Don't get me wrong -- I do not have a major issue with color-coding text in RP posts. I mean, I am technically doing that in the RPs I'm doing with you two, Tundra and Gowi.

It's just that I do find it kinda troublesome if I have to do that for a really big post. If I'm going to color-code stuff, I will do that thoroughly -- not just the main character's dialogue and thoughts, but also the NPCs (usually using silver so they don't stand out too much), and even coding/designing entire layout of the post. I'm not much of an aesthetic trash like Tundra, but if I'm doing it I am a hopeless perfectionist who doesn't like half-assed work.
It's merely a whining from me, that's all.

Coming back to the main topic, I'm perfectly fine with doing that for aesthetic purpose, as long as the words are readable.
...Which, sadly I've lost count the number of times I feel like we can just forget about color-coding in IC because it hurts to read all the unreadable colored text.

Oh yes, I completely agree. God, you have no idea how many times I have dreaded doing color formatting when I have a 3k-worded post that is mostly dialogue. It's not only tedious as all fuck, but some posts I almost think it's not worth it. Almost. But, at the end of the day, as I said in my previous post, I am aesthetic trash by trade. As such, I endure the annoyance I often feel. It does end up being worth all of the stress from coding it once I see the finished product.

@Veradana Just request for the person to change the text color because you can't read it, or ask the Gm to. Any Gm requiring or allowing color coding should have a rule or practice in place so that colors being used are readable by all.

I mean they should just add colors that are readable in the first place. So this issue wouldn't exist, to begin with.

It's not hard for someone to look up proper codes. I wouldn't blame the features, I would blame the individuals laziness.

I hate it when people stop posting in a roleplay without saying anything about it. I don't know if that's just me though, but I always make an effort to let my partners and group roleplays know when I'm dropping out of something.

Same.

In general I dislike anyone who feels not the need to communicate to their fellow members or the GM. Communication is my number one rule.

Relating to the colors conversation; I don't use colored text (and I advise other people to stop using it) because I got tired of people pretty much only reading that, and skipping everything else.

Yes, I know it's a "me problem," and the result of lazy players... buuuuuut, I think it's better this way.

You do have a point there. I use colours anyway as an aesthetic choice. Also, whether someone reads every single piece of text you write or not is up to you, not the reader. It's the writers responsibility to write in a way that others would find entertaining, not the readers responsibility to read out of obligation. I'm sure you know this already. I myself try to live up to this philosophy but alas, I fall short more often than not. We can't always live up to our ideals unfortunately. I guess that's what it means to be human.

But honestly, if you're not going to read an entire post, and only respond to the parts you find "interesting"...why are you even roleplaying O_o You can't just pick and choose what parts of a reply you want to respond to and discount the parts you don't like. It's a collaborative effort, if you're not going to respond in such a way as to keep it that way, you might as well be solo-writing if you ask me...

("you" as in the "royal you"/generally speaking in respect of roleplayers as a whole, not singling "You" out specifically, since people seem to have a problem with taking that wording in a general way sometimes)

Yes. On a discussion point about the prevalence in the role-playing community of people skim reading. We are not talking about non-collaborative prose.

My point is that the responsibility goes both ways. Sort of like a "help me help you" type of deal. Sadly, obligation isn't enough at times.

Except the responsibility doesn’t go both ways. As a player you are obligated to read posts in that RP. If you skim read you are being flippant and being an indirect disruption to the process. You are obligated to read and if you do not read the chances you understand the story or actions within it are null. It is not a two-way street. It’s a collaborative artform where you are expected to participate in full regards to the role-play. Yes, is it nice if you find each other’s prose interesting and everyone is actively (creatively and passionately) engaged. But as a participant of a project it is never okay for you not to read especially if the player you are interacting with has a style you find boring or bad.

The insinuation that this is a two-way street, to me, is absolutely absurd.

As I have said before:

If you are in a role-play where you are not reading the posts in the IC… then you are frankly, a bad role-player. That’s the end of it, there’s no middle ground. If you are not aware of the events occurring from your co-writers and peers then you shouldn’t be in that role-play or perhaps in a role-play at all. Understanding concurrent events, actions, and dialogue/thoughts are central to writing with people – otherwise as someone said before: don’t bother and go write your own prose by yourself. Nothing frustrates me more than someone who skim-reads but to learn that a lot of people here have admitted to NOT READING THEIR WRITING PARTNERS MATERIAL is downright unacceptable and blatantly disgusting.

I completely agree with that methodology and I do not dispute it. Another point I was trying to make is that yes if one wants to collaborate effectively then yes one must abide by the rules and expectations of said methodology. But if one wished to make such a methodology more effective, it is prudent to adopt a philosophy that emphasizes both a growth mindset as well as an empathetic view towards the mentality of the reader/player. My reasoning lies in the belief that no matter how good one may be, there is always room for improvement.

On retrospect I should've made my point more clear in my original post. Sorry about the initial confusion.

I don’t compromise with people who refuse to go by simple role-playing courtesies and expectations. If you (royal you, init?) ain't reading shit you ain't in my projects and I won't join yours -- people like that don't deserve to be in the hobby and medium.

The only exception I have for skimming is when a post is made huge, like over 12 5 lined paragraphs, and it is roughly self serving. Meaning it is not relevant or a good well written read, notoriously. So it's to be expected from said player to write in a way that will make reading it with invested interest a folly.

Hypocrites are currently at the top of my list.

You know the ones I am talking about. They bitch people don't follow their rules when they GM but they won't follow anyone else's. They complain that people drop them or vanish but they do it all the time. Whine about partners never being there for them but god forbid you need them. They are ALL OVER THE DAMN PLACE!

Seriously? Yeah, talking to you ~points to the one in the center, third row~ Grow the hell up! Don't expect anyone to do anything you aren't willing to do yourself. Like post, reply, and not ghost. Stop whining and live up to the expectations you place on others!

I use khaki for coloring what my character says in advanced rps now. For me it isn't to bright or too dark, its not vivid so it draws all attention, but it highlights it enough to let the reader know my character is talking. If I quote others I leave it white and normally in a dialogue break.

"Kinda like this," I said to the readers of this post.

That usually works for me anyway. Not sure how many other people do it this way, but I find it makes thins a lot clearer and easier to read for at least myself and, hopefully, other people.
