Ugh. The Amazing series had so much potential. So much squandered, destroyed potential. The first 10 minutes or so of ASM2 is some of the best Spider-Man action on film. Too bad the rest of the film exists.

I completely agree. Such a godawful mess.

I had notes with good things to say about your writing, but now a mysterious masked gentleman has stolen them from me and is flushing them down a toilet. A shame, really.

Who are you again?

Amazing basically had me sold once it did the whole “My one weakness! Small knives!” bit. Y’know, actually showing me the Spider-Man on the big screen that I grew up reading.

Garfield and Stone were great, but everything around them just didn't work for me.

Also, re: My last post, I've introduced AIM, but obviously anyone is free to use them.

Toby Maguire made for a good nerdy Peter Parker.

Andrew Garfield really didn't do it for me, but I think he made a better Spider-Man than he did a Peter Parker.

Tom Holland was actually still a teen when filming Homecoming and he does a good job with the character of both Peter & Spidey. What I didn't like about Homecoming is:
1) Peter looked like he could wipe the floor with Flash Thompson. What the hell?!
2) Spidey relied more on the suit than his actual powers. He became less Spider-Man and more Iron Man Jr.
3) The Vulture learns Spidey's identity. After reading Ultimate Spider-Man I'm so sick and tired of every other villain learning Spidey's identity!

Yeah I wasn’t a fan of them “modernizing” Flash from thuggish jock to antagonistic prep.

After reading 60 years worth of comics, I'm tired of seeing people so dumb they can't figure out the obvious identities right in front of them. Or, when they do figure it out, die or immediately suffer from amnesia.

Also, Tobey's Peter Parker wasn't as great as people like to make it out to be. Just saying.

But, yes. Like I said, ASM 2 is right with SM3 in near-trash material. Enjoyable to watch to a degree, maybe, but not any good, and the films that ruined their respective series.

I thought SM3 was good. But I last watched it when I was 7, and I refuse to taint my memory of it by watching it again.

For all the various high points and flaws of the Raimiverse, Amazing, and MCU versions of Spider-Man, none of them really come close to being the best Spidey film for me. Because there's one movie that, in my opinion, gets everything great about Spider-Man absolutely perfectly. The struggle of an awkward failure-to-launch dork starting to grow up and become a functional adult, the comfortable easy romance with the girl-next-door compared to pining for the free-spirited woman who's way out of your league and forces you to step up your game, the crazy fights with ridiculous bad guys, it hits all the right notes.

I'm talking of course, about the best Spider-Man movie ever made.....Scott Pilgrim vs The World.

Shame it happens to be based on a different comic.

I never particularly felt like Tobey was a solid Peter Parker either – Holland I feel has a good script and good direction for both roles, but I think Garfield gets more criticism than he honestly deserves given what we had experienced [on film] with Spider-Man up to that point. We actually saw a Queens accent, the mainstream personality of Spider-Man, and some other aspects that Homecoming basically owes for getting the boat going cinematically speaking. Amazing Spider-Man had the wit, energy, and cast the character needed. It’s just a shame the studios got greedy and Garfield pissed off the wrong people. In another universe, it’d be Garfield in the MCU without any of the stupid Iron Man sidekick bullshit.

And it's a damn shame.

I don't have notes with good things to say about your writing, but we can still claim that a mysterious masked gentleman has stolen them and is flushing them down a toilet.

Shame.

And, yes. Garfield was a good Peter, and Spidey.

Holland's also a good Peter, he nails the younger years personality and I hope they continue to nail it as they have Peter mature and enter college years. His Spidey isn't as good, for me at least, but that primarily comes down to the Iron Man-lite storyline. I'm all for the Iron Spider suit, but not only was it too soon, it was distracting from Peter's overall character.

'Tis a strange day when picking Spider-Man 2 as the best Spider-Man film is picking a hill to die on. Alas.

Eh, I think it made sense in the context of fighting Thanos.

Iron Spider is still ass and should die in a fire, but it made sense for the situation

I just really, really hate Maguire.

I'll just say it: I think the whole anti-Maguire sentiment is largely internet groupthink. Sure, it's rooted in some truth, but mostly it's just people parroting an idea they heard other people saying.

And with that controversial opinion, I'm going back to writing! (After one more episode of Brooklyn Nine-Nine...)

And, uh, I'll just be the guy whose favorite Spidey movie was the first Raimi one.

For quite a while, I was right there with you. And honestly, I wouldn't put up much of an argument against it to this day.
