“Yeah,” the proctor replied, her tone clearly not pleased as she monitored the scenario from her laptop. “I can see that. It’s unreasonable to expect him to be able to continue after this, so check up on him on-site and if you can, move him out to the starting area.”

She paused, the sounds of a few button presses ringing clearly through the call, before letting out a sigh. “Medical’s gonna get there in three minutes. We’ll have a chat about this later, Tanifuji.”

And with that, the Chinese bun girl ended the call and turned her attention back to the scene playing out right before her.

Circling around the back, Hiroki had a great view of the ruptured engine, metal folded into cement and rebar, the stench of warm oil seeping out onto the floor. They definitely wouldn’t be able to use the bus now, for transportation or anything else. But it was the least of his concerns as the turbine-armed boy approached the windows. They were all closed quite tightly, and against the locks, his nails had a higher chance of breaking off than forcing it open. It made a sad amount of sense too: the bus itself had been air conditioned throughout the trip due to the cold weather. And through the glass, he could see the child-proctor quite clearly, looking back at him with a slightly tilted head.

Luckily or not, it turned out that he didn’t have to sneak in through the back anyways.

Shun’s gambit had worked. More specifically, it hadn’t been a gambit at all, only a feat paid in dizzying headaches, abnormal pixilation, and heart-throbbing exhaustion. No matter the strength or speed of an individual, it mattered not against light-speed movement and before the Mastermind could even pull the trigger, his gun had disappeared, the trigger finger pulling on thin air. If this was a different situation, the muscle-bound man would have applauded Shun for his quick decision-making. As it stood though…

“Tch.” The first frown formed on the man’s face, before he leaped down the stairs, a double-stomp directed towards Mari. Wherever Shun had gone, it didn’t matter. There was no hero that would abandon their partner when in peril.

It wasn’t pleasant indeed, having a roll of flesh pushed up against the hard edges of the manhole. Goro’s intentions were well, but they were also painful, a gradual indentation being formed around her hips. It wouldn’t take all that long, honestly, for Sumi to be free, but it was in that time that other insects began to fly, attracted to the warmth of her flailing body, the rush of something that lived. And oh, she could feel them all now, crawling up and around, bouncing off when she kicked, only to land again.

Disgusting disgusting disgusting. It wouldn’t be long before she was freed but it was disgusting.

Houki’s eyes flared red, another set of beams about to burst.

But she had not moved.

And when one gazed unto the abyss, the abyss gazes back.

Moments before twin lasers shot from her eyes, the Ruler appeared from the fog, vespers of condensation trailing off her clothes, her own stormy eyes locking onto the ash-blonde student. And in that instant, the red light winked out. The anger vanished. And all that was left was a knee-trembling fear that grew over time. Houki found herself unable to move. Unable to run. Unable to so much as breathe, her heart rate going out of control. Everything was falling to tiny, broken pieces, and her thoughts were crashing into each other meaninglessly.

For all that was extraneous about this villain, the sheer dominance in her presence was real. And one step by one, the woman in Victorian dress approached Houki, reaching out with a gloved hand.

Then, Kaito’s guitar roared to life, sounding over all the ambient screams, his throaty voice joining soon after. It wasn’t a good performance. His fingers still felt as if they were made of lead. But still he sang, shredding away for a performance that wasn’t for anyone but himself. And within his heart, his Power Chord rang, the rhythm and rhyme, the emotions and skill, all mixing together and building up.

Beyond the strength and speed granted, what was in a song?

In the recesses of her terror-filled mind, it was the voice of a massive pervert and a terrible musician that reached Houki.

The situation was falling to pieces, the reverbrations of a gunshot enough to cause screams to erupt in every which direction, and the subsequent slamming and locking of the doors only caused further distress to everyone within. Yu-Ri hissed. It was a good decision to move out of the way, but she only had a general idea where the gunshot came from, and she was certain now that the executive wasn’t here. Or, if he was, his security wasn’t actually doing anything.

Actually, what the hell, where was the security?

The schoolgirl in mourning clothes narrowed her eyes, before dropping down onto the ground once more. Biding their time? Or already taken care of? Or were they all enemies to begin with? She clicked her tongue, cursing herself for not noticing it all earlier, before flicking off her phone’s light. What a pain in the ass job. But if the big man wasn’t here...

VIP rooms then? Or maybe just a quieter part of the first floor? Maybe they were hiding in the toilet. Maybe there was an emergency exit somewhere. And if there was…Yu-Ri had no intention of playing as a hostage for some bastard playing with the PA system. Drawing in a deep breath, she slid between con-goers quietly, carefully, heading towards one of the definitively-shut doors to the halls.

She let out a breath. Placed her hand against the door. And pushed it open.

Psychic waves and brilliant lightning burst through the forest field, scattering a thousand green leaves as the earth trembled at the might of magic. She felt it in her bones, the thrum of battle, the synaptic flow of excitement pulling her further and further and further. No time. They had no time to waste on these plebeians, and she had no patience for anything more than the complete obliteration of the foes before them. Cecilia let out a breath.

The leaves still danced as she took the first step, a roar of wind at her wake.

As static electricity crackled about, the aftereffects of River’s Plasma Burst filling the air with ash, Cecilia’s first blow struck like lightning, polished steel slicing into the flesh of a Warg that attempted to stop her before thrusting towards the Trainer and pulling back, hoping to drag the support-focused monstrosity closer to the muscle-bound warriors behind her. That same pull extended into a backwards thrust against the scorched earth itself. For any normal human, it would have simply lead to the shaft getting stuck in the dirt, but Cecilia wasn’t normal. Her might had been boosted to superhuman levels, and her skills chained seamlessly together, propelling her forwards and upwards with a Pole Jump. Airborne, she flipped twice as her enhanced vision caught her next target in the time-slowed world that all AGI-focused players existed in.

And once she spotted it, Lycanbane bared her fangs.

Falling from above, the Lancer grasped her Zenon Spear with both hands and thrust downwards onto the Warg behind the Trainer, a Piercing Strike that would tear through fur, fat, and flesh as she landed upon its mangy back. She kicked off immediately afterwards, her spear trail of scarlet pixels, before Cecilia pivoted to the side, stepping away from the anticipated counterattacks.

Her spear sang its bloody song. Her bound hair billowed in a storm of her own making.

“Come.”

Golden radiance spilled through her Light Bane Cloak, the next string of strikes already visualized.
Ash cleaned the blood off as she tainted the streambed, but not the fat that clung on stubbornly still, yellow and white mixed with pale chips of bone and tendon. Matteo’s own hands bit against his blade as he fumbled through the murky, bloody water for it. The pain was neglible though, compared to his skull splitting headache, and after a few times, he was able to sheath the knife into his belt once more. Muu, by the dying embers of their firepit, sobbed quietly, her show of weakness unbothered by whatever other monstrous denizens wandered the wilderness.

Off in the distance, the “wuoracc wuoracc” of the retreating goblin continued to sound, growing fainter and fainter. Their enemy was leaving. They were allowed this moment of peace amongst the stench of cooked rabbit, ashes, and blood. So the trio, for all of Ash’s directives, did nothing.

And as their blood continued to flow, as their injuries worsened, as their flesh turned paler and paler, they could just barely hear it, the “hraccc hraccc” of another monster’s cry.

They had yet to leave the woods, after all.

In one moment, she was picking herself off the ground. In the next, sirens were blaring, the lights were being cut off, and shit, she had to move! Throwing away all semblance of common courtesy, Yu-Ri activated the flashlight app on her phone and pushed through the crowds of the central stage, jostling aside those still too confused to do anything else but murmur or turn around. Securing a spot for herself against the wall so that she wouldn’t be in the middle of the crowd when panic eventually settled, the young girl climbed up onto a chair and swept through the masses of people in the darkened floor.

Tall, dark, and doubtlessly surrounded by his own security right now, a sanctuary of methodical movement within a crowd of confused Kanacon attendees. If there was any chance of finding her target, this was one of the best ones.

Wow, she must be pretty fucked up if she was thinking of her job even during what may straight up be a terrorist attack, huh?

Cecilia remained impassive to Karuu’s enthusiasm, instead taking a careful look at the map and mulling over the details slowly in her head. It appeared simple enough, at least. Kill the totems, then kill the monsters, and once everything’s cleared, head out to the boss and kill whoever’s there as well. It brought a small smile to her face at how their foes were going to be goblins and wolves, as if there was anyone who hadn’t grown tired of fighting those freaks after almost a month of facing them.

She twirled her spear a few times, the pole vibrating lightly in her hands, before flicking out to her inventory. It was the floor dungeon, and it would be stupid to hold back at this point. Three potions popped up in her hand, and Cecilia drank them each one by one, the emptied vials pixelating out of existence soon after. “Potion up,” the lancer said, turning to the others, “No point in saving resources now. Got more Greens and Yellows too, if any of you don’t have them in stock.”

As if to make good on her word, Cecilia pulled four more yellow vials, holding them between the digits of her left hand. “It’s free, this time.”

Jumping at light speed, the weight of Shun’s body was enough to force the gun away from Mari, two shots going awry as the Mastermind grunted in surprise. In that opening, the dark-skinned girl charged in as well, bursting forward as quickly as she could. Her acceleration wasn’t sufficient to reach the even half her speed, but with only a couple feet separating her and the muscle bound villain, it wasn’t necessary either.

Such distance though, was advantageous to him as well.

With his arm pushed slightly to the side by Shun, the Mastermind simply swung his gun arm back, sending the pixelating boy towards Mari. No one had any space at all to maneuver in the entrance of the bus, after all, and the two of them struck each other, before they both fell down the stairs and onto the cold, unforgiving concrete. The man readjusted his aim once more, pointing the gun in their direction.

“What to do, what to do…” he murmured. “Think you can do that move again, kid?”

As Minami scanned the area around her and decided on which dummies to rescue, a loud crash, followed by a meaty thump, sounded in her vicinity. It came from another student, one of the ones that chose to exchange numbers before the exam began. Apparently, all his efforts for communications were for naught, considering the extent of the injuries upon his body. Worse was the fact that he was flat out unconscious after whatever force sent him flying there.

And worst was the possibility that he might still be pursued by a villain after all of this.

What to do, what to do…the options just kept piling up.

Talking. So much talking. Did they think that no one noticed their gesticulations, that as long as they formed a vague circle, their conversations would go undetected? Yuuki let out another sigh as he mentally calculated the seconds that had passed in comparison to how fast they had left last time, before rubbing the back of his neck. Well, if they were gonna burn time like this, he had no need to hold back, right? Directing a slightly apologetic smile towards Aer, the blue-eyed backpacker stepped up to the cleaning woman and asked, ever so innocently, "Oh, um…by the way, where will you be doing the house cleaning? Just, you know, in case I wanna find you afterwards."

Fritzi looked up into the sky and tapped her foot. ”Hmmmm...” Her tail waved back and forth as she thought. ” Today, it's going to be one of Pepin's houses.” She grinned before placing her hands on her hips. ”It's not too difficult to find, they are the shortest houses in the Noble District! Kinda like trying to pick you out of all these people around here!” She reached out to pat Yuuki on the head. ”Just follow the main road between the Noble District and Cham, and we're going to be in one of those tiny houses on the street down the first or second left.”

“Pepin?” It was an unfamiliar name, but one easy enough to remember in the long-term. “Got it, Miss Fritzi. Hope we’ll see you soon then.” His ears burned slightly when she patted him on the head out of the blue. Geez, what was up with that? She was only slightly taller than him, and that was only because of her ears to begin with. He Dempsey rolled away before the wolfgirl could move onto hair-tousling, before following after Aer once more.

Nothing changed afterwards. Not really. Yuuki kept quiet to let Ashton take over the conversation, kept to himself, and did his best to recall what he had said in the previous iteration’s interrogation. Picked up the pace, just very slightly. Tried to gauge just how long it took for one to walk from the Golden Quarter to wherever Mono was. Kept an eye out for directions, streets, landmarks.

Thirty minutes. That was the maximum time frame they were operating in. If they died where they worked, it would be Pepin’s house. If they were injured and then died while seeking aid, it’d be around Donovan’s clinic. Twenty minutes then? No, fifteen to be safe. So how could he ensure his information was trusted?

Lost in his thoughts, Yuuki picked up the pace further, until he was walking a step or two in front of the person leading the group.

The wind, the sky, the incline and the decline. She was gone before monsters figured out whether or not they should attack, gone before sub-Level 10 players realized she was even there. Like a swallow, she sailed through the open fields between the Hill of Sorrows and the Endless Green, her long hair streaming behind her like a lilac mantle.

Some people would think of themselves as ‘late’. Others would be anxiously pushing themselves past the brink of exhaustion to show up on time. But as her long strides shot her through the landscapes of Genesis, Cecilia didn’t care for any of those things. The runner’s high and the euphoria that accompanied it, endorphins pumping through her virtual veins to light her electronic mind ablaze, was more than enough to quell any thoughts like that.

Karuu had messaged her a couple days back about the raid on the Floor Dungeon, and with such a big event happening, there was no way the Lancer planned on missing it…but she also wasn’t inclined to bother showing up to the briefing beforehand either. Strategy was fine. Tactics were fine. But they also meant having to micromanage the ego of manchildren, and there was no way in hell she was going to suffer through that.

A final Sprint and she could see the other players convening below, her chest rising and falling evenly as she sped up further, amber eyes now flickering about in search of her partymates. Thank god for Prome and Zks, really. Hair as white and fluffy as theirs was so easy to spot in a sea of black and browns. Slowing to a jog, then to a fast walk, Cecilia took a few seconds to touch up her appearance once more, blotting off sweat, rearranging her cloak, retying her ponytail, taking a drink out of her waterskin to clear her throat, before closing her eyes briefly to envision a facade.

A cool, competent beauty, dignified yet prideful.

“Karuu,” Cecilia said, nodding once at the Marauder. “Is everything in order? Have equipment and potions to last?”
