I can relate to that. Almost being kicked (not to say having my characters outright banned by the players) from RPs that I GM, or Co-GM is a routine thing for me.

I can't even begin to imagine how you'd even get in to that situation. Is it a lack of communication or interaction on the GM's part? Because I've never seen or had it happen to me.

wat. I have never had anyone try and pull something like this on me as a GM. Good thing I don't plan to do it again, since apparently the playerbase is getting worse and worse as time goes on if this is anything to go by.

I've only ever witnessed something like this happen once, and it was justified imo. The GM was using his position to be a godmodding, unfair advantage making prick in a combat-focused RP. Everyone except his one fuckboy friend left with me and another guy when we opened up something ourselves, and carried on enjoying our stupid fandom crossover battles without a guy that figured it was okay for everyone else to be limited to 2 characters, while his friend got 10. Which were all allowed to gang up on one character another person controlled without any consideration for fairness whatsoever.

This was back on Old Guild, too. So it's been a long time since I've heard about this happening, lol. This place continues to disappoint if they're doing that for no good reason nowadays...

I blame the new generations and their special snowflake complex.

I was raised on old school D&D tabletop where the DM and the players almost battled one another to see who could kill who first. Some of my best role playing memories are of either dying to a sadistic set-up or one-uping whatever my old DMs threw at me. Nothing spells memorable in bigger and bolder letters than surviving a battle with an army of 100 level 20 Frenzied Berserker Orcs without taking so much as a single point of damage because of plain dumb luck.

These days if you throw a single boss level challenge at a player and they fail to figure how to overcome it, arguments break out. It's just sickening.

Yeah, a lot of people can't seem to enjoy things unless they are an absolute victor, which I can't understand. I can't play characters like that; I enjoy failures, as they help me develop a character. What do I get out of always winning? If I act perfect from the start, meta-gaming with OOC knowledge, what do I get to develop in the RP? My character would already be everything they could be; Flawless aside from traits that were meaningless? I get disgusted by people who play their characters like that.

Hell, it's made me leave RP's. Plenty of them, in fact. It's caused me to kick people from my roleplays too, on two occasions. I can tolerate criticism and discussion, but I won't tolerate someone crying to me everytime something has even a slight chance of going wrong for someone's character. Because they always want to bullshit out of something, and I have no time for constantly arguing with Mr or Ms perfect.

Well, the character I'm more salty about players forcing me to drop (on the pain of killing the RP if it didn't happen) is a vampire that has a penchant indirect warfare (poison/corrosive gas attacks). I love the character concept and the way she's geared primarily for a massive battlefield control role.

The problems that forced me to stop playing her and grow seriously salty about the RP in question began because no player seemed to read (in multiple separated instances) when she began setting death traps and gassing the battlefield, despite her attacks coming from big blood-colored clouds. Four or five post cycles later, when I declared that everyone should be dead by now, complaints rained on my shoulders everytime.

I grew so tired that I almost quit that RP. These days I stay behind because I still like the concept and mainly the other GMs (I can't blame them for making the choice to keep the RP running, seriously), but I can't care less for anyone else there. I just work on management, planing scenarios and occasional NPC interactions.

That's just the tip of the iceberg, but I don't think that even this thread would have enough tabs for me to type all my bitching regarding some people I RP with on this site. Plus, some of them could stumble upon this and reignite the discussions again.

My patience certainly wouldn't take more of that.

I tried to GM twice. The first time, on the old site, was actually successful for a while. The second time on this site was not. It's become far more common for half your playerbase to go "Yeah, I'm still in it. Busy, but I'm interested" and then never post IC and only post OOC about once a week to reassure everyone that they're still here, still interested, and to keep their spot.

Question of the day. How much does an individual part of a story, effect the whole product for you?

Can a couple really bad sentences make you stop reading something and kill your desire to even finish it? People say the first lines make all the difference. Is that the case for you? Can something really hook you within the first bit? Or is the first sentence such a slog that you can't imagine reading the rest? Because I feel like my brain is overly nitpicky at times. But when I read nearly every single line and go, "You probably could have found a way to shorten what you just said." I genuinely feel like my time is being wasted, like I'm reading someone expanding an essay word count for class, rather than expanding a narrative, action, character or emotion being conveyed.

I role-play in casual a lot, so I think it is safe to presume I have a level of tolerance for genuine mistakes regarding grammar, fluidity, spelling, and formatting. I think for a user, you would have to be a very special type of English Major elitist if some genuine mistakes bother you so much you cannot participate in a story.

It is more common for me to have the opposite problem of this. I often see where a sentence could be elaborated on for greater introspection or description in general for the benefit of the reader. Minimalism is not exclusively nor objectively better than Maximalism.

There is also still a difference between a 2 paragraph post (which by definition is the casual RP standard) with 2 genuine mistakes and a 2 paragraph post with 30 genuine mistakes. But I largely agree.

Thanks. Just for clarity sake, I don't even mean sentences that have a typo, misspelling or a missing comma in them. Just sentences that work perfectly well as sentences, or at least don't have blatant mistakes. But just strike a certain nitpick line with you. I'd give examples of what I'm talking about, but I fear making it more personal than necessary. So I'll use one of my own sentences as a possible example.

Like some people can't handle anything with edge or angst, the very idea makes them cringe, like when I ever read any line that's even vaguely smutty. So if I gave you lines like this-

Life was like flowers laid beside a gravestone. The surface level smile you put on daily, embellishing bleakness that eventually withers without support and dies.

(Second question because I want to share the embarrassment. Anyone write a line that you liked and hated at the same time? How many people have self awareness, but just keep lines like that in their story anyway? :3)

As my own worst/honest critic. That's some angst-ridden sounding bullshit ain't it? It doesn't have any real mistakes, the analogy works fine and leaves enough visual stimulation to the reader's imagination. But without reading the rest, could you handle an entire story filled with nothing but slam poetry? (Please, don't dwell on the line. I think I was critical enough. XD)

That's kind of what I mean. Yes, I know length can help in certain circumstances for sure. But for instance, a certain thing I often see, maybe it's how people are supposed to write and I'm doing it wrong. But, it feels like you aren't doing solving any problems by doing so.

The ongoing list thing, where you just keep repeating the word like a Dr.Seuss novel. For a made-up example.

"Time passed, Time went, Time goes, Time slowed, time stopped, but time dwelled on. One fish, two fish, red fish..." You get me right?

Does "Time passed, went, goes, slowed, stopped but dwelled on." Change literally anything about the cohesive structure of that sentence? Did adding that one word over and over again help the reader understand what they meant? That's the kind of word padding that drives me nuts. I never usually bitch directly at people for nebulous stuff like this, so it's not about elitism or at least not the "I'm better than you, let me (and more than likely my entire posse) remind you." mentality. At least I don't think it is. <.<

It's coherent either way but Seuss is using anaphora for emphasis, in this case that would be the repetition of time. There's nothing wrong with your revision of it, just that it loses the literary device. Seuss' thing has a rhythm to it and rhythm makes things easier to read or more easily memorable. For example, try clapping as you read the Dr. Seuss thing. You'll get into a 'one-two' rhythm almost like, say, footsteps. Time-passed, time-slowed, time-goes, time-slowed, time-stopped, but-time, dwelled-on.

You don't have that when you take out the repetition of the word 'time'. Sure, both of these work but one is more...let's say fun to read.

If that makes sense.

As long as I can read the post and make sense of it, I could care less. I myself do not have perfect grammar or any of the like. I'm here to have fun not feel like I'm in high school all over again. If someone's post is just pure garbage I let them know by saying "Hey can you slow down a bit and fix some things up." Sometimes the people who are doing this- English is their second, and sometimes even third language so shittt, they are doing amazing! I don't know. It doesn't bother me or take me out of the story much, I'm more concerned about people who purposely don't read other's posts and only make things about themselves all the time.

I feel like I care a decent amount, but I have a wide tolerance that varies depending on my mood. It all comes to writing compatibility, really.
