Andreim

Andreim listened to every words uttered through Lise's mouth, making sure to memorize what she was saying. It was part of getting to know her better. She even acknowledged that he was capable. That also meant she was being perceptive, he was pleasantly surprised by that fact. He needed to be perceptive aswell, for both of their sakes.

"I am sure that modern clothes are easier to wear indeed, I'll take your word for it. I have never worn clothes similar to those kind you wear... or skirts for that matter."

After their talk about clothing, Lise had decided to take the lead and display her own powers. He had not seen them up close like this before. He knew about her power though, as he had done his research on the young lady. She was confident and slightly full of it though. Her powers were great, but compared to his own... he was certain she would fall abit short. Which was fitting as he was going to be protecting her, he wouldn't want her to do what Samoth had so arrogantly uttered before they entered.

He took this moment however to watch Lise carefully, memorizing her actions. Would someone attempt to deceive him later on he would know about it. Shapeshifters, mindleechers and overall illusionistic people were not uncommon to be around. Being able to tell what is real and what is not is a good thing. The shadows which Lise commanded were however a relief to him. That meant she was at least able to call on some help if the need arose.

"Lady Valois-Saint-Remy, I think the imps, like the wicked spawns they are fled before the voice of an angel. It is natural for the dark to part before the light, or as you have done, taken control of the dark to obey your command."

It was true, in more ways than one. She too had drawn him in. Like a sweet poison.

Andreim followed her still as they made their way forwards, clearing the rooms, he activated his thermal vision for a moment to peek around for any hostiles his normal sight could not detect. Feeling abit more comfortable in her presence, he was now being able to properly think and talk to some degree without having a loose tongue or making a fool of himself. Ahead of them both were the other four St.Laurel students waiting.

"There is at least half a beast there." His eyes darted to Cyan's tail as he gave a slight shrug with a somewhat amused smirk on his lips.

"I take it all went smoothly?" He addressed the four which had awaited their arrival.

Opportunity, We Are Here

How foolish to send a rescue party outnumbered by the people they were yet to save. Or perhaps the foolishness belonged to the one who'd tied their own hands to begin with. Still, it wasn't as if she could unleash all of her minions and expect it to be over within a few seconds. She'd need to test their powers.

"Grimoire, come to me." Clara muttered, an ornate black book appearing in her hand.

The Black Book was her blessing from the Gods. The thought that all gods were just and kind was wrong. They gave their blessings to humanity so that they might repel the Ancient Evil, but their reasons were not all the same. To give power is such a simple thing for them. And yet, this power was everything for the humans. The Black Book was curious, because it has the capacity for good or evil.

Subservience until death, even for the most powerful Demon if the ritual is performed correctly. However, the God of Death does not discriminate between human, demon, or otherwise. It can be unleashed on anyone, or anything.

"Yes... This will do." She decided.

This one was a relatively powerful familiar. A demonic tiger, fast, agile, and it packed a nasty surprise for close-range fighters. They shared a look, before it began to lope down the stairs. Clara turned and walked towards the next floor.

"Now, let's begin in earnest."

Rurik Alexeev

After they all teleported in, Rurik just sort of stared at Gilliam for a moment. That... that nose. After he spoke of splitting into two teams, Rurik averted his eyes. Yeah, that was probably for the best. His face looked strained, as if he was fighting something.

"Yep. Teams. Great," he said curtly, and in an unusually energetic moment, he grabbed Christine's arm and dragged her off into the next room.

Once there, he placed his hands on her shoulders, head held low and nearly doubled over as if in great pain. Suddenly he lifted his head, cheeks puffed out and face red. PFFFFFFFFFFFT! "Oh my gosh, did you see his face? I can't... I can't..." He seemed to be struggling to breathe. Finally he sucked in a deep breath. "If he asks, this conversation never happened." His expression immediately flipped back to serious and he let her go.

"Anyway, umm, I guess we should make ourselves look useful." He shrugged and did a lazy about-face, walking in a totally arbitrary direction. He found an old closet with a rickety accordion door. He slid it open and came face to face with an apparition with what looked like blood leaking out of it's eye sockets. "Splitting up was a mistake..." he said in a tense deadpan before slamming the door shut. Oh right -- haunted.

Cyan

TAGS: @6slyboy6@Crowvette@Bartimaeus@Inertia@Dezuel

"Come, Cyan. We're done here. Every room is clear." Samoth's voice came from behind Cyan causing him to blink, slightly startled.
"Oh, okay. Coming." He replied over his shoulder, then glanced back down at the picture frame he was holding. After another moment's thought, he took the faded photo out of the frame and stuck it into his pocket before leaving the room and following Samoth back to the lobby staircase.

When they returned, Cassius and Katherine were already relaxing with their backs against the wall.
"Woah, you guys are fast. And I thought we did good time," Cyan laughed and waved as he approached, "I'm guessing you didn't find anyone? We didn't either." The boy walked over and plopped down next to Cassius. Just as he sat, a nearby door suddenly smashed open and swung on its hinges. Scared of potential danger, Cyan immediately leapt back to his feet to find that it was just Liselotte and Andriem finishing up their section.

"I take it all went smoothly?" Andriem asked the group after smirking at the fox-tailed boy for whatever reason.
"We didn't find anyone," Cyan repeated his earlier statement in an attempt to be polite to the other boy, but his tail's irregular movements spelled out his suspicion of them.
"I guess since everyone's here, we're ready to move on?" he asked, backing towards the rail of the staircase in order to start heading up when confirmed. That was when he heard scratching and thumping sounds coming down the stairs. "Um, guys?"

Cyan started backing away from the staircase, with his eyes on alert and his tail stiff up against his right leg. That's when he spotted a large black beast with a sleek form and burning red eyes charging down the steps straight at him, and the boy vanished from sight.

Christine

Christine smiled and clapped her hands near her chest with joy when she heard that they were going to take on the people from St. Laurel. Finally! Some action! she thought to herself. She just hoped she wouldn't have to fight Katherine. That would just be boring since they had tested each other's powers many times before.

"Alright, leader! Teleport us there! I'm ready!" she said to Clara, enthusiasm fully coloring her voice.

Once they teleported, Christine, unlike Rurik, didn't notice Gilliam's funny nose. She was looking at her new surroundings instead, which was why she was confused when Rurik suddenly pulled her and brought her to another room. When Rurik laughed, she just blinked in confusion, before turning into a smile, thinking how cute Rurik was being, especially after he asked her to forget all about it right afterwards.

Oh Rurik...

When Rurik found the apparation, she came to the old closet and opened it again. This time, she immediately froze the appearing apparition with her power, not even the least disturbed by its appearance.

"That's one!" she said with a giggle to Rurik.

((Collab between Letter Bee, RoflsMazoy, and CavnderOHeart.))

Ascot was now decently clothed again, but not in his normal clothes or his St. Laurel's uniform. Rather, the sixteen-year-old was wearing a set of black jeans and boots, as well as a long-sleeved shirt and hooded cloak. A taser, grappling hook, and sleeping spray was at his belt, along with a smartphone and utility tools. Accompanying the young man as he rode the bus leading to the City Wall of Rhea were two students in hoods and cloaks, as well as Vernon; Ascot cannot conceal them directly with Narrative Role of Familiarity, but he didn't need to as the tourists in the bus accepted him as one of them, and by doing so, accepted those who accompanied him. The boy turned towards his boyfriend and the two other students; hopefully, all three knew of his plan; they would only have one chance as the wall, a great edifice of stone and concrete and magical materials, grew closer and closer...

A toothed grin hid behind Vernon's lipy smile he held out a hand and offered it to Willaim. ''Its a crowd and appaluse.'' In Vernon's filecabinet of a mind he had invisioned the tourists applauding them, as if it were a magic trick and the act was to give them all a razzel, dazzel. He had changed into black clothingminus the tee shirt which had a goth metal band's logo on it, and he lowered his hand. Part of what his father taught him; their fellas in the mafia would be ready to pick them up once everything had been cleared. Vernon smiled. "Such a lovely city isn't it?'' All the while he had been thinking, of luring the God or Goddess that gave hm his powers. 'Someday, I'll find you. Mister or Madam. They?'

++++

A smile as Ascot looked towards him. "It is a lovely city. A city that might have the answers we all seek." The bus stopped; it was as close as the group would get to the wall through legal means. Ascot, the two anonymous Mephistos' students, and Vernon would get down, and Ascot would go to the foot of one of the towers of the wall. Activating his Narrative Role of Familiarity field, the boy would make himself (and to a lesser extent, his accomplices) look like they had the proper clearances to get inside; the guards assumed they were from Rhean Intelligence.

This would be furthered by Ascot flashing an authentic-looking card given to him by his family. Normally, it would be useless for actual entry into classified areas, but with NRoF, it worked for now.

Ascot, gesturing to Vernon and Co. to stay close to him, would enter the Wall's watchtower while keeping up his field of narrative deception. He would then go to an elevator, and the group would be allowed inside. Said elevator, however, was small, almost claustrophobic, and furthermore had cameras inside. Nevertheless, Ascot felt like resting easily...

++++

Vernon had followed along, taking in what started to happen arround them, some of which interesting the rest familiar and done before. The clarences, the trickery, and the espioange had all been taught to him by shadowing his father. Vernon's father was a clairaudient so he knew his son would eventually need to know how to work around legal andsafe systems. Today Vernon had this as another real ordeal, the danger, the chance of death and exposure and the chance of being caught was all done before. So Vernon had a calm and cool, mind and he side stepped into the elevator he, smirked.

Lowering his head he clasped his hands together and had began to form a mock prayer, in which he took the role as a necromancer. It was to throw off the persons watching the cameras when shit hit the fan. "Oh Goddess Of Death, please help me guide the unrested and Near Death to the Realmsof the afterlife. As they have struggeled through life and are soon to be exempted from their suffering of this mortal coil.'' That last part was anothe code which Willaim understood as; Vernon casting their bodies in Ice/Snow to protect them. (And the unnamed Mephisto's students) To boot any magical sensory devices Vernon had actually invoked death evergy, which was a knack among The Family's true Necromancers.

+++++

As the elevator to the upper part of the watchtower opened, the four would encounter five people in body armor pointing tasers and net guns at them. Their commanding officer, known as such because of his chevrons on his shoulders, said: "That would be enough. You don't think there's anyone here without immunity to memory alteration? Now surrender, kids; you'd be lucky not to be in juveile detention for this."

Asccot frowned, and spoke back to the officer: "Sorry, but our business is important, just as important as yours'."

And then the two students accompanying him attacked. The first one, who had the build of a slender girl, threw grenades of light that exploded like flash-bangs, disorienting the guards with brightness and sound. The second one, a heavyset boy, transformed into smoke that carried Ascot and Vernon up, up to the watchtower's roof, where the latter used his Scream for MY power to paralyze the sentries keeping watch*. Once the two were safely on the watchtower roof, the smoke kid went to extract his compatriot from the fracas below, while Ascot began making sure that the guards were safely dosed with knockout gas in addition to being paralyzed.

Then, the boy would walk to the centre of the Watchtower Roof, and, after relying on Vernon to freeze over or otherwise disable any cameras or sensory devices, prepare to use Interrogate Area.

With a serene blue light, the spirit of the city walls appeared. An extension of the spirit of the city as a whole, but more focused on watching over its people. This incarnation was like a steel-gray statue, wreathed in laurels and heaped with crowns atop its head. Some of the crowns were rusted, victories which had long since been forgotten. And yet, there was still one shining above the rest as the victor above all.

"Speak, agent of stories," The spirit said. "What is it that you would ask of me?"

Ascot pursed his lips, still looking around. He would then ask: "I want to know the backstories, powers, and secrets - as far as you know them - of the most 'interesting' people in St. Laurels, Mephistos', and the Vigilantes. Can you provide them to me?"

Vernon and the two other students ought to provide him with the needed time to take in such a wealth of information. Ascot then followed up with his second question, even as he held out his smartphone to record the encounter, "Also, can you tell me of what you have known of Mephisto himself?"

"...You do not understand my essence, do you?" The spirit said with a smirk. "I am but a spirit of these stalwart walls. There is nothing a human could do to attract my 'interest'."

The spirit looked down at the old walls. They were once well maintained, but now the many battlements and weapons of war which lined it were old and rusting.

"We would not even manifest without your presence, even if one who would destroy me were to appear, all that would mean is the dissappearance of a being who barely existed in the first place." It continued. "Place a name to your desires. Then I will be able to answer to them."

"This man, Mephisto, did not come from the city of Rhea. He travelled here 2 decades ago. He treads carefully, but never wavers in his confidence. He shows pride in all things, but especially in his daughter. Even now in his cell, he laughs rather than languishing.

What would you desire from this man?"

Ascot said resolutely: "I desire to know if he is an enemy or a friend of Humanity as a whole, not just an enemy or friend of part of it. I also want to know the story of Vittorio Twinveil and Zachery Smith. And finally, I want to know if Alto Ganze has feelings for Clara Deimos Erdigan as well as if King really is an Alien and what his true powers are, if those are within your power. Oh, and I noticed one Andreim Volkazar eavesdropping on me once or twice. What's his' deal?"

"...I will say this only once, agent of stories. Humanity's story, and the story of humans are two very different things. Your family has long since watched over humanity's story, but it was their own stories which buried them in the end." It replied. "Do not burden yourself with more than you ought.

"Still, as a watcher I am only privvy to thoughts said to the world, and the man known as Mephisto keeps them hidden away like precious jewels. There is nothing he has done within the bounds of my vision that would make him an enemy of humanity. However, not all is within my sight, and there are things he would be able to do without my knowledge. But he is evil, that is for certain.

"He seeks the downtrodden and angry. The misfortunate, the evil, all so he can use them for his own ends. Vittorio Twinveil is one such example.

"The demon which had made him victim escaped this dimension soon after. He nursed a vendetta for Alto Ganze as he recovered from his wounds.

"Feelings are not my domain. If Clara Deimos Erdrigan means anything to Alto Ganze, it stays only within his thoughts.

"There are any number of things King could be. Since the day he appeared he has not changed in any way, shape or form. I cannot say whether he is all that he says he is.

"I also cannot say what reasons Andreim Volkazar would have for eavesdropping on you, but I imagine it has something to do with how different you are."

Ascot then paused; sirens were sounding; the guards were being missed, but he still had two minutes. Enough time for two things. "Two last questions! One, does Clara still have some good in her heart? Two, does Vittorio still yearn for friendship?!"

"Do not let your heart cloud your mind, agent of stories. I am a watcher only, I can only see what they have done. Vittorio Twinveil follows vengeance blindly, and Clara Deimos Erdrigan follows her father's shadow. Whether they will continue to do so is neither in my knowledge, nor is it my concern." The Spirit finished. It seems as if their time was nearing its end. "Some final advice, agent of stories. You were meant to be the watchers. Though you have been given the permission, do not assume writing history will be easy."

As the spirit faded into motes of light, Ascot sighed and wept. He then told Vernon: "Give the signal: We got what we came for."

Vernon nodded, and at a push of his smartphone's button, the two Mephistos' students who had followed him - two Mephistos' students who actually had a use for what Ascot learned- went to the top of the roof; the smoke one carrying the flash-bangs one. Then, a bright flash of light, and the four young people vanished.

But it was clear there would be no easy answers...

Unlike Rurik, Bak was not that tactful.

"PFFFFFFFFFHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!" She laughed. "Gilliam! Gilliam, I am sorry, but your facehehehehehe!" She clasped her hands over her mouth to try and muffle the sound. The St. Laural's kids were already here, after all, but him being so serious about it just made it funnier. It took a bit for her to get control of herself. "You should do that at party." She said, between a last few dying giggles. "We must find mirror. You must see."

"But first the mission." she said, suddenly remembering why they were here in the first place. She followed Gilliam as he snuffled down the hallway, looking around. Christine and Rurik had taken the opportunity to run out on them, and she couldn't honestly be sure whether they were searching the floor or canoodling somewhere private. Perhaps both? She'd seen such spooky haunted house rendezvouses in Rhean movies. It did not often end well for canoodling couple. Luckily for her there was an easy way to check where they were. "Switching to thermal vision mode."

The camera affixes right under her artillery guy blinked on and Bak's sight was instantly transformed into a series or blue hues. She swung around, clomping in a circle to get as much as she could. There was the bright red of Gilliam, a ways back there was a spot that was deeply cold that could be no one but Christine, and between them a lot of anomalous cold spots. She couldn't see any other living bodies from where she was, though. Perhaps if she walked around more.

AS she completed her turn she stopped, and urgently whispered "Gilliam, stop." Through the walls of the busted in apartment door they were about to pass she three small cold spots moving in unnatural ways, positioned around the door ready to pounce. "Three in room we are about to pass. Two hugging right side of doorway, one crawling on ceiling. Not ghosts, probably." she continued, slowly raising up her guns and pointing to where she could see each enemy. "I do not wish to be loud yet."

Kath was still strecthing her arms and legs when the second duo appered in the hallway: Samoth and Cyan. As they approached, Kath nod towards them, but didn't say anything and instead closed her eyes. Her skin was cooling off, and it was an ecstatic feel that she didn't want to ruin with some simple greetings. Even at the sight of Cyan's fluffy tail, Kath resisted the temptation to jump up and chase the guy until he'd let her cuddle it. Then samoth walked up to stairs, and eyed her for a few seconds. Kath peeked at him with one eye, eyeing him back.

"Why do you choose to waste so much energy on such insignificant beings? You're even persperating.."

Hah! The nerve on this guy! Kath's head turned towards Samoth, clearly not too happy to being accused of sweating after what was hardly a light training. "I thought you were a smart guy, but I guess I was wrong if you can't tell apart persperation and condensation." She flicked off some water from her elbow, launching it towards Samoth. "But I guess I can't blame you for it. You must be confused, 'cause this is the first time you saw a girl get wet." She smiled playfully, and put her index finger on her lips, letting out a sizzling sound. She was about to say something else when she spotted the other duo at the end of the hallway.

Andreim and Lise approached them in a slow pace, and Kath couldn't help but silence a laugh with both her hands as she saw them close in. Andreim walked behind Lise as if he was some sort of servant or pet, and he seemed like he was having problems even walking straight. She knew Lise had an effect on the poor guy, but this was just too much for her to bear without laughing. By the time Andreim reached them, clearly oblivious to her laughing, Kath's sides were hurting. She forced a semi-serious face, but a smirk still creeped up on her expression.

"I take it all went smoothly?"

Kath leaned forward, sending plenty of water droplets flying around her as they left her hair. Cyan replied to Andreim, and she forced a distressed look upon her as she quickly adressed him too. "Andreim dear, are you OK? You don't seem well. You look like you saw a ghost!" She broke out laughing, keeping her hands on her aching side as her joy quickly turned into coughing. So worth it, she wiped away a tear as she stood up shaking her head. "Tsk, tsk tsk, Maybe you should just accept that you aren't the competent apex predator your heat vision makes you think you are. If such an oblivious prey could get the best of you, maybe it's time to-" She didn't notice that Cyan was speaking in synchron to her, but the sound of a large creature running down the stairs was more than enough to distract her.

She turned around on her heels to face the ambusher, sending even more water droplets flying around the staircase. She was just in time to see Cyan disappear and spot the large predator running towards her and the others. "Watch out!" She shouted to the others and quickly evaporated all the water on her skin as her abilities kicked in and her eyes lit up in yellow. She deftly dodged to the side, hoping that the animal would avoid her.

Simple greetings exchanged, Samoth looked around them, eyeing their environment, scanning for any potential danger. Not that he didn't trust the two that arrived first to do such a thing, but it's always good to play it safe.
The area near the stairs was decently lit, compared to some of the rooms they had searched. He could see the details on everyone's faces, making it easy to assess their emotions.

"I thought you were a smart guy, but I guess I was wrong if you can't tell apart persperation and condensation." Katherine retorted, seemingly offended by his question.

Samoth examined her facial expressions. She didn't look too happy with his statement. "Surprised you could make such an observation of my intelligence, considering it appears as if you think there is a visual distinguishment between persperation and condensation." he eyed her as he said it, watching for any emotional signals.
"I also don't care much for acts as trivial as sexual arousal." he said. "Not that it would matter much in your case, if I did."
He smirked on the inside.
The statement wasn't entirely true, as he did find Katherine attractive, even if she was somewhat too energetic for his tastes. Which is the main reason he had less of a soft-spot for her than he did for say, Liselotte.
As he said it, the last group approached. Liselotte and Andreim. They exchanged greetings with the waiting four.

He glanced towards his right, just in time to see Cyan's tail stiffen, as well as his face adopting a horrified stare as he looked up the ascending staircase upon which they would soon move. Then the boy vanished. Well shit, Samoth thought. what is it this time?

He left his position from the wall as a massive beast finished its decent down the stairs. Surprisingly, the structure was able to hold its weight, seemingly without partially collapsing in. It eyed the group very briefly, then charged them at a fast pace. They weren't too far from the stairs, so there was little time to plan. They had to act fast.

Andreim

"Andreim dear, are you OK? You don't seem well. You look like you saw a ghost!" Katherine had said to him.

"I've saw your face. Close enough." Andreim replied to her in a calm but somewhat defensive way, he was not going to let her drive over him in Lise's vicinity.

"Tsk, tsk tsk, Maybe you should just accept that you aren't the competent apex predator your heat vision makes you think you are. If such an oblivious prey could get the best of you, maybe it's time to- Watch out!"

"Pay attention!" Andreim yelled out to Katherine as the feline predator charged towards them, he reacted instinctively and knew that he had to prevent this thing from getting close to him and the others.

Though he couldn't fight it as he would have prefered to do. There was not enough space for him to move as he wanted, Lise was here and he had to make sure it did not get to her. So he couldn't move. At the same time he had to make sure his team was not compromised. Activating his heat vision was a thing he often did out of reflex. Using it he could see where Cyan was, while the foxboy was invisible to the naked eye. The creature could surely scent him and possibly run him over and close to him were Katherine.

Using his right hand to call forth a jet stream of water to fly out and bend midair to try knock the invisible Cyan to the other side of the room, away from the feline beast charging onwards. But not only that but to provide a tool for Katherine to use. She could use her heat powers on his water to create steam if she desired to, to provide cover for her and those near her. On the other hand if the beast would run through the stream he could trap it in ice.

He could not hold the stream forever though and he held his left hand at the ready to stop the feline would it not go into the jet of stream or come straight for him and Lise.

Vittorio

Having remained silent for most of the time, he had followed Clara. To make certain she would not botch this one up. He had faith in her abilities, but her way of approach was different from his own. Nontheless she was the de facto leader of the group according to him. For now at least. If this mission would fail he would have to take matters into his own hands.

"Let's hope you are right. Clara. I shall play my part then..." Vittorio nodded in his astral form to the girl as she did her summoning, before he made his way up to the second floor before she did. Having grown arrogant and eager, Vittorio wanted to put his powers finally to use. Having been forced to watch from the sidelines long enough and mastering his powers, bent on using them for vengeance. Justice as he called it.

He floated around one corner to another and made his way quietly along one of the corridors of the second floor. If there were any ghosts in the building, he was not worried the slightest. He were kind of like one himself and the memory of his dear ones in mind he had his own ghosts and nightmares following him. Making him into the real haunted spirit in this place.

While not bearing any ill intent towards any of the St.Laurel students, he needed to subdue them in order to get to Alto. Perhaps he could find Katherine and convince her to join them? Her sister were after all part of the group he was now with. She still had a family and a chance to be happy. He would have to remind her of what was at stake. In the worst case he would have to take her or any of the others as a captive. He was already beyond the point where he could be saved. He did not want to be saved. He wanted to die. To be with those dear to him. But facing them without having been able to avenge them did not appeal to him the slightest.

"Let me walk in, through this den of sin..."

His astral form began to hymn and softly sing on a song. "...you're now at heavens door when I need you more, you were my ones in a lifetime..." He continued along the corridor, manifestations of his past showing themselves along the way.

Those whom had passed away. His parents. His friends and the love he never got to confess to. The manifestations began to fade away as quickly as they had appeared as he passed them by. Their friendly smiling faces. He stopped before the last one. The memory of Charlotte. How she tilted her head and gave him a smile with her eyes closed, before she faded away. As he reached his hand out to touch her image.

"Giving you my soul, letting you control. Take away this part of my lifetime. Memories of you, left me black and blue... I am glad to have known you in my lifetime..."

"Oh. You can just... to a ghost..." He wasn't sure what was more terrifying; the ghost, or his girlfriend who could apparently freeze them solid. He decided it didn't really matter and that at least she was on his side. He poked the ghostsicle curiously and jumped back, startled, as it teetered over and shattered into a million pieces. ". . . neat." He gulped, hoping he hadn't just gotten himself cursed or something. "So... I'm gonna let you choose where we go this time."

Maybe she'd have better luck avoiding the myriad of horrors that apparently infested this hellhole.

Now back in St. Laurel's, Ascot was not satisfied. He had found out what would be a wealth of information to other people - King being unchanging was the best bit - but there was nothing on achieving the happy ending that he wanted. More to the point, he was growing obsessed with Vittorio Twinveil, more than he had gotten obsessed with getting Alto and Clara together. Compared to making sure Vittorio - easily the most sympatethic character of the students of all three organizations - had his happy ending and stopped trying to kill Alto (did that guy have a death wish or something?), mere matchmaking was not enough.

There was also the fact that he had not gained anything more on Mephisto's identity except that he had a hidden agenda and unscrupulous means to promote it. That was also satisfying information to the anonymous Mephistos' students - the sibilings with light and smoke powers - that Michael had recruited for him. But it did not satisfy him. Stay detached, pull strings, his mind whispered. Too much focus on one objective will show all your cards. A nod from himself. I wish I can go talk to Alto part of him thought. Wait, why can't I? Samoth is away and he's my ally anyway.

And so Ascot went to walk towards where Alto was, using Narrative Role of Familiairty to make himself look like part of the Student Council...

Alto was gone. There were two other Student Council members finishing their duties, but the Student Council President had left before them. The remaining members almost didn't notice William entering.

"Oh William? Were you looking for Alto?" One of them asked. Narrative role of familiarity made them see him as another council member. That reaction perhaps meant another council member had entered in a similar manner. "He left a little while ago, he still had time to organize his desk though."

If William were to go to his desk, he'd see some stacks of papers. It was mostly admin work for tournament preparations, but there was something more interesting underneath. A bit of a dossier on Mephisto, it would seem. 'Photocopy' was clearly printed on the corner. It contained information on Mephisto's known history and businesses, but nothing much about his personal life or anything about him really. It did however contain information on where his businesses were located.

Why Alto had this was anyone's guess, but if William was having difficulty with getting leads, perhaps starting a little bit smaller in scale might help.

Lise was cursing her poor luck at encountering enemies when, ironically, nothing other than a giant cat pounced down from the top of the stairs. The previous wave of banter forgotten, she saw her other teammates spring into action. Lise admittedly did not have the most honed of combat reflexes, nor did she commonly deal with wild beasts - let alone ones that seemingly have crawled out of Hell itself, so she definitely couldn't spring into action as quickly as all the others.

Ignoring her normal theatrics of speaking in her royal tongue, she called two shadow servants between her and the demon cat. They stood in position, ready to take advantage of an opening on the enemy, or protect her if it decided to come towards her.

As he went through the papers, pretending to double-check the admin work, Ascot gave Alto credit where it was due; the latter was more perceptive than the former thought. The young man did not delude himself into thinking that Alto merely wanted to 'scout out' the opposition; if that was the case, the dossier would involve Mephisto less and his students more. Did Mr. Ganze share his own suspicions, or was it something else? Now, known history and business interests; what can he find?

The night was still young and Samoth was still delaying the return of the other St. Laurel's students as much as possible. Thank the God of Transportation for Rhea's public transport system. After chit-chatting a bit with the other Student Council members, Ascot would depart, taking his nightly leave of St. Laurel's itself. He would then go to the oldest of Mephisto's businesses, the one where the man would logically have left a record of what city he came from, if he was a foriegner.

~~~~
The accounting firm was inside a small office building; Ascot didn't go to the firm directly, because Interrogate Area worked on the building as a whole and not just component parts. In this unguarded place, Narrative Role of Familiarity worked without a hassle, and Ascot quickly found himself on the top floor of the structure the firm and nearby businesses worked in. Summoning the spirit of the place, Ascot asked three questions:
"Where did Mephisto say he came from when he bought office space for his firm in this building? What did he look like? Does he still visit here?"
The spirit was notably more human than the spirit of Rhea's walls. He looked like a very young man with wild hair, and a pinstriped suit.
"Hey, hey, hey, now, that's a lot of questions to just dump on the new guy." It said with a smirk. It lay back, floating in the air with his arms crossed over his chest. "Ain't there somebody more experience you can ask? Don't think you'll get too much out of me."
It looked like this spirit would be a bit hard to deal with.
Ascot nods. "My questions are fairly simple, though, and surely within your capabilities. Or are you admitting that you don't know everything going on here for some reason?"
"I didn't even know I was supposed to exist until just now, so maybe I missed something when I wasn't paying attention." He said as he shrugged. "The Boss hasn't been around for a while. I wasn't keeping track but maybe 3 or so years was the last time he came over in person, but he has plenty of middle guys coming around.
"When he bought the place, he went through like three different people so I didn't even know what he wanted it for. Crap, I think I only saw the guy come here once during the first year or so. His picture's public domain though, and I don't remember him changing any."
Another nod. Unchanging, just like King. The young man then drew his smartphone and searched for a picture of Mephisto himself. Once he was done, he would ask the spirit of the building one last question: "Has Mephisto ever mentioned any enemies?"
"Oh, to us? No, but there are so many that you barely have to look for 'em all. We get threats to the office all the time, but no one does anything to us because they usually find out we ain't got much to do with Mephisto at all," The spirit said. "Hey, wait, doesn't that mean you're his enemy as well?"
Ascot smiled. "Took you a long time to figure that out. But don't worry, I am not your enemy."
"Hey now, I've been alive for about 2 minutes so excuuuuse me!" The spirit replied with a toothy grin. "Anyway if you really want to find out something juicy about Mephisto, you should ask my sister on the outskirts of town. Here, gimme a map."
When a map was handed to the spirit, he'd point out a certain spot in the forest just outside of the city limits.
The boy thankfully had a map, and after having the location of the forest spot marked, he would dismiss the spirit of the building...
Christine
"Alright then! Let's go on to the next room!" Christine said cheerfully, taking Rurik's hands with hers. They went out of the room they were currently in and walked in to the next room in the hallway.
"Ghosty, ghosty, come out and play~" Christine said as she began opening all the drawers she could find. She even bent down and looked under the bed, allowing Rurik to see the panties she wore that day as her coat rode up scandalously. They were black today.
Rurik raised an eyebrow as Christine looked under a bed. He sighed and pulled out a small notepad from his pocket, flipping it open to the fifteenth page, "And today's bet was... patterned. Dammit," he muttered to himself and put it away. After a few months of this ridiculousness, he'd felt compelled to make a game out of it.
"You know," he said more clearly to Christine, "Technically we're looking for people, not ghosts..." It wasn't so much that he wanted to find these students, that would just lead to drama, but that he didn't want Christine rustling up any more spirits. For all he knew the next one wouldn't be so... chill.
William Ascot
A hitchhike, and further use of Narrative Role of Familiarity, and Ascot would be at the gates of the old facility that stood beyond the city limits. The facility where clues to Mephisto's identity would be found. Drawing his taser and pepper spray, Ascot knew that his foremost defense would still be his narrative power; he had wasted his contacts and support on the earlier trip to The Wall. Here's hoping demons and ghosts would be affected by Narrative Role of Familiairty, or better yet, that there were no sapient beings around.
For a moment, fear overcame him, and his knees shook. But remembering who was at stake, the boy kept walking to the old laboratory/facility, passing through old and rusted gates and weather-battered doors. Climbing the old stairwell that led to the top, Ascot knew that further exploration beyond said top would be...ill-advised. Drawing his taser just in case there came any intruder, Ascot would lift his right arm in a great summoning gesture; the spirit of this place should respond when needed.
Alexander Ascot
Alexander Ascot was enjoying a cup of coffee; sterotypical black coffee like a sterotypical cop. However, he was inwardly worried by news from his parents; Willi had been tasked with an important investigation even he should not know about. More to the point, he was inwardly occupied with preperations for the tournament next month; countermeasures needed to be devised against cheating. Nevertheless, in the Office of Juvenile Affairs' HQ, all seemed peaceful, watchful, but peaceful.
The Spirit materialized as the spirit of a very young girl, with bandages loosely draped all over her. She was wearing a hospital gown and had many scars on what visible skin she had.
"Hello," She greeted. "Are you finally back?"
Ascot blinked at that. "Who is finally back?"
The spirit tilted its head, staring quizically at the two before her.
"Oh, you weren't from here then. I thought Mephisto had come back." She said with a sigh. "This place has been abandoned for a long time, maybe 5 years or so? I haven't seen another soul enter since then."
"Hmm..." Michael thought out loud. There was a plethora of information to be gathered here. Michael had to hand it to Ascot; the guy had a lot more info than Michael could've imagined. All one needed was to ask the right questions. Hopefully that wouldn't be too hard. Opening up a notepad app on his phone, Michael asked the spirit, "What did Mephisto come here for?"
Ascot would then smile at Michael; he was clearly smart, then ask the spirit his own question: "What was your structure used for?"
"Oh, magic experiments, mostly, but I think Mephisto was here for something else." The spirit said. "We did all kinds of things, really. Weapons, Alchemy, animals, you name it. A lot of people came in, but not all of them are out yet."
As the spirit talked, Michael was typing in the info onto his phone. It was vague, but it was something. "How long had this been going on? And if so many activities were being performed here, why was this place abandoned?" Michael continued to ask.
Ascot was more blunt. "Two things; any hints as to that 'something else' Mephisto spoke? And two, were any of his experiments on children?!"
"Hmmm, I think in the two years this place was operational Mephisto never once said why he did anything. He gave instructions but not all of them made sense." The spirit continued. "There were never any children here. It would've been too conspicuous, I think. He only went after people nobody would miss."
The spirit flickered for a moment, as if it were remembering something.
"The facility was abandoned when a few creations went wild. Most of the staff escaped unharmed, but well, you don't have to be the fastest when you're being chased by a hungry beast," She said. "You just have to be faster than your friend."
So an accident occurred. That was just typical of these facilities; there was always something that had to have gone wrong. Michael continued to press for more information. "Were there any experiments that the people here mainly focused on? Any that Mephisto was particularly interested in?"
Ascot paused, then asked, "Did Mephisto mention any God or Goddess while in here? Who was his chief subordinates in the facility and who among them survived its destruction? And a third question; did Mephisto use any powers here, and what were they if he did?"
"I can't be sure what they were interested in because they'd export documents all the time. Everything was gone by the time it all ended. The researchers mostly followed instructions sent to them from outside here, and the times when Mephisto came, he was usually just checking the facility." The spirit replied. "Although, the last time he came was a week before it all happened."
The spirit shifted uncomfortably.
"He used something, I don't know what it was, but there was red lightning. The animals started getting more aggresive and instructions stopped coming in. The staff didn't quit for some reason, not until everything came loose. Whatever Mephisto wanted, I think he got it."
So many questions, yet the answers only gave way to more questions. The "red lightning" part was definitely of particular interest, though. More research would have to be done on that. As for the researchers, well either they were crazy enough to continue working in such hazardous conditions, or Mephisto had far more influence on them than what even money could provide. Well, that wasn't too surprising, considering how little anyone could find on they guy, even with Ascot's abilities.
"I have nothing left to ask. What about you, Ascot?" Michael asked.
Ascot said, "One last question, building. Do you have a list of surviving researchers? Wait, there's another one; has Mephisto ever mentioned St. Laurel's or St. Laurel himself?"
"I don't know what St. Laurel's is. I don't think he ever mentioned it, but I can't be sure." She replied. Not being from the city of Rhea, this would be the expected answer. "Well, as for the surviving researchers..."
She spent the next couple of minutes giving them a list of names.
"That should be all of them..." She finished.
Ascot yawned in tiredness, then said, "Spirit, thank you for your time." He gave a slight bow, before turning to Michael once more. "I instructed Samoth to keep any fight going as long as possible; we have time for one last trip. A trip to Andre Baumann's place. Interested?"
"Sure, why not," Michael agreed, putting away his phone. "Seems more interesting than what King was gathering Vigilantes for."
William Ascot + Vernon (With Permission)
Andre Baumann's house was rubble and ashes; a quick question of whatever locals were there said that the residence burnt down long ago due to a 'stove fire'. Ascot loudly sighed, while Vernon said to the former, "Arson, it seems, although there is no evidence for it?"
The younger boy would nod. "The rabbit hole deepens. We're going to have to sift through the rubble to find the basement."
Vernon looked at him, "We have a painter who can make mystic traps, Stargazer William. Just have him make the rubble float."
Ascot smiled at that. "That's a good idea, Vernon." Turning towards Michael, he said, "What do you think? Can one of your 'Trap Arts' make the rubble float upwards, out of the basement?"
