Paul briefly considered Xu Jian's suggestion of getting a gun, but worried that he might hit one of the non-immortals on their side decided against it. He did make a mental note to get at least some firearm training though. Once they were inside the Rift he could barely contain his excitement and had to keep from, simply dashing into the open door.

However since he both knew nothing about exploring Rifts and remembered that the maingoal was to field test Alice he stayed in the first room with the others. He kept glanzing towards the west of the room though. Trying to take his mind off of it he decided to inspect the room. First up was a mural of a knight and lion, since he figured someone else would do the obvious and check the altar. In case the mural would prove important later he carefully made a rub of it. Though since he didn't have the right tools it went slowly and wasn't too detailed.

Norway – Skiafjell Peak Approach

Getting underway did not, unfortunately, mean a moment or two to relax. The snowcat's speed, the uneven terrain, and the sudden turns led to no small amount of jostling, forcing occupants to hold on for their dear lives as the driver vied to catch up to the other two. Still, some of the rift divers saw fit to shout over the dual roars of the engine and the wind. One of them, a man spotted by Marxion in the ski resort, raised his voice first, talking as if he'd been part of the conversation the whole time, when in fact this instance constituted his first actual association with Marxion's makeshift team. Understandably, this put the brawler off a touch. “Uh, don't take this the wrong way, but who the bloody hell are ya?” he questioned bluntly, eyebrows raised. While the man's demeanor seemed nice enough, something about him rubbed Marxion the wrong way. Maybe it was the two goons watching him like hawks and accompanying him closer than ticks, or perhaps the shotgun he brandished in extreme proximity. Did he recognize, maybe as a result of eavesdropping, the budding partnership between the golden-eyed men and want in? Thinking himself accepted was one hell of an assumption to make.

Soraya managed to install herself in the snowcat as well, somewhat to Marxion's chagrin. He wouldn't have been unhappy if she got left behind, and now -judging by what she said- she thought herself along for the ride, too? “You sure you ain't got too much class to 'ang around the likes of me, miss?” That woman who inexplicably agreed to Soraya's coercion sat nearby too, sour of expression but pretty of face and refreshingly quiet of demeanor. Her choice of words and weaponry suggested a strong, down-to-earth sort of attitude, which Marxion didn't mind working with. Still, more wasn't exactly merrier. But for better or worse, their fates were bound the moment she -and for that matter, the others- climbed aboard his snowcat.

After another few minutes of hurtling over the snow at high speed, the snowcat came around the edge of a slope overlooking a vast expanse of trees, and saw for the first time a rippling, otherworldly globe sitting atop a hill. “Ah,” Marxion observed, “There she is. Means it's just about go time, I reckon.” Getting up from his sitting position, he crouched on his seat and watched the other snowcats pointedly, tracking their movements as they got closer and closer to the rift. For one reason or another, they'd outpaced his own vehicle by a fair margin, meaning that his group would be the last through the wish. However, were one to look at Marxion's face, they'd notice him wearing a smug grin.

After one more curve, there lay only a relatively straight path ahead down a slight incline, with the rift another quarter-mile away. A few moments more, and the other snowcats reached its edge. Marxion saw them begin to slow down. “Our friends over there ain't playin' around,” he said aloud, still smiling. Holding up both hands, he pointed finger-guns and the opposing vehicles. “But neither'm I. Ba-bang!” He pulled the trigger, and all of a sudden the snowcats jerked backward at impossible speed, becoming vague blurs as they zoomed in reverse. In quick succession the blurs shotby, flying back, up, around, and down the mountain, with their baffled occupants inside. Hollering, Marxion turned around to watch him go, clapping his hands. “Bahahahah! Enjoy the resort, fellas!” Just like that, the opposition was gone—returned to where they started.

A moment later the snowcat ground to a halt beside the rift. In high spirits Marxion leaped out, clapping the driver on the shoulder before sauntering toward his goal. “Whoever it was that Prospector mentioned will lose time dealin' with those chumps,” he explained, “So we've got free reign in the rift.” Turning back briefly, he glanced at Edison, his escort, Reese, Soraya, Jules, and the three other random rift divers who'd also gotten into their snowcat. Their faces showed confusion, amusement, amazement, and excitement. They found him, meanwhile, incredulous. “Whats'a matter? No gratitude for me single 'andedly delivering you this rift?” With a smirk, he waved his hand. “Ah, s'alright. You'll thank me later.” Despite the substantial advantage afforded the group, they didn't have all the time in the world, and needed to get going sometime soon. Now, however, all that remained was to take a few steps, and set foot on the grand new frontier.

Inside the rift stood a great castle, majestic and imposing. The sight of it evoked a whistle from Marxion. “Now that's a pretty sight. Wonder what all's in there.” Reaching up, he tapped his temple, creating a Save Point on his skin. A brief yellow flash cooled down to leave a dark brown mark, a clock face with an 'X' across it. If anything went wrong, he could return to this state and this position. As a reminder in case it did, he then proceeded to draw an 'X' in the dirt before him with his shoe, a symbol he would see after a rewind and know meant that he loaded a save. When braving the unknown, one could never be too cautious; only then, with insurance, could one go wild and truly live in the thrill of the moment.

"Well, at the risk of pointing out the obvious..." Charlotte said, leaning over the pedestal and looking down the hole, "Either something goes in here or something comes out and it'll probably be involved in opening those other doors. If you have anything long and thin you want to shove into some tight holes, now's the time."

She paused, mostly to see if anyone was going to laugh or groan, then kept going, "Anyway, I'm no art expert, so I'd say keep looking further in."

No sooner had she made her call had Lizzie arrived to give an introduction. The first thing Katie noticed was of course the massive duffel bag dropped to the floor. She could hear the clatter of metal inside it and gave the other girl a concerned look. “Er, what are those?” She had an idea of what they were, but it did well to comfort her if Lizzie confirmed the contents herself. Weren’t there regulations about bringing firearms to a public space anyway?

In any case, Daichi took control of the situation, informing them of their lack of a boat driver before Kirk seemed to offer up his own services. Katie didn’t have protest against that and so left with the rest of the group when it was time to depart. It took some time but the group had finally managed to arrive at their destination. A Rift, large and defying all physics of reality, stared back at them like an endless void. Once all was said and done, Katie entered with the rest of the group.

Immediately, she came to regret her decision. A frown slowly formed on her lips as she took all that they were to traverse and cross. The shack they balanced on looked precarious enough and could fall out any second. They would have landed right into the muddy waters below if it did. “Ugh…maybe I should have chosen better shoes to wear today,” Katie remarked to herself, not wanting to wade in that brackish sea.

"Hmm~" Soraya hummed lightly. "Sometimes one has to do something they don't entirely enjoy to get to something they do." She replied in response to Marxion's question. "And that's part of the whole adventure, is it not? Besides," She flashed him a small smile. "If I am with you, your chances of success go up quite a bit. You should be glad I am here, yes?" Confidence or hubris? Difficult to say, but it was clear at least she was certain of herself in a number of ways.

The ride in the snowcat was pleasant enough. Soraya contended herself by deciding now would be a good time to check her hair and do a bit of nail work while listening to the idle chatter of everyone else. Quite the eclectic bunch. Judging from their talents they certainly made a decent team, and eventually they arrived at their destination, in which, Marxion decided to play a dirty trick on the others apparently.

"...quite the useful trick." Soraya mused getting out of the snowcat. Really, how inelegant was this person? His manner of speech and even his attribute seemed to be something quite tricky. Well, no matter. Soraya focused instead on the rift in front of them - a majestic castle rising into the sky! Oh marvelous!

"Indeed, perhaps you're not entirely a waste." Soraya replied with a light laugh upon seeing the castle, standing a bit closer to Reese than the others. "Hm...well enough standing around. Shall we head inside?" Soraya began walking towards the entrance of the castle with a slow, purposeful pace.

Alice said nothing.

Instead, she proceeded about the room and drifted about it without another word. It was a protocol that she had been programmed with, and had performed previously: To investigate the area immediately after entering a rift, as thoroughly as possible, before moving on. There was no way of being certain if there was anything important immediately upon their arrival or if it was simply an ordinary room, but that possibility was disregarded by the small robotic girl. The most important thing to her was to ensure that no potentially important details were left unchecked. After several moments, she nodded imperceptibly to herself, staring into the hole in the middle of the room. While it was impossible to come to any clear conclusions, she felt she at least had a hypothesis about what it could indicate as she returned to the others.

"Analysis: An object may be found to be placed in the hole."

Albrecht gazed appreciatively at the heroic mural for a moment, letting out a low whistle as he allowed the details to sink in. A part of him, admittedly a less intelligent, more contrarian part, wanted to set the magically-sealed door on fire, just to see what would happen, but alas, it was Alice who was their guidepost and leader this time around, and the green-haired youth was just there to see things happen. He glanced momentarily at the western door, wondering if someone else wanted to take a look in it, but unless Alice moved on, the scion of the Dietrich conglomerate felt no particular need to point it out.

"I'll bring some light in there then," he said, walking up to the raised platform. Extracting a marble from his pockets, he rubbed his thumb over it, setting the glass ablaze with a soft, slow flame. It neither burned himself, nor did it immediately damage the surface; a weak, but bright flame was what surrounded the object. With that, the young man dropped it down into the hole, watching it light up the insides while also listening to when it would inevitably hit something.

And when it did?

Well, Alice was a robotic girl. She can make the calculations of the drop from there.

An object may be found, hmm? Thoughts crossed Xu Jian's mind. Maybe there was something they were missing. It wasn't the brightest of rooms. They may have been a hidden switch on the wall or a plug shaped key hidden behind a rock somewhere. All it would take is someone to look for something. Which, by some miracle of generally bad planning, nobody had done.

"Paul, you heard the lil' lady. Go search around this room and see if you can find an actual key. Or go outside and find a rock that looks like it'd fit perfectly in this hole? I'm going to try to provolone this door open."

So she shoved her staff into the hole. As she had done so, it had shortened in length. This, of course, had a reason. It increased in girth as it had done so, squishing and stretching iron to perfectly fit into the hole. If something didn't happen, she'd push and spin the rod. If nothing happened after that? Well, at least she could extract Albrecht's glowing marble from the hole to make room for the actual key. Really, it was a win-win situation.

Unless that hole was connected to a 120/240v three-phase powerline.

Then Xu Jian would probably die.

"In case any of you are wondering, I have a special license from my contractor," Lizzie said as she noticed the obvious apprehension of her companions. Other than that, though, she remained silent on their trip to the rift.

The weapons she had with her was certainly something that would need a special license to carry. All of them, cutting edge military equipment sent for performance test in the rift. It wasn't the kind of tool that would be seen in the hands of an average Joe with no contacts or experience.

When they arrived at the rift, the first thing Lizzie did was load her gun and then, look at the others. "A swamp was only expected of this place," she said as if replying to Katie's complain. "If we stay out of the high water whatever you are wearing shouldn't make much difference.

"Either way, when are we going to move? There's a lot to explore before it gets dark."

Shit went down fast, but not in the way she thought it would. The last time things went well, something terrible usually followed the aftermath almost poetically. She didn't give a damn about what Marxion said, instead taking note of the idea he had in mind as the other snowcats uselessly switched directions.

She stared at him for a brief moment before turning back to see if they'd crash into something at any moment. It didn't matter whether she hated working with people in the Rifts- as long as they knew themselves and how to be useful, she'd have a better time focusing on not making herself slow down.

She'd admit that Marxion not being a combat-only wonder didn't exactly follow her expectations, but that was for the better. Utility was always golden in her eyes, and so far, the potential utility of the people around her proved to be better than the last rift she went to. There were no worse teammates than the ones who'd touch themselves to the idea of confronting a challenge or some mystic crap, all the while being absolutely useless.

Her pistol remained snugly in her grip as she grabbed her pipe as well, keeping them lowered as they approached the Rift. A large castle towered from afar. Pretty sight? Oh, it's pretty, alright. She could already smell all sorts of pretty shit they could get into just by looking at it. It wasn't a rift for nothing, no matter how easy it could end up being.

She glanced at the shotgun wielder for a moment before turning to Jules. Again, she simply stared at the young man with a blank look before facing the castle again.

"Hm... well enough standing around. Shall we head inside?"
Soraya Labelle

Good to know at least one of our thoughts are identical.

Flipping off the safety mechanism of her pistol, Reese didn't bother nodding, instead glancing briefly at Soraya as she walked forward without a word.

After Paul was done with his rub it didn't match the mural exactly but both the knight and his opponent were easily recognizable. As Albrect prepared to drop the marble in the hole he decided to join the others in case something happened only to be disappointed when it didn't. He was about to follow Xu Jian of looking for a key or rock or something outside when she apparently got a different idea.

Seeing her change the size of her staf made him wish he could do so with his ax, but as far as he knew he could only summon it or send it back where it came from. "Hey that is a pretty neat trick, you got there."

Mausoleum

The marble that Albrecht had dropped into the hole would find hard stone soon enough, revealing that the indentation was no more than roughly three inches deep. The staff that Xu Jian placed inside soon thereafter would find no such luck in manipulating the nonexistent structure withing. Nothing was keeping the marble in place, either, and once removed, there would be no remaining mark. Not even the slightest hint of manipulation would make itself present, which meant that the stone, hard as it was, had no essential moving parts that could be manipulated with things as they were now.

Castle of Snow

Once the group had moved past the imposing steps to meet the castle gates, what would make itself abundantly clear at first glance was that the doors—almost implausibly tall and wide had the explorers not been used to such grandeur—seemed to part as they stepped forward. The gust of warm air from within was a far cry from the biting cold outside, and the warm lighting from the various candles lining the walls of the main entryway coupled with the luxuriously-designed interior made it seem as if someone—or something—had been expecting guests.

Lined along the walls, all the way down the entryway and into the main hall, stood suits of armor, each ornately decorated and wielding some sort of weapon. Interspersed between pillars and other decor, such as vases or stone busts, these pieces of equipment stood by. The flickering candlelight coupled with the chandeliers hanging overhead made the meticulously polished pieces shine even further; a testament towards their craftsmanship, or something more?

After a few moments of observing the hole in the floor, Alice's gaze turned away from it and towards the door. At the moment, nothing that had been attempted on the hole worked. This was what Alice had concluded from her calculations. The item required to use the hole properly was likely located somewhere nearby, either deeper into the temple or perhaps outside. As a result, continuing to linger in the room was obviously not a very effective idea. It was a waste of time at best, and an active detriment at most. After a few moments, the robotic girl turned to face the exist.

"Conclusion: We should depart in order to search for the item required for this hole."

Kirk Poirier - NOLA rift

@KoL@TheWindel@Vesuvius00@PKMNB0Y

"Yeah, you usually want some good boots at least thigh high before you go walkin' around the bayou." the wrestler agreed, drawing up alongside the pair as he himself took in the murky depths before them. Much could be said as to Kirk having a more educated eye than the rest, being intensely familiar with the terrain, but you had to remember— this was a rift. These new worlds may have sometimes mirrored the landscapes and vistas of their home dimension, but there was no telling as to whether or not they were a one-to-one match.

"Sunumma..." he mumbled beneath his breath as his gaze, following Daichi's, traveled up, up, and up some more as he tried to see the top of a tree that dwarfed even the oaks on campus. Silently, he echoed the international's sentiment— even with a full belay system that one would be challenging, and considering they didn't even think to bring waders...

"Anyone got a good sized stick around?" He asked, changing gears. "We can use that to poke around in the waters, see how deep anyplace might go before we step in it."

Albrecht peered in the shallow hole once more, before nodding at Alice's assessment. "Sounds good enough for me." A bit more concentration, and the burning marble was burnt away completely, leaving nothing, not even ash, left. Briefly, he looked up to the ceiling, noting the stained glass windows that seeped with the same magical energy he saw from the door (ostensibly to keep them all inside), before turning back to the slightly-ajar door. Six quick steps brought him beside it, and he opened it with a flourish, stepping aside and bringing one arm up to his chest.

Bowing with a smile that wasn't serious at all, Albrecht said to their immortal cyborg tank woman, "Ladies first."

Akuta Daichi

Daichi couldn't help but nod his head in agreement to his teammates' words, and given that there was no way to handle their goal other than by pushing ahead, it seemed like they were going to have to get dirty one way or another. Kirk's suggestion—to use a stick or something of the sort to prod around—was probably the most logical thing to do. After a few moments of glancing around though, the closest thing that he could find to use for that purpose was a plank from the cabin. With a bullet of air, the piece broke off, and if anything it seemed like it was stable enough to not break apart despite the flowing water.

"Alright, let's see how far this goes..." he said, slowly lowering the piece of wood into the water. Given that it was about a meter long, the fact that it only went in about a third of the way down meant two things.

One, that the water itself wasn't particularly deep, at least for the path forward.

Second, that any shoes and pants used here today were probably as good as gone if they weren't made for this sort of terrain.

"Aah... It's a good thing that I invested in some boots," he said, slowly stepping into the water and using the plank to prod the ground ahead of them.

The path upstream was fairly forgiving, all things considered; given that no fish-like monsters had assaulted them thus far and that the water seemed relatively shallow up up until the clearing where the massive tree was, it almost seemed as if there wouldn't be a problem pressing forward.

Almost, of course, being the key word here.

Past the stream that they pushed past to get here (and the massive tree that, as it turned out, was right in the middle of it), the land seemed to grow increasingly more stable. Given that the only path showing any possibility of immediate progress was a path that seemed to snake downhill that led into another bog-like area, though...

Well, if anything, the land surrounding the tree was a bit less anxiety-inducing than the shack that they had left behind.

"All right, this is probably a good place to set up anything. Establishing a place where we can recuperate if necessary before we push ahead... I can handle a bit of that. If anyone wants to scout ahead in the meantime, then by all means go right ahead."

@KoL@Vesuvius00@HereComesTheSnow@TheWindel

Mausoleum

Upon leaving the main chamber of the building, the first thing—or, rather, things—that would be seen by those present was the array of gravestones. The door, it seemed, led to a graveyard that seemed to stretch for roughly fifty meters in any given direction. Scattered left and right, though, the faint scent of decay lingered in the air despite the faint wind blowing throughout.

Off in the distance to the left was another stone building, less than a quarter of the size of the room that they had just exited, situated next to a gnarled tree. From the right, however, the sound of something being dragged across the grassy earth could be made out, even from this distance. As for what was making that noise... Well, that was something that would simply have to be looked into.

To say she was excited to see what secrets this castle held, was an understatement. Once she took the first step inside, her excitement only grew. The warm air met her flesh, making her almost wish she wasn't dressed so warmly, but the fabulous decor of the place quickly quelled any discomfort. Suits of armor lined the walls, befitting of a knightly castle. Ah, she wished she could take all of them home but that was an implausibility.

"So." Saying nothing to no one in particular, Soraya walked further inside, bolting over to one of the suits of armor and quickly inspecting it. "How do we want to handle the exploration, hm? I would say I myself should take point before we go deeper."

Norway – Castle of Snow

Hurried, but not rushed. Eager, but not avid. Thrilled, but not amazed. Though hot to trot, Marxion tempered his enthusiasm with experience. In a new rift, any step could provoke a deadly ambush or spring a devious trap. He let Soraya mosey on in, since she seemed content to put herself out in front. In his book a reset that worked at the speed of thought beat out a metal suit, but whatever. Far be it from him to give the princess what she wanted. As he proceeded after her, Marxion scanned the structure's elaborate interior. Sconces, braziers, bas-reliefs, the works. Everything seemed so perfect.

That could stand to change. With a pep in his step Marxion hurried over to the nearest vase, swiped it from where it stood, and upended it over the floor. As valuable as the vases and things themselves might be, he found himself short on time and sack room, so whatever he could carry on his person would be his objective. That sort of stuff could be stashed anywhere, and while the bottom of a trapped chest in this place's dankest bowels seemed likelier than a vase in the ornate entry hall, he felt pretty good about leaving no stone unturned. Courage came easy with an undo button.

At Alice's suggestion the group went into the next room after Albrecht had completely incinerated the marble he had dropped in the hole. The combination of the grave stones and the sound of someone being dragged made Paul nervous and without saying anything he took out his metal baseball bat, since he didn't want to waste energy carrying his ax around which he could summon when ever he needed it.

Since he didn't know if the cause of the dragging sound had already heard them or not he was quiet the entire time but at every intersection or turn they came across he left an indention in the ground with his bat to make it easier to find their way back.

“Edison Wright, and I’m here now so I guess you’re stuck with me. I don’t think it will ever hurt to have another experienced rift diver on board anyway..”

He ran his hands down the front of the vest, ensuring everything was secured in place. Out of the much depleted bag he loaded the weapon with a handful of shells and racked one into the chamber. The empty bag went over a shoulder, ready for any loot he may find.

Outside again he adjusted his body to keep more blood flowing through his extremities, keeping them warm without the need of any extra clothing. He looked up at the castle with a genuine smile. All he could think about was telling his daughter about iot. He had heard that she was obsessed with being a princess right now.

“How stereotypical. I love it.”

Inside he took the position just behind Marxion. In his experience an ambush usually let the point man past and took the second down first, splitting the formation. But that was in the mountains and streets of the middle east and enemies in the Rifts didn’t have to play by human rules.
