I'll be honest. Some of my complaints outside of this thread has been me just nitpicking.

However.

I am amazed at how possible it is to ask for simple things, and then received complicated mumbo jumbo littered with issues. Address them is all I ask, but instead of having them fixed, what was given to me before is tossed out of the window and I receive what is essentially another version of the first still laden with issues.

Thankfully this doesn't apply to everyone. I don't claim to be the best roleplayer, but I just can't see how anyone manages to ignore the concept of simple and screw something up unless purely on accident.

I guess this issue isn't so much an a really prevalent annoyance, as it is... surprise, maybe, at finding it in the casual section where I most frequent (Could be in Advanced too, but I don't go there much). Or at the most, something that causes mild irritability; Guess I just wanted to throw it up here to see if anyone else agrees, or if I'm being too critical of people's writing style.

One thing I've noticed throughout various threads (Can't name any in particular, because plenty of people had done it, and this isn't so much a call-out post as it is just a way to see if I'm just being nit-picky), is a particular style of writing in which the writer has explained a situation in a really... boring manner, I guess you would call it? I'm no expert on english language terminology or rules, but I think it falls under the "Show, don't tell" rule. Instead of writing in an interesting way that their character is feeling scared, or shocked, or angry, they just state that and don't really elaborate on how that has then effected the expression of the character's face, their stance, their tone of voice, the atmosphere - stuff like that. Stuff that actually makes the writing interesting to read because the emotion has been described to make you believe it's happening, rather than just telling you it is and that's that. Not sure if I'm explaining it all that well, but hopefully you guys get the gist of what I'm saying.

I also got to thinking that I need to be more vigilant in making sure it doesn't happen in my own writing - looking back, I don't think I've written something that "lame" unless I've been struggling to write to meet a deadline or my creativity isn't working so well. But I could be entirely wrong, and I could have done it lots of times - rather be embarrassed by it over being called a hypocrite though. If I have done it, I'll be making damn sure it doesn't happen again, because I don't want people to be bored over my writing. (Could be happening regardless though lol).

So what do you guys think? Have you ever encountered this? Do you find it mildly annoying, or am I just being nit-picking? If you haven't noticed this particular thing, what is something that you've noticed other roleplayers do that annoys you? Thoughts would be welcome!

I think it's a matter of writing style and what kind of effort you put into making your words more... lively. In an RP post, I tend to just throw down what I'm imagining at a time, without any proofreading to consider the strength of descriptions and strong cohesion. Otherwise, I would proofread the post a minimum of six times (necessary for me to even begin to like my writing), and it would take far too long for me to get things done. So I may well be someone with the same problem.

I think it's acceptable and fairly frequent for casual. I simply use the words others write to form an image in my head of the events, so I usually just make someone's writing style work even if it is lacking in good details, structure, word choice (like mine? :p). Can't speak for the advanced forum.

I find it more annoying when people don't spellcheck or at least look over their post for fluidity issues before posting it. I've seen a lot of GMs that I respect in Casual have this issue. I guess that is why I think a lot of the section is the fast food equivalent of writing.

Writing style is something to fix over time. Spellcheck is literally a matter of looking at the red squiggly lines that pop up when using a remotely competent browser.

@Peridot I agree, I like to see immersion in writing that activates my brain with sensory information. It's important for both visualization and holding interest. However, I'm not sure it's something I'd expect or ask for in low casual or free. (Though I'd have a big smile if I saw players doing it.) Above casual maybe but only to a certain extent. Wouldn't ask players to have novelist tier skills.

That being said, there are times when it's okay to tell instead of show. When summarizing, moving time, avoiding repetition, and simply to avoid uber-description. There's moments it is appropriate to narrow in and describe in detail and others where you want to keep things moving. Sometimes these moments occur back to back with each other, even sentence to sentence. One sentence is full of evoking details, the next gets things moving and is brief. During these moments of moving along, it is possible to "tell" in an entertaining way.
