When Darius snapped the memory into the memory glass, the expression he held in the still image was one of utter shock. Not only had been surprised by Myra's attempt at words, but Artemis had planted an unexpected kiss on his cheek. Darius laughed at the image captured before it vanished from its surface. Everyone's high spirits really kept his mind off of the dreams he'd had since meeting Malgormuun.

The dreams were always distorted memories of humans arriving in Avalia. It was what he witnessed when he smashed the crystal, but the dreams were more focused and in depth. It was all their moments before they ultimately perished. Malgormuun was always there, almost like a presenter of these memories. Pausing and rewinding to prove a point or make a comment. As hard as it might be for Darius to experience this, he didn't refuse it.

After several minutes, the amora would land onto a landing pad reserved for high ranking military officials, politicians, and those with enough amas to pay at the Laastak Transport Center. Darius stepped off of the amora with an excited look on his face as he carried Artemis in his arms. Upon him was a city that he only thought could exist as CGI in movies and televisíon shows. He was from a large city himself, but Roshmi was something out of fantasy. Gold and white armored light elf soldiers subordinate to Airdan stationed themselves around the amora that Darius and his group exited. Darius couldn't help but look around at the unique Avalian architecture of the transport center.

Due to being on a more exclusive landing pad, there weren't many people in view, but as the group ventured towards the Roshmi City Grand Hall, Darius and company would lay eyes on all sorts of different people and even more architecture both unique and a bit familiar to Darius. He also noticed something else that would be peculiar to everyone in his company.

"What's with the shriveled up trees?" Without context, Darius didn't give it too much thought to the withered trees affected by dark elves ensuring that Roshmi City would not flourish.

Several minutes more and the group arrived at a giant dome shaped building, the Roshmi City Grand Hall. Airdan ordered his men to remain in the immediate area as weapons were not permitted in the grand hall. There to greet the group was an elderly elf with a friendly smile on his face. Darius smiled back not even noticing that it was the demon he had been wary of on Daka. Umber the Wraith.

"Oh my don't you all look splendid and such an interesting group. Two demons, an elf, and a demihuman. Please make your way inside and feel free to seat yourselves and get acquainted with the other early arrivals."
Can I sneak in as well 😁

Confusion struck Damien as Astraea left flustered and in a hurry. She hadn't even given him her beat-up copy of the Shatter Me novel. Damien didn't know what to make of the interaction as he hadn't gained anything from it. In fact, he lost quite a bit to the woman. Time, money, and effort. All because of… Who knew? Did he even want to know?

Damien figured he'd run into Astraea again. Ember Grove was small and she was just too interesting to let slip away. He continued to stare at the entrance. The thought of following her was tempting, but he had to go see… Lucy. He sighed as he pictured the bird's dark judging eyes staring blankly into his. He had been moving about aimlessly without her guidance, so meeting with her was definitely needed.

He walked outside and walked southbound in order to hit the treeline. The rain had finally stopped, but it had gotten rid of some of the foot traffic in town. Damien disappeared into the woods where he found Lucy, his familiar and guide.

"Good morning Lucy. What's the plan?"

"Koou...pl?"

Darius's eyes shot open while Airdan raised an eyebrow. All eyes were on the demon the moment her voice uttered an attempt at a word. It was clear she was questioning "couple," but it wasn't clear on whether it was the word or the idea she was questioning. And yes that was important to note, but what needed to be addressed was the fact that Myra, the demon that never spoke actually said something!

"Interesting. So she's not a mute after all." Airdan said while Artemis embraced Myra in celebration. He wore a friendly smile before looking to the very silent Darius to take note of his reaction. Darius was a human belonging to Aklenroth, but Airdan was sure he could use him if he knew what motivated him most. For the two days he was with Darius he discovered that there were two things Darius cared for and Airdan would exploit those when the opportunity presented itself.

"Myra you…" Darius' look of shock soon formed into one full of joy. "MYRA YOU SPOKE!" Darius' felt like he could launch out of his seat from his excitement. "Couple." Darius repeated the word almost as if to assure its legitimacy to her. "I can't believe you spoke! We have to celebrate this. After the ball, we're going to eat big Myra, like all you can eat! Nothing but meat!" Darius said as he reached his hand out towards her for a high-five, a gesture he had taught her back when Skar was traveling with them. I wish Skar could be here… I guess I have to make it my goal to have Myra speaking better than her before we meet her again

Darius peered through the window of the Amora when Artemis brought up the city being beautiful. His only experience with Avalian settlements so far had been Orc Landing and Moon Elf Village, so the sight of Roshmi City left him awestruck.

"This is incredible. It's crazy how this is still even Avalia… Why the hell didn't the DROMs drop me here?! Hey, you know what? I'll take a photo... or memory or whatever you guys call it here." Darius pulled out the memory glass he had purchased the day prior and held the reflective side out to the window. The memory glass was one of the simple two dimensional kind with a black and silver decorated frame to it. "Snap!" Darius smirked as he looked at the glass to see the clear image of the city captured before it vanished from the reflective surface. He then looked to Artemis and Myra with a bit of a smirk as an idea came to him. He placed his masquerade mask and then put on the hat that completed his outfit. Finally, Darius held the memory glass out with the reflective side facing him. "Hey you two come in close. Tonight, I have two beautiful dates!" Once the two were in position, he'd snap the memory.

It was unlike Damien to be so clumsy... Oh wait, he wasn't. Sure, he his focus had been occupied by the reactions to the comment he made towards the group of werewolves conversing, but the young woman or whom he assumed to be a young woman ran right into him. The sound of fluttering pages were followed by several low thuds.

A scowl was his initial expression, but the foul look faded once he identified the apologetic culprit of golden locks. He noticed that despite her quick apology, her focus was on gathering the books scattered about on the floor. It was a pitiful sight, and made Damien frown in slight contempt for the stranger, but perhaps there was something here. The werewolves had been of interest, but his expression shifted neutral in order to seize a moment with this stranger. Like Nathalie, she could prove to be useful to him, to shroud his darker intentions in her innocence. Having met both women in the same place was what Father Xavier might call a blessing. So Damien made his move, quickly picking up one of the dropped books off of the ground before it was kicked about too much by passerbys.

Brushing it off a bit and shutting it appropriately, Damien was able to take a peek at the title. "Shatter Me" A smirk quickly etched his face as the title caught his eye the way it was meant to but not reasons intended. Damien thought of Kyran once more...

Once his eyes found the stranger's, as blue as blue could be. He could tell she had been the first to gaze judging by the look she was giving him. It was as if she had been given enough time to discover something that filled her with a hint of sadness. Why is she looking at me that way? Everything in him shouted at him to back away from her, but he stood his ground and broke his discomfort with a smile and the offering of stranger's novel.

"Don't be. It was technically my fault... I was following my nose, instead of paying attention." Not a total lie.

Following his nose... Astraea's heart began to race as a realization took form.
That confirms it... He's a werewolf.

The kind witch did not have anything against werewolves, far from it. In fact, back in the year 1867, she was involved in a serious relationship with a female werewolf by the name of Lily. Lily had saved Astraea from being burned at the stake by hiding her under the floorboards of her home. The two were inseparable and had dated for quite some time. They had even considered the idea of marriage. It wasn't until Lily's pack had found out about their affair when issues transpired. The Black Forest clan were notorious for their prejudice against witches and vampires alike.
Their malice and judgement were key components to the destruction of the unusual pairing. Having been left with a choice between the love of a woman and the acceptance of her family, Lily chose the latter. Being apart of a wolf pack created a deep bond. One of which she felt obligated to protect. Immediately she cast Astraea out of their home. The poor witch had nothing to her name but the clothes on her back and the tome in her hand. The betrayal had led to months of Astraea being chased by hunters of the supernatural. With no home and no weapons to defend herself, the blonde had barely escaped with her life.

Over the past few centuries, she had seen and experienced many different cruelties. All of which made her wary of strangers. Her loving nature made Astraea crave companionship. A family. All the while her fear of letting someone in kept her alone.

"Thank you." Her voice cracked, scratchy with nerves.

Almost reverently she placed the novel back in her bag with its' siblings. It had been a while since she talked to anyone outside of Jinx and the few citizens she was forced to interact with. Cashiers were hard to ignore when running errands.
Unsure of what to do with her hands she crossed her arms effectively hiding them. Her socially awkward tendencies caused Astraea to rock back and forth on her heels.

"Um... my name is Astraea?" She mumbled, the words sounding more of a question than an introduction.

Damien's friendly smile faded a bit as he watched the woman place her scuffed book into her bag. His gaze stuck to the bag for a moment as he took note. He had heard her give thanks, but he did not want to accept it. He saw his action as just being decent to someone else. Thanks was not needed. To deserve that, he needed to do something with a lot more kindness behind it. When she introduced herself, he couldn't help but to let out a small chuckle. Almost as if to let her know that there were no ill feelings and that she didn't need to be so nervous.

"I'm Damien." His introduction was a stark opposite to Astraea's, giving off a strong sense of confidence.

Damien. That name suits him. Astraea thought, smiling politely.

"And I should be the one saying sorry… Actually! Wait here for a sec.

Astraea's eyebrows knitted in confusion. She opened her mouth to protest but was immediately interrupted by his insistence.

"Just stay right there, I'll be right back." Damien walked into the sea of people lightly crowding the walkway of the mall, destination in mind.

Meanwhile the kind witch looked around the edge of the food court perplexed. Should she stay here? She barely knew him. Despite all rational, her intuition caused her to stay put. Curiosity getting the best of her. As she waited she took notice of a few of the pedestrians milling about the mall. A lot of citizens were human, looking to be in their mid-teens and spending time with friends.

She spotted a group of individuals out of the corner of her eye. A male and two females. Nothing out of the ordinary, the three of them stood talking just like any other group. Belatedly she noticed another male standing to the side. His headphones were on, but seemed to be paying attention to the conversation.

More werewolves? Astraea gulped, her heart jumping into her throat.
That's too many creatures for comfort, I gotta get out of here.

Before she could escape, however, Damien had returned with something familiar in his hand. "Shatter Me, right? The new one?" Damien held the book up towards Astraea while his free hand reached for her bag. "We'll trade and we can call it even." Astraea had other books that were probably in worse condition, but Damien figured the girl wouldn't accept the large gesture of replacing all of her tattered books.

Normally Astraea would not accept something so generous from a stranger. Gifts could leave strings attached inadvertently creating a bond between two people. Unfortunately, her fear was overtaking her, choking off her air and taking control. The walls of the food court were closing in. Panic was causing her vision to blur.
With shaking hands, she grabbed the copy in pristine condition and dumped it into her bag.

"Thanks. It was nice meeting you." In an awkward attempt to end the conversation she bowed before whirling around and running towards the exit.

Air... I need to get some air. Her mind screamed as she slammed her body against the exit, finally free of the building.

It wasn't until after a few heaving gulps of oxygen that she realized what she had just done could be considered rude, if not severely weird. This wasn't the first time that fear had overtaken Astraea. A few decades ago, her most recent near-death experience had plagued her with nightmares, panic attacks, and social isolation.
After sensing the group of werewolves, her paranoia turned a casual interaction into a possibly lethal ambush. Frowning, her cheeks burning red with embarrassment, she started walking towards home before coming to a sudden stop.

"Fuck." She cursed, stomping her right foot in frustration.
"I forgot the cat food."

She began to rummage through her bag in an attempt to find her wallet when she noticed two copies of the same novel.

"Double. Fucking. Fuck." Astraea growled, cursing her neverending bad luck.
"I forgot to give him his book."

After a night of failing to locate any rebels, Umber found it best for he and Azriel to return to Aklenroth's castle in order to recollect themselves and prepare for the ball they would attend the following evening. Aklenroth had briefed the roles of himself, Azriel, and O'ner since they were conveniently available. That was the first time he caught sight of the other human aligned with Aklenroth. And to Umber's surprise, this human was just as interesting as Jack. Darius lacked Jack's malice and his bloodlust. His emotions were disgusting to the demon, but his company would raise the brow of any Avalian. A demon… no, two demons and it was said he had also been accompanied by an orc previously. Then there was the demihuman mermaid. Her emotions could be a treat. She held so much back that he was tempted to snatch her away. The demon decided against it, or perhaps he would pick another time to inflict pain on her.

At the moment, he stood at the entrance of the Roshmi Grand Hall in his chosen appearance for this occasion. Tasked with the duty of greeting guests, the demon needed to look presentable and Aklenroth used his magical prowess to make him so. Azriel despised his appearance, but he just instructed her to use his temporary look as fuel for her rage against the rebels when the time was right. The body he stood firmly in was that of an elderly light elf wearing black suit, a decorative gold vest, and a black and gold beaked mask that resembled that of a plague doctor. He definitely fit the bill of Azriel's most desired target.

Umber smiled with his new face. It had taken him hours, but he was able to become proficient in making desired facial expressions using his lips. He now knew why Azriel loved to smile. The expression seemed to increase his excitement. He'd greet the guests with a performance of joyful glee as he thought of the possibility of breaking one their minds into many pieces. Azriel was positioned within the grand hall as an early bird attending the ball.

"Are you as excited as I am Azriel? It is a rare occasion... Where our prey literally walks into our grasps... How easy this will be… I will be sure to whisper to you and the others of the most delicious guests in attendance… Perhaps we will finally see Elsea… my next potential project."

Preparation for the Ball

If the first day on Daka hadn't been a long one, the next day made sure to make its claim. Kol started Darius early for training, right before breakfast. This time, Darius avoided getting pummeled as badly as the previous day due to Malgormuun increasing his physical capabilities. Throughout the day, Darius remained friendly to Artemis despite what was said about her. He even carried her in his arms to help her get around since her ability to walk wasn't the best.

Then came the time to stand before Aklenroth, king of Avalia. He wanted to see Artemis for himself as well as introduce Darius to some of the prominent figures of his military. During this time, Aklenroth shrouded himself by wearing a cloak and employing a mysterious fog that provided more concealment around his figure. Darius was sure Artemis and Myra showed their aversion to the Lich King, while he stood firm.

One of those introduced was the tall and quiet General O'ner Faister, an undead who could change his form. Darius knew Myra wouldn't be a fan, so he kept his distance from him. Another was a large floating menacing demon known as Umber. Darius kept his distance from that guy too, because fuck that! Keeping his distance did limit the view of what Darius could only describe as an angel with black wings. Her name was Azriel, Umber's partner. They held no official rank and were simply referred to as Wraiths. Even if Umber was absent, the woman's amused grin was something to be wary of. Lastly, there was a red-headed light elf that was an outlier to the others in appearance, General Airdan Vasys in his radiant armor that resembled quality silver. He and Darius seemed to get along immediately as the man seemed excited to be helping Darius and his friends prepare for a ball that was supposed to have key players of the rebellion in attendance. Darius was informed that it was unlikely for any humans to show at the ball, but it was possible. Darius' job was to identify rebel figures using himself as a means to draw them out. He was also briefed on not giving away their allegiances or identities.

Once that was over with, it wasn't Kol who was the babysitter, but Airdan. He was kind of a breath of fresh air compared to Kol, though Artemis still scowled at him from time to time due to him being an elf. Airdan took the group south in an amora to Moon Elf Village to meet with a tailor he knew of. The trip proved to be interesting for many reasons. People stared at Darius and Myra but kept their mouths shut as they were in Airdan's company. The most eventful moment was finding Myra something to wear, but in due time the group figured out what worked best for the demon. And despite Artemis' reluctance to leave Moon Elf Village, she chose to stick with Darius and Myra. The group spent time shopping in the village's market while waiting for the completion of their outfits and masks. Darius managed to purchase a memory glass and get a haircut before the group returned to Daka. Up until leaving for the ball, Airdan tried to instill as much knowledge on ball etiquette as he could as well as how to dance to the music that would be played at the ball. Aidan proved to be a great help and a real standup guy, even if it was all an act.

"This day came around way too soon. I still need to get used to these ears." Darius tugged on his pointed ears a few times as he sat in the amora flying smoothly over Avalia. Everyone was dressed and ready to attend. All they needed to do was arrive and partake.

"Don't fret Darius. You are going to fair well if you follow my lead… Red irises, dark skin, and that sparky personality give you quite the exotic appeal. And with the precious Myra at your side, many may consider you a demon yourself. A demon couple with…" Airdan looked to Artemis. "...their servant? It makes the most sense. That or a slave, but your beauty at this moment makes that seem unbelievable at best." Airdan was a flatterer. Humility was easy to play for an elf who had nearly all he could ever want.

"Demon couple?" Darius looked at Myra with a questioning as if to ask if she was okay with it even though she might not have even completely understood Airdan's words. "Want to be my date?" Darius presented both of his index fingers apart and then pushed them together. He wasn't sure if Myra would understand. He honestly didn't even know if Myra could be intimate. She was intelligent, just… Tarzan and Jane made it work, so why couldn't we… No. Myra is my… I don't know. She's my friend so I shouldn't think like that, right? For some reason, seeing her with her outfit on made him see her differently at the moment or maybe it was just Airdan's words getting to him.

Vessia was the name of the demon Darius had met in the dining area. She came off as a much more conservative individual. Short and direct in her answers, but delivered them with a soft tone. As she provided a meal to him, Darius asked about what she thought of Aklenroth. The demon claimed to be indifferent to the Lich King and that many demons felt the same. Aklenroth had essentially conquered the demons by defeating their queen and mother, Lilith and sealing her away. Most demons accepted this as power is a law amongst their kind, but there were few that couldn't stand to lose their mother and still despise Aklenroth for it. Darius was honestly intrigued by the history he was hearing from Vessia.

Skar had shared what she could about Avalia to him, but there were times she lacked knowledge or lacked the drive to share the information. Vessia however had a well of knowledge… a well that never smiled or frowned at him. Her neutral stance on things was almost relieving, so relieving that he went ahead and asked her about Malgormuun. What Vessia told Darius… changed things.

Once Darius returned to the bedroom, he found Myra still loving the soft bed and Artemis sleeping in the bathtub. Her pink tail was hanging limply over the edge.

"What the… I guess that's what's comfortable for mermaids… sirens." Darius almost whispered the last word with how softly he said it. He noticed Artemis' head was resting where the wall and the edge of the tub met. "Probably not that comfortable." Darius made his way to Myra with a smile to show that he was in a good mood. He grabbed a pillow from the bed and carried it to the tub. Then he gently propped it under Artemis' head. "Good night, Artemis." He said softly before making his way back to the room and dressing down. "Myra. Remember when we first met?" Darius plopped down on the bed beside her. "It was kinda like this... We were out in the forest instead and you poked and pinched me until I woke up tho…" He faced Myra with a warm smile. "This is the more comfy version..." Darius then softly pinched Myra's cheek. "Where I poke and pinch you!"

Darius cherished these moments where he could forget about what was going on and talk to Myra. At times he wished she could talk back to him. Tell him what she thinks of things or about herself. How old was she and how did Aklenroth know about her? Why does she not have anyone? Why can't she speak? Darius was sure not even she knew why. He grasped her hand and squeezed it. Everyone he had met had their motives and stakes in this world. Some were upfront while others concealed their intentions, but Darius knew that Myra was there for just him and he appreciated it more than anything that this world had to offer.
