In SoL, the 'goals' become the drama and interpersonal connections/histories players make with each other. Plus setting in in places like a school/college for example give you a timeline to work with.

Time to start the hunt for a decent SoL RP. I could make one, but it would be nice to be a player and a GM for once xD

About
Been at this game for a good while now. Starting RPing at the tender age of 15 back when Bebo was a thing. A year later I found myself forum Roleplaying and haven't really looked back since. Over these past ten years I have done practically every kind of RP you could imagine from Nation RPs and Arena RPs to 1x1s and Large group RPs. My last RP hobby was fighting RPs, which I have now decided to leave behind in order to pursue more SoL style Rps.

Outside of RP I am an aspiring writer, despite being terrible with words, as well as an avid gamer. If I am not on discord with the Guild or RPing in some way, I am probably on either my PlayStation or on Steam. Moved into D&D and ended up starting a podcast that has been an interesting journey.

Magic might be the thing of fantasy to most people, but little do they know that magic does indeed exist. Hidden in the shadow of society the magi roam, doing everything they can to keep their existence as secret as possible. Humanity just isn’t ready to accept the existence of magic.

There was a time, back before recorded history, where the Magi and Non-Magi lived in harmony. Magic was common knowledge and together, they began the process of taming the wild earth. Like everything else in the world, humans and their personalities got in the way. The world of the Magi began to fracture. There were those who wanted to use their magic to dominate the Non-Magi, who called themselves Corpus, while others believed that it was their job to protect the Non-Magi. They eventually formed what we know as The Guild today.

Inevitably the split occurred and the two sides went to war with one another. The Non-Magi stood back and watched as the entire world was nearly destroyed by the short lived conflict. The war eventually ended with the defeat of Corpus and its members. But The Guild, now victors, never saw what was coming. While the war ensued the Non-Magi of the world had begun to band together, even temporarily, just to bring down the Magi. Deeming them too dangerous to be allowed to live.

Weakened from their own internal war, the Magi didn’t stand a chance and began to flee and fracture further. Numbers dropped over the centuries more and more, until now roughly 1% of the world's population are Magi. The Guild, who had once preached co-operation with the Non-Magi, now had instead begun forcing the Magi world into hiding. Since then it has pretty much been the status quo; The Guild enforce the rules to ensure that Magic is kept a secret. The methods they do to achieve this can at times be draconian. They are by no means angels, but the majority of the Magi population understand that they need to remain hidden.

Every now and again however, the pot begins to bubble. People start to become annoyed at their forced isolation. They begin to feel caged and want to break free. This is where the Guild has had to step in and remind people that there isn’t a place for that kind of thinking. That same cycle is currently underway in the Satsuma province in Japan. Resentment and distrust towards the Guild and its practices have now formed into an organised resistance. Originally the Asian branch of the Guild had tried to suppress news of the rebellion, only to end up fanning the flames more. Now the Guild has lost control of the province and is in over its head.

A simple request has landed in the hands of the current Guild leader in New York: Send help. However, it isn't as easy as just marching an army across on the next plane. Any kind of large attack could possibly reveal the existence of Magic. Instead a more delicate approach is required. So instead of an army, a team has been assembled. Small enough to move around unnoticed but strong enough to get the job done. You have been selected to be a part of this team, to fly out to Japan and put this rebellion down for good.

Magic Explained
Scholars have tried over and over again throughout the ages to pinpoint the exact reason or trait that makes the magi the way they are. There were investigations into many a theory: were magi born under a certain star? (always a popular one), was it their physicality?, maybe it was because of some water they drank?

Regardless of whatever theory you want to believe the reasons and origins of magic have been lost. The only unifying symbol of Magi is the tattoo-like birthmark that they are each born with. The word birthmark is kind of a con however as a baby isn't born with this birthmark, it develops. Every birthmark starts as a small star shaped freckle which appears at birth. As they grow up and become stronger, the tattoo starts to form growing, expanding and becoming clearer, until their sixteenth birthday where it will be fully formed.

As for the types of magic that is another difficult subject. There have been many attempts to try and classify the fields of magic over history. Below is the most recent and widely accepted attempt:

Elemental: Your classical wind, fire, water etc magic. One of the most common fields and also the easiest to learn. Don't mistake that for being weak however, a large number of Guild leaders have been elementals. As for the types of elements… Let's just say the debate is still open on that one.

Example Classes: Pyromage, Hydromage, Aerotheurgist, Stormmage.

Physical: A most bizarre field of magic. Physical magic is split into melee and ranged types. Melee physical users tend to be able to add extra kinetic energy to their punches, while ranged fighters can throw balls of energy capable of knocking people back. A very useful non lethal form of magic. Of course it can be lethal if the user intends it to be. As they grow, they also tend to be able to create physical shields of varying types to protect people from harm.

Example Classes: Warrior Mage, Kineticist, Shieldmage.

Deception: Remember when you thought someone was watching you, but you turn around to find no one there? Odds are there was someone there and you have fallen prey to deception magic. While not usually lethal in itself, deception magi excel at finding other ways to get people to hurt themselves. Afterall, why bloody up your expensive $1000 dress when you can just get your victim to kill themselves for you?

Example Classes: Shadowmage, Shrieker, Illusionist.

Manipulation: There has been a long debate over the existence of manipulation magic. And to some extent there still is. Manipulation magic is a hybrid of both deception and physical magics and most commonly manifests itself as telekinesis. The argument has always been around whether telekinesis was physical or deception. So it ended up getting its own place. Though more has been added over time to give it a more concrete basis.

Example Classes: Telekinetic, Windbreaker, Atomist.

The Forbidden Magics: Just as it says in the title this class hides all the magics that the world should not know. Most have been lost to time and very few people actually know how to cast anything remotely to do with forbidden arts. They are forbidden for a reason.

Example Classes: Necromancer, Chronomage, Bloodmage.

Rules & Info

Let start off with the basic rules, nothing too taxing:
-1- Information in this post is liable to change at any time. I might add, or revise information as people join or I get one of those moments of ‘inspiration’. If I do make changes I will post to let everyone know.
-2- Writers must be able to show some level of competency. The writing requirements are two paragraphs per post. More is optional. Players must be able to demonstrate that they are able to commit to an RP. If players are new to the site, they simply need to demonstrate a high quality character sheet. This may sound harsh, but too many RPs have died because people were not willing to commit.
-3- Post frequency is Fortnightly. If everyone posts, then of course we can start earlier. I operate on a three strike system. On the third missed post, you are out of the RP. Of course if your first missed post and your last missed post are wildly apart from one another, then I will allow you to stay. Kicking people out is a last resort. I want us all to have fun.
-4- The above rule does not apply if you communicate with me and let me know you are struggling. It could be hectic life, lack of muse. I care not for the reason, just the fact you have communicated. If you communicate it means I can help you in whatever way I can. Afterall, I want to see this RP blossom.
-5- It goes without saying that whatever I say is final. I am not a dictatorial and am always willing to discuss things, but if I have to put my foot down I will.

The Guild
The Guild can trace its origins all the way back to the beginning of mankind. Ever since humans grouped together, the Guild has existed in some form or another. While it wasn't called the during the Great Magi War, they were the ones who defeated Corpus and saved the non-magi from a life of servitude. It was then that the Guild was back stabbed and hunted like rabid dogs by the non-magi. Since then, the Guild has established itself as the lone authority of the Magi world, thanks to the first Guild leader Sawa Laur De Silva and the creation of the Magical Anonymity Mandate.

As time moved on, four powerful lineages began to rise: De Silva, Leighton, Rushika, Louis. These four powerful families vied for power, each one rising to the top position, only to be toppled centuries later. By the 19th century however, the De Silva family had managed to solidify their position and since then, have single-handedly ran the Guild, creating in the process the single most powerful bloodline ever known.

Today, The Guild has evolved into a global law enforcement group. The Guild is split up into several operational areas: The Americas, Europe, Africa etc and each area has its own leader, HQ and the like. For the most part these branches are autonomous, however one of the operational leaders is known as the Primus Magi and has the say over everything and anything in the magical world. Since the early 19th Century the Primus Magi has always been from the De Silva family. This has in turn created a powerful bloodline and now some people have resorted to changing the leadership title to Demi-God. And in some respects they aren't wrong.

Each of the region leaders are responsible for enforcing the will of the Primus Magi as well as keeping conformity to the Magical Anonymity Mandate. How they do so is generally upto them. Once every year all the leaders meet up at HQ for a big meeting, to talk and discuss issues in the realm of the magi. They also convene whenever it is time to crown a new Primus Magi. The Guild's current HQ region is The Americas, moved from Europe in 1939 for obvious reasons. Since then it has been based out of New York in a deep underground campus.

@Randomness So, you won't need to know anything about what happened in the previous RPs. One of the advantages of having it set before everything happened. Everything that you will need to know will be posted in the OOC :)

- A Magical Incursion Roleplay

This Roleplay is based off my original Magic Incursion Roleplay that has been rebooted oh so many times here on RPG. This roleplay is set in the exact same universe, however is set ten years before (2009) the events of the original Magic Incursion.

Magic might be the thing of fantasy to most people, but little do they know that magic does indeed exist. Hidden in the shadow of society the magi roam, doing everything they can to keep their existence as secret as possible. Humanity just isn’t ready to accept the existence of magic.

Magic Explained

Magi gain their power from a tattoo like-birthmark on their body. The birthmark can appear anywhere on their body though most are easily concealable. Some are indeed larger than others and at one point it was thought that the larger a mark was the stronger the Magi was. This was recently proven as not being true.

Upon being born the birthmark starts off as a small black dot and develops into a full birthmark in the teen years. It is at this point powers begin to develop. Magi users do however only have one power. Some of the most powerful people in the world do wield multiple powers, but the cases of this are significantly rare and usually is limited to the leaders of the four Great families.

They are many forms of magic and powers. Elementalists are the more common magi powers, but are restricted to a single element each. Asides from that you have illusionists who can go invisible, or perhaps even change the reality that others see. New and exciting powers are popping up all the time so who knows what we will find.

You might have noticed that this is quite lore light for an original universe. However that is far from the case. I have a large amount of lore in the background I am holding onto, I just want to gauge interest and see who would be up for this kind of thing before committing. Plus i like to allow alot of freedom when people join, as players tend to have interesting ideas of their own.

I will be looking for a small group for this one maxing at around 5-6 people. If more people apply than can join then tough decisions will have to be made. Writing level will be around two paragraphs perhaps more for certain scenes. If enough people show interest I will post up a chars sheet for people to get started, then open the OOC.

Look forward to hearing from you all :)
