Raven Rivers

Did they win? Raven was uncertain at first, then as whoops of victory were heard from the NCR lines, the man crawled forward to where the Vertibird had left and the Brotherhood woman - Why was she silent? - was facing down NCR guns. That was strange; didn't the NCR and Brotherhood mend fences after the Courier set up The Regime? Either way, he waited for things to progress, not knowing what he could do to advance the situation without making things worse; he knew his luck.

Then he realized, and this realization prompted him to step forward, that this woman was seeking him out. So he lifted up his right hand and said, "Miss Sinclair; I'm Raven Rivers. What does the Brotherhood of Steel want with me and Albert here? Aren't we all enemies of the Big Guy in Vegas here, or is that why we've been called?"

He was not stupid, just traumatized, as he looked at Virgil and continued, "Virgil, right? Can you confirm this speculation as to why the Brotherhood is seeking me and Albert out? And if so, how exactly can I be useful? I'm a traumatized mess but Albert is one of the most competent people I'll ever meet."

A vision. A flash of that boy again; the son he could have had had he married a woman. The son there was a chance he could have had in Vegas; his time in Gommorah and the Gladiator Pits had plenty of encounters with the fairer sex. Why was it that almost anything reminded him of a hypothetical son? Did he really want children that badly?

The son I might never have or never meet. Andrew Rivers, were his thoughts. Am I self-centered or unfocused to keep thinking about him? There is a high chance he does not even exist.

"So," he continued, "You aren't hostile, right? Right?"

Alvin Davion

Alvin glared at Fuka, before saying, "We are not going to indulge our lowest proclivities on prisoners, Ex-Mistress. I have my lines."

As for his impression of Ulrik, good, he wasn't a pathological Davion-hater; still, a potential enemy who was also his superior, but not someone who was out to get him; not that Alvin wanted to keep being ignored. Either way, he faced the Commander again, not asking anything right now and instead taking him at his word. If he wanted the group to get along, they will. If he genuinely liked the group to succeed, then why not try one's best to make it accurate?

Nevertheless, he remarked as another minute ran out, "The Republic wanting people cleared out yet not telling us who they are - Worst case is that they might be a black ops division of the other Inner Sphere nations."

As he waited to be dismissed, Alvin Davion then remarked, "Or I could just be a pessimist."

The Fastest Gun in Uvera

"All right, I'll stay put," Ken said as he took yet another half-eaten fruit and threw it up in the air, turning it into healing spores that floated around the arena, rousing the unconscious back to full health and even curing any concussions or other head injuries they received. As half-eaten fruits, sticky burrs, or even clumps of dry weeds were now more common in the arena grounds, the young man decided to pick them up and play healer, not wandering too far off from his designated spot, but nevertheless finding enough to pick up, turn into healing spores, and let the wind carry them.

He then remarked to Takemura, "You know, for a slaving bastard, the Sand King can be a very affable fellow. Then again, that's probably why people tolerate him... Well, being a slaving asshole."

But Takemura didn't reply, and Ken could see that the Oni gladiator's expression was bored. So the young man decided not to annoy him and instead focused on trying to pass the time - Wait, was that a Cryptid?! Ken turned to Garrick's general direction and waved hi, shouting in Uveran, then Waltonian, "Honorable Scion of the Forest, you grace us with your presence! I am Bright Star in Uveran, while my Waltonian name is Ken Cooper - It is a very good omen to meet you!"

He then blinked and said, "Also, is that an Elf you're guarding? Is she okay? Does she need healing? She hasn't been enslaved, right? Mr. Cryptid, you wouldn't believe the barbarous customs of my fellow humans and other sapient beings here - Despite the advancements in technology and the numerous inventions that have occurred and been crafted over the past few decades, they still turn people into chattel!"

Then he remembered just what being from legend and myth the Cryptid before he resembled, but the young man decided not to broach the subject yet - That particular line will be said later when they know each other better.

Leonid

Leonid realized that what he had done was probably the right thing, but it was too soon, too quickly. Nevertheless, he said, "My boyfriend is Andrew Rivers, my squadmate. He's currently at the bathhouse; he does not know I am talking to you about the information he and I have been collecting from his mother - A Follower - and which I've supplemented with everything I can talk or charm out from visiting members of other companies. Yes, I will admit to paying for the alcohol needed to loosen their tounges. As for our list of contacts... I need to know for sure if you'd really protect them - If you just wouldn't hand them over yourself. As some of the Colonel's men keep saying, 'They're not Citizens and they hate us anyway'."

That sentiment was understandable, but short-sighted and hypocritical. They weren't Mojave natives either, after all.

He then looked at Ambassador Ben, tempted to trust yet at the same time wary. Then Leonid continued, "Sorry; sorry about that earlier accusation, just... I should have been more careful. We've tried to be careful for a year or more now but I just..."

I just gave way, because I was tired of hiding it, tired of secrecy. I thought I was safe. Now everything is screwed up and screwed over and - Leonid stopped himself, and instead tried to assess Ambassador Ben, trying to find out if there was reason to trust the man. He then said, "I suppose I messed up anything you've been planning or at least pondering, I suppose. And put you at risk, not just myself?"

He already knew the answer, he just needed to confirm.

Alvin Davion

The night terrors won't leave him; they might never leave him. Alvin Davion, Bastard of Argyle, was as bound by his memories as he had been bound by chain and collar. Those Draconis folk had been thorough in breaking him, to the point where even after his escape and brief return home, he still felt unclean, dirty, and averse to the touch of others, although he could still stand a well-intentioned pat and even a hug.

Not that anyone would give him one; they didn’t know him well enough. And quite frankly, they didn’t want to know him - The Davions were only better than the other houses in relative terms and had their own blood on their hands. He knew this.

Either way, he went through the motions of walking everywhere he was expressly permitted to go, sampling the local cuisine in the cafeteria, and trying to see if there were anyone else other than the Commander, whom it was rumored he should keep away from - With his luck, his very bad luck, there probably were.

Nakano Fuka

Fuka had never been to Rasalhague before. Its protectorate status had been far removed from the duties of her family, none of their resources were invested in the territory. It was some other part of the Combine's problem, a place to be ruled by some unknown governor that the Nakanos would never deal with. She knew the gist of course: the Combined Soldiery had bravely sought to civilize the barbarian Vikings, said Vikings resisted throughout the 23rd century. One of them assassinated the Coordinator in 3004 and then a whole bunch of them sided with the Lyrans during the most recent dust-up.

Now, due to politics Fuka did not particularly understand nor care to look into, Rasalhague was independent and being used as a buffer by two empires. To her that sounded like they were just going to get taken over during the next Succession War (assuming of course, that the Ronin didn't win) but hey, that was a problem for the Rasalites. It was a good thing that they were aware of the danger too, or else she'd be out of a job.

But there was no mission yet, no contract to fulfill. For the moment Fuka was just killing time, taking in the sights of the city. Anyone who happened to see her could tell that she was a native of Kurita space with her resplendent kimono and delicate features, but it was unlikely that anyone would peg her as a veteran. The most obvious of her tells were hidden away for the moment, swords and rifles in the cases strapped to her back and a pistol tucked away in a fold of her robe.

She wasn't trying to scare anyone off, but she certainly wasn't going to walk around unarmed.

It was coincidence after coincidence that led her to Alvin. She had jumped across the Inner Sphere, snatched up the first opportunity she could find to pilot again, and had only walked into the cafeteria out of the vaguest notion of getting something to chew on...and still there he was.

Fuka stared blankly at the dirty blond mop of hair for a moment, trying to calculate just how impossible the situation was. The exercise was quickly abandoned in favor of plopping down next to her old captive, the young samurai grinning at the sheer strangeness of it all.

"Well would you look at that! The slave's managed to stay free."

Alvin Davion

Alvin looked at her in shock and said, “Ex-Mistress.”

Then his eyes widened a little less as he said, “Good to know you stayed safe.”

He was surprised to know that he meant it. Either way, Alvin dared to ask, “How’s life been treating you? You seem to be in good health.”

Nakano Fuka

Ex-mistress? As far as Fuka was concerned, she would always be his better. The moment he had allowed her to slap the cuffs on him Alvin had signed away his dignity, even if he wasn't doing hard labor at the moment.

Her devil's grin only grew wider as she reached for a cigarette, giving her captive a look up and down. "Same to you. I'll admit, I expected you to get caught again."

The question of her health drew a shrug. "Doing as well as ever I suppose, just waiting for my new gig to start up."

Alvin Davion

Alvin was as good-looking as ever, although it was sheer willpower and a little vanity that kept him taking care of his appearance after what the Draconis soldiers - Not exclusively male - had… Best not to dwell on that. The point was, the young man had grown, become more athletic and well-toned and the softness of his face was more controlled. He was more appealing to women and a few men than ever if Fuka ever thought of him in those terms.

He then said, “I managed to get lucky and stow away on a JumpShip. Got back home, too.”

Only to realize no one did care, he thought before continuing, “I got paid and told to do whatever I wanted. So I went here and hoped to find a purpose in life.”

He would not state that he hadn’t found one yet.

Nakano Fuka

He was handsome enough to be sure, but Alvin's appearance rarely entered Fuka's mind. She saw him more as a curiosity than anything, at one point a danger but now broken down and rendered harmless. Like a feral raccoon that had gotten stuck in her garbage can, Fuka had picked the little slave up and housetrained him, only to turn him free. Now here he was coming back to her, his submissive nature driving him to show deference to his captor.

As was fair and right. Fuka took a drag on her cigarette, digging through another pocket of her kimono (every outfit she owned had them sewn into the inside lining, there was nothing more annoying than not having enough carrying capacity) before producing a personal set of chopsticks.

"Kind of them, I suppose. They didn't want you to stick around? Your uh, family, I mean."

She figured that he preferred not to have his connection to Davion blabbered about in an open cafeteria, in the same way, she didn't really want him to mention just how she had ended up in Rasalhague. They weren't secrets per se, but they also weren't necessarily to be casually dropped in conversation while DC troops were still milling about.

"You went through a lot to see them again."

An obvious statement said as a test. Fuka was curious to see how her prisoner responded, snagging a piece of what appeared to be herring with lingonberry jam from his plate.

Alvin Davion

Alvin nodded and said, “They didn’t want me, and escaping from your family was apparently my only notable achievement.”

He then followed up with, “You know, your own family at least thought of you fondly before… You know. I didn’t even have that privilege. But honestly, even though you had your own reasons, thank you anyway for the help.”

The young man then looked at her in the eye and said, “I know what you think of me. I should have killed myself before letting you take me to hell in this life; that much is true. But somehow I could not bring myself to hate you, if only because you didn’t touch me. That, and I can’t bring myself to try and ‘prove’ I’m stronger than I was before - I’m honest with myself enough to know that I might not be, despite my wishes.”

Alvin then sighed and finished with, “I guess I’m dying without being loved… Or having someone to love. Tempted to latch onto even the slightest bit of kindness, real or perceived. I know you think I’m pathetic, yet I can’t hate you - Your folk did a good job of…”

Of abusing me to submission.

For a brief moment, Alvin’s eyes flared with hatred, but this was suppressed and denied, fading away into resignation and acceptance.

Nakano Fuka

The morsel was pretty good, a bit oily for her taste but the tartness of the lingonberries mostly covered it up. As far as cafeteria slop went, Fuka placed it near the top of the pile.

"Apparently so."

She knew enough about Alvin to know that they had been at about equal experience when they first met, and that utter disaster would have done nothing to endear him to his family. Assuming he had explained how he had escaped, he couldn't even have claimed to free himself!

She snorted at the mention of her own 'escape', smoke curling from her nostrils like one of the mythical beasts Draconis had gotten its name from. Her family life had been fine, nowhere near abusive but not entirely loving either. Knowing her parents, they treated her leaving as more of a stain on their reputation than a reason to worry about her.

Fuka allowed their eyes to meet, letting the bastard explain his feelings. It gave her time for another drag.

"Not what I expected to hear." she admitted. "Thanks, I don't hate you either!"

She laughed, the sound almost musical in its mirth.

"But seriously, that's why you're out here? Looking for love?"

The question was asked out of genuine curiosity like it had been posed by a scientist trying to confirm her thesis. The way his eyes flashed with anger suggested that there was something stern within it, but as soon as it had appeared it went away.

The MPs really had kicked his ass well.

Alvin Davion

Alvin answered, “Looking for a parental figure. Too bad the commanding officer hates Davions. Well, guess I made a bad choice - Not the first time.”

Nakano Fuka

"Lots of people hate Davion, and there are plenty of reasons to do so. You guys turned a federated democracy into a hereditary position, showing the Sphere your hypocrisy while sneering at the Combine."

That came straight from the schoolbooks. Fuka didn't really care for the propaganda one way for the other, but as far as she knew it was a true statement.

"You-Davion I mean- like to talk about freedom and whatever, but you've still got lords like the rest of us. People don't like that sort of dishonesty."

She said it without any anger or malice, simply explaining things the way she saw them. Every House had people who hated it, that was how things worked when you split the Inner Sphere between warring states.

"All this to say, so what if he doesn't like you? People aren't going to like me either, but that's not my problem Just do your job and don't get blown up."

Alvin Davion

Alvin latched onto that last statement and said, “You know what? Maybe I will.”

He smiled a little and continued, “Maybe my behavior towards you isn’t because you’re above me, but because you’re unintentionally kind to me. Or I could just be hearing things. Either way, thank you.”
Andrew and Leonid

Before going to the Ambassador, Leonid had gone to find the quarry worker who had been evicted from his cottage and gave him a full 500 caps - Not NCR scrip, caps - from 2000 that his mother had given him as compensation for his loss. And that was what he first mentioned to the Ambassador when he said, "I gave the former occupant of this house half a thousand caps for his loss, in order to keep tales of... malfeasance from spreading. But that's not what I wanted to talk about."

He then jumped to the topic, "Colonel Denver Abernathy is a war criminal. I and my... boyfriend have been collecting information on him for the duration of our joint service in the NCR military and in the east of the Mojave, where oversight is even slighter than it is here he has been killing civilians, exacting disproportionate punishments for defiance, among which is the arbitrary arrest of anyone who speaks up and their illegal enslavement in the NCRCF, which has been turned into a de facto labor camp."

Leonid then took out, from his pocket, his private diary, which contained reports, dates, and numbers, as well as what personal details he could wrangle from Andrew's mother, her Follower contacts, and what he could charm out from visiting members of the other Companies. A weakness of his testimony is that he was merely relaying information given by others and had not seen the grand majority of the atrocities he spoke about himself. Nevertheless, the overwhelming amount of reports and stories - True stories - he provided should be enough to make Ambassador Ben take notice.

The young man continued, "It has gotten to the point where even the Followers are disenchanted with the NCR, and some of them are refusing to treat NCR soldiers, and still others are forming terrorist cells due to Denver - Colonel Abernathy's - alienating actions. If this continues, we are likely to get a legacy of discontent in the Mojave that will last for generations, and poison cooperation between us even after statehood, if it does come for this place. It may even come to the point where any slip in NCR control will lead to... discontent, prompting the NCR to spend more cash trying to keep the Mojave under control even after hypothetical statehood that it would make from it."

He looked at the Ambassador, not telling him about Andrew's plan despite the temptation to do so, and said, "I and Col. Abernathy have different ideas of what would be best for the NCR in the Mojave. Even if I could be brought around to the idea that his oppression was needed to keep the region together, his punishment would seal whatever positive benefits that oppression had for us. So please, Ambassador, help us."

Andrew and Leonid

Leonid saw this as an opportunity to make vital political connections; old habits died hard. As Ambassador Ben and his security detail met up with their squad on horseback, he made an assessment about the dignitary, that the man was a maverick who was prone to surprising people and making the most out of the surprise he caused. Perfect; and he, Andrew, and their squad would have the Ambassador and his folk all to themselves for at least a few good hours.

Assuming they were all not tired out by then. Either way, he could see that Andrew was impressed by the ambassador's moxy; good, Andrew deserved to know that not all of his superiors were assholes like Denver - A hard man making hard decisions? Even if an argument can be made for that, that man would not recognize that a really hard decision would be to lay down his life now that things were different. Preferably after a court-martial for war crimes.

Either way, the Ambassador seemed to be hardier than his entourage, many of whom were tiring of the saddle and the heat. All the while, he thought of something his boyfriend had said to him, during their eighteenth birthday; it had been in a... vulnerable moment, but he remembered it as clear as day.

Leonid, someone needs to bring together the NCR and the people of the Mojave, or we all fall to the Green or other crises. Denver was right about one thing, hard decisions and a strong will are needed to keep this Wasteland together. Which is why I've made a hard decision of my own.

The damning words had been whispered, I already told my mom this, but I plan to shoot Col. Abernathy - Denver - for the good of the NCR and the Mojave, to bind the two together and provide a foundation for reconciliation, to weave a story where he is to blame for everything bad the NCR did. How would that be the result of my actions? Because you will shoot me once I kill Denver, and take the credit for my death. That will give you the influence and power needed to shape the narrative our way, with me as the hero of the Mojave and you as the hero of the NCR. Don't worry, I already told Mom, told her it was my plan and not to blame you or I'll be sad.

Leonid had cried, then, embracing his boyfriend skin to skin, but unable to budge him from his plan... Unless he found a better way.

History progresses when people find a third option to a binary choice, he told himself. When people decide that they can't just have one thing or the other - They need both. Or all. Call it greed, call it pride, but if we don't stop seeking moral solutions to our problems and the maximum possible gain for as many groups as possible, then we cannot advance.

The young man, barely out of boyhood, thought, Mrs. Rivers does not want a dead son, killed by someone she loves as much as a son. I must find a way and Ambassador Ben... He might prove of use in finding that way. Patience, Leonid. If you want to save Andrew, you must have it. Your boyfriend is already hardening himself to make the decision to kill Denver. You must make your own hard decisions sometimes, albeit ones that demand only from yourself, not other people.

This line of thinking continued until the group reached the town of Sloan, where the tired-out squad finally stopped, prompted by the Ambassador's staff, but not the Ambassador himself. Good; as Andrew waited for the order to disperse and finally have a bath, Leonid would wait for an opportunity to approach the Ambassador in private, to introduce himself as "Leonid Tannhauser, son of the Secretary of Energy."

Having political connections that already existed and being a frequent letter-writer to his father, one of said connections, had its advantages.

Mission Two: Siege of Mischief Reef

PLA 'Foreign Volunteers' Division - 10/11/2022, 19:11 UTC+8

The ship's decks were lit on fire for one second, but the vessel vanished just before Callie can take her shot, with everyone who had been inside falling down to the sea for one second... two seconds... And on the third, Mei Yuanyuan's ship blinked back into existence again, but this time it was turned sideways, presenting a full broadside towards Qingshe's position, or where she had reckoned that was. At the same time, Qingshe herself might notice that a giant eagle made up of shadows was fleeing northwards, carrying on it everyone who had been part of Mei's crew except for Sohrab, who had vanished.

Either way, Mei's ship was firing once more, able to present a full bank of magical cannons at the decoys, hitting two of them in one volley and lighting them up into fireballs, even as she realized that Qingshe did outmatch her. If she stayed, especially now that she only had Sohrab, she'd lose, and one of the few things she hated enough to care to avoid was losing. So the female captain turned her ship around, presenting its rear to her foe as one last show of spite, then moved northwards to join the rest of her battalion, finally sending a signal to the PLA Navy and Air Force using a portable radio that had been belted on her waist.

"Mei Yuanyuan here, from the Chinese Foreign Volunteers Battalion," she spoke with a bit of sarcasm. "We were sent by High Command to save your asses. We're circling up north to join up with your ships; be ready."

She didn't add that she had been doing their jobs and attacking the supply ships they were supposed to be keeping out. In fact, if they didn't care enough to know that she was there to help them, and if no one informed them, then it'd only make them angrier to tell them they had been falling for, well, a diversion.

As for her crew, which were now flying towards that ASEAN diversion fleet, one can now see how many people Mei had been transporting; 35 folks, 5 - 15 which had a visible Noble Arm, all cramped together on a giant bird that seemed made of shadows, a bird conjured up by a dark-haired man whose curved sword materialized wisps of darkness that shaped themselves into a flock of smaller shadow birds.

Sorhab then reappeared, stabbing his sword through a spot just behind her, plunging it through a... Portal? Dangit, it seems that she had almost been outsmarted, she, Mei Yuanyuan, former Disabler!

Oh, well, such is life; there were advantages to the belief that nothing mattered anyway.

Municipality of Lingayen - 10/11/2022, 19:12 UTC+8

Myron visibly froze as visual data about that man was fed, and his next words were, "That's Anui-El, the Priest of Birds. He was part of the old 'Malikate''s last holdouts in Syria and Northern Iraq; when I was 18 and caught trying to infiltrate the last Malik's palace, the Malik gave him to me to be..."

Desecrated. That's the best you can say about what he did. But why should you say it? To get sympathy?, his own guilt spelled the words in his head. It'd be cheap if you got it. Besides, Sorhab rescued you before it got too bad, didn't it? Threw away his years of loyal service to the Malik and his position as second-in-command to save you -

Myron changed the subject and said, "And one of the people on that bird is Sorhab; he's the former second-in-command of the Malikate. He has been serving the Hammer of Masters since he was fourteen - Now he's twenty-six. His Noble Arm is a sword whose power is to render himself invisible and intangible, but he cannot physically interact with the world in that state so he has to deactivate it to attack others."

Then the Ex-Disabler added, "He can be kept out with Noble Arms or barriers made from Occult Programming Language, though..."

BRP Ramon Alcaraz - 10/11/2022, 19:13 UTC+8

Callie's portal had been stabbed with a sword, a middle eastern blade that would hold open the miniature portal her "Charter" had made, before a voice said, in English accented with a little Farsi, "The Malik's power functioned in much the same way. How strange that you have a Noble Arm similar, yet different, to what his' was?"

This voice, clearly male, echoed through the portal, "How strange that Myron is working with the daughter of his enemy..."

Unnamed Chinese Corvette - 10/11/2022, 19:13 UTC+8

Noel and Indra made quick work of the Chinese marines and officers inside the PLA Navy's Corvette; if Nico was there as well, the work would be even quicker, with the bridge being easily taken and hijacked. Then... The doors of the captain's cabin closed on their own, as the sprinklers turned on despite there being no fire, splashing the three with water. Then, several of the circuit boards snapped off on their own, and electricity sparked.

The pain would follow unless they had some countermeasure against it; some way to heal fast or just dampen the suffering.

What was the reason for this phenomenon? Well... Not even Myron would know, at least not now. All the while, Mei, Sohrab, and Anui-El were flying towards the diversion fleet, having abandoned the supply ships to Qingshe...
