When approached, Alexander had collected himself just enough to appropriately greet her.

"Yes, at most this evening has treated me fairly well. And it's always lovely to see you as well, Maeve." Alexander took her hand and planted a kiss on it. And though he straightened up, her hand remained in his. It's a shame you declined my offer to join my clan. There is much I would sacrifice to turn you… Perhaps you'll change your mind in a century or two. He released her hand from his gentle grasp. "I didn't think you would grace this campus with your presence, even with the temptation of viewing and possibly the last of my artwork." Alexander stated rather smugly. "But since you're here, I have an inquiry about a woman you may have run into."

A loud yawn broke the silence within the Operation Humanity base outside of Ember Grove, at what was a quiet and undisturbed workspace. Beneath the desk of the office workspace, rolled out a man tucked away in a sleeping bag. He crawled from his makeshift bed wearing nothing but a t-shirt, boxers, and socks as he rubbed his eyes. The first thing he did was grab his cellphone and look through his messages as he sloppily put some shorts before going forth to complete his first few daily objectives. This included brushing his teeth, washing his face, emptying his bladder, and putting on some clothes that he could actually operate in.

After several minutes, Sean was dressed and spun up on the recent significant activities occurring in Ember Grove. The most important being the arrival of a werewolf that Trotter had created a targeting packet on. Seeing the word 'Capture' alone on the forwarded document pertaining to Finn Cooper caused Sean to immediately look at what Finn was classified as. A sigh escaped him.

A werewolf… and a pureblood at that. Capturing a werewolf wasn't easy. For one they could blend in with humans so much better than vampires. Sean had heard stories of people knowing a werewolf for years before discovering what they were. But hey, if you knew what you were looking for, there was only so much one could do to evade a persistent hunter.

Sean walked from his office space, wearing black cargo pants, brown and black hiking boots, with a plain brown t-shirt tucked into his pants. His destination would be the intelligence division, where he'd ask for further information on Finn Cooper. The Ember Grove University campus was a good start, but he doubted the kid would remain there long. The sun had just gone down, and finding the wolf while remaining vigilant of other threats would prove difficult. That meant he might have to reach out to one of the other hunters.

His choices were interesting at the moment. Colonel Trotter had grouped the hunters to operate in different settlements in the area. Ember Grove had been designated as the crowned jewel of sorts. Some of his colleagues on base had made note of how ragtag the group was. Sean would argue that fact made them quite versatile. He was aware of the contractor known as Valentin worked at the university as a professor.

Maybe I can get the big guy to do some of the mundane stuff in locating the kid… I can worry about the capture part. He seems more like the type that would be better at putting many silver rounds in the wolf.

He sent a secure message to Valentin's phone that simply asked, Do you have any leads on Finn Cooper? I'm on my way from base. Figured you would be on top of the situation first.

Sean thought of Remy and as well as Angel but then disregarded the two. They had their strengths, but Sean felt it was much too early to deal with what he considered to be their weaknesses. Together, the two experiments could pile up variables up to the moon if one didn't utilize them properly. Even then, you would have to ensure several contingencies were put in place. For now, he would avoid the two ladies.

A many-sided war was waged at the banquet tables as gluttonous opponents gathered to fill their stomachs. Despite the class that many tried to uphold, he found many stuffed faces, which only helped hype up how delicious the food had to be. And despite posing as a demon, Darius couldn’t keep the bright smile on his face every time he heard Myra’s voice. He managed to squeeze in between a few guests so he could get a few portions of different foods before all the good stuff was taken. A lot of it was different than what Zorrah prepared back on Daka. There was a larger variety of seafood and different types of vegetables. There was also the wine, champagne, and mead at the table. His eyes lit up at the alcoholic beverages but something kept him from grabbing a glass. Would it be responsible for him to start drinking when he had a job to do? One wouldn't hurt, right? Just one glass… Maybe two.

Before he could indulge in food and drink, however, Myra suddenly let go of his hand while trailing after one of her papers that was oddly fluttering away from her. “What the?” Darius uttered before following after her, and then...

"Let the dances begin! Follow the magic!" A voice bellowed through the ballroom.

"Right now?" He was a bit caught off guard by the announcement and figured that the man Myra’s paper flew towards was her first dance partner. He wore a similar mask to Vaeril in that it was a golden skull. He sized up the stranger before nodding with a smirk. “Myra, it’s time to dance. Remember what Airdan showed us. How to dance like an elf? The fancy dance! He seems like he’s okay, but if he gives you trouble, you can bite and scratch him as much as you want.” His smirk turned devilish as he looked at Baraian and winked. Darius didn’t want Myra in any danger, but he also knew she could readily defend herself. “Have a good time you two!” He then playfully poked Myra’s side. “We’ll eat after the fancy dances are done. I promise.”

Darius then reached towards his pocket, but one of his papers had already flown up towards his face with the number "3" showing. He carefully grabbed it with his thumb and index finger, curious as to what would happen next. That’s when things got pretty bizarre, yet captivating at the same time. Everything around the paper seemed to darken and blur as he felt it tug his hold as if guiding him across the ballroom floor. He followed it step by step as it became the center of his focus. As if only it mattered at that moment. He silently stepped through the crowd of guests before he noticed the tugging had stopped. His paper and another's made contact, collapsed, and then folded into each other, forming a star-like shape that slowly rotated and elevated upwards.

Looking past the star, Darius' crimson eyes met a partially masked familiar face. He didn't believe he could forget a smirk like that. It wasn't the kind of smile that was made from being lighthearted or giddy. It was more like excitement or perhaps it was pleasure… but from what?

"Azriel." He said softly as if confirming her identity. Darius stared for a moment as he admired her appearance. The deep hues of red went so well with the black. And that partial mask completed by the application of her own matching makeup possibly made her outfit one of his favorites so far. How could a beauty accompany such a terrifying creature like Umber? His open-mindedness allowed him to push on and not worry so much about his first time seeing her at the castle. This was the first dance at the ball after all. The fun part. The easy part. "I must be lucky..." Darius attempted a forward bow which wasn't all that graceful. He brought the wrong foot forward and quickly retracted it and corrected himself. Shit. Airdan, I will fix this! He then gracefully transitioned to the ceremonial bow which was a surprise to even himself before looking up at Azriel and smirking. "...I get to dance with an angel." Darius said as he stood upright and held his hand out for Azriel to take.

Alexander was presenting some more works to the gentleman interested in the purchase of his portrait of Shay Knight when he was interrupted by one of his men.

"Mr. Drake." The vampire addressing Alexander was met by a cold face, absent of emotion. It was as if whatever the bodyguard uttered next would decide Alexander's mood. Like stroking a paintbrush across a blank canvas. "One of your paintings was vandalized by a child with a black marker. A woman re-" He was interrupted by a raised index finger. Alexander shut his eyes for a few seconds as he attempted to bury his frustration in silence. The guest beside him just stared at the interaction, positive the gentleman who had been so articulate just a minute ago would explode into primitive rage.

Alexander opened his eyes with a scowl.

"Vandalized? Which portrait? And where is this child?" Alexander demanded. The bodyguard led Alexander to the portrait, the one he had smirked at moments ago with the mother clenching her babe close in a raging inferno.

"She exited on a skateboard. We didn't want to cause too much of a scene. And with only two of us, we remained her. She did speak to a fellow that Demetrius should be speaking with about the situation now."

Alexander listened in silence as he stared at the joke a child had made of his work. A part of him blamed himself for not expecting this from these creatures. Even in a setting that would attract the best of them, there still remained savages. His hands clenched into fists.

Meanwhile, Alexander's other bodyguard Demetri aimed to approach Valentin with the impression that Remy was his responsibility, perhaps even his child after witnessing their brief interaction, but the man was already making his exit once he greeted another man. Demetri figured the large man may have just been scolding the child for her actions. For now, it was out of his hands. Despite his feelings about the portrait, the show had to continue. He took the painting from its place, turned it around, and propped it against the wall.

Alexander stepped out into the main area where most guests were gathered with furrowed eyebrows while adjusting his jacket. His eyes darted about as he searched for anyone who appeared to be younger than a college student. He noticed that more guests had gathered, and one, in particular, caught his eye.

"Ms. Brannigan… A pleasure. Come chat with me when you're free." Alexander said with a slight smile as he passed one of the few witches he did not mind holding a conversation with. As he headed towards Demetri, the other bodyguard, Charles, called to file a report to the campus security who assured they would send someone over to assist them if the situation persisted. For now, Charles would stand by the entrance where his sole job was to make sure the vandal did not return.

Sure, Alexander could deal with this problem in an easier and much more violent manner, but that was not the kind of man he was. He didn't want to cause a scene that would leave him unable to show his face in town ever again.

"I was thinking of discussing prices for-" The guest from earlier was rudely cut off by Alexander.

"Demetri, sell the man the painting he wishes to purchase. I need a moment to myself." Alexander's patience with the lesser was running rather thin. He pulled a flask from one of the inner pockets of his jacket and took a quick swig of the contents inside before returning it. He seemed to calm some.

Be as useful as you can Charles and Demetri… As after tonight, you won't be any longer.

Alexander learned and realized quickly that the "intellectuals" of today were very different than those he had graced his presence with a few decades ago. Back then, it wasn't art paintings, but the conducting of a symphony orchestra. All in attendance were well dressed and quiet at that time. Here and now, the guests appeared as uniquely misfitted youngster with a sprinkle of old folk trying to maintain the appropriate image for these sorts of gatherings The old vampire already knew which event he would favor whenever he chose to look back on them. Still, this exhibition meant much to Alexander. Validation of his skill and graduation from a hobby.

"Excuse me, are you Mr. Drake?" It was a question asked by a man that appeared to be in his forties. A hint of grey in his black slicked-back hair. He wore a black blazer over a clean white shirt. Alexander failed to smile right away but upturned his lips the moment he spoke.

"Yes, I am Mr. Drake. Are you finding the presentation to your liking?" Damien greeted. The man that appeared more like a vampire than himself nodded enthusiastically with a paper cup of wine in his hand.

"It's nice."

"Nice?" Alexander took a slight offense to the comment. His inquiry was sharp and swift. His smile was long gone. The man chuckled at the reaction.

"Don't bite my head off. It's actually stunning. Where did you get your models? They gave you so much to work with and you captured their emotion so well!" The man looked to the portrait of Shay Knight. "'A Sliver of Beauty Found...' I see more than a sliver in this one." It was at that moment that a young blonde man stepped into the exhibition. Alexander wasn't sure if it was the look of him or the smell of him that bothered him more. Alexander's two bodyguards that stood as still as statues within the exhibition's main room had their eyes on the werewolf but only watched. Alexander didn't favor having such a guest, but it seemed he wouldn't have to deal with him much.

"You sound like you want to take her home with you… but allow me to show you some of my other pieces within the other sections. I'd hate to take her down so soon." Alexander grinned as he led the gentleman to one of the sections connected to the main room. Within the section was a painting of a mother holding her child tightly with a blazing inferno surrounding her. This painting was a favorite of his. The woman had actually been trying to keep her child warm from the freezing cold in a temperature-controlled room. The flames were featured perfectly. It might have been what she wished was there. A genuine smile graced Alexander's face.

Every guest was greeted with a smile and every guest was read thoroughly by Umber. There were few that piqued his interest. Bararian, Sakura, and none other than Risa Millenia. And this wasn't just some hunch. This was indeed the fairy Xenelith had spoken of and right by hers was a… fox? This demihuman did not resemble what he saw in the picture or within Xenelith's vengeful thoughts. Still, this was a fox demihuman and it was safe to assume her was either the same one or closely related.

The fox, the make-believe princess, and…. That must be her…. Elsea... Yes... It must be her! Umber froze as he looked upon the woman that approached Risa and her male companion. A fair-skinned woman kissed by fire at birth. She was disguised as an elf, but that unmistakable ember that could ignite her soul gave her away. That potential was what had attracted him to her in the first place. It had withered a great deal, but it was still there. It was what drove her, carrying her will and guiding her heart. She had made friends that would help her forget the betrayal of her own kind, but the dark memories were not forgotten. The fire was still there. Hidden among pride, happiness, and confidence was what Umber prized more than any emotion… rage.

Umber nodded to the guards at the door, signaling to them that it was time to suspend entry into Roshmi Grand Hall. Dressed in black and gold, the false elf stood tall, even though he was only about 5'5" and possibly the oldest looking person in attendance. Before he stepped onto the ballroom floor, he relayed another message to his allies.

"The group hiding humans that we lost in River Kingdom have arrived… Risa Millinia is among them… No description needed. She's a bit hard to miss. Accompanying her is a canine demihuman as well as a female human with red hair and a… turquoise dress… Mmmm... I am entering the ballroom now. Doors are sealed, so I will partake in… the festivities."

Umber looked upon all those in attendance, his sights locking on the first human he had identified today. Belladonna. This girl was not Elsea, but he needed to be patient. Elsea was too precious to twist and bend, but this human who expressed so much concern may prove to be a fine playtoy. The young woman he had his eyes on was speaking with the two she had entered the ball with. A smile formed on his lips as his eyes looked to her company at her side.

"Hello human...You don't know me and yes I am speaking to you through your mind. You can panic, but it won't help you… How are you so afraid..? So weak? It's almost disgusting.... Fear of responsibility? What are you, a child? Interesting. The other humans I've felt were foolish, but you simply don't belong here, child. The weakest link, the easiest found… Not a threat, but the other human is… yes. I will kill her first. And you will get to watch."

Ember Grove. The small town that truly awakens while many of its people slumber. Most stories begin at the break of dawn, but it is not the case here. Gothic bloodsuckers blend into the nightlife scene. The hounds of the night freely weave between the trees of the forest they almost call home. There are also the crafty spellcasters secretly participating in out worldly rituals. Despite how well they all seem to thrive, these things don’t simply go bump in the night carelessly. It’s all thanks to the scarred misfits of humanity taking responsibility for being the boogie men to the monsters, even as the sun sets over the horizon, welcoming the night.

Hate, love, fear, joy, and even death lie ahead in a story where so many intentions and vendettas cross paths. We know who the players are, but how will the game turn out?

The sun slowly sinks away in the far west, painting part of the sky with the warm colors signifying its departure. The night is nigh and the air chills enough to remind those of Ember Grove that winter will rear its head in the coming weeks. Today marks Friday, and to some, it is the start of a reprieve and a chance at relaxation. To others, it’s a chance to let loose and party hard. The weekend begins, and so does its many ventures. This is a night to take advantage of. The question is... Will you?

The transition from day to night was deemed beautiful by many. It often signified a slow peaceful end to a day, no matter how dull or how lively it had been. It was a visual treat to catch in the sky slowly lost its natural light. And as many saw it as an end, Alexander and many of his kind viewed it as a start.

A black Rolls-Royce Phantom was neatly parked in its reserved parking space in the closest faculty parking lot to where Alexander’s art exhibition would be held at Ember Grove University. The moment the sun gave its visual farewell to the day, a black-suited driver exited the vehicle and opened the rear passenger side door to for the man of the hour. Alexander Drake made his exit, dressed for the occasion. His eyes peered towards the sweet ending of the sunset.

“And down she goes.” He commented before started for the wing of the university that housed its library. Alexander had taken less than five steps, and two well-dressed men were at either side of him. His personal security. Their eyes scanned their surrounding, while Alexander calmly walked to where his art exhibition would be held. He called the exhibition, A Sliver of Beauty Found. This was not is first, but would be his last. Painting portraits was beginning to become mundane with each stroke of the brush. Today would mark the end of a hobby that he grew quite fond of. It had taken so long to get this one right. Several decades of trial, error, and practice.

Ambiance

Alexander hadn’t seen many people on his way to the exhibition from the faculty parking lot. He had scheduled his exhibition at a perfect time. Only those interested in the beauty of fine art would have the want to attend the event. He had given the University a hefty “donation” in order to make this event possible, and they ensured it would be nothing but perfect. The university had a designated area used for exhibitions. It was typically used by students and even some haughty professors. The space welcomed guests to a large room with portrait painting produced by yours truly. A large table was positioned in the center of the large room with several platters of the finest assorted cheeses as well as an assortment of perfectly aged wines. Alexander figured choice could serve as a theme for the portraits of those who lacked such a thing. All the painting, every single one, was of a slave. Beautifully dressed and colored, yet there was a hint of despair in their eyes. As beautiful as many of the portraits were, the faces in them held a hint of sadness if you looked long enough. It’s what inspired the name for the exhibition. A Sliver of Beauty Found……. in despair. From the large room led to a few others that held paintings of events witnessed by Alexander over the course of his near three millennia of life.

With a welcoming smile, Alexander would greet those who entered and speak to the intellectual as well as the interested. He would barter with those willing to purchase a piece. If he was going to be surrounded by humans, he preferred it to be the ones with some kind of sophistication. The brutes and feeble-minded would ignore this event and partake in the uncivilized events that occurred on a Friday night. Smooth jazz music played within the area to give off the calm sophisticated ambiance he wanted and had read about in a few art magazines he had read over.

Alexander’s eyes peered towards a painting of a beautiful young woman he had completed only weeks ago. He had loved her eyes that reminded him of a calm overcast sky. Her elegant blue dress had fit so perfectly with the background only lit by the flames of Alexander’s fireplace, allowing shadows to dance around her form and compliment her raven black hair. And though he should have felt pride for possibly one of his best works, Alexander couldn’t shake the fact that this woman had recently escaped his domain of New Paeonia.

Darius had taken notice of Myra's reaction towards O'ner, but didn't worry too much about it. He'd been around her long enough to know when Myra was totally not okay with someone. Darius was just about to inquire about going to grab some food, but a light elf announcing the arrival of light elf governor Terneus Andros pulled his attention away.

"Ha! Now that's something." Darius commented with a smile, not expecting anyone to be that big of a deal. Not sure if anyone will top that entrance. He looked to Artemis who asked his thoughts on the ball so far. "So far so awesome. It's almost unreal." Darius replied as he pulled out his memory glass and took a snapshot of the ballroom. Once he was satisfied with the scenic view he captured he set his eyes on a roaming waiter delivering food to Artemis per O'ner's request. The food looked appetizing, and smelled even more delicious than it looked!

Darius couldn't help but notice that Artemis wasn't given any water, but assumed O'ner hadn't heard her request over Lord Terneus Andros' booming entrance. He could have conjured some up for her, but it was not advisable in this setting. Looking off to the buffet tables surrounded by hungry guests, Darius grinned as he saw the opportunity to join in while fetching a glass of water for one of his companions. While getting up from his seat, he heard O'ner's mention of rebels. "No, but I do have eyes on those banquet tables. I'm gonna head over there myself. You coming Myra? We can pick out what we want and how much we want." Darius grinned. He was also wondering if he would actually run into one the rebels. He wasn't actually sure how he would manage that though. It's not like these rebels had matching shoes or something. He removed his hat, placing it on his seat before holding his hand out for Myra to take. "We'll come back with some water for you."

Before they could depart from the table. Vaeril made his announcement. Darius' eyes lit up briefly at the sight of the light elf host as he knew who he truly was. And just like that, Terneus' entrance had been topped.

"Oh the dances are starting soon."

"That's right. And I have some numbers for you and your friends to grab! Two each." A well dressed feline demihuman presented a bowl of cut-up papers to their table. Darius grabbed two from the bowl and eyed the numbers on them before tucking them into the breast pocket of his jacket.

"Shall we feast?" Darius was ready to walk over soon as Myra grabbed her two slips of paper.
