Noble Arms is now either four years old, or three years and eleven months. The third thread had lasted for more than one year.

NCQuest: A Mecha RP - The Relief of Cape Town

The Lore Thread

The year is 2577, 500 years after a Nuclear War that ended the Age of the Nation-State. Now, the world is split between Independents; settlements and towns living a hardscrabble life in the wastelands, and the Ruling Corporations, eight large organizations that have seized large portions of the planet and its people for themselves. The majority of the Ruling Corporations' personnel are tyrannical and arbitrary, twisted by long isolation from the masses whose work supports their way of life. The average person in Corporate territory lives in fear, bowed down by heavy burdens in a soulless environment, before dying quickly and painfully.

Complicating the picture are the Neural Combatants (NCs), giant humanoid machines left behind by the nations of the world before everything burned in nuclear fire. Using technology that binds together brain and machine, all NCs have Cores that cannot yet be duplicated by even the most advanced Corporation; these Cores, when attached to a body, allow the pilot to conduct feats of strength and speed that borders on the supernatural. In essence, Neural Combatants use technology that makes Mecha work; the impractical made practical. The more NC Cores a Corporation has, the better they are in the constant warfare that covers the planet today.

But now, that balance is changing. With the help of stolen research from the other Ruling Corporations, Tshwane Mining Inc., the rulers of Sub-Saharan Africa, have done the impossible: Rediscover how to create new NC Cores. This gives them the potential to manufacture legions of new Mechs, and thus disturb the finely held balance between the Ruling Corps.

Now, Cape Town in South Africa, where the initial research was done, is being besieged by the Denver-Vegas, Fairbanks, and Paragon Corporations; all three have invested in a gigantic army to conduct said siege, while Volkov, the very strongest Ruling Corp has pressured Tshwane's ally, Al-Amir Group of Companies, to stay in the Middle East lest it face total destruction from the north.

So Tshwane's CEO, Katlego Kgosi, has resorted to desperate measures: He has called upon Haven, the collection of Independents that still rule Australia, to provide the help other Corporations would not provide; Haven, despite concluding a recent war against Red-Star, still has forces to spare for a relief expedition - particularly as Katlego has offered a tantalizing prize; a copy of the research on creating new NC Cores!

And yes, Inkarnate permitted this.

Here are the rules on characters and NC's: (last rules, I swear.)

Mikhail Chekhov

"Out of my way!" Mikhail said to a couple of other students as he fast-walked to his designated classroom, passing by a weirdo in a fedora in the corridors. Giving a small 'hmph' at said weirdo, he went to his Chemistry class, noticing that he was seated near a tall blonde Finnish girl, probably eighteen years of age. Said Finnish girl looked weak and naive, but dedicated - Mikhail can use that in his quest for revenge. All he had to do was approach her after class and say his genuinely tragic sob-story and he'd get her help in deciphering the secrets of the poison that killed his father - Oh, and lie about wanting to prevent more people from dying from it.

For now, however, Mikhail studiously took notes and did quizzes and answered questions - As his rude behavior had made him enemies among the student body, it was more important that he had to get on his teachers' good sides in order to keep away from being harassed.

Looking over the current lesson, Mikhail was disappointed that it covered stuff his private studies had taken up already. No indications of poisons and how to counteract them, none of the lessons he was actually interested in learning. Nevertheless, he memorized what he could because it was needed to achieve the high academic rank he knew was going to be useful.

Once it was time for Phys Ed, Mikhail was a bundle of manic energy. Tennis, Dodgeball, whatever sport and exercise was on offer, Mikhail aced it all despite his small and frail-seeming build. Of course, he had competition, as the 'Fedora Weirdo' and 'Mr. Peppy Ponytail (Joey)' were apparently in this class as well. After noticing this, Mikhail focused himself in trying to match or defeat whatever they achieved - He was so exhausted afterwards that he didn't know if he had truly succeeded.

And now, Biology. Apparently, 'Peppy Ponytail' was there as well, along with 'Alexander the Snob' and the 'Finn Girl'. Mikhail knew that Alexander the Snob was loaded plus had a fashion deisgner for a father, meaning that he'd probably try and be the 'social lion' of the class. Well, time to establish himself as the true alpha kid on the block, as well as intimidate Ponytail and give Finn Girl his sob story. But which should take priority among those three activities? He decided to give Finn Girl his sob story first - Part of him softly thought it was because he didn't want to pick a fight just yet,but he suppressed those thoughts.

Once the school day had ended, he'd sit down beside wherever the Finn Girl was, and ask, almost courteously, "Hey, mind if the two of us have a chat?"

If allowed to sit beside her, which he was sure he would be as Merja had no reason for suspicion, Mikhail would brood quietly for a while and then ask, "Hey, what's your name, Finn Girl - I mean, Miss? My name is Mikhail Chekhov, yes, the Mikhail Chekhov. My father's death by poison caused an international incident between my birth country and my true one - This one. But that's not what I wanted to talk about."

He slid into the relevant subject. "Rather, I want to ask, how good are you at chemistry and biology? And also if you are willing to serve as my assistant - I plan on discovering exactly what poison killed my father. And once I've discovered that I plan to create an antidote so no one will ever have to suffer through what he did ever again."

The young man leaned closer to her and showed her the newspaper clippings about his father's poisoning, complete with a younger version of himself at the funeral. "Proof just in case you think I'm full of horse pucky."

City Event - Mostly for the Main Party

Rote, Jehenne, Tamlorn and Noel

"We plan to kill Katherine, yes," Inquisitor Malamocco said. "And as for why we rescued you, it's because you and Rote are important to the enemy's plans." He looked at Jehenne, then Rote, "Rote's father made a bargain with Growthseed, the 'Goddess' - And by Goddess, a Mortal who drank from the Golden Ghral to gain power - of fertility and growth to make himself fertile enough to sire Rote. This made him a pawn of the Cult in the futture, as Rote himself knows."

He then looked at Jehenne once more, then continued, "You, on the other hand, were born under a celestial alignment, a celestial alignment in the heavens that marks you as suitable to be impregnated by the essence of Mansbane, the God of Desolation, the one killed by the First Xul. The Cult of the Keeper's plan is to possess you and Rote, with the latter having his mind obliterated so that he can serve as a vessel for Growthseed - Who can change genders as necessary - While you are to give birth to Mansbane reborn, dying from the pregnancy."

Inquisitor Malamocco paused to let the horror of his words sink in. "This, by the way, means that you two have to be kept safe - Although I will be candid, many among my order argue for killing the two of you now rather than risk the destruction of all that is dear to civilized society."

Rote then put in, "But you are not one of those people. Rather, you want us to fight alongside you. More to the point, we can be used to bait the Cult of the Keeper into revealing themselves." A pause of his own. "Well, I definitely don't want to have my mind obliterated, and no one deserves to be impregnated with a 'God' of Slaugther and Desolation. And I know what I witnessed before the Rebellion as well as my father's last words - I believe you." Then he looked at the Inquisitor, "But aren't there weapons that can kill Gods around? The Axes of the First Xul?"

Inqusitor Malamocco nodded, "Quite scholarly, I see. And that is our first job, to secure one of those Axes for our own, hopefully with the Xul's consent."

Then back to Liberio and Noel's antics as the Inquisitor said, "I would like to remind you that while the Church of Existence has few to no laws on sexual matters, such things are still not... Seemly to discuss. Either way, Liberio, I will respect your wishes, but Katherine Sophia Gotha still needs to be brought down. We'll just have to find some other way. Now, back to allying with the Xul - It has to be an alliance, as the Xul are some of the best fighters and druids I know plus the most zealous against the Old Gods' followers."

Back to Tamlorn as the latter asked for evidence. Frowning, Inquisitor Malamocco extended his hand, opening a small Timespace portal to his private study. He then took out, from said portal, several letters and documents, a few in the handwriting of Rote's father, Braun Kaufmann, while others were written on stationary exclusive only to the Imperial Palace.

The Inquisitor would also include a small booklet containing a key to deciphering secret codes as he handed the letters and documents to Tamlorn.

"Here," he said gruffly, "This is enough evidence to discredit Katherine Sophia Gotha, but not enough to ensure her death."

@MagusDream, It is okay.
New Ghis, 110 AC

The palace's 'War Room' was a fairly large chamber of wood and brick, with thinner and narrower windows than the norm in order to ensure safety from darts and arrows. This would have made the heat sweltering if not for pipes that carrried cool water to underneath the floor - A marvel made by a privileged Myrish slave, one who now commanded slaves of his own despite his own lack of freedom.

King Grazdan the Chainbringer busied himself over preperations - Food had to be supplied, weapons forged, and armor and shields repaired for his gamble. And indeed, it was a gamble. Raising two Legions' worth of troops, including a hundred Unsullied. Getting Astapor's good offices long enough to let his army through their territory to Yunkai - His sister and her husband were useful for that purpose, but not a game-winner. And finally, actually taking Yunkai by land and by sea, with a significant portion of New Ghis' fleet being sent to arrive at the enemy's capital in order to tighten the upcoming siege with a blockade.

But the real battle will begin once the Astapori realize that his armies had no intention of departing, once a new Military Governor had been installed over the people of Yunkai. For the Good Masters of Astapor were not all willing to agree on reunifying the Ghiscari Empire - Independence was a metaphorical nacrotic.

As King Grazdan sat in conference with his generals - He had insisted on the presence of scholar-slaves in this 'war room', so as to emphasize the importance of logistics, he can tell that a few were getting bored with discussing matters of supply and just wanted to march to Yunkai already.

Well, they'd get their chance. As the King read a scholar-slave's memorandum about the state of the siege engines to be brought to the coming siege of Yunkai, he noticed one of his generals being less bored than the rest - Perhaps even alert. Good old Draknoz mo Rarahl, it seemed that his long-postponed promotion was for the best.

Once the discussion was done, King Grazdan said in a firm tone, "Then it is settled. We will go through Astapor, giving gifts to the Good Masters beforehand to let us through and with our diplomats instructed to give our reasons for marching on Yunkai as 'disposing of a competitor. A large detachment of our fleet will, at the same time, sail northwest, then northeast, to blockade Yunkai. The land forces will number two Legions - a total of 12,000 men, while the fleet will contain another legion of 6000 alongside the overseers assigned to keep the galley slaves in line. The army we will send over land will have a large siege train to construct catapults, ballistae, and even one trebuchet."

He paused, "Because Draknoz mo Rarahl, though a veteran of our wars, did not get bored by the discussion and the speech, he is to be put in overall command of the expedition - His word will carry the same weight as mine. Will anyone disagree with me? If so, speak up, please."

The sudden sharp edge in his tone reminded everyone just why he was their King - The reason was not just hereditary right. The scholar-slaves paused, even as the generals broke out into a sweat, especially the ones that were previously the most bored. Draknoz mo Rarahl, a middle-aged man whose prematurely graying hair marked years of fighting other commanders' battles for them, laughed and said, "My King, as gratitude for your trust in me, I promise you this - Yunkai will fall in less than five years!"
City Event - Mostly for the Main Party

Mergoux, Rote, Jehenne, Tamlorn and Noel

"That we have, Milady Alcroft," Rote said to Jehenne as the Gondola docked at a side entrance of the Black Cathedral. His face was solemn, solemn and sad. "I'm sorry about all this tragedy - I wasn't lying or deluded when I said what I said on the slave market about its cause, but I wasn't expecting to have additional proof so early. Assuming that our good Inquisitor here has additional proof, of course."

Inquisitor Malamocco looked at Rote and said, "Not now. Inside the building first. Although if you want small talk with the Alcroft woman, you should do that - It seems you don't know how to talk to women or what to talk to them about."

Then turning to Tamlorn, the Inquisitor said, "Haven't you been listening to Rote's words? We're on the brink of the greatest crisis since Wolfram's Cataclysm! Whoever won the Nobles' Rebellion, Noble or Crown, was going to play into the hands of the enemies of civilization itself! Now no more delays, we have to go in!" Inquisitor Malamocco frowned deeper, and then entered the building, muttering about, "These young folk nowadays..."

Once inside the Black Cathedral, Inquisitor Malamocco continued, "The Nobles' Rebellion was instigated by the Cult of the Keeper, who wanted to return the Old Gods back to Erde. The Cult also had agents in the Royal Court in Kaisersdat, whose job was to ensure that if the Crown won, it would come down hard on the rebels. As I said, whoever won, Noble or Crown, was going to play into the hands of those who want to destroy civilization - Only by bringing Humanity down to the level of savages can the Old Gods expect regular worship once more."

A pause as the Inquisitor waved to the just-arrived Libero and Noel accompanying them, before he continued, "If the Nobles won, the Reich would have fallen apart. If the Crown won, all that was needed was to provoke the Emperor into overreaching with the Iron Decree, thus compromising the credibility of the Crown and the Reich as a whole. Either way, the sense of security of everyone in the Western Continent would be impacted in some form. Do you people get where I am going with this?"

"I do," Rote said as he noticed Noel and Libero's presence. "Now, give me a break from business to meet with an old friend, please." And with that, he ran up to where Noel was, tackle-hugging, the young man and saying "NOEL! I'm so happy to see you! Heck, the only thing that'd make it better is if I had an excuse to be naked -"

Inquisitor Malamocco rolled his eyes and cleared his throat. "Young men nowadays." He then looked at Libero and said, "Greetings, Fragach scion. Your actions have brought the approval of the good aspects of Existence today." A frown as he continued, "Here is something that might stay your father's anger - We have the identity of the Cult of the Keeper's agent in Kaisersdat. As I said, the Cult of the Keeper is a group trying to bring down civilization as we know it so that the Old Gods can be worshipped due to everyone forgetting they are mere mortals with great magical power."

The Inquisitor smiled, "Her name is Katherine Sophia Gotha, and she is the one who planted the idea for the Iron Decree in our sovereign's brain."

@Smike@Stern Algorithm@Overlord Thraka@Aqutanama@Rune_Alchemist@Zoey White@Landaus Five-One@Solaris@jdh97@MagusDream:
House Grazadan of New Ghis

Recent History: Many say that the Ghiscari are a broken and decadent people, playing at the glories of Empire while not lifting a finger to make good on their claims of superiority. Those people have not been to New Ghis, where the spirit of the Old Empire still beats strong. Founded by more martial Ghiscari disgusted by the increasing sloth of their brethren, New Ghis is the most dynamic of the cities of Slaver's Bay, able to deal with Astapor, Yunkai, and even Mereen as equals despite its relative youth. And behind this dynamism is House Grazdan, which presents itself as the descendants of the Imperial Line of Old Ghis, whether by blood or by achievement.

House Grazadan was founded by Grazdan the Renewer, who claimed to be the descendant of a survivor of Old Valyria's purge of the original bloodlines of Old Ghis. Before making this claim, however, he was a son of a Mereenese aristocrat who preferred fighting above lounging and commanding free men to slave soldiers. Eventually, Grazdan tired of the decadent ways of Mereen, and left for the island that New Ghis would be founded on with many among Mereen's elite who shared the same sentiments. Once the city was founded, martially-inclined Ghiscari from Astapor and Yunkai would later follow, putting themselves under Grazadan's command in order to refound the glories of the Ghiscari Empire.

But it was not just aristocrats seeking nostalgia that followed, but also pirates, mercenaries, and of course, slaves. New Ghis quickly became infamous for its raids on the Summer Islands, the Qartheen, and even other Ghiscari when the leadership can get away with it. Over time, even ships from Volantis were preyed on, although only when the New Ghiscari can get away with it. And New Ghis grew rich as well as resented.

Now, New Ghis reigns under a new King, Grazadan the Chainbringer, so-called because of his participation in slave raids and campaigns of conquest in his youth, where several cities and outposts on the mainland were forced to acknowledge the rule of New Ghis. But the Chainbringer desires more - His brethren in the Slaver Cities do not acknowledge the need to reform the Ghiscari Empire, and they must be made to.

And no cost will be too high.
