"Aye aye captain!" Malek answered Adrielle as his eyes looked to the ship of the pirate king. The mere presence of it always filled him with admiration, even if that admiration came with a bit of contempt. He knew Adrielle's tale and understood why she never allowed the Mermaid's Fortune to remain in port whenever the infamous ship appeared. And so, always respected her wishes when it came to this matter. There were those that would moan and groan but that's what Malek was there for. He watched as the last barrel made it onto the ship and took a deep breath, in and then out as if to prime himself for the moment.

Before he could issue a command, however, he watched a man come up from below deck and hastily make his exit off of the ship. Malek scowled before he saw who followed. Winifred… a sweet yet dastardly woman with the best cooking I've ever had on a ship. He gave her a nod and a smirk. His power of charm seeped out a bit from the action. Winifred sometimes helped with getting the weak ones off the ship, so he didn't mind when she scared someone off with her mysticism. His attention then returned to the rest of the deck and the task at hand.

"Ahoy, look at that eyesore! It's the pirate king's ship! All hands on! YOU! Get the lazy bastards out from below!" Malek roared and men moved. He looked around at all the moving parts working together. There were the old that fell right into the comfort of their duties and the new who threw all their energy and excitement into each task. "Captain at the helm! Ready the sails! Prepare to lift the anchor! If you're new on my ship, watch how the old do it and follow their lead. If you can't, get the hell off!" Malek ordered as he stopped beside Winifred. "What happened with that one? He seemed like one of the hardier sorts, but if you scared him away, I'm sure it was for good reason." Malek spoke in a voice that's volume was between booming and his normal conversational tone. He didn't look at Winifred as he addressed her. It wasn't to be intentionally rude, but rather he was watching for deficiencies and the lazy ones on deck. Most understood that he was constantly on the move. How he found the time to harass new crewmates was a mystery in itself.

Soruklithbaal recognized the sorcery that befell him almost immediately. Not because he had witnessed the summoning of the creature in his presence from time before now, but because of how he saw things in this world. With his vision relying on magic and not the eyes he once possessed in life, the dracolich had the ability to detect the life force of the living as well as magical energies. To Soruklithbaal, every element of magic had it's own presence and look to it. Demons however, often did not share the same magical abilities, and therefore appeared differently from individual to individual.

In this case, Soruklithbaal detected Sakura's unique magical essence. The beast immediately roared at the betrayal before building up its blue flames. The cloud-like creature threatened to snuff it out, but the dracolich persisted in concentrating its seemingly inevitable fire blast.

But then it caught wind of something...

The cloud-like creature managed to extinguish Soruklithbaal's built up blue flames before it could unleash it onto the forest. The dracolich roared and thrashed about trying to free itself from Sakura's creature. For now, Soruklithbaal would be distracted... He did have a part to after all.

FLASHBACK
Optional Read

Back in better times, Darius found himself behind the lens of his camera as he shot a picture of an array of mountain flowers off a dirt trail, he, his older brother John, and John’s girlfriend of four years, Erica were hiking on. Darius was the third wheel, but only because he had just started dating a woman he wasn't comfortable bringing around his brother just yet. Scaring her off by taking her on a double date with basically family might seem too fast for both her and Darius. But honestly, in the grand scheme of things, it almost didn’t matter The man’s relationships were fleeting at best.

“Flowers? Really? You got a supermodel couple right in front of you and you're taking pictures of flowers?” John teased with a smirk on his face.

“You can’t tell the view isn’t nice. We may not literally be on top of the world, but I sure as hell feel like it. Don’t worry, bro, I got this.” Darius said as he looked his brother in the eyes with assurance. He knew how important today was for him. This wasn’t just some run of the mill hiking trip. John was going to finally pop the question to Erica.

“Just don’t go and forget about us. Easy?”

“Easy!” Darius replied as the trio ventured up the trail. I love you bro, but fuck this hike. You couldn’t go to some fancy restaurant like a normal person? “I want to be doing something we both love to do.” But didn’t think about poor ol’ me. I guess I’ll pay him back at the wedding when I tell every embarrassing story I can muster up.

As Darius trailed behind the couple enjoying one another's company, something pricked at him mentally as he looked upon their backs. Was it envy? He raised his camera and snapped a candid photo of the two. He smiled weakly and then looked to his side. No one.

Several minutes passed before John trailed back to walk with his brother. John knew Darius could play the third wheel role well, but he didn't want to leave him completely out. Besides, he felt that he needed to talk to him about some things.

"I think I'm ready for some guy talk now. You know you should have invited that girl. I know you said it might seem like too much, but you gotta take risks sometimes man." John put a heavy hand on Darius' shoulder.

"Come on, I take risks. I started my own little business for crying out loud." Darius argued with a confident smirk. John mockingly nodded.

"Yeah that's true, but that's because you knew you could. Doesn't really count… Listen, you have so much potential bro, and you hold yourself back and I don't know if it's because you're sca-"

"I'm not scared!" Darius shrugged his brother's hand from his shoulder and raised his voice loud enough for Erica to turn around. There was a brief silence. "Just drop it." Darius stated as he used his head to motion John to go ahead to accompany Erica.

As much as he hated it, Darius knew John was right. As much as he hated being number two, he found comfort in not having many expectations. He didn't take risks.. he was safe. And that day, he watched his brother take the biggest risk he'd ever take. At the peak of the mountain, John proposed to Erica. The pictures were beautiful.

Malek looked over the list on the paper handed to him as he listened to Adrielle's opposition in the idea of ridding the Mermaid's Fortune of the kitten of a demihuman. Malek had never met with a new face on the ship in a positive light. Most proved their worth in due time, but that meant there were a few that didn't. The few that didn't, caused problems and problems led to things that Malek didn't like to think about when concerning the crew.

Upon noticing Aharuhn's presence, Malek let loose a low quiet grumble and kept his eyes on the paper in his hand. Malek could tolerate only so much of Aharuhn simply due to their incompatible natures. During times of leisure with rum in their bellies, Malek and Aharuhn could have an enjoyable time. Under normal circumstances they weren't fans of each other, then again Malek had few fans on the ship due to how hotblooded he made himself out to be. In his attempt to ignore Aharuhn's presence, something whizzed past his face from behind him.

Malek watched the thrown object bounce twice and land on the deck. He raised an eyebrow as he watched it gleam in the sunlight. Stepping forward and kneeling down, he grabbed the jeweled hairpin from the deck. He examined it between his fingers and shook his head with a scowl. Malek managed to turn his head just in time to see the culprit escorting the newcomer away to her bunk. Nur... I have something for that one. It’ll just have to wait. He stood back up with a sigh and moved to his captain's side to assist in accounting for the cargo coming aboard.

Adrielle's next words caused her first mate to raise his right eyebrow before he spotted her playful smirk. He lowered his gaze and chuckled. When his eyes met hers he nodded.

"Aye aye. I guess we'll need the entertainment once things get dull. It’s… good to see everyone in high spirits before we set sail, even you seem…" Malek sounded like he wanted to continue, but he furrowed brows as he spotted something. "Hey! That doesn't go there!" He shouted at two crew members carrying a large crate. Malek sighed while shaking his head. "Keep me sane, and I'll do the same for you, Nightingale." He smirked. It was a phrase that Malek said to his captain from time to time. The two had been close friends long before Adrielle became captain and Malek believes they’ve lived this long because they’ve never failed to support each other.

CRIMSON = O'Ner's Hallucination

50 people? What drives him? Umber questioned to himself. Jack kept calm in this situation, even when he took the time to behead his victim. Umber just studied the fellow with his eyes. Now the demon seemed indifferent as the man in front of him ran out of interest for Umber. 200 years had allowed Umber to see many things, and though this was new, it was one note. The origin of Jack’s derangement was peculiar, but the product was exactly the way it presented itself. The actions were expected and therefore lost their luster. Jack would prove useful, but Umber’s interest in him was exhausted.

Umber slowly turned his gaze to O’Ner who was attempting to use Jack in a scheme to fool the rebels that evaded the group of Aklenroth’s elite. The plan was well concocted, but not suitable for the likes of the man before them. Not even suitable for any man stumbled upon just minutes ago.

“General Faister...’ Umber addressed without looking at him. Before O’Ner’s eyes, he would suddenly see a hallucination of his true self standing between himself and Umber. O’Ner’s large skeletal body faced the female human form he now possessed with a cold stare. Umber still didn’t turn to face O’Ner. “Do you remember my words? I shall remind you… if you choose to take action… be sure it is the correct one. And why? I’m sure you remember why… You had a clever retort for that.” Umber’s head turned and faced O’Ner. With one finger, he tapped the top of the skull of O’Ner’s skeletal image before the bones seemed to explosively shoot in all directions. “This is not the move you should take. This human is indeed untested, but his first test should not be one with so much risk and responsibility. We will test him in time. For now, we bring him to Aklenroth… For a reward, he truly doesn’t even care for. Am I right, Jack? Tangibles do not satiate you, but perhaps Aklenroth can offer something more suitable to your needs.”

Umber did not know which of his two feelings were stronger at the arrival of the creature dubbing himself as "Jack," his embarrassment or his curiosity. Either way, both were subsiding with every passing second. Was it disappointment that now grew in the demon feelings?

No, it was not that. The man who claimed he was interested in killing his own was still someone he did not expect to see. Jack's thoughts and feelings reminded Umber of another project he had worked on… maybe a few projects if he was being honest with himself. The most intriguing thing about this man though… Is that Umber himself did not have a hand in his molding. So there are those who naturally become this way? My, my… Even after 200 years, life brings me interesting surprises. He glanced at Azriel once again before his eyes set back onto Jack.

"Love to partake? So calm is this lamb that approaches a group of butchers… Rabid, cannibalistic, or maybe just foolish… but meat…" Umber lifted the corpse a foot off the ground. "...is meat." Umber let the corpse fall limp onto the ground. He did not even care to torture the man. What is the fun of breaking a broken object or remodeling a work of art? "If it were only up to us… Or if it were up to me..." The demon began to let out a low menacing snicker. "Be grateful that our lord prefers you alive. You may have easily been delivered in the same state as the other two… Interesting find, but you're hardly a good keep for me."

Why couldn't it have been her? I suppose there is next time... Umber then turned to Xenelith who spoke to the abnormal minded creature. It seemed the Dark Elf wanted to know how useful the human could be. Using an actual human would prove to be more efficient than having O'ner morph into one. Despite having a broken mind, the man was authentic and would beat out a copy any day when it came to truly blending in. Now, Umber was curious about the answer to Xenelith's question. Perhaps Jack could still prove to be interesting after all.

Time: Late Morning
Location: A quiet stream, South of Orc Landing
Interaction with: Darius, Skar, and Myra @13org

Myra smiled as Darius pat her head. Even though that thing he was using above his chest appeared to be quite important to him, it did seem he was ok with it now. Myra didn't know if what remained of it would be of use to Darius, but the simple fact that he had patted her head and seemed to be a bit better was enough for her.
After all, he still had the smelly things he used on his feet and the rest of whatever those were. It wasn't like he had lost everything.

As Darius went back to the task of covering himself with the weird things, another thing immediately drew Myra's attention. Using the meat she had given her previously, Skar began making a fire. After a short moment, smoke started coming out, indicating she was successful in her task. Even though Myra knew what fire was, she didn't know how to do it and as such, she immediately dashed to where Skar was, curiously watching what she was doing. It did take a moment, but when the small fire she had made got big enough, she started putting the rest of the wood she had gathered above it. But the most interesting part for Myra was maybe the moment Skar got the meat, stuck on the end of a sharp blade thing she had on her waist and put it into the fire. The very moment she did, Myra started looking at her and then at the meat with a confused expression. Why didn't she just eat the meat? Maybe she didn't want it?

It wasn't until when the meat started getting cooked and letting off quite a good smell that Myra started to understand what Skar was doing. She was accustomed with eating raw meat and she loved boar meat due to it's flavor, but it was undeniable that the smell coming out of the piece of meat Skar had was making her really, really curious.

Looking at the piece of meat Skar was cooking, she looked back at the other piece of meat she had brought from the carcass back where she met Darius. Looking at it and then to Skar, she quickly searched the ground for a sharp stick or something she could use. When she did, she cut a piece of her meat, stuck on the other end of the sharp stick she had found and began imitating Skar, putting the meat into the fire as well. While she did wanted to try and taste what Skar was doing, she didn't want to use all her meat, in case she didn't really like the outcome.

"Well would you look at that. No one would ever know you two were trying to kill each other a few hours ago. Now you're cooking together… Well sort of." Darius said before stepping towards the stream.

"Darius. I have armor. It is better than cloth." Skar motioned her head to the torn shirt Darius now carried in his hand. "We will need to be strong in Orc Landing. Need protection. Magic is…" Skar let out a low grunt. "Use what you have as deadly weapon. Use arrows, be deadly. Use sword, be deadly. Use magic… be deadly Darius. Train. Peacemaker has your armor." Skar said as she continued to cook her meat on the fire. She smirked at the sight of Myra. Darius nodded as he felt the orc knew best.

"Might as well level up while I'm here. I'll grab the armor in a bit. Darius said calmly as he reached out towards the stream in an attempted to raise some of the water from it. A smirk quickly appeared on his face as droplets started to rise. It wasn't much of anything, but it was magic. He could use magic! "I still wish I had fire though."

Malek’s watchful eyes scanned every face that walked upon the ship, his eyebrows were furrowed and his arms crossed. If you wanted to find the most unapproachable pirate on the Mermaid’s Fortune, there was no need to look any further. Despite his outer demeanor, on the inside, he felt excited to be embarking on a new voyage. For the past seven years, his captain and close friend, Adrielle Draegan had satiated his desire for adventure, and if it weren't for keeping up appearances, the grump would have a cheerful smile spread across his face.

"Hmm." Malek unconsciously let out as his sights locked onto a feline demihuman that had walked onto the ship. He raised his right eyebrow, silently questioning what he was seeing with his own eyes. No way… Pickings can’t be this slim. He shook his head as he already predicted the new crewmate’s demise. The sea is much too cruel for this one... Malek then mumbled something softly under his breath before his eyes shot open upon hearing Adrielle’s raised voice. His scowling face returned as he shot a look at the lost kitten of a woman. Many on the deck instinctively turned their attention to Malek, knowing that the first mate would act soon after the captain’s complaint.

Malek stomped over to Katurah, looking as if he was going to assail the woman with how quickly he moved across the ship. His aquamarine eyes met her gold ones as he sneered in disgust. “NUUUURRRR! Get this useless landlub-” Malek leaned in close. His face was inches from hers. "Not landlubber… Worm! Get this worm to her bunk. Now, Nur!” Malek ordered harshly. Nur was currently his go-to person for doing pretty much any task that needed to be done. Whether she actually did these tasks was another story. Malek gruffed as he walked passed Katurah and to his captain. “Give it here Nightingale, I’ll handle the rest of the shipments. And give me the word, and we can toss her off the Mermaid’s Fortune. I know her type. She gets people killed y’know?”

Umber arrived on the scene just in time to witness Xenelith’s pets partake in an unfortunate human’s flesh. As the demon’s form floated silently above the ground, he surveyed the area looking upon it with uninterested eyes. Elsea was not here. His sights stopped at the head adorned on Azriel’s hip. He would smile if he could. Mmmm… Quick as always my Azriel. Despite his apparent enthusiasm, Umber felt a hint of disappointment. Missing the chance to physically and mentally torture a human, especially one that seemed to have so much… passion. Even now, the emotions lingered like a lasting aroma.

“Your method is effective... but it lacks the entertainment I crave… Mmm... There is another I seek.” Umber’s attention shifted to the risen vines before looking about the rest of the area. “A human woman… filled with wild anger.. rage… Much like you were as a child. To tame something like that again… I would be absolute...” Umber cut himself off and abruptly turned to his left. Demon? Umber stared through the trees. The dark elf commander’s beasts would likely react to the presence of whatever was on the approach. It was as malevolent as himself, a presence mirroring his own. “We have company. Someone at our 9 o'clock.” Umber informed as his feet planted to the ground and he faced the direction of the approaching being. He focused his speech to it and ONLY IT. “There is only death here… Approach if that’s what you seek.” Umber was sure it was a demon more than anything, but its desires, its emotions were unlike any demon he had encountered on the mainland… He glanced at Azriel and then back in the direction of the approacher. As outrageous as it seemed, this thing was possibly more violent in nature than his protege. It... rivaled his own cruelty. The very idea made him wait in silence. No one else would know Umber’s inner thoughts and feelings, but if they had, it may have shaken them to the core with how disturbed he was by this thing.

For the first time in a long time, Umber felt the uneasy creeping feeling known as anxiety.
