What does this say 'bout you and I? Both have anime avatars and both have sigs that are a tad lewdish/from lewdish sources?

That we've transcended.

Or that we have good taste.

Probably that.

(i^2)2🐐 every time we inject modern politics into a world that contains entirely different histories from that of our own my suspension of disbelief goes out the window.

I mean I KNOW it's the easiest thing to do but if you're an RP that wants to make it Advanced, ya gotta explain why Necromancy is a bad thing or I'm not buyin' it. Even just having one god say so is good enough, but do make that effort when you want to establish politics and whatnot.

(i^2)2🐐 dark elves are not inherently evil; can we just have really hot tan babes that aren't going to die because their air is less fresh than a gallon of Febreeze?

(i^2)2🐐 I lose it every time someone uses a hot model for their character that obviously does NOT have their shit together. If you wanted a disturbing lack of blemishes cartoon and anime drawings are the way to go.

(i^2)2🐐 if you flood the 1x1's with different prompts because you couldn't be F U C K E D to put hider brackets around each of them, you're doing everything wrong. Everything.

(i^2)2🐐 if you tell me to write more than 3 paragraphs (or more than 15 sentences) for one line of dialogue, I will describe how poor Timmy dropped his lollipop on the road and how his mother was *THIS* close to euthanizing the little guy because his dad definitely did NOT have butterfingers when they were making him. I'll probably write something about our Lord and Savior Mr. Truck barreling in to end the god-awful monologues. Permanently.

While we're bitching about IC details;

There's a time and a place for edginess. In a Dark Fantasy setting, it can work. But the amount of times there's an anime high school setting and somebody tries to bring in a character who carries swords or knives, grew up on the streets in a gang and/or was abused as a kid.

We get it, you think that's cool and you want to be a snowflake. We're all laughing at you.

Edge is love, edge is life.

But... sometimes people just want to be a forever alone zombies.

Joking aside, I do have something to grief about. That would be the no small amount of distress I feel everytime I post anything on the guild and see that the text can't be justified no matter how much I'd want it be. Call it OCD, but the serrated edges of the right side of the page almost make my eyes bleed quite a lot of times.

I dunno if I live in a really depressing area or something, but I can't relate to characters with 100% happy, carefree backstories so I can make them edgy. I guess because that's more relatable personally. I even add some relatability to antagonists. Can't think of anyone I know who didn't have some childhood trauma of a various type, or who wasn't affected by things like addictions even if by extension of more distant family members. Struggling within themselves is common too.

I can, however, imagine times where it is inappropriate and certainly plenty of times where it's over the top or obnoxious. So "there's a time and a place" rings true.

@Mariana Collie

I'm not talking about realistic childhood trauma or gritty topics in a canon of the correct tone. I'm talking straight up "I was routinely raped when I was seven and killed my first man when I was ten" in the middle of an anime high school setting.

@Silver Carrot Yeah, I gotcha, I agree the amount, tone, and setting is important when even considering it. That would be over the top for me in nearly any RP lol.

Okay, the most mild of rants/critiques that I'm almost positive absolutely no one gives a damn about besides me. Because it's never brought up by anyone else. (at least in general) People seem to like the content regardless of presentation. But here's something that clearly defines a purely roleplaying thread related problem, that's easily fixable and perfect to mention in this thread.

Please, put effort in clearly and cohesively structuring your written post. You have all sorts of unique tools at your disposal that novels just don't have. Make it clear what they mean to you, when you're using them. Unless you want to confuse your reader unnecessarily. Using hiders, colors or anything else. The more obvious you can make what the purpose of including it is, the better.

I did this myself, I personally and often use italicizing to show a person's dialogue is in their head. But without making that clear, I confused my partner. Apparently, the coloring choice I used made it hard to even tell the difference. Simply because I didn't add a little clarification. So not blameless, but I really do wonder how many people even skim after they finish writing their posts.

What else do I mean? Just stuff you should be able to catch, if you read what you wrote, after you posted it. (Red text is used for highlighting examples.)

Stuff like this, when you're simply copying and pasting your work into the thread from
somewhere else and you clearly have an unnecessarily long cut between the lines that happens nowhere else, making it just distracting and jarring to look at.

Or...

"Tabbing for text, like a novel would..."

"But only sometimes."

"Which is just obnoxious for the eyes."

Being a couple examples that literally take seconds to correct and it really does make all the difference to show effort was made. So please, after you post something, double check it...

Also secondary critique. I'm sorry, it just personally bugged me to no end. Even as someone who just kind of sucks at using proper punctuation in my writing. The "-" and the "," aren't interchangeable things, or at least shouldn't be. The comma is used for separation, so certain sentences aren't confused like...

I love my parents, Kylie Minogue and Kermit the Frog.

I love my parents, Kylie Minogue, and Kermit the Frog.

It's not for dramatic pauses and you don't use "-" for random sentences. Because if you - did you'd have to stop- reading like counting 1,2 - 3. Seriously it's obnox- ious. (So is occasionally spacing out punctuation and then not doing it. Yes I did that on purpose. Consistency matters. I only often see it used for stammers or pauses in dialogue and it's probably for the best when used sparingly. Also, it makes it seem less like your punctuation is interchangeable, when you don't have stuff like :; or -, in the post. Typos that would be fixed with basic editing, just drive me up the wall.

Hopefully, everything I wrote happens to be cohesive...

@Mara The way the cookie crumbles sometimes. But it was made red on purpose, errors in school papers or otherwise were often done in red for a reason. #Colorchoicesmatter :P (Just for possible interest.)

"A result that suggests, say the study’s authors, that the red pens make “the concept of errors and poor performance more cognitively accessible.” "The volunteers were told to mark any errors in punctuation, spelling, grammar and word choice. Those wielding the red pen marked significantly more errors than their blue-pen peers."

Actually, you seem to be mistaking hyphens with em dashes there, are you not?

Hyphens (-) are used to join words but dashes (—) are indeed used for pauses —dramatic or not— in fact they are used for nigh full-stop pauses. And they certainly are valid in inter— interrupted sentences and stammering.

Most people just don't know how to type an em dash, and use the hyphen for everything. cutting them some slack in an non-professional environment doesn't seem too much for me. After all, decorating arcane keyboard shortcuts like Alt+1551 isn't something most people need to do.

Ultimately, em dashes aren't ruled the same rigid grammar as most other punctuation marks. More than anything else they are a stylistic choice. Pushing your style on others, or giving bad advice doesn't seem like a good thing to do to a community of writers.

Take a look at this: https://www.grammarly.com/blog/hyphens-and-dashes/

PS:

en dashes are weird. I don't like to use them, and don't even know how to type that. In any situation they could be useful, I think that a hyphen performes better.

@KoL I did say I suck at this. Perfectly fair to let the difference slide, it certainly is a bit needlessly complicated. (TIL Another way to make a dash.) But I was intentionally representing what someone else did with them. I actually do know what it is/use a hyphen for their correct purpose. So I might have unnecessarily jumbled my words to make that point. But I wasn't knocking people for using hyphens over dashes. But using commas and hyphens (which people use for dashes) interchangeably, which I think is a fair point.

Edit: You hold the Alt key on your keyboard. Use the number keypad (won't work with regular numbers.) on the right side of your keyboard, than type 0151 —

@Fabricant451 Still, it's still a color that often is used for error or serious bluntness. (If color is used at all. Some people just don't like color, as previously described by others in this thread. I just wanted a way to show examples without someone telling me I made mistakes that were intentional ones.)

Great worthy addition, that the emoticons at the bottom totally couldn't serve the same purpose. Maybe you could also read my reply saying, yeah actually I didn't do what they thought I did. But I still agree with what was said. Aside from the "Pushing your style on others, or giving bad advice doesn't seem like a good thing to do to a community of writers." which I could easily interpret as something else more negative, but I'm good with giving people benefit of the doubt. :D
