What's with the prevailing new trend of black on guild background for titles and such?

It's not unreadable per se, compared to some of the other "styles" people like to use, but in my book it's almost as semantically bad as using some abhorrent shade of dark blue on guild background for dialogue. Is it... cool to make everything dark like that on a dark theme?


Monitors display colors differently. I can read black on the light grey background fine. Others cannot. I was unaware of this until I read my own black-on-grey post on my phone and it was not readable.

Also.. it looks way cool.

I miss the old days of the guild. Back then I actually got people who were interested in my roleplays, or was able to find roleplays I am interested in doing. Now of days no one checks out my interest checks, and no one makes roleplays in the form that I like doing, and or have a subject/fandom I like (non pvp). I swear I could juggle all the fandoms between Star Wars, to Dragon Age and not find one person unless I let everyone have ridiculous open powers that turn the rp into a trollfest of who can out nuke each other.

I noticed this with some of my signature images on my phone. The colours would be way off and over saturated. :/

I've noticed that too. There's a lot more interest checks that are almost full OOC without the character sheet sections. Makes me wonder if some interest checks are simply over doing it and whether people need to get back to the basics and dumb it down a bit.

Interest checks are a way to boost your roleplay's "production value." I can understand why people are hesitant to spend hours learning how to code, format, and pick/make appropriate banners for their interest checks, but I think it's worth it. When I see a well made interest check, I know the host put a lot of effort into it and has faith in their idea. Otherwise, you end up blending into a sea of one paragraph interest checks that are essentially "So I'm going to do a sci-fi/fantasy/Dragon age/Danganronpa/Lonely House Wives/etc RP. Any takers?"

Bonus points if the title is "[insert genre or fandom here] anyone?"

Much like Broken Promise suggested, I don’t think it is a bad thing at all nor is it “overdoing it”. The more details presented in your advertisement the better. A good interest check shows confidence in the concept and proof of a relative dedication to the premise. I will never join something without a good sense of confidence and proof of premise. You attract better players through this method as well.

Man I really hate it when people use the word loli unironically, A loli is a sexualized version of a kid, it basically translates to sexy child (which is two words that should never be used together). why the fuck would anyone call themselves a sexy child unless they're a pedo or moron.

Pedophilia is wrong, using the word Loli unironically is like screaming "I FIND ELEVEN YEAR OLDS ATTRACTIVE". people shouldn't use it at all. I don't call myself a sexy child, no one who's sane does either. so why should we do the same with the word loli?.

I pretty much make OOC-lite for interest checks because I always end up getting a lot of traffic for my games and I've found clearly outlining what exactly the game is going to be and expectations helps give people a clear idea of what they'd be getting into.

Way I see it, large portions of text are kind of one of my staples and if people think the interest check/ OOC are a bit much, they're probably going to hate the IC content. Considering most of my games last for 1-2 years usually, I'm sticking with a formula I know works.

I agree with the central point here, but I tend to disagree that there is not a wrong way to do it. For example, if you’re alienating your playerbase or not very good at creating events or integrating characters or some dozen or so other factors—you have a very real problem and you cannot just wipe it away with “it’s my style, so it isn’t bad because it is my style”.

Am I wrong?

I always thought of an interest check as an idea that could be described in that interest check thread as being based off or inspired by someone famous/a movie series/an anime/a book series.

I won't go around throwing out numbers, but I bet many roleplays here have been based off of one of the above.

I mean, it's a part of a whole right?

If we had to write up the whole plot, premise, our strange ideas totally developed and throw it out there, wouldn't we be better off seeing a publisher to make money off our ideas. Then possibly putting in all that time only to have no one like it?

I understand the attraction to joining a fully developed interest check like you said. I understand that it does show dedication like you said.

I don't think there are better players and worse players like you seem to think.

But that's my little funk. In that its not better players, its different people with different priorities and different types of creativity and writing experience.

Its asking a lot to have fully developed interest checks for them to be the only ones you'll join. For me I don't mind helping build up the premise with the GM with suggestions if they're ok with it. I don't mind interest checks with not that many details, because they can be worked out later. Together with others, as part of a roleplaying group.

I find the optimal interest check to be the one that doesn't say everything - if only for effective readability if nothing else - but has more than just random pairings or a very vague idea of what someone wants.

I'd consider an interest check something of a summary. You don't pour everything into it; you put in enough to give people a clear idea of the basic questions. What is it, what do you want, what do we need to know about you, and do you know what you're doing. These can be answered with a paragraph or so. The interest check worthy of my attention gives the reader a basic understanding of who the partner is and what they're dealing with; it answers simple questions like "what kind of rps do you do/don't do" and "how often are you expecting a post from your partner". It also gives an indication of what the partner's ideas are. A list of pairings with a theme, a few simple plot ideas, a detailed plot idea, whatever. Just a few pairings or "I want romance" doesn't give an idea of what someone wants.

All about the balance. That, to me, includes the formatting - I couldn't care less about your fancy black-on-guild-background text with fancy fonts and then a dark purple preface or whatever, but if it's just a blob of white (huge bloody paragraph without spacing or with poor spacing and grammar) then it's not really worthy of attention. Likewise, a single paragraph that doesn't attempt to satisfy the above curiosities and comes out to "i wanna rp" indicates laziness on the part of the poster to me. Indicate what you want, and give a concise presentation to a prospective player. It doesn't have to be too long, but it ought to have some sort of substance to it.

But it is ultimately a matter of perspective and style. I've just found that people who meet the minimums set above are more likely to actually stay and invest something than the people who post a paragraph looking for a fling and soon drop because they figure they had enough of that 3 week whim.

I've got a well planned out roleplay. Open world and all, long term and with dedicated players. But it seems recruiting new people into something ongoing is hard. Kinda sucks people are intimidated by a ongoing story when the new roleplays have a likelihood of dying before mine will ever end. Alas I must endure the lack of fresh blood.

I'm difficult to draw in existing roleplays because they either a) developed in a direction that doesn't appeal to me, b) have practices or people that are simply uninteresting, c) have too much that has happened without a seemingly easy way to integrate into the game, and/or d) didn't appeal in the first place.

Any or all of those are factors in why people don't join.
