Bio

Maybe the real plot was the friends we made along the way. [Last Updated: February 1, 2025]

I'm too old for this shit and I have learned not to share too much of my personal life on the internet. I earned a 4-year English degree, work as an English and writing tutor at a local college, a communications copywriter for a non-profit, and I'm a development editor at an academic publishing company. That means I word good.

I like literature and poetry. I first started writing as a hobby with online roleplay at the start of 2010, and I've slowly drifted away from it in recent years. I enjoy most genres, but if I had to pick a couple of favorites, they would be sci-fi and high fantasy—heavy emphasis on the high fantasy. Some of my favorite moments have come from Elder Scrolls roleplays, since it appeals to the D&D nerd in me.

I have a tendency to get carried away with making my character sheets. I've always been a fan of characters overcoming their weaknesses and obstacles and I try to make that show in many of my characters. Therefore, many of the narratives I explore come from a place of vulnerability, but I try to balance the heavy themes with light whimsy. Sometimes though that door swings the other way and I lean into the whimsy while sneaking in moments of vulnerability.

I also try to research whatever it is I'm writing about so that I'm not just spitting into the wind. Unless that's what my character is doing, in which case I try to make sure that's made clear in my writing. Sometimes that gets in the way, like in the case of blacksmith character I wanted to make but felt compelled to study up on blacksmithing first (don't fall into that trap, no one really gives a shit).

It’s kind of hard to define my style, as I’m influenced by all sorts of literary movements and schools of criticism; dark romanticism, modernism, post-modernism, Marxism, feminism, post-structuralism—I have a lot of isms in my pocket. Nathaniel Hawthorne is one of my favorite dark romantic authors, Dickinson is one of my favorite naturalist poets, Judith Ortiz Cofer, Langston Hughes, and Robert Frost—they’ve all in some ways informed my writing, as well as many others. I even tend to look to some of my fellow guild mates for inspiration or analyze what I like about their writing and see what I can do to improve my own through their example.

@akjeWell, the way I like to look at it is this: Alula's moon death beam of orphanage devastation only blinded the ettin, but your midget with a sword he can only swing around haphazardly gutted it like a pig.

There's also the matter of you landing a series of successive hits and controlling the ettin and its actions. I'm by no means criticizing you, it's just that even if the ettin was only a mini-boss, it might need GM approval for you to go Leeroy Jenkins and downright slaughter it.
How about I equip my merchant with a flintlock pistol? One shot at a time, so he can't really spam anything, but it'd be one powerful shot. To add some offensive presence to him.

woah, dood. Wanderer brings up a good point. Dynamite esplodes everything, engineer not necessarily defensive-based. We got ourselves a powerhouse.
@Spoopy Scary@DragonbudI shall reserve Spoopy a spot and he could even make his CS now, but he can't join until I say so

Thanks handsome.

@Spoopy Scary This merchant wouldnt happen to know where Kelvin can get more explosives, would he?

Oh, that's easy! They're over by-- *shot*
@The Mage, tell you what: if I ever get one started, or if I see one available, I'll give you a ring. ;)
In case anyone is interested, my character idea - assuming the GM decides to accept more people - is a merchant with underworld/black market ties. Non-combat. So then there'd be a good party face, extra income, and somebody for Carver to rebel against. Can't imagine he'd like black market folks. :P

Then again, my character doesn't have to tell him that.
Let's break the trend of annoying people joining games, and talk about joining games with annoying GMs.

A while back (under a different name, of course, this account is young), I wrote a character for this one roleplay. Except that the GM didn't like him. It wasn't that he was an unrealistic character or anything. He had depth, I wrote it to be complex, and he wasn't perfect. He was initially accepted, good start, and I made my first post.

He wasn't a sociopath or anything, he was just kind of a dick. He even had his reasons. His name is Abraham, for easier reference.

But the GM didn't like Abe - as an actual person, mind you. He said if he actually met Abe in real life, he'd try to kill him. I'm just thinking, "Okay, you know what, that seems a little far, but I understand. My character isn't necessarily charming." But the GM used his dislike of Abe as a person that it influenced his decision making and how he interacted with him and how he controlled the plot. After my first post, I was immediately shut-down, my character was controlled and not given a chance to avoid, and was knocked out in one punch by a lightweight woman. Abraham, on the other hand, stood at 6'1" and 180 lbs. or so, and was a boxer. My weight might be off, but you know. Actual fighting experience, heavy-weight, and was auto-hit without a chance to dodge and made so that he was knocked out with a single punch by someone half his size.

The justification was that the GM didn't like him as a person and didn't like the premise of anti-heroes. So fervent about it that he argued with two or three people about it for a couple pages before we gave up and left. Somewhere along the line, the argument was over more about his behavior as a GM than what had actually occurred within the roleplay.

Beautiful times.
