In SoL, the 'goals' become the drama and interpersonal connections/histories players make with each other. Plus setting in in places like a school/college for example give you a timeline to work with.

Time to start the hunt for a decent SoL RP. I could make one, but it would be nice to be a player and a GM for once xD

About
Been at this game for a good while now. Starting RPing at the tender age of 15 back when Bebo was a thing. A year later I found myself forum Roleplaying and haven't really looked back since. Over these past ten years I have done practically every kind of RP you could imagine from Nation RPs and Arena RPs to 1x1s and Large group RPs. My last RP hobby was fighting RPs, which I have now decided to leave behind in order to pursue more SoL style Rps.

Outside of RP I am an aspiring writer, despite being terrible with words, as well as an avid gamer. If I am not on discord with the Guild or RPing in some way, I am probably on either my PlayStation or on Steam. Moved into D&D and ended up starting a podcast that has been an interesting journey.

"Here for a good time and a long time"

Name: Jordan Magana
Gender Female
Age: 23
Alignment: The Guild
Rank within Organisation: Member

Birthmark Shape

Location of Birthmark: Located on her chest, Stating just below the collarbone.
Magical Abilities: Hydromage - Has the ability to create water from her hands. She can create spheres of water in any other place she can see, but it requires significantly more concentration.

Place of Birth: Nashville, Tennessee
Currently Residing: New York City
Personality:Jordan would describe herself as a Happy go-lucky kind of gal. She rarely judges people and prefers to try and get along with everyone. Despite this attitude, there is a mean- sadistic part of her that comes out when she is provoked or heavily intoxicated, which given her love for alcohol should be pretty often. She also secretly enjoys a fight, and loves nothing more than going out for a night out and having a few drinks before pummelling someone. No-one ever suspects the innocent girl to pack a heavy punch.
History/Bio: Born in Nashville to two Magi parents, Jordan lived a fairly quiet and normal life in the south. Her parents made her aware of magic at a young age and her responsibility in protecting it's secrets. It wasn't until her teenage years did she start to rebel and lash out from her 'perfect' upbringing. Things finally came to a head with her family and at the age of 18 she was kicked out of her family home, her parents having enough of her rebellious ways. While they cared about her, she needed to make her own mistakes.

While her family thought she wouldn't be able to cope, Jordan took to it like a fish to water. She crashed at friends places and it was at this point in her life that she finally met her dearest friend of all: Alcohol. While her friends all betrayed her, Alcohol never did. In the end she started stealing from friends to feed her habit. It didn't take long for her to be ran out of town with her 'issue'.

Since then she has been making her way up the east coast, drinking, smooching and stealing where needed. He happy demeanour got her invited to more parties, which involved more alcohol. Eventually she ended up in NYC and this was where she met the Salem and discovered the Guild. She was eventually recruited and made her way to Member, despite turning up to only half the classes, and arriving to the ones upon which she did attend, full on plastered.

Relationships
Name: Alcohol
Relationship: Lovers
Characters opinion of them: The one thing that has never betrayed her or deserted her. Alcohol solves everything.

Aloysius Leighton

Aloysius hated travelling. He just hated it. Okay. Maybe he didn't hate travelling, but he hated having to travel with the chauffeur that his mother had appointed him. In order to keep an eye on him she had picked the most stupid, dense and all round idiot you could find. He could not even begin to fathom why his mother wanted to do this to him. His guess would be to keep him on a short leash, or at least something along those lines. No matter. It was time for him to break his ‘leash’. His mother had served him well over the past few years, but he didn’t need the old hag anymore. He had been twisted and manipulated far too long by her. He had let her take advantage of him and now because of her he was stuck in the frightful situation he was now in. He had gone beyond the point of no return along time ago.

It was now him or Salem. Both could no longer exist in this world concurrently, despite any feelings one might have for the other. The distant past was just that, a memory. If politics hadn’t gotten involved, Aloysius would have been in The Guild and who knows how far him and Salem would have gone. He never wanted the power himself, despite what Salem’s father might have thought. He would have been perfectly content with living by Salem’s side. He no issue recognising her power, or at least he used to. In the aftermath of her father's decision, his mother had taken the chance to try and convince him to rise up and remove the De Silva’s from power for good.

So here he was, locked in a kind of proxy war against his former lover for power he never wanted to start with. Still. The past eight or so years had given him some lust for power, and he would no longer say no to it. But he was more than aware that the second he did succeed in his goals, his mother would try and use him for her own selfish gain. While Aloysius would never class himself as evil; he would most certainly put his mother into that category. If he was going to go through with this it was going to be for himself, not anyone else. So for now he needed to try and break away from his toxic mother. And he had just the plan to do that.

On the sly, Aloysius had been saving money and emptying his accounts to other accounts that were hidden from his mother. Most importantly none of these accounts were in his name, but instead under an alias. So all he had to do now was to make his mother believe that he had suffered an unfortunate accident. Which exactly why he had bought his wonderfully dull chauffeur with him. They had driven all the way out of New York and into the forests and hills that dotted the landscape. Tall trees and miles of ever stretching wilderness was now surrounding them. They had stopped for a rest break by a railway crossing in the middle of nowhere. They hadn’t seen another vehicle for at least a good hour which was perfect. All Aloysius had to do now was wait.

His dumbass chauffeur was busy sitting on the bonnet of the jet black vehicle they had driven out on, eating some kind of meaty food. Aloysius didn’t really care to be honest. As for Aloysius himself he was busy leaning against a tree observing the railway tracks. He was looking in both directions, hoping that any time soon a train was going to pass by. He secretly hoped it was going to be a freight train. While he needed to execute his plan today, he didn’t want to have to destroy a passenger train if he could help it. While other members of his organisation might be blood thirsty, Aloysius just wanted to get all this over with. Every person killed just made this war more and more costly. And while he didn’t exactly like the non-magi, they didn’t deserve to get caught in the middle of this.

The symphony of sounds that comprised of the forest was interrupted when the signal crossing siren began, pulling Aloysius out of his trance like staring state. Looking both ways he finally spotted what he wanted. And to his relief it was a some kind of freight train. The train would keep getting closer and closer towards the duo. Aloysius kicked himself towards off the tree he had been slouching against and casually began to yawn, stretching his arms into the air. Once his arms were up in the air however he would quickly bring them down with force, back to his waist. As he did that there would be a sudden updraft of wind in front of him. Underneath the train a sudden cone of gale-force would spring from the ground, lifting the train from its track, the carriages that the train comprised of broke apart from one another and began to fly all over the area.

The chauffeur let out a large scream watching the train break apart and hurtle towards them. Waving his hand once more, Aloysius summoned a second, more focused bolt of wind, appearing from behind the broken train, just to propel the debris closer to his idiot chauffeur and vehicle. In a single crash both the vehicle and the poor man were crushed. What a shame. No more having to listen to annoying conversations about his dog eating his sofa while he was away. Things were going to well, that was until one of the stray containers that were attached to train came loose and was flying towards Aloysius. Swiftly, he flicked his wrist and the container suddenly was flung to the side, hitting a poor pine tree. At this point everything had calmed down. The sounds of the crash had died down, and the symphony of the forest resumed undisturbed.

Aloysius surveyed the scene. His vehicle was well and truly destroyed and his chauffeur was most certainly no longer of this world. Time to vanish. Aloysius reached into his black overcoat he was wearing and pulled out a vial of red liquid. It was actually blood. His own. Collected earlier this morning when he went to the clinic for a blood test. No one needed to know that he had ‘borrowed’ the sample. Popping open the vial he carefully began to drop small droplets of his own blood in a line, moving from the vehicle wreckage and ending just where the forest began. Once there he poured the remaining contents on the muddy grass to make a small pool of blood and proceeded to drop his wallet on the floor there. To finish it off he pulled out his work phone; the only phone that he had according to his mother, and proceeded to pick up a nearby rock and bring it down on the phones screen, smashing it. Now destroyed, Aloysius discarded the phone next to his wallet.

Now it looked like there had been an unfortunate accident. Aloysius had crawled out of his vehicle, bleeding and stumbled off into the forest. Never to be seen again. Who knows, maybe he gotten eaten by the wolves that stalked the forest. His body would afterall, never be found. They would search and look, but would find nothing. It was now time for him to disappear. Before that though he needed to do one last thing. He pulled out his ‘personal’ phone and opened the camera app, taking a picture of the wreckage. He then began to message someone, attaching the picture in the process. The person he was messaging was none other than Salem. Underneath the picture he put the message:

”Whoops! I sneezed xD”

He knew she wasn’t going to take it well. It was Salem. Even when they were together she constantly had her serious face on. She only ever laughed rarely at his jokes. Though this one was more of a deliberate attempt to mock/annoy her.

With the picture sent, Aloysius began to walk down the long road, back to the nearest town, which from memory was roughly a mile away. Not too long a walk, but long enough for him to enjoy the tranquility of the forest for a bit. Once he had arrived at the small town he hastily summoned a taxi and made a beeline for New York. Sitting in the back of the cab, Aloysius checked his messages. He knew he needed to see everyone tonight. There were going to be consequences for what he just did and he needed to make sure they were prepared. He opened the Dark Shadow group chat and sent a single message:

”Meeting Tonight. 8PM. HQ. Don’t be late.”

With that he turned his phone off and proceeded to relax. It was a long ride back, so he might as well make himself comfortable. An hour later, the news broke out about the crash. While everyone was obviously concerned for the loss of life, the media couldn’t help reporting that the heir to the Leighton Empire had died. Despite the fact the police had released a statement saying that he was missing. Bloody media. Oh well. Aloysius had his phone off too. So no one who saw the news could message him. Until the meeting tonight, it would look like he had well and truly vanished. And that was exactly how Aloysius wanted it.
It is really good to see all the character sheets coming back together. I will have Jordan added shortly.
I will get Al ported today, and possibly get the first post up, depends how productive I feel since I woke up at 3am haha
Okay, one last lore question: are angels/demons/spirits a thing in this universe?

Not really no. There have been several magi folk takes about them, but for the most part they don't exist.
Hmmm... would a storm witch who secretly practices blood magic be acceptable?

Sure. Though the blood magic would have to be rather basic and practiced very carefully. The Dark Shadow may have less than honourable intentions but even they steer clear of blood magic. The Guild... Well, oh don't wanna know what they do.

"You have no idea of the power and influence I wield"

Name: Aloysius Leighton
Gender: Male
Age: 24
Alignment: Dark Shadow
Rank within Organisation: Glorious Leader

Birthmark Shape

Location of BirthmarkLocated on his upper back, left shoulder. It is roughly 10 centimetres across and 15 centimetres tall
Magical Abilities:Aloysius has the power of the wind. He can create gusts of wind from seemingly nothing, from small gusts to hurricane strength winds. He has also started to learn the basics of creating wards, able to protect himself from incoming damage.

Place of Birth: Cambridge, Great Britain
Currently Residing: New York, United States of America
Personality: Devilish, Overconfident and conniving would be the three best words to describe Aloysius as he got older. Proud of his heritage and snobbish to anyone who isn't, his evil streak has gotten worse over the past few years. He has developed a sadistic streak, enjoying mental torture and torment. Almost always bearing a grin or a smirk, Aloysius has convinced himself of his superiority over others and while this can be true in most cases, it has caused him to get into some perilous situations in the past.

History/Bio: Born to a British Mother and Japanese Father, Aloysius learnt of his powers from a young age courtesy of his mother who possessed magic abilities herself. Growing up Aloysius was taught to be proud of his magical powers and to look down on non magic users with disdain, including his father who indeed was a non magic user. These feelings that his mother induced in him carried on stirring and brooding inside him as he approached his late teens. He saw the plight of his kind. The seclusion they had endured.

His father had worked hard on building his family small arms business to global fame, spending most of his time away from his dear wife and son. When Aloysius turned 16 his father mysteriously died and his mother was looking forward to gaining the family business for herself. However when the will was read out his father had split his fortune and his business equally between mother and son, forcing them to spilt the business.

The rest of the story you should already know...

Magic. Magi. The arcane arts. Whatever you want to call it, History has been littered with many tales and folklore regarding people gifted with magical prowess. And while many of these tales were just fabrications, some were most certainly true. Throughout history, Mankind has been split into two kinds: Those who possess magical talent, and those who do not.

Back before recorded history, when Mankind started to form the first primitive settlements and villages, the magi and non-magi got along to start with. Both relied on one another to survive. But as the non-magi began to grow in number, and the number of magi remained stagnant. The non-magi started to distrust the magi; the exact reason has been lost to time. What happened next was nothing less than attempted genocide. Over the next hundred or so years, the magi population was dwindled down and down, until eventually only a few scarce remnants remained, all hiding in secret.

In order to protect themselves the magi formed The Guild: a sort of proto-government designed to isolate themselves from the non-magi and ensure enforcement of the Magical Anonymity Mandate. The pact was designed to restrict the use of magic around non-magi, as well as do everything in their power to prevent the non-magi from discovering the existence of magic. The plan worked perfectly, and as time went on people began to forget about what magic was, until it became the first folk story in recorded history.

All was not peaceful in the world of the magi however. While the majority of the magical society was perfectly content with the self imposed isolation, a certain group of people had started to take a different, more radical view. The isolation had made them resent the non-magi. That resentment then turned into hatred and sparked the belief that the magi were far more superior to the non-magi. Eventually these misguided souls banded together and formed Corpus: The society to guide magi to dominate the world. The Guild knew that they couldn’t allow this kind of extremism to gain traction. So, the only option left to The Guild was to root these heretics out. The result was actually full scale war.

The war dragged on for almost a decade. Many lives were lost and friendships destroyed. It almost seemed as if the whole of Magi kind was on the brink of extinction. However, The Guild were able to pull themselves together under the leadership of Sawa Laur De Silva. With Corpus no longer terrorising the fragile state of Magi kind, The Guild grew stronger, eventually crowning Sawa as the first leader of The Guild. Over the next thousand years The Guild continued to enforce the Magical Anonymity Mandate.

As time moved on, four powerful lineages began to rise: De Silva, Leighton, Rushika, Louis. These four powerful families vied for power, each one rising to the top position, only to be toppled centuries later. By the 19th century however, the De Silva family had managed to solidify their position and since then, have single-handedly ran the Guild, creating in the process the single most powerful bloodline ever known. Our story takes place in 2016, where trouble has been brewing for the past few years and the world of the magi is in trouble once again.

Scholars have tried over and over again throughout the ages to pinpoint the exact reason or trait that makes the magi the way they are. There were investigations into many theory: were magi born under a certain star? (always a popular one), was it their physicality?, maybe it was because of some water they drank?

Regardless of whatever theory you want to believe the reasons and origins of magic have been lost. The only unifying symbol of Magi is the tattoo-like birthmark that they are each born with. The word birthmark is kind of a con however as a baby isn't born with this birthmark, it develops. Every birthmark starts as a small star shaped freckle which appears at birth. As they grow up and become stronger, the tattoo starts to form growing, expanding and becoming clearer, until their sixteenth birthday where it will be fully formed.

As for the types of magic that is another difficult subject. There have been many attempts to try and classify the fields of magic over history. Below is the most recent and widely accepted attempt:

Elemental: Your classical wind, fire, water etc magic. One of the most common fields and also the easiest to learn. Don't mistake that for being weak however, a large number of Guild leaders have been elementals. As for the types of elements… Let's just say the debate is still open on that one.

Example Classes: Pyromage, Hydromage, Aerotheurgist, Stormmage

Physical: A most bizarre field of magic. Physical magic is split into melee and ranged types. Melee physical users tend to be able to add extra kinetic energy to their punches, while ranged fighters can throw balls of energy capable of knocking people back. A very useful non lethal form of magic. Of course it can be lethal if the user intends it to be. As they grow, they also tend to be able to create physical shields of varying types to protect people from harm.

Example Classes: Warrior Mage, Kineticist, Shieldmage.

Deception: Remember when you thought someone was watching you, but you turn around to find no one there? Odds are there was someone there and you have fallen prey to deception magic. While not usually lethal in itself, deception magi excel at finding other ways to get people to hurt themselves. Afterall, why bloody up your expensive $1000 dress when you can just get your victim to kill themselves for you?

Example Classes: Shadowmage, Shrieker, Illusionist.

Manipulation: There has been a long debate over the existence of manipulation magic. And to some extent there still is. Manipulation magic is a hybrid of both deception and physical magics and most commonly manifests itself as telekinesis. The argument has always been around whether telekinesis was physical or deception. So it ended up getting its own place. Though more has been added over time to give it a more concrete basis.

Example Classes: Telekinetic, Windbreaker, Atomist.

The Forbidden Magics: Just as it says in the title this class hides all the magics that the world should not know. Most have been lost to time and very few people actually know how to cast anything remotely to do with forbidden arts. They are forbidden for a reason.

Example Classes: Necromancer, Chronomage, Bloodmage. [/sub]

[sub]Today, The Guild has evolved into a global law enforcement group. The Guild is split up into several operational areas: The Americas, Europe, Africa etc and each area has its own leader, HQ and the like. For the most part these branches are autonomous, however one of the operational leaders is known as the Primus Magi and has the say over everything and anything in the magical world. Since the early 19th Century the Primus Magi has always been from the De Silva family. This has in turn created a powerful bloodline and now some people have resorted to changing the leadership title to Demi-God. And in some respects they aren't wrong.

Each of the region leaders are responsible for enforcing the will of the Primus Magi as well as keeping conformity to the Magical Anonymity Mandate. How they do so is generally upto them. Once every year all the leaders meet up at HQ for a big meeting, to talk and discuss issues in the realm of the magi. They also convene whenever it is time to crown a new Primus Magi.

The Guilds current HQ region is The Americas, moved from Europe in 1939 for obvious reasons. Since then it has been based out of New York in a deep underground campus. The current leader is Salem De Silva. Though more on her shortly.

Once upon a time there was a little girl named Salem, daughter of the leader of The Guild. The law of The Guild had a bizarre inheritance rule where females inherited first, mostly because magic sewed to be stronger in females. Because of this, Salem was being groomed to become the Primus Magi after her father retired.

During her time in high school, Salem started to become friends with Aloysius Leighton, the young heir to the Leighton lineage who just so happened to be in the same year as Salem. Over time, these two ended up become something rival/couple. They would train in secret, though that training usually ended up in full scale fighting. Not that either of them minded. But it seemed that with connected power and punch, the pair grew closer together.

At age sixteen Aloysius intended to take The Guild entrance exam and join up. This wasn’t unusual, afterall it was expected that all of the great families heirs would be enlisted into The Guild. It was around this time however that Salem’s father had finally discovered the little romance between Salem and Aloysius. He was rightfully pretty angry at this. In the past, it was common for males to marry females from other families, produce a child and then use that child to take over and switch the lineage. While this had not happened in a long time, Salem’s father didn’t want to take the risk.

At the same time, the peace had to be kept, so killing Aloysius was off the table. Instead it was decided to reject his application to The Guild on ‘Mental Stability’ grounds and forbade Salem to see Aloysius again. Naturally this angered Aloysius mother and Aloysius himself became quite depressed, though it was more heartbreak than depression. Aloysius’s mother on the other hand could see what was going on. Trying to wiggle the Leighton name out of the spotlight, and she was having none of it. She was far too old, and unskilled for that matter, to be able to do something. That didn’t mean that Aloysius couldn’t though.

So, His mother pulled him out of school and began to ‘convince’ him to rise up against the De Silva’s and take power back for the Leighton lineage. From this moment on the Dark Shadow was born with Aloysius as its leader.

For the first couple of years, the Dark Shadow did nothing special. It never outright attacked The Guild and for the most part, both sides left each other alone. Aloysius was busy building the Dark Shadow up, trying to find members who were sympathetic of his cause. Meanwhile back at The Guild Salem was starting to consolidate and create her own power. While it would still be a few good years, if not longer for her father to retire, it was always good to start building your power ready for when ascension came.

There was one issue however: Salem wanted the second in command position, It was kind of a unspoken rule that the heir became second in command when they were of age. The current second; Rebecca Touson, refused to give up her place. She had fought hard to get where she was and she wasn’t about to give it up to some blue haired princess. Salem was very resourceful on the other hand, and she devised a plan that allowed her to take the seat from right under Rebecca’s nose. Speaking to her father, Salem managed to convince him to send Rebecca on a infiltration mission to the Dark Shadow. With Rebecca out of the picture, Salem could take her rightful place and all was good.

Except it wasn’t. Rebecca found out that it was Salem who had told her father to send her on this mission; to infiltrate the Dark Shadow, seduce Aloysius and get him to give up, or kill him, whichever was easier. Rebecca did her job, she managed to infiltrate, work her way up to second in command and then seduce Aloysius. That was where Rebecca put her own plan in motion. She convinced Aloysius to attack The Guild and kill Salem and her father. Her plan worked, and a week later Aloysius and the Dark Shadow launched an attack on The Guild Headquarters.

The attack was a mixed blessing. Aloysius was able to defeat Salem’s father but, Salem arrived and was on the warpath, and it looked like she was about to kill Aloysius during the retreat. Salem had managed to find out through some spies in the Dark Shadow that Rebecca was the one behind the attack plan. So during the chaos of Aloysius’s retreat order, Salem aimed her powers at Rebecca and not Aloysius, murdering her on the spot. From Aloysius’s point of view, it looked like the woman he loved died to save him.

This upset at the loss of another person he loved (Salem from her father and Rebecca from murder) caused Aloysius to deep underground and grieve. He believed that he was a cursed man and that he deserved nobody. Meanwhile, Salem had been confirmed into power and had started Operation: Retribution, an all out assault on every Dark Shadow hideout they could find. This eventually led to the Salem Witch Trials (More Here) and ultimately the destruction of the Dark Shadow. At the age of twenty two Salem had become the most successful Guild Leader in modern history, being both the youngest leader ever as well as crushing a major insurrection.

It has been several years since the fall of the Dark Shadow. Aloysius resurfaced just over a year ago and has been quietly trying to rebuild his organisation. Salem on the other hand is closely keeping an eye on the situation while trying to keep the peace within the Guild and with the Magi. Some say a second war is brewing but no one can be certain.

This is where you come in. Who will you be and where will you allegiances lie?

Hopefully you have made it this far, and if you have, great! Thank you. I hope you are interested in this RP. This universe has been a labour of love that i have been working on for the past 8 years on and off. Several times I have tried to use this concept and never truly worked out, something was always wrong. However this version (and the one previous) is the best iteration yet, so i encourage to come join in.

But first some housekeeping:
IC Rules
  • RP 101: No Godmodding. Simples. Shouldn’t have to repeat that one again.
  • Feel free to jump in and out with Posts. However please don’t start posting an entire pages worth of posts one after the other. If you are going to be having a long, quick flowing convo, Take it a Collab.
  • Ontop of this, please try to allow everyone else to post before you post again. This isn’t a strict rule so much as a guideline.
Post length is minimum two paragraphs. Again, not a strict rule so don’t worry about it. If you are getting stuck you can always come and ask for help. I don’t bite. ( Ask @HaleyTheRandom & @SouffleGirl123 )
  • Post frequency is currently set at two weeks. We all have lives. If we speed up we speed up, but preferably I don’t wanna slow down any more than that.
  • There will be battles. There will be violence. People will die. If death comes for your character, take it in your stride. Death scenes can be one of those defining moments in the RP that takes a 'A' RP to a 'AAA' RP. You are more than welcome to make another character and jump right in again.

OOC Rules
  • Don’t be a dick. That’s it really. Keep drama at the door and all will be good. I won’t be held accountable to what happens to people who break this rule.
  • In the event of me sleeping, or just not being around, @HaleyTheRandom & @SouffleGirl123 are in charge, whichever one of them gets to you first.
