Tables courtesy of @Altered Tundra. Please note none of this is 'objective truth' in the IC. It's just flavour. Consider it my interpretation of a characters strengths and weaknesses regardless of whether or not I manage to show them off adequately.
I think this more a topic for Roleplay Discussion rather than Off-Topic

@Hank @Ruby I find myself agreeing and I imagine this topic would get more traction there. Perhaps an idea to ask the OP, but at least now you guys are aware.

Can't write for any of my characters right now, no matter how hard I try, which got me thinking. I know how I try to get into my characters' heads when they're being stubborn, but what about everyone else?

So, how do you get into character for, well, your characters, be they for a roleplay or personal stories?

One of my methods is to run a Cliff's Notes version--if you will--of their history and overall personality through my head as a refresher for why they are who they are. Has decided to not work for me for the past day or so, but hey. There you have it.

I self insert a lot of the time. I know that is seen as a bad thing a lot of the time, but as with all things involving writing, the tool is only as good as the craftman is. If you are a good writer, you can do a self-insert in a way where it's not a totally obvious attempt to play out your fantasies a lá I want to be a badass shadow elf who is super edgy, witty and intelligent, who can sail through the air effortlessly and shoot down 2 bad guys before landing on top of the big bad boss and destroy him, ending it with a witty one liner and so forth, oh and also even though my character is a badass and very angry he's actually a nice guy kthx.

So how I tend to do it is I take one aspect of myself, usually 'bad aspects' that are more like character flaws, and enlarge them. For instance anger is a good one. Then the character would grow and embody anger, or another symbol.

This can change during the RP, in fact I hope it does, but it's generally a good rule of thumb so that you always know how to react.

That said I don't always do this. Sometimes I play characters that are total opposite me; easy-going, friendly, understanding, empathetic, etc. It's a bit harder but generally I just ask myself 'what would I not do.' Sometimes it just comes naturally. It's all dependent.

Amegakure no Sato | S-rank | Leader of Amegakure

TIME: Present Day - Morning | LOCATION: Konohagakure - Exam Stadium Observation Room | INTERACTION: Kaito Chosokabe, @Ganryu; Sayuri Nisshoku, @Write

Yogensha had moved herself to the room where Kaito would be healed after his failure to secure victory or even a draw. For a moment it had seemed like there would be a draw, but Kaito had somehow passed out in one of the last stages of the fight. At least, that was the explanation she was offered by the proctor. It would have sufficed - she had never had much faith that Kaito would succeed in this test. Shinobi like him were better off testing their skills away from the public eye in an area where they could craft the environment to their liking and fight from the shadows. At least... that was her idea regarding the boy. It was a disservice to him to think of it, but truly, he had not stood a chance in an arena where the environment was carefully orchestrated to benefit only those who favored the direct approach to a fight. An oversight of the Hokage, in her eyes. The game was rigged from the start.

It was also little surprising that Kaito had an outburst. It wasn't the fact that he had lost, it seemed, that troubled him. It was how he had lost, and more importantly, to who. She smiled as she stood at the window, overlooking the peaceful outside of Konohagakure. A stark contrast to the violence that was now going to occur just outside it's walls. How ironic for one of the most idyllic villages to have an aptly name 'forest of death' right outside it. Nobody seemed to question it. For good measure, perhaps.

It was only then Kaito seemed to have noticed her, and he quickly responded by apologizing and offering his services. She did not reply - instead, she took a moment to mill over his outburst. “Kaito,” she said slowly, in between his apologies and offer and his question about her assistant. “You would do well to apply your anger in more efficient places. The mind is a vessel as you know - the knowledge of the Sage fills it. The mind is also the precarious balance, the yin-yang we apply in our physical being, our ninjutsu, it must be the same in our head, the balance of yin.. against yang. The sole purpose of it is to balance us in our lives, as I understand it. There must be anger, surely, but that means there must be something to counter-balance that.”

She glanced out the window a moment longer before turning around and looking to Kaito. Her smile had disappeared, and her face was contorted into a stern, serious look. “What is your counter balance?” Mental, psychological equilibrium were just as important to her as a shinobi's comfort in battle. Kaito had proven the latter - even in a fight, he had remained calm. But, this anger she saw in him, she would need to ensure that it was applied in the right direction.

She did not, however, raise her voice. Instead, she sought to understand and learn from Kaito. If his allegation that she was perfect was correct, then she would not learn anything from him anymore, and could only seek to learn from the Sage. She knew this to be untrue, but did not correct him. Such a vision of his leader could always be used to push him in the right direction, to lead by example, from the front, and not from a desk in the back. “What have you learned?” The sharing of wisdom was intended for her to understand his perspectives better, to understand what had aggravated him and what pushed him further. She would not correct him, she would not tell him her own lessons she'd drawn from his fight. Instead.. when he answered, she would nod at him understandingly, and accept his visions as his own. She had, after all, a deeper understanding that every person is their own and must learn on their own.

She turned to the window again and looked outside, glancing at the green of the trees. A sight she would never see in Amegakure. But she did not feel jealous. She felt homesick. “Sayuri will not be participating. She did not care to enroll, and although that is her own choice, I have my doubts I would have allowed her to enroll either.” The reasoning for this was more complicated than her belief that she was unready. Quite the contrary. Sayuri was more than ready, and she was confident that Sayuri would've done well. Perhaps too well - that was also her reasoning for being against her enrollment. But she did not tell him this, and her perfect composure meant that he could not have guessed it, no matter how shrewd the boy was. Which he was, she knew, but not shrewd enough. There was nothing shameful there, either, as very few people were shrewd enough to understand Yogensha's through thoughts and reasonings.

“She will be here shortly, but since she was signed in as my assistant and not a shinobi, there may have been complications with her papers. I am unaware of it as of this moment, but knowing Sayuri, she will find her way. She always does.” Sayuri's way was usually different from her own, that much was true too. But she understood Sayuri, or at least thought she did. It was better to leave her be and let her figure things out on her own.

Unbeknownst to her, Kaito and Sayuri would become very important to the village later in time. But now.. they were just regular shinobi to her. One was a promising student who had just failed and learned some valuable lessons. The other an assistant and protege who seemed more occupied with finding her own way than serving the village at times.
Kuroji(Black ops)

Seiki-hei(Regulars)

Sakai ban'nin(border guard)

@Odin just some alternative suggestions.

Fair enough, I'll edit them in.
Amegakure's organizations and ranks

  • Seiki-hei, regulars
The run of the mill shinobi that performed everyday shinobi tasks. Genin, chunin and most (special-)jonin make up the regulars, under the command of the jonin commander. They operate under the Amegakure Shinobi code, and adhere to the Amegakure ninja way. Ultimately they are the same as most other shinobi forces. As for their uniform, the Amegakure regulars are allowed some leniency in their uniform. Cloaks, however, are advised due to the weather conditions in Amegakure.
  • Kuroji, black ops
The ANBU of Amegakure, black ops specialize in espionage and assassination. Contrary to other villages, the black ops are sometimes sent out on missions for monetary gain as the low number of shinobi in the village don't allow for any shinobi to be underutilized. As such, the black ops are part of the assassination squads that undertake missions as well. Their uniforms are a bit more strict and are recognizable mostly through their black clothing and an additional metal forehead protector that says 'Black Ops' on it, usually worn on a belt loop alongside the regular Amegakure forehead protector.
  • Sakai ban'nin, border guards unit
Due to the nature of Amegakure's position in the middle of three larger villages, they are forced to vehemently protect their borders at all costs. These units will go out and confront trespassers, ordering them to turn back and take the long way around Amegakure, and if they fail to do so, will engage and theoretically destroy the opponent. The border guards are typically lead by a borderguard-specific jonin, and then three regular shinobi, but can also consist of four borderguard shinobi.
  • Fukisokuna, irregulars
These shinobi are anything that doesn't fall in any of the other categories. They are perhaps closely related to the Sannin rank - not really part of the armed forces, but at the same time definitely tied to Amegakure. There is no given title that the fukisokuna use, and most of them are titular, nicknames and such. Currently there are no fukisokuna, but perhaps in the future.
  • Minashigo-in koyō sābisu, Orphanage employment service
Perhaps the most infamous of the Amegakure institutions, the orphanage employment service or otherwise known simply as 'the orphanage' is a service that deals with children abandoned by their parents or who lost their parents due to war. They come from all over - but mostly from Amegakure. This is due to the frequent usage of Amegakure lands to do battle in by other countries which causes displaced children to end up either in Amegakure or wandering into Amegakure - though, at times, the orphanage has been known to employ the Black Ops to exfiltrate orphans from other areas outside of its' borders. This has earned them a bit of a black mark because they are effectively taking orphans, which isn't so bad. But the process after it is somewhat of a grey area, because the children are then raised as shinobi and made to fight in the Amegakure forces. This has earned critique from other villages, but Amegakure has been quick to retort that they are merely taking care of the children that their wars have orphaned.

Many of these institutions go under different name in the day-to-day lives of the shinobi, as nobody would refer to a shinobi as a regular, or as an ANBU specialist as a black-ops. They are merely there in the upper echelons of the armed forces, used by commanders and kage alike.
Do I have to post yet? Heh.

yes
Underrated: Transport Fever. Admittedly I feel like a loser when I am sitting there watching my little locomotive trains run by and I'm just enjoying the scenery, and I have nothing with trains all together. But something is incredibly pleasing about making a functioning railroad system and seeing all the different transport modes come together to form a whole is... incredibly satisfying.

There are other games out there that do more or less the same (Cities Skyline etcetera) as Transport Fever isn't really just a transport game either, it's not a railroad tycoon game. The way they handled city growth is incredibly interesting and I like how dynamic it feels and how it feels like I can influence the city growth if I play the game right and do something that requires thought rather than slapping down some zones.

TL;DR Transport Fever is great game, shame it's overlooked by people in favour of other games.
@ArenaSnow I see you. You ain't slick. That's like forum trick nr 1.

TIME: Present Day - Morning | LOCATION: Konohagakure - Exam Stadium/Fire Challenge Room | INTERACTION: @Spanner, @Project, @j8cob (Team) @Reflection, @Altered Tundra (Targets)

As soon as Kamui had taken off, Sakana would be right behind them. At this point in time they needed to utilize every strong point in every members' repertoire, and momentarily that meant that they had to let Kamui lead them despite his weakened state. Things seemed to be going fast and fine, but then Kamui alerted them to a change. They broke off - this was good. It was easier to defeat two teams of two than a single team of four. Sakana briefly looked to the side to ponder who they'd be up against, when Kamui continued. Something else had changed. A jutsu had been released? Most likely a sensory jutsu. Most self-respecting shinobi would have at least a single sensory nin in their team... and team fire had two, if you counted Tsukiko's extraordinary smelling sense. “Tsk.” He sucked the air between his teeth in annoyance. Kamui was right - they had to go fast. Even if the two knew they were coming, if they were fast enough they could at least prevent them from preparing adequately.

“Agreed,” he said, and then began overtaking Kamui, propelling him forward harder and harder with every single tap of his feet on the trees - unbeknownst to him, the taps on the trees would most likely also alert the user of the jutsu that they were speeding up. But at that point.. how useful would that information be? Tap... tap... tap tap... tap tap tap... his feet picked up the pace until he breached the clearing and landed on the grass, standing almost directly in front of Jaakuna and Kurin. Both of them were shinobi that he recognized, being a Konoha nin. “Oy,” he casually said to them. For a moment it might've seemed like he was the only one - at least to Jaakuna, who was unable to tap into the sensory jutsu Kurin was using, and thus would not see the other three members of team fire until they, too, broke the cover of the forest to meet this team of two.

“I need your scrolls,” he blandly stated, reaching to his back with both hands where he would pull out the two corded knives that were in their sheaths diagonally on the back of his hip. Although it might've seemed like he was bargaining for their scrolls, he was really just giving Tsukiko, Kamui and Usagi time to get into position and ambush them. However, that would be reliant on their ability to synergize - and so far, if Tsukiko was the guiding principle of synergizing, there would be little of that in team fire. If Jaakuna and Kurin both paid exceptional attention to detail, they would also notice that Sakana no longer had a scroll of his own. If anything that just minimized their gains from fighting Sakana - and of course, it would be impossible for them to tell Tsukiko held Sakana's scroll until she revealed herself.

Sakana himself eyed the area carefully, looking to see where the rest of their team was. He saw, however, nothing. It seemed they had been abandoned, truly.

I'm normally not one for seeking advice for a problem as I tend to tackle it alone and head-on.

I feel like what i am asking for in a roleplay mostly seems either out of reach or not very appealing to people (out of date) and at times I've honestly felt like leaving and not coming back because at times i feel like i am not being understood with what i want.
On the one hand I feel so frustrated that it happened but on the other hand I feel mostly frustration and at times depressed (if that makes sense).
At times whatever RP's i have i am also waiting for a reply or if they forgot about it which has me vexed also. It's like whatever road i have I'm bound to hit a dead end sooner or later and it doesn't help me feel positive much in the slightest because i feel like it's another thing to chalk up that is against me.

That sucks. We all deal with it. 50% of having a succesful RP is getting lucky and having a nice partner that is on the same level of writing give or take a few 'skill levels'. The other 50% is timing and getting lucky that the right people see your thread.

What is your advice and thoughts on this because i do not know which way to go right now on this fork in the road even though my misses are more than my hits..

Get over it. That's my advise. Anyone who tells you otherwise is just being nice when fact of the matter is we all have hits and misses in our roleplaying career and almost all of us have more misses than hits.
