Given that the IC is almost two weeks old and that most (if not all) of the major contested characters are currently spoken for, I've decided that the 24 hour waiting period requirement for any new apps can be amended. The exception being that if any current major characters become available again, those will be able to be contested.

So today marks the one-week anniversary of the game's official start. It actually started eight days ago, but due to @DocTachyon's suggestion, I decided to count Saturday as the day to start monitoring post activity. As such, today begins the long-awaited (I'm sure) return of none other than... The Weekly Post Check!

For those unaware, each week I'll be posting a reminder/status update of those who haven't posted in a week or longer, adding how many days each listed player has to post before the two-week period has ended and the player is removed from the roster.

This is purely based on the stated rules. If you have sufficient reasoning for a delay in posting but intend to stay in the game, you can request a one-week extension with the given reason in this thread.

Born into a world of war and violence, the winged people of Thanagar strike fear across the universe, making use of their Nth metal weaponry and advanced technology.

A veteran of the Rann-Thanagar war, the atrocities of which shaped her youth, Shayera finds herself an agent of the Thanagar Police Force. Operating and training under the guidance of her betrothal, Commander Hro Talak, Shayera battles all those that oppose the power of the Thanagar Empire. Yet, day by day Shayera finds herself doubting the cause she has spent her whole life dedicated to. She finds herself haunted by constant nightmares, mainly consisting of the assaults on Rann, yet intermittent with segments of forgotten memories of a time she does not remember on a distant world.

As highlighted through my portrayal of Magik in Absolute Comics, I really enjoy stories involving a character's journey of self-discovery and actualization. Hawkgirl, particularly the version shown within Bruce Timm's Justice League and Justice League Unlimited television series, is a character who I feel embodies these themes extremely well during the "Starcrossed" story arc; This featured Shayera having to choose between her home planet and Earth. The conflict here of individualism, collectivism, and fighting for the common good are ideas I want to explore further.

The first few arcs of my story will take place amongst the stars, as Shayera Hol works as a Thanagarian Police Officer, before eventually heading to Earth.

My concept takes huge inspiration from the previously mentioned story arc from the Justice League series, as well as Captain Marvel from the Marvel Cinematic universe.

♦ Hro Talak: Commander of the 31st Thanagar Legion during the Rann-Thanagar War, Hro Talak is regaled as a war hero. After the war, he joined the Thanagar Police Force, working alongside Shayera. The two became betrothed to one another shortly after the war.

♦ The Thanagar Ruling Council: Both feared and respected by the people of Thanagar, the Ruling Council are the Oligarchy which rules the Thanagar Empire. Many will live their entire lives without ever setting eyes on the council, with the invitation of a meeting with the group often being considered a death sentence.

The roar of the craft’s engine thundered as it rocketed above the waves. While crudely put together, the speeder moved swiftly, the lower fin slicing through the top of the water, kicking up waves of crystalline water in its wake and giving the craft a vivid tail of blue that extended after it like a flag. There was almost a beauty to it, however, that prospect was taken away by the sight of the crew.

Chitinous exoskeletons sloped upwards across their bodies to their heads, where numerous pairs of insectoid eyes flickered madly, as they scuttered around the ship. All of them, bar the pilot, stood circling the centre of the vessel, where a series of small cargo containers fell piled atop one another. They brandished weapons as they protected their bounty, aiming them across the sea in paranoia. They had a right to be scared. The stolen pile of unrefined nth metal would be enough to buy them an entire moon if they wanted. Which meant that the Thanagarians would not be letting them escape the planet without a fight.

“You see anything out there?” The leader of the Dragonfly Raiders asked nervously, his voice intercut by a series of ravenous clicking from their pincerlike mouth.

One of the crew stepped towards the edge of the deck, raising a set of binoculars to their eyes. They scanned the skyline slowly, taking in the orange hues of the sunset and nothing more.

“I don’t see nothing.” They clicked in response, before taking another glance.

That was when a flash of gold flashed across his vision.

He yelped in response, tearing the binoculars away from his eyes. He whipped out his blaster, wildly aiming it around him.

“There’s a Hawk!”

Before the rest of the gang could react, the speeder lurched downwards as a great force collided against its nose. They turned in unison, their eyes widening as they gazed upon the angelic being now stood before them.

An imposing birdlike mask sat atop her head, her eyes white slits either side of the beak. Red hair fell perfectly from under it, falling effortlessly atop her armoured shoulders. Powerful wings of grey feathers erupted from her back, fanning out either side of her triumphantly. A large metallic mace sat firmly in her grasp, pulsating with energy, engulfing the ship around her in a light purple glow.

Her eye furrowed as she looked between the group.

“I am Lieutenant Shayera Hol, and by order of Thanagar, you are all under arrest.” Her voice was barely loud enough to be heard over the engine, yet it struck the Raiders in front of her deeply. She watched as they shuffled nervously for a few seconds, eyeing each other as if deciding what to do. This did not last long however, as with one last glance towards their fortune, they laid fire.

Beams of red energy rocketed towards Shayera as she darted forward, shielding herself behind her weapon. Strafing to the left, she swung, the bandit she struck going flying overboard as soon as the nth metal hit his body. Moving her body down, she brought her mace back around, slamming it upwards into a second, sending both him and his weapon flying into the sea. Still, she continued. One moment she was at the firing end of one of the insectoid’s blasters, the next her mace was breaking one of his mouth pincers will a swing of her fist.

As she surged forward through the group, the leader slinked backwards. He heaved one of the containers with him, cowardly seeking to make off with a chunk of his prize at least. He peered quickly over the edge of the vessel, his mind calculating how he would make his escape. Yet as the final member of his crew fell before him under the power of the Thanagarian warrior, he knew he had lost.

Dropping the crate, he raised his blaster pistol towards her, firing wildly.

She dodged, taking to the skies momentarily with a flap of her wings, before launching herself atop him. Her kick sent him hurtling backwards, his body smashing into the pilot’s control panel. The machine surged with sparks as he hit it, causing another lurch in the ship as it tilted downwards, hitting the waves of the ocean below.

“You… fuckin’ Hawk” He managed, his right arm gripping the side of his body tightly as he arched forward in pain. Moving quickly, he reached out with his spare hand to the left, towards where his blaster lay upon the deck. Before he could reach it, however, Shayera’s boot slammed down onto it, the bones in his hand shattering.

As he wailed in agony, she smirked, before kicking the weapon away.

“All you had to do was surrender,” Shayera explained coolly, wiping a smear of bright green blood off her mace as she did so.

"Intelligence work has one moral law - it is justified by results."

Once upon a time, Sarge Steel became the world's best spy. After a stint at West Point, Steel would end up working in the United States Army Intelligence and Security Command aka INSCOM. While working for INSCOM, Steel worked predominatly in the realm of counterintelligence, but much of his work during the army days remains heavily classified.

Military intelligence provided an easy transition into civilian wetwork. After his time with the Army was up, Steel ended up working for the CIA's Special Activities Center aka SAC. Steel remained with SAC for several years doing more dirty work than you could think to imagine. Steel's handlers used to joke that if his file ever went public the bureaucrats wouldn't be sure to give him a Nobel Peace Prize or send him to The Hague. Steel's illustrious career was cut short when bad intelligence got him burned and captured by Russian agents. Steel would eventually escape his captors, but he would his right hand after trekking through as Siberian winter on foot. His intelligence career seemingly ended, Steel made his way back to the states and settled in Blüdhaven where he grew up.

Back in Blüdhaven Steel took up two new hobbies. The first was the bottle and like his father and mother, before him, he spent every night drinking himself into a stupor. The second was PI work using his long career in intelligence to solve petty crimes and infidelity cases. The work wasn't exactly fulfilling, but it paid for Steel's drinking habits so he couldn't complain. After a few more years of this charade, Steel decided that he would be better off dead.

Right as Steel was about to throw himself off the Littleneck Narrows Bridge, a man approached him with an offer. His name was Miles Craven and he represented a group called International Operations. As it turned out, Craven was looking for people exactly like Steel. People, the world had spit up and chewed out without even a second thought. Steel already sold his soul to the devil once... what was once more?

I'll be honest, this pitch is a bit more personal than I'm used to making. My Dad's favorite comic character was always Sarge Steel, so I've always had this desire to get a crack at writing him in one of these games. In amalgam games, he seems a little out of place, but in the tighter scope of just the DC-verse? I feel it's the perfect place to shoot my shoot as it were.

I have this vision of a washed-up Cold War-era super spy thrown into a new world of superpowered lunatics and learning to adjust. Personally, I find that I write my best work when I have lots of constraints and what is more constrained than a character that only has his wits, charm, and robot hand to get the job done. I also have a soft spot for the Wildstorm verse, so I'll take any opportunity I can to shine a spotlight on that corner of comics. Hence why I have Steel being recruited into I.O, instead of for example: the DEO or such. That and as Morden has already pointed out, the wonderful world of spy fiction gives you many pots to stick your paws in.

The story I have planned is inspired by the classics like le Carré as well as more contemporary works such as SLEEPER and the James Bond comics by Dynamite. So it's more grounded and gritty in a similar vein to my recent take on Jessica Jones in Absolute (RIP). My thesis statement of sorts being from le Carre actually:

Miles Craven

The leader of International Operations. Currently leading I.O in a devasting shadow war against MJ-12, A UN-backed shadow council that Craven used to be a member of. Steel doesn't trust Craven as far as he can throw him, but he's enough of a professional to know that you don't bite the hand that feeds you.

Ivana Baiul

Head of Sci-Tech, the R&D division of I.O. The creator of Steel's new hand and Craven's second in command. Steel trust her slightly more than Craven which is not saying much.

MJ-12

A secret Illuminati style shadow council who heavily influence world affairs. As the name suggests, at any given time 12 anonymous members make of the leading body, but below them, they have an army of spies, enforcers, and spooks across various government institutions across the world. A former member of MJ-12, Craven seeks to topple the entire institution whether it is to replace it with a system of his own design or to truly liberate the world is yet to be seen.

The Night Before

Undisclosed Black Site

Miles Craven peered through the shadowed glass of the operating theatre. In the middle of the room, Sarge Steel lay asleep on an operating table as a robotic drone grafted metal to flesh. Steel was an investment and Craven always made sure that his investment was in good hands.

Next to Craven, Doctor Ivana Baiul tabbed through a hologram of Steel's file. From the corner of his eye, Craven noticed the perpetual frown on her face deepen as she read.

"Do you doubt me, Doctor Baiul?" Asked Craven his eyes never leaving the window.

"Are you sure, of one so old," inquired Ivana. "Is he truly the one?"

"You have the file," explained Craven. "His record is exemplary, the CIA should teach a course at the Farm based on him."

"Yes," admitted Ivana. "But, there is still the matter that when you found him... he was about to jump off a bridge."

Craven laughed at this. His laughter was all dry and sandblasted air, like a million tiny pieces of glass shattering at once.

"I like a man who has lost everything Doctor Baiul. It saves me the effort of breaking them down."

"Fair enough."

The pair fell back into their easy silence as they watched the drone work. Flesh to metal and metal to flesh. Soon Craven and Baiul's plans could begin. For now, they watched as the Doctor's drone made Steel whole again. Forging the broken man into something new.

I would also like to request that in the future, all applications avoid using the hider tag for their sheet. Using it within the sheet is fine, to obscure bits of info , but hiding entire sheets has made it more difficult to be able to see that someone had applied on a couple of occasions.

On that same note, if your sheet has a sample and hasn't been either approved or denied by myself or @Hillan, please feel free to call us out in this thread. We're doing our best to work with everyone and get them sorted, but we're still human. We make mistakes, and a great benefit of large player groups is being able to be called out on stuff like this.
