Drake's posture took a more relaxed turn as he noticed Sadie had begun to feel better about the situation. Truthfully it wasn't worth getting riled up over the opinion of someone he did not even know, but for her to face such scrutiny was something he wouldn't abide by. Sadie had only made a small mistake, something everyone was guilty of at some point in their lives. He took a sip of his tea as the help continued assisting Sadie with her requests, prompting him to smile sweetly at them interacting. She seemed abuzz with bright joy now that the awkward scenario had come and gone. Seeing her pause mid-bite of her pastry was rather adorable to him. Despite all of her antics she simply had this picture perfect way of catching the light in a way that was magnificent. Truly he was blessed to be in her company.
The sound of footsteps quickly shook him from his borderline unattentive state as he noticed the man from earlier approach and introduce himself. Again? I sure hope I haven't met this person and simply forgotten. How terribly uncouth of me. He nodded in agreement, standing to meet the man and offering a firm handshake. He would sit back down shortly after as Alexander commented on the previous altercation and how she should be recognized for her high standing. "You sir, have a keen eye. She certainly is worthy of all the praise in my honest opinion. Thankfully the whole foobar is behind us and it seems they are minding their own for now." His tone was somewhat hushed, no wanting to call their attention once more as they continued the conversation.
He took a look towards the table he strolled from and began to piece together who this couple was, if only vaguely. He recalled a few names showing up in some guest lists of posh events he had been a part of. The Deacons. He wasn't entirely sure about who they were and what their standing was in terms of etiquette but so far the Alexander gentleman had provene to be rather personable. He motioned towards the woman and looked up towards Alexander. "I apologize if my earlier outburst seemed bold to either of you. I wished to speak my mind but shall refrain from being outright belligerent. Is Mrs. Deacon doing well?" He asked with an equally platonic expression adorning his face. As he began to ask, he couldn't help but notice Sadie's gaze and subsequent excitement at the newest guest to enter the gardens. A well-dressed woman he believed to also be of Varian nobility. He took note of the rather large and prominent man she was with, and wondered if that was the Count Sebastian he had heard of. His eyes remained locked with Alexander's, but his mind buzzed every so slightly with questions.
It would seem this event is going to be a rather large gathering after all.
Attire:Coat/Shirt, Pants, and Shoes Time: Morning of 23rd Location: Edwards Estate -> Castle Gardees Mentions: Sadie, @Potter Alexander, and Lianna @FunnyGuy
Drake had enjoyed his rather nice tea, taking small sips as he observed the gardens around him. He couldn't help but notice the eyeing gaze of the Deacons who had previously greeted, and wondered if perhaps they were looking to interact with him. Nonetheless he would give them some space for now, as it would be rude to simply rush them first thing. Not to mention, he had a very important guest he was still waiting to entertain. He smiled and thought wholeheartedly about her once again, thinking back to their little meeting. Almost on cue, Sadie then appeared in the gardens and his head swiveled almost too quickly as he heard the voices of her and her entourage. Like something out of a movie he noticed her ensemble and the way she carried herself. What a work of art that woman is.
The cinematic experience took a turn however as she tripped on the carelessly laid out dress of some random woman. Drake hadn't the faintest idea who she even was, but the overall tone as the table scorned her prompted his fingers to clasp together for a moment, holding back an immediate remark. He stood up and moved a chair out for Sadie as she dejectedly approached. His hand reached into his breast pocket, pulling out a small handkerchief and handing it to her. "Of course, Princess Camilia. I'm always happy to have your company. Here have this to help wipe off any excess dirt." His gaze shifted to the table that laughed at his date, and he couldn't help it as they all seemed so pleased with themselves. Putting down a woman who had done them no wrong, shame on them. "I also would like to apologize. Some people seem to forget themselves around here and leave their overpriced, gaudy, and frankly poorly colored clothing out on the grass like animals. I sure hope everyone else knows to tuck their dress and coat-tails like proper ladies and gentlemen. But I suppose they'll let anyone into these events nowadays...."
His words weren't direct, but they may as well have been. He shot the table another look, daring them to say further after they had already been publically shushed once. Once the words were traded, he softened his expression and sat across from Sadie. He took a moment to hold her hand, the very intricate cloth surrounding her skin catching his eye. "I sure hope you have had a good morning aside from that little exchange. I'll do my best to make the rest of this event a good one for you, dear Princess. He took a moment to wave at a nearby butler who had a pot of tea ready to be served. "Miss Camilia, would you like some tea or perhaps a few pastries of some sort? I believe this right here is a chilled sweet tea but please if your palette requires anything else I am happy to retreive it for you." The butler eagerly awaited her request while Drake softly stroked the back of her palm with his thumb, simply lost in the look of this woman, but wouldn't hold on tightly should she wish to free her hand from his gentle grasp.
Drake had spent the rest of the 21st in his study before retiring to bed. He had alot to think about over the confrontation. How to protect his sister, not only from his family but from herself. She would likely do something else to upset mother in their never-ending battle for who is right and who is wrong. Drake of course saw his sister as the more reasonable as the pair, but that did not stop Victoria Edwards from exacting any kind of tyrrannical parenting she was capable of onto her poor daughter. With a shot of brandy to calm his nerves, Drake made for his chambers and lay to rest for his day to come.
Drake, finding himself rather overwhelming with paperwork yet again only had time for a few key events throughout his day. Namely, the most exciting for him personally, was to see if the fruits of his letter would become anything worthwhile. To his delight, it would. Initially he had thought to meet her for brunch and tea, but on his walk towards his choice of cafe, he spotted Princess Camilia along the beach. It was there that he finally worked up the courage to speak to her, a move that Drake would likely never regret. The two shared a few wholesome and genuine moments between one another, talking about themselves and collecting seashells along the beach. Drake couldn't help but let his romantic lover boy side out around her, even if they had just met. There was simply something about her that captivated him on so many other levels, that some would label him an obsessed stalker or over-confident nitwit. But to her, he seemed to be a charming lord who she at the very least would give quite a bit of her attention. He made plans with her that very day to see her again at the tea party in the following day, and continued with his day with a significant amount of pep in his step.
This same energy would end up spilling over during a fateful meeting with a young farmhand by the name of Kazumin, who Drake knew very little of. Quite honestly, the entire debacle was rather unorthodox. Drake happened to walk by a nearby bakery where he spotted a blonde-haired young man staring longfully into the window. A display that showcased the finest treats and delicacies the store had to offer was there, with their special of the day being a pudding cup that is rumored to be "the sweetest in Sorian". Naturally, Drake felt the need to address the spectacle as onlookers began to stare at the cow-licked fellow. Through a brief conversation, Drake could tell this young man simply just wanted a taste of what could be the finest pudding he ever could have, and he was quite the pudding connisseur to boot. He told tales of many varieties, consistencies, flavors, and places where he could find such delectable treats. Drake, finding himself rather generous after his heartfelt time with Sadie, decided to spare the young man a tortuous fate of being unable to purchase such a divine treat and bought the man a few cups to share with himself and his dear friends.
Drake spent the rest of his day stuck in his study pouring over various documents, finding a few particularly odd ones that he singled out among the rest. For one, a trade ledger had made its way to the Edwards estate for some reason. After reviewing the document, it appeared someone from the guild had requested an audit to be looked over by someone of higher status than themself, and didn't want to bother King Edin or any of the young princes with the trouble. Drake looked over the various purchase and imports and saw little of note, but noticed that a rather large quantity of this particular ledger's deals were one of four major names. Drake found himself concerned with the rapidly growing monopolies these independant trading companies began to hold in this economy, and quickly transcribed a copy for later review before signing off on it. There was little he could do to voice his disapproval when all he currently was status-wise was a secretary.
After a long day's work, Drake retired to bed and could only wonder what his family had been up to...namely Ariella. He wagered she would be likely doing something a little reckless, and made sure the servants knew to wake him should any other frightening news arrive about her. He strictly told them to inform him first, then the Edwards. Whether that command would reach his parents or not, he had yet to know but he figured the worst that would happen is he'd be chewed out for it.
On the fine day fo the 23rd, Drake arose from bed with a long stretch and an ethusiastic yawn. He grabbed the paper neatly folded and placed onto his nightstand and reviewed the recent happenings. Nothing much caught his eye other than the strange drawing along the front. He found it distasteful, but with tabloids that was almost par for the course. He stood up, wandered to his wardrobe and began to pick out his outfit for the day. A brief look at the events and he already had it set in stone where he would be lurking. Firstly, the tea party in the gardens that Princess Sadie had invited him too would be a great start to his day. Secondly, the masquerade party was something he had been pining to attend. A night socializing and getting away from the usual hum-drum of the day's busy-work was something he could desperately use.
A quick carriage ride and Drake found himself standing at the entrance to the esteemed Castle Gardens. The day's weather simply was too good to pass up such an event. The blessed sound of strings plucked in the distance beckoned him inside the garden. He took a moment to close his eyes and simply take in the atmosphere, but before too long he began his paces into the seating area. He gazed up at the statues of the King and the various ancestors. For a moment he thought to himself If King Edin is nothing else, he at least knows how to make a regal setting. Something to set our noble minds at ease I assume. He hid a chuckle beneath a sligt smile and took note of who all had begun to enter. He noticed two particularly interesting individuals he barely recognized, Alexendar and Lianna Deacon he believed to be their names. They of course had quite the getups for such an occasion, and Drake would offer a courteous wave to the pair as he wandered to find his own area to sit in.
He took his seat at a table with a few chairs and decided to make himself at home, fetching himself a pot of tea beforehand with a few biscuits laid out near the chocolate fountain. The instruments continued to serenade Drake while he took small sips of his tea. It was a decadent lemon tea that held a refreshing taste to it. The tea was hot, just as he liked it, and he continued eyeing up those who would approach and offer a friendly greeting their way. He made no moves to turn anyone away but certainly didn't move from his graceful spot for the time being, soaking in the ambience and properly enjoying this organized and well-thought out gathering.
Farim had a rather eventful day on the 22nd. In the early morning, he ended up meeting with his cousin Layla and spent a good portion of the first part of his day shopping with her. He made sure she had plenty of good clothes and accessories for her to enjoy as she began to show genuine interest in potential suitors. Farim couldn't help but chuckle at the prospect of someone getting to know his spicy cousin and her ... interesting antics. Whomever she had plans for, they were certainly in for quite a ride.
Not too soon after Layla and Farim split off, Farim had found Anastasia waiting for him at his chambers, tapping her foot in a jokingly impatient manner as she huffed about there being no newspaper printed today. He was rather happy to see her here, however, and together they decided to take a trip around the city so that Annie could show off all the particular "cool" and "fun" spots to do things or hang out. The particularly important detail however, was she opted to show him around on horseback, a mode of transportation Farim is rather unfamiliar. Needless to say, his skills in handling horses was shown to be somewhat lacking, and he ended up sharing a seat with her as she brought him around town.
Having plans elsewhere, the Princess brought him to Callum's tavern to have a nice end to the evening, to which Farim appreciated. Anastasia galloped off on her horse to attend to someone else and Farim wandered inside to see the gentleman from the other day, Callum. He heartedly greeted the man and shared a few drinks with the young Prince. Callum was respectable from what he could tell, and Farim found his outlook on controversial topics to be unique. He certainly had his attention for the evening as the two shared many personal thoughts about politics, family dynamics, aspirations, and so on. Once the drinks caught up with him, he made sure Callum had a safe journey home, walking through the semi-crowded evening streets until they would go on their separate roads to their own adventures.
The following day, Farim awoke to see a neatly wrapped newspaper sitting in front of his door. He smiled and immediately began to pour over its contents. He chuckled at the very on brand compliment for himself and his cousin Munir. It would seem the lades do indeed love a little exotic spice in their life. This line of thought continued as Farim spotted the ad for the beach bonanza. He nodded in agreement with his own mind as an idea began to form. He turned to his wardrobe and looked through its contents to procure a particular swim suit he felt would definitely draw some eyes. A short yet slightly maniacal chuckle separated his lips as he changed into the not-so-appropriate clothing. He knew he had to make good impressions, but he could still have a little fun here and there while he had the chance. He slipped on some fancy woven flip-flops of his with a simple beige color and made his way to the nearest carriage by the stables for his trip to the beach.
As the driver pulled up and Farim stepped out into the bright sun, the first thing people would notice is his lack of headwear. Farim almost always kept something to cover his hair, almost out of force of habit at this point. But here at this place, with the rumored "lax" swimsuit attire that King Edin himself approved, Farim decided to go all out himself. He carried with himself a small bag with a simple lunch and a deep blue towel draped over his shoulder. His head scanned along the shoreline until he spotted a particular group of individuals he almost immediately recognized. He kicked off his footwear and reached down to grab them in his free hand before briskly walking over to the group.
The music filling the air filled his footsteps with an infectious rhythm. He couldn't help but shimmy along the sand as his toes sank between the grains. This atmosphere had a nostalgic feeling to it, something like springtime back home when the oppressive desert heat would yet be revealed to Alidasht. Approaching the Vikenas as well as a woman whom Farim had not yet met. He smiled at the trio and planted his feet, looking at each of them and noting their various attires.
"Well well well, some among you here look rather familiar. But all three of you are fine looking folks in your swimwear if I may say so. I rather enjoy Sir Lorenzo's bold choice of attire here. Lady Charlotte you are of course a gem to look at, with your well tailored dress. It really matches your body well. And to you third unknown mistress, it sure is nice to meet you. My name is Farim, and I must say your hair and dress are both quite gorgeous. If you all are wanting extra company, may I perhaps join you for a while? The sun is rather good today." Farim laid on his honeyed words while talking to the group, keeping himself ready to either join or move on should they request privacy.
Farim entered the Sultan's room as requested at the hour, finding Nahir likely to be sat there and his ever loving father present. A slight scowl had adorned his face, but this was not to Farim's surprise. Likely there was some inconsequential thing that Hafiz found distasteful and he would make it his mission to give Farim hell to pay for it. But for now his attention was reserved for someone far more important. He couldn't help but feel anxious at what the Sultan would have for him, and he took the chance to bow before him and take a seat next to his cousin.
"Your Radiance." He greeted.
Then the Sultan spoke of his pride for him. To hear this praise was a welcome change of pace. For a few moments it felt as if he was speaking with his uncle rather than the ruler of Alidasht. He made some firm points, to which Farim would nod in agreement. Hafiz's glare would be everpresent as the mention of a potential partner came up, and Farim couldn't help but think on what exactly entails an ideal partner for him. Sultan Raif made it abundantly clear that he couldn't just pick any person here for potential courting, but someone that would fit with his role as a potential world leader. He felt the notion to be a touch on the nose and pragmatic, but he still kept a postiive demeanor for the time being. Such a big choice could hardly be made in a day.
As the group spoke amongst one another, whatever it is they would share between one another, Farim would make sure to end the night with another bow followed by his usual cadence of respect and tactful words. "Your Radiance I shall not overlook such praise. I am deeply humbled by your words and will consider them deeply in the days to come. I hope I can do you and our family proud." He would ignore any remarks from his dad and proceed to walk out of the room once dismissed. If he were to pass by Nahir on the way outside the chambers, once they had gained some distance from the doors, he would give a much more casual and friendly grin her way before they parted to their rooms.
"For what it's worth. I appreciate how you handled yourself at dinner. As much as this whole 'race for the throne' is between us, I hope we can still remain close as a family regardless of outcome. If you were chosen I want you to know I would give you my support in any way I could." He turned to face Nahir and pulled the cloth turban constantly protecting his head off, showing the brown curly locks that would likely be still wet with product. He tucked the headpiece under his arm and looked at Nahir. "No matter what may happen, even if something violent like the dinner. Whatever you or Mayet or whomever may say I still consider you all family. Tisbah âala khayr (Good night) my cousin." He would pause for her to say or do whatever she may in response and then head into his chambers for the evening.
Once inside, Farim began to change into more comfortable clothing fitting for someone resting for the evening. His simple white cloth robes were smooth to the touch, expertly woven by one of the more finer artisans from back home. He made sure to stride over to Thara, petting her along her head and giving a single kiss along her beak. She would coo softly and ruffle her wings, clearly tired from the days activities. He put together an arrangement of hookah nearby, cleaning off his pipe, nozzle, and preparing a well-woven batch of herbs from his brother Dali. Tonight had been stressful, and for just a few moments Farim needed to take the edge off his stress and worries.
Farim sat in a chair and pulled the nozzle to his lips, pulling in a thick drag of smoke to start the night off strong. Immediately his vision blurred and he let out a slight cough. Inshallah, Dali, what did you put in this? He took a lighter puff to let the smoke and natural herbs work their magic. His mind drifted and he thought of how his day had gone. He admitted it was a rather chaotic start with his late evening arrival, and the morning left some to be desired after Layla's usual harsh judgement of the foreigners attempt at their cuisine. He began to giggle as her remembered her scowling face upon trying the various treats they had assembled. Heh heh. Dear cousin Layla you are so picky.
After that he had met back up with not only her, but Nahir and his new friend Anastasia as well. Not to mention Saiya and Dali had even arrived in the park. Truly Sorian park became Shehzadi park that day. Hehehe! Another fit of laughter escaped his lungs while reminiscing about the events leading up to the nights conclusions. He had met spent most of the day with Anastasia, and most of the evening with Ariella, two wonderfully kind people he had already started to enjoy the company of. Sadly there was some drama at the family dinner...But that is to be expected, no? He sighed and pulled another lungful of smoke into his body.
He began to think and hope that the Princess was safe, wherever she may be. He hoped Ariella's emergency had not been cause for such an alarm. He hoped that Charlotte girl would find the answers she was looking for, and that her father could hopefully escape the wrath and gaze of his vengeful father. A string of hopes and dreams rattled off in his head. All this just on the first day. I suppose I am glad to be here. If not to say I met some beautiful women and tried some lovely food~. His filter began to fade, being alone with his thoughts in this state was somewhat euphoric for Farim.
He would make sure to try and choose his partner wisely, he understood that much. But is it too much to ask for someone who loves me too? He thought to himself. Currently, the Princess had blown him away with his introduction to this fine capital, but there had been others who had made such a good impression. Some as potential allies or acquaintances, and some even as potential love interests. With his final drag he stood up and began to make preparations for bed. A final giggle coming from him as he thought promiscuously about the following morning. If I really do get to see her tomorrow then it would be another good day I am sure. Especially if she is coming straight to my room, hehehehe! He knew the notion was silly, and that it was merely a visit. But when one partakes in the wares of Dali Kadir, you forfeit every notion of tact and simply indulge in the now, something Farim rarely got to do.
After a moderate session of smoking and reflection, Farim disposed of the pipe water and used leaves into a nearby bucket. He placed it outside his door for a servant to come pick up later on in the evening or early morning. His eyes were slightly reddened from the rather potent arrangement his brother had made. He couldn't help but silently giggle to himself as he continued rattling possibilities of futures in his head. For once, he felt like he had many paths to choose, but he knew to watch himself as best he could. Because he knew there was always a certain someone watching his every move.
Bardulf took the various reactions in, and couldn't help but let out a slight sigh. He had only been here a week and was already causing problems. Even Rue's Pegasus seemed annoyed with him, and he had grown fond of the creature in the coming days. His gaze shifted downward for a few moments in reflection of the past few events. He did indeed let his emotions get the better of him, and frankly had no idea just how dangerous that would prove to be. Here, now more than ever, he would simply need to hide who he was. He had let a bit of his more savage side slip out, as he always had in the past, and yet again he was proven right that he would struggle to fit in no matter where he went. Yet his clouded mind seemed to settle as he felt the tight embrace of Rue. Even here in this imaginary world there seemed to be people willing to tolerate and protect him. This feeling of acceptance brought joy to his heart and his arms wrapped around Rue for a few moments while his head sunk into her shoulders.
His head tilted back up, and a slight level of dew rose in them to those who may be perceptive. He blinked away the oncoming tears and shook off his depressive self-depricating thoughts. His mind had a habit of breaking him down cruelly and letting that happen unabated could result in more trouble for his new friends. The realty of what was to come seeped into him and he would need to grin and bear any troubles that came his way. Any wayward emotions would need to be cast to the side, even if he became a husk devoid of anything human by the end of this journey. If it would keep his new "pack" safe, it was a small price to pay.
"I...am sorry. Won't happen again." His voice shook slightly but he finally returned to his more stoic posture and expressions, stepping back from the embrace and making sure to hide his face beneath his cowl with a few extra adjustments and fidgets. His neck turned to face his gaze to the new elf they had just met, who seemed bewildered with the events that occurred. "I can talk more of it when we are safe, but I think for now I need to....process some things.
"I don't think you would accept 'natural causes' to be an explanation of that?" He innocently suggested. "Also, maybe we should, uhm, move along before too many people come to look at what happened. All that magic might have made a lot of noise...." He nervously coughed at the end of his sentence and stepped to the side to let the others lead the way.
Some more inner reflection from Bardulf who tells himself to bottle his emotions up and to suppress the urge to further blame himself for his misuse of magic. He shares a tender hug with his friend Rue which brings him back from the doom-addled thoughts he had been thinking, and mellows himself out emotionally. He then suggests that the group moves along, and steps aside for them to lead the way.
As the two entered the carriage, Drake would knock twice on the wall behind him, signaling the driver to go. He let loose a quiet sigh and placed a hand on Ariellaâs knee. âI am sorry, Ari. The two of them quite literally ordered me to come find you. Before we make it back to the house, what have you done that may have gotten them riled up like this? Perhaps there is a way to circumvent the lecture this time.â
Ariella leaned against the back of the carriage, She held her hands together in her lap as she shrugged, âWho knows...maybe I got mud on the carpet again.â She let out a long sigh as her head tilted back against the carriage, â How embarrassing... Do you know that he may be the future sultan, and now heâll remember me as the girl whose brother took her home to get yelled at.âShe groaned and buried her face in her hands.
Drake felt a tinge of regret in the back of his mind. Perhaps he had been too rash. In his momentary lapse of judgment, he embarrassed his beloved sister. But the manâs reaction was not one of discomfort, rather it was one of either resolve or determination. As if he was trying to read Drakeâs intent and character from a brief glance. He was certainly an interesting individual.
â Future Sultan you say? Well, Iâm sure a man carrying such a title would have the patience and understanding that a world leader has. He definitely seemed more concerned with your safety than the fact that you were being rushed home.â Drake silently applauded his sisterâs taste in men, at least that one. â Aside from simply slinging mud, did you do anything in those woods? They say you were with a man. Was this the future sultan you were with or someone else?â
Ariella's eyes widened, â A man!?â she asked â In the woods? â she shook her head with an exaggerated movement. â No I was down at the Tavern with Farim and Princess Anastasiaâ
Drake could only raise an eyebrow. âBut you said earlier you tracked mud onto the carpetâŚWould that have been from the tavern?â His arms crossed as he let out a slight sigh.
Ariella took a deep breath â BecauseâŚI fell in the mud, getting in the carriage.â She looked at Drake, clearly a terrible liar.
Drake leaned in and couldnât help but smirk a little at his sisterâs adorable attempt at subterfuge. âAri. I know when you are fibbing. We donât have much time and if we are to try and curb our parents' wrath I think it best if we do it together and get some form of story together. I really am trying to help you, sister.â
Ari sighed heavily, â I was with Prince Callum. I had gone for some drinks and ran into him there and I had invited him to come see the little place in the woods and that was it. I came home an hour before Dinner and got changed for supper.â She looked at her brother, â Nothing happened if that is what they were worried about, I was just showing him the woods.â She said her face show just how nervous she was.
If his face would show anything, it would be utter shock at first. âPrinceâŚCallum? Like Danrose Callum? One of the three royal princes of our kingdom? First a future sultan then a potential king. Your tastes are certainly bold sisterâŚâ He realized heâd have his work cut out for him if he was going to watch over her in the way that he had done since she had come of age. âWe will address that later. For now, is there anything in those woods that would be cause for alarm? Maybe some weird art you drew or perhaps a diary of some sort that Mother would be livid to see?â Drake rattled off ideas, looking nervously out the window as their destination was not too far off.
Ari smiled awkwardly. â You make it sound like something scandalous that a prince would be interested in spending time with me.â she said crossing her arms, âPlus it's not like that, he was interested in seeing the woods I told him about at the prince's court. But no, I do not think that there was anything about here. Maybe a bunch of novels, various mythology books..romance novels.. different flowers, and Twiggs that I found around. â Except that was where she kept her book⌠â Why are they spying on me anyways, Iâve never done anything remotely wrong but enjoy nature and the woods. I could be going to strange parties and getting high off various plants but no... I'm just enjoying the outdoors... Why am I being questioned over it.â Her tone grew more annoyed.
All he could offer at the moment was a shrug and a confused glance. âYou know Mother. When she fixates, she truly does not let it go. Perhaps it was a string of occurrences that made her jump to conclusions. But whatever it is they found you must deny it. I think trying to say you were âjust enjoying the outdoorsâ would only spur them on further. But I like the approach of you simply showing Prince Danrose around the estate. Perhaps as part of the âtourâ he asked to see the more overgrown areas of our property. That might workâŚ.â The carriage turned a particular corner and Drake took another look out, as time seemed to be rapidly waning. A slight click of his tongue signaled his frustration that they couldnât discuss this further. âI know you are terrible at lying, but just convince yourself that you do not know what any twigs or flowers or roots or books or art or whatever it is they found. I will think of somethingâŚâ
He opened the carriage door and stepped down, offering her his hand to help her out. He walked side by side with her to the doorway and opened it for her, quickly yet softly closing the door behind them. The foyer they entered was rather well lit for this time of night, and the sight of a very angry-looking Victoria and bewildered Gideon Edwards would only further exemplify just how serious these two were about this âmeetingâ.
Ariella accepted his hand and moved out of the carriage, she stepped out onto the gravel as she felt a bit of nerves building up. She clearly was about to enter into a potential warzone, and something told her she wasnât going to leave unscathed.
She walked into the lobby, gripping her brother's arm for dear life before letting go. â Father⌠Mother Has someone died? They must have in order to embarrass me like that in front of an Alidasht royal,â she said in a snappy tone.
"About time you returned.â The duchess was seated in the foyer, a servant girl standing at her side wielding a giant lace fan. She waved the girl off as she rose up from her seat, her gold gown shimmering under the chandelier light with each movement. âWeâll all go to the drawing room.â Victoria said simply and coldly, dismissive of her daughterâs complaint.
As their mother made her way into the next room, Duke Gideon pushed off the wall and approached Ariella. He lightly touched her shoulder with a warm smile. âI am glad youâre alright dear⌠We have no intention of embarrassing you. I apologize sincerely.â His gaze slid to Drake questioningly, â...I hope you did not make a scene, son.â
Ariellaâs face softened with her father's touch. She wished so badly it was just them. Life would be much simpler. Let out a defeated sigh â No, Drake was ⌠Drake. It's just hard when youâre being summoned by your parents in a very stern tone while you're on a stroll with a potential suitor...Now the possible future sultan will just think of me as some puppy with her tail between her legs.â She groaned as she started to head towards the drawing room. Walking inside she took a seat across from her mother who still held a burning look at Ariella.
Drake sighed as he looked his father in the eyes. âIt was a matter of importance, so I treated it thusly. The man seemed rather respectable of the notion and I did my best to make the notion as vague as possible. I simply said there was a family emergency and left it at.â He began to walk towards the drawing room, stepping beside his father and ushering a whisper. âPlease tell me everything's okay. What in gods name did you all find that made you feel the need to meet this late?â
â We found various items in the woods where Ariella snuck off to that could imply that she has intentions of affiliating with the occult.â Duke Gideon got straight to the point, and addressed both of them instead of just Drake. âConsidering it was an outsider who saw Ariella go into the woods with that man, we are concerned about anything getting out or twisted as we know-â Gideon began, intending to express his unwavering belief in Ariella's innocence, but his wife interrupted, unable to contain herself.
"Oh please we donât know anything.â Victoria retorted dismissively. She had been sitting down at the table when the two had walked in. She turned her body to point a finger at Ariella, hazel eyes filled with fury, "Listen here, Ariella. You are lucky to be a part of this family. If you're going to be an Edwards, then you need to start acting like it. You are the daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Soralia. We are directly under the King and Queen. Do you know... Do you know how important we are? How important I am? You're an Edwards and you're going to start acting like one."
She rose up to her feet. âThat means no running in the woods with men and collecting chunks of hair or keeping insane diaries about plants. Oh. And.. It means wearing shoes. â
Duke Gideon sighed patiently, âLet me handle this, dear. Please, feel free to retire for the rest of the night and relax.â Victoria simply glared and folded her arms.
He turned his attention to his daughter and gently greeted her, âSweetheart. â Gideon gave her a moment to think before adding, âWe found your journals and trinkets in the woods. We also know you snuck off to the woods with someone today. We are concerned and would like you to tell us what these items are and who you snuck off with.â
Ariella stared in disbelief at her parents. Her mother's reaction was to be expected, however, it was still just as frustrating. Her father stepped in a little too late, Ariella's blood was already starting to boil. She took a long inhale of air as she let it out slowly trying to calm herself.
âThere is nothing to be concerned about, I promise.â she said, âI keep a small library there, I like to read. A person I briefly met at the tavern overheard me discussing some of my favorite authors and was interested in exchanging some books. I offered a tour around the building and showed him where my books were. The little items you found were just rocks and foliage I thought were pretty. I like drawing.â she shrugged â I don't understand why you are both freaking out. Yes, I was barefoot, the rocks are slippery and my heel would break. I didnât want to break the beautiful shoes you bought me, Mother.â
Ariella lied through her teeth, mainly to protect Callum. Although his name would likely make her mother shut up, she didnât want his name associated with her space. She needed to keep him as far away as she could from them even suspecting a thing.
âGoing off alone in the woods where no one can find you is dangerous, Ariella... I am uncomfortable with it. The Damien Estate was just attacked today and there are criminals in the city. â
Drake looked on as the three of them began to argue. He knew this was coming, but still felt a slight migraine creeping on the edge of his psyche. For now, his expression remained calm and calculating. He thought of ways to provide any leeway and leverage for his sister, but found very little. He was at least happy she was giving them the story that they talked about on the way in. But thatâs when an idea came into his mind. âSo the books and art pieces are a simple collection. Do we even know these items are occult related? What exactly was concerning the things you both found?â He wasnât sure what exactly they found, nor the nature of their concern, so perhaps prodding the situations carefully would give him an edge to help his sister.
â We donât know that, but some of them were strange. A book of plants, twigs with flower wrapped around it, human hair⌠It could look strange to some.â Gideon explained to Drake. âEven if it was innocentâŚâ He leaned in to whisper, âThe kingdom guards are paranoid about magic use... We have to be careful.â
âA library in the woods when thereâs a library in the city? Ridiculous.â Victoria scoffed, âPlus, what would a noble lady be doing in a library or with a book in the first place? Thereâs a reason those stuffy Damien girls and deranged Vikena girl all do not have any suitors. Girls who spend their time on looks instead of their nose stuck in a book are going to be the ones who win the game.â
Ariella rolled her eyes, â Wow a woman who enjoys educating her mind. Fancy that. â She scoffed, crossing her arms against her chest as she sat back in the chair, â Perhaps their more educated minds are simply settling for the first man that offers her attention.â she sighed heavily, â I understand it looks strange without any context behind the matter, but I just told you. I enjoy drawing, I was documenting the different types of plants I found around. Have you never seen a herbology book? It's used for medicine and cooking, teas⌠And again the twigs were just pretty things I found to decorate my little place. The human hair you say is just my own, it got stuck in some branches when I was looking at some plants. So I cut it off, just wasnât sure what to do with it. â She let out an exaggerated sigh â The two of you certainly could create the most interesting tales the way your minds wander.â
Ariella started to realize just how serious this situation was. With Callum having been at her place, and all the magic-infused items not to mention the book that she had left there. She was going to need to find a way to fix this, she wasnât going to let this kingdom's largest mouthpiece run around claiming all these tales. Perhaps a spell she could use. She would need to go there at night. She also would need to be more careful.
âFather,â she said turning her attention to him, her large eyes looking at him with sadness â I swear there was nothing going on, You cannot allow me to not enjoy what I enjoy, it will be torture.â she leaned forward. â Have I ever done anything to cause worry? I went to all my studies, I learned about all the latest fashions, I come home on time and put in the effort that mother insists. I just had dinner with the sultan and his family for crying out loud. My best friend is the daughter of the king and I have been nothing but good. Sometimes I like to just relax with my shoes off in the woods. Donât you do something you enjoy? Smoking cigars in your officeâŚenjoying a strong drink after a long day⌠this is just mine, Father.â she looked at him with a pleading expression â Please believe me, I would never do anything to insult you or your name. â she shot a dirty look at her mother â Even though I am constantly being reminded how much of a failure of a daughter I am to you â she turned her attention back to her father â I really am trying my best. I know I don't have any potential suitors yet, but the courting season has only just started. â xher face turned into a sad expression of defeat as she tried to lay on the innocent daughter act.
Drake did his best to hide the disapproval in his body language and soon his tone. This all seemed rather far fetched in his mind. Another excuse for his parents to be worried or frustrated with her. âWell I for one enjoy a learned woman myself. Makes for far more involved conversation. And to further attest for her she really was in the process of establishing relations with a rather personable man.â Drake chose to ignore the comments of the other women. His opinion of them was on the positive side, but that was because he didnât buy into any of the tabloids and gossip like his mother.
âAlso I canât remember the last time I used the public library. I prefer a private study as well. I believe I remember lending a botanist journal to Ariella the other day. So far I think this all might be one giant misconception, but feel free to digress.â His manner was calm, and the little white lie he sprinkled in there was hopefully one that his parents wouldnât catch on. His tone carried no hint of nervousness or worry, but he still took great care in observing their reactions as he and Ari wove their little tale together.
âAriella stop the melodramatics.â The Duchess finally declared with a sassy eyeroll. She was secretly interested in hearing more about the dinner with the sultan, but she wouldnât give Ariella that satisfaction. Sheâd wait on that. â...Youâll be just fine if you stop obsessing over writing about leaves in a book and sitting around in the woods while bugs crawl on your skirt.â Her gaze intensified. âYou need to let go of this sick hobby before you tarnish my reputationâŚâ
Angrily, she moved to the doorway, but couldnât resist turning around for one final remark, âDrake, Ariella, from this moment forward, weâre doing things the way I want them. No. more. woods.â With that, she left Gideon to deal with the two pests.
Gideon sighed. He moved to hug Ariella, rubbing her back comfortingly. âMy dear Ariella.â He began with a tone etched with warmth and reassurance. âIâm proud of you. Your intelligence and your passion makes me so proud. I understand you enjoy this pastime and your love for nature. I, too, find fascination in the like⌠I believe you and I believe you come forward every day with nothing with good intentions.â He let go and brushed hair from her eyes with a steady hand. âYour mother and I may have different opinions on how you should act and how you should behave, but I want you to know I trust your judgment. That is not why I asked you here. Youâre an adult capable of discerning right from wrong. I am here only with love.â He gave her a warm smile that gradually faded into a more serious expression.
âBut⌠I need you to remember that not everyone is as kind as you are, my little flower. You have to be careful with how they perceive you. I wonât ask you to abandon your passions, but I need you to exercise more caution and discretion, for the sake of our family and for the sake of your safety⌠Can you promise me that?â
Ariella's eyes narrowed in a serious expression. She looked at her father, discretion ⌠she was being cautious even now. However, her sanctuary was no longer a safe place and she would find a way to make it safe once again. It would be a shame if her mother and father simply forgot this conversation even happened. Her brother wouldnât dare say or do anything to put Ariella in a position but perhaps she also needed to be cautious there. Drake had his own agenda and was too much like their father.
â I promise,â she said plainly. She would put on an act, wear fancy outfits, and attend parties⌠but in her own time, she would start to learn, and learn more magic so no one could cage her again. She knew the perfect person to reach out too.
Drakeâs cold demeanor only seemed to be exasperated by his mother. He turned towards where she had left and began to start a retort, but ultimately found it fruitless. âBlanket statements and commands are unbecoming of you dear mother.â He spoke under his breath and sighed before turning to the other two.
There was something about the way Ariella spoke and acted towards their father that seemed off. He could tell she had something going in behind those innocent eyes. This truly felt like a game of subterfuge and deceit, as was the case with all noble families nowadays. He nudged back any suspicions he had for now and finally directly spoke to them both.
âWith all due respect. She is not 12, and neither are we. Weak rumors and whispers in the dark so not dismantle a family nor its titles. You and I both see to that daily.â He paused before lowering his voice and stepping beside him, merely a whisper coming from his lips. âThe more you alienate her, the sooner she will stop being your daughter and will simply be Ariella.â Stepping back, his body turned to look at his sister.
âWell my lovely evening has become a bit of a wash. Iâm sorry dear sister for all the trouble. If it means anything I doubt you were up to anything nefarious. For now I think I will retire to my study. The door is open if either of you wish to have further word.â With that he took long and slow strides across the tiled floor and the echoing clacks of his shoes grew fainter as he journeyed down the hall.
â Thank you, Drake⌠Your wisdom is beyond your years. However, when it comes to rumors of any occult or witchcraft, the King will not take them lightly. You must take this seriously, Drake. â Gideon said to his son before he left and then glanced back at his daughter, â Ariella⌠Will you be alright? I have some work I must attend to.â
Ariellas ears perked up as she looked over at her father â Oh yes, of course. I will likely retire to my room for the night. You mentioned the king ⌠does know any of this, was he the one that reported it?â she asked curiously â I just would hate if that were the case, to have such a silly misunderstanding affect the family like thatâ Truthfully she just wanted to know if she needed to give Callum a heads up.
â...It was not the King but one of his guards, the Edinâs Enforcers, did take notice.â
âWell, it won't be a problem again.â she said with a smile â Goodnight Father. â Ariella left the drawing room, she had a few letters to write and it seemed.
Time: Morning Location: Port Vanarosa Mentions: Ismael @Th3King0fChaos and Odds and Ends Shop @princess
320 amas, Red-hilted dagger, Leather armor, compass, fancy spyglass, and a cloak
Tanithil watched with interest while the human's shape seemed to turn, twist, and shimmer to meet the mental image Ismael had in mind. Much to his disappointment it was simply another form of human. His shorter black hair was a different touch and the scars along his face seemed to have faded. Did humans always have ears this big? He couldn't tell just what may be wonky immediately, but his best guess would be that his ears seemed about twice as big as they were before. He snorted a little and let Ismael eye up his image in the mirror.
"Don't think we really got much of a choice for ya considerin' that's the only one in town. Should be good enough if you choose an actual elven disguise, big guy." He turned and made sure all the amas were in order, sliding an extra 20 to the shopkeep with a serious expression. "Oh by the way. We were never here." With that he grabbed his two items, pat Ismael on the back, and began to walk with him out the door. "Seriously though. Either you become an elf or the hood should go back on on." He said with a hushed tone as they made their way out the door, letting Ismael decide which form to take.
With the shopping done Tanithil would guide Ismael from that particular stretch of town to a few back alley shortcuts he knew. "Normally I'd show you around but I'm still wary of some wandering eye catching us in public and crying wolf." Walking down the alleyway was rather quiet, not too much trouble would typically surface so long as you moved quick and fast. But today it seemed the two were not quick enough. A single figure stepped into the middle of the pathway Tanithil and Ismael began to walk. The normal casual posture Tanithil had stopped as he straightened his back and put a hand out in front of Ismael to stop any forward progress. A deafening silence seemed to fill the air as the man and Tanithil stared daggers into each other. Finally the man stepped out, revealing himself to be another dark elf who spoke in a slightly gruff voice.
"This is our town, scrub!"
Almost immediately another higher pitched voice rang out from behind them. "Yeah, beat it!"
Two more figures approached from the left and right, surrounding the pair on all sides. Each person stood about 10 feet away from Tanithil and Ismael in either direction. To their front, a dark elf man. Behind them, a small fairy with a nasty scar under his eye. To their left, another dark elf who seemed short yet packed with muscle. Finally, to their right was an orc who stood taller than everyone there.
"On second thought. Why don't ya empty ya pockets and come along real quiet like so we can use ya for some fun in the fighting pits, eh?"
The orc spoke up. "Doubt they'd make more than a dozen amas. The one elf's real scrawny. The other ones got a bit of meat on 'im but doesn't look like much."
The dark elf, presumably the head of this bunch, snapped at the orc. "I don't fuckin pay you to consult and analyze our prey, dip-stick! I pay you for muscle. Now go fucking crush those twerps!"
"Right on." The orc's voice bellowed as he began to approach the two.
Tanithil's hand stayed near Ismael, the other moving in an instant to conjure a shadow-tinted blunderbuss, prompting the thugs to stop their advance for a moment. "Woah there cowboys. I'm gonna need you all to slow your roll and realize who you're dealin' with. Lest you want a hole in each of your stomachs I think the best course of action would be to let us on through. I won't ask twice." He then pulled the hammer on his conjured gun and aimed it at the orc.
Farim wandered back towards the guest house, almost lost in thought over the proceedings of the night. His confrontation with Mayet, then the Sultanâs summons, Charlotte investigating the party from the other night. A lot seemed to be happening all at once that his mental energy simply seemed to be at an all time low. He let out a long sigh as he pulled his gaze from the stone road to the sight of Anastasia and another gentleman he believed to be called Lord Leo. But it seemed he caught the end of their conversation, being just out of earshot as he saw the man begin to head inside. He felt his lips curl into an almost involuntary smile while his attention moved to Anastasia. His walking pace sped up to a brisk stride before he stood behind her, not trying to be loud but not necessarily being super quiet either.
âWell well well if it isnât the star of my day. You certainly have a way of brightening up a rather sour evening, Princess. Have time in your busy day to talk to a friendly foreign noble?â He would chuckle and place his hands across his chest in a casual stance. âIf so, perhaps you would like to share how the rest of your day went after our fateful little meeting?â
Anastasiaâs eyes, a shade of amber, lit up with excitement as she twirled around to face her new friend. âFarim!â She closed the distance and enveloped him in a brief hug. âI was so hoping weâd get to talk. My day was okay after that I guess⌠I went home and got some sleep after what happened.â
The air in his lungs escaped as her arms wrapped around. He let out an audible âOof!â but quickly returned the hug. âI am glad we can be seeing each other again so soon! Thara mustâve been good company if you were giving her treats. She did not make a mess did she?â
âYes! She was such a good girl. Weâre totally best buds now.â She replied excitedly.
He smiled happily as he continued to hold the hug between them. âYes I rather do love that bird. Iâm glad she had been good company. I must say, you certainly missed quite a lot before your grand entrance.â He leaned back to look into her eyes with a bit of a bashful expression. âI may or may not have made one of my cousins mad enough to never want to speak to me againâŚâ
âReally?â She looked up and frowned, âWhat happened?â
He wanted to choose his next words carefully. Slander would get him nowhere and exaggeration would only make things worse. âThere was a disagreement at the table to say the least. My cousin was saying things I simply did not agree with so I stood up and said my piece. It resulted in a very unhappy Mayet storming out of the room and renouncing all ties with me.â He would sigh and shrug. âSeems like I still have much to learn in the ways of the diplomat.â
A look of disbelief flickered across Anastasia's face, her voice laced with shock, âOh gosh⌠How could she do that over one disagreement? ⌠Ah nevermind, I guess we know I kinda know how you feel today...â Anastasia took a moment to gather her thoughts, allowing empathy to guide her response. As she looked up at him, her gaze filled with genuine kindness, she offered words of reassurance. â I am sure you did a great job. Sometimes people just have miscommunications. You seem nice and well-spoken to me.â
Farim would smile and return the kind gaze that her eyes gave him. âThank you. You are just as talented. The room was rather dull until you came in. As Iâm sure you can guess the argument happened shortly before your arrival. But itâs good youâre here. Now I can say my day ended on a high note seeing you again.â He grinned and winked briefly at her as his body and mind began to settle. It really had been a taxing night yet somehow this woman he never met before just seemed to calm and settle his nerves without lifting a finger.
âYeah everyone seemed super tired and weird. â Anastasia admitted. His next comment did manage to pull a smile out of her and she gave him a wink back. âI wanna say that too buuuut my dayâs not over yet. Talking to you would be a fantastic way to end my day though.â She audibly groaned as her arms slipped off him, reminded of her next task. She threw her head back and glared at the sky as if it were the source of her problems, telling him, âAfter Iâm done here, I gotta go talk to mister party-host and ask him what the heck happened. â
Farimâs hands moved onto his hips as she pulled away, he secretly wished they could just sit there hugging warmly to fight against the slight evening chill. But he settled for this moment and felt his face tighten slightly at the mention of this party host. âWell truthfully I do need to see my Uncle and Hafiz within the hour. Likely about this dinner. As for the party hostâŚ.if theyâre bold enough to pull the stunts they did before they may try to do other things. Will you be okay going alone?â He had a gut feeling about such a thing. Late night meetings with morally gray people hardly ever go well.
âOh geez. Good luck with that⌠As for me, I hope so. Wulfric and Leo seemed worried about my safety and now you do too now. â A small amount of fear crossed her expression as she spoke, â I thought Iâd feel fine going to see him but now Iâm getting a little nervous since everyone else seems so spooked.. My brotherâs making me bring guards so I donât know if the guy will even let me talk to him honestly.â Anastasia then straightened her neck to look at him and smile, âBut I promised Callum. I wanna prove to him that I care and Iâm trying.â
So he hosts secret parties, potentially uses drugs on whoever attends unwillingly, wonât meet if guards are involved. Yeah this guy is bad news. But Anastasia says he is a friend, perhaps he is misunderstood? Either way. Caution is best. His thoughtful gaze would likely seem to look almost through her for a moment before he blinked himself back to reality. âI donât mean to alarm you. I just would like to help. Do you want a less conventional guard? I can always have Thara fly around again.â His tone was more calm, and suggested a more agreeable mood rather than one that outright disagreed with her questionable nightime excursion.
Her expression had mildly lit up for a brief moment. âOh, no thatâs okay. I donât want Thara to get lost or hurt. Iâll be fine... Whatâs the worst that could happen?â She shrugged and gave him an even bigger smile, her tone lighthearted as she assured him â Iâll just wear one of my cloaks so no one notices that Iâm a cute princess wandering the streets in the dark of the night.â
Her smile was quite infectious, prompting him to grin slightly at the sneaky adventures of Annie. âOh you are certainly a fun person, princess. But if you find yourself in trouble my door is always open.â He gestured towards the guest house and with a bit of a chuckle he spoke again. âI will be wanting to know if you are safe so, would you perhaps like toooo meet again tomorrow?â His voice teetered for a moment as a small bump of shyness hit his throat. He quickly staved it off and resumed his friendly expression.
âOf course!â Anastasia answered immediately and joyfully.
He clapped his hands together with a quick sharp breath annunciating his excitement. âAmazing! Where and when would you like go?â
Her eyes brightened and she closed the distance between them to take his hands, â Letâs go do whateverâs fun tomorrow night! Iâll come to your room tomorrow and we can look at the newspaper together!â She exclaimed excitedly.
âItâs a date then!â He slyly stated. He may be acting a bit bold but he also wanted to see how sheâd react to stating such a thing. âIâll make sure to be on the lookout for you then.â He glanced up for a moment at the moon rising in the night sky. He let out a slow breath before returning his eyes to look into hers. âI think it might be time for us to end our fateful meeting, sadly.â He didnât necessarily want to rush her, but keeping the Sultan waiting would be bad news.
Surprise had filled Anastasiaâs eyes. She had then felt a mixture of happiness and fear at the same time. After a slight hesitation, she smiled at him, â...Yeah! Letâs do it!â She responded happily. Anastasia held her hands together then nodded, âSure. Iâll see you tomorrow then, Farim. Stay safe!â
Farim noticed the slight pause, but her joyful smile simply wiped away his suspicions. As she went to say goodbye however, he reached out and gently held her hand, taking a few steps forward and giving her a strong yet caring embrace. âThe one who should be staying safe tonight is you, dear Annie. I will see you tomorrow. But until then, may the Sun Gods light your way.â He would hold the hug as long as sheâd want before letting her run off to wherever she needed to be. He couldnât help but worry, but he silently prayed to the Sun Gods to watch over her.
With the delivery of his letter gone off without much of a hitch, Drake had resumed his leisurely stroll through the city. There wasn't much to observe or think about as he made the steps across the smooth pathways. It was, for once, a rather calm evening for him, and he felt rather pleased with how things were going. Of course he had his anxieties over how Princess Camilia would take his letter, and wondered if perhaps the others present would get a peak at it. He gave himself a mild shrug, as a man who canât pronounce his feelings in front of an audience shouldnât be doing things like sending love letters. He continued his walking pace, daydreaming about what he could possibly have in store for himself tomorrow. A daydream that would come to a quick halt as he approached the front of his estate.
The most obvious thing would be Gideon and Victoria Edwards standing at the doorway, as if ready for his arrival. He wondered if he had forgotten something as their serious expressions seemed to dictate. Drake thought to himself for several moments as he slowly approached them, keeping his calm as best he could before addressing them. âMother. Father. I am glad to be so well received on my return home but it seems something is amiss. What is it that troubles you both tonight?â
"Yes, something is amiss, Drake," Victoria greeted him with a disdainful tone. The Duchess's gown shimmered under the chandelier as her eyes bore down at her son from the top of the staircase. She slowly descended, her every movement exuding an air of haughtiness and superiority. Eventually, she came to a stop before him, her flowery perfume overpowering the air.
"Unfortunately for you, you'll be going straight back out," she declared with a dismissive wave of her hand. With a grimace, she suddenly began straightening the collar of Drakeâs shirt.
âWhat your mother means to say,â The red-haired Duke of Sorian finally emerged from the side, he himself also adorned in the most luxurious of clothing. With a warm smile greeting Drake, he displayed a reassuring demeanor despite the concern lining his face. Placing a firm yet comforting hand on his son's shoulder, he spoke with an unwavering resolve."We need you to go back out tonight, my son... I apologize for the inconvenience. Rest assured, I can arrange for guards to accompany you, if necessary... However, there is a pressing matter involving your sister, Ariella, that requires our immediate attention." he explained calmly, âWe need you bring her home.â
"...I swear if sheâs barefoot in the woods againâŚâ Victoriaâs grumble could be heard behind them.
Drake took in the words calmly as he could but felt his motherâs blatant attitude to be a touch drastic for simply requesting an audience with his sister. He furrowed his brows as she adjusted his collar and made his own rudimentary adjustments after the fact. âWalks on the town are no inconvenience to me. The fresh night air does wonders for a stressed mind.â He made a motion for a nearby servant and calmly requested for him to bring a carriage around to the front of the house.
âLast I heard she was to attend the Alidasht dinner party with one of the Shehzade royalty. Surely this fuss isnât over one of her retreats into the woods?â His tone was slight disbelief mixed with curiosity as he wondered just what his parents, or most likely the Duchess herself, would be so animated about.
" Itâs exactly that, but worse.â Victoria told him, patting his collar down until it was perfect, "She was seen sneaking with a man into the woods and it wonât be long until rumors run amuck⌠Do you know how hard I work to make sure everyone thinks well of us? âŚItâs like she doesnât have any empathy for me.â She vented, clearly vexed over this. " Anyways, we were able to find out where sheâs been going and we had the area searched-â
âSome concerning items were found.â Gideon added curtly, âSome that could suggest she might be involved with the occult. We want to conversate and shut down these rumors as fast as possible for the sake of her wellbeing,â
" And especially mine.â
âRight, of course, my darling Victoria. We all care deeply for the stress this is causing you.â He took his wifeâs palm and kissed the back of her palm. She relaxed a little, though, she still yanked her hand away from him. âDrake, please bring her home as soon as possible.. Iâd send our staff but I fear she may resist them.â
âYes Mother I am sure this event is rather stressfu-Come again?â Drake stopped mid sentence after the mention of occult items. He rubbed his jawline with his fingers for a moment as he was truly perplexed by the notion. This must be a misunderstanding. But it is still best to just do as they want for now.
The carriage had begun to turn around the building, prompting Drake to talk once more to his parents. âI shall see to it. No need to send any guards after me. I have a very persuasive word and an even more persuasiveâŚmethod should I run into any trouble.â It wasnât really a secret that Drake kept a flintlock pistol on hand but he figured he should subtly allude to it for his fatherâs sake of mind. âPerhaps mother could use a glass of her finest champagne to ease the mind. And before you say something, dear Mother, no you are not suddenly growing crowâs feet and gray hairs.â He turned to walk out the door, holding it open with one hand as he turned to look at them once more. âAnything else before I take my leave?â
They both shook their heads, though Victoria did not seem happy about his suggestion and was glaring at him.
Sensing her distaste Drake decided to add. âOh, come now. It was merely a quip to try and lighten the mood. In all due seriousness I shall get her back shortly.â He walked to the carriage and shut the door, finally adjusting his collar back to his preferred position.
