The problem with mixing for me is that it creates a lot of differences in location throughout the roleplay. We don't have a massive amount of people, which makes it difficult to guarantee every character will be with another. 1st years won't be hanging around with 5th year potion classes and vice versa.
That being said, I'm open to whatever the GM wants.
But then we have to already know each other dont we? And it removes all the fun of getting to know each other and being new to the place
True, but a bunch of 1st years casting Wingardium Leviosa won't do much good for the action part of the RP. There'll be some prior knowledge, of course, but it's not like everybody has to be friends.
I second the 5th/6th year notion, 5th in particular because O.W.L.s. Standardized testing is always an interesting addition.
Asha laid in her bed, staring at the clock on the wall of her small room. The airship had picked her up about a day ago, and Asha had expected that the airship would have arrived and delivered her at Beacon about a day ago as well. Unfortunately, that was not the case. The genius who had planned the airship route had arranged a zig-zagging route across all the continents with no sort of fuel conservation or time efficiency in mind. Asha wasn't sure whether the first trial at Beacon was a test of patience to see how long the young lady could bear sitting in a tiny room without her luggage waiting for her arrival and the first step towards a new life, or whether or not the people in charge at Beacon were imbeciles. Perhaps both.
Luggage had been stored safely away from Asha in the underbelly of the titanic commercial airship- as such, Asha only had her prized weapon with her in the room. To call it a "room" was an overstatement- the small chamber was more like elbow space, a cramped space with only a bed, a nightstand, and a small minifridge with a pitiful variety of food (and by pitiful, she meant two). There was also a bathroom, with the door to it jammed in the only place that wasn't a wall- above the headboard of the bed. Brilliance in engineering, of course.
Asha was painfully bored. Airship policy had it so she was stuck in the room while the airship was at max speed- which the airship had been in for the past two hours. Hence, she was confined like a prisoner to her little room, with no tools to use or toys to fiddle with. She had to content herself to stare at the lightbulb on the roof. Some entertainment.
Suddenly, a crackling noise was heard. Ash glared towards the pitifully small, low-quality loudspeaker propped up in the corner of the room. Finally! Something was happening.
"All passengers, we will be arriving at Beacon Academy shortly. You may now leave your rooms and wander about while we activate our landing gear. We should touch down in no more than ten minutes. Thanks for your patience."
Ash leaped from her bed with enthusiasm. She dusted off her clothes- a brown shirt and chocolate leather jacket, along with a skirt and a tall pair of boots- from the lack of movement in the past few hours, before opening the door and striding out to the viewing gallery.
The viewing gallery was the center of the airship- a long bridge with semicircular windows that gave a nice view of land beneath them. She approached said windows, gazing out at the lush forests below. In the distance, she could see arching stone castles and a large tower- no doubt the revered Beacon Academy.
She got lost in the scene before her. As a machinist and tinkerer, nature had become an afterthought for many of her years. It was good to experience it again.
She was so caught up in the scene, in fact, she lost all sense of her surroundings. No doubt were other people coming out to get a nice leg stretch and look at the view.
Physique Ash’s physical appearance is nothing she would consider boasting about, and has consistently complained about her stature. Standing at a tiny 5’1” and weighing a light 109 pounds, Ash is svelte and small, a rather short young lady that lacks in the “size” department. Ash has pale skin that makes her look like some kind of vampire that’s never seen sunlight before, and boasts short silver-gray hair and chocolate eyes.
Ash’s unremarkably short stature and lack of feminine shape are apparent at first glance, and a source of great agitation from the young lady. Ash is rather well-built, as most prospective Beacon students happen to be, with her short body being astonishingly stocky for a rather petite young girl.
Race Human
Team -
Personality A quirky girl with an undying drive for knowledge and endless amounts of curiosity, Ash is an inquisitive girl that always looks for satisfying answers for her curiosity. Spunky and outgoing, Ash enjoys mingling with other people, finding comfort in friendship, and is much more a team player than a lone wolf. Ash loves a good conversation topic.
Ash is a girl that could easily be described as brilliant, a tech genius that, once exposed to a piece of machinery, will stop at nothing to learn everything about it. Spending much of her free time fixing, tinkering, repairing, and improving, Ash is an empiricist and a creative soul, using trial and error to improve machinery to its finest.
Ash tends to never be bored- when she’s not fiddling with machines, she’s training, or having a chat, or playing cards, or doing something, anything that isn’t nothing. Ash is surprisingly impatient for a tinkerer, and can get rather angry with things don’t align with her expectations. As such, she lacks the ability to efficiently wait out enemies, preferring to deal with any problem the way she deals with machines- trying everything until something works.
For somebody that seems to have spent all their life in a workshop, Ash is a surprisingly avid and effective combatant, using savage tactics and even playing plain dirty to get above her opponents. Naturally competitive and not above being cutthroat, Ash specializes in utilizing brutal all-out attacks to overwhelm her opponents. Ash is quite a sore loser, and tends to hold arbitrary grudges, though she always uses her losses to work on improving her craft.
Ash's moderately upper-class background and partial isolation in the regions of southern Vale has made her rather inexperienced with bustling cities and the like, as well as Faunus, a species that Ash regards with curiosity due to her lack of exposure to them. Curious, but inquisitive, Ash views Faunus in an almost mechanical way, not being prejudicial against them but viewing them as a separate entities to humans. Ash looks to find what types of differences the two have, if any.
More than anything else, though, Ash is a compassionate person, as many Huntsmen and Huntresses tend to be. Ash tends to form deep bonds with those she’s grown to meet, and her concern for her companions always outweighs her competitiveness and impatience.

Motivation Hunting appeals to Ash for three distinct reasons- firstly, it gives her an opportunity to protect the unprotected, to aid the helpless, to fight what others fear. Secondly, it allows her to enjoy constant combat. And lastly, it provides an excellent place to both build tools for and actually test them in the field. Half the fun of tinkering, after all, is actually using what you made.
Brief Bio The Apparatus family is an ancient one, going back to the early days when Dust was first being applied for practical use. The Apparatus family forefather, Darius Apparatus, had built a Dust-powered railroad across Vale, and secured financial stability- if not an excess of it- for his descendants for centuries to come.
Unfortunately, the Apparatus family failed to innovate on their trains- the old inefficient model was practically obsolete compared to new Atlesian trains such as the Argus Limited. As such, the family had fallen on rather hard times, with their rustic-style tinkering and steampunk-style innovations failing to appeal to audiences that look for the sleek modern designs. As such, Ash's family- her father, Onyx Apparatus, her mother, Sepia Apparatus, and her kid sister Emerald- lived frugally in the traditional Apparatus family home on the south shore of Sanus. They were able to financially support themselves, but they barely hovered above middle-class and relied on antique weapon collectors and antiquarian object lovers to keep their home.
Growing up surrounded by technology and spurred on by two entrepreneurial innovators for parents, Ash developed a powerful love for machines and a brilliant creative mind. However, unlike her younger sister, Emerald, who had a natural penchant for business along with technology, Ash seemed to lean more into weaponry, developing Clockwork's prototype when she was 11 and finishing it by 12. Her family rushed her off to train in the actual application of weapons, seeing a Huntress daughter as a business opportunity along with a potentially lucrative career to marginally finance their operations. Showing a natural flair for combat along with her omnipresent mechanical curiosity and endless wit, Ash was accepted to Beacon and prepares for a fulfilling training to be a Huntress.
Semblance Ash’s semblance is a unique one titled Override. Discovered after a machine in her parent’s basement went off and practically crushed the young child, Override allows Ash to imbue her aura into anything mechanical, allowing her to manipulate it flawlessly. Ash can use this on any machine within a 10-meter range.
Override’s main use is with weapons- Ash can use Override to, well, override other people’s weapons, allowing Ash to lock them into one form, jam them, and crush the Dust crystals inside. Override is also used to maintain Ash’s own weapon and can be used on other machines, able to rapidly gain an understanding of any device and manipulate it. Ash has also combined her semblance with Lightning and Fire dust to power up golems and manipulate them with her own Semblance, though this ability comes with the danger of an explosion due to an overload of Dust along with a great physical and mental toll.
Override’s main weakness is the fact that it is used in conjunction with Aura- as such, Aura can be used to overpower Override’s effects. Continued resistance with Aura will eventually drain Ash’s Aura reserves and leave her nigh helpless against any danger she might face.
Weaponry Ash uses a steampunk-themed weapon titled Clockwork. Clockwork is, as Ash would put it, a "miracle of modern weaponry," a four-form weapon with surprisingly smooth transitions thanks to Ash's semblance and mechanical wit.
Clockwork's Form 1 takes the shape of a standard briefcase and is Clockwork's resting form. The compacted size makes this form of Clockwork ideal for traveling, but the condensed machinery also allows it to function as a neat shield or projectile if needed.
Clockwork's 2nd form takes the form of a hunting rifle equipped with a scope. It fires bullets with piercing capabilities and its range makes it Ash's go-to when engaging from a distance.
Clockwork's 3rd form is a grenade-launcher that fires compressed dust crystals with volatile explosive capabilities. Excellent for bombarding opponents and general destruction of all life.
Clockwork's 4th form is that of a shotgun, that fires a scattering burst of dust that deals large amounts of knockback and close-range pulverization.

Announcement: TEAMS AND PARTNERS Please move your lovely stuff to the Character tab kthx.
Team CKAI ("Sky") Cassius (Leader) Indigo
Ash Kaldyr
Team RSTC ("Rustic") Russell (Leader) Cyan
Sol Tinu
Partnerships are separated, leaders are highlighted. Teams were chosen by opposite character traits overall in an attempt to make things as interesting as possible. Any questions or concerns are not only accepted by appreciated- this kind of got cobbled together with me and an index card, so it's not necessarily the best, but I think these teams and pairings best promote that good ol' RP drama/growth thing we all love.
Obviously WIP but I wanted to post it so you knew he was in the works. I'll finish him when I get home to my laptop. I also posted him so I could get help with a name. I can't think of any I'm happy with ^_^;
Helios or Sol or something if you like the mythological path.
Zircon's a cool gem that comes in red shades
Or the omnipresent Blaze, which seems to fit well for fire-y characters.
Up to you, of course, just some random suggestions.
