I am seeing many interest checks in the Free RP section with Casual/Advanced tags being used and players setting minimum requirements of a paragraph or more. Doesn't anyone even know how to read anymore? The Free section clearly states what kind of RPs are allowed in the Free RP section.

Free RP: For roleplaying involving one-liners, few-liners, speed-posting, and for anyone who doesn't want to have to worry about standards. See individual GM for RP specific standards.

Free RP = NO STANDARDS WHATSOEVER!!! If your RP ad has standards, then it does not belong in the Free section PERIOD. That's what the Casual and Advanced sections are for.

There's a counter disclaimer for that.

The moderators don’t enforce standards for RP sections unless a move from section-to-section is requested by the GM.

Also, I'm guessing this is about this RP. A paragraph is, what, 3-5 sentences? That's still a Free RP post in terms of length, lol

I'm tempted to make an RP with a 'Free' tag and put it in the Advanced section.

And make it 'Jump-in' too!

You're free to do that. You will likely not get push back for it. I'd advise any further questions about moderation policy go in suggestions/help or directly to a member of the staff.

Who went ahead and cast a necromancy spell for this old topic? Lol

Let people RP with their friends in peace. Yeah there's guidelines for what should be in each section, but demanding any enforcement is like looking at your neighbour's backyard and telling them they must plant roses rather than tulips when your own garden only has seeds.

At least people are roleplaying... Better than sitting around and not doing anything.:3

Just posting because OP getting fired up over an RP having standards is hilarious.

Real talk though, you're not going to fit the wants and needs of every GM neatly inside of 3 sections. Honest bullet points for all the sections would look something like this:

Free: For people who don't take the writing aspect of RPing too seriously and prefer a fast post pace.

Casual: For Free roleplayers who don't mind reading longer posts, and Advanced roleplayers who don't mind reading less-than-perfect writing.

Advanced: For people who want to challenge themselves, take the writing aspect very seriously, and/or prefer a slower posting pace.

Free:
The door opened.

Casual:
There was a faint howl from the hinges as the door opened.

Advanced:
A ten thousand year bloodline of masters and slaves, converging into one entity. It was this entity who would be the chosen one, who would begin their journey of mystery and might; however forces unseen would hinder this ancestral collective. Rust and corrosion — decades of neglect. Though they would struggle this would only be a hump they would overcome. For these people were mighty, they were triumphant, nothing could hold them back as they pushed forth...
...and the door opened.

A few lines is a paragraph. If you were to bring a paragraph (5 lines) to a Casual RP, you'd be laughed at. Also, you say that
Free RP = NO STANDARDS WHATSOEVER!!!
but yet in those rules you copied and pasted, it clearly states See individual GM for RP specific standards. Which means that the RP will have rules and guidelines for you to follow per the GM, thus creating RP's with guidelines. If you don't have rules/standards in your RP, how the hell are your players supposed to know what you expect from them?

I see you are team #fuckHOA too. Good.

I don't really agree with the general theme of OP's post but I also don't agree that there should be no standards whatsoever. We've complained about the names and descriptions of the 3 sections for ages now and I've even suggested a change to them at some point to reflect the 3 sections better at some point but I never got any feedback on it.

The way I saw it and still see it is that rather than advertise 'levels' of roleplaying (which can be elitist, although that is a thing more of the past on RPG and nowadays there is not as much elitism) which makes it seem like 'free' roleplaying is somehow worse than 'advanced' roleplaying, as if being able to splurg 5 pages of word vomit on a post would somehow be better by definition than a one liner.

It should instead focus on levels of dedication and a 'minimum' tag should be created that allows the GM to reflect the minimum level of words in a post; from one liners to '2-3 paragraphs' to '5+' to 'novella length' so that the section titles/descriptions can reflect the level of dedication required for an RP. Free RP would be something like rapid fire one-off short stories, casual would transform into your run of the mill RP where a post every few days is perfect, and advanced would be for those writers who take multiple weeks or longer to cook up a post.

Indirectly you will see many more novella length RP's in the latter section, but at least it seems less arbitrary and contrived.

At the moment I'd almost be inclined to suggest reducing the amount of sections and just doing away with free, casual and advanced and instead make one section; group roleplays. Because as it stands everyone throws their roleplay into casual anyway because you wanna catch a lot of fish and you need to catch a big net for that. Why go fishing in free/advanced where there are far less fish? You don't fish in a lake when you have the Atlantic ocean available to you.

I'm not in favor of this because I've seen what happens on RPNation.

That site has absolutely no standards and it shows in the RPs, as you can't find a decent one underneath the absolute heaps of nonsense. The tag system is worthless as it's bloated to all hell and people barely utilize it correctly. The reason Casual is the most populated is because Casual is the middle ground option, but the other two main sections still have their population that checks them. Additionally, the simple psychology of having a "barrier" makes it easy to intuitively guess where your RP belongs. While some may miss the mark on occasion, generally people post their stuff in the right place. I know how to spot some people that frequent both free and Casual, and honestly, they're the ones I keep the closest eye on because I know their RPing priorities are completely different from mine. That's not to say they're worth less than me, but they most certainly look for different things in the hobby, comparatively.

If there's one of the three sections hurting, it's advanced, but advanced has always been like that. Its never been a section with very many RPs, but the ones that are there usually find their players pretty quickly due to the small pool, and make for some cohesive groups.

It may be just because I constantly check in on RPN, but seeing how that site's organization strays further and further from clear separation, it's also just met with a consistent quality drop across the board. There's a reason I frequent this site more; the nature of the distinctions cultivate a culture I'm generally much more of a fan of.

@Ammokkx The only other site I frequent has only one section, but they have a vetting system that forces new players to 'apply' before they can access the full forum. Keeps out a lot of the garbage. Other than that I completely agree with you, I just threw that 'option' (it's not really an option) out there to vent my frustration with the system we have as is. RPN doesn't have the best population in my opinion regardless so I wouldn't venture there even if they did have a separation.

That's not quite correct. You need two posts to properly show off Casual.

Post #1:

Anyone looking at Noel would see a beautiful young woman, but she was broken. She didn't look like a slave. Noel's silken white dress was the envy of the upper class, but it might as well have been a chain collar. She had been taken from her real parents at a young age. old enough to remember her origins, but young enough to be molded into what they wanted her to be. Her hopes, aspirations, and dreams had been beaten out of her every time she tried to escape. Few would blame her for trying to escape the prison that she lived in, but she was made to realize that escape was impossible, and just attempting would do nothing but subject her to greater levels of humility and and suffering. Her clothes hid her scars, and she was properly cleaned before being put in a room with her buyer. "What would you have me do, my lord?" She was committed to doing everything he asked.

Post #2:

Robert took off his shirt and handed it to her. "Iron this."

then you need the response that chews as much scenery as possible to try and compensate for the scraps thrown at them
