JACK ELLIOTT
ROADSIDE BURGERS, BALTHAM
LUNCH BREAK

"Holy shit."

"What?" Jake Elliott turned to his co-worker, Shaun Grant, with a curious look. Both of them were on their lunch break at the local fast-food restaurant. It was nearby the thrift store, and they were tired of being in there. Jake was eating his fries while trying to see what the hell Shaun was watching this time. Hopefully, it wasn't something stupid. He wasn't able to see much, but he did saw the part where the officer opened fire on the woman. In an instant, Jack turned away while Shaun shut off his phone and placed it down on the table. It was when he said "holy shit" again.

"The fuck were you watching?!" Jake asked while throwing his fries away because he couldn't eat anymore after watching the video.

"Well, my friends shared me this link about a nearby shooting. I just... didn't realize it was that bad." Shaun responded. Then, he went to cover his mouth. "I think I'm gonna throw up. Excuse me."

Jake watched as his co-worker rushed towards the bathroom and then stared at the phone. His curiosity got the better of him when he took the phone and began to rewind the video. And once he got to a part that didn't look graphic, he resumed the video. Jake watched as the woman took a beating from a baton and then saw the officer reaching for his gun. That was when he paused the video and placed the phone back to its original spot. He didn't want to see someone getting shot again. But, that footage was bothering him a whole lot. Maybe it wasn't a big deal, he told himself.

After a few minutes, Shaun came out of the bathroom refreshed as he went to grab his phone from the table. He looked at Jake and said, "It's time to go back. You ready?"

"Yeah, let's go." Jake nodded and started making his way back to the thrift store.

In the historic downtown of Baltham, it was busy as usual for small business owners that managed to stand firm against the Zemreaft Mall and the major retailers. Even know it isn't as popular as the modern downtown, people manage to find themselves in this area. There was the well known Kennedy Square Park with its ironic bronze statue of a lion and lioness. Some of the tourists often visit the park to take pictures of the statue while visiting the old town of Baltham. And there was the classic Sweet Bay Hotel designed to look like it was built in the early 1900s despite being constructed in the early 1980s. There were many more landmarks and areas only known to the locals.

Next was the modern downtown filled with offices, technology companies, and commercial districts that rivaled any city on the West Coast. There was the recently opened boardwalk filled with businesses to make tourists spend their money. Despite the boardwalk being small, it was big enough to fit the tallest Ferris wheel on the West Coast called Revolution. Meanwhile, one of the ferries entered the terminal, filled with people from Seattle and nearby cities. Conner Farrell was one of the passengers on board, but he seemed to developed symptoms of food poisoning out of the blue.

He thought that it was weird since he didn't eat much, but he decided to go back home and see if anything changed. It got worse. A few minutes after leaving the ferry, he began to sweat uncontrollably while getting unbearable headaches. It got bad enough that he almost passed out while driving; however, he made it home. His wife, Mia Farrell, was smoking outside when she noticed her husband's car in the distance. She tossed her cigarette to the ground and made her way to the sidewalk to get a closer looker. That was when she noticed him and became extremely concerned.

Mia ran towards the car and saw her husband coughing up a storm. She tried to ask if he was alright but got no response other than a cough. So, she told him to let her park the car while he went inside. Conner understood that something was wrong with him and decided to take her offer. In the distance, neighbor Benjamin Dunnings watched the event unfolding and had thoughts of checking up with them. But, he was distracted by a phone call from his mother.

Fifteens later, a blood-curdling scream echoed across the neighborhood, and it came from the Dunnings household. Everyone, including Benjamin, was wondering what was going while some were calling for help. He realized that they could be in severe danger and raced for the house. It was easy to enter inside since the door was unlocked. He immediately noticed the blood on the wooden floor and had seconds thoughts. But, he blocked them for his mind and followed the blood trail to the living room, where it was a total mess. The table was broken while the couch was covered in blood. It was enough to make Benjamin leave until he heard chewing sounds coming from the kitchen.

He carefully walked into the kitchen and discovered Conner on the ground, eating... his dog. The sight alone was enough to make him throw up in the nearby trash bin. Once he was done throwing his guts up, Benjamin noticed that Conner was standing over the dead dog. He tried to say something but was speechless and scared for his life. Things got worse when Conner turned around to reveal his bloody mouth and started walking towards him. That was when Benjamin ran. He prayed that the authorities were waiting outside the house.

But before he grabbed the door handle, Benjamin heard someone coming down the stairs and turned to see that it was Mia. There was a massive bite mark on the right side of her head enough that the ear was missing. He didn't believe what Conner did to his wife and rushed towards her aid. "Oh, god! We need to get you help!"

Mia only responded with a growl.

Outside, an officer approached the house while another was talking to a neighbor until the door was open. Benjamin tried to say something while dragging towards the officers as Mia was biting down on his neck. The nearby officer ran towards them and tried to pull them apart. That caused her to turn her attention towards the officer and tackled him to the ground. Benjamin attempted to walk back home, but he collapsed in front of the neighbors. And then, Conner walked outside, made his way towards Benjamin, and started eating him. Everyone cried out in terror while some began filming the event with their cell phones.

The other officer ran towards his partner and started beating the woman with his baton. But it was ineffective. Instead, she tried to grab him and bite him; however, he quickly kicked her away. So, with no other choice, he pulled his pistol and took aim. He gave her a final warning, but she kept on walking towards him. And with that, he fired a single shot to the chest. Naturally, a shot to the chest was enough to stop everyone. But, something strange happened. Mia kept on moving towards him without any sign of pain or discomfort. So, he fired another shot and another until she finally dropped to the ground. Then, he fired at Conner until he also dropped dead. That caused most of the crowd to disperse.

The officer was visibility distraught by everything that he did and witnessed and froze in place. Fortunately, backup arrived. Two other officers approached the officer and tried to ask him questions, but he ran towards his dead partner and attempted to wake him up. One of the neighbors had been filming the whole time and decided to post the entire video on their Twitter account. In a matter of minutes, the video blew up and started to spread all over the website. Eventually, it got the media's attention, and they began covering the breaking news. And there was still enough time before lunch ended.

THE FLOWER PRINCE

Even though Xōchipilli was on his phone, he was still paying close attention to the door. For example, he made sure to wave back at Kore after she waved at him. But other than that time, he didn't interact with everyone else other than a glance. There was Zeus with some danishes, but all that did was made Xōchipilli cringed at his attempt. Then, Hera arrived, and her brief words to everyone was enough to make him roll his eyes. Suddenly, his phone notified him of a text message for one of the workers at the club.

hey. something's wrong with the booth again.

Oh great, Xōchipilli thought to himself while typing up a response.

Are you sure it isn't just the laptop?

Another text soon appeared a few seconds later.

i don't know. matt's taking a look at it. will keep you updated.

Xōchipilli took a moment to make a mental note about the booth. The next thing he noticed was his brother finally showing up. And then, he started to speak in their native tongue of Nahuatl, which caught Xōchipilli off guard. It had been a while since he last heard the language in person. He mainly talked in English and Spanish to act as human as possible. It took a few seconds before he was able to remember some words in Nahuatl.

"Yeah, you didn't miss anything. Other than whatever the Greeks did. I wasn't paying attention to them honestly." Xōchipilli chucked and then noticed his sister was sitting nearby. "Oh, hey there. How's the business doing?"

JACK ELLIOTT
TWENTY-NINE | PHOTOGRAPHER | CANCER
#8C5FA8 // GAVIN STENHOUSE

CHARACTERIZATION
In Colorado, Jake Elliott grew up in a lovely foster family after his mother lost her battle with cancer, and his father disappeared. Jack eventually felt like his adoptive family was his actual family. He was fairly popular in school and even made a few friends along the way. His love for photography earned him a place as a respected wedding photographer. And after getting his degree in photojournalism, he was hired by the Denver Post as their newspaper photographer.

But, it only lasted a few years before he decided to quit and moved to Washington. Jack grew tired of working on a deadline and wanted more freedom in his life. His friends and family supported his decision and the big move to Baltham. After settling into his new apartment, he found work as a simple clerk in a small thrift store in the historic downtown. As for his photography work, he got some job that he paid decently enough to save it. So far, however, life is going good.
