We can skip to the confrontation since you'll be MIA for a few weeks no prob. The king will be on horseback riding past the slums with his body guards when the riot starts. You're free to go from there and I'll have the king's response ready. He'll be fully armored.

Gotcha!

I'll try to get a post in before I leave, and then pick up where we left off when back (or skip to wherever needed at the time).
@armorplated

Yeah, my initial thought was Nadijah trying to snipe him from a rooftop while he was distracted by the mob, but then I started to reckon that he probably wears armour... In which case, she'd need to get close with her blades instead. In her mind, she'd sweep in, slice him up and leave. In reality it will probably turn into a confrontation and allow Product to introduce the king.

Of course, it'd be even better if they had explosives, but I doubt they can find them this fast. Doubt the actual stores in this sell bombs and bomb arrows like they're nothing, heh.

Also. Whoops, called her by the wrong name there. That was what I planned to call her at first before settling on Nadijah. Fixed!

Hopefully Product replies soon so I know what to do for my post.

Ans thanks! It's a Japan trip, this time around the countryside/mountain range, since I've been to the usual big cities so many times by now. Am excited.
@product Sorry for the late reply. So, hrm, I'm not really sure how to introduce the ambush, since I don't really know anything about the king and his entourage - even things that a scout would be able to tell Nadijah and co. in advance (or that might be common knowledge to some townspeople). Things such as does he arrive on foot, in a litter, on horseback, how many men does he have in tow, how much armour he wears or... well, anything really.

Is it alright if I just skip to Nadijah confronting the king, maybe? Maybe the mob has gotten him separated from his men, and that's when she strikes. If you're looking to introduce him, that also gives an opportunity for it without a crapton of NPCs buzzing around.

With that said, er, I have it in my status as well, but I'll basically be gone until the 22nd of July in a few days (will be doing my last posts this weekend). So that... might make things a bit more difficult. You are free to control Nadijah if you wish after I'm gone, or handwave anything needed. I don't want to halt the rp for three weeks with my trip.

We could also do the whole ambush thing as a flashback later on, if you'd prefer. Like--- all focus is given to the other group for now, and if the king meets them at any point, he does (since I'm pretty sure he won't be dying in the ambush, haha). And after I'm back we can show what happened in the attempted ambush.

I'm cool with whatever is easiest for everyone. Whatever is decided, I can post this weekend on my part.
Phew, a lot going on in the ic. Gonna post either today or tomorrow - probably tomorrow, might not get a chance today.

I think Telma and Nadijah will try to kill the king. It'll be a good way to introduce Rolo as a character.
O boy. Bring on the mayhem.

That... is actually really clever. Vertigo gets the truest expression of Nadijah's character and we get an opening-scenes look at the Big Bad.

Agreed. This isn't the way I expected this to go (was prepared to find an excuse for her so as to not railroad your plans), but hey, I'm not complaining. Really looking forward to what comes outta this. And dreading it, too. In the best way.

@Z2010Deadmeat Same as above, sad to see you go man, but I getcha. Godspeed, see you around!
No worries man, glad to have you back.

Would you prefer I find a way to get Nadijah in with the others by now, or did you have another plan for her and Telma you actually wanted to see through? I'm game with whichever.
Same as the others, been waiting for someone else to post a character or to get a bit more information about the rp itself. Specifics on the setting and so on.

I'm afraid I may have to bow out, though. I'm going to be gone for almost the entirety of next month, and at this rate creating a character would probably end up being a last minute thing. I don't wanna leave @Tenma Tendo hanging mid-rp either, since our characters were going to be related.

If this rp has kicked off when I'm back, I might jump in if allowed. Otherwise, good luck everyone and I'm sorry for the hassle, Tenma!

Durand Aviary
Night
Interacting with @ambra, @vietmyke

In retrospect, Rylan should have figured a man approaching stryx in the dead of the night was armed. The sword the other unsheated on him made his pitchfork look little more than a fork; the blade was night itself, pitch black and ominous as the torch's light danced upon its edge. On any other night, in any other place, Rylan would have backed away from the weapon with raised hands and a few choice words of surrender. But tonight he was not alone, and so he stood his ground.

Before he could question how the other thought his whisper a screech however, the stryx next to him seemed to have had enough. It reared as if preparing to strike at the fool, and in an instant Rylan knew just what to do.

As was fitting for a man of his status, he scurried away from the incoming carnage as fast as he could. He bore no ill will towards the dimwitted intruder, but neither was he willing to risk his life defending a man he did not know. If the other met his end by the stryx's beak, he had none to blame but himself. The idiot had just waltzed into the den of carnivorous beasts with naught to offer but words.

The screech the bird let our was inhumane, piercing through Rylan's skull like an arrow welded of thunder. The thiefling dropped his pitchfork in favour of covering both his ears - not that it made much of a difference now. His ears already rung.

Eyes cast on the ground and ears covered, he was both deaf and blind to the beating wings next to him. But he could feel the air that whipped against his side, and knew to dug even further away, closer to the ground. It did not occur to him to run away when he had the chance.

A moment later, it was already too late. A voice broke through the night, tiny as it was compared to the screech that had deafened him. He could make out an unknown word, but though it meant noting to him, it brought the stryx to calm. His claws dug into dirt instead of flesh, and the madly beating wings had come to a stop. In a confused daze, Rylan lowered his hands and looked up at his companion.

Greytail...?

It occurred to him that the stryx's tail was grey.

"... Oh. So that's your name."

Stupidly happy as knowing the stryx's name made him, Rylan could not linger on that realization for long. Another one followed soon after, striking him half-dead from startlement. The same voice that had halted Greytail in his tracks called out again, and Rylan realized what that entailed; just as he'd feared, they'd roused the Durands. They'd be lucky to survive with cut hands.

Rylan spun around to meet the approaching men, and was suddenly painfully aware of his own state of unarm. He contemplated snatching up the pitchfork that lay on his feet, but hesitated to add to his list of offenses. Perhaps, instead, he could talk his way out of this.

"My lords, good that you came!" he exclaimed, though he knew well that neither of the approaching youngsters was of noble blood. He stabbed a finger in the direction of the other intruder, entirely unflinching. "This crook was after your birds. I was merely---"

Before he could continue, the stranger's hood fell to his shoulders and a much more familiar voice mumbled out a nonchalant greeting. Colour drained from Rylan's face, and his pointed finger faltered. That was no bandit or thief - it was one Tristan Baske, the drunken fool he'd seen make a scene earlier that night. The Vagrant King. A noble. An entirely debauched noble, but weren't they all?

The revelation rendered whatever Rylan was about to say utterly meaningless. Whatever excuse the lordling cared to offer would be worth more than anything out a thief's mouth, and Rylan wasn't ignorant of that fact. It mattered not what either of their true intentions were tonight; a name always held more weight than the man behind it.

'Borrow', yeah, right.

Rylan took a few inconspicuous steps closer to Greytail, trying to use his large frame as a cover to edge away from the situation while the others were busy tending to the lord's lies. He knew it was a risky move; friendly as he was with the beast, he imagined the stryx would gut him in a second if his master so willed. But perhaps, perhaps the bird would have the heart not to give away his escape if not ordered to do so.

Ever so slowly, the scoundrel took step after step backwards, edging closer to the endless darkness that awaited him with open arms.
Hmm, wondering if I should post again, or wait for the others to go first. I might wait a bit and then throw in a quick post, just to avoid a super long one later on.

Between Angel startling her half to death and Spark walking around with so much light and noise, Eli is just d o n e with this dang town already.
A-ha! Yeah, that's what I thought, one of those strange pronunciations used solely for names. And yeah, the athlete is most likely the football player I mentioned, Reo Mochizuki.

Since ่‡ฃ means subject, not surprised it also meant slave, haha. But "top slave" sounds like even worse a meaning than "retainer of the summit"! But yeah, like she said, not everyone picks kanji for their meaning, or pay attention to what the kanji used for writing the name mean. For example, a friend of mine is called Minato (ๆธฏ which means harbour). I'm sure her parents didn't intend her to have meaningful future with harbours. With that said, some do pick based on the meaning, just like some of us here do. That's why compounds like ็พŽ (mi = beautiful) are common.

Also, she mentioned that it is spelled like ๅถบ"=pron. mine" and ่‡ฃ "=pron. shin", but could be read as "Matsumi" and pronounced "Reo/Leo", so I am confused like hell and don't even quite know what that means.

Haha, I can explain what she meant by this (somewhat). Basically, kanji have On- and Kun-readings. The former is usually known as the "Chinese" reading, while the latter is the "Japanese" one - but both are used in Japanese. Usually, though not always, you would use the kun-reading when the word appears alone without other kanji to make up a word with it. In compound words comprising of multiple kanji, you would often use the On reading.

Now, the kun pronounciation for ๅถบ is "mine". So if you were to use that word alone to mean summit/top/etc. that's how you would say it. As for "shin", since ่‡ฃ seems to be mostly used in compound words, particularly ones for ministers (that I know of, I'm sure there are uses for it alone, like the old way to say slave that she mentioned) it is often read as "shin". For example, in ๅคง่‡ฃ = prime minister.

I'm not sure where Reo/Leo comes from exactly - or other new, name-only ways to pronounce kanji, like the Raito example I gave - if I'm entirely honest. My guess is that those are very, very old and archaic ways to pronounce the kanji, dug up solely to have a unique way to pronounce it in a name. Since that is basically what you can do when picking kanji for a name - you can choose any possible pronunciation for it, no matter how little known. That's why it's impossible for Japanese people to know how to write each others' names upon hearing them, or infer any meaning. They can hazard a guess based on the most common kanji and meaning used for the name, but really, it could be written as anything, haha.

Japanese is fun.
