My Roleplay, Noble Arms: The ASEAN War, will reach its 4th year in June or July. It's been a long journey.

Despite its massive flaws, my RP, Noble Arms: The ASEAN War, is still one of the longest ongoing RPs in RPGuild - It turns 4 years old in July and the current thread itself is more than a year old.

Formal Application - The Sultanate of Egypt:

From Sick Man to Savior - An 1847 Nation Roleplay

Muhammad Ali establishing a Modern Navy

The Discord Server

The IC Thread (TBA)

In 1840, history diverged when the British offered Muhammad Ali of Egypt, the great modernizer of his country, independence and continued rule of the territories he had conquered in his rebellion against the Ottoman Empire in exchange for one major concession: The construction of an earlier Suez Canal. As the European Navies' guns were staring down his metaphorical throat, the ruler of Egypt agreed, and sweetened the concessions by ceding Crete, which he held at the time, to the nascent Greek state. Thus, the newly-founded Sultanate of Egypt found itself in control of the Levant, Cicilia, and the Hedjaz, becoming the hegemon of the Middle East almost overnight.

Using this opportunity, Muhammad Ali continued his modernizing reforms, establishing a professional bureaucracy, introducing modern technology and agricultural methods, and even sowing the seeds of industry in Egypt, all the while keeping friendly relations with the European powers, relations made friendlier by his abolition of slavery a few years after consolidating his rule over his new lands. Diplomatic ties were also formed with the Muslim states of Sub-Saharan Africa, as well as the Christian nation of Ethiopia, where he formed an unlikely alliance with one of the claimants to its Imperial Throne, Sahle Dingil (The future IRL Tewodoros II), an alliance dedicated to modernizing both their nations in the face of European Expansion.

As for the rest of the world, China is trying to recover from its stunning defeat and humiliation in the First Opium War, with reactionaries and reformists beginning to clash over what reforms their Empire needed, if they needed any at all. Hatred for the foriegners who forced drugs into their country and threaten their way of life simmers among the citizenry and peasants, but above all, the latter despise the ruling Qing Dynasty for trapping them in oppression and poverty. This is the year in which Hong Xiuqan, who would later start the Taiping Rebellion, was refused baptism by Western Missionaries, a foreshadowing of how his revolution will have to rely mostly on domestic support...

In America, the United States is handily beating Mexico in the first and only war between their two nations. Founded on principles of Freedom and Democracy, the United States is brimming with ambitions to turn itself into a world power, although it has to deal with the cancer of slavery which still exists in its southern parts. Will its future be as bright as it was in History, or will the American Dream flounder in this alternate world? For that matter, what of Brazil, Peru, and the other nations of 'Latin America'? Will they be able to rise up and industrialize, attaining unheard-of strength, or will their dreams crash and burn?

And while Ireland suffers under the Great Famine, and Britain sits in 'splendid isolation' to build an empire while not involving itself in Continental Europe, where the forces of Revolution and Reaction stir, with nationalists and liberals formenting rebellion against the Old Guard. Italy and Germany call out for Unification, with would-be revolutionaries in the former prepared to confront the Papacy itself, while in the latter, plans are made to influence Prussia, the hegemon of North Germany, to unite the other German-speaking peoples by force. In Hungary, intellectuals plan to agitate for the self-determination of their people and equality with the Austrian crown, while France's last King, Louis-Philippe of Orleans, is losing popularity to the point where his downfall seems inevitable.

In the Real World, these will become the unsuccssful rebellions of 1848, but who knows what the seeds of discontent will flower into in this world? Or will the forces of reaction succeed instead?

Rules are below:

1.) Do not be an asshole.
2.) The Point of Divergence is 1840 (the present date of the RP is 1847). Before that, your nation's history must be as IRL.
3.) Do not make your nation overpowered.
4.) Do not ignore Logistics or Economics.
5.) By the same token, only a few nations can match the British Empire's economy.
6.) Do not make your nations perfect.
7.) Technological Development must be plausible - I do not want people developing Dreadnoughts in the 1840s. That said, this is an era of advancements in Science and Technology, so don't overly gimp yourselves either.
8.) All nations must have existed in the 1840 - 1847 period. This includes my own, Egypt.

Innocence Lost: Gleaming Horizons

I. Intro

The Ascendancy of Man promised us, the masses, the spoils of Empire - Wealth, Power, and 'Living Space'. In exchange for supporting their war against the 'Alien Meneace', they said every Human would live like the President-for-Life's cronies, with mansions, space yachts, and private gardens the size of Greece. If we signed up for the flag and gave our all, our days of worrying about rising prices, lower paychecks, and being bossed around by some random corporate official would be over and it will be our turn to boss 'Xenos' around.

Enough of us believed. Enough of us fought. And a few of us even committed ugly crimes in the name of a better life.

Then we lost the war. The Aliens were just too many, too stubborn, and eventually matched our weapons and tactics. The final battle was at Proxima Centauri, four Light Years away from Earth itself, which spooked the Ascendancy into suing for peace. If not for the Aliens deciding not to strike the dagger home, they'd be bossing us around by now, not the President-for-Life's cronies, which after getting their asses beat, blamed us, the people who had fought for them, for it.

Obviously, we were not having any of that. In the months after the peace, many of us decided to rebel, some under a new organization called Moonstrike, others on our own. And some others just wanted to make enough cash to survive the new taxes and tolls and 'mandatory service' which the President-for-Life has imposed all throughout Human Space. So a few of us formed a group called RealAscendancyStockBets to squeeze those fat cats out of every cent they had out of the comfort of our homes.

In hindsight, this was a bad idea as the Ascendancy's spooks had very good decryption apps. After we ruined an entire set of hedge funds, the resulting crackdown resulted in almost every member - Hundreds of thousands of us - being dragged from our homes and into one of their newest Prison Ships, Devil's Island.

There, we were offered a bargain - The Ascendancy has created a new 'Wormhole Gate' to a pristine sector of space, filled with new planets to settle... And they needed colonists. So in exchange for a reduction in our sentences, we are to do the hard work of taming new worlds for them. Oh, and we can bring our families too.

And so here we are, pawns in their game yet looking forward to a new life anyway...
I might join.

Edit: Actually, I might not be able to, sorry.

Natasha Zhang

Dangit, she made a bad impression, and now the Captain didn't know how to respond due to her new awareness as to how her passive-aggression had been, well, passive-aggression. At the sight of the Small Mech making its way towards the cafeteria, Natasha's eyes bulged a little, but she tried to cover up her surprise and said, "Is that Mech sapient or something, or just very well-programed? Said Mech also reminded me that we should be making our way to the cafeteria so that we can give Lord Doruva of House Aoshen his 'all you can eat'..."

Nevertheless, she paused so that the ambassador whom she had passively-aggressively insulted can speak for herself - Natasha was interested in how she could assert herself while remaining polite. Not as interested as she was in the Small Mech, which she could have sworn was chuckling, but she can have Laurey look into it once they all meet and she gets herself used to MREs again. Either way, once the ambassador said her piece, Natasha Zhang led the way to the cafeteria, where another unknown alien from that 'Immortal' species and her baby were already eating.

Waving hi to this 'Immortal', Natasha said, "Greetings, I'm the Captain of the Ship, Natasha Zhang. What might your name be, and I presume you're here to join our fight against the Ascendancy?"

Ashton and Flame

Well... That went as well as expected, which was not very well at all. Flame and Ashton were realistic enough (okay, that was more Flame) to know that 'removing the band-aid' was necessary, but that didn't mean they had to like it though it had to be done. Or did it? The two had been so sure of their intelligence that they didn't actually think their actions through, and now they were suffering the consequences. So after lingering a few seconds longer to hear what their diplomat had to say, they went to the cafeteria where they got themselves used to MREs again.

Kherol had no problem eating these, Ashton thought. Neither should I.

I and Ashton might have been too arrogant and rash, Flame said. Scratch that, we were. No thinking about consequences, believing that our talents alone were enough. He took a bite out of an MRE. Somehow, failing makes MREs taste even blander...

He then looked at Natasha, then at Laurey, Avelyn, and perhaps Joey if he was there, and said, "We should begin pursuit of the pirates who took our - I mean Moonstrike's - cash as soon as possible. Who knows what they can do with it..."

Adam Kenneth Yearling - Miyama Town.

If A.K. Yearling could say, sincerely, that he was mindful of his own safety, he would. But he could not - Esfandiyar's concerns were real, and A.K. was on the verge of burdening himself with every innocent life which could be potentially lost. But at the same time, he knew enough stories to know that war... War was hell and he had thrown himself into it, initially to prove himself to his family, but now because the story demanded a hero, even a martyr. And right now, as he continued looking for Elexis or some other Master, he had no regrets -

Then he saw the flare from one of Shinto Town's lesser parks, and decided that compassion did not preclude practicality and vigilance. So he said to Esfandiyar, telepathically, Change of plans. We go to where someone is picking a fight, observe what fight is occuring, and make sure no civilians get caught in the crossfire in this night - That last part is my small-w wish. I'll pull out my Invisibility Cloak for protection.

The young man, barely out of boyhood, then pulled out the Cloak and his Book and covered himself with the former, and began using Wind Magecraft with his basic spells in order to float towards Shinto Town, gesturing for Esfandiyar to folllow him in Spirit Form. As he flew towards his destination, his Cloak's properties allowing him to see inside and through it as though it were transparent, the Magus wrote the next few lines of his own story.

As the first blows of the Holy Grail War began, the burden of commitment that the author had taken upon himself, a burden born from mixed compassion, duty, pride and self-righteousness, felt as light as air. Why was this? Had the author already given up on life as well as victory? Had he decided that joining the narrative of the world, the narrative he believed was his path to The Root, required his sacrifice? Nevertheless, the young man hoped against hope that Fate would be benevolent, and open an opportunity for him to achieve his goals, a small but existent chance to avert what he was fast believing was his doom.

For part of him clung on to life, or at least the idea of life, even though he had given up on truly achieving his goals, given up on getting the acknowledgement he wanted...
