Helio grimaced a little at Nym as he offered up the hand of the fallen elf. The isolated limb gave him a sense of deja vu he really did not want. Once upon a time, he would have screamed at the sight of someone getting eaten alive. It somehow felt as if it was something he had seen often. "No, no. Uh. You go ahead and get that protein in, Nym." He told him, waving the demihuman off to finish his meal. Nym went on to thoroughly enjoy the scene of blood in the air. "If you think that's a good high, you should try mixing ubara and-"Helio began to say, but let his words falter as he noticed Lizzie join them, announcing that the victory was in reach. She made her way below the deck and it seemed that Nym was going to do the same. "Slow down, darling! Let us catch up!"He called after Lizzie. Helio's wings slowed their movements as he let himself fall, his feet hitting the wood with a thud.

Just as he went to follow, his transmission bracelet began to vibrate on his wrist. Helio stared at it. Bastian wasn't one to call out of the blue. He held down the button and felt his breath stop short upon seeing the translucent screen of the teal-haired fairy before his eyes. Her frightened expression made him clench his fists. "Faye."He breathed at the same time she had said his name. He reached his hand toward the screen as if he could do something. Someone was moving toward her. "Faye! Faye run!" He cried in panic. The screen zapped away as quickly as it had appeared. His pupils dilated as he watched a hand go over her mouth. He began jamming at the button, desperately trying to call her back, but no one answered. "Fucking hell!"

He groaned and glanced at the ladder. Helio knew he couldn't abandon his crewmates, but they had to finish this up fast. Then he had to beg them to change course for Roshmi. Otherwise, he was going to have to figure out a way to sustain flight for a really long distance. Though part of him had given up on himself, this war, and everything going on... He wasn't going to give up on Faye. If he couldn't save his brother, he'd save the love of Echo's life. Helio hastily made his way down the ladder prepared to get this over with as fast as possible.

Sophie had looked up from her position in the pool at the sound of a bizarre, layered voice. Her smile faded as they spoke. There was a person captured in the hands of … monsters? She bit her lip with rising anxiety as it introduced itself as a demon named Pride. A scream caught in her throat and she climbed out of the pool and forward toward the broadcast as if she could stop what then occurred. Her pupils dilated and she covered her mouth as she witnessed the human be torn. She wanted to tear her gaze away but she felt frozen.

The sheer fear that the poor person must have felt broke Sophie’s heart. She couldn’t imagine the pain he was feeling. It was an agonizing few moments. No one deserves to die like that. How could anyone want to do that..? She knew she was going to hear that human’s screams in her dreams at night for weeks. Maybe months. Sophie couldn’t get over how awful she felt for them. That was what was coming for them? For her? Caelan? Jomari? Her knees unbuckled as she lowered to the ground and buried her face in her palms, crying in terror and shock.

Yuka frowned when she was set down but stood back nonetheless. Even though it had been obvious what was about to happen, she still leaped high into the air, eyes wide with surprise at the crack of the lightning bolts. A grin crossed her face as her face and she giggled at her own fear. She sat herself down on the floor pretzel-legged as Koldar started speaking soon after Xavier’s talent show.

She tilted her head. He was really going far with this whole prince lie, stating that he was not worthy due to abandoning his kingdom and whatnot. At first, she wondered why he would say that, but then she realized it was probably some next-level thinking. If he acted like he was all humble and honest, then the bird boy would lap up the bullshit. He’s smart for sure. I love a man who’s quick on his feet! She sure hoped the Commander was going to pick the latter option as if they went to his siblings, they’d obviously know he wasn’t their dead prince

That was when the cast sphere started up. Yuka’s glance flickered to it quickly as some strange creature appeared, yammering about as he had a human captive. She scrambled to her feet and put her hands over Xavier’s eyes as they started to rip the human apart. However, her eyes stayed glue to the broadcast, her expression simply slightly curious. ” Well. What was that thing?”She asked once it ended. She moved her hands away from Xavier’s eyes once it was over.

It seemed Augus was willing to help them under a few conditions. She decided to let “Prince Orias Biren” keep up his charade and answer the bird. She simply tilted her head over Xavier’s shoulder to ask him, “Are you alright?”
Kazumin & Anastasia

“No way would I do that!”Anastasia exclaimed and took Kazumin’s hands with a giggle, “You’re my new friend!”She took the initiative and led him enthusiastically to the dance floor. She paused to comment on the previous statement as it had been lingering in her mind, “Oh, and you’re telling me about that liquor! They put out this stupid wine and stopped bringing out the good stuff a few years ago. I’m convinced they’re hiding it from me somewhere after what I did at my brother’s birthday party. ”

She pointed suddenly at the woman near the attendant near the wine and spoke intensely, “See that broad? …She’s to blame. Her name’s Helga. She hides the whisky from me. “ The woman made a face and glanced around her area. Helga finally gestured to herself, perplexed. Anastasia narrowed her eyes at her, whispering to him, “Look at her playing dumb. The fiend!” She stuck her tongue out at Helga whose eyes widened in further confusion.

He let out a relieved sigh as his nerves were somewhat shot at the moment and didn’t need another woman crying on him. Being told that she considered him a friend brought a grin back to his previously dejected face.” I’ve made one new friend tonight at least.” His chuckle cut short upon being pulled onto the dance floor; now it was his turn being pulled along and it was just the thing needed to keep from feeling sorry for himself. As there was nothing he can do about Crystal for now so there was no point in fretting over it.

What Anastasia said next left him looking appalled before turning his gaze to this Helga she pointed out to.” The absolute audacity of that woman. Booze is meant to be shared, not coveted.” Shaking his head in distaste at how the dastardly Helga went so far as to hide her whiskey even while her whispered comments brought a smirk to his lips.” A fiend indeed. I know a horrid hag that takes whatever vodka or scotch I’m lucky to get my hands on and pour them down the sink in front of me.” He whispered back after leaning close with his attention kept on Helga, his eyes lowered suspiciously.” I bet the fiend and hag are in cahoots and actively work to ruin fun for others.” The cowlicked blonde finished whispering with a nod only to start snickering.

Anastasia gasped. ”Vodka! Scotch! Oh my God! She sounds like an absolute villain. Where did you find such a horrible hag? ”She questioned as she began to lead him into dancing.

”You think there is a legion of liquor coveting fiends right under our noses in Caesonia?” She then nodded firmly as if she had convinced herself by her own question, ”Yes, yes there must be. Despicable! “ However aghast she may have sounded, the corners of her lips had twitched as she struggled to keep a serious face. ” We should start an army of…. blondes to counter theirs!” She poked his cowlick. ”For we are superior and the only ones who can save the kingdom!”

The hag is my etiquette teacher, unfortunately. As if torturing me with that deadly stick I mess up wasn’t enough.” Were he not covered up in this stuffy suit she and any other would see the myriad of bruises covering his flesh even now, the fresher ones still stinging raw. Turning his attention back to his dance partner; listening to her tell of a possible conspiracy of vile liquor fiends to which he followed up with a quick motion of his feet having the two spin on the spot.” My gods! You could be onto something there.” He exclaimed after doing so while trying to keep a serious expression of his own though hardly did any better than his dance partner.

The small grin widened upon having his cowlick flicked where it bounced with fervor from his agreeing nods.” Indeed. An army is needed to defeat such a dastardly cult. And I already know a fellow blonde drinker to recruit.” Continuing to whirl around with his fellow blonde ally, eventually motioning in Thea’s direction after spotting her.” Truly, we blondes need to unite lest the kingdom become dry and devoid of joy.

Kazu prepared himself to continue, but finally broke and started laughing even as they kept whirling about.” Haaah… sorry about that but I couldn’t hold it in any longer.” Exhaling a huff through his nose trying to catch his breath, thankful for the dance otherwise he might have broken into a proper fit of laughter.

Anastasia’s expression had fallen slightly and briefly in reaction to his first statement. She was uncertain if that little tidbit about him getting hit with a stick was part of the charade or not. Anastasia could only hope. She then shook her head as if shaking away a bad memory. His joyful joking had allowed her to easily put the smile back on and forget about it.

It was a pleasant surprise to see him point out Lady Thea, someone she ran into often at the parties she sought out. If they knew each other, then she felt very secure in her selection of a new friend tonight. Anastasia blew a kiss to the fellow blonde party girl, giggling.

She could not hold the charade either, bursting into laughter as well a moment after he did. ” That’s okay. I suppose we should introduce ourselves anyway. My name is Anastasia. Annnd you?”

Still in the midst of recovering from laughing when he saw the way she blew a kiss to Thea leaving him wondering what silly and amusing crackpot theories the three of them could come up with together while sharing drinks.” Mhm, It is high time we properly introduced ourselves.” Once more shifting to have the two twirl around as he received her name.” And I’m Kazumin. I am most grateful and delighted to meet you, Lady Anastasia and thankful for the laugh you have given me.” Shaking his head along with an amused chortle.” Normally I’m the one making others laugh as it's rare for me to be the one needing cheering.” Though he knew that if anyone truly needed cheering up it was Lady Crystal, but for now such a task would have to go to someone else. Taking a deep breath first then dismissed the thought, not wishing to dwell on the depressing ordeal.” And I must ask, but do you know lady Thea, perhaps?

Anastasia was quite pleased to be twirled as she listened to Kazumin introduce himself, ”Oh wow! Great name. Kazumin. Kazoo in. Haha. Anytime for a laugh! ” She repeated his name in amusement. She considered the fact he had called her Lady Anastasia. It would be a lousy thing to lie about who she was to her new friend, so she decided that she had to tell him. She didn’t fault him for not identifying her as her own parents often acted as if she was not part of the royal lineup. Though, she felt reluctant as she was afraid he might treat her differently. Perhaps she better get in another fun twirl in case. ” Yes. I know her. She’s a sweetheart! I see her often since the same people always turn up at these things every time… Can you twirl me? Please!” In case of reluctance, she pulled out her puppy dogs eyes for the second time tonight.

The way she said Kazoo in had him raising a brow curiously.” Well that’s certainly a first. Kazoo..well if you want to call me that then feel free though it's only fair I get to call you by nickname too.” pursing his lips with a mock expression of deep thought as he peered at her face.” I want to say Ana, but that’s too obvious…I’d say you look more like a… Ani.” Kazu said with a smug little grin.”She does give off that sweetheart vibe. I do hope she is doing well after that..” Trailing off having decided not to say anymore as he did not want to risk ruining this pleasant mood. Thankfully Ani had carried on with a request to twirl her while hitting him with those adorable puppy dog eyes only to give a cheeky scoff in return.” Good try, but every one of my sisters pulled that trick on me all the time back home so I am immune to your powers of cuteness… though I will twirl you…if you twirl me too!” And with that he lifted her right arm up high with her hand held above her head and with a small flick of his wrist twirled her around on the spot.

Anastasia smiled wide, excited about the nickname he bestowed her. She could recall someone calling her Annie before and she had always thought it was cute and straight to the point. As lovely as the name Anastasia was, it was often a mouthful. “Ani sounds so cute!”She practically squealed. Her expression fell immediately when he started to tell her that her cuteness had failed. No twirl??She thought in terror, only to find that all was right in the world and she indeed was receiving a twirl.

”Whee!”She spun around, her pink dress billowing out and fanning around her. Right after she completed her exciting twirl, she began to attempt to twirl him. There was a technical issue as he was quite a bit taller than her. Nonetheless, she got on her tippy toes to lift his hand as high as she could and gave a weak flick of her wrist to twirl him back. Once the mission was complete, a mischievous grin formed. ”... Wanna do that again?”

Pleased to see that she enjoyed the nickname he bestowed upon her and to the point of getting a happy squeal followed by her stating it to be cute.” I’m honored to see you so thrilled for the name I have beseeched upon you after putting all my brain power into it.” He responded with a playful wink then moved to twirl her about which got a childlike whee out of the high-spirited lady. Now it was his turn to get a twirl and as expected proved difficult due to the height difference and to make it easier he willingly bent his knees then gave a bit of push of his legs to get that extra bit of force to make up for Ani’s slight lacking of strength. In doing so, it allowed him to twirl about in place albeit a tad awkwardly though Kazu did not care as he spun about with a joyful whee of his own.

After a few spins the laughing blonde came to a stop; paying the onlookers judging glances no mind. All that mattered was that they were having fun and enjoying themselves.” About time we guys got the chance to twirl for once.” For a moment the room was spinning, likely thanks to the wine and several turns he just did but it seemed they weren’t done with twirling quite yet as he saw that mischievous grin Ani was sporting.” Again? Well I don’t mind…you do seem to have something in mind.” Eyeing her suspiciously for a moment then gave a shrug of his shoulders.” But you seem trustworthy so go ahead, twirl me.

” Everyone deserves the chance to twirl.”Anastasia agreed. She reached her arm up to twirl him then paused. She took both his hands instead and let her body fall back a bit as she started to move her feet to pull them in a circle so they could both spin at the same time. Guests around them were grimacing and moving out of the way of the spinning duo. The music had already stopped at this point and people were confused. She was able to keep it going for an impressive amount of time.

But eventually, she did get so dizzy that she let go and stumbled back, practically falling back onto the floor. She laid her head back against the shiny ball floor, giggling despite feeling quite nauseous. ” That was fun!” The ceiling was spinning above her and she could not bring herself to budge. Anastasia wondered if it was okay for her to just lounge here for a few minutes.

That I wholeheartedly agree with.” Kazu agreed in return as he waited expectantly to be twirled. Anastasia, however, had a different idea in mind and soon found both hands grabbed then watched as she leaned back until their hands were pulled taut between the two. Next thing he knew he was spinning along in a wide circle with her, the action forcing those nearby to quickly move out of the way of the giggling pair.

Everything was a dizzying blur and all his qualms that occurred today were forgotten. Right now, the only thing he thought about was enjoying this moment with his newest friend.

And without warning, Ani had let go of his hands causing the two of them to fall back leaving the two of them sprawled on their backs. He didn’t even notice landing or the faint dull ache in his back for the thrilling laughter overtook every sensation until he was lying there panting.

Gazing up at the ceiling as the last of his laughter died down only to find the room much more quiet than expected. Blinking, he realized the music stopped.” Hah..looks like the dance is…or has been over?” Uncertain of how long exactly as they were too busy spinning. Using his arms to push and prop himself up to aim a wide grin at Ani.” Man, that was a blast! I had a lot of fun. Thank you for the dance, Ani….really, I appreciate it so much.

Anastasia smiled and waved from her spot on the floor, dazed, ”Of course! Keep a smile on your face, Kazoo! See you later at the educational study group!”

Anastasia's eyes had been closed as she swirled around, pausing only when she heard a loud female voice. She glanced over and watched Lady Crystal Damien run away from a well-dressed blonde man with a very tasteful cowlick. The girl was in tears and he did not look all that happy either. Lady Crystal really did not attend these events often, however, she had not forgotten her existence. Anastasia recalled that she had always been a nice girl. Perhaps maybe a little sensitive now that she had not been out much. From the man's reaction, it did not seem he meant to upset her.

That was rough.

The blonde man moved off the dance floor mid-song, his face in his hands. She immediately ran over to the man and pranced in front of him, "Hey big boy!"She exclaimed with a smile, looking up at the depressed Kazumin,"The song isn't over yet! Wanna dance with me?" She offered her hands out. "We can always just swing around in circles if you are depleted of your life force. I have not drunk a thing yet so I swear I will not puke on you."

As she was standing there awaiting his reply, a third joined them. A man in expensive wear and a black mask approached them. Anastasia's attention was stolen briefly as he pushed an envelope against her torso. She took it and watched as he walked away without another word. Oh Marek. I wonder who that even was that you sent here to deliver your invitations. You do love the drama of it all, don't you? Unceremoniously, she ripped the envelope open and held the letter up above her head to read it.

Oh no. I almost forgot... I shouldn't go. I told Wystan I wouldn't worry him... But then I also promised Marek I'd be there!

Anastasia seemed in her head, conflicted for a moment before she looked back at Kazumin and placed the letter in his hands with a smile. She had to get rid of the evidence regardless of her decision. "You look like you can use a better party... Girls here, well, they're a little on the delicate side sometimes. Don't take it too personally."

Anastasia could not help but laugh hysterically. The guests in her close proximity stared as she leaned on her knees in a fit of giggles. What were the odds? How on earth did Wystan end up with Wulfric of all people? She would never let them live it down! She could even see Callum smiling at her. Anastasia was glad he thought it was funny too. She returned the smile along with a wave.

Unfortunately, the humor did not last long as she caught sight of her father fuming. He looked as if his head was going to explode. She could see him actually readying himself to stand up from his throne, which he rarely did. He never liked to get too close to the guests since there were commoners amongst them. He was not sending a servant. He was going to personally approach them.

She bit her lip and then rushed forward through the crowd, practically stumbling in front of her father. "Hey papa!"

King Edin gasped as if he had seen a ghost. He shook his head, peering down at her, "Oh.. Oh yes, Anastasia. Hello dear... I'll be back in a minute." He rose up and took a step forward. Anastasia immediately threw her arms around King Edin, "Oh father! This ball is so amazing! It's a dream! It's- It's everything I've ever wanted!" He raised his arms in the air, awkwardly staring down at her. He patted her head with a grimace and began to try to dislodge her arms from his torso.

"What is ... the meaning of this?"He whisper-hissed, his brows furrowing.

"You need to leave Wulfric alone."Anastasia whispered back. "I paired them together on purpose...I thought it would be funny! She smiled up at him innocently as she lied to his face. He did not look amused. She then added, "Everyone knows it's just a mistake. Wulfric is the most beloved Prince in all of Eromora soooo no one is going to think anything about it."

King Edin did not look so convinced. He pulled her off him a bit roughly and began to move forward. Anastasia scrambled back in front of him, "If you embarrass him, I'll-I'll cry! Loudly!" That made him pause. With a defeated sigh, he moved to his throne and told her, "Behave. Do not do this ever again."

"Oh never. Not ever! I won't even consider it!"

Anastasia twirled on her heels before King Edin could reprimand her further and danced into the crowd with glee. Yes! Who's the best sister ever? Me! She paused as she caught sight of Wystan and Wulfric. It was hard to drag her eyes away for a moment. Her heart skipped a beat and she smiled to herself. She felt in such a good mood tonight for reasoning she could not describe. It was as if she had taken a drug. The music was the cherry on top. She so loved this song. Anastasia shut her eyes, enjoying the euphoric feeling.

She wanted to dance.

Who said she needed a partner?

Without a care in the world, she started to gracefully move onto the dance floor, performing decent ballet as she pranced around on her own around everyone else. It was as if they were not even there and this was her concert.

Charlotte had been listening to Verrickk's story starry-eyed. Such a magnificent story every time I hear it. She had drifted in her thoughts as she considered what books they might have read before to relate it to. Certainly, the gentlemen read novels, right? By the time she had opened her mouth excitedly, Amir was excusing herself. She closed her mouth and politely smiled, continuing the same once Verrick also dismissed himself. All she could do was watch as the two departed. Did I-... Did I make friends just now? Maybe? Charlotte stared at their backs. Nope. Splendid job. She leaned her hand on the table and relaxed her body as she downed a huge gulp of her wine. She blamed her racing heart for her eagerness to continue talking. After such an event, it was hard to get out of the fight or flight mindset. Her gaze set on her father as he conversated with the doctor and Count Ryn. He did not seem to be drinking up a storm, so perhaps it was alright if she divulged a little more than usual tonight. Surely if she drank enough wine, it would slow her body down.

She suddenly glanced over at the sound of the front door slamming and straightened up at full attention. It was Lady Crystal Damien in a beautiful blue gown. It was unusual for her to attend events like these in her condition, but she looked well. Charlotte loved the sweet girl and felt a rush of excitement upon seeing her. Crystal's here!? She smiled and got up on her tippy toes to wave the girl over, but a blonde man stepped up to her and blocked her line of sight. She sighed, her smile dwindling, but not dissipating completely. Well that's alright. I'm glad she's being noticed. I'll have to find her later though.

As Charlotte let her gaze wander elsewhere, she nearly choked on the wine she had begun to sip as she noticed Count Calbert coming out of the crowd toward her. She set it down to resist the urge to chuck it at his head. She looked around for a direction to quickly speed walk away in, but he was already by her side like an animal leaping onto its prey. A shudder went down her back as his cold voice whispered into her ear.

"You will speak with me tonight after the ball...For now, you may enjoy the party, Lady Vikena... Oh and don't forget to greet Crystal. "

Fear gripped her for a moment and her pupils dilated. It had been a year since she had been at an event like this and even longer since she was presented with conflict. All she could do was freeze up. Though the Count was beloved by all, there were few who knew his true nature. She was certain not even his family knew what kind of person he really was. Charlotte had never dared to bring it up with his daughters. There was a look in the man's eyes as he moved away and met hers that told her all she needed to know: he was furious with her. Then the smirk he wore told her he was also happy she was afraid. He thankfully spun on his heels and went off in a different direction not long after. Charlotte scowled briefly. Should have said oh then don't forget to stop being a jerk! She usually could come up with a snappy response, but when she was nervous there was unfortunately a delay. Charlotte did not yet have it in her to stand up to Count Calbert nonetheless.

Charlotte turned to face the table and scooped up her wine. I just want to go home at this point. Glancing over, she saw a man at another table downing an entire bottle. Charlotte raised her glass toward him as if to say, me too. She helped herself to another drink without hesitation soon after the first one. Soon enough, a woman came up to her with the bowl of paper slips. She knew exactly what it was for but still stared at it indecisively."Uhhh.... I-.....Yes. Thank you." Why did the woman have two bowls in her hand? She selected one at random, nearly missing the bowl as she had started to see double.

Anastasia & Wystan

Tok, tok, tok.

”Oh shit...”

The princess’s voice was hushed as she spoke again, inaudible to her brother’s bodyguard as the sound of shuffling filled the air. After a moment, the door swung open and Anastasia in her pink gown opened the door. She leaned against the doorway and forced a cough into her hand, ”Wystan, it is ever so kind of you to come to escort me but I’m afraid… I’m just so… “She coughed again, her body slumping against the wall as if she were weak,”So sick… Oh woes is me.” She gave him her usual puppy dog eyes.

Wystan’s arms stayed crossed, but his grip on his biceps tightened as he received those eyes. The guard dog’s defenses were compromised at the sight of them, and it took some effort to resist feeling utterly… moved. Something was clearly going on– the princess knew this tactic to be one of his greatest weaknesses, and thus also knew to use it sparingly, for the most urgent matters. The only question being: what was it tonight? Without much of a word, he bit the inside of his cheek to compose himself, looked her up and down, then leaned down to meet Princess Anastasia’s eyes unavoidably.

”My, that truly is a shame, Princess.” The watchdog raised a faux-curious brow. ”Though… may I ask why you have dressed this well, despite being sick?”

Anastasia met his eyes as he spoke, the corners of her lips threatening to upturn, ”Well, I did attend, Wystan, for a moment,”” More coughing interceded. ”...but then chaos unfolded. The Alidasht dropped to the floor and the event of the ball became the event of the fall,” An almost inaudible snicker came from inside the room. She raised her voice with her another cough to try to cover it, ”I just felt simply too ill to continue on in such troublesome atmosphere.”.

“I… see.” Wystan grew concerned for two things: the state of the banquet while he was gone, and the princess’ odd behavior this evening. The watchdog could very well pick up on subtle cues, let alone strange intonations he had only ever seen Anastasia deploy when something was amiss. The only issue being he couldn’t quite tell what it was just yet.

”I may not be your ward, but I am still responsible for overseeing your wellbeing and safety. As such–” His eyes narrowed at the sight of playing cards and poker chips set up on her bed.

”...”

”Princess Anastasia, I ask that you cease your tricks and return with me to the banquet, as soon as possible. As a royal of Caesonia and King Edin’s only daughter, your presence is much needed.” Wystan told her sternly. ”...And before we depart, I would like to see your companions out.

Anastasia's expression changed and she pulled off from the wall. She gave him a small, defeated smile then sighed and knocked her fist on the wall. ”Sorry everyone! Jig is up!She called into her room. She watched with slight amusement as a gentleman and lady began crawling out from under her bed, hastily struggling. They rose to their feet awkwardly and hurried out of the room with their gazes averted to the floor. She wiggled her fingers at them with a smile. There was a pause after that.

”One more.”She informed Wystan and knocked again, this time louder. The doors of her wardrobe loudly burst open as a half-dressed man stumbled out, his clothing in hand. He began pulling his coat back on as he looked at the two of them. Anastasia giggled at his bewildered expression. Once he had himself sorted, he saw himself out as well. ”Toodaloo!”She called down the hall after him

She casually pulled the tie out from her hair, freeing her locks and running her fingers through it. Once she was satisfied, she said to the stern bodyguard, ”Okay Wystan. Ready to go!”Anastasia offered her arm out to him as if nothing had just happened.

At times like this, if his eyes could kill, the watchdog would have sent at least a couple of daggers into the back of the third man’s head– and purposely missed, to send a clear message. Even the Danrose’s own staff and personnel needed to be quadruple-checked by him on a regular basis. Needless to say, security was tight, and he needed to make it so. They could not be careless, lest they wanted to allow happen another event like the princess’ abduction in the past. The watchdog subconsciously tightened his crossed arms, glaring a hole into the trio as they exited the hallways. He made a mental note to scout around the estate three times once the day’s events were over to sniff out any remaining hideaways.

”Your Royal Highness…” Wystan sighed as he extended his left arm for her to use. ”Your safety is of utmost priority to us. In Danrose’s name, I cannot allow anything to happen to you, do you understand?”

Anastasia looped her arm within his, a smile crossing her face at his words, ”Yes, sir. I am as safe as can be… But you’ll just have to spend more time with me to keep it that way! Next time you should come join our game.” She told him with a giggle.

The princess might have said: “Join our game”. However, what Wystan heard was: “Stand watch and be around for thorough supervision.” To which the ward immediately replied with:

”Alright. Only if you would inform me in advance.”

As the two of them made their way down their stairs toward the ballroom, she glanced at him and questioned, ” You haven’t been to the ball yet tonight, have you? Do you know if my brothers are alright? Not yet mobbed to death by all the women, are they?” The guards were opening the ballroom doors for them to enter as they paused in the entrance hall.

”...”

Wystan was silent as he contemplated Princess Anastasia’s train of questions; all of which led to what could possibly be one of the worst-case scenarios imaginable for this setting. The watchdog’s eyebrows furrowed helplessly, almost tempted to question what he would do himself. This only spurred him on to tell the princess:

”You must not leave my sight. This means you may not exit the premise of the ball without letting myself or the princes know. If you are in need of assistance, do call for us. There are an inestimable number of guests tonight, and if anything were to happen–” A pause as the ward reels his worries back in. ”Please excuse me, Princess. I cannot afford anything happening to you this evening.”

Anastasia stared at him for a moment. She seemed a little caught off guard by his words. Guilt and sadness briefly crossed her expression. She cast her gaze away to hide her face a moment, her arm dropping. It always felt like waking up out of a dream when she suddenly felt something.

It was easy sometimes to forget how even though she tended to get away with her mischief, there were others who might still face consequences for the choices she made. Wystan was one of the last people she ever wanted to cause grief for but he sometimes ended up in the crossfire of her impulses. Auguste and him were always there for her, and though it had been out of obligation, she liked to pretend that perhaps she meant more than that to them. Anastasia knew especially Wystan was worried about getting reprimanded by her father surely, but there was a part of her that wished it was for a different reason.

Finally, she looked at him and gently reached up to touch his cheek. ” … Thank you Wystan. Really. You’re a good friend.“ She gave him a smile and told him softly, ”I know it’s your job to protect us and you’re afraid of getting in trouble because of me. I’m sorry. I’ll try not to drive you crazy tonight. Try to have some fun instead of worrying; it’s okay to take a break, you know?”

”That can be allowed once I’m able to ensure your safety by the end of tonight.” Anastasia’s touch was warm. Wystan subconsciously raised a hand to hers, before catching himself just as contact was to be made. That insolent, unworthy, scarred hand of his remembered its place and promptly returned to his side– discipline thoroughly exercised. The watchdog sighed. With caution, he issued a brief scan of their surroundings. After deeming it safe, he leaned down a respectful distance from the princess’ ear.

”Do forgive my impudence, Princess, but I am well-equipped to handle trouble, be it by the hands of the King or those who seek to harm you. It is not that which I worry about.” A pause as he carefully gave thought to his next sentence. Completely and utterly unsure of how to express himself, his tone softened as he simply opted to lay his facts bare as well as he possibly could– an unusual innocence interwoven with his statement. ”...I would be doing this even if it weren't tasked for it. I would still be here if Prince Auguste didn’t ask me to fetch you.”

You are important, was what he wanted to say. However, who was the watchdog to tell Her Royal Highness, Princess Anastasia of Caesonia, the only daughter of the Sovereign to their kingdom, countless leagues higher than he, exactly who was important? Even if it was spoken in the words of a friend, would that not be degrading Her Reverence? Their friendship ran deep, but his strict obligation to the rules was rigorously enforced, firmly believing the princess should not deign to listen to the words of a commoner. Not now, not ever.

With that, Wystan returned to his straightened posture, piercing eyes uncharacteristically darting away from the princess’. Wystan’s hand had touched hers, only briefly, but it was enough for her to feel as if she had butterflies in her stomach. She listened to him as if she were in a trance, her cheeks flushing red. There was something about what he said that was different from what she usually heard. It wasn’t as if he had been flirting with her, as many did and she would always reply with ease. She would always feel nothing about it. But what Wystan had to say filled her with a warmth that was unfamiliar to her. For someone to want to protect her even if it had not been their job, there was no way for her to downplay in her mind; she held value to him.

”Y-You really mean.. it?” Anastasia stumbled over her words. She was thoughtfully quiet before she brushed hair behind her ear and smiled at him, ”Well. Aren’t I lucky?”

The watchdog merely remained silent, offering up his arm once again.

After a moment, the princess moved into the ballroom with Wystan. People were crowding servants with bowls in hand, all grabbing eagerly at the slips of paper. Her expression fell with dismay. She was so hoping they had missed this part. A servant with a big smile soon approached, ”Please take one-“

”No.”She blurted out immediately. Last time, the fellow she had been paired with kept sneezing right in her face. She shuddered thinking of it. Her gaze lowered to the bowl nonetheless. There was only one left. If she took it, then Wystan wouldn’t get to have any fun. After his sweet words, there was no way she’d deprive of him having his break as she had offered him.

Anastasia thus picked the slip out of the bowl and placed it into Wystan’s palm. ”Go. Have fun.”She grinned at him. The servant opened her mouth to protest but then quickly shut it for whatever reason and walked away.

”...” The watchdog was interrupted in his search for Prince Auguste, but obediently opened the slip of paper and took note of his given number. As the announcement had already begun to ring out the designated partners, he took the opportunity to share a stern look with Princess Anastasia, as if to tacitly agree that she would watch over herself while her brothers and he were busy with this section of the event. After all, there was no doubt that the princes would be given a chance to bond with a potential candidate for marriage in this dance, given King Edin’s often ambitious yet underhanded plans. Based on his speculations on all those present tonight and the information he collected to divulge with Prince Auguste, he was sure that Princess Beatrice would stand a good chance at earning a spot next to the second prince.

"Please excuse me, Your Royal Highness.” The watchdog executed a deep bow toward Princess Anastasia before he thanked her for her generosity and the opportunity. However, he was not too interested in whoever his dance would be with tonight, because it did not matter. For Prince Wulfric and Prince Callum, however, arrangements were highly more important, though still up in the air considering the vast number of participants this evening brought. Along with this, it was a shame that the Princess herself would not be able to partake in the dance– perhaps after this was over–

Suddenly, the guard froze in place with an unreadable expression as he locked eyes with his dance partner. The two shared an inexplicable look, and internally, he could not help but simply ask: "Why?” He shot a glance back at Anastasia. Anastasia looked just as shocked and mouthed the word “sorry,” then covered her mouth as if trying to keep something in.

…Because tonight, he would be led by Prince Wulfric, the Crown Prince of Caesonia– one destined to rule over the kingdom as dictated by countless generations of tradition. He blinked once at the royal heir, his face neutral while he gave the prince a deep, well-practiced bow. There was no mistake in the respect the watchdog held for the first prince, but why had King Edin not rigged his slip? Not only was this a missed opportunity– it was also rather embarrassing, more for the first prince than for him. Despite it all, he obediently resigned himself to attempting his best and elected to follow in the prince’s lead, diligently reviewing all his learned dance etiquette so as to not further embarrass the highly-esteemed crown prince.

"Good evening, Your Royal Highness, Prince Wulfric. It is truly an honor to accompany you for tonight’s dance.”

—and somewhere off in the distance, Princess Anastasia's faint, uncontrollable laughter could be heard.

Time: Early Evening
Location: Caesonia Castle Ball Room in Sorian

Servants with fine china bowls came into the room suddenly. Each bowl had little slips of paper in it. Guests turned with curiosity to watch as a servant went up to each guest, letting them pick a slip at random. Most were used to this custom. It was an ice breaker meant to pair strangers at random to dance together. There was a pair per each number in the bowls, ranging from one upwards. King Edin had this done every ball but it was most interesting now that the Alidasht people were here to join in. The servants that went up to Prince Auguste as well as Prince Callum, for some reason, placed the numbers into their palms without giving them a chance to even pick a slip themselves. King Edin was secretly perturbed he did not see this occur with his eldest son, Prince Wulfric, as he had planned for it to.

A servant then went to the front of the room.” When I call your number, please come to the front of the room and meet your partner. The gentleman will then lead the lady onto the dance floor.”

He loudly read out each number for a few minutes and once this was finished, the volume of the music turned up and the dancing commenced.

Annya had let Raven say her piece. Clearly she wasn’t going to let Bowyn off the hook here. She considered her thoughts with a sigh. Did she want genocide? It wasn’t the first word that came to mind. Truthfully, she just wanted this all to end and for her people to be safe, but what was the cost? She wasn’t sure it was genocide, but it was also not an answer Raven would hate any less. She decided to not reply and nodded to Raven’s idea to go cool off. Besides, she wanted to move the focus onto getting this flying lizard out of the way.

She had been about to question Eris’s decision to go to drinks with Inori when Rue suddenly fainted.
”Oh no I should have realized you two might struggle in the heat.” Annya took out a flash of water. ”Maybe a drink might help?” Bowyn had moved quickly to help cool down Rue luckily.

But then a cast sphere started showing a stream in the sky. Yet again, before they could fully assess the prior situations, the universe had other plans. Annya felt nauseous at the sight of one of the sins. The dark elves were teaming up with demons after all. This was going to be way worse than she could have ever imagined. She cast a momentary glare toward Inori. Her intuition had been on point afterall. She could not stay seated as she stood up in her rising anxiety as she watched the dark elves holding the human. ”No!”She cried out as if her protest could stop them from ripping the human apart. Her eyes watered and her hands went to her face in shock. She had not seen something so vile and violent even in battle before. Her grief twisted into fury as the stream ended and she turned on Inori as her eyes lit up with light magic, ”I will END you if you even think of hurting anyone here. I don’t care who you know! If you want to get drinks with us and be our little friend right now, then you will-”

She broke off as Raven’s sobs pulled at her heart. If she had been so upset by the sight, then poor Raven and Saoirse… Annya gritted her teeth and glared back at Inori. ”You stay the fuck there.” Not like a demon was going to help. Looking over, her breath caught as a tornado formed around Raven. This was a nightmare. There was so much happening at once and for once Annya felt like she was losing control of things. If Raven went berserk right now, not only were the lives of those near her at stake but that of Riverport.

If only Nuallan and Rosaria were here. They’d know how to handle this.

”Can you stop her?”

Annya glanced down at Bowyn as he shouted at her. Her heart pounded in her ears but she shook her head as trying to wake herself up. ”... I have to!”She called back to him. ”I’ll figure this out… Take Rue and back out of harm’s way okay? “ She turned to look at Eris, “Eris make sure the others stay back and don’t get hurt!” She knew she could hit the young girl with a force of light through the wind and knock her down, but she didn’t want to do that. Something in the girl’s sobs made her want to cry too.

Annya moved toward Raven, putting an arm in front of her face as she struggled against the harsh winds. Every step was met with resistance, but she knew she had to get closer. ”Raven! Sweetheart! A hazy memory of her younger self crying to go home after her first battle filled her memory. Her sister had held her and let her cry, told her it would be okay. She hadn’t even cared at the moment if the words had been true; she had just wanted to hear that it would be okay in her terror. Annya started to shout to her,”… I’m scared too Raven! That’s the first time I’ve ever seen anything like that!” She pushed closer, stumbling, ” But I will protect you with my life! I won’t let anything happen to you! It will be okay! … If-If you wanna go home, I’ll find a way to get you home!”

”Deep breaths, love, okay! Try to focus on relaxing! Everything will be fine!”
