A Tale of Songs and Knights

Backstory

A long long time ago the world was a peaceful and serene place, life was good and wars or plagues never cursed the land. Until it was plunged in darkness when the Goddess of Strife overthrew the other members of the Heavenly Host, the sons and daughters of the Creator. It is said that she used the power of her songs, being the most beautiful singer between all the gods, she used her music to summon terrible beasts known today as Dissonances and slay the other gods before unleashing her own children upon the world of mortals.

In an attempt to preserve their own creation, the gods reunited their last remnants of life force and imparted some mortals with the power of summoning legendary creatures of themselves through the power of music, known today as Spirits, to fight back the Dissonances.

After a long and arduous war, the forces of Goddess of Strife finally were defeated and she was sealed away to never be seen again. Even so, the Goddess' power is so great that the land is still plagued by Dissonances even today, to fight back this threat and defend the land special schools were created to train the next generations of Song Knights, the only ones that can wield the power to summon Spirits and bind them to their service.

Plot

The story will begin during the 243rd Liberation Festival on Arpeggio, the capital of the Bach Empire. The festival is a week long series of holidays when people celebrate the defeat of the Goddess of Strife with religious, military and artistic events. All player characters will be students of one of the Song Knight academies of the world, who congregate annually for the Battle Royale, a tournament to choose the best Song Knights in the land.

Setting

The story is set on the land of Da Capo, an insular continent roughly the size of Europe where three countries control about 80% of the usable lands (about half of the mainland area), the rest being divided between numerous city states and non-claimed territory. The rest of the continent is taken by vicious mountain ranges, deep forests and overran by amok Dissonances, being completely unsuitable for occupation by human, however members of the Elven people make their homes at such places.

When it comes to technology, Da Capo is mostly around the level of the Renaissance, however there's the addition of key pieces of Magitech like long range communication devices (too big to carry), vehicles and an everyday analogous of electrical power. All of them powered by Crystals, which are crystallized fragments of magic obtained from the Ruins, which are places where remnants of the Old Civilization from before the days of the Great War. Needless to say, such places house countless dangers and powerful Dissonances.

Partial Map of the Da Capo continent.

Bach Empire: Controls most of the colder and heavily forested lands of the north of the continent, having about 50% of the usable land under their banner. They value order and are a very militarist people, with a penchant for xenophobia, heavily distrusting the Elves. Primary colors: Black and Purple. Academy: Imperial Song Knights' Academy of Cadenza.

Wolfgang Alliance: A coalition of several states united under the same banner for military and economic interests. They are a flimsy union that has many different views of life and are led by a Council of Representatives of each of the minor states that form the Alliance. They hold control over the Southwestern lands, an area dotted of large plains and marshland, corresponding to roughly 20 % of the usable lands. Primary Colors: Green and White. Academy: United Academy of Song Knights' of Crescendo.

Chopin Republic: The smallest of the major states, they control the remaining 10% of the usable lands, having most of their territory at the East taken by craggy rocky terrain rich in unexplored mineral resources. They have the most open minded culture, valuing individual liberty and rights and the most advanced education in the land. While officially a republic, their Head of State is a member of the former ruling Royal Family, while the government is headed by a Prime Minister, the chief of an elected Parliament. Primary Colors: Blue and Yellow. Academy: Grand Academy of Song Knights' of Capella.

Elves: The wielders of the Primordial Songs, it's said that elves had the power of summoning even befre the Great War came upon the land. They are said to be a pure and beautiful race that makes their home in isolate forests, within deep valleys where no man ever set foot. Under normal circumstances they do not interact with outsiders, thereby they became legends over time. These days many people laugh at the mere mention of elf sightings.

Characters

Your characters will be students at any of the three before mentioned Song Knight academies. Since their initiation is complete everyone will already have control of their specific Spirits, life long companions and servants that share a bond, formed by music, with an specific Song Knight. Song Knights are also capable of employing magic based on songs, either by voice or any other instrument, though said magic is limited to effects linked to the elements upon which their Spirit is aligned.

Furthermore, all song knights are trained in some form of combat, either armed with swords, bows, guns, spears, etc, or not. Many of them also have complimentary skills, based from their walks of life before joining an academy, academic knowledge, athletic skill, survival lore, or even something as simple as cooking or cards games.

Spirits

Mysterious beings that are summoned the Aether upon reality by the power of a Song Knight's Summoning Aria and are bound to their summoner by their own free will. Other than this fact all Spirits are as different as the Knights they serve, varying in size, shape, intelligence, disposition and elemental affinity. These parameters are used to classify a Spirit within a scale of Ranks, from E to A, the closer a Spirit is to A rank, the more powerful they are. There's also rumors of Spirits that go beyond this scale and are classified as EX Rank, but the means to summon such a powerful creature are unknown.

Elemental Affinity: A Spirit is aligned to one, or two of the following elements, being immune to the same elements as they are composed and weak against opposing elements. For this reason, a Spirit can't be aligned to two opposing elements (e.g.: Fire and Water).

Fire x Water
Air x Earth
Water x Fire
Earth x Air
Light x Dark
Dark x Light

@Caits

I have a feeling that Cassandra might disapprove of Eris' next actions... a lot of them. I'm already giving a heads up on this because it may look like is out of the blue later, but she's seriously riding the battle high and thinking that Cassandra is trying to chain her.

In a way, Eris is finally being the blood thirsty person that she's so posed to be since she knows that there's a chance of dying for real or conversely of killing other players IRL which is why she's jumping head first on the fray. Or the fact that Cassandra (or anyone else at this point) knows that Eris killed or seriously injured six persons that morning and has a knife with her at this very moment.

In other words, I'm telling that Eris may look like she's going OOC from now on, but she's just showing her true colors. While she still likes Cassie without a doubt the recent developments made some over her views shift and bad things may happen between them.

This is just a despair disclaimer to clarify Eris' IC behavior.

Anyway, see ya.

Eris sighed, apparently Cassandra still hadn't noticed that this was a real life and death situation, but then again, it wasn't like Eris expected her to. Cassandra had not gone through the experiences Eris had, she didn't had the training or even strength to defend herself. So... why was it so hard to let Eris be the one protecting her? I didn't mattered, anyway, Eris had to concentrate in both keeping Cassandra alive and shutting off whatever plans Corpse Collector had in mind.

"Fine, Cassandra, just mind that if you do something unwise, I might not be able to save you. 'He who is prudent and lies in wait for an enemy who is not, will be victorious.'" Eris first warned Cassandra in a personal way and then said, quoting Sun Tzu's The Art of War, in her characteristic philosophic ways. Taking Alex's words into consideration, Eris replied, "I don't plan to kill her, just protect Moon Rider. Eclipse Princess can deal with the cannon fodder while Moon Rider takes on the Outlaw in a one on one fight, I bet even Corpse Collector's hacks can't allow her to bet Moon Rider in a straight up fight, otherwise... why would a known solo player need to assemble and army of thieves and scum?"

"Either way, I take it that we'll be safe here. I would be on the look out if you left public spaces until this situation has been sorted out. now, if you'll excuse me." Eris closed her eyes as she finished her speech, concentrating on the dated login process, but...

...there was something wrong this time.

Welcome, Eclipse Princess!

You have leveled up to [Lvl 5] and received a special gift from [*** ***]. Have fun!

"Huh? What happened to my other equipment this is way more high tier than my other armor. And... a Lvl UP after a bugged Dungeon, this seems too much like an exploit. But, this sender, could it be?" Eclipse Princess stared at herself amazed at the change she had undergone, this equipment was... too much like something SHE would have used, yet it's obvious that said theory was impossible or at least based on some serious bending of rules. Not that any of this mattered now, little boost was more than welcome as Eclipse Princess could testify merely looking bellow her, to the walls of the Black City and Corpse Collector's army that was only just waiting the sign to charge the Ebony Strikers' citadel.

"It seems our positions were reset to the respective Guild Halls of our Avatars , or so I think. I wonder where Cassandra will be when she logs in? Anyway..." Eclipse gave a couple experimental swings of the massive lance she had received, despite the sheer size and the feeling that it could crush a boulder of Eclipse's size with a single swing, she could brandish it easily with a single handle. "I might as well like this. If it was really you, know that I'm thankful." Eclipse though as she hopped off the wall and walked to Moon Rider's throne room, a smile greater than any ever before gracing her lips at the prospect of a real life or death battle was actually exciting her to untold levels as did her next action.

"Moon Rider, Black King, you should know who I'm at this point, but let me say that I'm here to help, no I'm here to join the Ebony Strikers." Eclipse said as she walked down the walls that she knew so well and knelt before Moon Rider, "The recent circumstances of which I'm sure your representative already informed you, convinced me that it's the most certain thing to do. Furthermore I'm sure you'll need an extra hand in dealing with the scum outside... you can sign me in for that."

Upon listening to CC's plan, Absinthe flew back to the Blue Bomber at full speed... in fact, she was going so fast that she rammed her face against the tank's lid, taking a chip out of her heath bar. "Titania-sama, Titania-sama, Titania-samaaaaaaa!" Absinthe cried out of the top of her lungs.

"We have an emergency, the... the... the Corpse Collector, she kidnapped Kitty Kat and is forcing her to help kill Moon Rider-sama. We need to go help, come now, Titania-sama!" Absinthe yelled in panic, it looked like that Mercury Titania would have to... calm her subordinate before they could go and help the Black Guild, if tha was what the Blue King wished to do, to say the truth.

Not too far away from the kitchen where the torrent of bubble spiders was rising up even now, the prisoners would find a few black feathers scattered about the floor. I looked like they belonged to raven that was perched atop a chandelier, cawing ominously until someone... anyone noticed it and then flying off to beak at another door as if it wanted them to open it.

Inside the room a girl with long platinum blond (or maybe white) hair was hanging, in a crucified pose, on the wall opposite to to the door. Fine chains, apparently made of partially tarnished silver, held her body of a little more than five feet height and a, seemingly, fragile build to the engraved wooden wall by her joined ankles and spread wrists, along her neck to bend forward limply under the weight of her head.

Even more raven feathers were scattered about her feet, though no bird other than the one from before was to be seen inside the alcove who, aside from the bizarre decoration of one of its walls, looked just like any unassuming antique reading room. A fireplace (still lit) on the wall to the girl's left, lots of books on the shelves lining the wall to her right, a comfy armchair over a supple carpet, with a side table holding an ash tray that had apparently been used recently, a few portraits adorned the wall besides the door and, as a last touch a bust of Pallas hung over the fireplace, between an antique clock and a dated globe.

The crow perched atop the bust of the Goddess of Old, over the shadows of the fireplace it's unnatural look was quite evident, as the crow cawed, flashing two way too smart pair of eyes to the group, at the same time as the girls lips curled silently in her unconsciousness. What was it that she was trying to say? Perhaps a word, who could say?

"Never... more...?"

God's Shattering

As Jessi got back to his feet and tried to help Fei while sproutting a witty remark he would find the looming figure of Tegonay waiting for them, ready to smash the Lancer's ribcage with the pummel of his massive sword, Arondight -The Black Blade of the Lake-, following with a kick aimed at Fei's chest. How the hulking armored knight got there without any of them noticing was anyone's guess, but Jessi's enhanced senses would let him get a feeling of something wrong, something not right about Tegonay. There was no signs of life at all coming from the armor, no breath, no pulsation or digestion, no muscles tensing or bones grinding, in fact even the knight's voice as he said "Pardon me, Milady, but this mission was handed upon myself by Lord Yggdrasil, you posses no autorithy to dismiss me. A child's tantrum will not be put before the will of the Imperium!" seemed to ring hollow inside his helm. The meaning of this was for Jessi and Fei to devise.

On his part, the Dark Knight would continue the assault by spinning his body using the momentum of the kick to smash Jessi's side with the flat of his blade, just after saying to his peer,"You sure understand, don't you? A knight's duty always comes first. Our oath is our honor and life and I sworn to follow Lord Yggdrasil to the depths of hell and back, if so commanded." Following that, the ground bellow Tegonay's feet shattered and burst as the dark knight used all his strength to do a standing somersault and try to crush Fei once and for all, though as soon as he was about to connect...

"What sort of witchery is this!?" Tegonay exclaimed, as an aura of silver flames threw him off balance and frced the knight to retreat, giving Jessi and Fei the precious time they would need to plot a counter-attack.

Meanwhile, Vassagus, the Mercenary Sorcerer, used Letty's momentary distraction to aim a spell on her position. "From the pits of hellfire, what I call forth is cremating flames: Taika!" Vassagus said while drawing a reverse pentagram inlaid in a magic circle in the air and then touching the ground, causing a ten feet wide pillar of dark gray flames to erupt from the ground where Letty stood. To make things harder for the raven dressed woman the last of the wyverns cornered her from behind, lunging with blood lust on the one who got the first of them killed.

"You should pay more attention to your surroundings, Lady. There's more than the Imperial love birds on this arena, after all." Vassagus said in his typical raspy voice, while holding another spell at the ready, a magic shield, just in case Letty tried anything funny. That is, if the raven hadn't been turned into roasted chicken by his previous spell.

Things weren't much better for the Arcadia exploration party, despite the introduction of an unexpected helper and everyone's efforts, it looked like the Metalodactilus' attack had damaged the ship beyond any hope of salvaging. Tori's efforts coupled with the mysterious helper's, well... help and Alex and the twins assault on the flying lawnmower managed to bring the beast down, but only to have it crash on the ship, sending it in a barely controlled spin until it got smashed against the nearest flying island.

Sometime later...

"Pfft! Pfft!" Sienna and Linea coughed, spitting large amounts of water from the, seemingly underground, pool the airship hit on it's downfall, the Metalodactilus was nowhere to be found, which earned a sigh from Linea, even so their priorities were others now. "Hey, everyone! Are you there?" Sienna yelled as they began to search the ship's debris. "Indeed, is everyone unharmed?" Linea called in as high a voice as she could, while taking the time to look are them and take in the details of the place they landed.

"Oneesama, I believe we are inside some form of temple, though the maker is unknown to me." The quiet Beastkin said as her animal-like eyes canned the dark and damp cave, noticing what looked like lines and inscriptions on the walls, some of them with figures that looked like planets and stars. The stone blocks composing the old damp walls were placed in a way that the spaces between the formed lines that were akin to electric circuits. A low, machine-like hum came from the depths of the ruins, barely audible over the sound of the running water that encompassed all the visible parts of the ruins, pouring from the cracks between the stones or from the high ceiling that seemed to be taken by some for of plant, most likely the roots of a gigantic tree.

While the Aquarian twins searched for their companions one doubt lasted on the minds... Where in the world were they?

"A girl gotta have her secrets, you two know it, don't? Also, it's alright Chenny-boy, I'll wait until you talk to your boss. If he likes the relic I can sell it on a discount, since we are party members, or is it not?" Mikoto said while drawing both Chen and Ruxen on a forced hug with a strength that betrayed her size, before pointing to to the interior of the forest. "Alright, we have a relic to find, who's with me?"

And so, the brave journey of the Peddler Witch, Mikoto Kanzaki, and her goons through the dangers of Rivenwood began. What would be of them? Not even the Jester himself knows.
