎ | he/him | 28 | vegan

Hi, I’m Salsa Verde, arguably the best salsa and formally known as the writer, Syn. I’m a Wildlife Biologist traveling the country looking to work with the coolest: herps, mammals, birds, and invertebrates I can get my hands on. I also like plants, trees, and fungi specifically. I’ve been writing for about 13 years now and recently decided to get back into it. I enjoy anything from casual to high roleplay, 1x1, and arena. My main genres tend to be anime, SOL, and superhero but I’m really down to participate in anything. And yeah I like all that weeb shit.

The pale skinned kunoichi took it upon herself to investigate the surrounding area, it seemed no one really had asserted real authority or leadership over the group. With no clear leader the group kind of just buggered off and did their own thing. Shizuka’s precautions and reconnaissance were wasted on the group as Erika just rampaged forward like a bull in a china shop. This was quite the abhorrent behavior for one who seemed so reserved and delicate, almost like a flower. Who knows, perhaps it was the book she carried that gave her this kind of charisma and sense of security. Whatever as the case, Shizuka followed promptly behind her as she began her own investigation. “I don’t really like the dark, I can’t see anything when it’s dark out. So let’s shine some light on them kay?” Shizuka said with eyes smiling for him.

The dilapidated building was nothing more than a childish guise, what was housed inside was far more interesting. It seemed the group was caught in a fork in the road, not literally, but nevertheless they had to split. In any scenario splitting up was a sure fire way of being killed and picked off easier than staying in one large group, but this seemed to have called for special variables. After some quick deliberation by the insect man AKA Bug-Man, Shizuka’s super hero moniker he donned onto the fellow shinobi, the groups split. Shizuka wasn’t bothered who he was paired with as long as they didn’t really get in his way. With bible thumping Erika now in his party, the two wandered off to find this mystical laboratory. A sudden stream of relief poured itself into Shizuka’s lungs. The familiar feeling of a clean and sanitized space filled the boy with glee and effervescence. The boy collapsed the air filtration mask he had on and took one deep inhalation of clean air.

With a new outlook on life Shizuka quickly went to work, his eyes moved like buttons being pushed on a typewriter. The ruby eyed ninja couldn’t make tails end of the writing on the documents he found or on anything with writing actually. Having ruled out the ability to read any of the foreign writing, Shizuka stuck to visual evidence to help guide their path. Examining the rest of the room, his eyes were glued to the only thing keen enough to warrant any attention, hazard tape. Air walking over tables and equipment the young boy touched down in the face of the black and yellow tape. Without much thought he cut through the tape with a finger cloaked in highly pressurized wind chakra. Flicking the wind off his finger allowed the doors to part just enough for him to squeeze through.

What Shizuka found on the other side was quite interesting to say the least. “Hey Erika come over here and check this out. You might want to consult your book on answers for this” Religion always seemed like wasted energy to Shizuka, he much rather believed in that the earth had a soul and had distinct spiritual essences. Regardless that was neither here nor there, while he signaled for the pale girl to run over, the boy tried with all his might to open the reinforced access doors but to no avail. Instead, he did manage to make out seals placed on each of the chambers within. Shizuka was never too good with seals so he left that to Erika as he continued to look around. Unsheathing his sword, with the tail end of his handle he broke through the green box taking the pills while clearing the rest of the glass. “There’s some instructions on here I can’t read, here keep it as a bookmark” Tossing it over his shoulder he guided the piece of paper with air, creating a pathway to meet directly up with Erika.

“I’m not much for linguistics or deciphering unknown language, but I can tell what illustrations mean and I don’t think these are too friendly” each adjacent chamber had a picture of multiple animals. It was similar to a zoo or an aquarium where they keep the image and description of the species on the walls outside of the glass. The only difference was these were no normal animals, quite possibly genetically spliced or an amalgamation formed from some use of Kinjutsu, whatever was the case, Shizuka was glad he hadn’t opened the chamber doors. “Well now what? There’s nothing really more we can do in here, not until we figure out what those instructions mean. And I ain’t ready to go to Old McDonald’s farm just yet” The wind child joked.

Tension was in the air, the gale wind has unsettled and irritated its surroundings much like any strong wind. Eita was the first to appear disturbed and with a deep glower to his persona as Shizuka made his dazzling entrance. The tumble weed of a man or bug or whatever the heck he was reached out to Shizuka’s hand as if he was a parent reprimanding a small child as not to touch. Shizuka obviously went blank as his expression shifted in confusion, "hmm why is this strange man touching me?” Quite the irony since Shizuka was giving anxiety to the bugs inside of the coat the strange man wore. Shizuka listened to the man speak, he was clearly articulate in his speech patterns and what he had to say was interesting, but the more he spoke the more Shizuka was less inclined to listen. All he heard was mammoth beetle before Eita’s voice transformed into static. “Oro?” Shizuka hearing his name being called, “Yes! Yes! That’s me! I don’t have any gifts either, but my air can be helpful. Just you wait and see” The young boy opening his palm and creating a small cyclone in his hand.

“Hmm?” another voice called out his name, this voice was much softer and filled with warmth, the type only a mother or maternal figure could nurture. The cyclone subsided as his deep ruby red eyes caught the reflection of the light allowing them to burn bright in the face of the pale Yamanaka. “Radiant huh? I’ll take that as a good thing. You look like the other Yamanaka’s from home, why aren’t you in Konoha? Did you get lost? I get lost sometimes, but I just follow wherever the wind takes me” her words were wasted on Shizuka, although he was apt enough to understand them, he wasn’t one for being a walking thesaurus. “You talk funny” Shizuka said bluntly, noting the sudden change in ambience within the blue eyed kunoichi, before he could question the sudden shift, the final member of their squad to be had arrived, Tapo Hanabiro. Another familiar face, one that was still a resident of Konoha, Shizuka had remember his face if nothing else. “Hey Tapo! It’s me Shizuka. Good to see you again, I didn’t know the Hokage sent both of us here. This should be a cinch.”

With their introductions out of the way, it was time for them to start their mission. While the normal shinobi would become worried or pumped with adrenaline, Shizuka was ultimately carefree. Any opportunity for new experiences were a gift to Shizuka, even if those opportunities came with peril and high risk low reward. A soldier who was fearless in the face of death and relaxed was the perfect soldier indeed. Smile on the battlefield. Shizuka raced on board first as he wanted to start things off right, unfortunately they were notified their fifth member was unable to make the voyage with the rest of them. Pouting in disappointment Shizuka only fell sadness for a hot minute before he was back to his chipper attitude. Once on the aircraft, Shizuka couldn’t help but fidget with all the tools they had supplied for the trip. He flickered the flashlights on and off, pretending that he would tell a ghost story as he wiggled his hands in an eerie manner towards the eccentric bug man.

Once they veered off to their own direction Shizuka plastered his face against the window. Dead trees and one or two small hills came into view, before they were obscured by a massive dome coming into view. The dome wasn’t able to be seen through, blocked by accumulation of a dense fog, one could only image had been eroding the clarity over the years. Touchdown. The VTOL was a matter of meters away from what looked to be an ordinary building that acted as the gateway into the dome. Shizuka tasted the stale air and sighed, why was there never any fun air wherever he went? The air was always gross when it came to missions and this one was no different. “Sooo uhhhh, I can go first and take point. Once we get inside the dome I can use my wind to blow away the dense fog or at least keep it at bay so we can see. I may not be able to see as well as you guys, but if there’s air then I can feel everything within it. What do y’all think?” Shizuka’s demeanor shifted to one that was more serious, a reprieve none of his teammates would expect. The young shinobi fingered the air as his index finger traced a miniscule circle rapidly. A small stream of air would slide through the keyhole and sketch the inside layout for Shizuka. “I don’t feel anything” whether that meant it was safe or a trap was still unbeknownst to the group.

Death, death was something that encompassed all. While there was no escape from it there were a myriad of ways to abstain from its cold indomitable grasp. The sound of scissors echoed and bounced off the walls in an environment that was obscured by darkness. Snip….snip…snip the sound intensified as a breath of life could be seen, the image of a light source flickering like the lives of many shinobi. An idea he was all too familiar with. He? With the illumination from the bleeding wick of a candle an amalgamation began to come into view. The rough shape turned into a smooth outline, a giant? No, there needed to be more focus. Edges became clear and it was now clear it was solely one man with his back to the darkness and the sound of scissors cutting from in front of him, blocked by his body. What was he cutting? Who was the mysterious stranger? Of course there were rumors, legends, old wives tales told of him or what might have happened to him.

If you couldn’t have guessed by now I couldn’t blame you. Time never lent itself to anyone, it had no bias no remorse, time was always constant; stopping for no man. It had been kind to Kinsei, Nori however. His mustache had long faded, there was nothing but clear real estate above his upper lip. The brown hue in his dirty blonde hair seemingly rescinded itself into inexistence, leaving only blonde. His hair grew to lengths of that equal to any female to date. Skin became soft and delicate with no blemishes aside from aberrant markings that stained his eyes and ran down the bridge of his nose. ”Touched by the Gods” he liked to say, but with what context? Whomever was lucky or cursed enough to enter the whereabouts of Nori Kinsei would soon find out. Anyways the rumors were all true, he had been everywhere and nowhere. This man was tact and perceptive enough to have gone radio silent all these decades, the purposeful appearance in the main villages and being seen was by no means a mistake, but perhaps…an invitation?

Regardless, his sudden appearance and orchestrated terrorist attacks did garner the attention of the world who had all but forgotten about him. It was only a matter of time before they would send another phalanx into the New Continent, destined to fail. That’s what a good solider does, does it not? Smile in the face of death and adversity with no question?

The VTOL had made all final necessary precautions preliminary to setting off into the New Continent, this was time for the aspiring nomads of the New Continent to gather their thoughts and chisel their fortitude. The VTOL went straight, then immediately veered off to what seemed to be the edge of the continent. Guess the world really wasn’t flat. While the other VTOL’s had hit nature biomes of significant value, your outcome was different, disappointing. Almost forthwith did the atmosphere begin to churn and bellow out a large rainstorm. The sky turned black as if your sudden appearance set off a sort of alarm. Water rained down heavily on the VTOL, the sounds of water splattering off the cold hard metal as the air became very dense and chilled. Out the windows was barren land with patches of green every so often. Geographically devoid of any vegetation or tree lines, no mountains ranges, no natural borders, just flat land. Although, there was one sole house on the prairie with what looked to be an abandoned city in the background, leading to a broken bridge.

Snip…snip.. Nori had been engrossed in cutting at whatever was in front of him until he felt the change in pressure outside, this distraction led him to cut his finger open. A single drop of blood fell before splattering on what sounded like a flat surface. Pairs of glowing circles began to crop up in the darkness. First there was one, then three, and now ten different pairs of glowing circles. One pair moved into the light of the candle revealing a child no more than the age of five years old, tugging at Nori’s ceremonial robes. ”Daddy, I think someone’s here.” the voice had extra bass added into it as it multiple voices were intertwined within the one, distorted one could say. Only this child would have hollowed out eyes and pale skin, whatever produced such light from the eyes was unknown, but the children were dressed in tattered clothes from early century fashion. “I know child, let’s go get ready for our guests. Nori smiled as his elongated purple nails kissed the side of the child blank face. Quickly striding into the distance, what was in front of him could finally be seen. A singular flower stained red on its petals from Nori’s blood with what could only be interpreted as an embryo at the top.

Bang! a cacophonous sound hummed inside the VTOL’s carriage, while the lights inside flashed red. The wing on the starboard side of the aircraft had exploded and was pouring smoke, turbulence was immediately felt as it threw those who were standing inside around like ragdolls. Alarms buzzing in the ears of the passengers would trigger their fight or flight responses as the aircraft descended into a death spin hurling down to the new continent at quite high speeds, there was no regaining control of the aircraft by the pilot nor cushioning the blow. The event had begun.

Walking into the foreign lands of Amegakure was unsettling in the least. It wasn’t from the towering buildings and maze of pipes nor was it from the drastic distinction in population than Konoha. No, it was mostly just the air that really off put our young hero. The stench burned the hair follicles in his nostrils, Shizuka’s eyes couldn’t help but water as he choked on his own gag. Being the guardian for all matters concerning air, Shizuka was too sensitive to the air around him in any plane. Suffocating, the boy couldn’t bear inhale any more smog with insidious intentions for his lungs. The only detriment that was more precarious than his was the surrounding area. People seemed completely unaffected by the pollution ransacking their bodies. Madness, he thought, pure madness. Regardless, he could not stand to thrive in these conditions and so with a quick flick of the wrist a pale blue breathing apparatus affixed itself to the boy’s mouth and nose connecting at the back like a gas mask.

Now in his element, Shizuka lifted his arms into the air and spun them flawlessly as if he worked in a circus as an acrobat all his life. With one small hop a gust of wind coalesced into his hand as they led down to the space where his feet once were. A small air ball formed under him as he sped off into the direction of the amphitheater the Hokage had instructed him to go to. Being one of the chosen few to become an ambassador for Konoha was an honor. An honor that was lost on the cloudy headed fool, fun was the only opportunity Shizuka saw in the matter. Happy to stretch his feet outside of his hotel, Shizuka was curious to see if he recognized any other shinobi from the chunin exams. Making his way inside the air vanished from underneath him as he landed like a cat on his feet, so nimble. He was then instructed by a random mediator to sit with the team he was assigned.

Now in an enclosed space the young spry ninja could finally remove his oxygen apparatus. The instructor spoke to Shizuka, only for him to misunderstand his hand extension, showing him the location of his squad as an invitation to shake his hand. Shaking his hand furiously the shinobi recoiled in shock, probably wondering if Shizuka was actually an idiot. Like a goldfish, his attention dropped quicker than a drop of water as he saw his designated spot. Two of his comrades had already made their way into the stand and had begun to talk, not wanting to feel left out the excitement took over. Waving his hand in the air, Shizuka began to shout, “Hey guys!” now cupping his hands around his mouth as to somehow amplify his voice, “HEY! IT’S ME, SHIZUKA!” Sprinting up to his teammates he kept making himself painfully noticeable, drawing unnecessary attention to Squad 2.

“Oooh you’re pretty” Shizuka said as he ogled the blonde haired kunoichi. The gust of wind collecting behind him would cascade forward, blowing the flower out of her hand, intended for Eita, and push her hair and clothing back along with Eita’s. “I like your bow! My name is Shizuka. I’ll be your partner from here on out. You look familiar…” Shizuka kneeled in real close his breath could be felt on her skin. “Are you from Kono—“ he trailed off as the glint of Eita’s mothy cloak. “Whoaaaa who are you and what is this?!” he sang like a small child discovering something new to play with. Running his fingers through the cloak Shizuka’s face melted into an expression of euphoria, “Pet the magic rug. Pet the magic rug.” It was safe to say S
