They call it science "fiction" when there are currently more planets inhabited by robots than planets inhabited by humans.

If you're ever lonely, dim all the lights and put on a horror movie. After a while, it won’t feel like you're alone anymore. Problem solved.

Ubi tenebras, et non in lucem adducere

Superpowers.

No, they are no longer confined to the pages of comic books.

The story of superpowers began 200 years ago with what is now known as the X-200 meteor, a large meteor composed of a foreign substance. The meteor was spotted by astronomers and, after calculations were performed, it was determined that the meteor would collide with the Earth in 7 days. With the large meteor moving at high speed towards the planet and threatening impending doom, citizens everywhere prepared for the end of the world and said their last goodbyes, but disaster was averted as the meteor dissolved upon entering Earth’s atmosphere, causing a dust storm but not any sort of extinction-level threat nor any real physical casualties. It was considered a miracle by all, and life as normal continued soon after.

‘Life as normal’ ended, though, when a small population of people began to exhibit peculiar behaviors. ‘Peculiar’ being things such as telekinesis, teleportation, and other superhuman abilities that were unexplainable by conventional science. A long investigation into the nature of these mysterious abilities revealed a connection between the X-200 meteor’s material and the abilities. Scientists eventually concluded that the foreign substance, when absorbed into the body, caused a mutation in the genetic code that granted access to these superhuman abilities. These genetic mutations would travel down through families, continuing to provide similar mutations down the bloodline.

People soon realized, of course, that these powers provided opportunities to help the populace, as well as opportunities to harm the populace. Those that chose to use their powers for evil became the first generation of real-world villains, and those that chose to use their powers to stop these villains became the first generation of real-world superheroes. And so this new order of people, those endowed with superhuman abilities, began to battle in the streets, their newfound powers coming to blows against each other as onlookers could only watch.

Superheroes realized that in order to fight crime and superhuman villainy more easily, organization would be crucial. That led to the founding of hero companies across the world- large organizations of heroes that patrolled a specific region and fought villains in the area under its jurisdiction. All the hero companies were separate entities, but were linked and funded by the International Council on Superhuman Affairs, or ICOSA, a transnational body dedicated to regulating superpowers across the globe.

In the present day, thanks to these Hero Companies, being a full-time superhero is a viable career choice for individuals who do have mutations, currently sitting around 10-20% of the global population, roughly. Perhaps the most infamous of these Hero Companies is HERO, the Heroic Egalitarian Rescue Organization. HERO is a hero company situated in the city of Castleburg, a vibrant, buzzing, bustling city that is also cram-full of supervillainy everywhere. HERO is known, however, for getting the job done- often at the expense of the local infrastructure. Despite this, most HERO heroes are well-respected for their commitment to keeping their city safe, though this respect often also comes with hiding in fear of the damage they will cause.

As new threats arise in Castleburg, the citizens are confident that HERO will be able to counter each and every hazard that comes to light, and keep Castleburg safe, one day at a time.

Only time will tell if they succeed.

Where you stand might change that.

Ubi sunt mali, nos pugnare eam

Howdy!

In essence, this RP is a somewhat sandbox superhero RP with an overarching, loose plot that leaves plenty of room for your own exploration. I was thinking of a sort of amalgamation between Boku no Hero and One Punch Man when I was envisioning the concept, though I plan on applying my own spin on it to make it conceptually different. In essence, though, the idea of controlling an individual gifted with powers in a superhero way still stands.

If you have any questions, please feel free to let me know, and do make sure to leave a post here if you're interested. More general information will be coming in the main thread of interest is sufficient.

Thanks,

hey what's this about a Hitman

After being introduced with the blonde girl, Cairo (Cairo is usually a male name, Arabic, and this girl doesn't seen to be either, but this eccentricity could have plenty of possible explanations), a young man ran past Maddie and, without much introduction himself, quickly ran up and pressed the doorbell, a ring echoing out into the cool Oxford air. Examining him as she looked over, Maddie spoke up. "Err...I'm not sure that the doorbell does anything. We're probably going to have to wait until-"

It was around then that the door swung open, and a young man, appearing Indian in ethnicity, opened the door and welcomed the motley crew inside. A touch embarrassed now, Maddie quietly followed the man into the living room. If he had been standing with them, Maddie most likely would have assumed he was one of them, but the fact that he had already been inside the building implied he was either a master infiltrator or, somewhat more likely, he was a younger staff member, perhaps a recent Veritas graduate himself. As she walked in, Maddie examined the living room-kitchen combination- both seamlessly combined together, all in a somewhat modern appearance overall. Very chic, sophisticated, certainly livable. One hardship the Academy was not going to be implementing, clearly, was hardship of living.

The man introduced himself as Rabinder Singh (clearly an Indian name, so most likely Indian, told them where they could find their living spaces (very hands-off, disassociated, indifferent, information might be useful later, and had the house system inform them of when their first meeting would be (10 AM, 3 hours, attended by 3 individuals, presumably staff. Visible cringe by Mr. Singh at the mention of the name Elizabeth Lew, intriguing). And with that, the introductions there were over. Maddie turned to face Cairo as she proposed an explanation for what to do with the room situation, which Rabinder himself had obviously not volunteered any ideas. She nodded as she spoke.

"No complaint," Maddie said, picking up two pre-delivered suitcases with each hand after slinging a heavy bag over her shoulder. "I'll check upstairs first, if I may." And with that, she toted the heavy bags with little (alright, modest) difficulty up the stairs to select a room. Despite verbally agreeing to the proposition, Maddie had no intention of actually giving up the room she had chosen. She was no lightweight for sure.

Color me intrigued!

Thanks!
I will definitely consider it!
This seems to be an interesting idea. I have a character from a similar RP from years ago that I could dig up to use in this with some tweaks. Maybe two characters head to head... Consider me intrigued to know more.

Thanks!

you know how to tickle my pickle

I will take this as a compliment

Sounds interesting, though I prefer the titles Executive Downsizer, Liquidation Manager and Severance Administrator to Mercenary. Just personal preference, sounds more Corporate.

Thanks for the interest! I understand where you're coming from, I preferred the usage of the word "mercenary" as it was just simpler to me, but I'll think about changing it once the actual thread comes out.
this sounds very, very cool! evil mega-corporations are always a fun time

Thank you kindly!

L U M E N
[The Crown City]

Lumen is the world's premier megalopolis, a massive sprawl city with a population of 57.7 million and counting. Founded in the year T000, Lumen has grown to become the world's single largest population center.

It began with the discovery of the next island of stability by Dr. Richard Exion. Dr. Exion was able to discover a massive body of a superheavy element, later termed exionium, located underground where Lumen would soon be founded. Dr. Exion hypothesized that the fission of even small amounts of this element would generate massive amounts of power, easily enough to power a whole city. The massive amount that Dr. Exion had discovered would be a tremendous power source unlike the world had ever seen. Dr. Exion managed to painstakingly obtain government grants and began the process of obtaining the gigantic element source and using it. After years of research, mining, and construction, in the latter years of Dr. Exion's lifetime, the project was complete. The titanic exionium load had been hooked up to a massive reactor plant and, as Dr. Exion had predicted, was able to produce never-before-seen levels of power. Dr. Exion, his life goal complete, passed away just as the city of Lumen began to sprout up around the reactor building, named the Beacon of Humanity.

As Lumen grew around the reactor, scientists working for the Exion Research Laboratory began to apply the Beacon's power for the benefit of the people. As power became a seemingly limitless resource, Lumen began a near-utopia as poverty, drought, and hunger stooped to record-low levels in humankind's history. The Beacon became a symbol of progress as a collective species as people from around the world flocked to Lumen. They found a place where equality was prevalent, life was easy, and new developments by the lab made possible the idea of resurrection. It seemed as though humanity has finally reached a pinnacle.

The Reactor Wars would change that.

Beginning in T-137, the Reactor War lasted on-and-off for a grueling 64 years as foreign powers launched attacks on the independent society of Lumen, seeking to assume control over the Reactor. Lumen, a neutral, sovereign city-state, was entirely unprepared for war and suffered heavy losses as several foreign nations invaded and waged all-out war through the city- most notably, the North American Federation and the Grand Texan Republic, though several other foreign nations were involved in the constant skirmishes. After 64 years of enemy occupation, the intruders were dispelled and Lumen was re-fortified, and once again declared fully independent. However, by the end of the Reactor Wars, Lumen had become a changed place.

The Corps had taken over.

What was once an entirely democratic, respectable, and fair system of governance in Lumen that distributed the resource of power equally to every citizen was now a cold war for the Beacon's power between a group of powerful corporations that had helped fend off the intruders during the Reactor Wars. These Corporations, because of their immense wealth and influence, proved dominant in every aspect of society. What was once a utopia was now a dystopia, as the Corps took the power from the Beacon and distributed it among themselves more greatly and among the other citizens unequally.

The only threat for the Corps are each other, and that's where the idea of Mercs come in. Paid mercenaries working for a Corp that helped undermine the other Corps in an effort to sabotage each other. Waging all-out war in the city would only lead to another Reactor War, but hiring Mercenaries to subtly destroy each other? It was pure genius. Mercs working for a Corp were gifted with resurrection, a rare process drawn from the Beacon's power reserved only for the higher-ups in a Corporation.

It is currently the year T-301, the hundredth anniversary of the end of the Reactor Wars. Several recent Lumen-wide power outages have concerned some that the Beacon of Humanity is beginning to see its final days. The Corps, however, continue their campaigns to undermine each other, hoping to gain a greater and greater share of Beacon power. In the coming days, though, it is becoming more and more apparent to everybody that some other power is rising, and a dangerous one indeed.

The Era of Big Business is surely not one to be taken lightly.

Hey y'all! Thanks for reading all the way down here! If you're interested, do tell! Once I get enough interest, I'll drop more world-specific info in the main thread so characters can start rolling.
